As we approach a dry and hot summer, it is nice to see that the city’s water storages are full, but Orange City Council has still issued a statement asking residents to conserve water.

According to a recent report, if the summer and autumn are as dry as predicted, water levels will drop to 90 per cent by February and 80 per cent by the end of June.

This week I had the pleasure of meeting Russell Martin who is helping form a new peer support group for people living with dementia. Russell was diagnosed with a rare, visual variant of Alzheimer’s disease about four years ago, but he hasn’t let it stop him from remaining active and social. He hopes this new group will help others learning to live with dementia feel confident and capable about remaining in the community as long as possible. You can read more on page 5.

Two hours, every four to six weeks is what we’re asking…

Vinnies Van looking for volunteers to meet increasing need

E

very fortnight, on Monday and Wednesday, Vinnies Van volunteers load up their van and head out into the community to distribute a little food to those in need.

But that need is growing, says Vinnies Van Coordinator Keith Dowling, who is hoping they can get the support to send the van out more often.

“The numbers have been growing, and that’s an obvious thing I suppose to say in this economic climate… but we want to be able to get that to a weekly service because the demand is there,” Keith said.

The Vinnies Van relies on its team of volunteers to prepare and distribute

sandwiches, fruit, Milo, tea and coffee at its four stops every run. More volunteers and more financial or material support are needed if the van is to start doing weekly runs.

“It’s volunteers and also the funding,” Keith said. “Vinnies does rely on people’s generous contributions and donations, also financially from those larger organisations and companies, we’ve had some donations from social clubs and things like that.

“But the practical application of business providing foodstuffs, that’s important as well… and if we get this happening for a weekly event, then all the better,” he added.

Volunteers are required for either food preparation, loading the van, or heading out on the evening run, Keith said.

“Two hours, every four to six weeks is what we’re asking,” Keith said. “So if anyone has an interest in doing that, they can communicate with me.”

Volunteering for Vinnies is quite rewarding, he said and there is a good sense of camaraderie between those who take part.

“The nights that I go out on the run, the night patrol is really quite enjoyable,” he said.

“And we have the opportunity to connect with our clients, check in with them, see how they’re going over the last fortnight and we commiserate on their losses or setbacks, but we also celebrate when they have a win and that’s fantastic when we experience it.”

volunteers recently held a free community barbecue outside of Ashcroft’s IGA in Peisley Street as a way to acknowledge and thank the many organisations that sponsor the outreach program.

“We would like to acknowledge them and thank them for their efforts. So Ashcroft’s IGA of course, Bakers Delight bakery provide our bread. And Thornbrook Nursery. The high schools, Catherine McCauley and James Sheehan, and the Rotary Clubs of Orange and also North Orange. They’ve been terrific over the years for the amount that they’ve provided for us,” Keith concluded.

New support group helping people with dementia remain active and social ...everybody coming to dementia as a new diagnosis, they start from scratch again and I think that’s a real shame.”

Orange local Russell Martin was just 61 when he was diagnosed with dementia.

Russell was diagnosed with Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA), a rare, visual variant of Alzheimer’s disease that affects the parts of the brain responsible for spatial perception, complex visual processing, spelling and calculation.

Now Russell is working to build a peer support group to help others like him with the challenges they face so they can remain active and engaged in the community for as long as possible.

“Which basically means that I’m going blind and I’m losing my memory and so it explained everything that was going wrong, what I was having difficulty with,” Russell said.

“I was diagnosed about four years ago with dementia,” Russell said. “And that itself is a challenge: there’s 1084 forms of dementia and they always say, ‘If you’ve met one person with dementia, you’ve met one person with dementia’.”

“I was working with the Department of Agriculture for 30-odd years, I have four degrees and I can’t write a sentence anymore… I finished up being Director of Intellectual Property and Commercialisation with the department and now I have trouble putting my underpants on…

Russell’s first indication that something was wrong was when he started having difficulty with simple tasks like driving or pouring a glass of wine.

At first, he thought it was his eyesight, but after a visit to the optometrist uncovered nothing of concern, he sought further help.

“It’s not the diagnosis you want when you’re just retired, you know. Retirement is about going overseas and doing all this travel and I have a lot of trouble just getting around Orange these days.”

“It took about two years to get diagnosed because they were looking for a lot of other things… and ended up having to get a spinal tap test to actually have a definitive diagnosis,” Russell said.

