Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among other things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

We must apologise to anyone who tried to enter our Road to Laurel Canyon Ticket Giveaway via the QR code, which, instead of taking you to our website, was linked to a PDF document from another advertisement. We’re sorry! There were a few power issues during the stormy final hours we were putting the magazine together last week and something obviously went wrong. We still had quite a number of people enter via the link we put up on social media as well as by email and phone and no wonder — it looks like being a great show.

This is the final week of our popular ‘Let’s Feast’ feature giveaway and the final one for the year. So make sure you get your entries in for a chance to win a $75 voucher to your ‘Let’s Feast’ venue of choice. All the details are on page 25. Good Luck! We will be back with more delicious local feasting options in 2025.

I’ve recently been contacted by a gentleman who’s trying to find 2CR radio schedules from the early 1960s for a writing project. Specifically, he’s after the daily weekday time of broadcast of the lunchtime edition of the ABC news during the period 1960–63. As in was it 12.30pm, 12.45 pm or 1pm? If you can answer that question, he would appreciate it if you could get in touch. And if you have a whole programming schedule that would be very greatly appreciated.

As you will see inside this edition, our monthly home improvement feature ‘Home Life’ is back. Each month, we showcase a range of products and services from local businesses to give you inspiration or ideas and maybe even push you to tackle those home improvement projects you’ve been thinking about. The Home Life feature begins on page 31. If you are a business that would like to be part of our next feature, give us a call.

A quick shoutout to Rowlee Wines’ Dining and Bar.. My wife and I treated ourselves to lunch for our wedding anniversary on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the fantastic venue. It’s a great asset for Orange and well worth a visit.

Until next week!

OAMS $4 million hydrotherapy pool gets the go-ahead

Construction of a new $4 million indoor hydrotherapy pool at the Orange Aboriginal Medical Service (OAMS) in the Gateway Estate is set to begin after plans for the community facility were given the final tick of approval.

The new facility will be built at the OAMS precinct in Cameron Place, adjoining the existing Walu-Win Centre. Along with a 10x12m program pool and gym, the building will include consulting rooms, storerooms, a plant room, and amenities.

OAMS received funding for the facility from the Department of Health and Aged Care, along with support from Newmont Cadia.

“Our hydrotherapy pool is an extension of our existing Walu-Win health services,” OAMS Board Chair Alisha Aglund said at the official groundbreaking ceremony last week.

“So I’m very excited to see this commencing. It’s been a long haul and we’ve been very committed in the last four years to getting this design exactly right.

“But I guess the most exciting point for me is that it is extending our preventative health,” she continued.

“Often for our people and certain parts of our community they’re priced out of such services. So, to now be able to have autonomy and choice over their health journey and wellness journey – this is a first for our community, but also for the way that we look at healthcare.

“Whilst it is just a pool, it’s going to be so much more than that, and we’re so excited to bring this to life for our community to call their own!”

The Orange Aboriginal Medical Service began 20 years ago this year in May 2004 and first opened its clinic to patients the following year. From a small building in Palmer Street and seven staff, the organisation now operates five facilities

and employs more than 140 people.

OAMS CEO/Managing Director Jamie Newman was part of the initial committee formed in 1998 to set up a local Aboriginal Medical Service. He said he is proud of what the organisation has been able to achieve in this time delivering a growing range of free primary and allied health services for people in Orange.

“We’ve grown significantly over 20 years,” Mr Newman said. “If we want to be saying that we want better health outcomes, then you have to be innovative in what you deliver. You just can’t have a doctor and a nurse and that’s it. It’s got to be more than that. It’s got to be a speech pathologist. It has got to

be audiologists. It’s got to be exercise physiologists, physiotherapists, mental health clinicians… So we have a range of services here that cater to the needs of the community.

“People need to have access to health care, and if it’s accessible, then people are going to come. That’s how we get health outcomes.”

The new hydrotherapy pool, Mr Newman said, is part of their vision for the future of the service, one that caters for people from “Birthing to Dreaming” with a focus on preventive health, not only treating illness.

“Hence why hydrotherapy is crucial for us, for our frail aged, people with disabilities, people recovering from injuries, whether it’s sport related or just injuries in the home. Or even doing intervention/prevention programs like pregnant women doing aqua therapy classes before they have babies,” Mr Newmans said.

“Our vision of Birthing to Dreaming is we need to be connecting with our babies so that we put them on a pathway of being well, not reacting to illness and disease… We’ve got to be working with our young mums. We’ve got to be working with parents, working with families to ensure that our babies come to this world well and maintain wellness throughout that cycle of life.”

PEOPLE OF O-TOWN

Madeline Young

Artist, Curator and Director at The Corner Store Gallery, which used to be her local lolly shop growing up! Now she runs the gallery and lives just behind it with her son and dog. Living the dream in East Orange!

What do you do for a living and what do you love about it?

I’m an artist and the curator and director at The Corner Store Art Gallery in East Orange. I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Newcastle in 2009, and since then, I’ve had the opportunity to exhibit my work widely across Australia in both solo and group shows over the past. I suppose I’m just obsessed with art, I just live and breathe it and I wanted to make a space in this town where people just could come and enjoy it, ideally purchase it, but if they can’t that’s absolutely fine, you’re still allowed to come and enjoy it. I get to bring art to this town from outside and also showcase artists from the local area and promote them.

Where would you go for your ideal birthday dinner?

Ah, Lucetta, at the moment- I did actually do that for my birthday. But it was great, I loved it, it’s my new fave! We just booked the set banquet. I don’t eat seafood, so they did a non-seafood banquet for us. It was bloody delicious. What fills your cup?

Ooh, my friends definitely, time with them is absolutely cup filling. The sun, the

trees, I suppose I should say my kid too! And my job does, 100%. I love my job.

Are you a dog person, a cat person or other?

Definitely a dog person! I’ve got one doggo, sadly our other one died a couple of years ago. She’s a Kelpie/Lab. She’s the sweetest dog. Her name is Dotty and she’s 12. She was always such an energetic dog and it’s only been the last year she’s calmed down.

