Another edition done! The weeks really do seem to be flying past at the moment, it’s hard to believe it’s June already!

Who’s looking forward to a long weekend? I know I am and I’m pretty sure all the staff here at OC Life would agree. That of course means that our office will be closed on the King’s Birthday public holiday (still sounds strange!) on Monday, June 10. On Tuesday we will be flat-out finishing ahead of our print deadline that afternoon, so if you have something that needs to be included in our next edition please get it to us as soon as possible. We always try to accommodate customers and community submissions, but with limited time we can’t guarantee it.

Orange City Council says there has been an increase in acts of vandalism around our city and they are asking residents to keep an eye out and report incidents to police. Removing graffiti and repairing vandalism cost ratepayers over $90,000 last financial year and Council wants to get on top of it. If you see someone committing an act of vandalism, they ask that you contact the police immediately. You can also report graffiti and vandalism to Council online at www.orange.nsw.gov.au/report-it or by calling them during business hours on 63938 000.

We hope you enjoy this edition of OC Life and have a great long weekend!

Until next week!

Naturalist, author and nature sound recordist Andrew Skeoch says there is so we can learn from the world around us if we just listen. In his new book, Deep Listening to Nature, Andrew encourages people to stop, be still and really listen to the natural world. His book, which is accompanied by an online soundtrack of nearly 300 recordings, discusses how to identify species by call, interpret their communications and, most importantly, find empathy for their sentience. Andrew Skeoch will be giving a presentation at the Orange City Library on Thursday, June 13.

Dress-up drive to let all kids enjoy the magic of Book Week

Children’s charity Barnardos Australia — Orange have put out a call for donations of costumes to help take away the financial pressure many families face when it comes to dressing up for Book Week.

Each year, schools across Australia join in the fun of the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week, with student’s encouraged to come dressed as one of their favourite book characters.

But for many families, outfitting one or more children with costumes for one day of the year is a cost they simply cannot afford.

“We have been noticing that our families in lower socioeconomic groups were keeping their kids home from school during Book Week purely because of the costs of costumes,”

Program Manager for Family Preservation Services with Barnardos Australia – Orange, Eliza Gibbs, said.

“I just found it really upsetting because of course we want kids at school every day, but we also want them to celebrate reading and Book Week is one of the few times that you get to be out of uniform and with your peers, dressed up as whatever hero or character that you love.

“So it was really important for me that we could see more of these kids included and fewer keep missing out, both socially and educationally, in Book Week.”

Reaching out through social media, Eliza has asked people to donate any unused or outgrown costumes they may have at home, with Barnardos offering to pair each costume with a book.

“Kids grow out of costumes really quickly and I know, as a mum myself, that I’ve got a few laying around… I thought if we can give them to the kids we work with, but also if we get excess, other families in the community, that we would do that,” Eliza explained.

“And Barnardos have offered to pair each costume

with a book to make sure that kids have got books at home, but that they’ve got a book to match their costume for Book Week.”

At any one time, Eliza said there are at least 40 children that their service is working with in Orange and she would like to be able to see them all in costume at Book Week in August.

“Collins Bookshop has been amazing and donated both books and costumes and we’ve had two different people drop off costumes as well, but we still obviously would like a lot more, “ she said.

“The more the merrier really… hopefully we can help more than just our immediate clients, but also others in the community with some costumes and some books for all ages for Book Week in August.”

Donations can be handed in at Barnardos’ Orange office, located at 1 Hampden Avenue (behind the Orange Police Station).

Orange Credit Union soon to be Bank Orange

“What’s in a name?” asks the Immortal Bard in his play Romeo and Juliet. “That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

That may be so, but when it comes to people under the age of 40 choosing banking services the name does make a difference, according to research collected by Orange Credit Union.

Founded in Orange 60 years ago this December, the Orange Credit Union (originally the Email (Orange) Employees Credit Union and later Orange Mutual Credit Union) has announced that they will be changing their trading name to Bank Orange as of July 1, 2024.

It is a decision that they have not come to lightly, said CEO Lewis von Stieglitz.

“We’re totally committed and respecting of our heritage as a member-owned Credit Union — there is no change to that,” Mr von Stieglitz said.

But what has changed, he explained, is that fewer people actually know what a credit union does.

“There was a survey done a few years ago that showed that 79 per cent of people under the age of 40 don’t know that a credit union offers banking services,” he said.

Because of this, more and more credit unions and building societies are now using the name ‘bank’ to give people a clearer picture of what they do,” he explained.

“It’s like you don’t these days go down to the baths to have a swim, you go to the pool,” he said, giving an example of another change in common language usage.

“So what we’re doing is we’re saying we totally accept that. We want those younger people to come through and to recognise us and to not have a mixed message getting in the way. “We’ve been

using ‘bank’ or ‘banking’ as an adjective and a verb for years — the game is up!”

The soon-to-be Bank Orange has been through a number of name changes in its 60-year history, Mr von Stieglitz said.

But he wanted to make it clear that their business structure remains unchanged: they are still a customer-owned organisation with profits being put back into the business and its members.

“The good news is there is no change for all of our people. We are the same organisation, the same people. We’re always going to look after people. The change is just in visibility, particularly to younger people,” he said.

In the coming weeks, Mr von Stieglitz that people will see Orange Credit Union start to transition to the new name of Bank Orange across communications, digital platforms, and signage.

When I Was Twelve

“I wanted to tell the story of my father’s wartime childhood,” Katrina explained.

“What really brought it home for me, was when I had my own children, and when they were six years old and thinking about what it would be like if they didn’t see their father again until they were twelve.

