On-air and online — Maree keeps local seniors in the know Maree Curtis is bringing senior citizens into the world of podcasting, with her radio show connecting Central West residents with an inside look into the region’s smorgasbord of senior services.

The 88-year-old Bathurst local, who designed, developed, and now runs ‘Senior Citizens’ Updates’, began creating the informative program before the COVID-19 pandemic, officially launching it in August 2021 after completing a Certificate III in Screen Media.

“I found that a lot of people, including myself, don’t always know the services are available to seniors, many of which are free. We also don’t know how to access them,” she said.

Maree Curtis is on a mission to keep seniors up-to-date on services to make their lives easier.

“I thought, ‘if I had a radio program, which told people what the services are and how to access them’ (with interviews with appropriate people from each service), then we would all learn what’s available, how to access it, and how to get in contact.”

Maree’s program explores services available exclusively to Central West residents, as well as more broadly for NSW residents and Australia-wide. They include ‘community pantries’ across the Central West, a driving service that gets residents ready for upcoming driving tests, and community transport services, which will take residents to anything from local appointments, to surrounding Central West towns, to trips to Sydney for

medical assistance, or an international flight.

Another service she has highlighted is a local chemist where staff will bring a prescription to the car at a designated parking spot after receiving an e-script.

“I believe learning is forever, and that’s why I undertook the studies in media,” Maree said.

“I learnt interviewing skills so I could do this program.”

Seniors Citizens’ Updates airs every Friday at 10.45am on 2MCE Orange 94.7 FM and Bathurst 92.3 FM. The program is available for streaming and download across Australia on 2mce.org. It will also be made available through Orange City Council and Bathurst City Council websites.

HISTORYTALKING

I have been collecting and writing about people's memories of the past for over forty years and am a firm believer in the idea that “ behind every face is a story.”

We were talking about ploughing and growing crops when two of our group began to speak of the intricacies of haystack making, a dying art, but equal in the paddock to any handcra produced in the home.

In their descriptive telling, they became so enthusiastic that they jumped up the be er to demonstrate the exact method of perfecting a stack.

No ma er how o en someone protests that their life has been unbelievably dull, I have always found that, with some careful probing, an interesting story will emerge.

I have lived in this beautiful city only since 2008, but my childhood was filled with memories of Orange. Not because my home was here, nor that I even visited, but because of the stories my father and his siblings would tell around the dining room table to the wide-eyed fascination of their youthful audience.

They were all born and grew up here in the early part of the 20th Century.

These were the days before sewerage, electric light and air-conditioning, and their tales of catching the horse to harness to the sulky or spring cart to take the family on an excursion were enthralling.

The story of the unfortunate horse struggling to drag the family of seven in a spring cart up the slopes of Mt Canobolas brought gasps of horror from the listeners until we heard later that the children had all climbed out and taken the horse’s place in the sha s.

I suspect that these stories had gained some dramatic detail over the years!

I also think it was likely that those reminiscences encouraged my interest in oral history, and it has led me to the conclusion that: “to find out what happened in the past is to study history, but to know

how people felt about those events adds colour, vibrancy and understanding.”

Over the years I have lived in various towns in the central and far west of NSW, and it was in those towns that I began to talk to people who had actually “been there”. They were the descendants of the first pioneers and their tales of hardship and survival were fascinating.

I found that talking to people in groups was even more successful in encouraging memories.

With much use of hands and feet, the whole thing almost became a ballet and I found myself wishing I had a camera with me to record the spectacle.

Others told me amazing stories of hardship and courage which came out of the Great Depression;of bushfires and floods; and of the drover whose story, inspired by Banjo Pa erson, could have come from the writings of the great man himself.

Then we had talks about changing a itudes: to women, parenting, education and finding our own identity as Australians.

Memories of the days before water was connected to the town and of “wet weather gardens” which were kept alive only in good seasons with the help of washing and bathwater.

Of course, oral history can be coloured by emotion or affected by memory and perceptions which may be open to debate, and every effort should be made to validate historical events mentioned in discussions.

They remembered “swept gardens” where, instead of lawns, the dirt was swept clean away until it became as hard as a rock and as “bare as a tabletop.”

At the same time, the warmth and vitality that peoples memories can add to dry historical facts has enormous value.

One of the most interesting of the group talks I’ve had was with some men who had worked the land all their lives, mostly carrying on in their father’s — and quite o en their grandfather’s — footsteps.

The Orange Oral History group has been in recess during the Covid outbreak, but we hope soon to continue with our valuable work.

Almost instinctively they knew how to respond to the needs of their land, to climatic conditions and how to make the best of what Nature delivered.

It is essential that these memories are given the importance they deserve.