Which person from history would you most like to meet?

Definitely a feminist. I love feminism, it’s something I’m passionate about. Probably Clementine Ford. She’s not from history, but I love her. She’s amazing. Actually, Hannah Ferguson’s a new one. She’s from Orange, and also amazing. She’s very smart.

If you were running for Mayor, what would your campaign slogan be?

More trees! Lots more trees. I’ll just probably ban the dudes that want to trim them around here to accommodate the power lines. But just to stay cultured, with our incredible tree-lined streetscapes that make Orange such a beautiful place to live.

The pathway extends from the school along the southern edge of the Mitchell Highway, over a new footbridge crossing Ploughmans Creek and connects to existing footpaths in front of the Rural Fire Service station.

Orange Anglican Grammar School principal, Rev Louis Stringer, said it is an exciting time for their school community as it is the first time in their 18year history that they have safe pedestrian access for students.

“It is a significant milestone in the history of OAGS and it is actually the first time in our journey that a dedicated pedestrian and cycle pathway connects our school to the city which we’re excited about because it promotes accessibility, sustainability and community connections,” Rev Stringer said.

been looking for pedestrian access for students, but it has taken some time until a solution could be found.

He said the school gifted Council land adjoining the Molong Road in order that there was enough room to build a footpath.

“After working with our local government and Council and gifting them some of the land they’ve kindly put in a pedestrian pathway that now links us to the city,” he said.

“They put the footbridge in recently that’s in front of the fire station and that has finally connected us up.”

To celebrate, the school held a ‘Ride or Walk to School Day’ on Monday, November 18, with Member for Orange, Phil Donato joining Rev Stringer welcoming students at the school gate.

“Phil Donato, our local member was there to support the opening and we watched as dozens of kids came through the gates either on a bicycle, on foot and even on rollerskates. So it was a really exciting time,” Rev Stringer said.

Anson Street School’s Tone’s and I callout

At the end of term 3 this year, Anson Street SLSO Krissie-Lee Cartwright had a brilliant ideawhat if they could get Tones and I to come as their guest singer for NAIDOC week? Armed with enthusiasm and her phone, she quickly rallied the staff and students to sing and dance to “Dance Monkey” and uploaded a video to the school’s Facebook page, and called for the singer to come and visit.

It was just a little bit of fun, a highenergy activity to get everyone through to the end of term and the students embraced the challenge with the incredible performances that Anson

Street Students are well known for.

But when they returned from holidays, the staff quickly saw that their amazing video had gone viral, and so launched their Tones and I Orange/Anson Street School Facebook page and campaign to get her to visit the school. KrissyLee, along with Deputy Principal Jodie Pritchard not only tirelessly used social media to try and gain the singer’s attention, but they reached out to her management team who replied encouragingly, but assured the school that social media is the best way to attract the attention needed to ensure a visit is on the cards.

And a visit would mean so much for the school, who just love her vibe. She embodies the inclusive, personable,

full of life spirit that students at Anson Street live every day, and the children, in particular the older ones, truly love her music. The school uses music not only instead of bells throughout the day, but as in important self-regulation tool. Anson Street is the third largest specialist educational setting in the state, and caters for students from kindergarten to year 12. And the music program is loved by all.

Stage 6 student Gypsy’s eyes light up as she talks about Tones and I: “She is just the COOLEST!” she exclaims, before explaining that she’d dance with her. “I’d do the worm obviously, and there’d be some high kicks of course”.

Melanie Meers, school principal explains that having her come to the

school would be a once in a life-time opportunity for the students, as it can be challenging for children with sensory needs to attend concerts. As such, the school tries it’s hardest to find opportunities to expose their kids to experiences that they would otherwise miss out on, and they recently had Robbie Mortimer come and perform a concert at the school.

Having Tones and I attend the school would be akin to Santa visiting, which is something that everyone (even the older teenagers) love! The principal’s parting message to Tones and I is “Come to the best school in New South Wales, because you will never, ever forget the experience. You will fall in love, and your heart will be full”. We agree!

Spring has officially arrived in the Central West, and the local orchards are bursting with perfect fruit. If you’re looking for a family-friendly outing, you can’t go past a visit to a farm to pick your own fruit—and right now, cherries are in season, running through until Christmas.

It’s the ideal day out for families, couples seeking a little adventure, or anyone in between. All you need is a hat, sunscreen, comfy shoes, a reminder of why you moved to the country,

and a camera to capture some Instaworthy shots that will make your city friends jealous—or maybe inspire them to visit and experience country life for themselves.

We sent Orange City Life’s Emily Thompson and her long-suffering family to Thornbrook Orchard to check it out.

We wandered through the peach trees, which are just about ripe and have an intoxicating scent, and made our way to the rows of cherry trees. The best part?

The kids quickly became expert pickers with minimal guidance and were so proud of their efforts. In less than half

an hour, we filled three buckets with perfect, dark cherries that taste nothing like the refrigerated, store-bought kind.

A quick stop at the farm shop to have our bounty weighed—and at just $8 per kilo, the cherries are a bargain. Plus, eftpos is available for convenience. We all had a fantastic day, and even the teenager enjoyed herself. Now, the only question left is how to artfully arrange those cherries in school lunchboxes for a little extra social media cred!

Thornbrook Orchard is located at 39 Nashdale Lane and is open from 9 AM to 4 PM for the rest of cherry season.

If you’re like most people, you dream of one day being able to afford to retire comfortably. Most people never get there. They retire, but not with the lifestyle they hoped for or deserve. And in most cases, this comes down to one simple reason… they didn’t plan for their retirement.

How confident are you that your retirement savings are invested the way they should be and/or that you’re not getting ripped off with fees?

How confident are you that you’re on the right track for the retirement you are hoping for?

These are questions you can keep ignoring until it’s too late, or you can take control of your future from this point forward. Everyone’s idea of retirement is unique.

TALK MONEY

FREE EVENT: RETIRE IN STYLE

– MONDAY 25 NOVEMBER

The type of retirement you’re looking forward to is all about you and that means retirement is about a lot more than money.

