The 2024 Gnoo Blas Classic, now in its 25th year, gets underway this Friday, February 9, with an expanded three-day program that includes an informal street parade, an even bigger car show, some very special guests and much more for motor enthusiasts of all ages.

The expanded program will get underway at 1pm on Friday, February 9, with an informal street parade along Summer Street and close on Sunday, February 11 with a drive out to Lake Canobolas and lunch at the Waratahs Sports Club.

“This is the first year that we’ve turned it into a threeday event,” said Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club president Wayne Swadling.

“In the past, it has mainly just been the actual car show on Saturday, but this is our 25th anniversary and we are wanting to take it up to the next level.”

Dropping the “Car, Truck and Bike Show” from the name, the club is looking to build the Gnoo Blas Classic into a real destination event for motor enthusiasts, Wayne said.

But as in previous years, the highlight of the weekend will be the Saturday car show held at Sir Jack Brabham Park, the site of the historic Gnoo Blas racing circuit.

“We’ve got a couple of new things happening on the day,” said Wayne. “On the hour, every hour we are doing a bus tour of the race track and going to have Reg Kidd commentating and telling people all about the history of the race track.

“We are expecting 700 cars, trucks and bikes, caravans, boats and whatever!” he said.

“We’ve got Cody Burcher unveiling his new race car… we’re having what we call a ‘Snake Pit’ as I am into Ford Cobras and we have a whole heap of Ford Cobras coming. We’ve got 11 historic police cars coming and another thing is the ‘Lions Den’ celebrating all the Holden history.

“Hopefully we will have 5,000 people through the

On Saturday night, there will be a dinner at the Orange Ex-Services Club where attendees will hear from this year’s special guests: up-and-coming local racer Cody Burcher; motor racing journalist, commentator and writer John Smailes; and longtime Ford fan and motorsport stalwart Dale Sudholz.

But this year the Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club have also decided to pay a special tribute to Australian motor racing legend and Orange’s own, Max Stewart, with the unveiling of a new plaque and presentation to the family.

Considered one of Australia’s leading racing drivers, Max died in a collision during a practice session at Calder Raceway, Melbourne at the age of just 42.

“Our special guest John Smailes, he’s the one who suggested we do something,” explained Wayne.

“When we asked John to be our guest speaker, he mentioned that it would be good to do something on Max Stewart because he’s Orange’s most famous racing driver in terms of what he’s done and what he achieved, so we thought we’d like to pay tribute to Max for what he did in motorsport and get the family up here for the dinner.”

MAX STEWART 1935 – 1977

Born in Orange in 1935, Max began his racing career on motorcycles but soon switched to karts, touring cars and then open wheeler racing cars in Australian Formula II where he was runner-up in 1965 and winner in 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1970.

Max came second to world Champion Jackie Stewart at the 1970 Japanese Grand Prix. In 1972 he won the Singapore Grand Prix and came second in the Macau Grand Prix.

This prompted his move to the ultimate in racing cars – Formula 5000.

In 1973, Max contested the L & M Series in the United States and after six races he was in fourth position overall but had to return home with a fractured wrist.

In 1974 he was placed second outright in the Tasman Series and made history that year by winning five of six rounds in the Gold Star Formula 1 Drivers Championship. He also won the Australian Grand Prix at Oran Park in the Sydney Round of the Gold Star, driving a Lola T330.

In 1975, at Surfers Paradise, he won his second successive Australian Grand Prix in a Lola T400 under the most appalling conditions. The following year in New Zealand he recorded good wins at Levin and Mansfield and also won a round of the Australian Drivers’ Championship at Oran Park.

Unfortunately on March 19, 1977, while practising for a race at Calder Raceway, Melbourne Max was involved in a collision that was to claim his life at the age of 42.

The 2024 Spirek Art Prize calling artists of all levels

T

he Spirek Art Prize is back for 2024!

