Orange’s NAIDOC Week celebrations get underway from tomorrow, and there is a whole range of different events and activities planned. The street march and official opening will be held on Monday morning and all the community are being invited to take part. You’ll find a full program of all the NAIDOC Week activities on page 13.

This week I had the opportunity to chat with Gerry Gotch and Nigel Butriss, who are behind a local rally team who’ve created a replica of a piece of Australian motor racing history: the world championship-winning Fiat 131 Abart raced with success in Australia by rally legend and three-time Australian Rally Champion Greg Carr. It’s been a whole lot of work, and many ups and downs, but after a good result at their last outing the team are confident of the future ahead. You can read more on pages 8-9.

The NAIDOC Community Awards Night at the Orange Ex-Services’ Club on Saturday 28 October, will conclude the week of celebrations.

Other events throughout the week include a Family Fun Day, Ladies Night Out and a NAIDOC Elders Lunch.

Energy efficiency and electric vehicles in the spotlight for

ORANGE SUSTAINABLE LIVING WEEK,

October 29 – November 5

T

his Sustainable Living Week, the Rotary Club of Orange is looking to highlight practical ways we can all reduce waste and improve our household water and energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint.

Orange Sustainable Living Week 2023 will kick off with its signature event, the Orange Sustainable Living Expo, from 9am to 2pm on Sunday October 29 in the Naylor Pavilion at Orange Showground.

The Expo will feature a range of exhibitors who’ll be providing expert advice, goods and services to support community members striving to live more sustainably, Rotary Club of Orange president Don Martin said.

The Expo is also being held in conjunction with the club’s popular quarterly Community Markets, so you will also find stallholders selling other products including food and produce, plants, gifts, jewellery and more.

“Through the Sustainable Living Expo we want to promote Orange as an environmentally sustainable city by providing all the practical knowledge and skills to help the community work together to reduce our carbon footprint,” Don said.

Electric vehicle (EV) technology will be a feature throughout the week. At the Expo there will be a display of electric vehicles and a Q&A session for community members to chat with EV owners about their experiences.

And on November 5, local EV owners are inviting the community to a “show and ride” day, to experience EVs in person.

Other events planned for Orange Sustainable Living Week include: community garden tours; a sustainable cooking competition for high school students; Ploughmans Creek wetlands walk; inspection of a local off-grid house; and a planting day at the Waratah Wetlands.

Mallard is encouraging residents of Orange and surrounding areas to take part in this year’s event and find out more about how we can improve energy efficiency in the way we live and work.

“Now, more than ever, people all over the world are recognising the need to be more environmentally conscious and reduce our impact on the planet,” Cr Mallard said.

Scores of small, cut-out pink lady silhouettes were installed on the grassed roof of the Orange Regional Museum on Saturday, October 14, as local breast cancer survivors and affected family members came together to boost awareness of the disease.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month event, hosted by the Orange Pinnacle Dragons Abreast dragon-boating club and Orange City Council in conjunction with Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) saw people place the small pink lady cut-outs in memory of those close to them or to reflect on their own personal journeys.

“The reason I held the event on Saturday was, firstly, to raise awareness of breast cancer and how prevalent it is in the

community,” President of the Pinnacle Dragons Abreast Dragon Boating Club, Sharon Cooper said. “ There are still 57 women a day diagnosed with breast cancer and I think the statistics are more than 200 men a year… everyone has a sister or a workmate or an auntie or a mother — everyone knows somebody that has been touched somehow by breast cancer.”

Sharon, herself, was diagnosed with breast cancer 13 years ago, which is how she became connected with Breast Cancer Network Australia.

And it was through them that she discovered dragon boating, a sport that has

developed a large following for survivors of breast cancer.

“Dragon boating for breast cancer survivors in particular has been around for 25 years [in Australia]. It started in Canada and has turned into a worldwide movement,” Sharon said, who is a passionate advocate for the sport.

“There’s a huge amount of research out there that if you exercise during and after treatment, your health outcomes are better,” she said.

“Dragon boating for breast cancer survivors is particularly good because it’s good upperbody exercise, so it really helps with moving the limbs, it helps with recovery after surgery.