In saying that, money is a vital element! How much you have in retirement savings, how you choose to invest those savings, the fees you pay and how much you spend each year are going to determine how long your retirement savings will last.

And the biggest fear of retirees… by a mile… is the fear of running out of money. Therefore, it pays to know where you stand.

So, if you want to retire in the style that suits you, it’s important that you make well informed decisions about your money, both in the lead up as well as throughout your retirement.

Are you getting closer to retirement or recently retired?

If so, you’ve spent your entire working

life hoping to get to this point… the point in your life when you can afford to stop working.

You may have a problem though, and you many not even be aware of it.

I’m seeing people every week who are getting stung with high fees, invested in expensive products and have gaps in their strategies.

As a local independent financial adviser, I’m on a mission to show people in Orange how they can get more out of their retirement savings. Why is this important? Because money doesn’t buy you stuff, IT BUYS YOU CHOICES.

When it comes to how people are saving for and managing their retirement savings, many people have started thinking there has to be something better.

Orange Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations (CAPO) recently completed the Orange Aboriginal Place Based Plan (OAPBP) 2024-2034, a working document roadmap for supporting Aboriginal communities across Orange and are now seeking feedback on the current draft before the plan is finalised. This consultation period is open to all members of the community and will close Friday 20 December 2024.

“Long term planning within the Aboriginal community is not new, in fact the first 10year plan was published in 2014. What has changed over these last 10 years is the growth in the organisations and services now being provided” says Alivya Powell, Chief Executive Officer & Founder at Wambinya Enterprise, stakeholder in the consultation process.

Every six months, CAPO will bring community

members, government agencies, and other partners to check progress, discuss what’s working, and identify areas for improvement. These regular check-ins help keep the plan flexible and agile to new community needs and opportunities. Through this ongoing review, CAPO will gather new ideas, share what they’re learning, and make changes to strengthen outcomes in education, health, jobs, and cultural projects.

The Plan has been developed in partnership with range of diverse organisations including the Orange City Council (OCC), Orange United Sports Club (OUSC), TAFE NSW, Charles Sturt University (CSU), and the Orange Aboriginal Women’s Group. With these partners and others, CAPO are committed to building a plan that reflects the voices and hopes of the community.

THE GOOD ENOUGH PARENT

with EMILY THOMPSON

Confessions

I recently had a few drinks with friends and after we’d thoroughly discussed which Hemsworth brother we’d leave our husbands for, the topic of conversation turned to “failings”. Now, any parent who gets out of bed in the morning is absolutely winning, and the ones who don’t are also winning and I hope they are getting the help they need. Nobody ever warned me that parenting was the absolute best thing you’d ever do while also losing so much of yourself and your sleep in the process and simultaneously dealing with the infuriating and inexplicable fact that your kitchen cabinet doors are always open, no matter how many times you close them. But still, not doing it all can lead to feelings of inadequacy. So if you need to feel better about your parenting, read on. Here is my list of current parenting confessions.

Firstly, I spelled confessions incorrectly. Special shout-out to autocorrect and our editorial and proofreading staff. I then got distracted and listened to “Best of You” by the Foo Fighters, googled where Dave Grohl’s marriage is currently at, and did a BuzzFeed quiz about whether or not I have ADHD, all before writing the first paragraph. So, I’m not exactly smashing work at the moment. It’s late in the year and I’m tired.

Speaking of late in the year, it’s week something (4?5?) of term four, and it’s time to admit that I still don’t know which class Miss 10 is in. She’s in year 4, but all the classes are named after Australian animals, and I can’t retain that information. She’s a type of bird, I think, and that’s as close as I’m getting to an answer at this point. I’m assuming she’s in 3/4 Cassowary,

given her attitude, but that seems unlikely.

I’m completely unprepared for Christmas. I haven’t planned, bought or thought of a single thing. I spent last Christmas in ICU very unwell, and I might have some residual feelings about this that’s preventing me from thinking about this year. I might also just be end of year tired. The good news is hubby has stepped up in a big way, and almost everyone in the family is bought for. The bad news is that most of his shopping seems to have been at a place called “golf box” so I don’t know that I’m getting my favourite Meeraboo strawberry champagne candle this year.

I don’t know when presentation day is for either of the kids, and I won’t be going. They’ve both done amazingly well this year and their efforts will

be recognised, but I don’t have it in me. Don’t send in hate mail, however, because hubby ALWAYS goes to school assemblies, he’s much better at school stuff. One parent is enough. I don’t know what’s for dinner… Tonight, or at any point in the future. There’s duck in the fridge, so duck salad if I’m being lazy, Peking duck if I can be bothered making crepes, but most likely cereal. I did get a box of Crunchy Nut on sale last week so Miss 10 will be thrilled.

A few weeks ago someone sent in a “thumbs up” for me. I get these fairly regularly, and I secretly love them so very much, but this one said that I was more than good enough, and I cried. Thank you so, so much for your kind words, sometimes we all need reassurance that we’re doing okay xxx

Newmont Cadia mine reached a historic milestone this month, producing its 15 millionth ounce of gold from the site since it commenced operations back in 1998.

That is equivalent to filling almost two Caterpillar 793C Haul Trucks of gold (one of which is pictured on this page), making components for 12.5 billion smartphones or 75 million wedding rings.

And the copper Cadia produced during this time is enough to have helped power approximately 19 million Australian households through electrical wiring, pipes and appliances, based on the average family home containing 90 kilograms of copper.

Cadia’s General Manager, Tom Lukeman, said they are proud to have achieved this momentous milestone –producing 15 million ounces of gold from three operating mines, one open cut and

Cadia mines its 15 millionth ounce of gold

two underground.

“Cadia is a unique mine site. It is home to one of the largest gold and copper deposits in the world, and over its lifetime has been successful in delivering essential metals on a global scale,” Mr Lukeman said

“I would like to recognise the ongoing support and collaboration of the local community, who have helped grow the next generation of our workforce… It is the people that make our operation

special. We will share this celebration with those who made it possible across our site and community.”

