It certainly brought a little excitement to the afternoon festivities, then followed by the tedious matter of contacting insurers and the like. Not the ‘white Christmas’ people dream of!

BULKY WASTE COLLECTION DATES FOR 2024

FoodCare thanks the community for Christmas generosity There was goodwill and food in abundance this past Christmas, with local food relief charity FoodCare Orange overwhelmed with the generosity shown to those less fortunate.

FoodCare, which provides those experiencing financial hardship with a range of fresh and frozen foods, and household items for free or at a discounted rate, relies almost entirely on monetary donations or donations of food and goods to operate.

While the organisation has received strong community support since it was founded a decade ago, the weeks leading up to Christmas saw an incredible increase in donations from individuals, families, schools and workplaces.

“This has been the biggest year for donations in the ten years that FoodCare has been going,” said FoodCare volunteer Anne Hopwood.

Orange residents will have a chance to dispose of unwanted large household items during this year’s bulky waste collection, held from 29 January to 23 February 2024.

All residences in the Orange local government area — which includes Spring Hill, Clifton Grove and Lucknow — can make use of the annual pick-up.

Collection dates will once again be organised along the ‘Week A / Week B’ yellow-bin recycling collection calendar, which is based on residents’ location in relation to Anson Street.

Residents who live west of Anson Street are part of ‘Week A’ and should place their bulky waste out on Sunday, January 28.

“While part of this waste will go to landfill, many of these items are recyclable,” Orange Environmental Sustainability Community Committee Chair, Councillor David Mallard said.

“This process will enable us to keep them out of landfill and made into new products instead, which will maximise the life of these valuable resources and benefit the environment.”

The volume of waste collected from any one property must be less than two cubic metres or about the size of a standard (6’ x 4’) level box trailer.

Residents who live EAST of Anson Street are in ‘Week B’ and should place their bulky waste out on Sunday, February 11.

Items must also be of manageable size for two people to lift, and loose items must be tied securely with rope or string (not wire), into bundles or contained in sturdy boxes.

Residents should have received a mail-out from Council outlining the dates of the collection, how it works, items that will be accepted and materials that will not be collected.

“Individuals, families, schools – Orange High came down, the university, childcare centres, The DPI… all sorts of places have given. They’ve phoned us up and said they are coming with a delivery,” she continued.

“It makes you realise that Orange is a very generous community… people really are thinking about those who just haven’t got enough at this time of year.”

Another boost for the FoodCare coffers came from a partnership with Ashcroft’s Let’s Make Better charity in the lead-up to the festive season.

Ashcroft’s IGA kindly donated a raffle prize of a trolley full of groceries, with all the money raised going to FoodCare to pass on to their clients for Christmas.

Ashcroft’s also collected donations of non-perishable food items in the cages located near the checkouts of both their Orange supermarkets.

“All those boxes over there and more came from Ashcroft’s,” Ann told Orange City Life, who helped publicise the “Food for Christmas” appeal.

“And the money raised from the raffle converted into about, roughly, 260 $25 vouchers, so that was pretty amazing,” Ann said.

“We want to thank the community and the businesses and the schools and everyone who collected food and donated it.”

FoodCare Orange reopened after a short break on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. Located at 142 March Street, FoodCare Orange is open every Tuesday to Friday morning from 10.30am to 1pm and Thursday afternoons from 4.30pm to 6pm.

Meet Orange’s 2024 Australia Day Ambassador Jo Taranto

O

range’s 2024 Australia Day Ambassador Jo Taranto passionately believes in the role grassroots solutions play in strengthening the social and ecological connection of communities.

A Sydney-based sustainability educator and speaker, Jo is a co-founder of the social enterprise consultancy Good for the Hood, an organisation with a mission to create more connected and sustainable communities all over Australia.

She advocates that everyone has a role to play in making their community or organisation a positive force for good.

Jo grew up in the rural NSW town of Tenterfield, the fifth generation to have

lived on her family farm. As a child, Jo lived through the extreme drought of the 1990s and saw the devastation and toll it took on her family and community.

