Hospital Project to aid reconciliation Orange Health Service is one of 18 hospitals across Australia that are part of the Lighthouse Hospital Project, a federally funded joint program by the Heart Foundation and the Australian Healthcare & Hospitals Association (AHHA) to transform the experience of healthcare for Indigenous patients by trying to make their environments more culturally safe.

Understanding the history behind why Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients are five times more likely to leave hospital against medical advice is key to achieving reconciliation in the hospital system, the Heart Foundation and AHHA said today.

This project is underway at Orange Health Service and aims to improve the experiences of Aboriginal patients while in hospital is an important step

towards reconciliation, Orange Lighthouse Project Officer, Mandy Debenham said ahead of Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June).

“We want to improve the hospital experience for Aboriginal people. This includes looking at ways to improve communication, the patient experience and care, staff knowledge and their cultural competency by providing targeted strategies to improve education for staff, understanding the Aboriginal patient journey and by providing a culturally appropriate and safe environment for Aboriginal people,” Mandy said.

“Improving the identification of Aboriginal patients when they present to hospital also ensures they receive the right service at the right time and can lead to earlier identification

of risk factors, better cultural understanding and better service provision and program planning.”

Dr Chris Bourke, a Gamillaroi man and Director of Strategic Programs at the AHHA, said the five dimensions of reconciliation – race relations, equality and equity, institutional integrity, unity and historical acceptance directly relate to the Lighthouse goal of achieving better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients who go to hospital after a heart attack.

20 years ago, the year was 1998 and live music was under attack by the onslaught of easy money flowing from poker machine revenue. Rooms previously set aside with a stage, two red lights and a dodgy PA, where punters sweated it out as beers flowed while live music pumped out from people playing instruments and singing, were quickly being converted and filled with flashing bandits that could empty a pay packet with a few presses of the button.

In this environment Jon Carter who had been involved in booking bands for different venues that could draw a crowd, noticed that there was a gap in the live music scene in Orange. There wasn’t much opportunity for acts that were taking their first steps in performing before an audience or those who didn’t have enough

STEVE BALBI Steve Balbi was a founding member of Noiseworks in the 80’s and co-wrote one of their biggest hits ‘Touch’. He has also been a member of the Electric Hippies.

He has worked as a session player with many artistS including in 1999, providing vocals and guitar for David Bowie’s Hours, a lost gem of an album. His talents also extend to the producers’ chair where he has spent time with the Little River Band, Jenny Morris, Pearls and Swine and Christine Anu to name a few.

Steve Balbi released his debut solo LP, Black Rainbow (2013) followed by its ‘surreal edition’ featuring remixes and reworks including a fantastic version of ‘Touch’ (2016). A new album has been recorded, which was inspired by ten photographs from Brandon Stanton’s Humans

Jessica Irwin is an illustrator, author, photographer, web designer, and musician.

Jessica also has some physical limitations. Her mind and eyes are the only things that she has full control over due to her Cerebral Palsy. However with the use of innovative eye-controlled music software “Atmosphere” developed by Dr Jordan Nguyen, which allows people living with high-level physical disability to make music. This has enabled Jessica to realise a lifelong dream to create music and allowed her to collaborate with Steve Balbi, one of her musical heroes.

Steve Balbi will be in Orange to entertain music fans with music covering his career and tracks from his new album. A charismatic performer in a live setting, means that this is an evening that you don’t want to miss.

Saturday May 5 marked the 20-year Anniversary show at the Victoria Hotel which was crowded with punters who had come to celebrate this milestone with Marc Fitzgerald Cooke opening the evening, his mellow acoustic set provided an inviting feel in the room as punters were still arriving and catching up with each other. Haylee Gallagher warmed the crowd up some more with a set of happy strummy eclectic covers ranging from Norah Jones to Radiohead. 4loor veteran Steve Rutherford delivered a well-received set of folk tunes including his Ode to the Pussycat which appeared on the 4on4loor 1st Gear CD back in 2005 (when is the next CD coming out Jon?). The 4loor has had artists like Amber Cashel who not only cut their teeth there but have also influenced others to take up the craft. Ado got the crowd singing along during his set of tried and true covers with a chant of 4on4loor 20 years more.

The evening had to end and end it did in style with the sonic experience that is IO, the rhythm section of James Buchannan on bass and Albie Bevan on drums laid down rock steady grooves providing a bed for Steve Somerville to execute shape shifting exploits on the fretboard that went from light almost ambient tones that suddenly soared off into the stratosphere propelling the room to another dimension.

The evening ended with Jon being presented with the flyer for the show signed by all the musicians who played on the night. Long may the 4loor rock.

Events at Orange City Library Author, Amanda Hampson

Orange City Library is buzzing with events over the next couple of weeks including story time, page-turners, and an author talk.

Story times at the library are engaging and lots of fun. They read and tell stories, sing songs, play games and do craft. Story time is free and suitable for pre-school children, with each session lasting about half an hour. You can enjoy story time at Orange City Library on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays during school term at 11am.

Do you love reading and always looking for the next great book?

Then come along to Pageturners where each month you discover different authors, topical themes

and thought-provoking reads.

The group usually meets on the second Wednesday of the month from 5.30pm-7pm. The next meeting will be held on June 13 and the book discussion will be on Jo Nesbo’s Macbeth.

Author Amanda Hampson will be giving a talk on June 28 at 5.30pm on her latest book ‘The Yellow Villa’. If you have ever dreamed of moving to France or Italy to seek ‘the good life’ you will find this book a fascinating and highly entertaining read.
