Heifer Station hosted the scaled-down presentation night with a small number of attendees, while more than 1000-people also tuned in to a livestream of the COVID-safe event.

“The NSW Tourism Awards are a celebration of the outstanding resilience and innovative spirit demonstrated by our magnificent industry over the past two years,” NSW Tourism Industry Council Executive Manager, Greg Binskin said.

“It’s been an extremely-challenging period for the NSW visitor economy and, after a break in 2020, the return of the NSW Tourism Awards demonstrates the renewed energy of the visitor economy and celebrates the people, places, and the vibrant culture of our feel-

good State”.

After two tough years, the team at Heifer were elated to claim Gold in the highly-competitive Tourism, Wineries, and Distilleries category.

Owner Michelle Stivens took to social media to thank all their customers for their support through the “darkest days of the pandemic”.

Byng Street Boutique Hotel owners, Thomas and Kristen Nock were also thrilled with their win in the 4-4.5 Star Accommodation category — an amazing achievement given that the hotel opened just months prior to the outbreak of the pandemic.

Affordable housing levy innovative way to improve access — Mallard Affordable housing options for Orange’s overheated rental and sales sector is one innovative area that the new Orange City Council should invest in, new councillor David Mallard believes.

“I think there’s a number of things we can do; better housing affordability, people being priced-out of the market,” he said.

With Orange sharing the growing pains of many regional centres as COVID-19 hit city dwellers escape the rat race in increasing numbers, he said: “we need to be able to cope with more people coming here, and also protect the environment”.

“The State Government has given councils the mechanism to develop an ‘affordable housing contribution scheme’.

Little-used State Government policies allowing councils to either levy land developers to fund affordable housing or require them to set-aside a proportion of their lots for low-income families, is an initiative that the Colour City should lookat, the first-time Greens councillor added.

“People buying and renting need to be provided with affordable housing… we’ve got considerable inequality in earnings, in the community, in sectors like hospitality.”

Despite suggestions that macroeconomic reforms of this kind are State

“Council is currently developing their local housing strategy, so we should be looking at implementing this as part of it,” Cr Mallard said.

“I think we’ve got to have change; people are moving here in increasing numbers and we have to have both the right vision and to be able to protect the environment as well,” he said.

His election as head and sole elected councillor on the Greens Party ticket continues almost two-decades of representation for the party on Orange Council.

“We received about 9.2 per cent of the vote, and we were very happy with the result. We had a diverse group running and we improved our vote from 2017,” Cr Mallard said.

“I’m just proud that we’ve been able to continue the representation of Greens councillors at Orange for the last 17 years.

“It’s very important for the community,

it means the community has a representative there with the Greens’ values… not only environmental sensitivities, but social justice and grassroots democratic participation,” Cr Mallard added.

Water supply, currently an issue seemingly in abeyance after two good years with overflowing dams and green pastures, is likely to again become a limiting factor on growth, he believes.

“We’ve been very innovative on how we manage our water supply, now we need to be better at how we manage demand,” he said.

With a new-look Council, new mayor, and deputy mayor, and plenty of fresh faces, he says that this current Chamber has a real chance to make a positive impact on the civic life of the “Little Apple” (as Orange was once described in a short-lived promotional campaign).

“I think there’s a great opportunity here; a diverse Council and a fresh way of looking at things,” Cr Mallard enthused.

The OCTEC-owned disability enterprise will officially open their new “Marang

Indigenous Edible Garden” on Saturday, February 26, with Orange City Life recently getting a sneak-peek at the innovative enterprise.

Featuring a range of fruits, edible greens, and herbs, much of what is growing in the garden is native to this area and includes plants used for traditional medicinal purposes as well as their nutritional value.

“We wanted to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which the farm exists and operates, and the garden was a great way to do that,” Stephen said.

While allowing you to come and “pick-your-own” native produce is some time away, Stephen said the real value of the garden is in educating visitors about these plants and how they have been used.

“And then, maybe, go away and plant some in their own backyards,” he added.

The Marang Indigenous Edible Garden was created in consultation with Gerald Power, founder of Indigenous Cultural Adventures and recently-elected Deputy Mayor of Orange and who is also a passionate exponent of First Nations food.

Walk into your local supermarket, he says, and you will be lucky to find any native food other than the macadamia nut. But by educating people and showcasing First Nations food in gardens like this, he hopes that will change.

“What we see here is actually the First Nations food of Australia. So people can actually come here and try this — and it’s something that they would have walked over, seen it, but never knew was edible — and how we've used it for 50,000 years!” Gerald said.

“They can come and pick the varieties around the farm, but then come and get educated in relation

to this and probably find a plant that's in their own garden and start utilising it.”

Not only is so much of our native produce good for you, but it’s delicious, he said.

“This bush mint is really high in Vitamin C... it has a spearmint taste with a peppermint at the back of it.

Dry that one up with the curry myrtle and make it like a pepper. With a bit of salt, you put it over a scotch fillet, T-bone, or a nice bit of rump, and it'll take it to the next level!” he enthused.
