Orange’s Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival gets underway this Saturday with a very special 160th birthday bash for Australia’s favourite bush poet, who was born on February 17, 1864. Speaking with keen Banjo enthusiast Elizabeth Griffin, she tells us that they are planning a few extra things to celebrate the big occasion. There’s going to be games, a merry-goround, live music and some of Australia’s best bush poets. It all takes place at Banjo Paterson Park on Ophir Road from 11.30am to 3pm.

Jumping on Trove, I discovered that there is another notable anniversary for Orange this month as it is 100 years since the official opening of the city’s first swimming pool. Located at the corner of Peisley and Byng Streets, the pool was overwhelmingly popular with locals and even frigid temperatures didn’t stop hundreds from getting in the water after Mayor Colvin (who was wearing an overcoat!) declared it open. You can read more on page 4.

Orange and other Central West councils are looking into an idea to tackle housing shortages for new workers by asking whether locals would be willing to rent out spare rooms. Over the next couple of weeks, shoppers will be surveyed to see what it would take to get them to let out a room. There are apparently successful international examples of similar schemes, like in the UK where there are tax incentives, but it will be interesting to see if it would work locally. What would it take for you to rent out a spare room if you are not already doing so?

100 years of public pools in Orange

ne hundred years ago this month on Saturday, February 25, 1924 popular Orange Mayor Dr Arthur Colvin officially opened our city’s first public swimming baths in front of a crowd of 2000 people.

Located at the corner of Peisley and Byng Streets, near the old electric power works, the pool was 33 yards long and “situated in park-like surroundings which are laid out in garden plots and ornamental trees.”

The large number of people who attended the opening was a reflection of just how popular the decision to build a pool was. In fact, the week prior to the official opening the Orange Leader opined: “It is probable that nothing will do more towards popularising — not to say immortalising — Dr Colvin’s term as

Given the weather, the “ever tactful and thoughtful” Dr Colvin kept his remarks brief, before introducing visiting members of the Royal Live Saving Society who gave a practical (and also brief) demonstration to the assembled crowd.

The first official plunge into the pool was also by a visitor, a Miss Thompson of Coffs Harbour, described as an expert swimmer. “...her graceful and perfect work won the keenest admiration of the onlookers.”

With the formalities done, the Mayor informed the eagerly waiting children that the pool was now open and “they indulged to their hearts’ content.”

Work is well underway on the project, which will feature a 30-metre by 17-metre fenced multipurpose court, with facilities to play basketball, futsal, cricket and other activities. The court is surrounded by a two-metre tall fence at the sides and a three-metre tall fence at the ends.

The new court replaces one of the old netball courts on the Anson Street side of Moulder Park that haven’t been used since netball moved to the Anzac Park sports complex.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said enclosed courts like this are used in cities all around the world and he is pleased to see work underway.

“They’re a great option for people who want to have a

Speaking to media from the court on Thursday, February 8, Orange City Council Sport and Recreation Committee Chair Cr Tammy Greenhalgh said the new facility will complement the existing sport infrastructure in Orange.

“Rather than for serious sport, this court is going to be a place to play games just for the fun of it,” Cr Greenhalgh said. “I also think we’re going to see a lot of sporting groups, during winter, come down and use the facility.”

At each end of the enclosed court, there are basketball rings and, below, futsal goals built into the fence. For cricket, there are fence panels marked with wickets.

“It’s going to be used for such a wide variety of sports and it can be multi-use,” Cr Greenhalgh said. “I think it’s great for parents as well because there’s no danger that children are going to run out and get injured trying to get a ball or something.”

At their December meeting, council resolved to name the new enclosed sports court in honour of the late Bob Russell, who was a big contributor to many local sporting organisations through his long-running sporting goods store in Summer Street.

“It was supported unanimously, I believe, from all of council,” Cr Greenhalgh said. “Bob Russell was so supportive in our community and supported a lot of sports over his years in the sports store.”