Jo trained as an Occupational Therapist and graduated from the University of Queensland with Honours in 2004. She has worked internationally in mental health, community development and rehabilitation settings.

After completing a Diploma in Health Safety and Environment in 2009, Jo moved into corporate health and safety working for over 10 years with clients like Victoria Police and as the National Safety Manager for a private aged care provider.

It was in 2018 that she co-founded Good for the Hood.

Through her efforts, she has been nominated for Citizen of the Year in her own community of Ryde and won several

Jo has now worked with over 200 organisations and has appeared on national television and media outlets sharing her passion for good citizenship and sustainability. She is also co-host of the Channel 10 television called Planet Shapers, which tells the stories of those who are innovating, adapting, and changing the way we live and work.

Jo says she is eagerly awaiting her role as an Ambassador and getting back to her country roots, when she joins the Orange community on Australia Day. “Growing up in the country and now living in Sydney, I really miss the close-knit of my hometown. Being an Ambassador in the Australia Day program is like a homecoming,” Jo said.

“You are welcomed into the most diverse

and unique places around Australia, only to meet the same thing wherever you go; a deep sense of belonging and a great belief that community is what makes Australia better.”

Orange’s Australia Day activities take place in Cook Park from 8am to 2pm on Friday, January 26, 2024. Celebrations include live music, market stalls, a vintage car show, lawn games and other kids’ activities.

There will also be a citizenship ceremony to welcome new Australians into the community and the presentation of the Australia Day Awards, including Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Group of the Year, Community Event of the Year, Local Legend Award, Business Philanthropy Award, and Environmental Citizen/Group Award.

Development of the Bloomfield Health Precinct Orange City Council wants to know how you would like to see the Bloomfield Health Precinct developed.

Council has engaged consultants EY to prepare a business case to explore ways to unlock the precinct for future development, with a focus on protecting the heritage setting.

The Business Case Project is funded by the NSW Government’s Regional NSW Business Case and Strategy Development Fund.

Old Boys rugby fundraiser looking to add more junior matches to annual Spring Hill carnival

t’s become a much-anticipated part of the local sporting calendar, the annual Old Boys rugby clash at Spring Hill for pride and claim to the ‘Wood Duck trophy.

But this year organisers of the Barry Winnell Give Me Change for Kids Charity Fundraiser are hoping to get more juniors and parents involved in the friendly rugby carnival and ultimately raise even more money to help sick kids.

The annual charity match sees players from the Orange Emulators, Bathurst Old Bulls, and Spring Hill Wood Ducks meet in a friendly clash at the Spring Hill Recreation Ground.

It all came about over a beer at the Spring Hill pub and was the brainchild of the late Barry Winnell. With the passing of Barry in September 2019, the match was renamed in his honour and each year continues to support the Orange Lions Club’s ‘Give Me Change for Kids’ project.

Held in October 2023, the Barry Winnell Charity Fundraiser raised $5150, and for the first time saw junior matches played along with the Old Boys.

Spokesperson for the Orange Lions Club, Grame Eggleston said the club is very grateful to the Orange Emulators and the entire Spring Hill community for their continued support, which allows them to provide equipment for the Children’s Ward at the Orange Hospital.

“The last event in October would not have been possible without the tremendous help and support provided by Tony Benney, the owner of the Spring Hill Railway Hotel, which allowed the community to raise $5,150 towards the Children’s ward,” Graeme said.

Orange Economic Development Community Committee Chair Cr Tony Mileto said it was a complex project dealing with open space, heritage buildings and landscapes, critical services, multiple landowners and users.

“Health is the major driver and the biggest employer in the Orange economy, and we need to make sure we are ready for new opportunities in the future. This is an important precinct. We want to get the balance right between opportunity and locking it away,” Cr Mileto said He said the intended outcomes of the business case are: to remove barriers to prospective development while protecting the future of the heritage setting; co-design a business case that sets out a common vision for future land use; and craft a sustainable future for the Precinct.

