Hope everything’s going well for you in the countdown to Christmas. I think it may be going to get a bit hectic during these last few weeks so it’s worth encouraging everyone to be aware of this and to show some patience and understanding as you drive around a very busy shopping area or find yourself bailed up at a checkout somewhere.

I hope you enjoy this week’s issue, my team has done their usual top notch job and compiled another very interesting and entertaining paper full of great reading, great photos and all our popular regular features.

It’s time again for a bit of Christmas fun in our What’s in the Box competition. We have a really nifty prize to give away to one lucky reader and you can find out how to enter on page 47. Last time it was a Weber BBQ, what will it be this year?

Take off! for Orange Airport 200 new jobs and more than $177 million in investment over the next five years – plus benefits for generations to come —is projected to come from a $18.9 million Orange Airport expansion.

Business opportunities, reducing the tyranny of distance between country and city and the possibility of a second airline flying into orange are just some of what’s to come from not only the new airport terminal being officially opened, but what the whole

project will offer. the terminal was officially opened last Friday by Federal member for Calare John Cobb, State member for orange Andrew Gee, orange mayor John Davis and Cadia Valley operations General manager tony mcPaul after more than a year of construction.

All dignitaries said the full airport update is not only for present but for future growth also. member for orange Andrew Gee said orange Airport has reclaimed its “mantle as a leader in regional aviation”.

“People flying in before could’ve been mistaken that we weren’t

leaders in regional aviation because things were looking a little bit shabby, but all those days are over now,” mr Gee said. he predicted jobs which could be created by having a modernised airport will be in key areas of mining, health, education and agriculture, as well as aviation. “there are doctors flying into orange every day in a variety of fields and an airport expansion like this is only going to make it easier for them to get here and that’s the wonderful thing about this project, it bridges the great divide between the city and the country,” mr Gee said. the project was jointly funded

by the Federal Government committing $4.9 million through the Regional Development Australia Fund, orange City Council investing $10.2 million, Cadia Valley operations contributing $2.5 million and the State Government providing $1.27 million.

Cadia Valley operations General manager tony mcPaul said the airport is a vital transportation portal for mining professionals. he added the expansion and meeting room will help with Cadia’s next phase of mining.

“2014 has been an interesting and exciting year for Cadia,” mr mcPaul said.

“We’ve been able to develop our Cadia Research Project and that’s set us up in very good stead to be a low cost producer into the future, which should mean we can prosper in any sort of gold price conditions.” mr mcPaul added that the building of Cadia east will finish by the end of march 2015; with development to continue through 2015 and early 2016. “then it’s just a steady state of consistent operations,” he said.

Works to finish off the Airport project, including an extension to the main runway and airplane taxiways, are expected to be finished by April 2015.

Running a small business in this day and age is an extremely challenging thing to do but people like me seem to believe there is something noble in serving and employing people.

Despite the frustrations and challenges along the way, something seems to get into your blood which drives you.

I’m sure that’s true in my case.

There are however times when it really hurts to be an employer.

Last week I had to let one of my long serving employees go. The official description is that I made him redundant but what really happened was that a long and profitable relationship between friends came to an abrupt end.

I have to tell you it hurt like crazy but unfortunately, having to take very unpalatable steps like this from time to time is part of the job description.

My employee was held in very high regard for the 5 years plus he was with us and had done absolutely nothing to deserve this fate, which made it all the harder.

The truth of the matter is that our business, like so many in the media at this time, is suffering a downturn in advertising revenue.

Our newspaper relies totally on advertising sales revenue to pay the bills and I’ve said before that it costs over $20,000 a week to keep our doors open and our 14 strong staff employed. You can

appreciate then, that if our advertising sales fall short of what we need each week by one or two thousand dollars, it wouldn’t be long before we’re tens of thousands behind the 8 ball.

Again, like many small business owners when faced with a similar situation, I held off for several months in the hope that we could generate the necessary sales to keep my whole staff employed but sadly, it hasn’t happened. It appeared that despite our best efforts, we could not lift our income sufficiently to sustain the staff and workplace lifestyle we have previously enjoyed, so the only alternative was for me to look at areas where we could trim expenses. One of these areas was our level of staffing, hence the redundancy.

Let me say here and now that our business is travelling along quite well but we have incurred some unusual losses over recent months and I simply had to take steps to stop that trend. This is not an unusual situation for small business owners to face and when it does happen, some form of action is required.

