A prolific “Thumbs” contributor who was the first to mention a supposed lack of signage warning drivers of the 40km/h speed in the Orange CBD has written to us (following our piece in last week’s issue showing the abundant signs at every entry point to the high pedestrian activity zone) to bring to our attention that their complaint was submitted prior to the large “40” being stencilled on the roads. The same contributor later contacted us to retract a separate “Thumbs Down” about Orange City Council they had submitted for this week’s issue. Apparently when Council was contacted about it, their complaint was reasonably explained. We might suggest that our correspondent consider the lesson of this before their next (inevitable) submission.

Belinda Grieve, who is behind the “Come and Try” pickleball day at the PCYC Orange on Saturday, February 24, wants older women to step out of their comfort zone and try a new sport.

Proposed 55-plus women’s pickleball league promises plenty of ‘net’ benefits It’s the game that’s taking the world by storm and this Saturday, February 24, there is an opportunity for women over 55 to get in on the pickleball craze.

ickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Played with a solid paddle and a perforated plastic “wiffle ball” the game is easy to learn and can be less taxing on the body than tennis.

“I wanted to try and get older women to step out of their comfort zone a bit and play a new sport,” said Belinda Grieve, who is behind the “Come and Try” pickleball day at the PCYC Orange on Saturday morning.

Taking place between 9am and 12 noon, the day is open to any woman over the age of 55 who’d like to try the game for themselves or even just watch the demonstrations.

“They can come give it a go or just watch and then choose to give it a go.

We’ve got four women from pickleball in Dubbo coming down to give some demos,” explained Belinda, who is new to the game herself.

“I think it’s something slightly different, it’s a bit wacky and hopefully we’ll get a few women along and people suggesting to their mums and grandmas to give it a go,” she enthused.

The impetus for a women’s pickleball day came about after Belinda Grieve was selected to participate in the annual National Rural Women’s Coalition Muster in Canberra last year.

“We all know that as we age, it’s helpful to keep moving. A nurse friend reminded me that if you stop moving you die. Blunt but true. So the Pickleball project has been designed to introduce older women to a sport that keeps us moving but is easier on the older knees and hips.

The “Come and Try” pickleball day will be held this Saturday, February 24, 9am–12pm at the PCYC Orange.

Belinda is hoping for a good turnout that might lead to more regular pickleball sessions.

“Well the aim would be — if there’s enough interest — we’ll certainly get some regular games happening,” she said.

“The PCYC has been really supportive with that and they’ve got an older or seniors demographic here. So yeah, if there’s enough interest it will become a regular thing.”

First Tiger Snake found in Orange? ocal snake catcher Jake Hansen has wrangled hundreds of reptiles from properties all over Orange, but last week he was surprised when a call to remove a Tiger Snake turned out to be the real deal.

“After living in Orange for close to two decades and having caught hundreds of snakes, I’ve never seen a Tiger Snake here until this afternoon at Clifton Grove!” Jake posted to his “Orange Snake Service” Facebook page last Thursday.

“If there was a population of them here then I would have seen one by now. Highland Copperheads, Eastern Browns and Red-Bellied Blacks Snakes are the only large venomous snakes we get in Orange.”

But drive a half hour away to the east and you will find plenty of Tiger Snakes, along with the Eastern Browns and Red-Bellied Blacks Snakes, but no Copperheads.

“Tigers are — not always, but commonly — found around cold climate towns that have a large river.

Orange doesn’t have a big river so maybe that is a factor,” explains Jake.

While Jake has encountered many stories of people who claim to have seen a Tiger Snake in this area, he says there is no evidence at all of a local population.

“I hear about it all the time, but take it with a grain of salt because most of the general population can’t reliably identify snakes,” says Jake, who suspects the snake he found in Clifton Grove may have been inadvertently transported in from a neighbouring area.

“Every reported ‘Tiger Snake’ sighting over the years has either turned out to be a banded Eastern Brown or a Copperhead. I have never seen a photo of one, a dead one on the road, and there isn’t a single historical Tiger Snake record from Orange on any of the wildlife databases,” he continues.

“After living in Orange for close to two decades and having caught hundreds of snakes, I’ve never seen a Tiger Snake here until this afternoon…” Local snake catcher Jake Hansen displays the Tiger Snake he removed from a property at Clifton Grove.