The annual figurative art competition, coordinated by the Orange

Art Society, is funded thanks to the generous donation of money and art by member Hank Spirek.

Although better-known for his birdlife

artworks, Hank said the human form is his favourite subject matter.

“Figurative drawing has always been important to me,” Hank told Orange City Life when the prize was first announced, “and I had thought for some time to try and find a way to encourage that branch of art… I thought this might stir the Orange art scene up a bit.”

The inaugural prize in 2023 attracted 54 entries, and 2024 is already shaping up to be even bigger.

The prize is open to artists of any level and experience. Entries can be in any medium but must be two-dimensional and an interpretation of the human form.

Works will be judged on Saturday, April 13, by the Orange Regional Art Gallery.

The official opening and announcing of the winner will take place on Sunday, April 14.

Entry costs $20 and there is a $1000 prize pool up for grabs, with first place receiving $750 and second place $250.

Each entry will receive a bottle of wine with a custom label with their entry artwork (18+ yrs only).

Entry forms (available from the Orange Art Society gallery, or contact them by email) and art are to be delivered to the gallery between April 6-12, 2024.

How Dom and Sarah’s wedding plans revived an iconic Orange venue Dom Aboud and Sarah Crowley were simply making plans for their own nuptials; they didn’t think it would lead them to take on one of Orange’s largest wedding venues.

“I’m gonna tell the real story because I don’t want Sarah telling the publicity stunt story,” says Dom Aboud, head chef at Orange’s The Union Bank, the popular local restaurant he and fiance Sarah Crowley have run for the past four years.

Dom and Sarah met while both were working at Sydney’s Rockpool restaurant; Dom a young sous chef and Sarah working front-of-house.

Originally from Sydney, Dom says he always knew he was destined to be a chef. From the time he was eight years old, he’d spend time in his uncle’s restaurant during school holidays, hanging around until finally, his uncle decided he might as well put him to work.

For his 12th birthday, Dom says all he wanted was a Jamie Oliver frypan. And when he got interested in pizza making, his parents had a woodfired oven built.

“Straight away I was just into food,” says Dom. “My family was very

focused on having people over and barbecues and that sort of thing. But I was always pretty confident that I was going to be a chef. It was just a matter of when I was going to be allowed to leave school.”

recalls. “We’d actually got engaged in February… we’d just had our first proper holiday and we were feeling good about the UB and plans for its future and I said, ‘I don’t know how some people do two, one’s more than enough!’”

Two days after he completed his HSC, on Melbourne Cup Day, Dom had a trial shift at the Redoak Boutique Beer Cafe in the Sydney CBD. A few years later, he was working alongside Neil Perry and Corey Costelloe in the Rockpool kitchen.

But as the couple began to discuss plans for their wedding, one point just kept coming up.

“We’d just always be talking about how there weren’t large indoor spaces where you could confidently host large numbers,” Dom said.

“I ended up at Rockpool by a series of really fortunate events, working with Neil and Corey and some really, really great chefs who are now all doing amazing things themselves,” says Dom.

Knowing that there was a gap in the market for a large indoor venue, Dom and Sarah had previously toyed with the idea of setting themselves up to cater at a winery or other suitable sites, but then the idea of Turner’s Vineyard Function Centre came up.

“So I was really lucky to be there at that time and meet Sarah most importantly, which led me to Orange.”

Born in Orange, Sarah left after school for an overseas adventure, returning to Sydney and working bar and front of house at venues around Sydney.

But then in 2019, Dom was offered the head chef position at Orange’s The Union Bank. It was an that neither had expected.

“I was not ready to leave Sydney,” says Dom. “Peak career. I was really content with where I was at Rockpool. The team was awesome. I was a sous chef, working the grill. It was fun, I was learning heaps… to be offered to move to Orange and sort of probably five years before we ever expected to even consider something like that.”

“But here we are,” says Sarah. “We were only both 25, 26 and thrown into pretty massive roles… So we opened up here in August 2019 and six months, pretty much to the day that we opened we closed.”

