How are we all going negotiating these crazy times? I shudder to think what some people are going through and for those fleeting moments that I try to contemplate what life in Victoria is like right now, I just can’t imagine. Walkabout

to Work — MELISE COLEMAN —

23-year-old Tyrone Sullivan has just this week, finished his four-year painting apprenticeship with thanks to the guidance from Train 365’S ‘Walkabout to Work Program.’

Something he should feel pretty darn proud about.

T

he Walkabout to Work program offers opportunities for Indigenous people to gain work. It was created in 2015 by Brad and Kim Draper after they saw a need to train Indigenous people in the Construction, Mining, Transport, Earthmoving and Agricultural fields.

The training covers areas including White Card, Confined Space, Working at Heights, Elevated Work Platform, Power tools, Calculations and Measurements and Forklift.

Brad explained, “Many Indigenous people were simply not making it to the entry level interview 6

process of jobs due to their inexperience and lack of skills and High-Risk Licences. These skills and licences put them on an equal platform with other job seekers when applying for jobs.”

It’s about presenting opportunities to these young people. Me being a Wiradjuri man, I know what it’s like to try and get that kickstart. We think it’s important to give these skills to young people so they can deal with the pressures of life at the moment, there are a lot of pressures.”

Once completed, participants were given the opportunity of work experience within local industries with many gaining employment or apprenticeships. With a 90% success rate of these participants entering fulltime and casual work.

Tyrone Sullivan is one of the highly inspirational individuals.

“There’s no way I can thank Kim and Brad,” Tyrone gushed, “The opportunities they have both given me, I’m glad they gave me that push and the kick up the backside that I needed.”

“We knew Tyrone had so much potential,” said Kim. “We are so proud of him.”

Tyrone mentioned he was finding it hard to know where to begin with looking for work and when he found it, wasn’t getting very far with the process, even after the many TAFE courses under his belt.

That is until he came across Train 365.

“It feels so good to make other people proud, like my Mum, even the Aboriginal community, all of the young ones looking up to me,” said Tyrone.

“I had to stick it out and push myself. It was hard I’m not going to lie, but it’s worth it in the end.

“I’m looking forward to one day starting a business and maybe employing some young Aboriginal people, to get them going and encourage them and I’m really looking forward to being a boss.”

The program has also had a huge impact on Tyrone’s community aspirations too.

“I want to do as much as I can and get more involved with the community whether its sports or other things. I was offered a chance to do some motivational speaking- I’m willing to do that. That’s a start and hopefully this gives me more opportunities to grow.”

The Walkabout to Work program and its success was recognised by The NSW Deputy Minister at the time John Barrilaro and NSW State Training who then funded the program in 2017/2018. The team had over 175 participants register and complete the course throughout the Central West.

It brings me so much joy now. No longer am I living through anxiety, depression and confusion of not knowing what I’m doing. I know what I’m doing – I know where I’m going. I’m more certain about things now and I have a lot more drive and ambition to what I used to have.

I know what it can bring for me and the aboriginal community and those around me, especially my brothers and sisters (I come from a big family). I tell them every day ‘I don’t want this success on my own, I want you guys all with me.”

Tyrone has now worked for ‘Zoran Mustac Painting’ for four years and mentioned how grateful he was

The program is completely funded for all Indigenous participants and the Train 365s mobile training van can now travel to communities for training. This program is the perfect introduction to gain skills and High-risk Licences to enhance employment prospects.

Not my typical comment this week, but something that I hope you’ll like.

There’s a song and saying that goes something like everything old is new again. That came to mind this week when I decided to re-introduce our Birthday File again. For those not familiar with the name, a few years back we used to run a weekly listing of people who were celebrating birthdays during the coming week, we called it The Birthday File.

End of the Road Well, we’ve finally hit it. The end of the road for Melise travels.

Thank you for following along. I hope it gave you some kind of reprieve from reality or fuelled that travelling bug even more. There are so many amazing places to see, even here in Aus. For me, the next travel adventure will focus on the top end of Australia! But, for now, I’m now handing the reins over to you. This space will be for our readers to show off the amazing region we live in. Whatever it is- we want to see it! The rolling hills, the canola crops, the country highways.