Cadia’s operation provides employment for around 2,000 people across the central west, with approximately 85 per cent of their workforce living locally.

According to the company’s latest annual 18-month report (July 2022 to December 2023), Cadia invested almost $6 million into community infrastructure and programs.

Eat Spanish, founded by local chef and former OC Life columnist Ruben Lopez Mesa, has won the prestigious Malaspina Award for the organisation’s efforts to create cultural bridges between Spain and Australia.

The Malaspina Award is an honour bestowed by the Embassy of Spain in Australia and the Association of Spanish Researchers in Australia-Pacific (SRAP). Each year, the award is given to one individual and one organisation in recognition of the contribution they’ve made building relationships between the two countries in culture, science, research and/or technology.

“Many people tend to narrow Spanish food and culture as one scene, and as you know, we have 17 different regions. For whatever reason that has never been said in English by anyone anywhere else. So, yeah. I’m very, very happy that it happened like this.”

It has been a big year for both Ruben and the Eat Spanish organisation, which has been building a growing profile and awareness of Spanish food in Australia.

Earlier this year, Eat Spanish hosted a roundtable discussion about Spanish gastronomy at a major trade event in Sydney, and Ruben has made three guest appearances on SBS Food’s The Cook Up with Adam Liaw.

Ruben has long had a dream to see Spanish cuisine and recipes become a staple in Australian homes, something he wrote passionately about as a food columnist for this publication. The not-for-profit Eat Spanish was founded in 2018 with the same goal: to promote Spanish gastronomy and showcase Spanish chefs and foods here in Australia.

“We are living in a golden age,” he said.” Around the world, like in America [Spanish food] is going bonkers, in the UK it is going big as well, and now here in Australia. So yeah, definitely this is a golden age!”

The Malaspina Award will be presented at a ceremony at the Australian Academy of Science in Canberra on December 9.

The Malaspina Award was given in recognition of that work, particularly for Eat Spanish’s promotion of the diversity of Spanish gastronomy, culture, heritage and traditions of the different regions of Spain, while also fostering collaboration between chefs, local producers and importers of Spanish products.

Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club Vice President Linda Ogilvie said the initial ladies’ Show n Shine was created as a bit of a response to the annual Big Boys Toys Car and Truck Show held at West Orange Motors, but it looks set to continue on as an annual event.

“I have cars and I drive them and they’re registered in my name and I just felt that it was a bit one-sided that the men had Big Boys Toys, so we came up with a concept of having a ladies day car show,” Linda said, adding that since the inaugural Ladies Show n Shine in 2023, the Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club has seen an influx of new female members.

The Ladies Day Show n Shine on December 1 is open to both members and non-members, Linda said. If you have access to a classic, historic, antique, or vintage car, you are welcome to take part.

Just as all proceeds from the Big Boys Toys Car and Truck Show are donated to local cancer charity Can Assist Orange, Linda said money raised at the Show n Shine will be donated to The Orchard, the Housing Plus-operated refuge for women and children escaping domestic violence.

Getting ready for the Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club’s Ladies Day Show n Shine on December 1 areJanine Tozer, Linda Ogilvie, Daphne Clout and Marion Clout.

Ladies Day Show ‘n Shine for The Orchard

“It’s a $10 entry fee to enter your car in the show and we’ve got 10 trophy categories,” she said. You can share your car with your husband, just as long as you’re a woman driver, you can enter.”

The Show n Shine itself will get underway at 10am, but drivers are encouraged to take part in an informal street parade at 9am.

“We’re having the ladies and their cars and bikes meet at the Orange Function Centre at 8.45am for a quick drive and parade up the Orange main street before heading over to the Naylor Pavilion,”

Linda said.

Judging will take place between 10am and 12 noon, with the trophy presentation taking place at 1pm.

“It’s a gold coin donation for anyone who comes through the gates to have a look and the money’s all going to Housing Plus. We donated, I think it was about six or seven hundred dollars last year… Housing Plus raised over $500 just from selling sausage sandwiches, and it’s only going to be bigger this year,” Linda said

“I am aware that there are people from Cowra and Young coming, which is good and there’s a market with over 25 food and market stalls included this year —- so, bigger and better!”

The Ladies Day Show n Shine takes place at the Naylor Pavilion on Sunday, December 1. Market will run from 9am to 2pm with the Show n Shine commencing at 10am. For more information visit: gnooblas.com/ladiesday-all-welcome

New Funding Boost for PTSD Support in the Central West

Phil DONATO MP

State Member for Orange

ORANGE GIRL GUIDES

I joined Mental Health Minister Rose Jackson and Stephen Lawrence MLC to announce a $20,000 investment in Lifeline Central West, enhancing PTSD support across our region.

This funding will:

1 Recruit local facilitators.

2 Launch a second peer-led support group.

3 Promote services to healthcare networks.

4 Expand geographically and increase meeting frequency.

These steps will strengthen mental health outcomes and ensure essential support for those impacted by PTSD in the central west.

Celebrating 100 years of Orange Girl Guides with a special high tea at their Peisley St Hall—what an amazing milestone! Excited to see the new canoes, trailer, and carport I helped secure funding for in action at Lake Canobolas this summer! Congratulations to Yvonne "Possum" MacRae and all who have dedicated themselves to empowering young girls and women through the Girl Guides movement. Here's to another century!

I am pleased to share updates from recent sittings in the NSW Parliament, where I have been working on several key issues for our region and the state.

SUPPORTING INNOVATION IN AGRICULTURE:

I extend my gratitude to my colleague and good friend, Roy Butler MP, Chair of the Investment, Industry and Regional Development Committee, and his fellow committee members for their dedication to the inquiry into the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment (Virtual Stock Fencing) Bill 2024.

The committee’s report, tabled in the Legislative Assembly, strongly supports this forward-thinking legislation. The findings highlight the undeniable benefits of virtual fencing technology for farmers. This innovation represents a significant step forward in agricultural technology, helping farmers across NSW remain competitive in an increasingly challenging marketplace.

I am committed to progressing this bill, with the prospect of legislating this vital tool for livestock farming.