The Covid lockdowns of 2020 were hard on such a new business, but Dom and Sarah found their forced closures to have a silver lining.

“We’ve never had a normal year, which I think is maybe a blessing in disguise for us,” explains Sarah.

“Because we never had a norm, we have transformed ourselves over and over again and Covid gave us that opportunity too really…

“We were run down from six months of opening a brand new business, working seven days a week, stupid hours… Covid forced us to really stand back and look at what’s working and what’s not.”

The large prominent function centre on the eastern entry to Orange had sat largely unused for years, but when Dom and Sarah stepped inside, he says they knew it was an opportunity they didn’t want to miss.

“The first day we walked through it. I just followed you around going, ‘It’s just been sitting here?’” says Dom. “All those big high arches looking out at all those beautiful pines and when everything is in full bloom and lush, it’s such a gorgeous setting and it’s just been sitting here waiting for someone!”

While Dom and Sarah both saw the potential of the site, he said there was a conversation they had to have first.

“I said, we can’t have a wedding and a wedding venue in the same year, so what do you want to do here? And without blinking, she said, ‘Wedding venue!’ Straight off the bat We’re doing this. So Sarah was a real driving force into starting the conversation and reaching out to see if it was a possibility.”

“Funnily enough to get out of survival mode,” adds Dom, who says it was only this time last year that they were starting to feel things had returned to normal.

Just a few short months later, in September 2023, Banksia Orange was officially launched and the response has proven their faith in taking on a large function venue, with a lot of corporate interest and growing inquiries for weddings

CADIA GOLD COINS RAISE $125K FOR LOCAL CHARITIES AND ORGANISATIONS

L

ocal charities and not-for-profit organisations across Blayney, Cabonne, and Orange have shared in over $125,000 raised from the auction of limited edition one-ounce coins made from gold mined at Newmont Cadia (Cadia).

The coins were commissioned as part of Cadia’s 25year celebrations and feature a Caterpillar 793C haul truck representing open-cut mining at Cadia Hill and an underground loader representing underground mining at Ridgeway and Cadia East, with the added design features of the stockpile and conveyors representing the processing of gold and other metals at the site since 1998.

Forty local charities and not-for-profit organisations were selected to auction the coins, with 37 of the coins going up for auction via Macquarie Auction Group in

December. The coins were auctioned commission-free with 100% of the purchase price from the auction going to the organisations. The remaining three coins will be auctioned directly by Housing Plus, Ronald McDonald House Charities Central West and the Torie Finnane Foundation at their annual fundraising events later this year.

Cadia General Manager Tom Lukeman said it was fabulous to see the interest in the coins and the impact the donations will have on the local region.

“Auctioning the coins was a unique way to involve the whole community in our 25-year celebrations and secure their own piece of Cadia history.

“We are proud of our history in the Cadia District and this was a great way to continue to support many of the valuable charities and not-for-profit organisations in the

region,” Tom said.

Cancer Care Western NSW Fundraising Coordinator, Jan Savage, said the $3,500 raised from their coin will be put to good use.

“Cadia has been a long-term donor since 2009 to Cancer Care Western NSW, supporting the build and upgrades to the valuable cancer support service. With a medical service catchment area of close to 300,000 people in regional, and Western NSW, the donation of funds from the gold coin auction, generated valuable funds to support our room upgrades.

“This recent support from the gold coin auction has arrived at a much-valued time, generating so much interest and excitement, with our regional guests set to enjoy the benefits of the vital and necessary upgrades,” Jan said.

Psalm 90:12 says: ‘Teach us to number our days right, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.’ Every day is a gift from God and we can use it wisely by living according to his ways or accept a watereddown gospel which will become a way of life that will lead to eternal destruction. As we embark on another year, may we use our days to get to know the God of The Bible and grow in his grace.