The local motorsports team recreating rally history An Orange-based rally team is on the hunt for success in a lovingly recreated piece of Australian motor racing history.

“So the car is a very special car,” says team manager Nigel dream of father and son owners Gerry and Leigh Gotch.

Even down to the paint scheme, he says, which has been carefully recreated from photographs and includes Carr’s sponsors at the time: Harris Farm Markets, Lovell’s Springs and Gazebo Hotels.

“We’ve certainly gone for the full 1980s experience!” says Nigel. “Modern rally cars are all four-wheel-drive and this is a two-wheel-drive and a rear-wheel-drive at that!

“We have a regular H-pattern gearbox like an older car…it’s naturally aspirated. So it has a particular sound, if it’s going for a forest you can hear it echoing through the trees.

“Certainly very much a different driving style. The driver has to be able to use opposite lock, they’ll be full sideways coming through the corners… So certainly, for a spectator, it is much more interesting watching one of these older cars. Not quite as fast, but you can see the driver is working!”

However building a racing car out of a half-centuryold museum exhibit is not without its challenges, especially when it comes to a vehicle like the Fiat, which was notoriously tricky to work with in its day.

“It’s been a whole learning experience for the team to work out how to make the car work well and get the reliability out of it,” admits Nigel.

“Even in the day when Greg Carr was driving it, there was no one in Australia with experience of it, getting the reliability was also an issue for that team.

“The last 12 months have been trying, but we came up with a plan at Christmas time about what we’re going to do this year and we’ve worked through that, we’re now on top of it and we feel confident now to go back out on the rally stage.”

Fortunately for Nigel and the team today, they have been able to learn from some of those past mistakes.

“We’ve been able to reach out and talk to some guys who worked on the original race cars,” he explains.

“There’s a guy in Sydney, Ross Smith who also built the engine for this car and we’ve been able to ask him how did you do this or what did you do? And they’ve been really forthcoming helping us learn how to do it and help us run the car.”

The Team Gotch Fiat really had their first outing of the season at the Bathurst Rally on September 23, with Leigh Gotch in the driver’s seat alongside navigator David Green.

After nearly nine hours of driving the car finished first in class (2WD 1600-2000cc) and 18th outright to an elated team, who are all looking forward to seeing what this car can achieve.

“All the hard work we did… it’s just paid off,” says Nigel. “We came up with a methodical plan, we worked through that and the proof is in the decent result we just had at Bathurst.

“Now we’ve got the Oberon Rally coming up on the 4th of November and we’re really looking forward to that. And from there, we’re going to go down to rally in Victoria and then we’ll stop again, do testing and work out our schedule over Christmas and hopefully be back for a full season next year.”

MEET DISABILITY ACTIVIST AND AUTHOR HANNAH DIVINEY Leading writer, disability and women’s rights advocate, Hannah Diviney will be in Orange on Wednesday, October 25, to talk about her debut book, I’ll Let Myself In. Hannah Diviney began her career at Mamamia at the age of fifteen and since then has become the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Missing Perspectives, is the face of the global campaign for a disabled Disney Princess and is the woman who called out Lizzo for using an ableist slur.

survey of Australians by Finder earlier this year found that more than 4 in 5 (83%) people say they have set financial goals for 2023.

As we get to the later stage of the year, how do you feel you’ve gone in getting yourself closer to achieving your goals?

One of the key goals many people have is starting to invest for their future. And investing is one of the big things people ask me about…

There are many factors which need to be considered when choosing how to invest money. In broad terms, there are only four places you can invest money – cash, fixed interest, property and shares. You can invest your money across all four of them in any combination and how you choose to invest across them will determine how

much risk you’re taking with your money and the potential you have to make money.

Everyone has a different tolerance for risk and different people are willing to go to different lengths to make money. It’s all about passing the ‘Sleep at Night’ test.

That is, however you choose to invest your money, it needs to be in way that you’re comfortable with. If you’re not comfortable with your investments, then you’ll likely panic when things change.

Many people I work with come to see me with preconceived ideas about what investments they think are best. Therefore, a big part of helping people find the right way for them to invest their money is in educating them about what the different investment options are and the pros and cons of each. After all, we don’t know what we don’t know!

