I am writing this shortly after hearing the sad news of the passing of former mayor John Davis. While I am still only a relative newcomer to the Colour City I first met John many years prior to moving to Orange while a journalist at Bourke’s The Western Herald. John was a generous and regular supporter of the Bourke Police and Community Outback Trek, a charity car rally that raised money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and other local charities. On behalf of all of us here at Orange City Life, I’d like to pass on my condolences to John’s family.

I spent a very pleasant Saturday afternoon with the family exploring six amazing local gardens open to the public as part of the Orange Public School fundraiser Orange Open Gardens. Some truly stunning gardens were on display, and the day was well run — a credit to the organisers and volunteers.

The historic Cook Park is turning 150 this November and Orange City Council is preparing to celebrate the milestone with a community picnic on Saturday, November 25. But in the lead-up to the anniversary celebration, they have organised several activities for people to enjoy including an exhibition in the Endeavour Room of the Bastick Cottage on the ‘People Who Shaped Cook Park’. And starting today, Council staff will also be conducting guided tours of the park at 11am each Tuesday and Thursday throughout November.

Conservatorium Director, Donna Riles announces retirement

fter a career in music education spanning four decades, Orange Regional Conservatorium Director, Donna Riles has announced her retirement.

The announcement of Donna’s retirement follows Orange City Council giving the go-ahead to a new $32 million state-of-the-art facility for the ORC, and a period of steady growth and outstanding performance in which Donna played an instrumental role.

Donna has been a passionate advocate for music education in the Western Region for decades.

“My time at the Conservatorium as Head of Keyboard/Schools Liaison and the last eleven years as Director has been remarkably enriching and rewarding,” Donna said.

In 2002, after a long and distinguished career as a music teacher with the Department of Education Donna was awarded the Director General’s Award for Excellent Service to Public Education.

Prior to becoming Director in 2014, she served as Head of Keyboard and Academic Studies for many years.

“Now that we are on the cusp of an exciting period of development, I feel this is the right time.”

Vale John Davis OAM

Tributes flow following death of former mayor and prominent businessman Former Orange City Councillor and our city’s Orange longest-serving mayor John Davis has died.

News of John Davis’ passing broke on Tuesday morning prompting an outpouring of tributes to the man described as a “larger-than-life character” “[John Davis] was a mentor and great friend to me, and a dedicated community member of this city,” wrote Orange Mayor Jason Hamling on his Facebook page.

“A husband, business owner, father, grandfather and brother, and the longestserving Mayor of Orange; JD was also a prominent figure in my life for the past three decades.”

Cr Hamling was first elected to Orange City Council on John Davis’s ticket in 2004.

“He was a larger-than-life character and it’s hard to think of him not being around,” he said. “He was part of the fabric of this city. Local politics can be pretty rough and tumble, but John always put the city first.

He was a big-picture thinker and at the

centre of his decision-making was ‘Will this make the city better and deliver for the community?’ If the answer was yes, he would find a way.”

The Council flags in front of the Civic Centre were flown at half-mast in his honour following the news on Tuesday.

Council CEO David Waddell said Mr Davis had a lasting impact on the Orange community.

“As Mayor, John Davis was able to strike a good balance between listening to the community, but also being thick-skinned enough to tough it out when he faced opposition,” Mr Waddell said.

“Major community infrastructure projects like the Macquarie pipeline or building the Northern Distributor Road were always going to face criticism, but John Davis had the ability to listen to critics but then publicly sell a controversial project to the community.”

“My heartfelt condolences to John’s family, friends and the wider Orange community who grieve John’s passing.”

John Davis served on local councils for more than 30 years. Born and bred in Orange, he was a student at Orange Public School and Orange High School, where he excelled as a footballer. In 1976 Mr Davis married Kay Miskell and settled in Kay’s hometown of Blayney. He was Mayor of Blayney from 1994 to 2004. During this time,

he was also coach and president of the Blayney Bears Rugby League Club.

Following a move to Orange in 2003, he ran for Council in the March 2004 elections.

He was successfully elected Mayor. Mr Davis served two terms as mayor: 2004 to 2008 and 2009 to 2017.