ADVOCATING FOR JUSTICE

Let’s continue to support Lifeline Central West and their vital work!

CRICKET

CRICKET - it brings Australians and communities together. Thank you and congratulations to Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak for hosting a successful Dream Cricket Gala Day at Wade Park in Orange. 130 students participated from schools across the electorate. Well done to all involved!

BIDDY PORTER'S CASE:

I recently addressed the Attorney General to request the use of ministerial discretion under Section 28 of the Coroners Act 2009 to call for an inquest into the tragic murder of 10-year-old Biddy Porter.

Following the Attorney General’s response, we now await a review and response from the State Coroner in the coming weeks. This is a critical step toward seeking answers and justice for Biddy and her family.

IMPROVED PASSENGER RAIL SERVICES FOR ORANGE:

As part of my ongoing advocacy for better transport options in our region, I led a public interest debate in the Legislative Assembly focusing on improved passenger rail services for Orange.

The active engagement from Minister Jenny Aitchison MP and her team at Transport for NSW is encouraging. Their commitment to engaging with the local community shows promise for positive outcomes. Improved rail services will benefit residents and the broader region by enhancing connectivity and economic opportunities.

ABORTION SERVICES RESTORED AT ORANGE HEALTH SERVICE:

The Premier addressed concerns regarding abortion services, an issue of significant interest to our community in Orange and the broader region.

During Question Time, the Premier confirmed that abortion services at Orange Health Service have been fully restored to previous levels, ensuring accessible and transparent reproductive healthcare for our community. This follows active discussions and advocacy around maintaining essential services in regional public hospitals.

Additionally, the NSW Government is investing $3.5 million into the Sustainable and Equitable Access to Reproductive Choices (SEARCH) Project, which focuses on improving access to affordable pregnancy terminations, particularly in rural and regional areas. This initiative has been extended for another two years, reflecting its success in supporting regional communities.

These developments underline the commitment to ensuring safe, equitable, and reliable access to reproductive healthcare across the state. Thank you for your continued engagement in advocating for these essential services in our region.

I remain dedicated to working on these and other initiatives to benefit our communities. As always, your feedback and support are invaluable as we strive to make meaningful progress for our region.

Cheers, Phil

ART REVIEW

Archibald Prize 2024 the People’s Choice in Orange

Visitors viewing Archibald Prize 2024 People’s Choice award-winning portrait of Professor Marcia Langton AO by Angus McDonald.

All of us at Orange Regional Gallery have been delighted with the response to the ‘Archibald Prize 2024’ and ‘Young Archie Central West’ exhibitions, both of which closed last weekend. The exhibitions drew audiences from the region and across Australia, with over 10,000 people visiting the exhibitions. This is the highest attendance for any exhibition in the Gallery’s nearly 40-year history.

This extraordinary touring exhibition, presented by the Art Gallery of NSW, is shown roughly every 5 years at Orange Regional Gallery. This is yet another example of the Art Gallery of NSW’s commitment to bringing high-quality exhibitions to regional audiences. And there is more to come with ‘Brett Whiteley: Inside the Studio’ scheduled for Orange in 2025.

We’re also pleased to announce that the winner of the Archibald Prize 2024 People’s Choice award in Orange is Angus McDonald’s powerful portrait of Marcia Langton AO.

It is an astonishing painting that presents distinguished

anthropologist, geographer and academic Professor Marcia Langton AO in exquisite detail, and with great presence.

Professor Langton is a descendant of the Yiman and Bidjara nations of Queensland who has been Foundation Chair of Australian Indigenous Studies at the University of Melbourne since 2000.

‘Marcia is charismatic, curious, direct and one of our deepest thinkers. She has a well of stories which she relates with razor-sharp detail and humour. At the same time, she radiates kindness and warmth,’ says McDonald.

‘I wanted to portray her as both a pivotal figure in Australian social history and someone who has lived an incredible life. I placed her just right of centre to suggest a sense of stepping away and handing the baton to a younger group of activists after a lifetime of tireless commitment. She gazes up and to the left to reflect that she has persistently followed her own path. Although she is an analytical thinker, I see her as a mystic who emanates love and wisdom.’

Archibald Prize 2024 is an Art Gallery of NSW touring exhibition.

YOUR LOCAL COUNCIL AT WORK

Residents encouraged to have their say to create new Community Strategic Plan

As Orange City Council settles into its new term, it’s time for us determine the community’s priorities for our city for the next four years.

Residents are being encouraged to share their ideas and aspirations for Orange to create the Council’s Community Strategic Plan (CSP).

A CSP is developed after every local government election to guide the Council during the next term. It is our highest-level plan and translates the community’s desired outcomes for the city into key goals.

Orange Mayor Tony Mileto said the theme for the new CSP is ‘Your Community. Your Plan.’

“The community’s input is vital in forming this plan. It’s the community’s plan,” Cr Mileto said.

“That’s why we want as many people as possible to share their thoughts and views with us. They are the foundation of the CSP and will guide Orange City Council over the next four years.”

During November and December, Orange City Council will conduct extensive consultation with the community and locals have the chance to share their thoughts, concerns, aspirations and ideas with us.

Online, people can visit YourSay Orange at https:// yoursay.orange.nsw.gov.au/ to share their ideas and like other people’s ideas, place pins on a map to show locations that matter and complete a survey.

...It’s going to be the biggest and best that you’ve ever seen Robbie Mortimer...

Hometown theatre gig a 20-year dream come true

Get ready for an unforgettable night at the Orange Civic Theatre as local country star Robbie Mortimer takes the stage for a headline show that’s been 20 years in the making.

The last twelve months have been huge for Robbie Mortimer. From performing at rodeo arenas all around Australia as the PBR’s resident artist to massive festival gigs and skyrocketing streaming numbers, Robbie ‘s heading into 2025 with a lot of momentum.

“I’ve had a massive, massive year, which has been really special… a lot of things happening going in the right direction and probably the biggest year of my career so far!” says Robbie.