While connecting with organisations like Dementia Australia greatly helped Russell on his journey, he said it was talking with other

people living with dementia that was the most beneficial. It’s why he has now helped to start a group to connect people living with dementia and experiencing cognitive changes.

“I did a Zoom linkage with Dementia International and had a lot of conversations with those people and I learned more in that environment than I did with any neurologist or anybody else,” Russel said.

“And I wanted to start this group so that we can have a conversation on a regular basis and talk to each other about what’s happening in our dementia life. What’s working? What’s not working? What solutions have people found to be successful?

Because there’s a lot of people out there who are just reinventing the wheel, day after day, and it shouldn’t be that hard… everybody coming to dementia as a new diagnosis, they start from scratch again and I think that’s a real shame.”

For many people living with dementia, staying home where it is familiar and safe can feel like the easiest option, but Russell believes that a support group, connecting people living with dementia with others like

them will enable them to remain active and social.

“This group, I want to try and get awareness of dementia out in the community, but more importantly, people with dementia feeling confident and capable about remaining in the community as long as possible,” Russell said.

The Dementia Peer Support Group held its first meeting on Friday, November 3 at the Seniors Village Hub, Nguluway Ngurang, 77 Kite Street.

At this stage, the plan is for the group to meet on the first Friday of every month except in January.

The group is one of a number of services being introduced by the Orange.

Community Dementia Alliance to make Orange more ‘dementia friendly’.

The Orange Community Dementia Alliance was formed in February and is made up of representatives from 17 local service providers, including Orange City Council. For more information, contact 6393 8600.

Ulysses Club Orange secretary Lee Cook hands over $1,000 to Can Assist Orange President Julie Goodacre (formerly Julie Corby) to help Can Assist ease the burden for cancer patients while they undergo treatment.

A little ‘can-do’ from the Ulysses Club for Can Assist he Orange branch of the over-40s social motorcycle group Ulysses Club has thrown a little welcome financial support to local cancer patient charity Can Assist.

“The Ulysses Club hub has a standard charity that supports the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation, and we’ve been happy to support that, but our committee recently thought, let’s do something with a local charity.

Prior to setting out on their weekly ride last Wednesday, November 1, club members presented Can Assist Orange President Julie Goodacre (formerly Julie Corby) with a cheque for $1,000 raised through the group’s weekly raffles.

“We actually have a couple of our members with ongoing issues with cancer at the moment — so it’s a bit close to our hearts — and we thought it would be very useful to support Can Assist which we know is doing a really good job here in Orange.”

“The motto of the Ulysses Club is ‘grow old disgracefully’ but we’re not actually a particularly disgraceful bunch,” Ulysses Club Orange Secretary Lee Cook said of the local group.

Founded in 1995, Can Assist is a grassroots, community charity that works to give financial assistance to cancer patients to ease the burden while they undergo treatment.

“Each week when we meet and at our monthly dinners, we have raffles and everyone gets a bit of a prize, a bit of chocolate or wine, and we always end up with the surplus which we regularly donate,” he explained.

“We pay their accounts, basically,” Can Assist Orange President Julie Goodacre said. “We pay anything. We pay rates, electricity, and food vouchers. They’ve been really important at the moment; people are really struggling with huge, huge electricity and gas accounts. And of course, the

priority is absolutely medication. We pay about 20 or 30 pharmacy accounts every month.”

In order to support people with cancer, Can Assist relies on donations and local fundraising.

“We have a wonderful team of volunteers and we have a monthly fundraiser at Duntryleague, our trivia nights… but, look, we’re so grateful for people like Ulysses who support us very much,” Julie said.

“It’s very dear to my heart. So many people are touched by cancer. You cannot believe how many referrals we are getting at the moment… we would have had three new referrals this week, and all the money we raise stays local.”

Want to own a piece of Australian automotive history?

R

etired local motor mechanic Greg Harvey is looking to find a good home for a little piece of Australian automotive history.

Twenty-six years since he rebuilt the car from the ground up, Greg is selling his beautifully restored 1952 FX Holden sedan.

The Holden 48-215, better known as the “FX,” is an icon of 1950s Australia. It was the first locally-made mass-produced car in Australia and the first General Motors car to bear the Holden badge.