Memories by Ned Food Glorious Food

I

n my 95 years I have never qualified as a gastronome. I prefer to eat to live rather than live to eat. (Hang on Ned, I tell myself, this is supposed to be about memories). So here are a few about food...

Travelling towards Rotorua on a clear, crystal morning, the air so clean and crisp as only New Zealand can come up with, Mount Ruapehu white-topped in the distance, we pulled up at a small wayside hotel for a rest. On the menu was mutton sandwich, two generous slices of bread still warm from the oven, buttered, with two liberal slices of New Zealand’s famous lamb with homemade pickles,

along with a mug of local beer.

Another was with a mob of cattle on the road. After watering and settling the mob down on the reserve, taking off the saddle, rubbing down the horse and setting him up with a nosebag of feed, a good hot shower under the bore head, we settled down to a big plate of Cook’s camp oven stew, followed by a generous slice of spotted dog and an enamel mug of strong tea. Then into the swag when the reflected light off the campfire died down, out came Banjo’s “wondrous glory of the everlasting stars”.

When finished, a bowl of scented water and a hand towel complete the experience.

A propos this subject let me tell you of the fish vendor on the harbour selling lobsters, fresh from his big basket, crying,

“Fresh Lobsters, fresh lobsters, they come out of the harbour, walk across the road and into my basket.” A customer picked up one of his lobsters and – instead of the tail snapping back, it was like a wet sock. He sniffed it and handed it back to the vendor.

The vendor sniffed the lobster and said, “Oh dear, that’s terrible, he must have trodden in something!”

As that famous Irish poet said: “Some have meat and cannot eat, some would eat and have no meat, but we have meat and we can eat and so the Lord be Thankie”.

AUSTRALIA DAY PICNIC IN COOK PARK Orange Mayor Jason Hamling invites residents to come along to Cook Park from 8am to 1pm on Friday, 26 January to enjoy Australia Day. Cr Hamling says Australia Day is about celebrating all the things we love about our beautiful country, with the theme ‘Reflect. Respect. Celebrate.’

“I encourage everyone to come together to celebrate the contribution every Australian makes to our nation,” Cr Hamling said.

“It’s a day to reflect on what it means to be an Australian, acknowledge our history, recognise our diversity and celebrate all the people who make our country unique.”

Orange’s 2024 Australia Day Ambassador is Joanne Taranto, a sustainability educator and community advocate, and the director and co-founder of social enterprise consultancy Good for the Hood. An ambassador for three years, she said she enjoyed the opportunity to visit new places.

“Australia Day is one of those days when you can gain a powerful insight into a community, especially through the awards given for volunteering and citizenship, and I hear Orange have a pretty big celebration!” Ms Taranto said.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to meet a few of the residents and take a look at a some of the local sustainability projects.”

The day will start with the traditional community breakfast barbecue, free for the first 600 people, courtesy of the Orange Canobolas Lions Club and Rotary Club of Orange.

I've been diligently training for the Orange Runners Festival and the Volcanic Mountain Challenge, two exciting local sporting events on the horizon here in Orange. It was truly an honour to have the opportunity to participate in the 31st Elvis Festival in Parkes. This world-renowned festival has garnered nearly three-quarters of a billion YouTube hits worldwide, attracting a staggering crowd of close to 25,000 attendees. Beyond the remarkable entertainment, the festival injected millions of dollars into our local economy, proving its significant impact.

The event showcased some of the finest tribute artists from across the globe, delivering exceptional performances. In

Orange Youth Foyer Project I had a productive meeting with the dedicated Uniting Team to delve into the details of the Orange Youth Foyer Project. This vital initiative is a direct response to the pressing issue of youth homelessness in NSW, where a staggering 22% of homeless individuals are children and young people. The primary objective is to offer secure housing and comprehensive support for young individuals between the ages of 16 and 24. Within a mere two years, this initiative has achieved remarkable results, with over 80% of participants successfully transitioning to stable housing, 65% securing gainful employment, and an impressive 60% reduction in their involvement with the justice system. The project's comprehensive approach encompasses wrap-around support services, valuable employment opportunities, and assistance in facilitating a smooth transition to independence, all of which are instrumental in reducing the future risk of homelessness.

addition, I had the privilege of joining forces with the Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Jenny Aitchison MP, to extend a warm welcome to the Elvis Express as it arrived in Orange. The atmosphere was electric, and the festivities were an absolute blast!