STORM AND FLOOD INSURANCE INQUIRY KICKS OFF

T

he experiences of storm and flood-hit residents, largely left high and dry by their insurers, are being shared at a parliamentary inquiry which will examine the response of insurers following the 2022 floods.

I fiercely advocated for the establishment of the probe, asking the Prime Minister in Question Time in May 2023 whether he would support an inquiry.

Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones travelled to our region to announce the inquiry at Eugowra in July 2023.

In the fourteen months since this disaster hit our region, we have heard many stories of heartache and heartbreak from local residents and business people who have had their homes and livelihoods destroyed.

Communities like Eugowra, Molong, Manildra, Canowindra, Cudal and Wellington were devastated by the storm and flood event of November 2022.

The rebuilding and recovery process has been made much harder by the cold-hearted and in some cases shocking response of insurers to policyholders.

At the end of the day, if a policy holder wants to fight a knockback from an insurer, they’re going to need to fork out big dollars for an expert hydrology report, a building report, and also a solicitor. If you’ve lost everything or your business is in ruins, there is just no prospect of fighting back.

I’m hoping this probe will be a turning point in the way that insurers deal with disaster-hit policy holders and that positive change can occur from the suffering and heartache that our residents have had to endure.

I am expecting the inquiry to visit the Central West in the near future to hear firsthand from our residents.

TRANSPARENCY NEEDED ON DISASTER FUNDING

I

t was positive to see Premier Chris Minns visit Eugowra for the first time recently.

While visits like this are important, the reality is that it should have taken place much earlier.

Both the state and federal governments have committed $50 million dollars to disaster relief for our region. The $50 million dollar federal commitment came after lots of agitation and lobbying by me in Canberra. When the funding was announced I was assured that we would have clarity on how the money would be spent by the beginning of February. Unfortunately, the money still hasn’t been rolled out.

There needs to be transparency on how this money is spent and also community input. The reality is the roll-out of the funding is taking

uring the hearings so far, some damning evidence has been heard about the unscrupulous behaviour of insurance companies.

Vicki Stay from Financial Counselling Australia spoke of policy holders being “coerced, gaslit and ghosted” by insurance companies.

Laura Powell from Anglicare said of insurers, “I will say they do lie.”

The evidence from Financial Counselling Victoria was of “very vindictive behaviour” by insurers including threats.

On Monday, I questioned Suncorp chief executive Steve Johnston about the case of a couple in Eugowra who were forced to live in a caravan for months while they faced a litany of delays. I said: “They’re customers of yours … why did it have it

way too long. It seems to be tied up in red tape rather than hitting the ground. We need action.

We also need progress on better early warning systems and fixing the state and local government infrastructure that made the flooding much worse. The old rail line at Canowindra and Molong rail bridge still haven’t been sorted.

Local residents and business owners are also reporting that the Molong town drainage is still backing up with water in heavy rain. The feedback that I’ve had from the community is that information is needed on the state of the drains and how they will be fixed.

With council elections just around the corner, interest in these issues will no doubt be high.

n October 2021, we announced $1.1 million in funding for the Bank Street streetscape upgrade through the Building Better Regions program.

The work is now being carried out, which has meant that sections of Bank Street are currently closed.

Tree poisoners in Council’s sights

O

range City Council is installing signage to highlight tree poisoning on community land in the hope that it will prompt witnesses to come forward.

In the past 12 months, Council estimates eight trees have been deliberately poisoned or damaged, a plane tree in McLachlan Street; a liquidambar in Spring Street; and two eucalyptus trees in Somerset Park.

The two eucalyptus trees in Somerset Park died late last year and were found to have been deliberately poisoned.

Orange City Council’s Environmental Sustainability Committee Chair, Cr David Mallard was saddened to hear about the poisoned trees.

“Orange’s street and park trees are loved and treasured by the vast majority of local residents, and that’s why the actions of a few are so shocking,” Cr Mallard said.