“Just seeing how much a child changes year by year. Getting to know their little personalities, and just imagining, what would that be like for them, if their dad went away now (for six years). I find it hard when my husband goes away now for say 10 days.”

TIMEIS RUNNING OUT!

When I Was Twelve follows grandfather Nick Hutchins sharing the true story of his WWII childhood with his grandchildren, as they prepare for the annual ANZAC Day march.

RUNNING OUT!

Today, June 6, marks the 8oth anniversary of the D-Day landings on the Normandy coast that turned the Allies fortunes and ultimately led to the liberation of Europe and the end of World War II. In a new audiobook, children’s author and former Orange resident Katrina Roe, explores an often overlooked story of the war, that of the children left at home.

question about it.

That’s exactly what Nick Hutchins had to do… and his daughter Katrina Roe has written a children’s book about it.

You

and there was no

But it’s not just any ordinary book. This children’s book is an audio-only book, narrated by none other than Nick Hutchins himself.

Katrina recalls a moment her father shared with her of his childhood.

“His father took him down to the bottom of the garden when he was six, to have a man-to-man talk, and said to him, I’m off to war now, and you’re the man of the house now…. And my dad took that very seriously,” Katrina said. “His whole childhood was under the shadow of war.”

It was 10 years ago that Katrina started collecting her father’s memories. When he was young, Nick had to provide for his family, whether that meant killing a rabbit or catching a trout in the river to feed them, collecting the mail or the eggs.

Nick and his family were considered lucky, as Nick’s father came home after being a prisoner of war from 1940 until 1945.

“You were one of the lucky ones that your parent came home, when so many others died,” Katrina explained.

“You can’t complain about that, right? But I feel like in a way, the family wasn’t really acknowledged that they missed out on their dad.”

Nick didn’t reflect on this thought until he got older. But once he opened up, he recognised how his father’s absence really impacted him.

Parallel with this experience, Katrina

found herself traveling in the UK a number of years ago, where she discovered her grandfather’s prisoner of war journal. She never got to meet her grandfather, so reading the journal gave him a voice for the first time.

“I realised that he actually wanted to tell his story as well. And the way the journal was written was very clearly as a historical record. It was written thinking of future generations,” Katrina said.

This journal opened a new perspective for Katrina’s story.

“That sort of changed the story of being just about a childhood, to then also seeing the glimpses of what was going on for his father in Germany.”

Katrina reiterated similar themes that both men came across. For example, the family struggled to get enough food and rations.

“That’s mirrored by the passages in the prisoner of war journal where they’re talking about how they saw a gangrenous horse head used to make their food, and one man found an eyeball and ate it,” Katrina said.

Initially just wanting to capture her father’s memories as he heads into his 90s, Katrina saw a wider need for these stories to be remembered. She started thinking about how many people would be around to remember what growing up in the war looked like and recognised a need to put the war stories into context for children.

“I really wanted to write something that would be helpful to a lot of readers. That’s why it’s a short script… I want to talk to boys who maybe don’t pick up a book,” Katrina explained.

“It’s important to pass on the story because I think those who went through it wanted to be remembered,” she continued, “Reading my grandfather’s journal, I realised he wanted to be remembered. And I know that he doesn’t want what they went through to be forgotten.”

“A good place to start is to realise that you are hearing the voices of other living creatures,” says naturalist and well-known nature sound recordist Andrew Skeoch.

“And if you listen with empathy, you can feel the presence of another living creature and hear its aliveness in its voice.”

Andrew, a lifelong bird watcher and naturalist, has spent the last 30 years actively listening and documenting the soundscapes of our natural environment. Through his label, Listening Earth, he has published over one hundred recordings of wild places around the globe.

Andrew’s recordings have featured in audio installations and in films such as Peter Gabriel’s soundtrack to Phillip Noyce’s ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ and Disney’s 2016 remake of ‘The Jungle Book’.

In his new book, Deep Listening to Nature, Andrew encourages people to stop, be still and listen to the natural world around them.

“I’ve always been a nature kid and so as a teenager, I was bird watching and also drawing birds,” says Andrew, explaining how he came to the world of nature recording.

“But it wasn’t until I was about 30 and involved in music that I had a project that I thought I’d record some bird sounds to go with the music.”

Although Andrew had spent many hours in the Australian bush, he found listening attentively to what was happening around him an eye-opening experience.

“I just realised how amazing the natural soundscape was, how diverse and interesting,” Andrew says.

“I also realised that I wasn’t a very good listener and that if I was going to listen to nature, I had to really develop the skills to do so.”

Though sound you can learn so much about what’s going on in nature around you, says Andrew, but to do so you must develop the awareness to actually stay attuned, maintain attention, and hear the environment in an integrated way.

“Hearing the environment in an integrated way means hearing the relationships,” he explains.

“So you’re not just hearing individual voices — this bird, or that bird. or frogs or whatever — but you’re hearing the relationships between them. You’re hearing the communication amongst different creatures, different species and also within the species, within flocks of birds, or a small community, or something like that.

“So all of that just takes time; to learn about the species, their lives, how they interact, how they use communication to do so.”

When you really start to listen, you discover that there is always something to hear, says Andrew, recalling a windy morning in the arid landscape of central Australia when he had given up on being able to hear anything of interest.

“I turned the recorder on and really started listening, and a whole lot of things that I’d been previously unaware of started revealing themselves to me!” he says, adding that it was just one of many revelatory moments over the years.

Andrew began writing Deep Listening to Nature during the Covid lockdowns of 2020, consolidating the ideas he has developed through his work and had been presenting to audiences as a guest presenter and keynote speaker.

Through the book, which is accompanied by an online soundtrack of nearly 300 recordings, Andrew encourages people to tune in and listen to nature, and to make them aware of how much there is to learn through doing so.

