This week, I enjoyed having a little dive into the Trove archives again after spotting a reference to the popularity of ‘handball’ as a sport in Orange during the 1880s. Not the common schoolyard game, but a sport played on a walled court like squash, but with your bare hand and with a hard cork ball! I had been completely unaware of the sport, but it’s still played in places around the world and enjoyed popularity in Orange for quite some time. Orange even boasted a national champion!

Inside you will also find my chat with local author Stuart Lloyd on his latest book, a biography on the iconic Australian band Mental As Anything. This is Stu’s 19th book and certainly different in content to his last, which was on the 1942 massacre at Alexandra Hospital in Singapore during the Second World War. But there are lots of good yarns in the book for Aussie music fans of the period and we’ve even been lucky enough to include an excerpt from his book, Started Out Just Drinking Beer — The Mental as Anything Story, which you’ll find on page 10.

“The only game then played in Orange was handball…”

“Where stands now the Carrington Hotel, at the corner of Byng Street and Lord’s Place, Mrs Elliott kept another hotel, but it was not the Carrington then. Further along Lord’s Place, to the north, was the White Hart…

There was situated the old handball court of Orange. The only game then played in Orange was handball.”

The origins of the handball are lost in time, but some claim the ancient Greeks and Romans played versions of the game and variants are played the world over.

It was the above reminiscence of local pubs in the 1880s* that grabbed our attention here at OC Life and led to us to once again delve into the newspaper archives on Trove to find out more about this handball craze in Orange.

“The server stands near the centre wall of the court, he bounces the ball on the floor, then drives it with his hand hard against the wall. It rebounds high and fast down the court. The battle is on.”

“Handball is a faster tennis without racquets,” wrote a sportswriter describing a revival of the game in Adelaide during the 1930s.

The boxer Tommy Burns is said to have played many strenuous games of handball in preparation to meet Jack Johnson at the Sydney Stadium for the heavyweight title in 1908. Handball, he said, was the fastest game that could be played and he used it to liven up the footwork he was noted for.

The handball referred to above is not the common schoolyard “hand tennis” most readers today would be familiar with, although they no doubt come from the same origins. The game was somewhat like squash or racquetball and played in a three-walled court with a hard, twine- and leather-wrapped cork ball like a small cricket ball.

by the then licensee, a Mr Rice. The game was introduced and principally played by young Irishman, one of whom was a man named Langham who claimed to have been the Irish champion. As the game grew in popularity, it wasn’t long before Orange had its own local champion, Jimmy Keenan, who went on to become champion of Australia.

Contemporary sportswriters rated Keenan as one of the best players of the game anywhere in the world in his day.

“Keenan was a wonderful handballer,” recalled Jack Gillespie to a journalist of the Orange Leader, when the old White Hart Hotel courts were finally demolished in 1937.

Keenan, said Gillespie, once defeated three top handballers on his own, three against one. “He won easily, serving aces with the hardball,” he added.

It was around 1902 that a “soft ball” replaced the hard, cork ball in the local game, which was then played at a court adjacent to

The zenith of local popularity in the sport was reached in the early 1920s. The foremost players of the period in Orange were then said to include Charles Walker, Fred Press, Jack Gillespie, Bill McKellar, and Bill Carroll.

In 1939, the 60th anniversary of the game’s introduction to Orange was celebrated with the official opening of a “modern championship court” at De La Salle College in Summer Street.

Jack McMurtrie, who provided information on the history of the game in Orange for an address delivered at this occasion, said he considered handball to be superior to both cricket and football, “the ‘daddy’ sport of them all, both as a game and as an exercise.”

“If the young men of today could be enticed to place a few games,” he added, “they would realise that what I have written is true in every detail.”

RURAL WOMEN’S GATHERINGS RETURNS TO ORANGE NEXT WEEK Orange is preparing to host women from across rural, regional and remote NSW for the annual Rural Women’s Gathering on November 25-26.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Gathering which first took place in Orange in 1993.

The two-day event was created to provide rural women with support, information and skills to address the challenges they may face living in a rural location.

