Hi friends And so another year comes to an end.

My fabulous team have thoroughly enjoyed bringing you OCL throughout 2014 and we look forward to continuing on again next year. We’re all taking a wellearned rest now but we’ll be back, fresh and in top form, with our first issue for 2015 on January 8th.

Volunteers and donations are still needed!

Volunteers to help set up on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, help during lunch and pack down are still needed.

Mr Webb said jobs on the day are varied and there aren’t actually any prescriptive job titles as such.

“Most people will switch around and do whatever’s needed,” he said.

He said many families get involved also.

Mr Webb encouraged non-perishable food donations, things such as hams, are already organised.

“If you could think about something to be put around the table that would be a wonderful idea,” he said.

It’s also worth mentioning what a great team of people we have here at OCL. You only have to look at the paper they produce each week to get an idea of how dedicated and talented they are. We claim to be a newspaper with heart and my team here show that to be true every week.

Our last Looney Lotto winner for the year was Alison Byrne. When we return on January 8th, we’ll kick the year off with two $100 prizes for that first week, something to look forward to.

This week we say farewell to another one of our OCL family. Our Director of First Impressions Steph Bennett leaves us to continue her studies at Uni in Canberra.

Steph has been a great ambassador for us on our front counter and she leaves with our heartfelt thanks and very best wishes. We’ll miss her happy and bright disposition.

Sharing Christmas spirit at Community Lunch Over 400 people are expected to enjoy Christmas lunch together at the 17th annual Community Christmas Lunch, held at the Orange Function Centre on Christmas Day thanks to generous public support.

ASHLEIGH PRITCHARD The Christmas period is one time – and possibly a rare chance for some – when people can share in joy and generosity with those all-too-distant relatives and friends.

Some people however, don’t have the luxury of being able to indulge during this time.

They may not have people to celebrate with, or they may be in a financial situation where ‘splashing out’ isn’t an option.

Community Christmas Lunch Organiser John Webb said the community event aims to provide Christmas Lunch with all the trimmings for everyone - including conversation and engagement – on Christmas Day. “The whole point of [the Com-

munity Christmas Lunch] is if you’re lonely or if you haven’t got anybody to have Christmas lunch with, then you can come along and you can sit down and there’ll be someone to talk to,” Mr Webb said.

“We want to share and make Christmas a happy occasion.”

The help of 120 volunteers were be-

hind the success of last year’s lunch, he said – along with community donations – kindness which he hopes to replicate this year.

He said people come along on Christmas Eve to set up, help on Christmas Day and then pack up after the lunch doing all sorts of jobs including being ushers, cleaners, servers as well as just being a friend to some.

“Some people come along and just talk to people to ensure everyone’s got company. They themselves may have plenty of friends and family but just have the heart for it,” he said.

School and community groups have helped by donating non-perishable items and collecting money in support.

If your family is away or you’re on your own this Christmas Day, come along to Christmas Lunch at the Orange Function Centre from 12pm.

Thanks ladies!

Firstly let me just take this opportunity from the OC Life family to wish you and yours a safe, healthy and happy Christmas and New Year…after all, that’s all we can hope for.

These days Christmas means many different things to many of us. It’s the chance to come together, family and friends, as one. Eat too much, exchange gifts - if that is your way – and, if you’re lucky enough to have some time off, re-charge the batteries, ready for the new season and the challenges that may bring.

So how do you celebrate your Christmas? Do you attend midnight mass at church? Do you drive around checking out the lights? Or do you just celebrate in your own way?

Me and mine do a little bit of everything. Wife and kids to Church without me as it’s not really my thing. Lights together as a family, making sure the kids give some of “their” pocket money to those collecting for various charities, and since having kids, my wife and I have started our own little tradition.

Each year, leading up to the man in the big red suit arriving, the kids go through their toys etc. to find things they can give to those less fortunate.

Now let me just say, it’s not quite the big noble gesture it may seem on the face of it. Basically it’s just a way for my wife and I to de-clutter the house! However it has the added benefit of instilling in our children, the gift of giving and how much joy can be taken from it.

My little girl in particular has to be watched like a hawk; she tries to offload

everything! She’s a bit of a Mumma bear when it comes to others, and it’s my most favourite trait of hers! There are some others I’d be happy to see disappear but I suppose we have to take the good with the bad a bit don’t we?

And here’s my point; my kids understand the spirit of Christmas. They understand giving – and they certainly understand receiving! They have learnt tolerance and most importantly acceptance.