“There is so much that we can learn about nature… you’re hearing evolution, you’re hearing different ecosystems, you can hear the health of the habitat, you can hear the interactions of different creatures in the environment,” says Andrew.

“That sound tells us what’s going on. It tells us how natural systems sustain themselves.”

Although we should not only listen to learn about nature, Andrew argues, by listening we can learn from nature.

“All the things that you can do in terms of identifying a species through voice behaviours, its repertoire and so on — that’s fascinating,” he says.

“But to listen with empathy is the beginning of listening with care and that’s listening with the heart and it’s just as important as listening with the head.

“We’re facing a lot of very serious problems, environmental and social, and nature’s been working out how to live sustainably for hundreds of millions of years and there is a lot that we can learn from that, and listening is what gives us the skills and information to do so.”

Covid again

Monday: Hubby wakes up with a cold, and I feel kind of tired. I head out to the supermarket for supplies and stop in at the chemist while I’m there. “I’d like real Sudafed for my cry-baby husband, please,” I say hilariously to the pharmacist. Unfortunately, the pharmacist is a man and fails to see the funny side, but helpfully suggests I buy RATs as well. We all test at home and watch those two lines appear with a panic I haven’t known since a (thankfully false) positive pregnancy test as a 19-year-old. We’re too busy to be sick this week, and I’m worried how COVID will affect my poor lungs. A quick call to my absolute hero of a respiratory nurse has me reassured and on anti-virals almost immediately.

I make a pot of veggie soup and announce I’m not cooking for the rest of the week. I put my most unattractive tracksuit on and hit the couch for the next seven days. I’m bored 13 minutes in.

Tuesday: The kids retreat to their rooms with screens and hubby and I watch romantic movies in bed. I normally hate romances, preferring action thrillers, but this stupid tumour in my head seems to be causing some weird changes. I no longer like the taste of tomatoes, I’ve become an emotional over-sharer who is slowly running out of friends and I now crave sappy love stories. This is too much for my carefully cultivated Netflix algorithm to cope with and it keeps trying to get me to watch comedies instead of the Hallmark garbage I want. Hubby and I attempt a “Netflix and chill” session but this is the moment Miss Nine walks in and declares herself no longer able to sleep alone and climbs in between us.

Wednesday: My amazing best friend drops off iced coffees for all of us, but leaves too quickly for me to jump in her car and run away to freedom. Hubby and I sit down with Miss Nine to see if we can sort out her bed anxiety and we realise she’s just sick and needs us right now. We hug her, feed her soup and

...My indifference to food persists and hubby realises that he can either cook or starve. So he does the only sensible thing… he makes a lasagne with Miss Nine’s “help”. ...

accept our newfound celibacy. I fill in my food diary for my dietician and see I’ve had about 300 calories a day this week. I’ve lost 5.5 kgs since Sunday and I sternly remind myself that I’m not meant to be losing weight this quickly, but it’s my biggest struggle right now.

Thursday: My indifference to food persists and hubby realises that he can either cook or starve. So he does the only sensible thing… he makes a lasagne with Miss Nine’s “help”. Hahahahahahahaha! I stop laughing when he asks how to do the layers, and I wonder when exactly he stopped cooking. Still, the kids love it and I’m just glad I didn’t have to cook.

AGED CARE VOLUNTEER VISITORS SCHEME

Through

Friday: Hubby appears to have gone insane from his kitchen session yesterday and announces he’s roasting a chook for dinner. I shrug and leave him to it. I do some exceptional parenting and bribe Miss 15 with the computer I confiscated yesterday if she’ll have a sleepover with her sister tonight. I let hubby know that it’s not 2020 anymore and he doesn’t need to hoard razors, and he can shave anytime he likes. “But why?” he asks glumly. I explain I’ve sorted out Miss Nine to sleepover with her sister, so our “Netflix and chill” session is back on again.

Weekend: We just sleep as COVID lethargy sets in, and the kids get really good at reheating lasagne. It’s an underappreciated skill. On Sunday night we all test negative so there’s a mad panic to get ready for school/work. The good news is that hubby shaves, so I can finally stop referring to him as ‘Alby Mangles’. The bad news is we realise I missed my gynaecologist appointment on Wednesday and our activities this week put us at risk of a COVID baby…

Keep your hands off our cash, says Gee

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, has introduced a Private Member’s Bill that that aims to preserve the use of cash in the national economy.

The Keeping Cash Transactions in Australia Bill 2024 is the second Private Member’s Bill that Mr Gee has introduced to Parliament and is has been done with the support of the Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter.

“Many people, across both my electorate of Calare and around our great country, hold concerns and fears that the use of cash for transactions in Australia is being phased out and will soon disappear,” said Mr Gee.

“Shockingly, while the law provides that banknotes and coins are legal tender, there is currently no legal requirement for banknotes or coins to be accepted for transactions in Australia.”

Mr Gee said this means that even if you are carrying Australian banknotes there is no guarantee that you will be able to complete a purchase in cash.

“It’s all at the discretion of the business,” he said. “If a business gives you notice that it won’t accept cash it won’t have to.”

The use of cash has been rapidly declining in Australia, but Mr Gee said

Casual speeding is the biggest cause of trauma on NSW roads

people should get to choose how they will pay for what they purchase — not financial institutions or businesses.

Mr Gee said the Keeping Cash Transactions in Australia Bill 2024 would legislate that businesses operating in face-to-face settings must offer to accept and, crucially, must accept cash payments for transactions that do not

exceed $10,000.

“Australians should have a choice as to how to spend their hard-earned dollars,” Mr Gee said.