In 2013, he received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to local government and to the community of Orange.

Mr Davis chose not to stand in the September 2017 elections.

Major projects during his terms as Mayor of Orange include the construction of the Macquarie pipeline, the stormwater harvesting scheme, raising the height of the dam wall at Suma Park, the PCYC, the indoor swimming pool at the Aquatic Centre and the Northern Distributor Road.

He was also a strong advocate for the establishment of the Orange Health Service at Bloomfield.

9000 natives and exotic plants up for grabs at popular spring sale Friends of the Orange Botanic Gardens’ Spring plant sale is just around the corner and there is plenty of variety on offer to make your garden bloom.

School leavers, jobseekers can get hands-on at the Orange Careers Expo and Trade Experience 2023 The Orange Careers Expo and Trade Experience is back at the Orange Function Centre this Wednesday, November 8, with more than 60 exhibitors offering a taste of what could be your future career.

“It’s open to school students and the community. A lot of the schools will bring their year nine and year ten students down to have a look,” Expo organiser and Regional Industry Education Partnership Senior Project Officer, Jacquie Smith said.

“There’s a lot to see and do — and it is immersive as well. So a lot of the exhibitors have hands-on things to show exactly what [jobseekers] will do in the workplace, what they do for a job. So it’s not the traditional career expo with little boxes.”

will be represented, Jacquie said, along with a wide range of local industries.

“Hutcheon & Pearce, Almighty Industries, Whittaker Contracting… NSW Dairy — who will have a dairy challenge, Diesel and Blue Doggy Daycare will be doing dog grooming displays, Newcrest Cadia is there, NSW Health… There’s just a good variety of different businesses,” she said.

Universities and registered training organisations like TAFE NSW will have displays and there will also be an onsite jobs board advertising positions vacant, traineeships, and apprenticeships.

The Orange Careers Expo and Trade Experience 2023 will be held on Wednesday, November 9, from 9–2pm at the Orange Function Centre. Admission is free.

The popular annual plant sale is being held on November 11–12, and promises to be a green thumb’s delight, with a huge variety of exotic and native plants up for grabs at very reasonable prices.

“We have heaps of salvias and penstemons — a big selection of perennial plants in particular. Lupins, we have lots of lupins,” Friends of the Botanic Garden member, Chris Mills said.

“We have some brachyscome and the scaly phebalium… casuarinas, there’s a big range of those and quite a good range of wattles this time and of eucalypts which is great.”

by Friends of the Orange Botanic Gardens volunteers and all are sourced from local gardens, the Botanic Gardens as well as nearby reserves including Gaanha-Bula/Mount Canobolas.

“We are starting to get the snow gums off the mountain, including some threatened species,” added Chris.

“There are over 9000 plants available, a bit over 60 per cent natives, so there is a very good range and usually a very good stock of plants. Come early on the first day if you really want a good selection, because they’ll go pretty quickly!

The money raised at the Spring Plant Sale will be used by Friends of the Botanic Gardens to further develop or improve the Botanic Gardens.

The Friends of the Orange Botanic Gardens Plant Sale will take place from 8.30am to 3pm on Saturday, November 11, and 8.30am to 1pm Sunday, November 12, at the Orange Botanic Gardens propagation area.

Kim’s ‘little story about love’ lands her publisher’s new literary prize

M

illthorpe author Kim Kelly’s latest historical novella Ladies’ Rest and Writing Room has won a brand new literary prize from independent publisher Finlay Lloyd.

The Finlay Lloyd 20/40 Prize was created to support writers of shorter-form fiction and non-fiction works of between 20,000 and 40,000 words. Submissions are judged ‘blind’ by a panel, with a focus on creative inventiveness and quality.

For Kim — who is no stranger to the publishing business, having been a writer and book editor for almost 20 years — it was still a shock when she received the phone call telling her she was the inaugural winner of the new literary prize.

“I didn’t believe it! I thought, oh Finlay Lloyd might be a bit too highbrow for me, but I put my manuscript in any way and I won!” Kim said.

“I’d thought my little stories about love don’t really fit with the literary schema, but they loved it.”