You can send us the names and birthdays of anyone at any time, we’ll just add them to our list and when the date comes around, we’ll publish

them. It’s pretty simple and it’ll be a bit of fun, everyone, whether they admit it or not, likes it when someone remembers their birthday.

Each week, we’ll publish the names of those whose birthday is coming up during the following week, along with the date. Our Birthday File will appear on the bottom of our Competition page in future. To make room for it, we’ll move our What Shop is It Competition to a new page we’re starting called Hearts for Orange.

DONATION DOLLAR a daily reminder to give In a world first, the Royal Australian Mint has launched a coin designed to be donated and to encourage Australians to give back to those who need it most.

illions of the specially minted Donation Dollars, inscribed with the phrase ‘give to help others,’ will be released into circulation over the coming years.

The idea is to promote charitable behaviours and be a regular reminder to Australians, who have the means to give, to do so and help those who need it most.

“If every Australian donated a Donation Dollar just once a month, it has the potential to raise an additional 300 million dollars annually for those who need it most. So, with Australia’s support, we believe Donation Dollar has the power to make a real difference,” said Royal Australian Mint CEO, Ross MacDiarmid.

A Donation Dollar is legal tender and can be spent or saved just like any other one-dollar coin. The hope is that Australians could see

them as a daily reminders to give — not just in times of crisis, but all year around, in smaller amounts, more often.

“The power lies in the hands of the receiver to decide where their coin will make the most impact. For example, they can donate it to their charity of choice, to a struggling business, or to anyone in need,” said Mr MacDiarmid.

A first run of 3 million Donation Dollar coins have been released into circulation and the Royal Australian Mint intends to mint millions more — one for every Australian – and release them into circulation over the coming years.

Chair of The Community Council for Australia and Former Chief Executive of World Vision Australia, Tim Costello, has shared his praise and support for Donation Dollar and the difference it will make for those who need a helping hand:

“Our immediate reaction when presented with the Donation Dollar was ‘finally an idea that unites every Australian charity, but also every Australian, in a common good’,” Mr Costello said.

“With research showing almost one in five Australians, who don’t currently give to charity at all, saying the coin would lead to them giving more to charity, there’s no doubt in my mind this is a gift that will benefit those who are most vulnerable in our nation, starting now – a time when many need this kind of helping hand the most.”

Chris reminisces Olympic honour Can you believe it has been 20 years since the torch relay for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games traversed the Central West?

O

ne Orange local who most certainly remembers the occasion is Chris Gryllis. Step into his McNamara Street real estate office and you are immediately greeted with walls adorned with photos, newspaper clippings and commemorative badges from the Sydney Games.

“I bought everything I could purchase, memorabilia — including the torch! — and all the badges for this event. It is something that it is once in a lifetime,” said Chris.

“It was a big event for Australia, and it was equally as big or bigger than any event I’d ever experienced at the time in Orange.”

— JONATHAN ROE — Missing out on the first ballot for torch bearers, Chris was thrilled when he made the cut after additional numbers were added to the relay.

“I was lucky enough to be one of the last 1000 people! It was nice a good feeling, I have good, fond memories,” said Chris, for whom the Olympics hold a special place due to his Greek heritage.

“There were a lot of thoughts that came into my mind; feeling privileged to live in Australia and because my connection with the Old Country…

“Carrying the torch, I had every intention to hold it and just more or less enjoy it as long as I could, but for some unknown reason as soon as I held the torch it was as if I had an outboard and I just ran! I have plenty of happy memories

from that event!”

For some years after the relay, Chris and other local torch bearers would meet up annually for a cup of tea or coffee at a local venue.

“I believe the relay of the flame it really created some unification in the whole country. Everyone I spoke with during that time and ever since then, they are still talking about how good it was. It created some unification, it created sort of a lot of pride and privilege to be part of that big world-wide event.

“I was very lucky to experience that feeling carrying the torch and many people I know that carried the torch either here or elsewhere are of the same opinion… seriously, the feeling at the time it was indescribable.”

Allan Adams is turning his modest city block into a compact food growing system and is hoping to one day help others do the same.

“In many ways it could be a life’s work,” says Allan Adams of his home garden.

Talking people through everything he has planted can take well over an hour, says Allan, and once you start to look more closely you can understand why. The variety of plants in a relatively small space is surprising, but from the bay tree front hedge to the chicken run on the rear fence of the property, everything in Allan’s garden serves a purpose.