“LEST WE FORGET” ORANGE REMEMBERS FALLEN VETS On Saturday, November 11, 105 years after the end of hostilities in the First World War, a large crowd of Orange locals gathered at the Cenotaph in Robertson Park to remember our fallen veterans on Remembrance Day. More than 200 people attended this year’s Remembrance Day service, said Orange RSL Sub-Branch President Chris Colvin, who was pleased to see that the tradition is alive and well.

“The crowd was absolutely brilliant. It was really well attended and there were a lot of younger veterans there this year that we haven't seen before,” Mr Colvin said.

“And the students from Orange High were absolutely fantastic with all the things they did for us which included reading poetry, singing and also giving the commemorative address.”

Remembrance Day is observed on November 11 each year to mark the end of First World War hostilities on "the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" of 1918.

COUNCIL WELCOMES MILESTONE TOWARDS GREYHOUND RACING IN ORANGE Orange City Council has reached a preliminary agreement with the Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association (GBOTA) to sell land on Orange’s eastern outskirts for a new greyhound track and complex.

In a decision at last Tuesday (November 7) night’s meeting, Council noted that a heads of agreement (pre-contractual agreement) had been reached between Council and GBOTA to sell the land in Perc Griffith Way and to endorse the terms of the sale.

Orange Mayor, Councillor Jason Hamling welcomed news of the agreement.

“Greyhound racing has a long history in Orange and I’m delighted we’ve reached this milestone towards bringing a high-quality track complex back to Orange,” Cr Hamling said.

“There are many greyhound breeders in Orange who will be excited by this decision and who are looking forward to being able to race locally again.”

The terms of the agreement are to remain confidential until the sale contract is finalised.

FREE ‘WELCOME TO SUMMER’ COMMUNITY DAY AT ORANGE AQUATIC CENTRE Orange City Council’s ‘Welcome to Summer’ community day returns to Orange Aquatic Centre this Sunday, November 19.

Visitors to the pool can enjoy free entry between 8am and 7 pm, this Sunday, with a free sausage sizzle from noon to 2:30pm.

Weather permitting, the Aquatic Centre’s inflatables, along with the one-metre and three-metre springboards are ready for pool patrons to make a splash all day long at no extra cost, just pure aquatic fun.

Last year’s event was a huge success, with about 1000 people enjoying the day, Orange City Council’s Sport and Recreation Community Committee Chair, Cr Tammy Greenhalgh said.

“The Welcome to Summer community day at the aquatic centre is such a popular event and I encourage residents to take advantage of the free entry and come along for a great day of fun at the pool. What better way to celebrate the upcoming summer,” Cr Greenhalgh said.

“Let’s keep it cool and sun safe. Slather on that sunscreen, rock those shades and, for the kids aged 11 and under, make sure there’s a responsible adult keeping watch.”

“Your involvement will not only contribute to the success of the show but also foster a stronger sense of community spirit.”

Launch of community project making cycling accessible for all ages

C

ycling Without Age Orange, the newest chapter of the international program that provides free rides on an electric trishaw for people who can no longer ride a bicycle, was officially launched in Cook Park last Wednesday, November 8.

Residents of five aged care facilities across Orange will now be able to take a ride on the trishaw at one of three locations, Cook Park, Gosling Creek Reserve, and the Orange Botanic Gardens.

The local group formed more than twelve months ago, raising the money to purchase a trishaw, trailer and a container to store it in.

Now, after months of training and preparation, 30 volunteers from the Orange

Treadlies cycling group, will be regularly offering the thrill of cycling to aged care residents.

At the moment, 16 aged care facility residents a week will enjoy a leisurely ride at the two weekly sessions, but the group has big plans to purchase more trishaws and expand the program to include a wider section of the community including younger people who cannot use a bike themselves.

Cycling Without Age Orange Cheryl Pope said the whole idea is to allow people to reconnect with their community.

“There is no shortage of people living in care. There is no shortage of people living with disabilities,” she said.

Cheryl said she was struck by the

comments of one aged care facility resident during a recent test ride.

“The first thing she said to me was ‘I haven’t been to Cook Park for years’. Yet she lives over the road from it,” she said.

“My motivation comes from being a keen cyclist and having had a mother in aged care. I know how important being able to be outdoors was to her.”