This particular car was a labour of love for Greg who built it all himself from a bare shell he’d found at a mechanic shop in Crookwell.

“Well, I did the boys’ utes up when they were young and then it came my turn,” says Greg.

“Originally, I was after a ute, my first car was an FC Holden ute, but I missed out on one from the same chap where I brought this from in Crookwell by about three days! So he said he had this body down here which he’d been doing up but the wife wanted him to get rid of it. She wants a house finished.”

Greg spent three years rebuilding and restoring it in his workshop, fitting it with a

six-cylinder fuel-injected engine and lots of other unique additions.

“It’s basically a Commodore on an old body, rack-and-pinion steering and all that sort of stuff, you know, disc brakes and all that,” says Greg.

The car has travelled about 45,000 kilometres since Greg first got it back on the road and it has turned heads wherever it’s been.

“It’s a bit of everything, really. It’s got the VK Holden computer system, injection-wise, but the bottom end is what they call a ‘202’ and then the head is a 12-port head and it’s got a mild cam.

“It did,” Greg says, “lots of thumbs up and all the rest. But no, it’s all been good fun.

Time to move on though.”

“It’s not an everyday run-of-the-mill car, it’s been modified pretty highly and all engineered. But it’s time to get a bit of comfort, and this is why I decided to pass it

uring the 2022-2023 financial year, Orange Health Service received over $206,000 in donations from various, generous benefactors such as the United Hospital Auxiliary of Orange Hospital, Premi Babes and Orange Lions Club.

This amount also includes $54,000 of the United Hospital Auxiliary funds to assist community members pay for high cost medications for those in need. Orange Health Service would like to acknowledge these donations and express their appreciation, by sharing some photographs of some of the valuable items purchase.

The donated Sonosite Ultrasound machine helps to guide the proceduralists when gaining access for the cardiac procedure. This helps them to reduce the number of access attempts and other complications as well. Ultrasound guidance can be used for placing venous catheters as well for getting IV access. The Sonosite Ultrasound machine has been a wonderful addition to the Cardiac Cath lab.

The Ambulatory Care Unit would like to thank the Hospital Auxiliary in the purchase of the Smartdop 30EX. The trauma tray was acquired in 2023 through much appreciated Orange Hospital Auxillary funding. The trauma tray was an important requirement for Orange Hospital’s recent accreditation as a trauma referral hospital. The trauma tray contains a variety of surgical tools including clips, scissors, retractors and rib spreaders. This equipment may be useful in the rare case of major trauma that is too unstable to be transferred to the operating theatres, requiring surgical procedures in the emergency department.

The purchase of the two wheelchairs has provided multiple patients the opportunity to regain independence with mobility after suffering a stroke, we are so grateful for your support.

The Cardiac Catheter Lab would like to thank the Hospital Auxiliary for their generous donation to purchase the Hemochron System and the Sonosite Ultrasound. The Hemochron system is used to calculate the blood clotting time which is essential for the cardiac procedure performed at the Cardiac Cath Lab. The department is already using this machine and a lot of patients have benefitted from it.

Thank you to our wonderful Hospital Auxiliary for the sensor mats in the Rehabilitation Unit. These mats help us with falls prevention in such a significant way.

Once identified that a patient is at high risk of falling and he or she has a temporary or permanent cognitive deficit a sensor mat is placed beneath the patient and an alarm alerts nursing staff if the patient is attempting to get out of bed without assistance. We are incredibly grateful to the Orange Hospital Auxiliary for the purchase of this equipment as it helps us keep our patients safe.

Paediatrics and Theatres would like to thank The Lion’s Club for their generous donation which provided for the purchase of our Werewolf Coblation System. This system allows for tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies to be done using this equipment as day surgery, not requiring post-operative beds. This is particularly beneficial for children as it means they can go home if they live locally or utilise the Ronald McDonald House rather than be admitted to hospital.

Thank you kindly to the Hospital Auxiliary for funding two new Mauro chairs. These chairs are primarily used in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). They enable patients to sit out of bed comfortably for longer periods of time as they can be reclined. This is important as our ICU patients often quickly fatigue yet benefit from being more upright for their respiratory function. The chairs are on wheels so are used to safely transport patients to get fresh air and sunshine.