I wholeheartedly recommend this unforgettable experience to everyone. Kudos to all the dedicated organisers, generous sponsors, hardworking volunteers, and the Parkes Shire Council for making this event a resounding success.

Aerospace Academy

It was a pleasure to reconnect with Jackie Carpenter and Joanne Sim, who returned to our electorate with their Aerospace Academy during the Summer School Holidays. This exceptional program, designed for students aged 12-15, garnered such overwhelming interest that it was fully booked. The Aerospace Academy provides a unique educational experience for our regional youth, examining the fascinating realms of space, space travel, exploration, and space programs.

This free three-day course not only imparts valuable knowledge but also offers participants a glimpse into the future and the chance to interact with industry professionals, potentially becoming involved in forthcoming projects. The success of this program hinges on the dedication of its volunteers and the support it receives from the NSW Government. I am genuinely impressed by the opportunities it provides to our regional youth, and I wholeheartedly support its continued funding.

Orange Base Hospital Intensive Care Unit: 5/5 stars - A TripAdvisor review

OOOOO To avoid all the stress of Christmas, I hatched the perfect plan and orchestrated a small medical emergency. I did this at the start of week ten, thereby cleverly skipping the last week of school and all associated tantrums from tired children. I was picked up by a lovely ambulance team, spent a few hours in Emergency receiving amazing care, before being transferred to the ICU. Here I began living the best three weeks of my life.

At this point you may be thinking, “Wow, Emily, that seems like a huge overreaction.” To that I ask, “How many school violin concerts did you attend?”

Now, I’ve stayed in some beautiful luxury hotels around the world (pre-kids, obviously), and our bed at home is expensive and lovely. But I have never known comfort like the air mattress in ICU. Add in multiple pillows tucked under legs and arms supporting lines and monitors and equipment, and it’s like sleeping on a cloud. With angels checking on you constantly making sure you’re comfortable and pain-free.

I’ve been out of hospital for 10 days now, and I think about that mattress all the time. My Posturepedic garbage from Harvey Norman isn’t worth the 60-month interest-free payment schedule now I know what real luxury feels like.

And then there’s waking up. The team who worked hard all night long to keep you alive greet you with smiles. I’m sure they were devastatingly tired but not once did anyone yell in my face because they were tired. Such a refreshing break from dealing with kids in the morning.

Next, and wait for it, a wonderful staff member brings you breakfast in bed! Like, not just Mother’s Day, but every day. They wheel around a truly magical trolley filled with whatever delight you’ve chosen, and place it in front of you while smiling. The hot drinks and food are piping hot and the milk, fruit and yoghurt are crisp and cool. Then they offer to help you open things, and no one complains because your breakfast looks better than theirs, and it’s not fair, and nobody eats half your toast, because theirs was cut into the wrong shape.

Afterwards, they simply come and collect your cup/plate and whisk it away.

After breakfast, come the medical rounds. This is where lovely specialists and their team of junior doctors visit and assess your

condition, discuss treatments and generally make excellent decisions so you keep getting better. They listen and care about your feedback, and care for you holistically. This means that I was being treated for breathing problems, but mentioned the anaemia I (and so, so many women my age) have battled for years and, within hours, I was having an iron infusion.

I have to tell you that I was very, very sick, but due to amazing care I survived and my lungs are slowly recovering. But that iron infusion was also a game-changer and for the first time in 14 years I have fingernails and don’t lose handfuls of hair every day.