“The PBR has been incredible… I’ve been contracted for the last two seasons; flying all over Australia and playing at these sold-out arenas has just been the most incredible opportunity for me!

“I’ve got about 1.5 million streams since March, which is incredible… at shows, to see people singing all these songs that I wrote and being excited for what I’m doing, it’s really special!”

On November 29, Robbie will be back in town performing at the Orange Civic Theatre, in what he says will be the most significant show of his career so far.

“The Civic Theatre show is… honestly, it’s been a 20year dream of mine,” says Robbie.

“I was saying to someone the other day that I was the Scarecrow at my Bletchington school play when I was 10 years old and I remember being on that stage and thinking, I’m going to sell this out one day.

“Twenty years later I have the opportunity to do that, so it’s a bit of a pinch-me moment! I’ve worked really, really hard to get to this position and I’m very proud of that, but the job’s not done. Now I’ve got to sell this out!”

Robbie’s headline show in Orange comes hot on the heels of the release of his latest single Good Times & Tan Lines. It’s his fifth release of the year and a feelgood summer anthem born out of an unforgettable festival experience on a Florida beach.

“Everybody was smiling, loving their life, and all gathered for the same thing, which was the love of country music. I saw a sign that said ‘Good Times & Tan Lines’... I took a photo of it and thought, I’m going to write a song about this exact feeling,” says Robbie.

“It’s a really fun, upbeat, and happy summer song and the response has been really amazing!”

Along with all his current hits, Robbie says the Orange Civic Theatre show will be a bit of a journey throughout his career, with a selection of unreleased tracks and insight into the stories behind the music

“The songs that I wrote here in my bedroom in Orange, and then songs that I have written over in Nashville with some of the world’s best-ever songwriters… I’m bringing people on the journey and showing them where I’ve been and where I’m about to go,” says Robbie.

“A good blend of storytelling and great musicianship. However, there’s always going to be that kind of highenergy country rock that you’d expect at a Robbie Mortimer show as well! “I’ve got a six-piece band with me and we’ve put so much effort into this show. It’s going to be the biggest and best that you’ve ever seen Robbie Mortimer! I’m really excited for it!”

Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to Robbie’s music, this show will be an experience not to be missed. Join Robbie Mortimer and his band for his Good Times & Tan Lines Tour at the Orange Civic Theatre, 7.30pm on Friday, November 29.

Irecently had the pleasure of hosting Senator Jacqui Lambie in Orange and the region to attend a range of different events.

On Friday night we had a terrific dinner at Orange City Bowling Club which was a night of wit, grit and leadership!

Jacqui took centre stage during the Q and A session, teeing off on many topics including cost-of-living, disability support services, environmental policy, education, healthcare and the need to support our veterans.

The big talking point of the night was the power of true Independents in Parliament, something Jacqui and I are very passionate about!

I’m a genuine and true country Independent, and I value and treasure that independence. I’m not going to be owned by anyone and that’s why I’ve been very determined to maintain my independence, both in the Parliament and out of it.

The National Party is backed by big city corporates like big tobacco and big insurance companies that caused so much misery across our region in the floods of 2022.

Climate 200 is backed by a big city billionaire in Simon Holmes a Court.

They’ve now put a Teal candidate (Kate Hook) in the field for Calare backed by their big city money, which by the time we get to the election, will probably total hundreds of thousands of dollars. But why the coyness about who you are and who’s backing you? Let’s talk frankly, it’s a de facto political party – the Teal Party. To me, that’s not true independence!

Everyone’s welcome to run for office and I believe we have an obligation to protect our environment

I

t was an hour to attend Saturday’s centenary celebrations at Orange Guide Hall, with special guest Jacqui Lambie!

To make it an even more special occasion, I presented leaders

Kathryn Anderson with her Banksia Award and Jessica Keppie with her Boronia Award! Both are very high honours in Guiding. Jess also won “Educator of the Year” at the recent Central West Mummy Awards!

A VERY WARM WELCOME TO SENATOR JACQUI LAMBIE!

We discussed how being free of major parties, big corporations and special interest groups and their big money allows us to truly represent our constituents.

A huge shoutout and thank you to the one and only Jacqui for making the trip all the way from Tasmania.

It sure was a visit to remember!

VETERAN

MEETS VETERANS!

As a proud veteran herself, Jacqui and I spent time with veterans from around the region on Saturday at the Orange Ex Services Club.

We discussed Jacqui’s time in the army as a truckie and as a military police officer, the problems veterans are facing now and

for future generations and that includes tackling issues like global warming.

But I’ve now seen all major parties like the National Party and special interest groups like Climate 200/Teal Party up close and believe me, they’re all the same.

They’re all political operators. They may wear different uniforms but they’re just different sides of the same political coin, using big money to gain and expand political power, influence and empires. Together they will spend millions campaigning for this seat.

So when you see all the slick ads on TV and social media – ask yourself: where’s the money coming from? And what strings are attached? And keep in mind that slick ads are no substitute for hard work on the ground. As the Beatles famously sang, money doesn't always buy you love!

To my way of thinking, we need more true Independents in parliament that aren’t going to be wholly owned subsidiaries of anyone.

As the only true country Independent in the race, I know I won’t be.

Congratulations to you both.

Guiding is all about fun, friendship, and developing skills and values that last a lifetime.

Congratulations to Yvonne MacRae (Possum) and everyone who has contributed to the wonderful success of Orange Girl Guides!

As Girl Guides Australia’s founder, Betty Clay once said, “A girl can do anything she sets her mind to”.

Here’s to another century of empowering women!

how we can best support them.

I first met Jacqui when I was the Minister for Veterans Affairs and she’s been a fierce advocate for veterans ever since she first set foot in Canberra.

We share a passion for helping veterans and our stance on successive governments not doing enough to support them, like clearing the back log of veterans' compensation claims. As Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, I threatened to resign my cabinet ministry because veterans were not being properly funded. The government coughed up the money.

It was a pleasure to have Jacqui in Orange to hear the stories of our local veterans.

National Party Upper House parliamentarian Sam Farraway should resign from his New South Wales Parliamentary position immediately.