In my case, it meant letting one of my most valued staff members go, purely for the greater good of keeping the business profitable and the other 13 employees in work.

There’s a lot of deserved praise for three-time Paralympic Gold medalist Kurt Fearnley’s public achievements.

Fearnley told Orange City Life, growing up in the Central West was what gave him the strength and determination to take on life’s marathons. It’s a central theme in his new memoir ‘Pushing the Limits’.

Convoy a success CHRIS BENNETTS A few weeks back, OC Life introduced you to the Harvey’s, Bob, Dot, Ross and Tammy.

They were heading down South for the 10th annual running of the Camp Quality Convoy.

Well after coming back and being part of the parade, Ross said he can’t wait to get involved again next year. And he hopes to get many other local businesses involved.

“It was incredible, people line the streets waving and supporting the convoy. I had no idea it was so big. The line of truck’s and bikes was 40 k’s long.

“We’ll definitely be going back each year.” said Ross.

The most recent Convoy saw 791 trucks and 1200 motorbikes make the 70km trek from Illawarra to the Croome Road Sporting Complex in Albion Park.

In ten short years, $5,952,921.30 has been raised through the Convoy. An incredible amount.

Over 10,000 people attended the Albion Park Complex where a family fun-day and live entertainment kept them busy. Money raised this year totaled $1,539,907 with proceeds going to Camp Quality Illawarra.

Kurt Fearnley’s won the new york, london and Chicago marathons many times. He’s crawled the Kokoda track and the Great Wall of China. He’s sailed the sydney to Hobart. He’s also a Dad, husband, teacher and passionate charity supporter. and now he’s an author.

Kurt grew up in the village of Carcoar, born without the lower part of his spine.

“Most kids learn how to crawl and then they learn walk,” Kurt writes in ‘Pushing the limits’.

“I learned how to crawl and then how to master it.”

He told Orange City life, ‘I Can Jump Puddles’ by alan Marshall was a big inspiration on him and his mum Jackie. the book is part of a three-part autobiography by alan, who had polio, but didn’t let that stop him living his life in regional australia.

“Mum said ‘If he can jump puddles, then why can’t I?’ … that was about making sure that I lived my life,” Kurt said. “and to raise me back in the bush,

Kurt comes back to his hometown area next week; to the people he said inspire not only many of the stories he tells in the book, but those who made him so resilient and led him on the path to glory.

“My story is going to be forever linked with the Central West; with Carcoar, Orange, Bathurst, Blayney and Cowra,” he said. “that kind of created me and my family there. and the communities there, they’re also a big part of my story so everyone within that group is part of the whole thing and part of the book.” after his book tour wraps up – which brings him to Orange next thursday - Kurt’s focus will be on the 2016 rio Paralympics. “you never know what’s going to pop up though,” he said.

“I never thought Kokoda would happen 12 months before it did and I never imagined sydney to Hobart would’ve happened six months before it did. I kind of think ‘I’ll see what happens’ but I do know that I’ll be there in rio and a lot of energy will be put into that.”

“I know who I am. I know I’m strong and resilient. and I know I love the life that I’ve been given that I’ll run with every opportunity that comes by. I know that,” he said.

He added it’s not all about the podium glory, but embracing opportunity. “there’s always a degree of risk with everything in life. you try to limit that risk as much as possible and then make a decision,” he said.

“It’s not something that you think ‘I don’t really want to take on the out-of-theworld things, I just want to.’”

‘Pushing the limits’ was released in late October, just before Kurt won another new york marathon. since returning home, he’s been travelling the country to launch the book.

There is a new graduate at Mulberry Lane Vet Clinic – and we’re not just talking about the latest group of cute puppies to complete their Puppy training classes!. Our new grad is Practice Manager Jenna , who has recently completed her Cert 4 in Companion Animal services delivered by the Delta Society of Australia. This is a nationally recognised course and makes Jenna only the second qualified Delta trainer in the Orange district.

The Delta Society is the national leader in animal assisted therapies and it offers a positive, reward-based approach to companion animal training. Jenna is now qualified to design and conduct puppy and adult dog training classes, as well as give one on one behavioural consults for dog owners. The course took nearly 2 years to complete and involves over 600 hours of written assignments, as well as video and practical assessments done by distance Ed. As part of the course, Jenna also had to attend weekend seminars, and a 6 day practical and theory workshop in Sydney – all of this as well as planning a wedding, renovating a house and running a busy vet clinic!! .