Then there’s the sheer amount of positive reinforcement that’s sorely lacking from most mums’ everyday lives. Things I was praised for include: breathing on my own, having a normal temperature, standing up, peeing in the toilet, taking my medication and staying still while they inserted another line in my arm. I’m certainly not saying that physiotherapy and rehab is easy, but to hear, “You’re doing such a good job,” every time you take a step will give you a drive to succeed you haven’t felt in years. I’ve mentioned to my family that I’m going to make myself a sticker chart for outpatient rehab. I’m not even joking.

Most importantly, and I need to dedicate an entire paragraph to this, is what happens when you say, “I’m a bit cold.” The lovely nurse stationed in your room with you will duck out quickly and bring you a heated blanket, placing it on your feet first, pulling it all the way up to your chin, then gently tucking you in. Let me tell you, nothing again will ever compare. It’s like being chilly, then just enveloped in warmth and comfort. I’m considering buying a blanket-warmer for home use.

Lastly, I just want to say thank you. I spent 18 days in ICU, almost dying on my third night there. The staff worked around the clock to not only bring me back from that scary brink, but then to make sure I went from in-bed attached to monitors, medication lines and oxygen, to walking out the door and going home to my family less than three weeks later. Special shoutout to everyone who looked after me in that scary first week, and especially Alice who worked all day Monday, stayed up with me all night to make sure I made it through, then worked the next day, too. I wouldn’t be here without you all.

Here’s to an amazing 2024. I’m so ready for it!

Weaving culture celebrated in a new light

Jenni Kemarre Martiniello is an awardwinning glass artist of Aboriginal (Southern Arrernte), Chinese and Anglo-Celtic descent.

Working at the Canberra Glassworks she creates glass forms that reimagine the weave, colours and intricate designs of Aboriginal fish traps, nets, eel traps, dilly bags, tungas (bark baskets) and bicornual baskets.

Orange Regional Gallery was fortunate to acquire one of Jenni’s artworks from her exhibition Confluence at the gallery in 2022. Now on display for the first time in the Collection Highlights exhibition, you can find the delicate bicornual basket-shaped glass form that celebrates the tradition of weaving and reimagines it in a new light.

Working with the tradition of Italian caneworking Jenni adapted the processes and European colour palette to reflect the natural colours of the Australian environment.

Grasses, seaweed, bush flowers, feathers, or pollen on water are recreated with infinite patterns and colours. There are multiple hues within a cane, and each work can be pulled and twisted to refine the patterning and colour.

Working across Australia, Jenni’s work is rich with memories and experiences of the

landscape, with her titles referencing plants and places imbued in the works. Seed & Stamen Bicornual Wattle Seed (2018) evokes the interaction of land and water. Of the inspiration behind the work Jenni states: “When the wind blows the seed and stamen onto the top of water on creeks and rivers, it has a gorgeous patterning when you get close. With the movement of the water the patterns are extraordinary.” Here the artist delights in detail, using the fine details of the bush to reveal a larger picture or memory of place.

The woven vessel is a recurrent form examined in Jenni’s practice, for her the vessels are carriers of culture, place, and her own experience of country. In the glass medium, she continues the practice of weaving, illuminating its rich, intricate patterning. By integrating two different practices in this way she opens endless possibilities for articulating place.

Agapanthus belong to the family of plants called amaryllidaceae. Native to South Africa there are around six known species and many different varieties. The most common

The flowers appear in late spring to mid-summer, and they can flower for up to six weeks. They are super drought-hardy and will tolerate medium frosts.

Once flowering has finished, immediately remove the spent flowers (down to the base of the stem) as they are considered a weed in some areas of New South Wales. All parts of the plant are toxic, especially the rhizome and roots, leaves and sap, so it is advisable to wear gloves when pruning or dividing.

Agapanthus prefer well-drained soil and full sun.

They will tolerate semi-shade but won’t flower as profusely. In the right spot, Agapanthus can live for up to 80 years.

Agapanthus make a great informal hedge, can create contrast in both formal and informal gardens, and grow beautifully in pots. They also make a terrific cut flower.