Weather permitting, council says the new court will be completed by the end of March.

The project was funded by: $105,397 from the Australian Government’s Local Roads, Community and Infrastructure program, and $175,000 from Orange City Council.

Why was Banjo born at Narrambla and not his parents’ home at Buckinbah

Emily was concerned about the remoteness of Buckinbah and the lack of medical assistance, particularly for an 18-year-old having her first baby. So she wrote to her sister Rose Templer, asking if her daughter could have the delivery of her first child at their home.

Rose in a buggy over rough dirt and gravel roads in the heat of February. They stayed overnight with their friend John Smith at Gamboola just out of Molong.

From all accounts, the birth was uncomplicated. A few days later Andrew’s father rode into Orange and registered the birth of “Baby Paterson.” On 11 March the local Anglican priest, Reverend Robert Mayne baptised Andrew at ...Narrambla was Narrambla. a property of 1,920

It was some 80 years later that Richard Sheraton, the clerk at the Orange Court House, noticed the entry of “Baby Paterson” in the records of the birth registry.

He thought that the date was “about right,” so he sought out the records at the local church, Holy Trinity in Byng Street, to find that the baptism record was indeed that of Andrew Barton Paterson. These records are available on display in the church. Mr Sheraton then contacted the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages about his find and the records were corrected.

ndrew Barton Paterson was born on 17 February 1864 at Narrambla near Orange, a fact that can be found in most books and internet sites.

The story begins with the marriage of his parents, Andrew Bogle Paterson and Rose Isabella Barton, in April 1863 at Rose’s home, Boree Nyrang near Molong. It was here that the newlyweds lived and worked hard on their property despite the isolation from other people.

his Saturday is the 160th birthday of Australia’s favourite poet and everyone’s invited!

It was on February 17, 1864, that Andrew Barton Paterson, better known to all as “Banjo” was born on the property “Narrambla” to the north of Orange.

A poet, journalist, author, and war correspondent, Banjo’s pen produced some of the most recognisable poems and ballads in Australia, such as “Clancy of the Overflow”, “The Man from Snowy River” and “Waltzing Matilda.”

To celebrate the 160th anniversary of his birth the Friends of the Banjo Paterson Park are planning a big birthday this Saturday.

Banjo’s 160th Birthday Party will be held, appropriately, at the site of the old “Narrambla” homestead on Ophir Road, now known as Banjo Paterson Park.

“We’ve got a birthday cake, of course, and I’ve organised for a couple of past Australian bush poetry champions to to be involved in the way of Robyn Sykes and Greg North.

“The Canobolas Pipe Band will be coming out to play for us… and we’ve got some games organised and we’re trying to get the kids interested which is why we’ve got a merry-go-round and a miniature train that will be giving free rides for the kids — it should be a bit of fun.”

The celebrations will get underway from 11.30am on Saturday, with people invited to bring out a picnic or purchase a bite to eat from the barbecue.

“We’ll be starting the barbecues at 11.30 and and we’ll be having games for the kids and then the band will be coming on at 1.30pm,” says Elizabeth. “At 2pm we will be having the poets and then the cutting of the birthday cake,” she continues, adding that she is hoping to have descendants of Banjo there for the special occasion.

On Saturday night, Molong Freemasons Hotel is hosting their annual Molong Poetry Brawl, The event sees contestants perform a one-minute original poem that contains the phrase “of course there isn’t much to see.”

While Banjo’s birthday has been a key event of the festival program since it began ten years ago (on Banjo’s 150th birthday), Elizabeth has been involved in annual celebrations for the poet’s birthday since the 1990s.

“I’ve been doing it since ‘94,” says Elizabeth, who is keen to see the memory of Orange’s own bush poet kept alive.

Judged by award-winning bush poet Robyn Sykes there is good prize money on offer.

“Well, he is one of many, many poets and writers to come from Orange, but we just want to honour him and recognise him as one of our own… just recognise the fact that he is an Orange boy, born here on ‘Narrambla’.”