Ladies’ Rest and Writing Room is Kim’s 13th published work, but despite commendations and being shortlisted and longlisted many times in the past, this is actually the first to have won.

“I’ve always been the bridesmaid… and always just missing out,” Kim said. “And I’ve always thought the reason why I always miss out is because my stories are full of hope and love and things like that that just don’t quite tick the ‘literary’ box in that respect.

“So, to actually have won something full stop is a big deal for me, but it’s also my

13th book so it’s kind of lucky 13 as well!”

Kim added with a laugh.

Set in Sydney during Christmas 1922, Ladies’ Rest and Writing Room is the story of two young women, Dotty and Clarinda, whose lives become intertwined after they cross paths by chance in the “Ladies’ Rest and Writing Room” in the old Farmer’s Department Store.

“I came across this advertisement in the Sydney Morning Herald, for this Ladies’ Rest and Writing Room in that department store, which is now Myer, and that was the spark for the story,” Kim said.

“It was described as this haven in the middle of the city, decked out in plush pink tones with everything catered for.. so you could write your letters there and gossip and take a break from your busy shopping schedule!”

Set in the wake of the First World War, the two women are both psychologically damaged by grief and loss as a result of the war, Kim said.

“It’s a story that’s very focused on the way women come together and the way that they can recognize where the other is at,” she said.

“Through that recognition of each other’s grief, they become each other’s rescue, in a way, out of the depths of despair.”

Commenting on Ladies’ Rest and Writing Room the judging panel said: “Kelly sweeps the reader into the lives and passions of her two central characters and into the bustling city streets of Sydney in the 1920s. A powerfully moving book that sparkles with vitality.”

A defining quality of Walker’s work over the past 25 years is his unromantic view of the wounded landscape and the stories it holds, an approach which has seen him gain a reputation as one of Australia’s most significant painters.

W

hen I was a small boy growing up in the early 30s Mum would read me bedtime stories by the light of the kerosene lamp. They were all very old original stories handed down from generation to generation.

I would listen, entranced, to the stories of Jack taking the Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum out of the fearsome giant, the three little pigs putting an end to the fearsome wolf, or Billy Goat Gruff dealing severely with the nasty Troll, or the Bremen rooster frightening off the robbers with his “And that will do for you”.

Even Cinderella’s nasty stepmother got her comeuppance. In all the stories, good triumphed over evil and the white hats won

Superstition every time.

Those of us coming from the land of the Leprechaun and the Banshee carry in our psyche remnants of years of superstitions.

While common sense and pragmatism tell us that they are only a figment of our imagination, and are essentially harmless, they are always with us. Such as: do not open an umbrella in the house, do not walk under a ladder, shoes placed on the table presages bad luck. The number 13 has a strong place in superstition: I have been in many hotels and motels that do not have room number 13. Yet seven is a lucky number.

The list goes on. If someone gives you a knife, you must pay them something. If I spill the salt I always throw a pinch over my left shoulder, and when someone sneezes I say, “Bless You”. These things are done instantly without thinking.

My Mum would always cover the silver in a thunderstorm because it was supposed to attract lightning. That one might have worked because the house was never struck by lightning. I wonder how many lottery tickets were bought because a black cat walked across someone’s path?

Talking of stories may I tell you of the old couple Sean and Mary celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary? They decided to take a walk to their old school, holding hands all the way. The school building was not locked, so they entered and wandered around the corridors and classrooms, remembering their happy school days together. On their way back home, an armoured car passed them by and a big black bag fell out, landing at their feet. Mary quickly picked it up and, not knowing what to do, took it home. There on her kitchen table she counted out $500,000. Sean

said, “We have to give it back,” but Mary said, “Finders keepers.” She put the money up in the attic. Two days went by, and the Garda detectives were canvassing the neighbourhood looking for the money and knocked on their door.

“Pardon me,” said the detective, “but did either of you find a bag that fell out of an armoured car a couple of days ago?” Mary said, “No.” Sean said, “She’s lying. She hid it up in the attic.” Mary said, “Don’t believe him, he’s getting senile.” The detectives questioned Sean further: “Tell us the story from the beginning.” Sean began, “Well, when Mary and I were walking home from school yesterday…” The first detective turned to his partner and says, “We’re outta here.”