The signs, which will be displayed on the poisoned trees until they are removed, state: “The tree on this site belonged to the Orange community. It has been deliberately poisoned by persons unknown. Trees contribute character to the neighbourhood and provide habitat for wildlife. If you have information about the poisoning of this tree that would assist with a successful prosecution, please contact Orange City

Council says that while there is clear evidence from holes drilled into the trunk that the trees have been poisoned, it’s very difficult to find out who did it. They hope the signs may prompt a neighbour or someone walking past who may have seen some suspicious activity.

“Installing the sign makes it clear that the broader community is unhappy with what’s happened,” Cr Mallard said.

“It might make someone think twice before they do this again to realise they’re so out of step with community standards.”

Blooming beauties: Crepe Myrtle

L

agerstroemia indica or Crepe Myrtle is a mediumsized deciduous tree from the family of plants Lythraceae and is native to the Indian subcontinent, although it has been suggested that they originally came from China where they were known as ‘Monkey Tree’ as monkeys found them difficult to climb because of the smooth bark. There is one Australian native, found mainly in northern Australia, called Lagerstroemia archeriana.

The tree is multi-branched but can be pruned to a single branch if desired. It develops delightful panicles of crepelike flowers (hence the common name) which appear in late summer and are long-lasting. Colours extend from white, pinks, through to deep magenta and

crimson. Take a drive around Orange now as they are everywhere and are quite the showstoppers.

The tree can grow to around 10-15m (so give it space) but is often hard-pruned to keep it to a shrub. If left to its own devices it has a looser shape and develops beautiful mottled bark which can be spectacular in winter. It prefers full sun and free-draining soil. They benefit from an annual feed of fertiliser, manure or compost. Whilst fully hardy, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew if conditions are too moist or humid, so apply a fungicide if needed.

In autumn the leaves turn to yellow or orange, and fall from the tree. It can be propagated in winter by taking hardwood cuttings.

They will attract bees and birds to your garden and make a lovely cut flower.

‘Orange and Beyond’: a joint exhibition by Wanda Driscoll and Bronwyn Vaughan

T

he Orange Art Society is proud to announce their latest featured artist exhibition ‘Orange and Beyond’.

‘Orange and Beyond’ is a joint exhibition by wellknown and widely exhibited

artist Wanda Driscoll, who has teamed up with Bronwyn Vaughan to showcase their skills and approaches to art.

Wanda has been an exhibiting artist since 1991

and her works have received many awards at many art exhibitions and shows.

using vivid colour, and a mix of soft and bold strokes to create drama and depth in her work.

Wanda paints traditional and contemporary artworks in oils, watercolours, acrylics and mixed media. She continually travels Australia looking for ideas, new subjects and new scenery to capture on paper and canvas.

Themes she loves to explore include landscapes from her travels, flowers, fruit and figures.

Wanda will be in the gallery most weekends during the exhibition to chat about her art and demonstrate her skills.

Come meet the artists this Saturday, February 10, from 10am.

Bronwyn loves to paint in impressionism, expressionism and expressionism-abstract styles,

‘Orange and Beyond’ will be on display until March 8, 2024.

Sophie was named one of the top five live instrumentalists of the year at the National Live Music Awards and has been twice nominated for the Australian Music Prize. Her music has received glowing praise from numerous media outlets including The Guardian, Wonderland, and MOJO, who described it as “stirring, vigorous, grandly melodic.”

Sought after as a composer and pianist, Sophie has been involved with a number of films (most recently Baby Teeth and True Spirit), toured internationally through Japan and Europe, and opened for artists such as Olafur Arnalds, Hauschka, Federico Albanese and Lambert.

On Saturday, February 24, Orange audiences will be treated to one of just three local performances, before Sophie heads once more to Europe where she is touring her latest album, ‘A World Outside’.

My First Day at School!