Cancer Services would like to say a huge thank you to the Hospital Auxiliary for purchasing the Bladder Scanner for our Haematology, Oncology and Palliative Ward. This wonderful piece of equipment you have donated has greatly assisted our team to provide excellent care for our patients. With the bladder scanner now available to use at any time, it has contributed to the efficiency and delivery of quality care that we strive to provide our patients.

Big turnout for NAIDOC Week gives hope for the future Local Wiradjuri elder Uncle Neil Ingram says the recent NAIDOC celebrations in Orange were the largest he’s seen, and show that reconciliation is alive and well in the Colour City.

Orange’s annual NAIDOC Week celebrations wrapped up on Saturday, October 28, with the NAIDOC Awards night at which Uncle Neil was awarded both Male Elder of the Year and Male Person of the Year for his many contributions to the community.

“It’s been a joy to serve the community of Orange for over 45 years,” Uncle Neil said.

“To be awarded with both the Male Elder of the Year and Male Person of the Year was a complete surprise to me. You don’t normally expect to receive two major awards at the same ceremony.”

Uncle Neil said he considered the awards

a great honour and he thanked all those who nominated him.

In the wake of the recent referendum on an Indigenous Voice to the federal parliament, which was surrounded by divisive public discourse, Uncle Neil said it was pleasing to see Orange people turn out in such great numbers for NAIDOC Week 2023.

“This was the biggest NAIDOC celebration that I have seen in Orange… probably one of the most successful events and probably one of the largest in participation,” he said.

“The NAIDOC march down Summer Street, and coming together at Robertson Park for the official opening, clearly demonstrated to me that Reconciliation is alive and well in Orange… there is still goodwill out there, and we need to embrace it together.”

T

his week, it was great to visit the wonderful and hardworking members of the Eugowra CWA! One year on from the devastating storm and flood, the group is more determined than ever to get their much-loved CWA Hall back up and running!

The group recently received a $20,000 Australian Government grant through Round 8 of the Stronger Communities Program to help restore the building back to its original condition.

BOOST FOR FLOOD-HIT EUGOWRA MUSEUM

I

n the twelve months since the devastating storms and floods hit Eugowra, the dedicated team of volunteers at the Eugowra Historical Museum and Bushranger Centre have been hell bent on bringing it back.

While the Eugowra branch called the building home, the hall was also a true community hub, featuring a pre-loved store filled to the brim with quality clothes and goods.

It's inspiring to see local CWA members push forward and persevere to turn the damaged hall into a space that can be enjoyed by the community for many years to come. The Eugowra CWA prove that when the going gets tough, the tough get going!

Like the great 'Braveheart' wagon which has stood tall and strong for 114 years, (even the storm and floodwaters could not move it), their determination to restore the museum has been unwavering.

t was great to be out at Borenore for the 70th Australian National Field Days!

Established in 1952, the Field Days is the oldest annual agricultural exhibition in the country.

There were hundreds of fantastic stalls and exhibits displaying the best of the best in agriculture and rural living!

As always I enjoyed stopping by the CWA stand to sample some of their scones!

This year, the Federal Government supported the event with a $25,000 grant!

In the meantime, the amazing volunteers are busy cleaning, restoring, and readying each artifact to go back on display, and proudly tell their piece of Eugowra's story.

CUMNOCK FASHION FUNDRAISER FOR FLOOD-HIT MOLONG BUSINESSES

70TH AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FIELD DAYS

This week, the group received a $20,000 grant, through the Stronger Communities Program, which will help to repair the lining of the building. Once works to the structure of the building are complete, it'll be a big step forward towards re-opening the Museum once more.

Days with $147,000 in grants to get them through COVID and $339,000 for the Education and Training Centre.

The Field Days are all about supporting and promoting agriculture. The wealth of our nation must be based on what we make, grow and sell. And that means agriculture and supporting its bright future in our area and across our country.

A huge thank you to Field Days Chair Sam Connell and his committee, Manager Jayne West and her team, and all the volunteers who put in so much to make the event amazing!

ho needs the runways of Paris or New York when our very own Cumnock turns on a fashion extravaganza like it did recently.

It was a terrific evening of community, fundraising and support for the storm and flood-hit businesses of Molong with Annabelle Gavin and her team organising an outstanding fashion show and market night at Cumnock Showground.