Summer is a time when many people think about bringing a new pup into the family. It can be helpful to talk to experienced vet nurses like Jenna and Annika even before your new pup arrives so that the whole family is prepared and you can give your new addition the best start in life. Early health assessments, vaccinations and check ups are essential, and so are puppy classes where young dogs are taught the basics of good doggy manners. Having new experiences in a gentle and controlled environment can help prevent unwanted dog behaviour later in life.

And its not only puppies who need their vaccinations. If you are thinking about taking your lucky dog on holiday, then don’t forget that a trip to the coast means a risk of ticks. Check your dog daily, and make sure they have tick prevention treatment such as Advantix, Frontline or a Tick preventic collar. If your dog or cat is staying in boarding kennels then you will need to show their up to date vaccination certificate.

A nasty strain of the deadly dog illness Parvovirus is in Orange, so vaccinations for all puppies and adult dogs are extra important.

Operation Christmas Child Success

Don’t be silly, get a taxi The Petbarn team are the lucky winners of a $500 rebate for their Christmas party from Orange City Council thanks to taking part in a road safety program aimed at promoting healthy habits this holiday season.

Over 1,000 disadvantaged Vietnamese children will have a happier Christmas thanks to the work of Samaritan’s Purse volunteers, as part of their annual Operation Christmas Child (OCC) project and community support.

ASHLEA PRITCHARD OVeR 40 VOLuNTeeRS came together for monthly working bees at the Christian Ministry Centre to coordinate donations from throughout the region and compile gifts into shoeboxes for families who will be lacking at Christmas.

School supplies, clothes, toys and personal hygiene items are included in the boxes to help them prosper.

OCC Regional Coordinator for Orange and District, Robyn Hicks said 1,019 shoebox gifts were sent to Vietnam as part of this year’s effort.

The boxes were sent to Sydney for sorting towards the end of last month.

“Dwyer’s Transport once again transported the shoeboxes to Sydney for free. A big thank you to them,” Mrs Hicks said.

“Imagine the smiles of the children.”

The boxes were sent with support from communities in Orange, Blayney, Cargo, Cudal, Manildra, Millthorpe and Molong.

Mrs Hicks thanked all who have generously helped. She also extended a very big thank-you to easy Living shoes, Blue Illusion and Ziera shoes staff who kept shoeboxes, and the Classic Country Rose team who kept bigger boxes to pack all the

shoeboxes into.

Mrs Hicks saw the success of the program directly when she travelled to Vietnam to see the presents handed out earlier this year.

She travelled there with another dedicated volunteer Jenny Abbott who also went to Vietnam to see Samaritan’s Purse gifts passed out. “[We] saw first-hand the delight these shoeboxes brought to the children, their school and community,” said Mrs Hicks.

Both Jenny and Robyn were able to help out the sorting and checking of shoebox gifts in Sydney last month before they were sent via sea to Vietnam.

Statistics show too many lives are lost – or are negatively affected – every festive season due to drink driving.

Recent NSW Police figures showed Orange was ranked third behind Byron Bay and Coffs Harbour for drink-driving.

Orange City Council have been encouraging businesses to get behind their ‘Leave the Car at home: Make your Plan B, a Taxi ride home’ this year and last; with seeming success.

Before the competition winners for the $500 was drawn, over 50 local businesses had entered the competition; which Road Safety Officer Andrea Hamilton–Vaughan said is a positive sign for the region.

“We’ve had a wonderful response this year right

across the board from real estate agents, to government agency, to small, not-for-profit organisations and bigger companies,” Ms HamiltonVaughan said.

She explained this as an “intervention” that’s needed over the holidays due to various reasons.

“Christmas time is a high risk time on the roads because of a number of factors,” Ms Hamilton-Vaughan said.

“One, there’s a maximum of road traffic; two, people have a lot on their minds and they’re easily distracted; and three, we have a lot of people going out and enjoying themselves.”

She said work parties are a great incentive to thank staff for working hard all year, and though enjoyable, should still be safe.

ELECTROLUX UPDATE

Training for Electrolux workers, including contractors at the plant, is continuing at a strong pace as the major wind-down of the plant drawers closer.

420 one-on-one interviews have now been completed with 46 of those employees choosing to retire when the plant shuts down.

406 workers at the factory have formally requested training and in September this year there were 274 workers enrolled in courses or training.

This comprehensive training program is being backed by the NSW Government through State Training Services and TAFE Western.