“Not everyone is able to use online banking services. Many people, including senior Australians, find managing accounts and cards online to be stressful and confusing.

“Cash is often used in rural areas by people who do not have ready access to banking services or reliable internet access. Likewise, cash transactions are unaffected by digital failures. Cash is vital during outages or disasters.”

Mr Gee called on all Members of the House of Representatives to vote in favour of the Bill.

“The Keeping Cash Transactions in Australia Bill is all about freedom — the freedom for Australians to choose how they will pay for transactions.”

Dazzling Daphne

Smell can be the most evocative of our senses. The scent of the flowers of the Daphne plant transports me immediately to times spent with my grandpa in his garden when I was a very little girl. It is a treasured memory.

There are well over 80 species of this delightful (mainly) evergreen shrub which reside in the family Thymelaeaceae. Daphne is native to Asia, predominantly China and Japan.

The Daphne you are most likely to see in the Orange region is Daphne odora of which there are many varieties including some variegated versions. They prefer cool-temperate regions and are moderately frost-tolerant. Protect if a huge frost is predicted. They are drought-tolerant once established and planted in the right spot.

Forming a loose rounded shape, it can grow to 5ft in the right spot. Daphne’s don’t really need pruning, and can be notoriously fussy, so I’d only do so if there are any broken branches or signs of other damage. They don’t like being transplanted so choose your position with care. Nor do they

appreciate over-watering as they hate wet feet and are prone to root rot. A rich, slightly acidic, free-draining soil is best. If leaves begin to yellow at any point, it is most likely a nitrogen deficiency. They do benefit from a liquid fertiliser as the flowers begin to develop.

They are best planted in full sun to light shade in an easterly position as they cannot tolerate hot western sun.

The highly scented tubular flowers range in colour from white through to a deep pink with many appearing within the same inflorescence.

The flower buds should be starting to appear now and will begin to flower profusely over the next few weeks and can last through to mid-spring.

You can have a go at propagating by semihardwood cuttings once flowering has finished.

Daphne can be grown in a pot. Use a quality potting mix and add some coffee grounds as a useful ‘tonic’. They also make a good cut flower. All parts of the plant are toxic to you and your furry friends.

Mushroom Riso o

Many people think risotto is a tricky dish to cook. Trust me, it really isn’t. You might need to stir and oversee it a bit more than with other dishes, but it is well worth the effort.

You will need:

• 400g of a mix of swiss and white button mushrooms, sliced

• 2 large portobello mushrooms, sliced

• 2 large pine mushrooms, sliced

• 2pkts exotic mushrooms including Enoki, Oyster, Wood Ear, etc. roughly chopped.*

• Handful of dried porcini mushrooms

• One large onion or leek, finely chopped

• One stick of celery, finely chopped

• 1 – 1 ½ cups of quality arborio rice

• 1 cup of quality grated parmesan with some more to garnish

• 2-3 large knobs of butter

• A good glug of olive oil

• 1l mushroom stock

• 1l chicken stock

• 1 cup of white wine

• Salt and white pepper to taste

• One bunch of chervil finely chopped. If you can’t find any, flat leaf parsley will do.

METHOD

Start by putting the dried porcini mushrooms into a cup of

boiling water. Set to one side, leaving it to steep. Now place the butter, oil, onion (or leek), and celery into a large casserole pot or heavy-based saucepan and cook on medium heat until all is softened. Add your rice. Stir until the rice is thoroughly coated in the mix.

Using a soup ladle, start adding some stock*, bit by bit. Stir frequently. As the rice begins to absorb the liquid, add another ladle or two along with the wine.

Keep doing this until the rice begins to soften. Now add the parmesan and all your mushrooms including the water that the porcini has been steeping in.

Mix the mushrooms through the rice well. Keep stirring occasionally to ensure that it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Lower the heat if this is the case.

Add some salt and pepper to taste. Continue to add stock until the mushrooms are softened and cooked through and the rice is firm but cooked. If you feel you need some more liquid, add some water. All up the cooking process shouldn’t take more than 40 minutes.

Ladle into bowls, garnish with the extra parmesan and chervil and serve with a cheeky Pinot Noir.

Easily serves 6-8 as an entrée or main. If you have any leftover, it is even tastier the next day.

*Many people make their own stock and heat it in a separate saucepan before using, but I can never be bothered

RURAL HEALTH MATTERS

First made popular by Stephen Covey’s bestselling book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, Covey described it as a mindset that there is not enough to go around.

Scarcity mindset isn’t new. It’s been a part of the human psyche for as long as there has been people and things. Today it is amplified by social media, in lifestyle blogs, reality TV, commercials, and so on. It often feels like a pressure to look or behave a certain way and can cause us to both hoard things or to spend money on things we don’t need or want.

We now know that a scarcity mindset takes a mental toll on us – it robs our brains of valuable bandwidth to solve problems, to focus, or to be creative.

Scarcity mindset

you may never have heard of it, but you might be suffering from it

Studies have shown the effect to be comparable to missing a night’s sleep.

In effect a scarcity mindset turns our focus onto what we don’t have and in doing so makes us think of our fellow humans as competitors instead of team-mates. It can make us experience life like a game of musical chairs – with an anxious focus on ever-shrinking resources.

If we want to combat a scarcity mindset here are some tips and strategies:

• Learn to recognise the feeling of missing out;

• Incorporate gratitude into your daily life;

• Help others around you to thrive;

• Stop comparing yourself to others;

• Practice showing appreciation for others in your life;

• Surround yourself with positive people;

• Cultivate contentment;

• Remind yourself of your values & resist the persistent messages of scarcity.