Campaigning for a federal seat while you’re being paid $242,716 a year ($20,226 per month) by the New South Wales taxpayer has always been totally untenable.

It saves the National Party having to pay him a salary while he’s on the campaign trail but amounts to a major political party gaming the system.

The situation turned farcical recently when at a press conference Mr Farraway denied he was campaigning but at the same press conference, the Leader of the Nationals, David Littleproud confirmed they were.

Mr Farraway originally said that he would resign from the New South Wales Parliament when the Prime Minister called an election.

By now saying he’ll give his final speech in November, Mr Farraway has admitted that

campaigning for a federal seat while on the NSW taxpayer’s payroll, is wrong.

There is no reason to delay. He should resign immediately. No ifs, no buts.

Mr Farraway’s statement doesn’t actually name a resignation date.

By delaying his resignation until the 9th December he gets paid almost another $41,000 and the money train keeps delivering him another $4,654 each and every week until he finally goes.

Not only should Mr Farraway resign now, but the National Party should repay to the New South Wales Parliament the tens of thousands of dollars it has cost-shifted onto the New South Wales taxpayer by letting Mr Farraway campaign for a federal seat while being paid to do a fulltime job for the people of this state.

Under the National Party of old, this would never have been allowed to happen. Those days are long gone.

Fifty Years of Service

At the October meeting of Orange Evening VIEW Club, Glenys Grimmet was awarded a Service Pin for 50 years of service to VIEW Clubs, Australia and The Smith family.

Glenys came to Orange as a member of Mudgee VIEW Club and found there was a Day VIEW Club in Orange but no evening club for working women to attend.

In 1981, with her friend, Jenny Taylor, Glenys instigated an Evening View Club. At a later date she was also crucial in the opening of Mountain Evening VIEW.

During those fifty years of membership, Glenys has held the positions of President of the local club, National Councillor and National Vice President, travelling all over Australia to further the work of VIEW and The Smith family.

Over the years, the three clubs have melded into just the Evening club – now 44 years in existence, still working for The Smith Family, helping to ease children and families out of poverty through their Learning for Life programme in schools.

BIKE DAY AT OPS

Orange Public School Years 3–6 students enjoyed a morning ride on Friday, November 15, for the annual Bike Day excursion. While some chose a more leisurely ride around Moulder Park, the more adventurous undertook a 28-kilometre route out to Gosling Creek, via Shiralee, to Sir Jack Brabham Park and back again.

Colour City Dragons win women’s 200m at Western Region Dragon Boat Regatta

Orange’s Colour City Dragons Boat Club has marked hosting the Western Region Dragon Boat Regatta at Lake Canobolas, Orange on Sunday, November 3 with a win in the women’s 200-metre event.

The Western Region Boat Regatta attracts teams from across the area’s boundaries.

For dragon boat racing, the Western Region extends south to Wagga Wagga, west to Dubbo, north to Narrabri and east to the Blue Mountains and also includes clubs from Mudgee, Orange, Bathurst, Parkes and Forbes.

Sydney clubs the Pacific Dragons and Sydney Tsunami also attended the Western Region event held in Orange.

Races held included the women’s and men’s 200m, the mixed 200m and the popular 100m dash for cash and the DA (Dragons Abreast) challenge.

Hosts the Colour City Dragons won the women’s 200m event.

Sydney’s Pacific Dragons had three wins Pacific Dragons (men’s 200m, mixed 200m and 100m dash for cash).

The DA Penrith team won the 200m DA (Dragons Abreast) Challenge.

Teams compete in Dragon Boats, which are large canoe-like vessels fitted with ornately carved dragon’s heads and tails.

Teams have as many as 20 paddlers and a drummer and a sweep.

The drummer is the individual keeping the rhythm and pace for the team and the sweep steers the boat.

Dragon Boat Racing is supposed to have begun more than 2000 years ago on the banks of the lifesustaining rivers in the valleys of southern China as a fertility ritual thought to bring good luck to the coming crop season.

Its origins at Orange stem from the Dragons Abreast group

Vipers president sees positives despite two close grand final losses in WWRL deciders

Vipers president Martin Power could see plenty of positives despite two close Western Women’s Rugby League grand finals losses at Ann Ashwood Park in Bathurst on Saturday, November 16.

The Wayne Hill-coached Vipers’ under-14s side went down to Wiradjuri Goannas 26-14 while the Vipers’ under16s, coached by Anthony Simmons, lost 16-12 to Lachlan District.

In a slice of good news on the day, Vipers’ under-18s halfback Georgie Barrett was named best and fairest for the Western Women’s Rugby League in that competition.

Power said the WWRL under-14s decider was a quality affair where late mistakes hurt Vipers.

Goannas prop Nakita Volivakarua was named player of the grand final and best and fairest for the under-14s competition.

Power said fullback April Gardiner, Darcey Biddle (prop) and Mackenzie Thornberry-Ruddy (hooker) were three of Vipers’ best in the under-14s side.

“It blew out a little bit at the end,” Power said of the under-14s grand final.

“It was a good game to watch

“We did score the first few tries and looked in control, but mistakes hurt both sides. Goannas made less mistakes later in the game and were able to get in front.

“The girls have had a good season.”

The under-16s contest was even closer with both sides scoring three tries.

Grace Macgregor, the Lachlan five-eighth, was named best and fairest on grand final day and also player of the competition in that grade.

of women who were battling breast cancer and were seeking an alternate sport they could compete in.

Now, the Colour City Dragons Boat Club in Orange has almost 70 members, ranging in age from 11 up to 80 years.

June Bennett, a member of Colour City Dragons Boat Club and Western Region Dragon Boat Regatta co-ordinator, said the 2024 event was a great success.

“Lake Canobolas looked spectacular and we had a lot of positive feedback,” June said.

Lake Canobolas had last hosted the event in 2022.

The Western Region Dragon Boat Regatta switches venues each year and is also held at Cudgegong Waters near Mudgee, the 2023 venue, as well at Lake Albert in Wagga Wagga and Bathurst’s Ben Chifley Dam.