“The idea was to turn the garden into a complete food system,” he says, “and we definitely are growing a lot of our own food… we have got bees and chickens and a pretty big system running.”

It was actually the dream of a self-reliant lifestyle that first brought Allan and his wife to Orange nearly 20 years ago.

“We started looking at the old school idea of self-sufficiency. Did you ever see The Good Life? That classic English show? So we got thinking about it, we were extremely naive at that point, but we

thought if we are going to do it we really should learn how to really grow stuff,” said Allan, who enrolled in an organic farming course being offered in Orange.

But it also happened that not long after they arrived here that there was a new degree being offered through Sydney University in ecological agriculture.

“It was completely new, different take on farming and how to think about agriculture,” said Allan, who despite hating his school years, found himself going on to do Honours, and then complete a PhD in the ecophysiology of wetlands.

The self-sufficient dream got put on the backburner through those years, said Allan, although they never stopped gardening.

“Wherever we were living — it was mostly rentals for that period — we were growing things and trying to learn about all that basic stuff of how do you grow amazing carrots, and how do you grow tomatoes… the idea has always been not just do it, but to do it the

best you can and really do it well, but that whole self-sufficient thing kind of got lost,” he said.

Eventually buying their own place, Allan and his wife embarked on their current garden build four years ago and are happy to be seeing their work bear fruit.

“This is coming into the fourth Spring of what was kind of 20 years in the making in many ways; 20 years of study and growing in various spots, to finally getting our own place where we could go really into this as deep as we can, and that is what we are doing,” he said.

Allan said it has been years since he and his family have bought eggs, and their hothouse kept them in leafy greens right through the winter. In their first year of keeping bees, their hive produced 12 kilograms of honey, some of which is being made into mead.

And with the amount of rain we have had in Orange already this season, he is predicting a bountiful year from their young but

developing garden.

“We are getting to the point where all of the work is starting to pay off and we can start to see all the fruit trees we’ve had in for a few years — we have had reasonable sort of crops from them, but we should get a lot more this year,” he said.

“I think in another five or six years, we’ll to get it to a point where it will be around as productive as it can be and you are really just into a system then, things are producing each year and you know pretty much how many potatoes you are going to get, you know how much pumpkin you are getting, you’ve ironed out all the little odd things.

“So, there are still quite a few years of working through all that and choosing different plants because we are just trialling and looking at so many.”

Allan prefers talking about being ‘self-reliant’ rather than ‘self-sufficient’ as the later term can often lead people to think of doomsday preppers or those looking to disappear completely off the grid.

Being fully self-sufficient is also quite hard to do, especially on an urban block.

“The land you’d need!” said Allan. “Yeah, there are people who have several acres where you could be growing wheat, because flour is always the thing you are trying to find…

“We are interested in exploring the potential of small spaces and that has become a very big thing lately on Instagram and all that, and that is where we have found ourselves.”

Allan uses no pesticides or herbicides in their garden, preferring to

work towards a natural balance of insect predators to keep pest numbers down. It does mean accepting some crop losses as inevitable.

“One year we were almost getting a punnet of strawberries every couple of days from our patch but we were probably losing that much as well to slaters and slugs, but we just accept that that is part of the system and the insects that are eating your crops means that there will be predatory insects that will come in over time and we have seen that,” he said.

And maintaining a garden like this does take work — hours of work most days and a lot of time on the weekend. It may not be for everybody, not that Allan sees any of it as a chore.

Growing your own food has great health benefit and it is obviously good for the environment, said Allan who also gets a lot of satisfaction in doing it.

“The feeling that I grew this. I didn’t need to go to the shops. Just the feeling of being able to have some sort of influence over your existence. Not everyone would value that, but I do place a lot of value on it,” he said.

Allan would one day like to use the knowledge he has gained through study and practice to help others start producing food, whether it be in their back yards, verandas or small balconies.

His key bit of advice to new gardeners is to start small and take the time to observe your plants as they grow.

“Just pick one or two plants — potatoes would be a great one now in Orange. And it doesn’t have to be a massive area… pick one or two plants, do a bit of research and then be keen with your observations. Start small, but don’t neglect it. You’ve got to pay attention and commit to it.”