Instead of starting your day thinking about what you’ve got to do or looking at other people’s lives as you scroll through social media, reflect on the positive things in your life. When you start to change your mindset from scarcity to one of gratitude and a sense of abundance, you will notice your overall wellbeing and happiness increase.

The Real Cowgirl: a story about being brave, being yourself and making new friends

Isabelle Duff always wanted to be a real cowgirl. She didn’t quite know what that meant when she was younger, but she soon found it’s about being brave, smart and wild.

So she wrote a book about it.

The Real Cowgirl is a children’s picture book written by Isabelle Duff and Susannah Crispe. It follows Sal and her pony, the animal that makes her feel the most safe and strong.

Isabelle said The Real Cowgirl is somewhat autobiographical for her. Although Sal is her mum's name, Isabelle explained that she struggled with social anxiety, and often found school scary. Just like Sal.

“Her safe place is in the bush, on her horse at home, not around other people,” Isabelle explained.

“It really uses the analogy of being a real cowgirl as being brave enough to do the things you need to do.”

These things might include going to school and making friends, even though it can be daunting.

“It really draws heavily on the values that I grew up with and that both my parents, but especially my mum, taught me. That being a cowgirl meant being brave and being kind.”

Isabelle grew up on a farm between Manildra and Cudal, and said her upbringing on the land instilled a real love of animals in her. This is reflected not only in The Real Cowgirl, but in Isabelle’s first book Cookie.

“So far, both my books have been about animals, and animals I grew up with,” Isabelle said.

“My pony Bindi, who I got when I was six, was just the greatest thing. Much like Sal, getting home from school where sometimes it had been hard, and just going for a little ride on my pony was really how I coped with a lot of stuff.”

Seeing a need for a conversation around mental health before high school age, Isabelle wants her readers to understand it’s OK to go through different feelings.

“I think we underestimate kids, and how perceptive and also incredibly empathetic they can be,” she said. “I think they do generally understand a lot more of

what's going on around them then we give them credit for. And I think that's something that made it quite hard to deal with mental health for me, was that we only really started having any kind of education around what good mental health was, or what mental illness was, when I was well into high school.”

Isabelle said that by that stage, kids are already quite prone to ignoring everything, and seeking help is often frowned upon.

“If we can educate them, obviously in an ageappropriate way, about big feelings and about how sometimes you may see a doctor, if you're sick, sometimes you need to see a doctor for your feelings, too,” she said.

The Real Cowgirl is available online and in bookstores.

YOUR LOCAL COUNCIL AT WORK

Vision for new Redmond Place residential precinct released

Orange City Council and Landcom have shared new community engagement data, which reveals locals’ top priorities for the future neighbourhood.

Results from surveys and workshops held earlier this year were used to develop a draft vision statement, which will guide design and development over the life of the project.

The draft vision states: “Redmond Place is the future of sustainable living in Orange with housing choices for people at every stage of life. An inclusive, safe and well-connected community, nestled within parks and tree-lined streets.

A neighbourhood designed to foster opportunities to learn, grow and evolve together.”

The vision and key consultation findings can be found at YourSay Orange at https://yoursay.orange. nsw.gov.au/.

The draft vision is open for comment until Sunday 16 June.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said the community engagement included online surveys, workshops and a popup session.

“We had 158 survey responses, two workshops, 60 conversations at the pop-up and 400 visitors to Your Say Orange,” Cr Hamling said.

Council asks community to report vandalism

Orange City Council is calling for community support to curb vandalism and antisocial behaviour following an increase in acts of vandalism.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling expressed his disappointment over the selfish actions of a few individuals.

“Vandalism in Orange affects everyone and costs the community thousands of dollars each year,” Cr

Hamling said.

“Damaging and defacing council property affects the use of these facilities for all residents of our beautiful city.”

Council facilities in public spaces including toilet blocks, outdoor tables and chairs, lights, solar panels, playground equipment, electric barbecues, fencing and signage have all been targeted.

In the 2022 / 2023 financial

“The key things we found were that we need more homes, but also that there’s room for smaller homes.

People are looking for different options. One third of the people who responded are looking for something different to the traditional detached home, like townhouses and terraces.”

Orange City Council Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Jeff Whitton said there were also some emerging themes about what the new suburb should deliver.

“We heard a lot about sustainability and affordability. People wanted access to public open space, natural areas and public transport. They also wanted a safe suburb,” Cr Whitton

said.

Landcom CEO Alexander Wendler said the community’s feedback would be used to create the concept masterplan.

“It was insightful to hear directly from locals what they value and want to see in the future development,” Mr Wendler said.

“We are looking forward to sharing our new masterplan with the community so that they can see their ideas come to life.”

A concept masterplan for the development will be released later this year. It will accompany a planning proposal to rezone the site for residential development.

year, 34 acts of graffiti and 10 acts of vandalism were reported to Council, costing more than $90,000 to fix.

“Vandalism doesn’t only impact residents but leaves a lasting impression on visitors as well, damaging the appearance of our town as Orange grows as a tourism destination,” Cr Hamling said.

“I am asking residents to keep an eye out for vandalism in our

community spaces and report it to Council. Don’t assume someone else will do it, report it so we can remove it. And if you see someone committing an act of vandalism, contact the police immediately.”

Residents can report graffiti and vandalism to Orange City Council online at https://www.orange. nsw.gov.au/report-it/ or by calling during business hours on 6393 8000.

Is Orange worthy of a Blue Plaque?

Know any significant Orange personalities, groups, or events that have left their mark on the history of NSW? The NSW Government is inviting everyone from individuals and families to schools and community organisations to submit a nomination for a Blue Plaque.