Often this is quite enlightening for people

as their existing ideas are often based on not having all the information. The reality is that most of us pick up our money habits and our thoughts on investing from our parents and those closest to us. And most of our parents didn’t have much of an idea about these things because neither did their parents. It’s a fact that financial literacy is poor, but as we are all living longer and longer, it’s never been more important.

That’s why I invest the time with my clients to open their eyes and empower them with information when it comes to investing.

At the end of the day, the ultimate investment mistake is not investing. The trick is to get the right mix of investments.

Memories by Ned

Some yarns from the back blocks

S

itting in front of an open fire on a cold winter’s night, Mum knitting, Dad reading his paper and me with my nose in a Buck Rogers comic, there came a knock at the door.

It was a couple of Dad’s mates. A challenge had been extended to our football team by a team from the headwaters of the “Bidgee” and our winger had been thrown from his horse and broken his arm and would Dad fill in for him? Dad wasn’t that keen but, as he owed them a favour, this was a good way to clean the slate. He talked it over with Mum and they decided I could go with him. It was a win-win for Mum. She could have some friends over and they could play ladies over afternoon tea; it would be good for me; also it would protect Dad from “falling among friends.”

I carefully packed my overnight bag and off we went… a couple of hours by train and about an hour by bus. When we arrived we were greeted by their welcoming committee: large jolly men with red noses who went out of their way to make us comfortable. After a few beers (lemonade for me) we were given a huge four-course meal, it almost beat my grasshopper appetite. After the meal the welcoming committee took our team into the lounge room. They had a pianist and nothing was a bother. At this stage Dad decided to retire and we went up to our room.

By 1.30am the singing had changed to Sweet Adeline. The volume was good but the melody was a bit rough. About an hour later they all sang Auld Lang Syne and silence descended.

Aussie meal, with lots of black coffee and a “hair of the dog” to assist with the hangover.

The playing field was an open paddock with a slight slope to starboard at one end. Behind the try line was a large patch of blackberry bushes. On the left wing was a big wombat hole, and our forwards would have to contend with rabbit holes and freshly minted cow pats. But at least there were a couple of patches of grass. I met up with some local boys about my age and we got along famously, discussing rabbiting and crayfishing and things important to 10-year-old boys.

When the Bidgee team ran on, there was none of the welcoming committee… only big lanky cockies’ sons from out of the hills – all knobbly knees and sharp elbows!

Finally the game was over and we went

our way home, bruised and battered.

When we arrived home Mum asked him about the game. He explained a few things: after copious amounts of rich good, frothy beer and flatulence, a scrum was not a pleasant place to be. When asked about his black eye and split lip he mumbled something about “a loose arm in the scrum.” His description of the other team was like “trying to tackle a wool pack full of scrap iron.” When asked about the final score he replied: “They won 17-nil and, because of that local stock and station agent they had as referee, we were lucky to get nil.”

Personally, I had a ball, I met new friends, learned some rude rugby songs, and found out how to knobble a football team.

Healthy Eating and Preventing Malnutrition

Benefits of staying active and healthy as you age include increased wellbeing and participation, faster recovery, reduced risk of chronic disease, and prevention of falls and pressure injuries. Here are tips to on how to eat healthy and avoid malnutrition, from Western NSW Local Health District: What is Malnutrition?

Malnutrition occurs when a person does not consume enough energy (calories) or protein for their body’s needs, potentially due to increased nutritional requirements of being unwell or not eating enough.

Maintaining a healthy body weight and muscle mass as we age is important to reduce the risk of having a fall or developing a pressure injury.

If you have been eating poorly, identifying and treating malnutrition early is crucial in avoiding outcomes like muscle wasting, reduced immunity and extended hospital stays.

Who is at risk of malnutrition?