Cheryl believes the project is also valuable to the volunteers themselves and encourages anyone interested in joining up to get in touch.

“I know that the generosity of our volunteers will bring joy and enrichment to many riders and put smiles on the faces of all involved,” she said. “Everyone has a

great experience.”

The $17,700 European-designed and Australian-assembled Trio Bike Taxi is pedalpowered with assistance from an electric motor.

Cheryl said the project had been generously supported by local businesses and Orange City Council with major funding from Cadia Valley Operations ($20,000), the NSW government following work by the member for Orange Phil Donato ($8500), the Orange Ex-Services’ Club ($7400), the Orange Runners Festival ($3100) and Westfund ($3000).

Orange author Stuart Lloyd sorts truth from fiction in first biography of Australia’s hardest-working band “To me, it was just such a great untold Aussie story,” says Orange Author Stuart Lloyd of his latest book, a superbly researched and written official biography of one of Australia’s most popular bands, Mental As Anything.

“It was essentially five guys who enjoyed a cold beer and had a red-hot go at it. They had no ambition. No plan. They fell into it.

And it turned out to be this mighty 43-yearlong musical marathon that was beyond their wildest dreams.”

Started Out Drinking Beer – The Mental As Anything Story is Stuart’s 19th non-fiction book. Written with unfettered access to all the key players it’s full of untold stories behind Aussie classics like: Live It Up, Too Many Times, If You Leave Me Can I Come Too? Berserk Warrior, Egypt, The Nips Are Getting Bigger, and more.

Plus there are plenty of tales from the road as told by band members Andrew “Greedy” Smith, Martin Plaza, Deve “Bird” Twohill, Peter O’Doherty, Reg Mombasa and a starstudded cast including Colin Hay, Richard Gottehrer, Mark Opitz, Ross Wilson and Wreckless Eric.

As a former music journalist writing for publications such as Variety (US), The Australian, Sydney Morning Herald, and Songsmith, Stuart has had the opportunity to sit across from some of the world’s great songwriters like Paul Kelly, Bic Runga, Jimmy

Webb and R.E.M. But the chance to write the Mental As Anything story was a particular thrill, he says.

“The second gig I ever went to was Mental as Anything,” explains Stuart, who has always been fascinated by songwriting and describes himself as — not a failed songwriter, just a songwriter who hasn’t had a hit… yet!

“And here was a whole bunch of songs that I grew up with, formative years stuff, that’s been the backdrop to my life and my misspent youth — and misspent adulthood.

So to speak to the guys about hey, how did that song come about? What does it actually mean? And some of the back stories behind these great Aussie classics are surprising and fantastic!”

Having got to know the band members over the years through the music and art scene, Stuart first floated the idea of a book 20 years ago.

“But then the funny thing was, at that point everybody in the band had their favourite rock journalist, who was interested in writing the Mental as Anything story,” he explains.

“So I didn’t think anything more of it and went off into the sunset. Over the years, I guess all the rock journalists either died of cirrhosis or fell off the perch somehow.”

“So last year after I just finished my last military history book… I was thinking I would

like to tackle something very different and lighter and I thought, ‘the Mentals’. Nobody still had written their story and I couldn’t believe it,” says Stuart, who then began researching the project, before finally approaching the band members themselves.

“Reg, bless him, he just said, ‘Hey, let’s make this worth your while and make it worth our while. Let’s do it properly. And so that was great. Then he got his brother in and we went from there.

In writing the book, Stuart approached former managers, roadies, friends and associates to go beyond a generic datesand-gigs memoir and get into what really made the band tick.

“I was really trying to get beyond the sort of shiny, happy people that you saw on stage, get beyond the cardboard cutouts and get to something ‘3D’... just really unpacked the guys – and trust me there’s a lot to unpack! They are very interesting, complex, creative characters,” says Stuart.

“Yet they were so productive, so prolific.

They would have us believe that they were these laconic creatures of leisure, yet on average through the 80s they released one single every three months, which is just phenomenal.”

Sorting through all the varying accounts and differing memories (or complete lack thereof) of the main players certainly presented some challenges in writing the

book, according to Stuart, who describes his role as being somewhat like a referee at times.