Then on Sunday, the festivities head to Yeoval for the Poets’ brunch and entertainment at the Banjo Paterson – More than a Poet Museum. Along with plenty of poetry and music, this year’s event will include the launch of a new book, Poets, Painters and Pioneers: The Remarkable Family of Banjo Paterson by Heather Knight. It all gets underway at 10am.

A variation to Cadia’s Environment Protection Licence will be required as well as a new mining lease for the new CCOP areas, in addition to the current mining leases that cover the existing mining operations.

The approval applications will be accompanied by a detailed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which will include comprehensive assessments identifying the potential environmental, social and economic impacts of CCOP and how best to manage these.

Is now a good time to invest?

Apart from the age-old question about whether people should buy property or shares, ‘Is now a good time to invest?’ is the other classic question I hear.

The answer is pretty simple… the best time to invest is when you have the money.

Waiting for the right time to invest means bringing emotion into the equation. There is always a reason not to invest.

Just think about all the things that happen around the world that cause economic or market downturns (or both) and how EVERY time they have been short-term anomalies before things move forward and hit record new highs.

So, when to invest is not really the question people need to answer. The better question is ‘Should I be investing?’

Most people want to jump straight to investing before they put in place the safety measures to do so. Just like everything done well in life, solid preparation pays off.

It’s not time to invest if you still have debt besides the mortgage, for example credit card debt, personal loans, car loans, Afterpay debt, etc. These should be paid off before investing.

It’s not time to invest if you haven’t yet built up some rainy day money, preferably three months of living expenses.

Once these savings are built up, it kills two birds with one stone – you can save money on a regular basis, which can then be invested, but also have money to fall back on so that investments don’t have to be raided and the strategy derailed should some money be needed for an unexpected expense.

Once you’re ready to invest, then it’s a matter of what strategy to employ… invest the money you have to invest all at once or stagger it out with regular investments over a period of time. Both have pros and cons and in many ways the choice comes down to how nervous you are about investing. If it scares you, it might be better to drip feed the money into investments.

Then the question becomes what to invest in. That is a conversation better left to have with you when you’re ready.

In my experience, everyone has feelings about investments based on past experiences, upbringing, where they get their information from and the stories they hear. Each, all, or a combination of these, can lead to people being misinformed.

Not enough signs?

Do we need to do more to make drivers aware of the lowered speed limit in the CBD?

Since December 1, 2023, speed limits in the Orange CBD area bounded by Peisley, Kite, Hill, and Byng streets were reduced from 50km/h to 40 km/h, a move designed to improve pedestrian safety.

Despite new signage being installed at the 14 entrances to what’s being called a High Pedestrian Activity Area, and elsewhere in between, Orange City Life has come across several complaints about the lack of visible signage.

Doing a brief investigation last week, we found it difficult to imagine how a driver could be unaware of the change in speed limit. There are multiple signs at each entry point along with the speed limit painted in large lettering on the road surface, which has also been coloured and textured so drivers feel a small vibration as they drive over it.

A suggestion in our ‘Thumbs’ section this week is to have illuminated signs at every appropriate intersection. Is that really necessary?

Querying Orange City Council, we were told that all the new signage was installed as per Transport for NSW guidelines.

Untangling Assets - what needs to be done when everything is in joint names?

Separating from a spouse can be emotionally taxing, but untangling joint assets doesn't have to be daunting. If the majority of assets are in joint names, there are crucial steps to take to ensure a smooth process.

During property settlement negotiations, consider factors such as the value of assets, any outstanding debts, future financial needs, and tax implications. Be prepared to compromise and prioritise reaching a resolution that enables both parties to move forward with their lives.

Finally, once an agreement is reached, we suggest documenting it formally to ensure that it is binding on both parties, it finalises your property settlement and can involve stamp duty exemptions.

Navigating property division after separation can be complex, but with careful planning, informed decision-making, and professional guidance, you can untangle assets and move towards a brighter future.