Acceptance of others beliefs and ideals. They know they don’t have to agree, and as little people with their very own personalities nor should they; but as a team my wife and I try to teach them acceptance.

It’s been a learning curve for me too. I haven’t always been the most forgiving or accepting person –whether by design or my surroundings, I can be cynical at times.

So to try teaching my little ones such a thing has opened my eyes to new experiences and opportunities. To watch them mix with and accept all before them, pleases me immensely – almost as much as their outright refusal to accept smoking does; kids say the darnedest things at the most inappropriate times.

SO my point here is simple, this festive season my challenge to you is acceptance; be less judgmental (particularly about my work!) and let go of things a little easier.

I promise it’ll make Christmas a little easier to deal with…

OPs garden grows Chris Bennetts The Orange Public School’s playground will continue to grow in cultural significance.

Member for Orange, Andrew Gee visited Orange Public School during the week to announce three environmental grants totalling $8,500 to fund environmental projects in the Orange electorate.

Mr Gee was pleased to announce that Orange Public School has been awarded a grant of $2,500 to further enhance the Mudyidharaa (place of learning) Indigenous Garden, through the NSW Governments Eco Schools and Food Gardens in Schools programs.

“In 2012 Orange Public School designed an indigenous garden with students, parents, Wiradjuri Elders, and local indigenous cultural representatives,” Mr Gee said. “The garden was blessed and earth turned during an indigenous ceremony, with much of the garden planted and mulched by indigenous

Ashlea Pritchard The group is a community alliance formed following the success of the Dementia Awareness Week in September.

Success as in being able to highlight how many different ways dementia affects our society daily.

Statistics show the number of Australians living with dementia will be approximately 900,000 by 2050, given our population is ageing and the fact that early-onset dementia can affect someone in their 40s. Around 70% of people currently living with dementia reside in the community, adding to the strain on health services.

It’s also the third highest cause of death across our country.

UnitingCare Ageing Community Development Manager – West, Robyn Sharp said the group is looking to both educate more people about dementia and ensure there are community facilities for sufferers.

“The Orange Dementia Friendly Community will be working to identify and address key issues to enable Orange to become dementia friendly in ways that are important to people with dementia and their carers,” Ms Sharp said.

Following the ODFC’s first planning meeting at UnitingCare Ageing last Tuesday, there are plans in the works.

Ms Sharp said businesses and organisations will be invited to increase their dementia awareness by participating in training and then become recognised for that effort through receiving a ‘Dementia-Friendly tick’, which will indicate to carers and people living with dementia that their staff are supportive and the environment is safe and welcoming.

“So if a business, say a bank or a chemist or even the taxi company trained their staff on how to be enablers – when they have a conversation with a person who has dementia, they can help them navigate around the town and feel secure and safe – they can get this symbol on their window that says our staff understand dementia,” she said.

While the committee is in its early stages of planning, members of the community and businesses can also become involved by being on the group mailing list to receive information and updates, disseminating information and promoting events to the community and staff, encouraging dementia education for staff or obtaining the ‘Dementia Friendly’ tick for your organisation, business or department.

Last Sunday the Rotary Club of Orange held the first of two Christmas Markets on the Northcourt lawn, behind the Library. The day was a big success with stall-holders very pleased with the turn out. Despite the ground being very soggy underfoot after a mix-up saw the sprinklers left on throughout the night, shoppers weren’t inconvenienced at all.

building an accessible home (what we call our ‘Miracle House’) for our 8 year old triplets Anwen, Mahalah and Gideon. I must mention here that half of the donations have come from two separate, very generous families in Dubbo, to whom we are very grateful.

When our story first featured on October the 23rd we had $36,000 towards our fundraising goal of $200,000. Now, two months later, we are at $77,000. We owe this to many hundreds of local people from all walks of life - the very young to the very old individuals, families, businesses, sporting clubs, church groups and local banks and credit unions.

Some have given $10, some have given $10,000. Whatever the amount, we have been incredibly grateful for every single dollar

that people have entrusted us with, out of the goodness of their hearts, because they believe that the ‘Miracle House’ can, and should, become a reality.

Because they want to see three special children in a house that is specifically built to meet their special needs. How can we ever say thank you enough?

Alongside this, in November we finally became the proud owners of a 5 acre block of land on the fringes of Canowindra, all ready to build on (see photo). We asked for the settlement day to coincide with Anwen, Mahalah and Gideon’s 8th birthday - it was symbolic of our hopes for the land- and it became an extra special day for our family and friends.

With all of the above in mind, needless to say we are looking forward to what 2015 will bring.

Currently we are grateful to have a top notch building designer from Sydney working on our unique project, free of charge.