Malnutrition can come in many shapes and sizes, sometimes affecting the most unlikely of people, not just the elderly, and these factors can put you at higher risk. ● Aged 65 years and over ● Cancers ● Chewing/swallowing problems ● Dementia ● Depression ● Hospital admission ● Inability to shop, cook or feed themselves ● Social isolation ● Surgery You can ask a few simple questions of yourself, or a loved one if you are concerned they have recently lost weight, including: ● Have you been eating less than usual? ● Do you have a reduced appetite? ● Have you lost weight without meaning to? ● Are your clothes and jewellery becoming loose? ● Have you had to tighten your belt buckle? ● Have your friends or family recently told you that you look like you’ve lost weight?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you should talk to your doctor or nurse who can refer you to a dietitian who can assess your nutritional status and make tailored recommendations.

If you have lost weight recently without trying to, or are unable to eat enough due to a poor appetite you may be advised to eat a high protein, high-energy diet. This can help you gain weight, build strength and recover faster.

How can I increase my protein and energy intake? ● Aim for six small meals across the day.

Eat every 1-2 hours rather than relying on hunger. ● Have small snacks between meals. Even if you are not hungry, try a few mouthfuls. ● Add a source of protein to every meal (e.g. beef, chicken fish, eggs, cheese, baked beans) ● Eat the protein part of your meal first to ensure the most important part is eaten before you are full. ● Add a dessert to your main meal. Sweets provide a lot of energy for their small size. ● Include high-energy/protein drinks throughout the day like milkshakes, smoothies or protein shakes. ● Add extra oil, butter, cream and cheese to your meals.

veryone has had a chance to have their say and the votes are in.

In our democracy we all get to make an individual choice.

I stand by mine and I respect others making and standing by theirs.

I’ve had many people, who voted either way, stop me in the street, at polling booth, or email in to say how glad they are that their local member doesn’t just tow a party line and do what he’s told by the party puppeteers and their machine.

While this referendum has now ended, sadly, the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians still exists in so many ways and closing it remains one of the great challenges our country faces.

I hope that Australians everywhere can come together and find ways to pick up the torch of reconciliation and carry it forward.

PINNACLE PLAYERS PRESENT AGATHA CHRISTIE’S WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION Orange-based theatre company, Pinnacle Players, are bringing their award-winning production of Agatha Christie’s Witness For The Prosecution back to the historic Carcoar Court House this November.

You know nothing Community service announcement: I’m an idiot with no general knowledge, or in fact any niche knowledge that is relevant in 2023. This has been pointed out to me recently by my children, who are experts in everything, particularly the 14-year-old. And to be fair, there are some glaring gaps in my knowledge. I don’t know who Kourtney Kardashian is, or why she’s fighting with Kim. I’ve never listened to K-POP. And this morning I folded an entire basket of washing without using a single TikTok hack. If you fold shirts without filming yourself using a piece of cardboard to flip it around as you play K-POP in the background, did it even happen?

No, according to my mini experts on life. However, their expertise on useless things has emboldened them in ridiculous ways. Miss Nine recently got her pen licence. This was a beautiful, proud moment for her and we presented her with the ceremonial expensive pens from Officeworks.

You know the ones: Gel ink, 0.7mm tip, fully erasable, in every colour of the rainbow, and wide enough to label with a specifically bought “pencil name label” that’s part of the $80 labelling pack I bought in January out of desperation. (She has still lost a record five fully labelled jumpers this year!).

But I digress. Miss Nine expressed warm gratitude (to herself, for earning her pen licence) before asking where the pink pen was. I unfortunately had to point out that pink isn’t a colour in the rainbow, and is therefore excluded from the rainbow pen package. Outraged, Miss Nine called Grandma to report my bad parenting. Grandma agreed with her 100 per cent and promised to bring an array of pink gel pens next visit.

Miss 14 decided to take a small break from scrolling to watch a movie with me (either due to crippling thumb cramps or the likelihood of good snacks… Both, most likely, but I’ll take that. She is immediately taken with all of the “modern” musicians who’ve somehow contributed to the score of this 90s film and then proceeds to tell me which of her favourite TikTok music is being used.

“This band is called Aerosmith,” she informs me, without so much as a hint of self-awareness. “Never heard of him!” I reply, before adding that “I don’t want to miss a thing.”

“Stop talking and watch the movie then,” she says with a scowl.