Edible blooms for every palate

Ornamental: The flower taste varies to the plant itself and generally only the flower itself is edible. Roses (and hips), Day Lilies, Marigolds, English Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia), Hibiscus, Borage, Carnations (pinks) and culinary Sages are a few good examples. Zucchini and pumpkin flowers also fall into this category.

Herbal: the flower generally tastes the same as the plant. Basil, Rosemary, Thyme, Coriander, Parsley, Tarragon, Nasturtium, Rocket, Chives, Dandelions, Dill, Violas and Pansies, Marjoram and Oregano are common examples.

If you, the adult, are in any way unsure, don’t eat it. For example, not all lavenders or sages are culinary. Some plants have flowers that are edible but their seeds, roots, leaves are toxic and so on. Always check with someone in the know.

Further, always check whether the plants have been exposed to herbicides or pesticides. If they have, don’t eat until the chemical’s withholding period has concluded.

Nasturtium, Marigold and Quinoa Salad (serves 4) Into a large salad bowl put some cooked (and cooled) Quinoa (about a cup’s worth).

Mix through some toasted pumpkin seeds, some roughly chopped Persian feta, a small handful of rocket leaves, some roughly chopped cooked butternut pumpkin (optional), a small handful of chopped mint and a handful of currants or sultanas. Sprinkle with nasturtium and marigold flowers. A simple dressing of red wine vinegar, finely chopped ecshallots , sugar and EVOO is optional (but delicious).

If you don’t like quinoa, substitute with cooked cubes of potato and add in a little mayonnaise.

Edible flowers have been used for centuries across many cultures in a multitude of cuisines and for a variety of reasons. Recently, they have become the go-to garnish in restaurants and cafes across NSW and there’s good reason.

Edible flowers are nutritional powerhouses; crammed full of vitamins, minerals, folate and phytonutrients. They also look so very beautiful when added to the plate. There are two main types of edible flowers:

4. Kids (and fussy adults) are more likely to be adventurous with food (especially salads, soups, frittatas, quiches and casseroles) if you make the meal look funky and attractive using flowers. For example, if you give a child a bowl of steamed broccolini that is flowering, drizzled with a little oil or a good knob of butter and topped with toasted flaked almonds, I guarantee they’ll be tempted to give it a go.

5. Flowers lift the spirit. Adding them to the meals you prepare (particularly for children) is like giving them sunshine and happiness on a plate.

It is VITAL to teach children early on what is edible and what is not. Simply put; kids should always check with an adult before

Aptly named, these flowers taste a little like pineapple. You can add a drizzle of honey, a small crack of black pepper and a grate of nutmeg if you wish.

Rosemary Skewers (serves 4) Take 8 large branches of flowering rosemary (about 15-20cm long). Wash gently and pat dry. Strip off all the leaves, except for the top 2-3cm. (Keep the leaves you have removed). Set your new skewers aside in a bowl of warm water to soften the wood. This makes them more pliable.

Chop some red, yellow, or orange capsicum, onion, pineapple, Haloumi cheese and lamb backstrap (or rump steak) into bite-sized pieces and thread onto your skewers, alternating each of the ingredients. Drizzle with EVOO, sprinkle with the rosemary leaves you have saved, a crack of salt and pepper and grill on the BBQ until cooked to your liking. Serve with a green salad, sprinkled with violas, nasturtium and marigolds.

recently introduced my very first Private Member’s Bill to Parliament. Independents can do that!

Under the ‘Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Foreign Entities Bill 2024’, only Australian citizens and permanent residents would be allowed to buy property in Australia for two years.

This Bill is about helping Australian home buyers, and especially first home buyers, to finally get a foot on the property ladder and their shot at the Great Aussie Dream.

The Great Australian Dream of home ownership was once the birthright of every Australian.

But in recent times, hardworking Aussies, no matter how hard they strive and no matter

how much they save, have been locked out of the market. The Great Australian Dream is slipping away before our eyes. It’s clear; immediate action is needed to ease demand and crack this housing crisis.