When the plans are finalised sometime in the New Year, we will begin the process of preparing to build. Earthworks and a slab are on the top of the list.

There is quite a journey ahead of us, and still a long way to go, but I am quietly hopeful that our ‘Miracle House’ will become a reality in time for Anwen, Mahalah and Gideon’s 9th birthday, next November. What a gift that would be.

Christmas Festival in Bowen County singers, a Christmas fashions in the field, puppet play and carol singing will be all part of a special festive event in Bowen tomorrow evening.

ASHLEA PRITCHARD Organisers of the Friday Fun Club for children have teamed up with Orange City Council, NSW Government’s Family & Community Services and the

Salvation Army to put on a special Christmas event for the Bowen community.

A diverse array of activities have been organised, focusing on the traditional Christmas message, said organiser Mal Rankin.

Events will include: a

Christmas fashion parade for Angels, Shepherds, Wise Men, Mary’s, Joseph’s and stable animals; Salvation Army band and carols, a puppet play, a Pageant performance, the cutting of Jesus’s birthday cake, and country singing by KP

Connection.

There’ll also be a BBQ, jumping castle, games, craft and face painting to add to the family friendly aspect of the Festival.

“It’s a Christmas festival and carols event in Bowen for the Bowen community and it’s a free event,” he said.

“People from the Bowen area and the greater community are welcome, but it’s more focused on getting people from Bowen to come because it’s an easy walk from wherever they live to the park with the family.”

The Christmas Festival and Carols will be held at Margaret Stevenson Oval tomorrow (Friday) from 6pm to 8:15pm.

The systems link includes about $20,000 worth of equipment with three cameras in key hospital departments - and will provide professionals from Sydney, Newcastle or Brisbane the ability to offer ‘in situ’, momentto-moment specialist medical expertise and provide answers to life-saving questions 24/7.

“Up until now we would be discussing the management of children and newborn infants by phone with experts in Sydney and on the basis of our descriptions of they would give us advice,” said Orange Health Service Paediatrician Dr Paul Bloomfield.

“A lot of that advice was in preparation for their transfer.

So with the introduction of the cameras, that will certainly improve the level of information that the experts receive,” Dr Bloomfield said.

Specialists will be able to monitor a child’s conditions by viewing videos placed above babies’ bed or humidicrib and observing their vital signs.

“So all of that speeds up the process and I think also improves the accuracy of the advice they give us,” Dr Bloomfield said.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Chairman Michael Slater said the idea to install the systems in 19 regional centres in communities where Newcastle Perma-

nent Building Societies are based – at a cost of $330,000 - was inspired by the saving of a life in Lismore through video technology.

“For the first time in terms of young babies’ diagnostic processes, this facility will remove the tyranny of distance that can limit the quality that goes into the diagnostic process,” Mr Slater said.

“This facility will support the clinician to make a good quality diagnosis with the support of the paediatric specialists.”

Similar systems have been installed in Bathurst and Mudgee in our region.

One in 38 babies born in regional hospitals will need the expert care only available through the video link. Approximately 4,000 calls will be made each year using this system.

Elvis is on his way

New transport to treatment for cancer patients The keys for two Subaru Foresters will be handed over to the Orange Cancer Council NSW Western Region team early next year to help patients in the Central West travel to treatment.

ASHLEA PRITCHARD Travelling to and from medical appointments is difficult for many people affected by cancer.

Cancer treatment usually occurs over an extended period of time and requires repeated attendance at facilities that may be far from home.

To ease the burden on cancer patients – and their families - Orange Cancer Council NSW Western Region have been working on a transport scheme to assist during these trying times.

Cancer Council NSW Western Region team located in Orange have been successful in a grant for the two vehicles they’ll soon own to transport cancer patients to and from treatment in the Central West.

This was thanks to a $66,500 grant from Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation.

Cancer Council NSW Western Region Community Programs Coordinator, Fiona Markwick said different transportation schemes are supported by branches of the not-for-profit organisation throughout the state.

She said having two vehicles

known as reliable and family friendly works best for Central West residents’ needs.

“It’s an independent travel model.

We’re not having to rely on anyone and we can run it ourselves,” Ms Markwick said.

She said she’s also working in with Cancer Care Western NSW – who facilitate the operation of Western Care Lodge – so the cars will be of the greatest assistance possible.

“It’s about helping out people who would be stranded otherwise,” she said.

“I think one of the great advan-

tages of this service is, yes it benefits the individual with cancer, but importantly it also benefits the family too. Because they’re constantly driving back and forth,” said Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Executive Officer Jason Bourke.