The Blue Plaques program is about uncovering and sharing the fascinating stories of the people and events that have shaped the history of our state. Since the program began in 2021, close to 50 plaques have been installed at public locations across the state. They include activists, authors, artists, architects, pioneers, philanthropists, groups including Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club and events such as the Soldiers’ Riots.

Now is the chance for Orange to nominate our own unsung hero, group or landmark event.

More than a dozen recipients will be chosen from

these submissions, which must be submitted prior to June 30, 2024.

This round of blue plaques will celebrate the diversity of our community, with nominations falling into themes including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, environment and sustainability, sport, social justice and advocacy, war-time stories, the elderly, disability, and LGBTQIA+ among others.

To be eligible for a Blue Plaque, the nominations must:

• relate to a person, people or event that has made a lasting impact on a community in NSW or NSW as a whole;

• be appropriate, sensitive and engaging to a wide audience;

• relate to a person or people who passed away more than 20 years ago, or an event that occurred more than 20 years ago; and

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH YOUR

TAX CUT?

In case you’ve missed any form of news over the last few months, pretty much everyone is getting a tax cut from 1 July.

What do you think you’ll do with your tax cut? Spend it, save it, or a combination?

How will you decide what to do with it?

One money management technique that has been proven to work is ‘Saving More Tomorrow’.

What do I mean by that? Well, when you get a pay rise, the moment you get it, increase the amount of your regular savings by some amount (obviously, the more the better).

If less tax is coming out of your pay, you just got a pay rise! Because it’s a pay rise, you’ve been living without it… that means that if you start putting part of the pay rise aside you won’t miss it. You should incorporate some of it into your lifestyle because you work hard and deserve it, but the trap here is that if you don’t immediately take action to save at least some of that pay rise, you will get used to having more to spend and it’s hard to then find the savings. Start saving BEFORE you get addicted to having more to spend.

‘Saving More Tomorrow’ avoids trying to save too much too soon. Often when people decide they want to start saving money, they start with the best of intentions and go hard early, blow up and give up. As with so many things to do with money, slow and steady works. Get rich slowly. ‘Saving More Tomorrow’ has been scientifically proven to work!

Make your first post-tax-cut pay cheque really count by making it the moment you put yourself on the path to financial freedom!

You could add a little extra to your savings each pay, you could increase your mortgage payments, you could invest some more money or salary sacrifice more to your super. As it is money you haven’t previously had, it will feel easy to do.

You’ll be doing your bit for the country by spending a little, while also doing a bit for your future self by directing some of your tax cut towards wealth creation.

Tomorrow has just arrived. Will you Save More Tomorrow?

Perhaps it’s time to supercharge the impacts by reviewing all aspects of your financial situation with some independent financial advice?

What colours work with beige sofas?

When styling a living room, it is important to start with a good base piece to build the rest of the room around.

One popular choice is a beige sofa. Beige is a versatile and neutral tone that can be easily styled to suit any aesthetic.

It allows for endless possibilities when it comes to adding accent colors and accessories.

When choosing colours to complement a beige sofa, it is important to consider the overall mood and style you want to achieve as this will determine the other furniture pieces you require.

A popular option is to stick with a monochromatic color scheme by using shades of beige, cream and white throughout the room.

This creates a contemporary yet serene atmosphere. You can also add interest and texture by incorporating different materials such as wood, metal or glass.

For a classic and timeless look, consider pairing your beige sofa with soft and muted tones such as light greys and warm browns like we have done here.

By pairing the OZ Design Houston sofa with the Skye armchair, these mixed materials elevate the overall feel of the home.

To achieve a gorgeous cohesive look, also consider using the same timber collection for your coffee table, side table and dining space.

Ultimately, the best colours to pair with a beige sofa will depend on your personal style and the overall look you want to achieve.

Experiment with different colour combinations to find the perfect match for your desired space.

When asked what home improvements meant to their business, Leanne replied it’s about helping prospective customers looking to make an addition or enhancement to their property.

“It’s all about making it work for the customer,” Leanne said.

“We ensure we help prospective customers that come in and want to do something new

with their home. We can offer customised solutions to fit their exact space and colours chosen.

“Apart from ensuring we complete highquality work, we’re forming a good reputation for customer service. We’re a good professional choice for home renovation options.”

Orange Glass and Glazing Service can install or repair shower screens and mirrors, splashbacks for kitchens and laundries (or anywhere else people want them), security screen doors, barrier screens, fly screens, pool fences, balustrades, and dog or cat doors.

They also do commercial shop fronts and glazing, glass replacement in windows and doors, glass cut to size and replacement of heatproof ceramic glass in wood-fired doors.

Minimise your banking fees and save

In an age where managing your finances intelligently is crucial, finding ways to cut down on banking fees is a real concern for many of us. But don’t worry, there are some savvy moves you can make to reduce those fees and keep more of your hard-earned money where it belongs – in your pocket.

Stay ahead of the game by regularly reviewing your bank statements. Opting for eStatements via Internet Banking not only helps the environment by going paperless but also helps you catch any mistakes or suspicious activity quickly, saving you both time and money.

When it’s time to pay the bills, make life easier by using BPAY and Internet Banking to set up automatic payments. Just remember to keep enough funds in your account to

And ever thought about exploring different banking products? They come with different fee structures, so it’s worth considering which ones match your financial needs the best. What we love about Burrendong Way is sitting in the beautiful winter sun that comes into the house through the east and north

windows. Looking out over the wetlands and watching the birds flit around the garden, especially our favourites the fairy wrens. We feel like we are out bush, but only 5 mins from the shops. The neighbours are always giving a friendly wave if we see them as we come and go. We are sad to say goodbye to our home of 10 years but we will always have the happy memories of friends over for dinner and enjoying the private, peaceful garden.