Boosting housing supply is going to take decades. A ban on cashed-up foreign buyers purchasing Aussie homes would take pressure off the market straight away. It would make thousands more homes available to Australians over the next two years, helping to ease the housing affordability crisis.

In the year to June 2022, there were 4,228 homes bagged by foreign buyers. That’s scarce housing stock that could have gone to more than 4000 Aussies, desperate for a home to call their own and who are being

crowded out of the market.

More than 75% of these properties sold for less than $1 million. That really is a shocker for young families and first-home buyers trying to get their start.

In these difficult economic times, we need to be putting the interests of Australians ahead of wealthy foreign property speculators.

Importantly, this is a measure that can make a real difference quickly – it’s much faster to implement this Bill than build 4,228 new homes to make up for those bought by foreign investors.

Other Commonwealth countries that have introduced similar measures include Canada, New Zealand and Singapore.

DEVASTATING LOCAL STORIES BROUGHT TO LIGHT AT FLOOD INSURANCE INQUIRY

T

he parliamentary inquiry into the storm and flood event of November 2022 is underway.

Here is an exchange I had with IAG (NRMA) CEO Nick Hawkins:

I fiercely advocated for the establishment of the probe, asking the Prime Minister in Question Time in May 2023 whether he would support an inquiry.

I asked, “don’t you think you should be saying sorry?”

During the hearings so far, I haven’t been convinced that the insurers really understand the pain and suffering they put policyholders through following the November 2022 storm and flood events.

I pressed again, “do you accept that there are policyholders in the central west that you need to apologise to?”

There has been a definite reluctance on the part of insurers to even talk about the impact they had on vulnerable customers.

Mr Hawkins replied, “if we’ve made a mistake, we definitely say we’re sorry.”

Mr Hawkins said in response “we would say that there are definitely examples where the way that we have managed the claim wasn’t as good as we should have. So I would definitely say sorry to those customers.”

SCONE SUCCESS AT THE RYDAL SHOW!

e had a terrific day at the 101st Rydal Show recently!

A huge thank you to the Rydal Show Society and all of the volunteers on a job well done!

And after a number of years of trying I was pretty chuffed to finally pick up a gong in the special scone section for pollies! It’s always hotly contested and you should have seen the state of our kitchen on Friday morning!

Reigning champion Natasha Hadley again took home the gold in the open section in what must be one of the longest (and well deserved) winning streaks in scone making history! Well done Natasha!

Throughout the hearings, I have raised the devastating stories of local residents who have been treated terribly by their insurers. I presented the story of the business owner in Molong who was told by the insurer that laying off employees she regarded as family was a “business saving.”

I anticipate that the inquiry will visit the Central West so that our residents can tell their stories.

I spoke of the case of an elderly resident of Eugowra who signed a legal document without being shown the terms, and the story of a couple from Molong who were living in a caravan and only had their claim progressed a year after the flood when we called their insurer out on a Facebook video.

It’s wine, friendly banter, community-centric event planning, inclusive socialising and most of all feminism. It’s women lifting up women, and I left feeling fabulous about myself.

Plus, I’m pretty sure Ryan Reynolds and Chris Hemsworth will make a return to my dreams soon.

A rainbow walk, festival, and street party will headline festivities for the first Orange Rainbow Festival, which will be held from March 22 to 24 to celebrate and support the city’s LBGTQIA+ young people.

The Rainbow Festival will kick off on Friday 22 March with Drag Bingo at the Greenhouse of Orange at the Ex-Services Club from 7pm, with guest Drag Queens

from Venom Vipers Entertainment and Productions.

The festival will continue from 1pm on Saturday 23 March with a Rainbow Walk from the Civic Square South Court across Lords Place to Robertson Park, followed by a festival in the park featuring market stalls, live music, Pride Pets and a local drag queen competition.