Thank you to everyone who supported these wonderful local businesses. With widespread insurance knockbacks, rebuilding and recovery has been a long, hard road. Let’s help them get back on their feet and shop local this Christmas!

he Orange Producer’s Garage Sale, the Colour City’s weekly local produce market, is celebrating its first birthday this Saturday.

Founded by local growers, the idea behind the Orange Producer’s Garage Sale was to make the abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables and other produce that’s grown in the Orange region easily available to people in Orange.

Founder of the Orange Producers Garage Sale, Edlyn Lockwood, her partner Alex, and his father had sold their fruit at markets on the East Coast for many years, but they decided there needed to be a regular opportunity for locals to buy locally-grown food, so it could become part of the weekly shop.

So since November last year, they and a variety of other local producers and makers have set up shop every Saturday in the small courtyard attached to Bill’s Beans East Orange in McLachlan Street.

“It’s been pretty steady. There’s lots of locals supporting it and that’s awesome; that’s the aim,” Edlyn Lockwood said.

“We see the same crew every week and it’s kind of like a big catch-up, which is really cool. We see a few visitors, but that’s not our target audience as such: the idea is that local people get local food. We should all be eating the stuff that’s grown here.”

Edlyn said they are also seeing their regulars getting acquainted with the seasonality of the local produce, getting to know what is in season and when.

“Coming into spring and summer is obviously very exciting, but we’ve still had regulars come through winter for the apples and the brassicas and things like that,” she said.

“But we’re on the cusp of cherry season — we might have cherries this Saturday. We’ve got lots of leafy greens and we still got a few brassicas, broccoli and stuff like that. Farmer Doug will be there with his potatoes as always, Edlyn continued.

“Melissa (Primal Alternative) does glutenfree breads and cakes and things and they’re there all the time.

“We’ve got Isaac from Cured who’s doing cured meats and sausages. And there’s Eddelen Flowers, the Cargo flower farm, they’ve all just come in and they’re beautiful — all very spring!”

Other regulars include Molly’s Grove olive oil, The Strawberry Lady, Peter’s Blueberries, and The Hairy Farmer Fruit and Veg. To celebrate the Orange Producers Garage Sale’s first birthday, Edlyn said they will be giving away a hamper of local produce worth $100 to one lucky market customer this Saturday.

“If people come in on the day, they can write their name and phone number down, and we’ll draw it out at the end of the market,” she said.

The Orange Producers Garage Sale takes place at Bills Beans East Orange courtyard, 148 McLachlan Street, every Saturday morning, 8am–1pm.

t is difficult to decide when Orange looks its best, but it’s hard to beat at this time of the year when the trees put on their best clothes and the gardens hurry to compete with their colourful displays.

And one of the best places to see this transformation is in Cook Park.

Cook Park was established way back in 1873, taking up an area of four hectares and is named after Captain James Cook, the first Englishman to discover Australia.

As well as the beautiful gardens you may have noticed the 24-pound bore cannon which was cast in 1806 at a foundry in Scotland. It was originally part of Fort Macquarie’s armament at Bennelong Point where the Sydney Opera House now stands, and was given to Orange in 1904

by Sydney City Council.

The first of the magnificent trees in the park were planted in the 1870s and are now today’s mature specimens.

The main fountain was given to the park by James Dalton in 1891 and was completely renovated a few years ago.

The park has always played a big part in the lives of most people in Orange. And visitors like Margaret Baker, who lived in Cowra before she came here permanently

After my exhilarating ride, I talked to Susie Fletcher and Michele Englart who belong to that social cycling group which has been going for about ten years. Michele was there at the beginning while Susie joined them three years later.

Aileen used to bring her daughter when she was four. “I would take her every afternoon after work and she would pick up cicadas and throw them at me because she knew I was scared of them. We would stay until 7pm in the summer and sometimes take our dinner there.”

This week there was a different visit to the park when the Orange Treadles introduced the residents of Wontama into the delights of Spring in a Trishaw.

It is called ‘Cycling without Age’ and their aim is to take the elderly and mobile for free and electric-assisted trishaws giving

“We ride twice a week doing thirty or forty kilometres,” Michele told me. “We go right into the country and wind our way back into the town and then have a coffee afterwards.”

“There are generally about eight women and twenty men,” added Susie. When I asked about equipment she replied: “We have to make sure our bikes are

“The plan is to provide the service to five nursing homes in Orange and we have 30 volunteers on our books already.”