The courses conducted have included dual diplomas and courses in aged care, hospitality, front-line management, project management, earth works, transport, retail and others. Training is also occurring in the factory, which makes it easily accessible to employees.

Subsidised training places have been made available by the NSW Government equally to both Electrolux workers and contracted workers at the factory.

I’m very pleased that so far 17 permanent and casual staff from TT Logistics have either completed, or are nearing completion, training courses ranging from Diplomas in Management, and Diplomas In Work, Health and Safety to Certificate IV in Work, Health and Safety.

On the 27 March this year, on the floor of the NSW Parliament, I called on TT Logistics (a subsidiary of Toyota) to ensure that its

workers received the same access to training that was being offered to Electrolux workers.”

The speech contained the following passage: “… over the next few weeks TAFE Western will go into the factory to tailor a retraining program to every worker who wants one. It will take many weeks but this important work is beginning. In fact, it is being launched tomorrow. I am today also making a request of TT Logistics Australasia. I ask that the company ensure that any of its workers who will be unemployed when the plant closes be included in this process. I also ask the company to commit to funding the retraining of its contracted workers. TT Logistics is part of the Toyota group of companies and I do not think that is too much to ask of a company with its connections.”

I also personally wrote to the company requesting that they assist their employees to participate in the program on an equal footing with Electrolux workers.

I’m very happy that since I made those requests, TT Logistics have supported their workers in the same way Electrolux has.

To date, the NSW Government has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in the re-training program and I’m very grateful to Mark O’Kane, the factory manager for making it his personal mission to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible for workers.

The Electrolux workers and contractors are part of our community, and we want as many of them as possible to continue living and working in Orange and its surrounding districts.

ORANGE AIRPORT OPENING

SAVING GLENROI UPDATE Last Saturday the Saving Glenroi Group held the first of its activity days at Eyde Park in Kurim Avenue. It was an outstanding success.

The kids had a wonderful time (particularly the ones doing the big cricket hits which I had to chase!) and there was a very strong turnout from local residents.

Gerald Power from Family and Community Services (FACS) cooked up a storm on the barbie and there was plenty of help from Saving Glenroi Group members, local parents and other organisations such as CareWest.

Congratulations to everyone who helped out or supported the event (one FACS officer, Darren Smith, even travelled from Dubbo). Community spirit is definitely alive and well in Glenroi.

GOSLING CREEK AGED CARE FACILITY TOUR

This week I was given the opportunity to tour the Gosling Creek Aged Care Facility on Forest Road. The development will be able to accommodate 77 residents when it opens on the 27 January next year.

It was great to see the wonderful facilities which includes four wings of accommodation, multiple dining rooms, an in-house coffee shop, hairdressing salon and consulting rooms for visiting doctors.

After more than a year of construction the new terminal at the Orange Airport was officially opened last Friday.

Whilst waiting, I noticed the wall of newspaper clippings management had put up for the customers viewing pleasure.

The clippings can only be described as a ‘Community Wall’ and all had a common theme; good news about people doing good things in our community.

I decided I needed to know more.

I sat down with owner Rodney Soo and his son Sebastian to find out the inspiration behind “the wall’.

Rodney tells me that after opening in 2012 he and his wife decided to start the wall as a way to both recognise people behind the story; embrace what they are doing or have achieved, but also as a way as honouring Rodney’s father who owned Hang Sings in Blayney for many years. It was Rodney’s dad that was the inspiration behind the wall.

“Dad used to do a similar thing at Hang Sings, on a smaller scale, and he always got behind the community by way of sponsorship as well” Rodney said.

“I leave the articles on the wall for 12 months before they get replaced. As the business started to take off, more and more articles went up and we got busier

and busier.”

Rodney even uses the wall as a type of dating service.

“I get so many people come in and say ‘I used to go out with him/her’- I never know whether to laugh or cry when that happens” he laughed.

“It’s just our way of showcasing the good that is being done in Orange, when you read these articles, you discover how much work goes on behind the scenes to make what these people do a success.”

Rodney’s an easy guy to chat with; he floats around chatting with his many

customers, easily fitting in with every demographic that come in to enjoy his teams fare.

Rodney has a lot of regulars that he greets like long lost friends whenever they come in, they in turn greet him just as warmly.

And to top it all off the burger was excellent!

Canobolas are set to acquire their HPV early next year, joining Kinross Wolaroi and James Sheahan as schools involved in the fast growing sport.