On Saturday night there will be a street disco in MacNamara Street with DJs, live bands and street performers from 7pm to midnight.

The festival will wrap up on Sunday 24 March with breakfast and a drag show at the Groundstone Café from 10am.

On Saturday, February 10, the Cultural Centre on Sale Street in Orange came alive with the opening of a new Orange Art Society exhibition “Orange and Beyond” — a collaboration of local talents Wanda Driscoll and Bronwyn Vaughan.

Capturing the essence of the town’s creative spirit, the exhibit showcased a diverse range of artworks, all available for purchase.

In addition to the exhibition, a special highlight was the weekly kid’s Art Class, facilitated by local artists every Saturday morning. Virtual Fencing Innovation Recently, I had the privilege of visiting Gallagher’s Queensland facility to witness their cutting-edge virtual fencing technology. This visit was insightful, showcasing the potential benefits for livestock management without physical barriers. Currently, legislative reform is needed in NSW to enable our farmers to use this technology. ROYAL FAR WEST MANLY TOUR This week brought an important meeting with Minister for Regional Health, Ryan Park MP, and fellow regional MPs at the Royal Far West Manly facility. We discussed a proposal to extend Royal Far West’s developmental services for country children to rurally based clinics in Wagga Wagga and Dubbo. This $6m per year proposal aims to address the paediatric crisis, improve access, and build capacity in rural communities. It's a step forward in ensuring our children receive the care and support they need, closer to home.

The exhibition will open at Orange Regional Gallery on Friday, 22 March 2024 and run until 2 June before moving to Canberra. This project is another great example of how our recently extended Gallery is attracting exceptional artists and creating opportunities for significant

fruit and

partnerships with metropolitan galleries.

‘Euan Macleod: Flux’ will present a series of en plain air paintings made by Macleod at Haupapa Tasman Glacier in New Zealand’s South Island, alongside a suite of studio works whose grand scale emulates their site of inspiration.

Macleod’s fascination with potentially dangerous environments recurs as he paints this sublime and inhospitable world of minerals, rock and ice. His climbers, often alone or linked by a rope to a companion figure or guide are metaphors through which the connection to and reliance on another human being is amplified.

The appearance of displaced or wandering figures is a hallmark of Macleod’s work, radically altering our reading of his paintings as ‘landscapes’.

He invites us into a psychological space in which he turns to face his prevailing sense of disquiet. Macleod’s achievement might best align with the words of Scottish mountaineer and poet, Nan Shepherd, when she suggests that in mountain experience “place and mind may interpenetrate till the nature of both is altered.”

Adjoining the glacier paintings are 200 works from an ongoing series Macleod has made of his friend Geoff Dixon. The portraits, created almost daily over the

FaceTime app, began in 2021 during Covid lockdowns as a way of maintaining a connection with Geoff, who had recently lost his partner. The two continue to meet regularly with over 450 portraits to date.

Hundreds of classic vintage cars, motorbikes and trucks packed into Sir Jack Brabham Park on Saturday, February 10 for the annual Gnoo Blas Classic. The 2024 event celebrated 25 years since the founding of the annual car show, which is held at the site of the historic Gnoo Blas racing circuit.

Organisers have expanded the program into a three-day event and Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club president Wayne Swadling says it’s only going to get bigger from here.

Orange Civic Theatre, 29 February Throughout her adventurous journalism career, one story intrigued Jane Hutcheon more than any other: the story of her mother Beatrice’s turbulent childhood in pre-Communist Shanghai.

After visiting Shanghai in 2018, Jane began to search for the truth of her mother’s difficult beginnings. Lost in Shanghai is her family’s story of survival.

It’s a tale of an ordinary Eurasian family in extraordinary times, set against a backdrop of fading colonial opulence and looming war. Beatrice becomes a journalist at the South China Morning Post in the 1950s, perhaps setting a precedent for her daughter. Using projected images from the family archive curated by renowned photographer William Yang and music composed and performed by Dr Terumi Narushima, Jane narrates the moving story of Lost in Shanghai in her own words.

range Film Society’s 39th season gets underway this Sunday, February 18 with a screening of Andrew Haigh’s heart-wrenching drama All of Us Strangers.