“I made it clear that. I’m going to stand in the middle. I’m going to hear everybody’s viewpoint. And then, I’m going to go with the most likely version of events… where the facts are not ultimately very clear — late one drunken night, what happened? – I’m going to referee, and I’m going to go with the most probable version,” says Stuart.

“And it’s funny, the feedback I got from Reg was, ‘Wow! You know more than we do!’ And, Dave, when he looked at the first manuscript said, ‘Wow, I had no idea I’d seen so much until I read your book!’ I think they were interested to see what I made of the story.”

Matthew Farrelly finds voice through art SOLO ART EXHIBITION THIS SATURDAY

L

ocal artist Matthew Farrelly may not be able to speak, but he lets his paintbrush do the talking for him.

This Saturday afternoon, November 18, Matt is having an exhibition of his work at the Ever Upward Church Hall, at the corner of Churchill and Glenroi Avenues.

Matt’s disabilities mean he is non-verbal and unable to stand or walk unaided, but through his love of painting, he is able to express his thoughts and feelings about the world around him.

Art has been a life-long passion for Matt, who first showed interest at the age of four. It also runs in the family as his siblings are also

gifted artists.

Matthew loves to have movement in his work and paints ethereally with bright, vibrant colours.

Matt’s mother Wendy says he finds pleasure in being able to express himself and his ideas on the canvas.

Matthew has contributed art to many local exhibitions where he has sold paintings and won prizes.

This Saturday’s solo exhibition will be open from 12.30pm to 6pm, Matt himself will be there at 2.40pm All paintings sold at the exhibition will help support Matt in his passion for art.

‘People started asking, “What’s the name of your band?”’ remembers bassist Steve Coburn. That band’s first gig had been at his sister Kristin’s 21st birthday party a couple of months earlier: March 1976. They’d played all the covers they knew a few times through because they didn’t have enough songs.

to us that he had to have a name.

We really weren’t that serious,’ says drummer Dave Twohill. It so happened that poet Ken Bolton was watching them play in a pub, when he overheard someone, say: ‘Oh, they’re mental as anything!’

‘It was a saying at the time,’ says Steve. The expression was Aussie slang meaning crazy, over the top, extreme fun. Bolton mentioned that comment to someone in the band.

‘There might have been a week there where it was like, okay, we have to think of a name by the next rehearsal,’ says Dave. ‘I do remember thinking of names that were really Aussie and jingoistic, like the Kookaburras or something. But

straight away.’ But Coburn’s father (the famous artist John Coburn) didn’t: ‘He said, “That’s a terrible name — that’ll never take off!”’ laughs Steve. ‘He had to live with that the rest of his life — the band became more famous than him.’

Lead singer/ guitarist Martin Murphy tells the story of the band walking down the street and seeing this poster for Mental as Anything playing at The Settlement on May 14. Dave then said, ‘Wait a minute, I thought we were playing there?’

And something like that, folks, is how they became Mental as Anything.

Then the name Mental as Anything was scribbled onto the shortlist, which was given to Worstead to decide. ‘The band submitted a piece of paper with a few names on it,’ confirms Worstead. ’Mental as Anything struck me so I used that.’

Following the same format, Dave became Wayne Delisle. The inspiration for that was two sources: Wayne DeGruchy, the manager of John Paul Young. ‘And I was the disowned son of General DeLisle, a real guy.’ Indeed, General Sir Henry de Beauvoir De Lisle, KCB KCMG DSO, was a Boer War and First World War veteran, commander of a British division at Gallipoli. Dave’s Wayne Delisle got augmented by Seabird because they reckoned he was like a seagull round hot chips when it came to food. Seabird got shortened to Bird over time.

Martin played with the name of Sydney’s civic heart known as Martin Place, but somehow mangled it into Martin Plaza instead. That one stuck.

To say nothing of new keyboard player Andy Smith who — clearly famished one afternoon at a student party gig in Darlinghurst — polished off a bucket of 15 (some say 16) chicken pieces with his left hand, while he played through the set list with his right hand. ‘He’d probably had a few beers, a hamburger and a milkshake as well,’ says Chris who pinned Greedy on him. (The KFC bucket and a slab of beer was the band’s payment for performing.)

hether you’re already paying for financial advice or thinking about getting financial advice, this is worth a few minutes of your time…

How you pay for financial advice matters!