The trishaws are electric-assisted threewheeled vehicles, very like a rickshaw, and when I had a ride I found it very comfortable. We went around Cook Park on a beautiful, blue day and the park looked stunning.

Helen Townsend of Wontama summed the whole thing up when she said: ”I went for a ride on a bike around Cook Park and they were very good to come all this way for us. They did a very good job.”

SPOOK-TACULAR STREET DISPLAY FOR HALLOWEEN PHOTOS BY CEC TILBURG As the popularity of the Halloween holiday gets bigger and bigger every year so too does the spooky front yard display at the home of Jessica and Steve Ellery-White.

Orange City Life photographer Cec Tilburg stopped by the haunting home on Tuesday October 31 to catch all the Trick-or-Treating fun.

It was a family affair with Jessica and Steve’s kids and even the grandparents helping out on the day, all dressing up in theme, ready to scare the kids as they walked through the spook-tacula front yard display.

The whole display takes a month of work to prepare and set it all up, before it is packed up and buried away to be brought back to life next year.

My favourite cooking herb

“What herb is a must in your cooking?” a reader asked me the other day. For me it is a no-brainer, it is definitely one of the most underestimated herbs here in Australia, but one of the most important ones in a lot of countries around the world: I’m talking about bay leaf.

Firstly we should know that bay leaves grow on a tree called Laurus nobilis, commonly known in Australia as bay or bay laurel. Orange is packed with bay trees, and I’ve realised that not many people know how to use it. That’s why today I’m going to give you a tip: please don’t spend money buying bay leaves (they are everywhere).

Make sure you find a tree near your house or, if you know a neighbour who has some, ask them nicely, and start putting them in your cooking. Simply cut some branches and hang them upside down in your house. I love putting them in a vase in my living room because they look rustic and pretty. And, at the same time, I dry them little-by-little for later on using them in my cooking. A win-win in my opinion.

Remember bay leaves will add a subtle aroma and depth to your recipes. The flavour changes depending if you use them fresh or when they are dry. Bay leaves contain a number of enzymes that help break down certain proteins in

meat, making them easier to digest. That probably explains why it is used in so many cultures in marinades and adobo recipes.

Historically bay leaves have a lot of symbolism, especially in Greece and Rome.

It became an ornamental symbol of honour and success, and was worn by Roman and Greek emperors, Olympians, scholars, heroes and poets. It is overwhelming to see how many cuisines use them traditionally as a staple in their pantries: in all the Mediterranean countries of course, but as well in India with some rice dishes like biryani or as an ingredient in garam masala. In the Philippines with menudo and adobos. Mexicans use them for

chile verde, beans and soups. In Arabinfluenced dishes such as massaman curry and in Caribbean dishes with soups and stews. I’ve even seen, in some finedining restaurants, how they use them as seasoning by smoking and crushing them, making delicious flavouring salts with them, in gels, foams, etc.

As you can see, whether you choose to use bay leaves fresh or dry, whole or crushed, they will make your cooking heaps better. The first recipe I would like you to learn with them? Definitely in a traditional homemade tomato sauce. It is super-versatile and easy to use later on.

Homemade tomato sauce: INGREDIENTS: 2 garlic cloves peeled and chopped finely 1 onion peeled and sliced finely 1 splash of extra virgin olive oil 400g grated fresh (or tinned) tomatoes 1 bay leaf Seasoning ½ tsp sugar (or a splash of ketchup for a bit of sweetness)

METHOD: 1. Cut tomatoes in half and grate them in a bowl with a cheese grater: by doing so you will remove the skin and you’ll end up getting just the pulp, juices and seeds of the tomatoes.

2. In a frying pan on medium-low heat, add a splash of olive oil and fry the garlic and onion until soft. Be patient with this step, don’t rush it!

3. Add the grated tomatoes then the sugar, bay leaf, and season well.

Simmer until everything is well reduced and yummy. You can leave it like this or blend it with a hand blender or Mixmaster (remember to remove the bay leaf before doing so).

4. Use it as you please for your pasta, pizza, ratatouille, shakshuka for brekky, stews, etc. Or freeze it until you need it.

Folk Vs Pop at Rosnay this Friday, November 10 When Canowindra folk singer/songwriter Nerida Cuddy reunited with her Nashvillebased cousin Paul Colman for the first time in years, it didn’t take them long to decide to make music together.