AROUND THE GROUNDS with DALLAS REEVES

Orange Wanderers picked up two crucial wins on the road in men’s Central West Premier League Hockey last Saturday (June 1).

Wanderers were able to beat hosts Parkes United 2-1 before defeating Dubbo Lions 4-3 in a neutral clash as the men’s competition is played every three weekends.

Parkes (one win, one loss), Orange and Bathurst (two losses) also had double headers so that meant Orange Wanderers were the only side to record two wins at Parkes.

In a contested table, four sides (Parkes, +5 goal difference), Lithgow (+4), Dubbo (+2) and Orange (+1) are all on eight points with two wins apiece.

Lithgow, Dubbo and Wanderers all have a game in hand though with 2-1 win-loss records while despite their good goal difference Parkes are 2-2.

It sets up an interesting third round on Saturday, June 22 at Bathurst where Wanderers have one game against last-placed Bathurst United. It was a solid weekend all-round for Orange teams in Central West Premier League Hockey.

Orange CYMS returned to form with a 1-1 women’s draw against Bathurst City while Orange United put in arguably one of their best efforts of 2024 when they lost just 2-nil to the ladder-leading Lithgow Panthers.

The results mean that after the first five women’s rounds, Panthers (18 points) and Bathurst City (16 points) remain undefeated, but Lithgow have won four matches and drawn one, while Bathurst City have won three and drawn two. CYMS (14 points) are in third with a 3-1-1 windraw-loss record.

Orange United are on two points with a draw and four losses.

IT was not a good Sunday for Orange’s two teams in rugby league’s Peter McDonald Premiership on June 2.

Hawks went down 28-24 to Nyngan in a crucial first grade clash at Wade Park that now sees Shane Rodney’s side sit on the bottom of the ladder.

Reserve grade was a 24-all draw, while Hawks (60-nil in under 18s) and (36-4 in blues tag) were comfortable winners in the other two fixtures. Those results mean defending champions Hawks are third (10 points) in under-18s with reserve grade and blues tag both mid-table.

Meanwhile, Orange CYMS travelled to Parkes to take on the Spacemen and the hosts relegated the green-and-yellows to third place on the first grade ladder after Parkes won 36-20 at Jock Colley Field.

Mudgee jumped back on top of the table with an emphatic 68-6 win against Dubbo CYMS at Mudgee with Parkes jumping to second place after its win, also on 10 points.

The points were split across the lower grades as Orange CYMS ran into its toughest opposition all year.

Orange CYMS’ blues tag were dominant 40-6 winners, but reserve grade had their first loss of the year, going down 26-18 to Parkes.

It was a was a 22-all draw in under 18s and Orange CYMS (11 points) still lead that competition.

Orange CYMS (12 points, first due to a points difference of +220) heads a blues tag competition where last year’s grand finalists Bathurst St Pat’s and Dubbo Macquarie are also undefeated with six wins.

It’s also only points difference that separates Orange CYMS (10, +96, second) and leaders Mudgee (10, +120) in reserve grade.

In Woodbridge Cup action, Orange United

scored important wins in first grade (46-18) and blues tag (46-12) against Cargo. Youth league was also in action at Cargo, against Canowindra, and went down 32-14.

ORANGE Emus have disposed of Dubbo Kangaroos 57-7 in Blowes Cup Rugby Union first grade action to stamp themselves as a premiership contender.

After scoring seven tries in a four-point loss to undefeated Bathurst Bulldogs the week before, Emus maintained momentum with a ten-triesto-nil rout away from home.

The big bonus-point win keeps Emus (22 points, +80 points difference) in second place on points difference from Forbes Platypi (22, -22).

Dubbo Kangaroos won second grade (32-7), third grade (10-7), colts (19-10) and women’s (247) before Emus spoiled the party in the main game.

Meanwhile, Orange City Lions lost a first grade thriller 31-29 against Cowra at Cowra.

It was the Eagles’ first win of 2024 in the top grade and a game Orange City could lament. The Lions remain in fourth place (16, -35).

In the women’s clash Orange City scored a 24-10 success, their second win of 2024.

In Orange District Football Association men’s A-grade matches across last weekend, last-placed Cowra and ladders leaders Barnstoneworth United FC had a 2-2 draw. Saints and CYMS Seniors who are on the same competition points drew (3-3) while Waratahs FC defeated Pinnacle FC 4-0.

Barnies (29) and Waratahs (25) lead after nine rounds with CYMS and Saints both on 23 points, superior goal difference keeping CYMS in third grade according to the ODFA table on the Dribl platform for soccer results. Pinnacle (18) and Cowra (13) round out the table.

In the women’s open age ODFA competition, the current table has Cowra (28) on top from CSU Cockatoos Pink (22) with Orange Waratahs White (20) and Orange Waratahs Blue (19) in third and fourth place.

Blayney (18), Barnestoneworth United FC (16), Orange Ex-Services (11), Kinross (10) and CSU Cockatoos Yellow (six) are in pursuit in the nineteam competition.

Waratahs FC had a bye in the Western Premier League.

Orange Tigers travelled to Dubbo on Saturday (June 1) where they succumbed to the hosts by 20 points in Central West AFL tier one action. Scores were locked at 15-all at quarter-time and at half-time Dubbo held a slender fivepoint lead before a big third quarter for the hosts was critical in the 10.9 (69) to 7.7. (49) Dubbo win.

Orange’s tier two (reserve grade) men’s side have had three wins from their first six matches, but last Saturday, they went down 7.4 (46) to 4.6 (30) against Parkes at Dubbo.

The Orange women’s squad had a bye.