Don’t take my word for it… there is a group called Super Consumers Australia (SCA) who are “the people’s advocate in the superannuation sector”. They “work hard to keep the super industry accountable and fair.” They’ve partnered up with CHOICE, Australia’s leading consumer advocacy group.

One of the targets of SCA are the conflicts of interest that exist in the financial advice and superannuation spaces.

When it comes to financial advice, SCA believe that asset-based fees, that is, percentage-based fees, represent the most egregious conflict of interest as they “bear no relationship” with the work done by the adviser.

SCA is just the latest in a long line of

groups and individuals trying to increase people’s awareness of this conflict of interest.

Alan Kohler, who presents the ABC News finance report most nights, has been writing about this for years. He has previously written ”there are three problems with percentage fees, even though they might seem a good thing: 1. Most people don’t understand percentages or the principle of compounding; 2. The fee grows at the same rate as contributions plus investment return, which is typically much greater than wage inflation and rent, and thus the adviser’s costs; 3. The fees go on and on, bearing no relationship to the service actually provided in a particular year.”

There are businesses, including mine, who recognise this perceived conflict of interest and therefore choose not to charge advice fees on a percentage basis.

So, if you are already paying for advice

or thinking about getting financial advice make sure you are clear on what you will be paying in fees. Shop around. Ask questions.

Don’t solely rely on a recommendation as many people don’t understand what they are paying or how they are being charged.

If your advice fees are being paid from your superannuation, you may not even be aware how much you are paying for advice.

Powers of Attorney & Appointment of Enduring Guardians Part 1

When meeting with clients for their Will and estate planning, we often end up talking about what is to happen in the event of an illness, accident or incapacity before death. There are some important legal documents which should be set up. Here are some frequently asked questions: What’s the difference between Enduring Powers of Attorney and Appointments of Enduring Guardianship documents?

The term ‘enduring’ can appear in both documents and causes confusion. Enduring in these documents means ‘lasting’; that the document remains valid and effective and in force even if you lose your capacity, in other words, they endure beyond your mental capacity.

A Power of Attorney is a legal document in which you appoint a person or people you trust to manage your legal and financial life if you are unable or unwilling to manage it yourself.

With the Power of Attorney, this can include (but is not limited to) allowing your attorney to manage bank accounts, investments, shares and other assets and use your money to buy, sell, lease, mortgage your house or other real estate investments.

An Appointment of Enduring Guardian allows your trusted person or people to make decisions about the personal side of your life, including where you would live or what medical or dental treatment you should or should not receive in the event you lose the capacity to make these decisions yourself.

Take the opportunity to ‘check in’ with your solicitor and confirm that all is in order and up to date with your legal affairs and documents including your Will, Power of Attorney, Appointment of Enduring Guardian and Advance Care Directive. Take the opportunity to ensure the people you appointed are still able and willing to perform the role entrusted to them.

Collection Focus:

After the Fires This painting in Orange Regional Gallery’s collection is one of the highlights included in our new permanent collection exhibition.

This hugely popular work was painted by David Rose and depicts a landscape devastated by the 2005 bushfires at Kariong, along the NSW Central Coast.

As well as being an artist, David Rose (19362006) was a trained forester. Trees were central to his life, and were a recurring subject in his art.

‘After the Fires at Kariong’ presents a subject we all know. As we experience longer and hotter fire seasons, the painting seems to grow in significance. This tree – still standing – can be seen as a symbol of resilience and hope amidst the desolation.

I’ve heard many people comment on how much they love this painting, both at Orange Regional Gallery, and when we’ve installed it at Orange Health Service. It seems that people find it calming, beautiful and powerful.

David Rose portrays the smoothness of the bark particularly well, using a semi-transparent glazing technique to model the form and surface texture of the trunk and branches. By way of contrast, Rose mixed sand into the grey areas on the ground surrounding the tree where the ash has settled thickly.

The artist has emphasised the rusty colour of the Angophora eucalypt by essentially reducing the entire palette of the image to a play between two main colours; a charcoal and a red-ochre. It’s surprising the range you can achieve by simply mixing varying amounts of just two colours together, and Rose uses this to great effect.