Cadia’s Senior Leadership Team celebrate 25 years of mining in the Cadia District.

Celebrating 25 years of Mining in the Cadia District Monday 23 October, 2023 marked 25 years since the Cadia Hill Open Pit was officially opened by then-Premier, the Hon Bob Carr MP. During the past 25 years, Cadia has seen many milestones, including the development and mining of Cadia Hill, Ridgeway, Cadia East, and the construction and commissioning of Cadia’s Ore Processing plant, which has expanded significantly during this time.

We have produced more than fourteen and a half million ounces of gold and one and half million tonnes of copper. We have substantially contributed to the Australian economy and our local communities.

We have provided jobs to thousands of Australians and pioneered new technologies, with far-reaching benefits across the mining industry.

We have provided more than 50 scholarships to support local students studying mining-related disciplines. As one of Cadia’s first scholarship recipients, Matthew Taylor started at Cadia as a graduate mining engineer and is now Cadia’s Head of Operations.

We have also seen more than 150 apprentices complete their training, developing the next generation of our workforce.

We’ve also contributed more than $21 million to the local community and helped bring important services such as the Ronald McDonald House and the Orange Orchard Domestic Violence safe haven to Orange.

We were the first panel cave mining operation in Australia.

We have increased our processing rate several times, and are currently working towards an annual rate of 35 million tonnes per annum.

We were the first underground mine to successfully implement a semi-autonomous integrated production level, including support equipment. This focus on removing personnel from potentially hazardous environments is central to the future of safe mining.

We’ve constructed Australia’s first Molybdenum Processing Plant and generated an additional revenue stream for our operations.

We were the first mining operation to remove, replace and upgrade a gearless mill motor and foundation of the size of Cadia’s SAG mill.

There have also been many lessons learned over the past 25 years. Most significantly, has been the tragic loss of three of our workers during this time. We

continue to remember the lives of these workers and the enormous impact their death has had on their families, friends, co-workers and the wider community.

Workplace fatalities are never acceptable, and we have made significant changes to the way we do things to ensure the ongoing safety of our workforce.

We’ve been impacted by two major seismic events and a vent rise failure which each required temporary suspension of mining so that remediation work could take place.

The tailings embankment slump in March 2018 and subsequent dust management issues have been a major challenge.

We’ve also faced two significant drought events, major flooding, rail suspensions and a global pandemic.

We have come a long way in 25 years, we have grown, we have learned and we have developed into one of Australia’s largest gold mines.

And it is certainly not the end of our story.

Coined as the horse race that stops the nation, the Melbourne Cup is an integral part of Australian sporting tradition with the Victorian Racing Club undertaking a tender process every year to appoint a mining company to source the gold for its extraordinary 18-carat gold trophy.

Produced and refined locally near Sydney, each element of the 1.65-kilogram trophy is meticulously handcrafted over 250 hours with every curve, every angle, every dimension within 1/10 of a millimetre of the original design. Each of the three handles represents the owner, trainer, and jockey - and this design has remained the same for an entire century.

SUPPORTING RURAL HEALTH EDUCATION IN THE CENTRAL WEST The Newcrest Mining Sustainability Fund has donated more than $1.4 million to Charles Sturt University to establish a unique health education simulation centre in Orange The Newcrest Rural Health Simulation Centre.

The Centre will enable rural medical students to access worldclass education, equipment and facilities in their own backyard. Currently, the technology is only accessible in metropolitan areas. The recent funding follows previous support from Newcrest of more than $100,000, which went towards the provision of vital simulation equipment.

The Centre forms part of CSU’s Joint Program in Medicine which aims to enhance access to more local doctors and improved medical services for rural, regional and remote communities.

Newcrest’s Interim CEO, Sherry Duhe, and Chief Sustainabilty Officer, Beth White, recently visited CSU to see firsthand how the donation will support students completing their medical degrees in the Central West.

ne year after the horrific storms and floods hit Molong, devastating the much-loved local Bowling Club, members are looking forward to seeing their home turf transformed.