David de Bruyn from NSW HPV said there is no reason Orange can’t have the success the Australian International Pedal Prix, held in Murray Bridge South Australia, has each year.

“The Murray Bridge event attracts 30,000 spectators and generates over 3.7million annually,” David said. “So if we can emulate that event it would obviously be a great thing for

our Orange, not only financially, but for social, tourism and community building reasons.”

David would like to see every school in Orange with their very own HPV, as well as sporting groups and engineering companies.

“It’s a sport that people from all walks of life can get into and be proud of,” he said.

Canobolas High Design and Technology teacher, Mal Kay, said he is excited that the school will be involved in HPV racing next year.

“A project like this is perfect for the school because it involves everyone in some way.

There is not just the sporting side of it; it also has aspects of problem solving, engineering aspects, working as a team, as well as physical and mental strength.”

James said he was honoured to

“I’m surprised and proud to have my name join the long list of apprentices who have won it over the years,” he said. “I’m also very grateful for the cash prize which will help me buy the tools I need to further my career. It will come in very handy.”

Helen southwell form the CWa congratulated James on the win.

“We’ve presented the grant to

a lot of fine apprentices in many different fields over the years including chefs, beauticians, painters, bricklayers and greenkeepers...the whole spectrum. The grant was designed to help give a ‘leg up’ to the apprentice as they finish up their course.”

Helen explained that a percentage of the funds raised from the sale of scones, tea and coffee at the australian National Field Days goes

towards the apprentice Grant.

The CWa reached their decision with advice from skillset.

Ben Ruddy from skillset said there were a lot of great apprentices in the running.

“We have about fifty 4th year apprentices that we have a look at. James stood out as a deserving winner because of his great work at TaFe, along with reports from his supervisors, and his overall attitude.”

Ben said that James’ bronze medal performance at the recent Worldskills australia National Competition also made him stand out.

“James is ahead of the game in a lot of aspects of his apprenticeship and we congratulate him on this win. may he have plenty more awards in the future!”

Cleaning Up I haven’t ranted since the ‘opening the door’ column, but here comes another one...

Last year sometime I wrote about the yuckiness of seeing guts all over the road as the endless number of ‘roos, foxes and bunnies were left splattered on the highways and roads, only disappearing once the crows had had their fill. Well, I’ll take it all back as I watched a local truck out on the highway today dragging a huge kangaroo off the road for disposal. Well done there. Pity about those careless and unthinking drivers who, after hitting a ‘roo or another piece of wildlife just continue to drive, instead of pulling over and dragging the poor beast off the middle of the road to avoid further risk to your fellow man.

Time and again I’ve been happy to say that I know nothing about nothing, but I’m going to mention something that I’ve noticed recently across the CBD of Orange.

I know businesses come and go, and that the landscape of our main streets in Orange is ever-changing, but the eyesores of businesses that have closed down are a blight on the landscape. I won’t be naming names here, but next time you’re downtown shopping you’ll notice them. There’s quite a few around. When a business closes down and the premises becomes uninhabited, it’s beyond me how it’s allowed to remain festy on the inside, boxes and broken fixtures displayed as blemishes for passers-by to see, as well as still being inked with the former owners now obsolete logos plastered everywhere. Yes, think Summer

Street, think Lords Place, think Peisley Street. Now that I’ve brought them to your attention, you’ll be annoyed by them too.

I’ve been told that I shouldn’t highlight problems without providing solutions – I’m not sure if I can solve the problem here, but I can try. I think there should be some sort of ‘bunking out’ clause on a rented property that says the leaving tenant must leave the premises clean, bare and fit for occupation by the next prospective tenant. Can I suggest it’s all repainted in a plain non-offensive colour, like ‘Woodland Grey’ or just plain white, ready for the next business to get their wares off the ground? I know rent prices in the main part of Orange can be absolutely through the roof, but is it possible to tack on an extra sort of bond onto the price of rental, which will be forfeited if the tenants just up and do a runner? Surely, the tenant from a big name company (… Lords Place) would have to answer not just to our local council, but to their parent company also for just leaving the building with giant pink signs there? Empty buildings in the business district look bad at the best of times, but when the paint is peeling, the stickers are hanging off, the tiles are broken and the glass is filthy, the look is way worse than bad. Ugh. Council would have zero chance of fining the ‘offenders’ retrospectively, so a pre-emptive strike via a leaving bond might be the only solution to a problem like this. They obviously don’t give 2 hoots, but I believe they have a responsibility to leave their diggings as they found it, and a responsibility to the town that supported them whilst they were in business. I don’t believe it’s a very good image at all, and the Tidy Towns people must surely make a note of these kinds of things as they judge us. Just saying …

Central West fishing enthusiasts noW have their very oWn fishing Competitions.