Even the colour of the sky—that ashen space behind the scene—is painted with a very light tint of the same grey on the ground, giving the effect of a lingering haze.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE ENTHUSIASTS ‘PLAY FOR SHEEP STATIONS’ TOURING EXHIBITION THIS SATURDAY SHINES LIGHT ON LIFE DURING WWII A touring exhibition from the Australian National Maritime Museum that shines a light on life at home during World War II is now on display at the Orange Regional Museum.

Capturing the Home Front: Life at home in a world at war features 48 stunning photographs captured by famous American photojournalist Dorothea Lange, and Australian photographers Samuel Hood, William Cranstone, Hedley Keith Cullen and Jim Fitzpatrick.

Reproduced from national and international collections, the images reveal the remarkable parallels between Australia and the USA during the war in the Pacific including in industry, family life, the role of women, and Japanese internment.

The images range from candid records that capture the intimacy of unplanned encounters between photographer and subject, to modernist techniques used to portray industry, to the deliberately composed scenes of soft propaganda.

Capturing the Home Front: Life at home in a world at war will be on display at the Orange Regional Museum until February 11, 2024.

The Sheep Station Classic is not just an opportunity to witness top-tier Ultimate Frisbee in action but also a chance to get involved in the sport. After the tournament, there will be a free introductory session for anyone aged 14 or older who wants to try their hand at Ultimate Frisbee. Expert coaches and experienced players will be on hand to guide you through the basics and you will even walk away from the session with an official size and weight frisbee of your own.

We must never forget the courage, valour and sacrifice of all those men and women who have served this nation in war, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

“The Welcome to Summer community day at the aquatic centre is such a popular event and I encourage residents to take advantage of the free entry and come along for a great day of fun at the pool. What better way to celebrate the upcoming

MATES in Construction, a not-for-profit charity, is dedicated to turning around the harrowing statistic that sees over 190 Australian construction workers take their lives each year. Construction workers are also up to eight times more likely to die by suicide than through workplace accidents.

The 9-hole Golf Day was hosted by GJ Gardner and held at Wentworth Golf Club.

“The generosity of GJ Gardner and the Orange community is overwhelming,” CEO of MATES in Construction NSW Brad Parker said. “The funds raised are crucial to sustaining our efforts in NSW, providing onthe-ground awareness training, community development programs, case management, and a 24/7 helpline.”

Local Soloists to Shine in Mendelssohn’s

Elijah

Audiences in Orange are being offered a rare treat of musical splendour this Sunday, November 19, when local solo singers will join combined choirs and orchestra, in performances of Felix Mendelssohn’s magnificent oratorio, Elijah.

Under the baton of Philip Rees, Allegri Singers, together with the Willoughby Singers, Orange Regional Conservatorium Symphonic Choir, Orange Regional Conservatorium Chamber Choir and the KWS Koristers, accompanied by the Orange Symphony Orchestra, will make up a formidable ensemble of well over 100 voices and players.

Baritone, William Moxey, will take the part of Elijah. William has enjoyed a stellar career as a singer, performing in numerous distinguished vocal groups on the international stage. He is in his 17th year as Musical Director of the Allegri Singers. As a voice tutor and choral director, he has always been passionate in his encouragement of aspiring singers of all ages, with a special interest in young performers.

role of Obadiah. As a graduate of the Royal College of Music, and Sydney University, Michael has performed extensively throughout Europe and Australia. His fine voice and sensitive musical interpretation will be a very welcome return to the Allegri Singers ensemble.

Mezzo soprano, Ellena Hicks also makes a welcome return to the ensemble, taking on the roles of Angel, and Queen Jezebel.

Studying a Masters of Music Studies (Opera Performance), she already has a reputation as a fine choral singer, and as a solo performer in numerous productions, has won several prestigious awards.

Soprano Ayse Gokner Shanal has experience in a wide range of musical forms, here and internationally. She is the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards. Her wonderful voice in the roles of Widow and Angel, will no doubt delight audiences, many of whom will be familiar with her outstanding artistry.