This week, I caught up with Janelle, Margot and Yvonne to present the Club with a $20,000 Stronger Communities Programme grant. The funding will enable the Club to replace the damaged sportsground with a brand-new bowling green.

Molong Bowling Club members have vowed to get the much-loved site back to its best, so it’s fantastic that soon they’ll be able to get cracking on replacing the greens.

The Molong Bowling Club is a wonderful community facility. Twelve months on from the disaster, it’s exciting to see a plan in place to restore the clubhouse and get the greens back in tip top shape!

CENTRAL WEST DISASTER FUNDING A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

I

welcome the announcement that the NSW Government will be contributing a further $50 million towards disaster relief and support in Central Western NSW. This funding is long overdue and badly needed.

Since the storm and flood disaster hit our region almost one year ago, both state and federal governments have failed to deliver proper and adequate disaster support to the residents of our devastated region.

It’s been particularly galling to see hundreds of millions of dollars being funnelled to the Northern Rivers region while our residents got a tiny fraction of that assistance.

The continuing delay to provide disaster support to our area has been a disgrace and is a shameful episode. It was a failure by the previous Coalition state government which had four and a half months to act but didn’t, and an ongoing failure by this state government which has thankfully now been rectified.

While the current NSW Government has been slow off the mark, during a recent visit from the NSW Minister for Emergency Services, the Hon Jihad Dib told me that he would do his best to secure funding - and he has delivered on that commitment.

Now that the NSW State Government has finally stepped up, the Australian Government needs to deliver on the

assurances that they have given me and our residents that they stand ready to assist if the NSW Government activates further joint state/federal support.

I call on the Federal Government to honour its commitment and match this funding on the double.

The Prime Minister has said he will revisit our area, and he can’t turn up empty handed.

The important thing is that this support reaches residents immediately and without delay.

With widespread insurance knockbacks and many residents still living in caravans and pods, time is of the essence.

It would also help our residents if the NSW Government could give them assurances that the rail bridge at Molong and old railway debris at Canowindra, that contributed to the flooding and made the damage much worse, will be fixed and sorted out.

We also haven’t had any word from the NSW Government on support for the Hill End farmers that were hit so hard by the bushfires earlier this year. I would welcome a statement from the NSW Government on what has happened to further support for them and the $75,000 Special Disaster Grants that I have requested. It is disappointing that residents and business owners have had to wait this long for vital funding to get back on their feet.

BLOWING THEIR OWN TRUMPET Orange City bandmaster Harry Sloggett put out a call for more bandsmen in July 1965 and was overwhelmed by the response. Boy s as young as nine and men up to 24 replied, all eager to try out the band’s various brass instruments.

And the enthusiasm didn’t end there as Mr Sloggett was sure the recruits would bring their friends along for the next session.

A fill me up recipe: tuna mornay Today I’m starving and I feel like a big feast at home! However, I’ve had a pretty busy week and I’ve realised that my shopping isn’t up to date. I open the fridge and what I see in front of me confirms my previous statement. “Oh my goodness, that doesn’t look good!” I start my search on what to cook and I find a little bit of butter here, one onion and a little bit of milk. I open the pantry, and I see a bag of penne pasta, some breadcrumbs and a tin of tuna in olive oil. Finally, I check my fruit bowl and there are a couple of lemons.

BINGO!! That is the moment I get really excited because I know what I’m going to cook for my family: the good old TUNA MORNAY!

I was introduced to this dish thanks to my partner. Apparently, it is a classic for uni students here in Australia and many households as well. I absolutely LOVE how everyone has a very personal preference for this recipe: some prefer it stickier, and others a bit runnier! For me, they are all delicious no matter what flavours or ingredients you use. However, there is something really important that makes this simple recipe a masterpiece or a complete disaster: we have to nail the mornay sauce.

Allow me to start by explaining that mornay sauce is the cheesy variation on béchamel sauce, one of the five foundational French ‘mother sauces’. It is

basically a mix of equal parts of butter and flour plus hot milk, and then we can add flavours like freshly grated cheese, lemon zest, tuna, etc. Achieving a thick, velvety white cheese sauce that will be delightful with our penne pasta. It is as easy, or as difficult, as that.