It has been a big week for many parents (and no doubt a few tears shed) as their little ones took their first steps through the school gate. We wish them all the best as they embark on their education journey!

The first week back Miss Nine’s first morning back starts with her tipping her painstakingly packed Instagram-worthy bento box upside down while trying to assess whether my snack game is up to scratch. (It isn’t?) If anyone knows how to get passionfruit yoghurt out of a bright red carpet, please feel free to write in. Lunch is soon repacked, and the offending carrot sticks are replaced with pizza shapes as Miss Nine glares at me with disappointment.

And then, she is off.

I turn to Miss 15 and ask her what she wants to do with our incredibly rare day alone together. She informs me I’ll spend it doing what I do best: chauffeuring her around to various social engagements with her friends.

As all parents of teens can attest, this is known as “quality time” together.

A miracle occurs at school pick-up time, when Miss Nine appears wearing the hat she went to school in.

Zero hats lost this year so far! However, she informs me her (metal) teaspoon went in the playground bin along with her yoghurt tub. I sent a quick message to the school asking them to consider installing metal detectors on the bin lids as a preventative measure. I’m yet to hear back.

Terror fills my heart as she explains her day started with the common snitching activity: the “What I did in the holidays” writing exercise, but she assures me she didn’t include anything bad. I panic mildly as I find out she has her kindergarten teacher again, because she was in kindy in 2020 and we all remember how much of a $&#!show that year was, but I also recall how beautiful she is and decide it’s going to be a great year.

I order takeaway and call it a week.

On the weekend we decided to attempt to beat the heat. I started by taking Miss 15 hostage and torturing her with a trip to the aquatic centre. Why is this torture?

Because it’s Miss Nine’s favourite thing to do, so the ‘Law of Siblings’ means the other has to hate it.

Still, it’s hot and the water is so refreshingly cool she stops complaining halfway through. I announce I’m doing some laps, so they decide to play “water tip”.

This appears to be a thinly veiled attempt to drown each other and win Only-Child status, while violently splashing everyone else in the 25m pool. If this was you, I’m sorry. I let it happen so I could finish my freestyle.

Sunday was insanely hot and I seem to have some kind of heat-related brain snap, because I announced we are going to the lake. Why is this bad? Because it turns out the entire population of Orange had the same idea. Hubby spots a workmate in the crowd and we very quickly realise how bad we’ve become at parenting, as he spent his whole time in the water within arm’s reach of his child. At that point it was so hot we were watching Miss Nine swim from the airconditioned car, with no idea where Miss 15 was. A quick text reveals she’s walking around the lake, and hubby reassures me it’s not that we’re bad parents, it’s just that his workmate is a first-time parent. He reminds me we could always get out and swim with Miss Nine, and we both laugh hysterically at how funny we are.

The general assumption is that if you are between the ages of 18 and 67, you will be working or at least training or upskilling in order to begin work. But why do we work? Why is such a large part of our lives defined by what we do between the hours of 9-5, five days a week? Is it really just so that we have something to fill our days and money to put food on our tables and a roof over our head… and hopefully a bit extra to have some fun on the weekend?

When someone reaches the end of their careers and enters into retirement, there can be a sense

of having lost a significant part of what defined you as a person and where you found your worth and meaning. But is there more to it than this? Is there more to our lives than simply working lots so that we can enjoy a few years at the end in retirement? There must be something more than this.

The worldview of the Christian offers a far more satisfying answer to how we approach life and especially work. For if you see that each day is a gift, and that the skills and opportunities your work brings you are seen as a way in which you can bring good to others, this radically changes the way you view your work. To think about the way in which your work helps others by offering solutions to problems, enables lives to be able to function better, brings healing to brokenness, fights for the cause of justice, teaching young minds to navigate the world, clearing spaces to help others, investing in your children, providing food – whatever it may be, our work is valuable.

So much of what I do is shaped by these words from The Bible: ‘And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.’

