Because of her, we can A powerful sentence with a powerful meaning, ‘Because of Her, We Can’ is this year’s NAIDOC week theme, celebrating the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made, and continue to make - to our communities, families and beyond. Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer, Donna Monaghan is the perfect example of this, Donna has been in Orange for 12 years and has spent that time

working to build bridges between community and services as well as volunteering her time in everything and anything she can, whether it be involved with the Elders group or in our schools. Donna said, “I spent nine years in Glenroi school as the schools Learning Support Officer, I was also involved in sporting groups and encouraging kids to get out and be active. I love seeing the kids grow and become a part of the community.

I think it’s important for the kids to see us as community driven, they see role models and they’re inspired to be like them.” Aunty Alice Williams and Donna Monaghan are pictured with girls involved in the ‘Designing Future Program’. The ‘Designing Future Program’ held at the Community Youth Centre, looks at engaging girls from years 3-6, giving them the confidence and empowering them to do their best.