“The other thing is that we have a really healthy population of Highland copperheads which are very similar to Tiger Snakes in terms of the ecological niche they both occupy: cold weather tolerant, primarily frog eaters when young, livebearing and like the same swampy habitats.”

But Highland Copperheads are more coldadapted than Tigers, says Jake, and they also like to make a meal of other snake species, which could explain why they have outcompeted Tiger Snakes here in Orange.

“But around the O’Connell, Tarana, Oberon area you will find both Copperheads and Tigers in similar numbers,” he says, “So who really knows?”

t is an exciting time for the Orange Regional Conservatorium as the longheld dream of a new builtfor-purpose facility finally becomes a reality.

Construction of the $33.5 million facility got underway last month and the Orange’s new conservatorium and planetarium is due to open its doors in the middle of 2025.

Overseeing the transition period is the newly appointed executive director, David Shaw, who has taken the reins after the retirement of much-loved former director Donna Riles.

David first started teaching piano and flute at the Con in 2017, quickly moving to take on the role of Head of Keyboards, a role he held until his recent appointment to director.

He said the opportunity to lead the organisation into the new building is an

amazing opportunity to be given.

“I’ve already been having so many interesting conversations over the last few weeks about the possibilities of the future and that’s extremely exciting!”

David said.

“The size and the purpose-built aspect of the new building is going to be absolutely incredible. There are very few places like this around NSW — let alone the rest of Australia or the world! So for a regional centre to have such a wonderful space to work in is incredible.”

The new building will include a 275seat auditorium, a 65-seat planetarium auditorium, 40 practice studios and rehearsal spaces, along with front and back-of-house facilities, office space and amenities.

The Con, David said, has long since outgrown its current building in Hill Street and having the extra room opens up so much potential.

“We are already at capacity and we are bulging at the seams trying to fit more and more things in that are of interest, and we are finding it very difficult to move past that,” he said.

“We have some instruments with wait lists as we just can’t fit another teacher into the building… but when we are in our new building we will have a bit of breathing space so I am really looking forward to realising more of the amazing ideas that the staff have here, connecting in many more ways to music and the community.”

The centrality and visibility of the new building in the cultural precinct, alongside the gallery, museum and library also lend itself to the possibility of some exciting collaborations, David said.

“I really enjoy cross-collaborating because you reach a different kind of audience and it is always exciting to see what happens when you get musicians to look up at an artwork and in essence

“It’s a really lovely way of engaging with different kinds of mediums so just being there, that’s going to be very exciting!”

The new building itself could also be the inspiration for new music, David said, with ideas already being floated for a fanfare being written for the opening ceremony next year.

“There are many ideas, I can’t say that it’s taken a particular shape yet but there’s talk of fanfares being written or played specifically for the opening…

“Given that it is a conservatorium and planetarium there’s a piece by Holst called the planet suites, which is a beautiful orchestral suite, and that has been floated as a piece of work to celebrate the new building. Nothing quite concrete but lots of really cool ideas!”

An old-school country fair helping preserve an old school building

Kinross Wolaroi School is gearing up for the return of their big Country Fair fundraiser on Saturday, March 2. he first Country Fair held since 2019, it promises to be a bumper day out with all the fun of an old-school fair, according to Kinross Wolaroi School event coordinator Harriet Alker, who said there will be something to delight all members of the family.

“The fair will have amusement rides like big slides, dodgem cars, a haunted house, tea cups and swings!”

Harriet said.

“There’ll be fun activities like plate smashing, water guns, treasure hunts,” she continued. “And then Gowrie our after-school care here at Kinross is holding a free fun stall for all the young kids, with drawing, painting, playdough, bubbles… fun free activities for the little ones!

Looking for unique and handcrafted items from local businesses? The fair marketplace will have lots to choose from.

“We’ve got around 20 external storeholders coming, which will be your area to shop for beautiful homemade gifts, clothing, garden sculptures, jewellery, candles, that type of thing,” Harriet said.

The money raised at the Fair will be dedicated to the restoration of the historic local building, including the Tower of the mansion which has been closed off for safety reasons for over five years. The restoration will also include the addition of a lift and ramps for wheelchair access.