Paul, who spent the last 22 years as a musician in the USA based in Nashville, signed on to produce Nerida’s next album, which is being recorded in Canowindra.

The pair have had a lot of fun preparing songs for the album and decided to hold a shared concert, where a few pieces could be recorded with a live audience.

To celebrate their first joint performance, they will stage a mock folk vs pop battle, a “song-off ” where the cousins will trade “blows” and go song for song in a spontaneous and entertaining musical

challenge this Friday night at the Rosnay Wines cellar door.

Nerida Cuddy is an evocative folk singer/ songwriter whose songs reflect emotional depth, breathing the landscape of rural Australia. Described as “a central west Mary Black”, her story-based concerts create space for connection and reflection, humour and fun.

Paul Colman is a Grammy-nominated singer/ songwriter and a world-class entertainer.

He has performed in over 50 countries and released numerous albums under his own name and with his band, The Paul Colman Trio.

I’m getting excited because this weekend our band (Town Hall String Band) is playing at a bush dance. It is shaping up to be a really fun night. The forecast is looking great. Everything is coming together. All we need to do now is kick up our heels and get ready to ‘strip the willow’ and ‘heel and toe’ all evening. As our band has been practicing for this gig, I hadn’t realised just how much these tunes and dances have been embedded in my memory.

I remember my own mum’s 40th birthday party in country Tasmania.

She and a friend decided to have a combined bush dance with a great local folk band. I remember that, even at the age of 10, I had an absolute ball. During my years at high school in Tassie, during the winter months when it was too cold and wet to be outside for our sport classes, we would learn dances in the hall. We learnt some basic ballroom dancing, the Nutbush and Macarena, but also several of the dances we’ll be doing this Saturday night. This meant that as we’ve been rehearsing, I’ve been taken on a trip down memory lane and I’ve loved every minute of it. As I think about the upcoming event – as much as I’m loving being in the band with this bunch of guys, and I love being able to make music with them – part of me wants to be on the dance floor. I guess I’ll just have to heel and toe from my

double bass and learn how to do the ‘Waves of Bondi’ whilst playing.

But why put on a bush dance?

At Orange Presbyterian Church, where I am the pastor, one of the key passages in The Bible that shapes who we are is Mark 12:3031 where Jesus says: ‘And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.’

And what does this have to do with a bush dance? We are putting this on because we love Orange. We want to put on something fun for our community. For people to come along and have an evening of great fun, hanging out with other people.

But it also has another purpose.

We are wanting to show our love to our neighbours in raising some much-needed funds for our friends at FoodCare. This is a wonderful local charity that is providing much needed support and care to those in need. So, if you’re around this coming Saturday, November 11, why not come along for a fun night of dancing at the Bloomfield Hall from 5pm? Tickets are $5 for an individual and $20 for a family and it includes sausages. You can purchase your tickets online, just search for Orange Presbyterian Church on Facebook. Hope to see you there!

What does it mean to believe?

The census statistics tell us that a majority of Australians believe in God. But what does it mean to believe in God? Is belief in God simply thinking that he exists? That might be a starting point, but that is not the same as believing in God. To say that I believe my wife exists is not the same as saying I believe in her.

The words ‘belief’ and ‘faith’ and ‘trust’ essentially mean the same thing. To have faith in someone means that you will trust them. When we trust people, when we believe in them; it impacts on the way we relate with them. We will relate with them in ways that demonstrate that deep trust.

To believe in God means to trust him, to accept him as God. Do you believe in God? What difference does that belief actually make? If you think he really does exist, maybe it is time to work out what it means that he is God, and what it might mean to trust him. A great place to start is to start listening to him by reading his words in The Bible.

Even a “petty” traffic offence is still a traffic offence and therefore a law has been broken. If the offender sticks to the rules of the road (including speed limits) then he/ she would never have any problems with the traffic police.

They were on an unregistêred motorbike, neither of them had helmets and here’s the kicker: the rider was wearing thongs. This stupidity appears to be happening all over Orange at the moment and needs to be called out and reported to the police every time. If the police keep getting complaints about this they might get just as sick of it as the rest of us.

THUMBS DOWN to the female staff member at a hospitality business who was on her phone while customers were waiting to be served. Not a care in the world about the business.