JAMIE STEDMAN The firsT in a series of competitions was held at Lake Burrendong on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd November and attracted an impressive 20 teams.

The Central West fishing Masters competitions are the creation of Orange based businesses The Gurus Gear Customised fishing rods and Canobolas Caravan and Marine.

Gurus Gear Owner ian McLean said “there was a need for catch and release fishing competitions in the Central West to help raise the profile of freshwater fishing and give anglers the thrill of a competitive days fishing”.

“We especially want to encourage families and teams to fish in a

friendly atmosphere and teach the kids catch and release practices for our native fish. ‘’We are all about promoting sustainable fishing” says ian.

The series of three competitions at Lake Burrendong, Wyangla, Windemere and the Burrendong Grand final are all catch, photograph and release competitions. in the first competition, anglers of all ages competed in Total fish Length and the Biggest fish categories. Major Prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and all entries received a fishing gift pack.

Dubbo resident Josh higgs won 1st Place in the Total fish Length and the Biggest Golden Perch categories and walked away with prizes including an evercool 12 volt fridge, shimano

rod and reel and a custom made Gurus Gear rod.

1st Place Winner in the family Category went to Guy and seth Bennett of Parkes and the Vernon family of Orange won the Biggest redfin category.

Local businesses got behind the competition generously providing $4,000 worth of prizes. sponsors in Orange included Canobolas Caravan and Marine, B select Bridgestone Tyres and stingAray Lures.

The next competition is at Wyangla dam on the 17th and 18th January. Get in early.

WHO AM I?

I was born April 17, 1972, in Houston, Texas, and graduated from university with a theatre major in 1994.

In 1995, I won an understudy part in Broadway’s A Month In The Country.

Later that year, I made my screen debut in the TV movie Zoya.

In 1996, I made appearances in the TV shows Spin City and Law and Order.

I became widely recognised after landing a recurring role in the TV series Felicity in 1998, where I met my future husband, Scott Foley. We divorced after four years of marriage.

I have appeared in films including Pearl Harbor (2001), Daredevil (2003), Suddenly 30 (2004) and Valentine’s Day (2010).

Walking the historic streets of european cities, you’ll often find artists offering to sketch your portrait as a souvenir, but this is a rarity in metropolitan australia, and even more so in regional areas such as orange.

But since returning home for the break between her first and second years of study, hanli Uys has been drawing portraits on saturday mornings in orange, as well as at Millthorpe as part of late night shopping on Fridays at Bowerbird old Wares. she said it’s a unique way to keep developing her drawing skills. “it’s a nice way to do something artistic,” she said.

“i do feel i get to know the sitters when i draw them. it’s a sort of authentic interaction.” the tools she most commonly uses are a pencil and a paper stump to smooth the hatching lines and quickly lay down tone; another technique is to use a sepia tone wash with line work in conté crayon. she said she’ll most probably major in painting in her degree and that drawing is a great way to develop one’s artistic talents. “i think a lot of people get started with drawing, because it’s the most accessible. You can just doodle with a pen while you’re on the phone and then you’ve got a drawing - people have done amazing work with just a Biro or an hB pencil,” she said. “and i like it because i can build

it up, but compared with painting it’s more portable. i’d like to try with oils - we’ll see what i can do in 20 minutes!” “i like to get out of my own drawing style and try new things because it gets boring if you just do what you know you can do,” she said. hanli and her family has long been involved with the art scene in orange; hanli as a member of the orange art society, organising life drawing classes there; while her sister Marike, also gave art classes at the orange regional gallery.

The Burn Card performed alongside 18 other up and coming bands from across Australia at a massive show held in Mt Pritchard last weekend.

The band made their way through to the Australian final by putting in a stellar performance at the regional finals held in Sydney recently.

OC Life had a quick chat with bassist Amy K about the GBOB experience.

Hey Amy, how was the final? The final was amazing...

It was huge! There were 18 bands playing and we didn’t know where we would come in the line up until we got there and drew a number.

We played 15th which was good and bad… it was good because we got to suss out the competition, but it was also bad because we had a nervous wait!

How do you feel you performed? I think we

played really well! The level of musicianship and stagecraft of all who performed on the night was just brilliant.