“And then we’ve got about 16 parent-run stalls with fairy floss, popcorn, hot dogs, hot chips… we’ll also have a cake stall where you can take home some baked goods and homemade jams and chutney.”

And be sure to get your tickets in the $19,000 mega raffle, which boasts an array of fantastic prizes.

There’s a South Coast beach holiday, a luxury Orange “staycation”, tickets to the State of Origin, artworks, local wines, and more!

Cadia has been part of the community for the past 25 years and is seeking a new project approval to extend mining operations beyond 2031 so we can continue supporting regional investment, jobs and the energy transition. This project is known as the Cadia Continued Operations Project, or CCOP.

The CCOP assessment The CCOP is considered a State Significant Development and will require development consent under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (EP&A Act). CCOP may also require approval under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity and Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

A variation to Cadia’s Environment Protection Licence will be required as well as a new mining lease for the new CCOP areas, in addition to the current mining leases that cover the existing mining operations.

The approval applications will be accompanied by a detailed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which will include comprehensive assessments identifying the potential environmental, social and economic impacts of CCOP and how best to manage these.

Young karateka set to take on the world’s best in Portugal

F

our local martial arts students are bound for Portugal this October where they will compete against the best of the best at the 2024 World

Martial Arts Championships.

Cjhay Besgrove, Josh Newman, Madi Newman and Hannah Nicholls are all members of Orange’s long-running martial arts school, Kamao Martial Arts, founded 31 years ago by instructor Rolly Tandang.

To earn their place in Portugal, each of the four had to win events at a

regional and state level, then finish in the top five at the Australian Martial Arts Championships last year.

For 14-year-old Cjhay Besgrove, this will be her second world championships in two years. Having only begun training martial arts four years ago, last November Cjhay brought home two podium trophies from the 2023 World Martial Arts Championships in Japan.

“The whole club started competing and I wanted to see how far I could go with it,” said Cjhay. “It was a good opportunity and experience.”

We’re working hard to get everything back to normal.

For the other three, this October will be their first international competition.

Hannah was set to compete in Japan with Cjhay but unfortunately fell ill ahead of the tournament.

Instructor Rolly Tandang is confident his young students will prove themselves in Portugal.

“Cjahy won the World Karate Championship in Japan and these three are Australian Champions,” he said.

“Hannah was supposed to be in Japan last year but she got sick so it’s time for her to fight back this year and hopefully

we can bring home the bacon!

“Hopefully, we can make more champions in this town!”

As well as attending Kamao’s twiceweekly training sessions at the Bowen Public School hall in preparation for their journey to Portugal, the team are also actively fundraising to help them get over to the tournament.

This Saturday, February 24, look out for the team holding a barbecue at Autobarn Orange. They will also be running the Bunnings barbecue on April 13 and July 13.

Banjo’s birthday marks launch of 2024

aturday, February 17, marked 160 years since Orange’s favourite literary son, Andrew Barton ‘Banjo’ Paterson, was born and Central West Libraries used the occasion to launch the 2024 Banjo Paterson Writing Awards.

Established in 1991, the awards honour Paterson’s work with a competition encouraging Australian content both in prose and verse.

“The Banjo Paterson Writing Awards not only attract writers from across our region but across the country, which is a testament to its popularity as well as showing how Banjo’s work continues

to inspire new generations of writers,” Orange City Council’s Services Policy Committee Chair Cr Mel McDonell said, encouraging any aspiring writers or poets to enter their work.

Adults can enter the competition in two categories, with a first prize of $2000 up for grabs in each section. The categories are: • Short Story with a maximum word limit of 3000 words.

• Contemporary Poetry not exceeding 200 lines.

Last year’s Short Story winner was Timothy Guy of Cowra for his work Anna, a story about two young children who

encounter the bushranger Ben Hall.

The Contemporary Poetry prize went to Jonathan Cant, of Sydney, for Thunderstorm at Newton Boyd, an emotive and powerful reflection on the experiences of war.

Other past winners include David Astle, Barry Divola, Heather Bird, Angela Malone, Kit Denton and the author of crime novel Pine Creek, Kamille Roach.

Young people aged 16 and under can enter the children’s section for their chance to win a first prize of $200.

Children are asked to submit a short story no longer than 1000 words or a poem no longer than 30 lines.

Entry costs $15 per entry for adults and $5 per entry for the children’s section.