One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbour Harry (Paul Mescal), which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the

suburban town where he grew up, and the childhood home where his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell), appear to be living, just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before.

LIFEandTIMES It is school photo day in our house this week. This means finding a school shirt that isn’t covered in stains of paint and dirt.

It means polishing up the new school shoes which, remarkably, after one week are already filthy. It means trying to explain to young boys that brushing their hair for one day a year will not spell social disaster. All of this is so we can capture these moments in time that trace our children’s years through school. There is something special about the tradition of school photos. Our kids love looking at our old school photos and laughing at how daddy no longer has any hair. They love looking at their own school photos and seeing how they and their friends have grown up since kindergarten. But it is not just school photos that we get all excited and slightly stressed over in order to capture the perfect photo. Think about wedding photos or family portraits.

We make sure everything is just right. Our clothing, the time of day, the location just so we can try and capture the perfect moment. And the end results can be truly wonderful. But do they show us for who we really are? I remember having a family photo shoot once and it was so stressful.

The kids were tired and hungry because it was summer and the photographer wanted to shoot during ‘golden hour’. The photos came out beautifully but, whenever I see them, I am reminded of how stressful the whole situation was and that the photos really do not

convey the truth of what it was really like. And yet, in our visual world where photos and images reign, are we really showing ourselves for who we really are, or do we project a false sense of self on the world because we are afraid of people knowing what we are truly like? Even when we look at a photograph, we will rarely get a glimpse into who we are on the inside. If we were able to create a photograph that really and truly showed what we were like, would we be game enough to post it on social media for the world to see? Or would we try and delete it? Whilst we may like to try and create a sense of what we think we should be like or how we would like to be perceived, there is one who can see us for who we really are. In The Bible, God says these words that are incredibly searching: “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7b.) If this is true, which as a Christian I believe it is, then where does that leave us? The message of The Bible is that, despite what we may try to project to the world about who we think we are, God knows what we are really like. And the amazing hope that is found in him, is that even though God sees who we really are, he has still moved towards us through his son to give us true life.

An Invitation from the Orange Residents and Ratepayers Association The Orange Residents and Ratepayers Association (ORRA) invite all residents and ratepayers to attend their monthly meetings.

council election and is proud to have had Councillor Frances Kinghorne as our elected candidate at the last council elections.

It is vitally important that councils (being the sole providers of many important and essential services) are held accountable.

Councillor Kinghorne will again be the ORRA leading candidate at the upcoming council elections later this year and we look forward to her re-election and the election of additional ORRAendorsed candidates.

This is the purpose of the ORRA and the reason for the necessity of hundreds of similar ratepayer organisations throughout Australia.

The prime objective and focus of the councillors and council administration should be the most cost-effective and professional provision of the services that it is adequately funded by the Orange ratepayers to provide. (Orange council rates and charges are amongst the highest in the state).

Whilst we have many dedicated councillors and council staff members there will always be an essential need for ongoing scrutiny of council decisions and the spending of ratepayer funds.

ORRA meetings are held at 7pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Orange ExServices Club.

The Newbridge Swap Meet is back!

The popular swap meet had been running for well over 20 years (with a short break due to building work and then COVID-19) but the swap meet is back with a refreshed organising committee and a great sense of anticipation for what Sunday, February 18 will bring.

A swap meet is one of the easiest ways to convert into cash those treasures you’ve cleared out of the shed over the holidays. It’s also a great family day out finding treasures of your own. Stories of Newbridge Swap Meet finds are legendary, none more so than the vintage Indian motorcycle that was hauled out of a farm shed only to spark a bidding war on the day!