At the end of the movie, I tempt fate and ask her what she thinks. She tells me it’s cool to see the old guy from the “I see dead people meme” in an actual movie.

My last glaringly obvious lack of knowledge moment is revealed during homework. Miss 14 is learning about the industrial revolution. Unfortunately, her father, who is a history buff, is busy working. So it’s up to me, Google and my Les Miserables soundtrack to help.

It turns out that the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution are not only different things, but Les Mis was actually about the June Revolution. And Jean Valjean wasn’t a real person. So instead, I encouraged her to find a TikTok explaining the industrial revolution and congratulate myself on communicating with her on her level.

I then proceed to help Miss Nine colour in her finished homework with rainbow pens and decide that today was a win, that I’m personally looking forward to the new pink pens from Grandma, Hugh Jackman can serenade us on movie night, and hubby remains in charge of history-based homework.

The tinned seafood trend One of the biggest worldwide food trends in 2023 comes from the North of Spain… incredible tinned fish and seafood from the Cantabrian Sea. I’m not talking about the average cans you currently find in Aussie supermarkets. I’m talking about the traditional Spanish conservas which are top quality foods preserved in cans or jars, including octopus, squid, mussels, razor clams, cockles, anchovies, sardines, and more.

Canned food is a very old preservation technique where they use delicious olive oils, vinegars, spices and smoked pimentón.

If you haven’t tried them yet, let me tell you that they are not only delicious, they are really easy to use, too. One of the best additions for travelling, in my opinion, because they don’t need to be refrigerated. I personally love having these super-healthy items in my pantry, because they are a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and vitamin B12.

They haven’t always been so trendy here in Australia.

Fifteen years ago, for example, the word ‘anchovy’ created a polarising debate that made many chefs hesitate every time we wanted to use them in restaurants. If I told you the amount of times that the word ‘anchovy’ has given me trouble in menus in Australia due to their old-fashioned bad reputation and clichés around them, you wouldn’t believe me.

But I knew I had to keep advocating and fighting for them, believing that there was nothing like them in this country.

I’ve been very lucky to witness during the last decade other people that thought like me: like Melbourne’s chef Frank Camorra with his famous Cantabrian anchovy with tomato sorbet; the food and travel journalist Ben Groundwater defending this product publicly when no one else did; and of course all the Spanish importers that risked a lot in order to keep bringing all these absolutely five-star quality canned goods Down Under.

What a journey, from a rare Spanish product that no one wanted to buy, to trendy!

But why am I elevating fish and seafood coming in a tin like it is as good as the traditional fresh stuff?? Well, because we live 200 (plus) km from the closest piece of ocean. And that makes me think: how many frozen processes do you think that our ‘fresh’ fish and seafood have been through since they caught it until it ends on our tables? I’m going to put that thought over the table for you. But meanwhile I’ll ask you to do your numbers.

You’ll see clearly what the most economical way of offering omega-3, zinc, and vitamin B12 to your family is!

If this write-up convinces you, and makes you want to give Spanish conservas a try, please start by adding them in salads, sandwiches, for snacks, in canapes for your celebrations, etc. You can even make delicious dips with them. (That’s a spring tip for free from me!)

METHOD: Open the bag of crisps, open the tin of conservas. Use the toothpicks in order to place a piece of fish or seafood on top of a crisp. Enjoy this fish ‘n’ chips, but Spanish style.

Local motorcycle riders took part in a friendly, free social ride on Saturday, October 14 to raise awareness of the many local mental health support services available.

Canowindra Public School students have been busily creating sculptures, paintings and drawings for their 2023 fundraising art exhibition, ‘Look at Me!’

Look at me! an art exhibition by the students of Canowindra Public School

The P&C-organised fundraising event will see students’ artwork on exhibition and up for sale from Friday to Sunday, October 20–22.

“We are raising funds for a cultural and creative experience for all the students which will involve workshops and murals at the school inspired by the students,” P&C President Eleena Markcrow said.

“We are looking forward to seeing everyone at Riverside supporting the youth in our community further their educational goals and enjoying a great day out” concludes Barry.