Orange currently has two dragon boat clubs – the Colour City Dragons Boat Club and Pinnacle Dragons Orange Boat Club.

Juliette Whyburn (prop), Zahli Millsteed (lock) and fiveeighth Daisy Bohringer were three of Vipers’ best.

“It was another really good game, hard and fast,” Power reported.

“It was one I thought our girls would win … but Lachlan played well, good luck to them.

“It was tit-for-tat, there was nothing between both sides, a really good battle between two evenly-matched teams.

In the other WWRL grand finals played on Saturday, Panorama Platypi made it four straight open women’s premierships when they defeated Goannas 32-18.

In under-18s, Goannas defeated Panorama 28-22 and in the under-12s Lachlan District defeated Panorama 10-8.

Power concluded by stating while it’s nice to win grand finals, having four sides in the semi-finals and around 120 registered players in total shows the Vipers club continues to move forward.

“It was another good season … it’s not all about results, we have a lot of girls playing (rugby league) which is fantastic,” Power said.

Western Women’s under-14s grand final: Goannas 26 (Nakita Volivakarua 2, Markyhia Barwick, Sianna Hull, Maleigha Jeffries, Martha Uluivuya tries; Torah Brien goal) defeated Vipers 14 (April Gardiner, Grace Goodlock, Azahra Lyden tries; Tessa Hill goal)

Western Women’s under-16s grand final: Lachlan District 16 (Joan Carolan, Kailei Cole, Ashlee Trim tries; Ruby Jones 2 goals) defeated Vipers 12 (Jemma Jones 2, Jayanna Dixon tries)

Friday 100 club sellers. Jean Kennedy and Gail Pringle.

All our age groups were back at the pool on Sunday making waves of the chlorinated kind.

The Nemos, our youngest stars, headed to the sandy dunes of the volleyball courts. The perfect place to warm up all their muscles before jumping into some flag races, duck dive practice, and wading and floating in the pool to finish up. All skills that work towards keeping them safe in the water.

The sizzling Crabs and Seahorses who amass to over fifty, were out in abundance showing their curiosity and snappy inquisitiveness. They rose to the challenge of learning a new language. The silent language of hand signals that lifesavers use to communicate when performing rescues. Well done to you all and what a hoot! They could’ve been mistaken for a Flash Mob doing the YMCA dance.

The dazzling Dolphins headed straight into the water, head first practising their diving entries into the murky unknown shallows of any body of water that they may come across. These nippers are learning about safe entry and exit from not only the waves and shifting sands of the ocean but the slippery unstable slopes of creeks, rivers, dams, and lakes, with their woody hazards that may lurk below their shimmering surface appeal.

The bonza Stingray and Shark groups are the upcoming Surf Rescue Certificate candidates and their swim ability is paramount so practice is key. As well as the usual suspects for swim strokes they practised an aptly named Survival Stroke. Then it was buddying up with a partner to be a patient and rescuer. It takes many hours of training to master the rescue skills and equipment needed to bring a conscious or unconscious patient to land safely. Awesome work nippers, it’s hard yakka, but you’ve got it in the bag… or in the tube!

Their first communion

These three young girls were among many children at St Mary’s School in 1967 who attended their first communion. A special event for seven or eight-year-olds, it is one of the three sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church. An added bonus for participants after the ceremony was afternoon tea with plenty of cakes and soft drinks.

Photo courtesy of the CWD Negative Collection, Orange & District Historical Society. The society holds a working day each Wednesday from 10.30am to 4pm, with a lunch break from 12.30-1.30pm, at 148 March Street. Volunteers are available to answer historical inquiries from the public at that time.

CROSS purposes

WITH HIDE AND SEEK

WITH TABATHA REED

THUMBS UP to the Orange City Council water crew, who very promptly and efficiently replaced a broken pipe at my metre.

How fun is a good old-fashioned game of hide and seek? I remember the exhilaration of playing as a kid, when, after what seemed like hours of searching, the person hiding was finally found, and the adventure would start again.

As fun as it is to play hide and seek, sometimes people might think that God hides. But God wants you to find him! In the Bible – Psalm 19 tells us “The heavens declare the glory of God and the expanse proclaims the works of his hands”. God’s creation should inspire us to seek him, knowing that he is not far from us (Acts 17:27). The Bible also tells us that we can know God personally, in the person of Jesus.

Maybe you’re hiding? There are many reasons why we avoid seeking God, but be encouraged, even though all of us have ignored God, God sent Jesus into this world to reconcile us back to him. So that we can know him, love him and live with him as our Heavenly Father. Why not this week, seek God, find him in the Bible. He knows you, he loves you and he wants you to find him.

THUMBS UP to Nathan and Arrow at Officeworks for their help and service when we were buying a printer this week!

THUMBS UP to Steven (Stephen) in the IT section of Officeworks who helped me out of a tight spot with my broken Mac charger. Thanks!

THUMB DOWN to the traffic management crews who erect unnecessary roadwork and speed limit signs (like the ones on Cadia Road recently, which were in place for two weeks with not a single worker, shovel or piece of road plant ever appearing). Who authorises this?

THUMBS UP to Dr Salvador for showing genuine care and concern for this patient. Even following up with calls after hours while we were on the Central Coast. It is truly appreciated!

THUMBS UP and thanks to the Cabonne Council workers who had the unpleasant task of cleaning up the household rubbish dumped beside the Lower Lewis Ponds Road. Shame that the culprit wasn’t identified and fined.

THUMBS UP to the Great Western Hotel Orange. To Mel, Treena, Nathan and Erin. You guys are doing an awesome job… place looks amazing, comfy, clean and amazing staff that makes the place.

THUMBS UP to the amazing staff at Betta In Orange, great customer service for electrical goods and follow up. Your kindness and help is so much appreciated, Great business service and reinforces customer confidence.

THUMBS UP to the honest person who found my son’s wallet at Phillip Shaw Winery and handed it into the police station. Thank you, Thank you! So greatly appreciated.

THUMBS UP to the ZONTA women’s club assembling birthing kits for women in the developing world.