Soloists also join together for choral ensembles and minor solo parts will be taken by some accomplished young

soloists, including tenor, Joseph Trumble and treble voice, Sienna Flannery.

A more social way to enjoy garlic If you ask me about one local ingredient that blows my mind, it’s one that not many people use at home yet, not many people know how to use it, and the one that will feel like a treat when served it.

Any guesses? I’m talking about garlic scapes.

Garlic scapes are the long green shoots that grow from the garlic bulb, and they are an amazing way to add garlicky flavour to your favourite dishes (trust me, they are delicious). They’re a much milder than garlic cloves, which make them perfect for sautee with your veggies, stir-fry with meat or chicken, with seafood or even fish.

One of my favourite dishes with them here in Orange is the bossam dish that Korean restaurant Mr Lim’s serve: slowcooked pork belly and cucumber. A san choy bao version that makes me salivate every single time that we go!

I was first introduced to garlic scapes by local expert Dougal Munro and, since then, it has been a total love at first sight thing for me. Imagine something you can use as if it was a shallot or an asparagus, but tastes like a mild garlic. My advice?

Chop it fine and use it in scrambled eggs, frittatas, rice dishes, pasta, or even infuse some extra virgin olive oil with it. You’ll see how after a couple of days the oil will be

absolutely gold. Trust me, the options with this product are absolutely endless!

Garlic scapes are a good source of protein, vitamin C and calcium and, like garlic cloves, can help to prevent heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and cancer. They can also provide immune system support and reduce inflammation.

How to store them you may be wondering? Very easy. Same as you would do with any other greens if you are going to use them soon, or you can even freeze them, having garlic back-up for the rest of the year.

Gambas al ajillo recipe INGREDIENTS:

METHOD:

750g raw prawns, peeled, butterflied.

1. Peel and butterfly the raw prawns. Season them well.

¾ cup extra virgin olive oil. salt, to season.

3. Add the garlic scapes and fry for a few minutes.

2 garlic scapes, sliced finely.

4. Add the chilli and prawns and fry for five minutes or so, or until the prawns change colour and look cooked.

2 dried red chillies.

1 tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley.

1 crusty baguette, to serve. @atableof10 24

2. Heat the medium saucepan with the extra virgin olive oil over medium heat.

5. Add the chopped parsley. Transfer to a serving dish and serve immediately with crusty bread.

Where to get it? Well, you can see it in some supermarkets, but I do recommend you to get in contact with our local garlic farmers. The more demand they have, the less scapes go to waste (yep, if we don’t ask for them they discard them, which is a complete waste of an amazing local product).

ORANGE PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP Affiliated with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) Firstly, the group would like to thank you for the article on prostate cancer you published recently. This is the first article that has explained the complexities of prostate cancer that has been published locally for many years… although many articles have been submitted, the local press feel party pictures are more important. Ladies, look up this article and make sure your men folk read it. It is terribly important that men know their family medical history.

At the last meeting of the group, we were successful with the aid of the prostate nurse in helping another newly diagnosed prostate sufferer understand his problem. Recently we have been able to assist three newly-diagnosed men and their carers ease their anxiety over being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Cudal Twilight Christmas Markets are back!

Saturday, November 25 from 4pm One year ago this week the small town of Cudal was devastated by unprecedented flooding.

So many homes, businesses, bridges and roads went underwater that locals feared the annual Christmas markets would also be a casualty of the floods. But Cudal stood tall and people from right around the region flocked to the event making it a huge success.

This year, the Cudal Twilight Christmas Markets promises to be bigger and better with a new venue at the Cudal Showgrounds.

There will be live music, many food vendors, 50 market stalls, free entertainment for the kids, face painting, inflatables, circus performers, bungee run, mechanical bull, dart ball and more.

It all starts at 4pm on Saturday, November 25 with Santa Claus making a special appearance. Thanks to generous funding from Cabonne Shire Council this year’s markets are free to enter.

There has been a campaign for the last three years called ‘BINS4Blokes’ to help get more continence product disposal bins in male toilets. Recently PCFA has combined with the Continence Foundation to try and get more organisations, councils and businesses to install these bins in their male toilets.