ENDSLEIGH HOUSE

Endsleigh House, in Endsleigh Avenue, is a rare survival from the earliest days of Orange. It was built in about 1858 for ex-convict Joseph Moulder and he lived there with his wife and children until his death in 1866. The Government bought a long tract of land from Moulder for the railway line but Moulder’s wife Caroline is said to have insisted that a bridge be built over the cutting so that she could visit her son and his family, who lived in Lords Place.

Image supplied by John Kich, Orange & District Historical Society. Volunteers from the society carry out various tasks each Wednesday at their headquarters at 148 March Street from 10.30am to 4pm. Members of the public are welcome to call in with queries on local and family history.

CROSS purposes

FIT FOR PURPOSE

WITH JOSH MARTIN

The world we live in is so full of distractions and competing ideologies, it can be hard to work out where we fit. Do we go along with the moral values of a society portrayed by the media? Do we consider where these moral values lead our society in 20 years’ time? Do we have the courage to disagree, while balancing our desire to fit in?

We all want to have friends that are the same as us, believe in similar virtues, and live similar lives. While also respecting each person’s individuality and allowing them to be themselves. At times we can be torn between being what society expects and who we really are. Our own thoughts can lead us into the depths of worry, confusion, and feelings of not belonging, which may lead to us feeling unloved or wondering whether we have a purpose.

The Bible confirms for us that we have a purpose, value as individuals and are greatly loved. Psalm 139 tells us we were specifically made, with great care and value. John 3:16 shows us God’s great love for us by sending his son to die on a cross to pay a debt we cannot pay.

The centre letter must be included and each letter may only be used once. No colloquial or foreign words. No capitalised nouns, apostrophes or plural words ending in “s”. Each number corresponds to a letter of the alphabet. Two have been filled in for you, can you work out the rest? Can you find all the words listed? The leftover letters will spell out a secret message. To solve a Sudoku puzzle, every number from 1 to 9 must appear in: each of the nine vertical columns, each of the nine horizontal rows and each of the nine 3 x 3 boxes. THUMBS UPto the lovely person who found my phone in the Woolworths car park and handed it into the police. Your kindness was much appreciated and helped me out a lot!

THUMBS UPto all the Just Cuts staff — Jamie, Viktoria and Inge — who always make having my haircut such an “enjoyable, pleasant and wonderful experience” and “your haircuts” always give me such a lift! You “3” are just so “special!” Thank you, thank you, thank you!

THUMBS UPto all the Dudley Private Hospital staff including Jayne, Ross and Amy who were so very friendly, helpful and professional when I had my hand operation last week. You reduced my anxiety and treated me with kindness and compassion. You are all a wonderful credit to the hospital and the community you serve as a whole! Thank you all so very much!

THUMBS DOWN to the person seen on camera stealing the Australian flag from a local hospital at 1.48am Saturday, May 25

THUMBS UP to Rob and team at Robert Findlay Electrical Services. Rob and his team worked right through miserable weather on a recent Saturday to sort out our outside lighting. We had a 60th party scheduled on Saturday evening and a couple of power sockets failed, which meant no light or heating for the guests. Rob was quick to respond and had it all sorted in no time. We want to thank you for being so efficient, skilled and responsive. We’d recommend Rob and the team. From Narelle and Tony at the Railway Hotel, Spring Hill

THUMBS DOWN to the person chosen to judge at a function I recently attended. If that person is ever called upon to judge anything in future, my advice is “take your blinkers off and look at all the other entrants, not just those standing directly in front of you because all entrants deserve an equal chance”.

THUMBS UP to the Orange Theatre Company for their production of The Addams Family. It was a great show. Thank you to all who were involved.

THUMBS DOWN to the women who stole a tree and rose from Canobolas Gardens Crematorium. They were for a family memorial. How could you do this to a grieving family. Hopefully, you will get a knock on your door soon.

THUMBS UP to Brendan at Harvey Norman for resolving an issue I had in a professional and helpful manner. I was most impressed by the attention given and extremely happy with the outcome.

THUMBS UP and thank you to all who helped to make the Orange Senior Hub’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser a success. A total of $1,794 was raised and special thanks must go to Sam, Louise and Michelle from the Hub, the lovely young people from the Omnia Employment Services, to Mel from the Cancer Council who gave so much information on the work of the foundation. Thanks also to all the family and friends for their generosity with raffles and delicious food and to all who helped on the day. And finally, thank you to all who attended and gave so generously.

THUMBS UP to the nursing staff at Ascott Gardens, particularly the one who gave me a CD of Glenn Miller, it made my day. They are all so lovely and caring, thank you for taking such good care of me.

THUMBS UP to Aiden from Excellent Restorations, for the help he gave us after our house was flooded.

THUMBS UPto the team at Mullion Produce for having to deal with an entitled and rude ‘Karen’ customer while I was in the store today. You guys were so polite to her and handled the situation with way more dignity than I would have. You guys are awesome.

THUMBS DOWN to that customer! Your hissy fit was absolutely disgraceful and shameful. You’re a fully grown woman and your behaviour was shocking. All over a 15c plastic bag!

THUMBS UP to Ella at Andrew Gee’s office.

THUMBS DOWNto the person in charge of clocks at the Orange Aquatic Centre. The 60-second clock has not been working for months. Anyone involved in swimming knows a 60-second clock is essential for training. If management at Council were swimmers rather than bike riders this would have been fixed months ago. Maybe the bee clock could be moved?

THUMBS UPTo the kind, honest person who found my wallet, which I had dropped in Landers Music store, and handed it in; Your kind deed brought instant relief to my anxiety levels. I’m so grateful. Thank you.