“This [Cancer Council] service will reduce the burden on the families.”

As the cars will be used in all Central West communities – and in an area with about a 200km radius of Orange – the call is out for volunteers to assist with driving patients and their families.

Ms Markwick said she’d like to have a team of about 12-20 people available and that the only qualification need is a drivers licence.

NEW BIGGER RESCUE HELICOPTER FOR ORANGE Fantastic news is breaking this week that Orange will be the recipient of a new larger rescue helicopter.

One of the key requests I made in my submissions to the Aeromedical Review was that the smaller Eurocopter currently in use at Orange and the Central West be phased out. The Eurocopter is an excellent machine but is too small, and has had problems taking off under certain conditions. Those days are now over with the introduction of the new Augusta 139. This new chopper has an extended range and can easily take two patients. It’s great news for the whole region.

About a week ago the Orange Palliative Care Community Consultative Group, convened

by Dr Louis Christie, met at the Health Service to discuss future directions in palliative care.

The Augusta 139 is the helicopter currently in use in Wollongong and as we’ve always said, the previous Government should have placed it in Orange in the first place.

$300,000 FOR ORANGE ELECTORATE COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE Twenty four projects from the Orange electorate will receive a share in $300,000 through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program.

Projects across the electorate range from $30,000 to $3,000 and will see community infrastructure improved as well as encouraging the enhancement of local community based activities that create more vibrant and inclusive communities.

Local businesses and construction jobs will also be supported which is a welcome boost in improving local investment in the community.

I was delighted to make the announcement alongside members from the Orange Branch of the Country Women’s Association, Deborah Marr and Mary McArdle.

The Orange CWA will receive a $15,000 grant to paint the interior and exterior of the hall which will complement their $10,000 grant from last year’s program, which enabled them to re-tile the front steps and upgrade safety features at the iconic hall in Robertson Park.

Palliative care is a vitally important subject and we need to ensure that we as a community, have the best possible range of services available.

One of the tasks of the committee is to examine palliative care services in Orange and examine where the gaps in services are and come up with solutions.

Dr Christie pointed out that when the new hospital was being planned, it was expressly agreed by all of the relevant medical practitioners that the new hospital would not have one big palliative care ward, but rather individual rooms with ensuites, where patients could spend their final days. At the meeting Dr Christie also indicated that increasing Orange’s hospice capacity might be the preferred option, but there is still much work to do.

In the development of any Palliative Care Services Plan, there is obviously a need for home based care (where 70% of people wish to finish their lives), aged care, hospital care and possibly also hospice care. I’ll be guided by what the experts say. If they tell me we need a hospice or some other solution, I’ll back it in a heartbeat.

The work of the Committee will continue in 2015.

SCHOOL PRESENTATION CEREMONIES Well, school Presentation Days for 2014 have drawn to a close. I really enjoy these days and nights as they provide a great opportunity to get into our local schools, see what’s been happening and share in the achievements of students.

One of the great strengths of Orange is its schools. We are blessed with a great diversity, with each being unique. Despite the diversity, one thing they all have in common is incredibly dedicated teaching staff. If there was one common theme amongst all our schools, that would be it. Nurturing the promise of tomorrow is a high calling and a big responsibility. Orange and its surrounding districts can be truly proud of the educators we have working here.

Thank you to all the teachers for their hard work throughout 2014. I hope that you get a well-earned break over Christmas and return with all of the passion and enthusiasm you’ve brought to our schools in 2014.

To our retiring teachers, thank you on behalf of the community for your service. We are very grateful for your work in shaping the next generation of Australians.

Bob Lulham from St Vinnies said it was a wonderful display of community spirit.

“It’s a remarkable display of generosity by our local police, and it’s also fantastic to see the school children

getting involved through Mini Vinnies,” Bob said.

“It’s a great sense of charity and giving which is the true meaning of Christmas.”

Mini Vinnie Lucy Cook said she enjoyed wrapping all the presents with her friends.

“It’s a nice feeling to help people at Christmas time, and it’s also fun to work as a team and do a good job.

CWA of NSW ends 2014 with two donations to provide ‘hands on’ assistance to communities CONTRIBUTED

The CWA of NSW is ending the year by making two significant donations to organisations that are both providing support ‘on the ground’ to communities that are in need.