Around 1.34 million Australian males are living with urinary and / or bowel cancer, including many men with prostate cancer. If you can help, please contact our group via Charlie 6361-1830.

Our next meeting is our Christmas supper meeting, and the last for 2023. Make a special effort to attend even if it is the only meeting you attend for the year. You and your carer will be most welcome. Dress in your best Christmas attire (if the Orange weather will allow it) and make it a fun night. REMEMBERING THE LOST. Last Saturday was a day to remember.

It was a day to remember, but not because of the craziness that I found myself in. Not because of the fun we had at softball. Not even because our bush dance was a raging success. It was a day to remember because it was November 11: Remembrance Day. The day when at 11am 105 years ago, the guns were silenced, and the carnage of World War One ended. Ever since that day we have paused to remember the sacrifice of thousands of men and women who gave their lives in theatres of war. While the guns may have stopped on November 11, 1918, warfare did not. Nations continue to rage against nations. Leaders continue to pursue power at any cost. Families continue to be torn apart through war.

Lives continue to be lost through the impacts of war. Even though many believed at the time that the First World War was the war to end all wars, it was only the beginning of what historians regularly refer to as ‘The Bloody 20th Century’. So what are we doing as we remember? What is the importance of remembering? We must remember the cost of freedom. The cost of peace. We must remember the great sacrifices of the thousands who never made it home – so that we could call this place our home. But we remember so we do not repeat. Often the greatest mistake we make is that we do not learn from history. We are certainly seeing this

play out now in both Ukraine and Gaza, but also in the countless other conflicts that go unnoticed by our world. We remember so we do not repeat. But it raises the question for us: will we ever see the end of war? Will we ever see an end to the senseless violence that has plagued our world? There is a beautiful promise the God made in Isaiah 2:4 where he said this: ‘He shall judge between the nations and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.’ How is this even possible? Surely this is just some sort of pipe dream. But here’s the thing.

God never breaks a promise. He has promised to bring peace and peace will come and has already begun to flow and it is all because of the one who is the Prince of Peace, the Lord Jesus. He came to bring an end to the struggle between us and God and the sin and destruction that plagues our world.

And the promise that he made is that he is returning and, when he does, the promise of Isaiah will be fulfilled. It will be a wonderful day. And so we look back and remember the fallen. We look back and remember the sacrifice of others. We look back and remember and learn. But we can also look forward with hope.

THUMBS DOWN To Orange City Council for the free light and sound show held at Robertson Park last Friday night. After the money that was wasted on Lords Place this event can be added to that disaster. Weird music and a couple of coloured floodlights slowly flashing could hardly be called an incredible, unique experience. The money could have been better spent on our potholed roads.

A BIG THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for its desecration of Moulder Creek.

What was once a picturesque scene for adults and a great play area for children, is now nothing more than a large stormwater drain.

A HUGE THUMBS UP to Liz in the photo section of Officeworks. Liz was so helpful and respectful whilst assisting me (an elderly lady) to print out photos for my Christmas cards.

If every retailer in Orange had a “Liz” on board business would be booming. Thank you, your kindness was very much appreciated.

How can a ‘centre of excellence’ with a restaurant, sports fields, function centre, rehoming facilities, pet shop and offices be estimated to cost $15 million, privately funded, but the proposed conservatorium and planetarium cost $18.5 million in ratepayers money on top of government grants and private donations and funding?

I don’t think this passes the ‘pub test’.

I work in a place where I can speak to young people about life and God. It’s a privilege I do not take for granted. I try my best to talk to kids about their situation while also taking that opportunity to point them to Jesus.

Recently while having dinner with friends, we discussed that Christians become so comfortable with our jargon that we inadvertently create a barrier between people and God. We are so used to using words like “grace” and “salvation” that we don’t pause long enough to explain what those words actually mean.

And because of our familiarity with Christian Buzzwords, those who call ourselves believers, become complacent with the terms and phrases and, dare I say, forget the life-changing power those words had on them and, potentially, on you.

So I encourage you, if you know a Christian, get them to explain every buzz word you hear them speak. And not only that, ask them what impact those words, like “grace” and “salvation” had on them. Watch them and listen to them, it could help that person renew their faith… or help you find yours.