Farm to Organisation INFORMATION SESSIONS — MELISE COLEMAN —

Local producers, farmers and organisations are encouraged to attend two upcoming information sessions in Blayney and Molong to learn more about ‘Farm to Organisation’, an initiative of Regional Development Australia (RDA) Central West.

‘Farm to Organisation’ is a first of its kind approach to creating new pathways for producers and farmers to market directly to local businesses, organisations, and institutions such as schools, restaurants and health facilities.

This venture, supported by Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations and Charles Sturt University, aims to deliver economic benefits to Central West producers and communities with the added health benefits of consuming fresh locally sourced food.

RDA Central West CEO, Sam Harma said the information sessions being held this month are an opportunity for local farmers, producers, buyers and businesses to find out how they can work together to make ‘Farm to Organisation’ a reality.

“The Central West is home to some of the best producers in the state and we hope that through ‘Farm to Org.’ we can create a stronger local supply chain,” said Mr Harma.

“We would all like to buy and consume more

locally produced food to support our farmers, but we also know that reducing food miles is better for the environment and our health.

“I know there’s some logistics to overcome but let’s make it happen! The project seems like the Central West’s opportunity to create a win/win outcome for us all if you ask me.”

Senior Diversional Therapist, Marlene Simonson said there have been so many positive changes in their clients since the introduction of Douglas.

“He has won over the hearts of staff but more importantly the clients,” said Marlene. “Since the introduction of Douglas, we have seen clients who normally do not interact now chatting about him. Our clients have become more relaxed and willing to take on responsibilities to care for Douglas also.

“It’s so wonderful to see how excited the clients get to introduce Douglas to their families.

The Macquarie unit worked with Spotless, Sister Mary Trainer Bloomfield Auxiliary and Nestle Purina PetCare for our newest resident.”

The unit has two living areas and Douglas spends his time between both. It’s said that at night, even though there are several beds set up for him, he’s often found keeping one of the client’s company.

Spotless organised the purchase of a dog kennel, lead, water and food bowls. Sr. Mary Trainer from Bloomfield Auxiliary was approached, and they contributed $620 towards purchase of Douglas and ongoing costs. Nestle Purina Blayney also donated food for life for Douglas.

“The Macquarie unit both clients and staff are very thankful for the donation,” said Marlene. “We held an appreciation morning tea for everyone who helped make this possible. Partners were then presented with a certificate of appreciation.”

“It was very heart-warming to see the willingness from others to help support this fantastic project.”

It will also create new jobs and, as Minister for Decentralisation, I am currently looking at ways that we can bring some of those new jobs to rural and regional Australia.

We’ve set national targets to reduce the total waste generated in Australia by 10% per person, and to reduce, reuse and recycle

JOBKEEPER EXTENDED Orange workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to receive financial support from the Australian Government into next year, with legislation to extend the JobKeeper payment passing through Parliament last week.

The next stage of JobKeeper – from September until March 2021 – will be a two-tiered payment: • From September to December, payments will be $1,200 per fortnight per employee, or $750 for workers who • were employed for less than 20 hours a week.

• Then from January to the end of March, payments will be $1,000 per fortnight per employee, or $650 for workers who were employed for less than 20 hours a week.

SUPPORTING FARMERS DURING COVID-19 My Australian Government colleagues and I have been working hard to help our local agriculture industry get through this pandemic.

There’s more work to be done, but the National Agriculture Workers Code that was recently adopted by the Commonwealth, New South Wales, ACT, Northern Territory, South Australia and Victoria are a step in the right direction.

The Agriculture Workers’ Code delivers consistent approaches to facilitate the movement of critical agricultural industry workers across domestic borders where border restrictions are in place.

It’s a risk-based approach. Permits or an equivalent approval, with appropriate conditions, will be applied to reduce the risk of COVID-19 being transmitted to regional areas.

National Cabinet also codified the Freight Protocol, ensuring freight can keep moving efficiently and safely.

These measures are significant as we work towards our target to reopen Australia by Christmas.

ince forming to give voice to women of the Central West who want to make a difference, the Central West Women’s Forum (CWWF), has hosted four inspirational guest speakers in Orange including the Australian Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley. But with the current COVID restrictions on travel, the Governor requested a virtual meeting last Friday (28 August) with the Executive of the CWWF to understand more about the objectives

and progress of the organisation.