The Rural Financial Counselling Service NSW (RFCS) has received a $100,000 donation to support families suffering in the drought conditions that still affect so many

parts of NSW. The second donation of $50,000 was given to Médecins Sans Frontières to help fight the Ebola epidemic that is affecting both rural and densely populated urban areas in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

“The Country Women’s Association of NSW has a long and proud history of hands on assistance where it is needed most whether that is in Australia or overseas,” said CWA of NSW President, Tanya Cameron, “and that is just one reason why we like supporting the

Nelson’s at the top of his game JAMIE STEDMAN Youngster Nelson Harris is just 17. At a time when many his age are struggling to find themselves, Nelson’s discovered his passion. He’s been working at Komatsu since the beginning of the year, straight out of year 10 at Orange High and has just been recognised by management and staff of the Orange branch as the 1st year apprentice of the year for 2014.

Nelson, like most his age, was quietly happy about the award, simply stating “yeah, it’s good.”

Nelson’s supervisors were more forthcoming however, “Nelson’s efforts were deserving of recognition”. “He’s a hard working little bloke who puts in all the time. He has a great work ethic and a good attitude” said his supervisor.

Orange born and bred, Nelson will be a qualified Heavy Plant mechanic once he’s finished his four year apprenticeship, something that can quite literally take him across the planet if he so desires.

Along with a lovely trophy and national recognition, Nelson received a $350 voucher from Blackwoods to assist with the on-going costs of being on apprentice wages.

Nelson wanted to thank staff and management of the Komatsu Orange Branch for not only his nomination but for being a good bunch to work with.

counsellors as experiencing extreme financial difficulty and require assistance due to the drought and will reach them in time for Christmas.

This donation follows the CWA’s recent appeals to Government to provide easier access and less restrictions around government support for drought affected producers.

The donation to Médecins Sans Frontières will be used to support the work of their staff across West Africa.

Beer Talk Do you struggle for conversation pieces over Christmas with the rellies? Here are a couple of ideas for you.

For many of us, Christmas is that once-a-year time when we get together with the relatives from both sides of the family. We say a prayer to the man upstairs that things will go smoothly as people who normally wouldn’t be in a room together struggle to find some common ground and get through the day incident free.

We used to do a lot of travelling on Christmas day as I grew up, making sure we visited everyone who was important. This stopped the hassle of having all of the rellies in the same room, but made Christmas as much about ticking all the boxes as it did about just enjoying the day. I reckon for most of us there’s a lot less travelling involved these days on the 25th which is nice. But this brings with it a few extra problems – what on earth are we going to talk about for the entire day?

Most of us have a loud and rowdy brother-in-law, so much of the entertainment is taken care of, as the first beer gets cracked at 8am, and the Christmas cricket gets underway whilst some of the guests are still in pyjamas. I’m not sure how it works in your world, but we normally keep the gift opening until everyone has arrived or is out of bed, which might be about 9 o’clock. That means the little kids are near bursting by that time, so a few pressies might have been leaked out before then to appease them. Ham and cheese croissants with champagne and orange get us through until the main meal of the day, although the bowl of

Christmas chocolates is usually half gone by the time the pork, ham, turkey and seafood are on the table mid-afternoon.

Which brings me to the subject of idle conversations whilst pulling the crackers. I reckon the Christmas banter this year should stay right away from all of the topics of horribleness; there’s been far too many things to bring us back to earth for people to be shooting their mouths off with opinions on everything.

Here’s my ‘out of bounds’ topics for Christmas conversation - Syria, Ebola, Philip Hughes, the bushfires and floods, the $7 co-payment, Ukraine and Crimea, Israel and Hamas, Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, Malaysian Airlines Flight 17, medicinal marijuana and terrorism.

I’m sure there’s more, but you know what’s fair game and what’s not whilst you are making the gravy.

Ok, here are my suggestions for some good ice-breakers as the day gets longer and the beers start to make everyone braver. Keep it light to avoid arguments I’m thinking. Jacquie Lambie has to be the easiest topic (target?) for sure – I’m not convinced we’ll be seeing or hearing too much of her or the PUP for much longer. Sebastian Vettel eating humble pie as Daniel Ricciardo whooped his butt all year – go Dan. Scotland isn’t independent – what would William Wallace think of all that? Should sportsmen be ‘Australian of the Year’? What’s the one food you could eat everyday for the rest of your life? Is it OK to go to work these days unshaven?

Can we make a case for waaaaay harsher penalties for drink-driving and mobile phone use while driving? Oops, I just got on my soap box again, sorry. Maybe just keep it humorous by asking if it is OK to wee in the shower?