No need to book. Stallholders can enter from 6am and selling begins at 7am. Entry fee is $25 for stallholders – which includes a lucky door prize - and $5 for visitors ($10 per family). Parking at the showground. Stop by Stringybark Craft and Collectibles, the Olde Bridge Gallery and the Gladstone Hotel while you’re in the village.

Western Care Lodge looking for volunteers Western Care Lodge, situated on the Orange Hospital Campus, expects a busy year ahead, and we require additional volunteer support on weekends.

Volunteers will be needed to support guests, through some light shopping for bread and milk if required, having a chat, and attending to some small duties that include checking all external doors, helping a guest who may have locked themselves out and tidying the kitchen area.

If you have any issues or concerns regarding the spending decisions or function of council (eg. potholes, footpaths, planning, golden balls, Lords Place changes etc) then come along and air those concerns at an ORRA meeting.

It is a valuable support to have volunteer personnel on-site and the experience can be very rewarding. These volunteers fill a vital role for our lodge, which provides accommodation and support for regional and Far West patients receiving treatment at Orange Hospital who sometimes are staying for lengthy periods.

ORANGE PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP Our group will welcome 2024 with a meeting on Tuesday, February 20, at 6pm at Cafe Connect, 107 Prince Street, Orange.

Unfortunately, over recent months two of our long-time members have passed away; we send our condolences to their families.

A recent headline: ‘The King has an enlarged Prostate’. Why was this so significant?

Until the King went to hospital and had the appropriate scans he did not know if it was only an enlarged prostate or a problem caused by cancer. From reports the problem was only an enlarged prostate which is not life-threatening and is treatable, but the scan did detect cancer elsewhere. An enlarged prostate is a common condition that can affect all males. By the age of 60, 30 per cent, and at age 80, 50 per cent of men will have suffered this condition.

What is this thing called ‘prostate’? A gland of the male reproductive system, when it becomes enlarged it presses against the bladder and reduces the ability to pass water.

Why is this so significant? Prostate Cancer causes more deaths in men than breast cancer in women, and cannot be self-detected and is the number one cause of deaths due to cancer.

All the procedures that the King would have had are available in Orange.

The meeting will be for discussing the program for 2024 and contributions will be welcome from all members, but the main item will be greeting and chatting with fellow members and friends after the long Christmas break during our usual supper.

A BIG THUMBS UP to the

organisers, as well as all the sponsors and participants, of the Home Base Memorial Softball game at Wade Park on Saturday, January 20. Thumbs Up especially to the Orange District Softball Association.

This event was to honour the life of Kristy Armstrong after her life was taken in a domestic violence relationship in June 2023. The money from this event went to help support her three young daughters as well as directly support the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) programme ‘Love Bites’.

comment about the lack of visible 40km/h signage in and around the traffic area affected by the new speed limit. How right they are. The most 40 km/h traffic signage in this area are the illuminated speed signs relating to school zones, which are timed zones. Why not have them on 24/7? As well as this common sense idea has anyone done any research about the signage or lack of signage relating to side streets approaching this speed-controlled area?

Every street that enters this area should have appropriate speed limit signage that is visible to all traffic users. Why not have illuminated 40 km/h speed signs at every cross street in this area? Food for thought.

THUMBS DOWN to the person

stating in last week’s issue that they just got the paper for the competitions. The OC Life team put so much effort into the paper each week! As a stay-at-home mum, it’s a highlight to go to the shops just to get the paper on Thursdays! I can never wait to read Emily Thompson’s “The good-enough parent”. Always makes my day!

THUMBS UP to the PE teacher from Orange High School who graciously loaded my groceries onto the conveyor belt at Aldi when my toddler was struggling to sit in the trolley after a long shop. He is a great credit to Orange High and a reminder of good in the world.

A HUGE THUMBS UP and congratulations to the Gnoo Blas Classic Car Show Committee and the people who helped make this such a successful show and a most enjoyable day. A credit to you all! The ease of entry and the formation of cars, with plenty of food and coffee stalls made this day so successful.