They benefit from being divided every few years.

Simply take a spade, dig the chosen clump into pieces keeping some rhizome and roots on each new plant. Replant and water well. They are virtually impossible to kill; I’ve been known to take to mine

SUMMER READING

Happy New Year! Welcome back to another year of Life and Times with me. It is a great time of the year.

Everything feels new. Many people are still on the high of summer holidays and basking in the glow of relaxation. I wonder how you have spent your break?

Summer holidays often mean one thing for me: reading. There is something about the long days off that present me with the time that I normally wouldn’t have for working through various books. One of the places we have spent some time during these holidays is at our family’s farm in the Riverina. It’s the sort of place that as soon as I arrive there, I immediately feel relaxed.

One of the reasons for this is that there is no reliable phone service.

It gives me a time of detox from the regular notifications that can cause distractions from what’s in front of me.

And it gives me time to read.

So, what is it that you are reading?

What books have you found yourself getting lost in over these holidays?

Maybe it has been the latest crime novel or an autobiography. Perhaps a classic or a fantasy novel. But if you went searching for a book that you read when you were younger, today, the chances are it would be quite difficult to find. It may even be out of print. If you have just finished a book and were completely captivated by it from page one, but then in twenty years’ time went to find it again in a

shop, would you still be able to find it?

Just because a book makes the New York Times bestseller list does not guarantee its longevity. These books do not last.

I remember reading a book a few years ago by an English philosopher who was proposing a particular approach to life that was taking what he saw as the important elements from the world’s religions yet emptying them of their message. At the time it seemed like an attractive idea yet, within a few years, it has been completely discarded. Books can be like this. Bestsellers can be like this. Popular one day, forgotten the next. But if this is the case, do words stand the test of time?

As a Christian, I believe the answer to that question is yes. At our church, we believe that The Bible is God’s word given to the world so that the world can know who he is. It is these words that will last. In fact, The Bible itself shows that it lasts. It has been read and cherished for centuries. It remains the most widely-read book, most talked about, and the one book that has been banned in over 50 countries.

Why might that be? Because there is something about its message that makes it incredible. Maybe you have read it before, maybe you haven’t. If you haven’t, perhaps you might like to give it a go. There are still a few weeks of summer left. It may be the most surprising book you’ll ever read.

FLOODING IN FORBES IN DAYS GONE PAST While Forbes, like many other centres in inland NSW, is currently battling severe flooding, it is not the first time the town has suffered from heavy rain.

The worst floods in Forbes in recent memory occurred in 1952 when the town was cut in three. This week’s photo shows Forbes in August 1960 when the Lachlan River once again broke its banks and many houses and businesses were inundated.

THUMBS DOWN to the ABC for closing the local radio station for a long period over Christmas/New Year and broadcasting, supposedly all over NSW, from the coast.

Every year this happens, and Bourke residents must put up with the surf conditions up and down the coast, when I think they would prefer the local weather conditions.

They keep saying go to the ABC app for local news, but why not just listen to your local Radio? There are still a large number of people who do not use smartphones or understand them. We all contribute to the running of the ABC. Why not give everybody a chance to always listen to their local radio.

Is good enough good enough?

BY GREG BLANCH How good is good enough? If you are building a house you have to be accurate. Too big a margin for error and there will be problems later on. Modern art has a very large margin for error.

Close enough is good enough. It is the impression that counts.

But what about God? If we haven’t been that bad is that enough to get God’s tick of approval? I think many Australians have this sort of approach to God. If I keep out of trouble, be kind to others…

surely that is enough.

What God expects may surprise you: “Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:28). God’s account of us might also surprise you: “There is no one right with God, not even one.”

(Romans 3:10).

Christianity says we cannot be good enough for God. All other religions say you can do things to make God happy with you… as if he can be bought with good works.

We can do nothing about this situation.

But God has done something. Jesus died to pay the penalty for the way we treat God. This is the heart of the Christian message.