Have a safe and Happy Christmas everyone, I hope I haven’t bored you too much this year. Make time to watch The Shawshank Redemption if you can. Cheers, PT

Don’t let your Christmas lunch upset your pet’s wellbeing With the festive season upon us, pet owners are being reminded of the danger of sharing Christmas treats with your furry friends.

“Feeding your four-legged friend Christmas leftovers including cooked bones, ham offcuts, trimmed steak and sausages can cause problems such as obstruction and pancreatitis, which in turn could be potentially fatal and require serious medical attention,” said Ms Collings.

diet consistent all year round. Animals have very different digestive systems and metabolism rates compared to humans so take caution when choosing what treats to give your pet and remember that pet specific treats are always the best.”

Col and Eileen Davidson will celebrate fifty years of marriage on December 19th, 2014.

Their family have organised a special celebration to mark this milestone.

A young and handsome, Col Davidson married an equally young, but beautiful, Eileen Brown at St. Joseph’s Church in Orange on 19th December 1964 and they honeymooned at Lord Howe Island. Col and Eileen have been proud to spend all of their married life in Orange but have been fortunate to travel extensively, especially in recent years.

Col and Eileen are the parents of Lee,

Kylie (married to Tom Toberty and living in Orange), and Cameron (married to Tracy Kruger and living in Brisbane). They enjoy their four grandchildren John 10, Patrick 8, Elise 6 and Ann-Mary 2.

Col and Eileen have enjoyed their marvellous journey together and have enjoyed this opportunity to look back at the wonderful times they have shared, side by side; from special occasions - to simple daily pleasures, some tearful times along life’s way, some joys that can’t be measured…and they now look forward to making many more happy memories together.

WHO AM I?

I was born in London on April 14, 1904, given names Arthur John.

I studied at Westminster School and, rebelling against my parents’ wishes, took up acting.

By 1924 I was receiving rave reviews for my role as Romeo, and by 26 was in the lead role of Hamlet.

All up, I spent 80 years on stage, and seven decades working on films, beginning in the 1920s.

Predictably my film roles included several Shakespearean adaptations such as Julius Caesar (1953) and Richard III (1955).

My other notable films included The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968), Chariots of Fire (1981), Arthur (1981) and Gandhi (1982).

I was knighted in 1953 and was honoured on my 90th birthday when the Globe Theatre was renamed after me.

I died in 2000.

live music striking the right chord in 2014 Ash PritchArd looks bAck on some of whAt hAs stood out on live music scene this yeAr. It’s a hard gig to promote or organise any event; whether it be a live music concert, dance recital or fundraiser.

Sometimes there can be hoards show up.

Sometimes maybe five people will make an appearance.

Various changes regarding live music and gaming and liquor laws have seen it become tougher to get a chance to perform from a musician’s perspective and tougher for organisers, but they keep twanging on regardless.

Over the year we’ve seen the rise and fall of bands and events.

There have been some stellar international and national touring artists visit what they may deem as a quiet country town.

We’ve also seen the rise of some great original live acts, also the passing of some others (RIP Deprivation and Mary On A Shilling).

Jon Carter continues to keep live music alive with the monthly 4 on the 4loor showcases.

And Jack Bayada organised some great nights at the OXO. The Burn Card took their hard rock sound to the

We had Boy and Bear, Stonefield, Kate MillerHeidke, Lee Kernaghan, Adam Harvey, Travis Collins and Japanese punks Mustang Jerx visit.

Despite any setbacks; we’ve been pretty blessed really when you look back at it.

The fifth and final of the popular Wentworth Mine tours and talks hosted by Orange and District Historical Society will take place next Sunday, December 7th.

A mine tour will take place at 11am at the Wentworth Mine while the talk will take place at noon at the Lucknow Community Centre (the former Public School) in Newman Street. People are welcome to come to either one or both.

Tully Richards, Exploration Manager with Gold and Copper resources Pty Ltd, returns as our guest speaker. His subject will be ‘Searching for the Motherlode; current gold and mineral exploration in the Orange Region’. One could be forgiven for thinking, given it is over 170 years since the discovery of copper and 160 since the discovery of gold, that there would be nothing left to find but there is plethora of companies still carrying out exploration and scarcely a square centimetre of the region is not covered by exploration licences.

New technology enables the detection of deposits which have no traces on the surface and high prices and modern mining and processing technology enable the profitable exploitation of deposits that would have been hopelessly uneconomical not so many years ago.

Tully has a wonderful depth and breadth of experience in exploration in the district. A graduate in geology from Sydney University in 1993, initially he worked with Hargraves Resources on the Browns Creek mine and associated tenements, followed by four years in Western Australia from 1996-99 mining nickel and gold. Then it was back locally with Newcrest Mining at Cadia Valley to 2005 before two years with Rangott Mineral Exploration to 2007.