Entries close on Friday, May 10, and winners will be announced at the annual Orange Readers and Writers Festival, which will be held on Saturday, August 3.

Meet Craig Semple

W

– The Cop Who Fell to Earth

hen a young eighteenyear-old Craig Semple joined the New South Wales Police Force in 1988, he generally preferred to steer clear of trouble rather than turn and face it. But like so many young police officers, through a process of intentionally and selflessly turning towards danger, he gradually built resilience to fear. By the time he started locking horns with some of the most feared members of Australia’s outlaw motorcycle gangs, Craig thought himself completely bulletproof and fearless.

During a career spanning a quarter of a century, Craig saw just about everything: murder, drug addiction, suicide, fatal accidents, armed robbery, organised crime and much

MY FOREIGN HOME BUYER BAN WOULD HELP MORE AUSSIES GET INTO HOMES

L

ast week, I introduced my very first Private Member’s Bill to Parliament.

The ‘Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Foreign Entities Bill 2024’ would ban foreign buyers from the Australian residential property market for two years. This means only Australian citizens and permanent residents would be allowed to buy residential property over that time.

I drafted this Bill and presented it to Parliament because for so many hardworking Aussies, the Great Australian Dream of home ownership is slipping away before their eyes.

Immediate action is needed to ease demand and crack this housing affordability crisis.

Boosting housing supply is going to take a long time, perhaps decades. A ban on cashed-up foreign buyers purchasing Aussie homes would take pressure off the market straight away, and that is the aim of this Bill.

This Bill is not about turning our backs on the wider world.

Rather, it's about making thousands more homes available to hardworking Australians.

It's about helping Australian homebuyers, especially first-home buyers, finally get a foothold on the residential property ladder.

It's about helping more Australians get their shot at the Great Australian Dream.

The Bill stipulates that the penalty for contravening the prohibition is 800 penalty units, which equates to $250,000. A penalty of five times this amount may be imposed upon an offending foreign corporate entity, which equates to $1.25 million.

Importantly, the Bill also provides for the Federal Court of Australia to order the disposal of foreign-held residential property that contravenes the prohibition in the Bill.

In the year to June 2022, 4,228 homes were snapped up by foreign buyers. That scarce housing stock could have gone to 4,228 Aussies, desperate for a home to call their own, who are being crowded out of the market. More than 75 per cent of these properties

sold for less than $1 million. The year before, in the 12 months to 2021, 83 per cent of the homes purchased by foreign buyers were under $1 million.

That shows that foreign buyers and foreign speculators are snapping up entry-level homes.

And in the five years to June 2022, almost 37,000 residential properties on our shores were snapped up by foreign buyers. That's a huge number of homes that could've been the first rung on the property ladder for Australians.

In these difficult economic times, we need to be putting the interests of Australians ahead of wealthy foreign property speculators.

The government needs to bring this Bill on for debate on the double.

It's not enough just to believe in the Great Australian Dream.

It's our role as members of parliament to empower Aussies to achieve it. This Bill does just that.

STORM AND FLOOD INSURANCE INQUIRY UPDATE

T

he parliamentary inquiry into the storm and flood event of November 2022 is underway.

I fiercely advocated for the establishment of the probe, asking the Prime Minister in Question Time in May 2023 whether he would support an inquiry.

During the hearings so far, I haven’t been convinced that the insurers really understand the pain and suffering they put policyholders through following the November 2022 storm and flood events.

There has been a definite reluctance on

the part of insurers to even talk about the impact they had on vulnerable customers.

Here is an exchange I had with IAG (NRMA) CEO Nick Hawkins: I asked, “don’t you think you should be saying sorry?”

Paris works at the NSW Department of Primary Industries as a climate vulnerability assessment project officer. Paris is also the Central West Intrepid Landcare co-president, Central West Young Aggies secretary and is a committee member of Orange Show Society.

Eliza is an optometrist and co-runs Glenalbyn Santa Gertrudis east of Wellington. She is passionate about ensuring rural and regional patients receive the best

optometric care — no matter which corner of the country they live in.