Unfortunately we didn’t get a place but we played the best we could and the band who won really deserved to.

What was the whole GBOB experience like? Do you feel you’ve grown as a band?

I think the Burn Card have learnt a lot about themselves both as individual musicians and as part of a team over the last few weeks. We really practiced hard to tighten our whole show up; just because we wanted to give the best performance we possibly could at the final. It’s also given a great confidence boost and belief that we are doing a great thing!

This comp forced us to push ourselves and work beyond our comfort zones and for that we count this as a win for our development. We met some sensational bands, music industry professionals and music fans, so at the end of the day it was an awesome experience.

Will The Burn Card back up again next year?!

Personally I would like to see us enter again next year, but that’s something we will have to discuss at a later date!

Billy Thorpe with ‘The Urchins’, July 1966

Our photo this week takes us back to July 1966 when a crowd of 1,200 Orange and district teenagers attended the Billy Thorpe AU Go Go show at the Amoco Hall.

Constable Bob Hook, supervisor of the Police Boys’ Club, described the dance as one of the most successful and trouble-free events ever staged in Orange.

The show, which was held to raise funds for the

Police Boys’ Club, featured Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, the Black Diamonds from Lithgow and the Urchins.

The Urchins was the Orange Police Boys’ Club band with Albert Calvo, Eric Folitarick, Mick Bennett and Archie van Thiel. This was the band’s first appearance at a dance.

Our photos show the Urchins talking to and getting the autograph of Billy Thorpe, and some of

the fans entranced by the band.

Age: 53 Lives at: Calare Aged Care Facility Bev Warn describes her life as an unusual life.

She lived most of her formative years as a Ward of the State, moving from orphanage to orphanage or foster homes all over the state. Her mother had left her and her siblings at an orphanage asking them to look after the children for a few weeks while she found some where to live but she never returned for them. Bev was three at the time and the second youngest of seven.

She has two children the eldest just graduated from university and the other is a mum in Bathurst. While the children were small they lost everything in a house fire which resulted in them moving to Kandos.

When the youngest started school she moved to Bathurst and studied at Charles Sturt

University completing a Bachelor of Education in Special Education. She then worked at Bathurst High and Carenne Special School until she was medically retired due to multiple health issues that meant that she no longer could physically live without assistance.

However she is now working as a Subject Coordinator for Charles Sturt University, teaching and marking work for distance education students, involving forum management.

She finds it difficult to find quiet places to work while living in Calare Aged Care Facility.

Junior film makers walk the red carpet Photos by EdithMay GowinG On Wednesday November 19th lots of excited junior film makers walked the red carpet at the Odeon Cinemas in Orange. This was the premier of 17 short films made by students from 10 Pre2 schools including Orange East, Calare, Bowen, Orange Public, Blayney, Millthorpe, Molong, Clergate, Nashdale and Manildra.

Approx 250 – 300 students were involved. The students’ films were between 3 and 5 minutes in length featuring the theme ‘Fairy Tales and Fables – a Modern Take on an Old Classic’.

We had been gazing into the deep pit at Cadia from which so much real gold has been won at such cost. The fool’s gold was in a small box of rocks beside us – its crystals were very interesting and quite pretty but otherwise useless and worthless.

Money is good and so is honest work to get it, but if we get our life values wrong then our own real gold can easily become fool’s gold. We will find that money is a useful servant but a very bad master.

Pharaoh Tutankhamun was buried with

lots of gold but his own Book of the Dead would have told him that it was not his gold but his soul that would be weighed after death. Here the ancient Egyptians had put their finger on the thing that really matters.

Jesus Christ said that we must not serve and worship money, but serve each other and worship God properly, and wise people who do these things will store up for themselves spiritual treasures in heaven.

Richard held the groups attention with his informative and humorous style. His lecture was entitled “Without music education there is no education”. How can this be so?

How does music make this claim and why? He explained how music education assists in the prompt learning across other fields.

MEETING THIS WEEK Dying with Dignity is hosting a free morning tea and talk by Richard Mills, form President of Dying with Dignity NSW. The talk will be on life matters including care directives, palliative care and voluntary euthanasia. Living History In The Park Residents and Community groups came together last Saturday to help secure at least $1 million for the development of the new Orange Regional Museum.

There were vintage car and motorbike displays, live re-enactments, bands and active ways to engage the community the in the new museum and precinct project.

Performances by the City of Orange Brass Band, the Canobolas Pipe Band and November Shorn also contributed to the day’s excitement.