Since that time he has held his current position with Gold and Copper Resources based in Lucknow. The company has extensive licences not just at Lucknow but across the region. He knows

the geology, the techniques and the results of previous exploration and has a fair idea of what other companies in the area are achieving.

Participants are welcome to start with coffee from 10am at the Two Fat Ladies coffee shop, Lucknow, before the tour and for lunch at the Goldfields Tavern after the talk.

Parking is available at the Two Fat Ladies or at the picnic area on the northern side of the Wentworth Mine off Emu Swamp Road. There is plenty of parking at the Community Centre.

The site requires medium fitness with a 300 metre round trip including about 30 steps on a gravel surface.

The $5 entry fee for adults is payable at the bottom gate (free entry for children and pensioners).

Major boost for shiralee infrastructure

the awardiNg of the coNtract for the New water aNd sewer truNk maiNs is a major milestoNe for the developmeNt of the shiralee area.

Orange City Council’s Infrastructure Policy Committee chair, Cr Reg Kidd said the $1.8 million contract will see 7.8 kilometres of pipeline installed to the Shiralee area and two pump stations constructed.

“These are the main pipes which will take water in and sewerage out of the area, “Cr Reg Kidd said. “Once new subdivisions are built, the smaller pipes from those housing areas will be connected to these main pipes.”

Orange City Council is making arrangements with landholders in the path of the new pipelines to purchase land for the pipeline easements.

This major contribution to the future infrastructure of Orange is happening with the help of the NSW Government. This project is being enabled by a $2.36 million low-interest loan from the NSW Government under the LIRS scheme to support the work of getting new housing areas constructed. Once subdivisions start to appear in the area, developers will make a financial contribution to the council towards re-paying that loan.

It’s expected the construction work will begin in February and weather permitting will be completed by the end of June.

SHIRALEE : The first signs that the rural paddocks in south Orange have a future as a new housing area, will emerge when water and sewer mains are installed in the new year.

New year start for southerN feeder road the awardiNg of the coNtract for the first stage of the New southerN feeder road is a milestoNe for the city’s road Network, accordiNg to oraNge mayor johN davis.

“It will make for improved connections between the major highways into Orange, industrial areas like Leewood and key community infrastructure such as the health service and the new Shiralee housing area,” Cr Davis said.

Orange City Council Infrastructure Committee Chair, Cr Reg Kidd believes the success of the northern bypass, which has taken thousands of cars and trucks out of the main street of Orange, shows how important feeder and distributor roads like this are in a growing city like Orange.

“The Southern Feeder Road won’t be designed to carry the same heavy-duty volumes of traffic that the bypass does. It will run around the southern outskirts of Orange.”

Local firm Hamcom Civil has been awarded the $2.2 million contract to

Members of Council ‘s Parks and Gardens crew were pleased once again to be able to put up Christmas lights in Cook Park.

Orange City Council’s Services Committee Chair Cr Ron Gander the same tree on the Summer Street side of the park has again been used where it can be easily noticed by passing cars.

“There was such a great response from the public last year, that the decision was made to put up the lights again, “ Cr Ron Gander said.

“Last year people were stopping in Summer Street and taking photographs.

There were many fantastic comments on the park’s Facebook page. Families out walking in the cool of the evening were stopping to look at the tree. “ “Going out after dinner to look at the Christmas lights around town is a great way for families to get into the Christmas spirit.”

shiralee suburb design wins award the high quality of urbaN desigN iN oraNge city couNcil’s New shiralee housiNg area has picked up a major iNdustry award.

The design, which includes a range of house block sizes, waterways, parks and cycle-ways picked up two awards from the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects. Orange City Council took out the ‘Public Practice Achievement Award’ and urban design consultants Oculus won the award for Excellence in Planning.

Orange City Council’s Sustainable Development Chair, Cr Jeff Whitton has congratulated the council staff, consultants and members of the community who are contributed to the project.

“The Shiralee land release was a pioneering project for Orange City Council,” Cr Jeff Whitton said. “Rather than waiting for developers to set the tone of a new housing area, the Shiralee project saw the Council aiming to get in early before any subdivisions were proposed and with community consultation, put some high-quality urban principles in place.”

“For example, with high obesity rates in Australia it makes sense to encourage people to walk more and drive less. So, you’d

Just over 2,000 years ago, some men were camping overnight in the hills of Palestine.