Alana holds a Bachelor of Animal Science and is a qualified bovine breeding technician at Elite Genetics, which she owns and operates out of Gulgong. Alana also runs commercial cattle enterprise Rafferty Pastoral Company.

ickle ball is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. As part of the National Rural Women’s Coalition, Belinda Grieve has organised and ‘Come and Try’ day this Saturday 24 February at the Orange PCYC. If you’re a woman, 55 years and over this weekend is your chance to give it a go!

The day starts at 9am and promises to be a lot of fun. Pickleball is a paddle and ball sport that’s a bit like tennis. It’s developed a cult following in recent times and it will be great for our area.

Greek migration and cafes

wave of Greek free migrants arrived in the 1850s with the discovery of gold.

The way of life must have agreed with them because in the 1901 Census it was recorded that there were 878 people of Greek birth living in Australia.

Many were owners of shops and restaurants. In the mid-20th century every country town boasted at least two cafes — a ‘Niagara’ or a ‘Paragon’ or perhaps even a ‘Parthenon’.

They were sumptuous art deco masterpieces, the likes of which had never been seen before or since, and they successfully catered for the population’s hunger before being superseded by the chains of ‘take-aways’ that we know today.

Orange had several of these establishments, but the Rose Marie was one of the best. In fact, a 1928 advertisement described it as “The leading rendezvous of all tourists and others seeking a maximum of satisfaction and the best of service and attention,” also offering “Oyster suppers as a specialty.”

In fact, the first Greek cafes originally traded as oyster saloons, the owners sponsoring family members and others from the same region of their homeland,

to join them.

I spoke some time ago to Nick and Paul Kringas whose father, George, owned the Rose Marie in Summer St opposite the Royal Hotel.

They described it as an “impressive establishment with seating for 175 which, they think, made it one of the largest in NSW. They were also able to paint wonderful visual pictures of the café.

All the crockery as well as each chair was engraved with the letters ‘RM’.

George Snr. had the same initials set into the footpath and today these are heritage-listed and still can be seen between the Post Office and the Commonwealth Bank. Nick had the job of keeping them bright and shiny with a polishing rag and a lot of elbow grease.

“There was a decorative spiral iron staircase leading to accommodation for the male staff who were mostly newly arrived Greek migrants who couldn’t speak English,” said Nick.

The large Dalwood dishwasher, operated by one of the children, was in constant use and the massive coolroom kept the food fresh.

George and his wife Maude had four sons – Nick, Chris, George and Paul – who all earned pocket money for helping in the café.

Their father, Nick and Paul said, was meticulous about cleanliness and scrupulously inspected his staff every morning to make sure they were dressed correctly in the brown and green uniform on which was embroidered the ubiquitous ‘RM’.

George himself always wore a white shirt and tie, and Maude, who sat at the cash register, was the only one exempt from wearing a uniform.

George’s contribution was to have a reluctant Nick march in the parade dressed as a milkshake container.

“It was huge, almost seven feet high, made even higher by a tall straw coming out of the top,” remembers Nick with some horror.

“No ‘wog’ food was allowed,” Paul told me. “We were known for the quantity and quality of our food and the signature dishes were Chicken Maryland with crumbed banana and pineapple and, of course, the well-known ‘mixed grill’. On Thursdays, which was stock market day, we were always full.”

“I carried the thing on a wooden harness strapped to my shoulders inside the container, and walked down Summer Street advertising milkshakes.

The weight of it and the heat finally got to me and I began to stagger. To my huge embarrassment the man at the microphone called out: ‘Would the milkshake stop staggering and try to walk in a straight line!’”

George Snr. was a man of many talents, particularly when it came to advertising his establishment. Nick has mixed feelings about this.

The customers were, of course, of great importance and most of them seem to have very fond memories of the Rose Marie.

In the window of the shop George had constructed a large mechanical cow, complete with milkmaid, who was apparently obtaining real milk from the animal.

Pam lived in Bathurst as a child but her mother had been born in Orange and says: “It was always a special treat, when we came to Orange to eat at the Rose Marie.”

As president of the Greek Community Association which raised funds to build the swimming pool, he was particularly anxious to participate in the Cherry Blossom Festival Parade and it was at this festival that the milking cow made an

Mint: a multitude of uses

It’s the one you’ll most often find in gardens or for sale at your local nursery. Mints are perennial but will die back during the colder months. They are frost-resistant.

Make your own mint sauce.