(Colossians 3:17). All I am and all I do is based on what someone else, Jesus Christ, has done for me. I am thankful for the work I can do. I love my job. I hope you do, too.

Golden Memories hosting Millthorpe’s February 13, “Pancake Tuesday” event Milthorpe’s famous “Pancake Tuesday” event — being held next week, February 13 — has had a change of venue for 2024.

The fun social get-together has this year been moved to the village’s Golden Memories Museum at 37 Park Street from 6pm, and everyone is invited to come along.

Pancake Tuesday, also known as “Shrove Tuesday”, is a traditional Christian celebration marking the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday, the six weeks leading up to Easter in the Church calendar.

As Lent commemorates the 40 days and nights of Christ’s fasting in the desert, many Christians typically forgo indulgences in their life; meat, alcohol, chocolate, coffee, or even the internet,

during this time.

Pancake Tuesday — called Carnival (Latin for “remove meat”) and Mardi Gras (French: “fat Tuesday”) in Mediterranean and South American countries — is therefore the feast before the famine, where families would banquet on leftover meats, sweets, and rich foods, before a period of Lenten self-denial.

Pancakes at Tuesday’s event are being cooked by volunteers from the local churches for the celebration, with attendees usually bringing along some sweet or savoury filling, salad or dessert, for the banquet; though you’re welcome to just bring yourself.

The Newbridge Swap Meet is back!

The popular swap meet had been running for well over 20 years (with a short break due to building work and then COVID-19) but the swap meet is back with a refreshed organising committee and a great sense of anticipation for what Sunday, February 18 will bring.

A swap meet is one of the easiest ways to convert into cash those treasures you’ve cleared out of the shed over the holidays. It’s also a great family day out finding treasures of your own. Stories of Newbridge Swap Meet finds are legendary, none more so than the vintage Indian motorcycle that was hauled out of a farm shed only to spark a bidding war on the day!

No need to book. Stallholders can enter from 6am and selling begins at 7am. Entry fee is $25 for stallholders – which includes a lucky door prize - and $5 for visitors ($10 per family). Parking at the showground. Stop by Stringybark Craft and Collectibles, the Olde Bridge Gallery and the Gladstone Hotel while you’re in the village.

The Blayney Book Fair and Trading Table will be held on April 3–4 and April 26–27 in the Anglican Hall, Adelaide Street Blayney.

People wishing to donate books in good condition can leave them in the porch of the hall. Any queries please call Elizabeth Russ on 0408 682 122.

The Book Fair and Trading Table has become very well known in the district and people travel from far and wide to look for their favourite authors or buy plants or jams and relishes. Please don’t donate encyclopaedias because in the day of the internet they don’t sell.

Likewise, magazines are not wanted.

Orange City Christian Men’s Breakfast Group This burgeoning men’s breakfast group is now in its second year of meeting at the Duntryleague Golf Club. It is held on the third Saturday of the month and is a great start to the day. The gatherings offer a great chance for men of all ages from the Orange District to come together in fellowship, in a great location, have some fun, and hear about the Christian life journey of guest speakers.

Attendees find that the gatherings are a good place for men to meet and chat with others. Some 50 to 60 men turn up at each event. Part of the ethos of the group is to help others in the community, and last year the group contributed a donation to a local family faced with significant medical costs in Sydney for their child.

Come along to the next Orange City Christian Men’s Breakfast Group on Saturday, February 17 at Duntryleague Golf Club, Rowan St, Orange.

JACK JAEGER: MAYOR AND SHOPKEEPER Jack Jaeger was a man of many talents. He was a mail contractor between Orange, Lucknow and Shadforth, carrying mail and passengers for 20 years. Later he ran a grocery store in Churchill Avenue. He was patron of Orange Rugby League and he was on the Orange Base Hospital board for many years. But Jack is best remembered as a popular Mayor of Orange from 1945-47 and 1951-53. He is pictured here at his shop, serving young customers just before his retirement in 1963