Further fundraisers are planned throughout the New Year.

This last week has been one of emptiness.

JAMIE STEDMAN Phillip Hughes’ passing has left an imprint on people across the globe. The tributes, too numerous to count, have each been as meaningful, emotional and respectful as each other.

To this end, I won’t be penning my normal good, bad and ugly piece’s, rather, I decided to put the call out across the facebook world to try and get as many tribute photos as possible.

As you can see, the response was massive.

It’s hard to put into words how much this tragedy has touched us all. As an individual, it has affected me much more than I thought possible. I can’t explain why. I did not know Phillip, but as a cricket nut, I enjoyed watching him.

The more I read about him, the more I understand the feeling of loss those closest to him are experiencing. Clearly, he was loved.

Many I have spoken to say the same thing. Perhaps it’s the fact he was playing our national sport, perhaps it’s because he was but a boy, doing what he loved...I just don’t know.

My kids were outside on the trampoline through the week and I took the chance to listen to a tribute from nova 969’s Ryan “Fitzy” Fitzgerald - one of many I have listened to through the last week. It was emotionally charged and as touching as I’ve heard and instantly moved me to tears. My daughter walked in and I of course had to explain to her “what are you crying for daddy?” which was asked in genuine concern. I told her something was in my eyes...I could come up with no other solution for a five year old.

I have been able to take many positives from Phillip’s passing. The unashamed outpouring of support for each other; we all feel for the Hughes family and the greater cricketing family but the way communities across our nation have gathered to pay their respects TOGETHER is, and continues to be, extraordinary.

This is no small thing.

I was privileged enough to be on hand at Orange’s Wade Park last Saturday where

cricketers of all ages came together as one in an outstanding show of support not only for the Hughes family but for each other. To see parents wandering toward the ground with little ones in their whites was simply incredible. To those that made it; thankyou. I understand some juniors were still playing at midday and were quite upset that they were unable to be there; to those boys and girls, mums and dads, I say this – thank you for WANTING to be there; that is just as important as being there.

Of concern to me was the cricket itself; how were people, players, going to handle playing the game again?

Would the game survive? The test match between Pakistan and New Zealand gave an indication. New Zealand bowled Pakistan out without bowling a short delivery. Whenever they got a wicket, no celebration followed. Both sides were clearly hurting. Then out came New Zealand Captain, Brendon McCullum.

With the initials P.H. written just under his countries national emblem, he blasted his way to the fourth fastest test 200 ever recorded. He did so without so much as a smile before dedicating his innings to the memory of Phillip Hughes.

He later released a statement on behalf of the Kiwi team that read in part...

“Our focus at the moment is not on our performances, it is all about Phil... We are heartbroken for Phil’s family, Greg, Virginia, Megan and Jason. No one should go through what you guys are going through right now.”

All class.

Later that Saturday, I too took to the cricket field. Both sides wore black armbands and participated in 63 seconds of silence before the game in honour of Phillip. Most pleasing and perhaps most poignant was just how quickly we got on with the cricket. Balls were bowled, wickets fell and the game moved on.

I hope those at the top-level are able to experience that same feeling when they again take the field.

Being the perfect couple they stopped to help.

There stood Santa Claus with a huge bundle of toys.

Not wanting to disappoint any children on the eve of Christmas, the perfect couple loaded Santa and his toys into their vehicle. Soon they were driving along delivering the toys.

Unfortunately, the driving conditions deteriorated and the perfect couple and Santa Claus had an accident. Only one of them survived the accident.

Who was the survivor?

The perfect woman survived.

She’s the only one who really existed in the first place. Everyone knows there is no Santa Claus and there is no such thing as a perfect man.

So, if there is no perfect man and no Santa Claus, the perfect woman must have been driving. This explains why there was an accident.

Hi Everyone, By the time you read this I will already be in Abu Dhabi for the 2014 Men’s World Championships.

I will Captain the team which includes a mix of experience and youth with Sam Cooley, Jayden Leming, Brendan Meads, David Porto and Paul White and the National Coach great mate Andrew Frawley. Andrew has a vast experience with coaching at the International level. Cannot wait to start competing with the Australian team starting with Opening Ceremony Thursday 4th December, then practice session, followed by Singles, Doubles and Teams event. Then the Masters finals on Sunday 14th December. I am very excited and couldn’t be more prouder to be sellected to captain the team and representing Australia. Wish us good luck and great bowling.