You will need: • 1 cup of finely chopped mint

Mint is the easiest of plants to grow. In fact, it will readily take over so is best grown in a fully contained space. It prefers a moist, semi-shady spot but will tolerate full sun if kept well-watered. Planted in your garden, it will attract beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies but repel the nasties such as fleas, white fly, and common houseflies.

• 2-3 tsp of raw sugar • 1/2 cup of water • 3/4 cup white wine vinegar Place all the ingredients into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce

Be adventurous and try growing some chocolate mint, pineapple mint or apple mint. Any good nursery should be able to source them for you.

heat and simmer gently for five minutes.

Adjust to taste. Take off the heat, let cool and pour into a sterilised glass jar. This will keep in the fridge for weeks.

Here’s my go to list of fun (and delicious) things you can do with mint: Make some mint tea. Simply pluck a few leaves from the plant, crush them ever so slightly and steep in boiling water for a few minutes until infused. Add a little honey and a squeeze of lemon juice for a deliciously tangy and refreshing drink. It can be drunk hot or cold. You could add a few pieces of sliced orange if you wish. The bonus is that mint is great for your digestion. It can help alleviate indigestion, bloating and gas, calm a tummy, ease a common cold… and it freshens your breath.

Mint or Mentha is a genus of plants from the lamiaceae family. There are about 15 identified species of mint, most of which are edible. Pennyroyal also belongs to this genus and repels fleas but, beware, as it is toxic to dogs which seems kind of counterintuitive. Pennyroyal shouldn’t be consumed by humans either.

Mint is one of my favourite herbs. It smells beautiful and has a multitude of uses. It’s also good for you. The most common mint is Mentha spicata or Spear (common) Mint.

Dip it in chocolate. Pick a handful or so of large mint leaves, wash well and gently dry with some paper towel. Melt some quality chocolate in a small double saucepan and, using tongs, dip the leaves one at a time into the chocolate until lightly coated. Place them on some baking paper and pop into the fridge until the chocolate has reset. Eat. You will find they are totally irresistible.

Make a Tussie Mussie. These simple herbal, edible posies are a delight to make. Use long sprigs of mint, rosemary, tea roses,

sage, tarragon, basil – basically any herb you have to hand – bundle up into a posy and give as gifts to teachers, grandparents or other special people in your life.

Make some herb sugar. This delightful concoction will last for weeks in a cool pantry. It can be used to sprinkle over desserts (especially tasty over fruit salad), rim a glass of cordial or a cocktail, and is also a quirky addition when sprinkled over salads. Put 2-3 tablespoons of raw sugar and a large handful of mint into a food processor and blitz until smooth. It will make about a jar’s worth. Et voila! Herb sugar.

Shred some mint over some boiled baby potatoes, carrots and zucchini, add a jolly good knob of butter some salt and pepper and mash the lot slightly. I’ve never known a kid not to devour this simple goodness.

Saturday, February 17, saw bush poetry enthusiasts and history buffs celebrate the 160th birthday of Australia’s favourite poet Andrew Barton “Banjo” Paterson.

Banjo’s pen produced some of the most recognisable poems and ballads in Australia, and it was just north of Orange, on the property “Narrambla,” that he was born.

The big birthday was held at the site of the old “Narrambla” homestead on Ophir Road, in what is now known as Banjo Paterson Park. Attendees enjoyed a barbecue lunch, music from the Canobolas Pipe Band, games for the kids, and plenty of poetry.

Hundreds of classic vintage cars, motorbikes and trucks packed into Sir Jack Brabham Park on Saturday, February 10 for the annual Gnoo Blas Classic. The 2024 event celebrated 25 years since the founding of the annual car show, which is held at the site of the historic Gnoo Blas racing circuit.

Organisers have expanded the program into a three-day event and Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club president Wayne Swadling says it’s only going to get bigger from here.

he Missiles, “the hardest rocking cover band in the Central West” make their debut on the Victoria Hotel stage this Saturday night.

The Bathurst-based three-piece featuring Matthew Hawkey on guitar, George Pendarakis on drums and Jacob Snipe have been rocking the Central West for the past eight years, but this weekend will be their first venture into the Colour City.

“We recently did Parkes and Forbes but our main area is in Bathurst, Lithgow and Mudgee at the moment, but we are looking to break into Orange,” Jacob Snipe said.