ORANGE CITY LIFE | OCTOBER 19 — 25, 2023

This last weekend saw the return to Jack Brabham Park of softball, with the season getting underway for all age categories. For us, that means that it’s T-Ball in the morning and C-Grade in the afternoons. I love the Bletchington Softball Club. It has a wonderful, familyfriendly culture that is always welcoming of newcomers. When we first moved to Orange and were looking for a fun sport to become involved in, softball would’ve been the last sport on my list of sports to try. Now however, I cannot wait for each game to roll around. This past weekend was no different. As each season begins though, I forget just how stiff and sore I am as muscles that I haven’t used for a few months suddenly get put through their paces. There is such a wonderful sense of comradery in our team and even though we were utterly demolished in our first game, we had a great time together. There is something special about the sort of community that can be found in a team sport. Perhaps it is the shared purpose, that together we are working for a particular goal. Perhaps it is the sense of shared experience and fun, that together we laugh at our dropped catches, and chaotic moments of play when we forget the rules. Maybe it is the joy of meeting new people and making connections with others that you

wouldn’t normally connect with. There is another place where we find this kind of community and that is in the local church.

The New Testament has a lot to say about the ordinary, unimpressive gatherings of people who meet together and share their lives with one another. Just like my softball team, there is joy, there is chaos, there is fun, there is comradery, and there is a shared purpose. But at the heart of our local church is not a journey to win the trophy (which is probably not going to happen for our team this season). Instead, it is a person. That person is Jesus. He is the one who orders, shapes, comforts and guides the local church in all it does. It is here in the local church that I have found a family. It is here that I have found a true and deep sense of purpose and it is something that I wouldn’t trade for anything. As I think about my own experience with my local church I am incredibly thankful. Maybe you are in a place where you find yourself longing for a community. So, as I run around the diamonds, pull a hamstring in the outfield, and remind myself of my personal lack of fitness every Saturday afternoon this summer, I am reminded of the wonderful community that I have found in my local church. You might be surprised what you may find in your local, unimpressive, ordinary local church.

“Will the Lord reject forever?

Will he never show his favour again?

Has his unfailing love vanished forever?

Has his promise failed for all time?

Has God forgotten to be merciful?

Has he in anger withheld his compassion?”

You might be surprised to find these honest questions cried out in anguish are found in Psalm 77 of The Bible. Perhaps you thought that The Bible was full of inspiring verses that aren’t relevant when life gets hard. Suffering often raises deep spiritual questions: What’s the point? Why is God doing this?

How about your suffering – who do you turn to? Although the verses above are unexpected, they are at least honest. Even an honest cry of confusion is an expression of faith when spoken to God. As Jesus suffered his dying breaths on the cross, he called out using the words of Psalm 22: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Jesus truly understands what it’s like to call out to God in pain. If you are suffering today, why not use the words of Psalm 22 or 77 as a prayer? If it was good enough for Jesus, it might be good for you, too. the knowledge that he is in control and knows our struggles and that he has reserved a place for us in heaven.

That’s the comfort that lasts longer than a book and a cup of tea.

councillors who finally admitted they got Lords Place wrong. Orange has a natural beauty, she doesn’t need painted roads and hideous shade structures, trees do that for nothing. It worries me this was intended as a ‘trial’, surely they weren’t planning on more!

Winners are grinners

It was a big occasion for this Orange Rural School’s rugby league team in August 1960 when they decisively won a competition between Orange and district teams. With teachers J Bowyer and R Hill are J Davis, L Colquohoun, Dick Agland, Graham Milne, T Garlick, R Britten, R Rayner, L Toemoe, B Steen, T Morris, M Pocknall, B Kent, W Connor and A Coyte.

THUMBS UP to Cass and Lara at “Living Space Cafe” on the corner of Byng and McLachlan Streets. A beaut little cafe for coffee and light snacks in a lovely old building. Service is with a smile and one is always made to feel welcome. Another gem in Orange.

THUMBS UP to the staff at the Little Snack Shack in the Orange City Centre for their friendly service and patience with some difficult customers.

THUMBS DOWN to people who walk their pets around and are too lazy to pick up their leavings and put them in their own bin.