They were not soldiers or on holidays. They were there to look after mobs of sheep, to protect them from wild animals – that was their job.

One night they were told the most amazing information by an angel from heaven: “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

Today in the town of David a saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”

This was big news, so they left their

sheep to go and find Mary and Joseph and the baby. “When they had seen him, they spread the word … and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.” Then “the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen”.

We are not guarding sheep outside of Bethlehem, but we are in no less need of a saviour now. Read more in the Bible, in Luke chapter 2 and beyond.

This event changed our world forever.

Canberra pull the offer The Canberra Raiders have ended negotiations with Sydney Roosters prop Jared WaereaHargreaves, showing they won’t be used as a bargaining chip.

The Raiders pulled their lucrative multiyear contract off the table after the 25-yearold New Zealand international did not confirm his intention to move to the national capital.

Waerea-Hargreaves was spotted having dinner with his partner at a restaurant on the Kingston Foreshore on December 6 and spent last weekend in Canberra, checking out the city.

The Raiders appeared to have produced an offer that was too good to refuse but, with Waerea-Hargreaves missing their deadline, he now looks likely to remain with the Roosters.

Waerea-Hargreaves is under contract with the Tricolours for next season, but is set to be one of the marquee names to hit the open market for 2016 and beyond.

Champions' Trophy reigns after Kookaburras lose to Germany Olympic gold medallists Germany quashed Australia’s bid to win a sixth successive Champions Trophy hockey title last Saturday, ousting the Kookaburras 3-2 in the semifinals.

The Germans, playing with seven of their junior World Cup winners of 2013, stunned Australia with two goals by the ninth minute.

They went up 3-0 immediately after halftime when Florian Fuchs took advantage of a goalmouth scramble and scooped the ball past goalkeeper Andrew Charter.

Australia hit back in the 34th minute and again in the 42nd but that was the end of the scoring for both sides.

The Kookaburras, who lost to Germany 4-2 the last time they met in the semi-finals of the 2012 London Olympics, were unable to equalise despite benching the goalkeeper to accommodate an extra striker.

The Snake grabs the PGA After seven long play-off holes, finally sinking the putt to seal victory, by his own admission, Greg Chalmers’ was “worn out, I was all over the place”.

Adam Scott must have been just as fatigued. Whereas Chalmers’ short game kept him alive, three times Scott landed the ball within comfortable and almost identical reach of the pin, yet couldn’t sink the putt that mattered. He finally threeputted to effectively hand the prize to Chalmers.

Chalmers had to come from the clouds for the win. For the regulation 18 holes, everything he’d struck turned to gold. He’d shot a competition-low score of 64, a round that included no bogeys and eight birdies, three of them in the difficult first four holes.

“It was an epic day,” he said.

“It would [have been] a very slim chance I’d be sitting here at this point today, with the quality of guys leading the tournament.

“But I got away to a fast start … All of a sudden I was -3 through four, and started to have a really good vibe about the day. And when you get in front of a golf course like that, particularly on a tough day, you just keep trying to give yourself chances, and I made some nice putts coming down the stretch.”

Chalmers had gone to the clubhouse the outright leader at -11, one ahead of Scott. It wasn’t long, though, before he was warming up again, with both Scott and Wade Ormsby re-joining him to force the playoff.

In the seven holes of the playoff, Chalmers could barely hit the fairway. Four times he found the sand; on another the trees. Scott though, just kept smacking the ball down the middle.

Ormsby wilted at the fourth play-off hole, after both Scott and Chalmers holed birdies.

Welfare/Case Officer Tabitha Johnstone said the gesture from the club was lovely and needed, especially at this time of year.

“When clubs or organizations bring money down like this it’s incredible. WE can’t thank them enough really” she said.

Tabitha said the money would go further toward help-

ing those families or individuals in need over the Christmas season.

Dave, Sammy, Meadsey, Jay and Paully you have no idea how proud you I am. As a senior member of the team, I stood proud wearing an Australian shirt and watching my boys who, compared to the field on paper simply are not as experienced or skilled as the power house nations from Europe, Asia and the Americas. We were David and they were Goliath. What we did have though, was heart! We had belief, we never gave up and we showed that the little guys, no matter how much of an underdog, can rise together and achieve history for their country! We won Bronze medals in the Trios and in the 5 person Teams event as Captain of the Aussie team I was so very proud to bring home medals in these events, last time Aussies came back with team medals was 40 years ago. I know that I will talk about this for a long time to come! Would also like to take this time to wish everyone a truly wonderful Christmas filled with fun and true Christmas Spirit and a Happy and Safe New Year.