The trick? You need to be confident in making what in French cooking is called a ‘roux’, basically the combo of flour and butter plus the hot milk (which must be added ladle by ladle, until there is no flour flavour and the sauce bubbles and thickens). Would you like a little chef’s advice? This is the key and most important step of the recipe, so please don’t rush it.

Be patient and enjoy the process!! You’ll see how the result will be totally worth it!

“Do you have a gluten-free recipe for tuna mornay?” One of our readers asked me the other day. Yes, I do. Please just make sure that your pasta, flour and breadcrumbs are gluten-free. Then, follow the same steps as today’s recipe.

“Can I add meat, instead of tuna?” Sure, go for it.

“Can it be a vegetarian mornay?”

Absolutely, remove the protein and add your desired vegetable (at the end of the day, remember, it is all about getting the béchamel sauce).

Preheat the oven to 180. Chop the onion.

Cook pasta in a pot following the packet directions. Drain.

In a saucepan add the milk and warm up gently.

In a frying pan add 50g of butter and melt. Add the onion and cook it until translucent. Add then, the 50 g of flour and combine well. Cook for a few minutes.

Start adding milk to the frying pan with a ladle. Little by little. Sir with a wooden spoon until the flour and butter mix absorbs the liquid and you see bubbles. Keep adding milk and repeat the same process until the desired consistency is achieved. Grate some cheese and stir well.

Mix the pasta, the mornay sauce and some lemon zest, and place it on a baking tray. Grate more cheese on top and add the breadcrumbs.

Bake for 20 to 30 minutes until melted and golden on top.

Serve immediately! Enjoy

“I just think his voice is stunning and I was sort of blessed enough to be able to sing with that range and in that tone. So, it was just a natural fit.”

But more than just his incredible voice, Mark believes it is the songs themselves that speak

to the lasting legacy of the ‘Big O’.

“I still am stunned by his ability as a songwriter, which doesn’t get a lot of raps,” he says. “People talk about his voice and the character, but his songwriting ability was extraordinary and he wrote in a very different way than really any other writer of pop songs… they’re almost almost operatic in the way that they’re developed.”

‘The Roy Orbison Story’ is a show that will transport the audience throughout Roy’s life, says Mark, from his initial success in the 1960s to the resurgence of his career in the ‘80s through his legendary ‘Black and White Night’ Concert, his solo album Mystery Girl, and the formation of the Supergroup The Traveling Wilburys.

With backing singers and a seven-piece band behind him, Mark performs 20 classic hits from Orbison’s career including: ‘Only the Lonely’, ‘Running Scared’, ‘Sweet Dream Baby’, ‘Candy Man’, ‘Blue Bayou’, ‘In Dreams’, ‘Anything You Want’, ‘Crying’, ‘Workin’ for the Man’, ‘Pretty Woman’, and many more.

From their first performance together in 2020, flautist Sally Walker and harpist Emily Granger knew there was something special between them. The duo has since performed recitals together at the Sydney Opera House, for Musica Viva Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The debut recording of the pair, Something Like This, is a collection of Walker and Granger’s favourite works for flute and harp culminating from decades of previous collaborations in the genre.

Inspiration for the album came in 2021, when Sally’s father — an ardent music lover — passed away peacefully in his home with Sally playing his favourite tune to him as he took his last breaths.

Just a week before, out of nowhere, he had declared, “I should have been a composer!”

Sally asked, “What kind of music would you have composed?”

“Something like this,” he responded as he listened to some of his favourite music for the last time.

Moved by this story, Sally’s friend and composer, Elena Kats-Chernin, spontaneously

sketched a tune calling it “Something like this”, wondering if it might have been something Sally’s father would have liked to have written, and dedicated it to his memory.

This story and Kats-Chernin’s work form the concept of the album: “Our favourite pieces by our favourite composers.”

There is something for everyone, from Granger’s new arrangements of Bach, Mozart and Satie to Australian works by Greenaway, Sainsbury and Skipworth.

“Never has a musical project felt so close to my heart, weaving together so many people dear to me who generously offered, as Elena Kats-Chernin put it, “a musical hug,” Sally Walker said.