Tracey Holdsworth, Lee Blume, Anne Smart, Amanda Spalding and Jane Merkel discussed the activities of the CWWF with Her Excellency and husband Dennis Wilson, while they both talked about their experience of women still facing problems in fields like the legal profession.

Lee Blume and Gerri Colless talked about the COVID-19 Impact Support Group that will be bringing together speakers from TAFE, Charles Sturt

University and Verto to advise on free and inexpensive courses for people to train for new careers. That event will be held via Zoom on Tuesday 13th October from 12 noon to 1pm.

Her Excellency asked for an invitation and hopes to join the Zoom event, and to come to Orange as a guest speaker once travel restrictions are lifted.

Local snake catcher Jake Hansen

“The dream would be for people not to need to call me anymore,” said local snake catcher Jake Hansen of the Orange Snake Service.

“They might think, oh well last time I called Jake and I saw him catch that brown snake and it wasn’t trying to bite him, it was just trying to get away, so maybe they are not that aggressive and maybe I don’t have to worry that much about it being around… that would be the ideal situation.”

Jake says he can’t remember exactly when it was that he became interested in reptiles, but it has been an interest he has actively pursued for most of his life.

“I remember asking Mum once, when did I start to show and interest in reptiles and she said you were in nappies walking around the garden catching lizards!” he said.’

“It is just something I’ve always enjoyed learning about and I’ve kept a lot of captive snakes and I like getting out in the wild and finding snakes.”

Going out and looking for herpetofauna — snakes, lizards, and amphibians — is known as ‘Herping,’ I learn from Jake.

“It is a bit like people who go birdwatching, except I go looking for snakes and reptiles and photographing them as well. I just like to see them in the wild…

“So that was something I do anyway on weekends and in my free time, so I figured if I’m going to be out catching snakes, I may as well make myself useful and do it for people if they need me.”

“Statistically, a lot more dangerous things are likely to happen to you around the home than being bitten by a snake,” said Jake, who believes most snakes are killed needlessly because of fear and a lack of understanding about the animals.

“About 50 percent of the snakes I get called for are Highland Copperheads, but 40 to 45 per cent are Eastern Browns,” he said.

“I understand people killing snakes if they are close to their home. I understand why, in their mind, they think are doing the right thing and the safest thing — the reality is they’re not, but in their mind they are...

“Then there are some Red-bellied Black Snakes around, but they tend to be confined to particular areas. They are a bit more prominent out towards Ophir and Clifton Grove, out that way, but they are not as widely distributed as Highland Copperheads and Eastern Browns.

“But one thing I don’t have much time for is the bravado around it and people taking photos of themselves holding up dead snakes like it is some sort of accomplishment… people revelling in the killing of a snake, that’s what I find pretty deplorable, but I understand exactly why people kill snakes, so I don’t tend to get too bent out of shape about it anymore.”

“Between those three that is pretty much going to cover 99.9 percent of snakes that someone runs into."

Snakes get a lot of bad press in Australia. Yes, our country is home to some of the most venomous snake species in the world, but the chances of being bitten and dying from a snake bite are actually quite small.

A review of ten years of animal-related deaths in Australia revealed snakes as being responsible for fewer deaths than bees, and just a small fraction of those killed annually by horses, cows and dogs.

It is something Jake is keen to try an educate people about as the fear around snakes is not really proportionate to the danger they pose.

“A lot of it is just counselling,” he says. “People ring up in a panic and so I talk them through why the snake they saw was a Copperhead and while they are venomous they are very timid snakes and virtually no one is bitten by them — you have to really go out of your way to be bitten by them — so you try to convince people to leave it alone.

...If you can get away from the fear, they are quite interesting animals to observe, so sit back and watch them like you would any other sort of animal...

So, what should you do when you see a snake in your backyard?

“You don’t really have to do anything, that’s the thing,” said Jake. “If you see an adult snake on your property, that snake didn’t just materialise out of nowhere. That snake has spent its whole life in that area and it has probably been in your backyard before, but you just happened to come out of your back door and see it out in the open, whereas five minutes prior or a couple minutes later and it would have slithered off.