“I used to frequent’ 4 on the 4loor’ and I’ve always wanted to play the Vic ever since then, so this is a big thing for me personally.”

It was Jacob who came up with The Missiles slogan, that they are” the hardest rocking cover band in the Central West” and it’s a claim he stands by.

“That’s what I believe!” he said. “We are a band that plays other people’s music as if we wrote it ourselves. We play it as if we wrote and believe every single word in the song!”

Head on down to the Victoria Hotel from this Saturday and they’ll prove it, Jacob said.

Sailing through life I’m very annoyed at my husband right now, because I recently had a dream where he cheated on me with our pharmacist. Despite him explaining, once again, that he can’t control what he does in my dreams, he apologised anyway because we’ve been together for 20 years and he knows it’ll just be easier this way.

But here’s the thing. In my dream, he not only apologised, but we immediately left his sister’s wedding (he doesn’t have a sister… my dreams get bizarre when I’m bored with life) and he took me on a speedboat ride in the Yarra River where we won the Sydney to Hobart.

I’ve been so sick that it’s been years since we’ve done fun stuff like that in real life. The last time we came close to sailing together was when I tripped at the lake playground and he had to help me out of that bouncy yellow boat while laughing hurtfully at my unco-ordination.

I explain all of this over breakfast and tell everyone we’re going to start having family adventures on Sundays.

At this point I was desperately wanting to say no, or ask to see an actual plan, or remind her she’s never done any woodwork before and that she needs Dad’s help not to perform

Instead, I applaud her ingenuity, and tell her I can’t wait to see what she comes up with.

There’s a common parenting saying: “This won’t end well.” I say it myself four minutes later when Miss Nine starts painting a picture of the sunset.

On the carpet. With glitter acrylics. But it’s rarely true. Things often don’t start well. But they might end with a future carpenter, artist or architect. However, I do demand Miss 15 ties her hair up and Miss 9 uses a drop sheet.

Because we still haven’t gotten the passionfruit yoghurt out of the carpet from three weeks ago.

Still – as she heads out to the garage with a measuring tape, pencil and four pages of Pinterest inspiration – Hubby decides to go with her, leaving Miss Nine and I alone. I ask her what she’d like to do in our special time alone together. Firstly she chooses PlayStation, but it only lasts three races of losing to me before she announces I’ll be sitting for a portrait.

This involves wearing my hair up (to hide the bald spot I have from tight hospital oxygen masks), wearing my hair down because she’s not confident with drawing ears, having the bowl of Pizza Shapes confiscated because I wasn’t sharing properly, and finally being passed the craft scissors because she’d rather draw me with a fringe but wants it to be “real, so just cut yourself one quickly please.”

She finishes by announcing it’ll just be done in lead pencil because it’s the colour of my hair and my wrinkles.

She hands it to me and it’s honestly the most beautiful picture she’s ever made, and I remind myself again that my days of having my daughter draw me, with me are numbered. I tell her I love her and hug her for too long.

Then we head out to the garage to see how many fingers her sister has left…

Newbridge Swap Meet roars back into life

The Newbridge Swap Meet roared back into life on Sunday with over 50 stallholders and around 600 visitors to the tiny village.

From motorcycles to toy cars, dressing screens to dress-ups, there was truly something for and a spectacular sunrise, visitors were treated to everything that nature could offer including, after everyone was packed up and gone, a massive thunderstorm.

Next year the Newbridge Swap Meet will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2025.

Five outstanding individuals were recently recognised in the Vocational Excellence Awards sponsored by Rotary Orange Daybreak.

Each winner demonstrated achievements, dedication to duty and service standards above and beyond expectations.

Orange Bridge Club held its Valentine’s teams event to celebrate this popular day.

Teams came from all over the Central West – including Dubbo, Bathurst and Parkes — and a fantastic day was had by all 68 participants, with Orange members providing wonderful morning and afternoon teas.

The two winning teams came from Orange: in first place were Jim and Ellie Fitz-Gerald, Piers Bannatyne and Robyn Pearce; and in second place were Anne Tonna, Jenny King, Denis Kristanda and Don Butler.

Bridge is a stimulating, challenging game and Orange Bridge Club is very proactive in encouraging new members.