“The music presented on this album celebrates the pairing of flute and harp with well-known works from the core repertoire, as well as explorations with living composers known to us, where we have had an opportunity to work directly with Australian composers on new works, or adapted existing works, to our instrumental combination.”

Light and sound “Bloom” in Robertson Park this Friday, November 3 Renowned artist Kellie O’Dempsey and musician Mick Dick are back in Orange for two Free performances of their light and sound art show “Bloom” in Robertson Park, this Friday, November 3.

Bloom is an art piece that uses projected light, colours, and sound to show how plants change as they grow. The colours will change and move slowly, starting brightly and becoming darker, like plants coming out of the ground.

Reopened Orange Post Office Australia’s first ‘post office for the future’ The historic Orange Post Office has been transformed into Australia Post’s very first “Community Hub @ Post”.

The Summer Street post office reopened its doors on Monday after extensive renovations.

Described as “the post office for the future” Australia Post’s Community Hub @ Post concept reimagines the traditional Post Office and brings together a range of new services and products in a central hub tailored to the local community.

Orange is the pilot site for the concept, which keeps all the existing mail and banking services for customers, but includes new features such as an on-site barista serving coffee, change rooms so you can try on purchases and, if required, arrange to return them while you are still in the post office.

There is a dedicated zone for small businesses to sort, wrap and send orders, including a large packing bench

equipped with scales.

And a space for online retailers and small businesses to showcase and sell their products, with businesses to be rotated seasonally.

Post office customers can now also use digital queuing where you can scan a QR code, select your service and receive a text message when it’s your turn.

“Today is a landmark day for Australia Post as we reimagine the Post Office for the future,” Australia Post Group CEO and Managing Director Paul Graham said at the official launch in Orange on Monday. “.. the way Australians use their local Post Office is very different today than it was 10 years ago. With Community Hub @ Post, we are reinventing how the Post Office operates to support the changing needs of our customers, and readying Australia Post for the future.”

Kellie O’Dempsey will create light projections onto trees in the park, which will be synchronised to the rhythm of Mick Dick’s music Orange City Council Services Policy Committee Chair, Councillor Mel McDonell said that she is pleased to see Robertson Park come alive once more for this event, which is part of Orange City Council’s Future City Public Art project.

“This is yet another fantastic, free event for the Orange community, thanks to funding from both the NSW Government and Orange City Council,” Cr McDonell said.

“I invite everyone to come along and enjoy an incredible, unique experience.

The Future City Public Art program has already seen the installation of murals and sculptures throughout our CBD, now by adding live performances we are offering our community yet more ways to experience our places.”

There will be two after-dark performances of Bloom in Robertson Park this Friday, November 3. The first performance will start at 8pm and finish at 8.45pm. The second performance will start at 9.15pm and run until 10pm.

Audiences are recommended to bring a picnic rug or a chair. This event is free and bookings are not necessary.

ORANGE PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP The Orange Field Days are over for another year.

For the Orange Prostate Cancer Support Group, this was our last information stand at the Field Days for now.

The present group has left it to two members to set up, attend the stand during the Field Days, and dismantle the stand and we are too old and weary.

We are proud of what we have achieved over the last 15 years. When we started, “Prostate Cancer” were words few men had heard of, and when you suggested a blood test, they were gone.

Proudly, this year we had trouble finding men who had not had a test and men would stop and talk about their experiences.

We thank the Field Day organisers and a special thank you to the NSW Farmers for allowing the group to use part of their stand. We also thank Lindy Ostini, our prostate nurse and all the people who have helped over the years.

We may be back, but with a new committee to organise a stand.

New career development program for regional young creatives

Small arts grants opportunity closing soon Considering a career in the arts or creative industries? Young people aged between 16 and 27 years are invited to apply for Horizons, a new state-wide project of mentorships and career development.

The project will run over 18 months and support 75 young people from across regional NSW wanting to pursue a career in the creative industries.

Applications for Arts OutWest’s annual Country Arts Support Program (CASP) close on November 9.

CASP grants of up to $3000 are available for artists and arts workers to create or work on arts activities.