JENNA HATTERSLEY for her work heading a team of around 70 staff at Housing Plus whose focus is domestic violence. Apart from their daily tasks, they have specially designed and equipped refuges in Orange and Bathurst with two more under development in Dubbo and other nearby towns.

ISSY FOX for delivering exceptional customer service to the patrons of The Agrestic Grocer. When 15 to 30 bike riders arrive at the café, she astounds them by remembering all their names and particular coffee orders. Her welcoming smile and genuine interest in her clientele make her unique.

RACHEL HEYWOOD combines previous management experience with a uniquely winning personality to provide exceptional service to Hansen Optometrists’ clients. She anticipates client needs, surpasses their expectations and is a treasured member of Hansen’s professional team.

PHILIP KIRKWOOD Formerly with the Rural Fire Service for 15 years, Phil began volunteering with the SES 11 years ago. Efficient, conscientious and energetic, Phil often works very long hours. He was awarded the SES Service Medal. He is known and respected at service and repair centres across the city.

FELICITY THOMAS is the practice manager at Dr David Howe’s surgery. She calms patient tensions with her quiet manner, friendly smile and friendly small talk. She has been known to fast-track appointments with Dr Howe himself, often within 24 hours! He says his practice could not operate without Felicity’s professional approach and sensitivity.

THE GREATEST LOVE STORY WITH MARK KEMP We all love watching a good love story, even our kids’ movies are full of love stories. It doesn’t need to be romantic love either… we also enjoy seeing familial love and the love shared between friends. There is just something about watching people who deeply care about and for each other that fills us with joy.

The Bible is also a love story, a love story between God and humankind.

It tells the tale of how, through our actions, we humans have corrupted the world. Relationships don’t work as well as we want them to and the

world is marred by war and conflict. In doing this we have destroyed God’s creation, but – instead of punishing us or abandoning us – God so loves us that he decided he would fix the mess we have created.

So, God placed the blame for ruining the world on his own son, Jesus. To spare us, Jesus took our punishment, so all who accept his loving gift are freely forgiven.

A HUGE THUMBS DOWN to the disgraceful state of the fountain at the Canobolas Crematorium. It is meant to be a lovely, peaceful place, but it’s an absolute disgrace.

THUMBS UP and another huge “thank you” to Nancy at the PCYC who takes our oldies “Revitalise with Nancy” class three days a week. You are amazing and such an inspiration to us all! On a cold, wet winter morning I sometimes think it would be nice to just roll over and go back to sleep, but I tell myself, “Well, if Nancy makes the effort to take the class then surely I can make an effort to attend!’ Good on you Nancy, I hope you live forever!

On Friday, March 1, those inclined to prayer are invited to join with other like-minded individuals, to pray at Orange Evangelical Church. The gathering is part of the international Christian initiative, The World Day of Prayer. The movement encircles the globe: each year it starts when the first service begins on the Island of Samoa, and prayer in numerous languages travels throughout the world. Although it’s difficult to know exactly how many participate worldwide, in a previous World Day of Prayer event, it was estimated that over three million people in over 170 countries participated.

That country becomes the sole focus for prayer on the day, and the prayers and stories shared are written years in advance by Christian women in the country of focus.

Seven years ago, a country was chosen for 2024, and that country is Palestine.

So, on the first Friday in March, you are invited to join together with others to pray for Christians in Palestine. The message of the Palestinian Christian women who wrote the prayer service is: “Unite your prayers with ours for a just

and peaceful solution that would bring an end to human suffering.”

The theme for the service is ‘Bear with one another in love’, inspired

by The Bible passage, Ephesians 4:1-5.

Since World Day of Prayer run under the motto ‘Informed Prayer and Prayerful Action’, services around Australia will support the Bible Society’s work in Palestine, raising funds for the Living Stones centre, a community gathering place that for years has provided safe refuge and support for Chrisitans in the Ramallah district, in the central West Bank.

Three Palestinian Christian women have shared their stories for the World Day of Prayer 2024. Eleonor shares: “My skin is wrinkled like the trunk of an olive tree. Like the olive trees, I have witnessed wars and violence…

As I have gone through life as a Palestinian Christian, I have chosen to be fully engaged with all members of the community… I could have left the country of my roots, but I made the choice to stay and live out Jesus’ commandment to love others as he has loved me.”