“Arts OutWest is excited to provide this opportunity,” Arts OutWest executive director Kylie Shead said.

“CASP funding is a valuable way to generate exciting and creative new arts activities in our communities,” Arts OutWest executive director Kylie Shead said.

“Whether they have prior experience in the creative industries or are just starting their journey, their dedication and passion is what we’ll be looking for.”

“This funding is about employing artists and making opportunities for people across our region to access a diverse range of arts and culture.”

The creative industries include visual arts, performing arts, film and TV, publishing, advertising and marketing, design, music and sound recording, video games and interactive media, crafts and artisanal production, cultural heritage, software and creative technology, architecture and urban planning.

Funded activities could include arts or heritagebased workshops, classes, performances, installations, exhibitions, tours, screen/filmmaking, writing or composition, development of new work, tours or talks, artist-in-residence programs, recordings or podcasts, experimental arts, and new arts activities attached to festivals or events– as long as they have some element of public outcome.

Participants will be paired with experienced mentors from their chosen field so as to address the needs and interests of each individual. The mentors will support them to connect into a network of peers and build strong state-wide networks early in their careers.

Expressions of interest are now open and close Friday, November 10 2023.

The funding is open to individuals, groups, not-for-profit organisations, arts businesses and councils in the local government areas of Bathurst Region, Blayney, Cabonne, Cowra, Forbes, Lachlan, Lithgow, Mid-Western Region, Oberon, Orange, Parkes and Weddin.

There is a total of $17,000 available in the 2024

round of funding.

“If you’ve got a great activity or project in mind, and the capacity to deliver it, we think you should apply,” Ms Shead said.

“The projects funded in the 2023 round have be inspiring and full of creativity.”

Projects recently funded by CASP in the Central West range from a poetry performance in Yeoval to experimental music in Portland, a porcelain painting workshop in Condobolin, an album launch and an exhibition in Cowra, historic music brought back to life in Orange, Carillion tours in Bathurst, folk music concerts in Millthorpe, indigenous stories in a drone show in Grenfell, and a quirky audio storytelling project at Kandos Museum.

“But it doesn’t work that way. God says your own efforts are never enough. He’s much too holy for us. He certainly isn’t going to be fooled!”

Eric stared off thoughtfully before continuing. “I think it’s like this. God says, ‘You can’t be good enough, however hard you try… but I love you, so I’ve done it for you. I want to forgive you. I WANT to forgive you.’”

“Yup” said Bill. “It’s as if God is looking for an excuse to forgive us, he loves us so much!”

THUMBS UP for Council if they consider putting a “no right turn” sign at the intersection of Kite and McNamara Streets. As I am a very regular customer of a cafe nearby, I have witnessed many near accidents. Mainly because of drivers turning right from McNamara (from the southern and northern side) onto Kite Street and also drivers doing “U-Turns” on that intersection.

Thumbs up and thank you very much OC Life for returning to the previous layout for TV programs. It is so easy to find the programs that I want to watch, and mark them so I don’t miss any. I know I can find all programs on the electronic guide on the TV set, but I can now plan a week’s viewing on paper. I am a very senior citizen!

The staff went to a lot of trouble, decorating and creating a fantastic evening! Most patrons got with the ambience of the evening, dressing up in Halloween attire! Once again, well done!

THUMBS UP to the recently passed John Miller for a life of love and service. Among these, he and his wife Maureen are remembered for faithfully delivering hundreds of copies of Orange City Life to residents in aged care facilities across Orange each week to enjoy.

They did this for years, simply because they cared.

A HUGE HUMBS DOWN to the highway patrol officer who booked me for the pettiest traffic offence on a Saturday afternoon in Orange. Revenue raising at its highest level.

My granddaughter ordered a prawn Caesar salad and the prawns were white, no colour whatsoever and tasted like water. There were two large leaves on her plate and one was rotten underneath. As for any other salad it was virtually nonexistent.

THUMBS UP to all the nurses, kitchen staff, security staff and gardeners at Blayney Hospital for doing such a great job every day!

THUMBS DOWN to the drivers who park in the spaces reserved for disabled parking outside Bernardis in Blayney, and who don’t display a disabled parking sticker.