“So you don’t really have to do anything, I think. Stand back and watch them. If you can get away from the fear, they are quite interesting animals to observe, so sit back and watch them like you would any other sort of animal and you might learn some things about the wildlife around you.”

COUNCIL AT WORK City’s hounds’ new pound opens in November

Orange’s $1.5 million pound is less than three months from completion as work on the fit-out of the facility starts.

Orange City Council awarded the $324,000 fit-out of the Orange City Pound to a Central West business, Inscape Projects, at the Council meeting last week.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said the new facility was expected to open in November.

“This facility will be one of the best in the state with large exercise yards, a hydro bath for all dogs who enter the facility, a dedicated visiting veterinarian room and isolation rooms for sick pets,” Cr Kidd said.

“The facility at Astill Drive can hold 30 dogs and 18 cats and will have after hours dropoff cages.

“The after-hours drop off kennels were a feature the community had asked for, through our Companion Animals Community Committee, and we were able to discuss this particular need and ensure it featured in the final design.

“I’d like to thank the community and the committee for the patience shown in getting this project off the ground.

“We’ve had a few unexpected setbacks but we’re now on the countdown.”

Previously, the Orange branch of the RSPCA managed the city’s stray pets on Council’s behalf but decided not to continue with the arrangement in 2017.

Since then, Council temporarily placed the city’s stray pets at a private facility, with the intention to build its own permanent facility.

Orange City Council’s Companion Animals Community Committee Chair Stephen Nugent said he was pleased to see the facility near completion.

Council to fire the starting gun on Future City plans to transform Orange’s CBD The next step in an ambitious fiveyear plan to transform the centre of Orange has been adopted by Orange City Council.

After two years of research and design by expert consultants, guided by a community panel, a hundred potential ideas were drafted and put on exhibition for community comment.

Now a short-list of key projects has been assembled in a three-year timetable, aimed at: - making the CBD a more walkable city centre, - encouraging more people to come to the CBD and spend more time there, - supporting current businesses and creating a CBD which will attract new investment.

Mayor Reg Kidd has welcomed the release of the Future City plans.

“Our expert consultants and the community panel have been working away for a long time on this plan and I’m delighted to see some concrete plans emerge,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “We want a CBD that our local community can be proud of, a place where they’ll want to spend time and will be easier for them to move around.”

Committee chair Cr Jeff Whitton believes the Future City plan is deliverable.

“The first year of the implementation plan floats a short-list of projects that will have the most impact and will be achievable in the short-term,” Cr Jeff Whitton said.

“The list for the following two years lets us tackle projects that are just as, if not more important, but will take a bit longer to get started.”

Orange City Council Employment and Economic Committee chair Cr Tony Mileto is pleased to see the list of projects.

“I’m delighted by the sheer scope of these projects,” Cr Tony Mileto said. “Our CBD, our local businesses deserve much more than a few new planter boxes. These plans aim to transform the way people move through our CBD, making it an attractive place to live and work.”

Inherit: old and new histories, Orange Regional Museum’s new long-term exhibition showcasing the significant history of the region, open now.

Inherit brings together both familiar and less well-known stories from across the Central West. Exploring our region’s history, the exhibition highlights big events and significant personalities, as well as the lives and experiences of everyday people.

Inherit features more than 100 museum objects to tell these stories. Many are drawn from Orange Regional Museum’s own collection, while others have been generously loaned by 42 community-run museums, public museums and individual collectors.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said he was delighted to take a sneak peek at the exhibition just before it opens to the public.

“This exhibition is one that will connect with everyone who walks through the door in one way or another,” Cr Kidd said.

“There are over one hundred artefacts from around the Central West on display, which is fantastic to see.

“I’d like to thank them for their dedication and care in reuniting the city’s lost pets.

“One object which caught my interest is the can of ‘Mt Canobolas Ozone’ which was sold as a novelty souvenir of the Orange Cherry Blossom Festival back in the 60s.

“The new facility at Narambla will provide a high-standard of care for the city’s stray pets and will be an easily accessible venue for people who are looking for a new family pet and would prefer to adopt one.

“However, we ideally don’t want any pets to end up at the new facility. Instead, microchip your pets, put an identification tag on their collars, fix fences and keep them inside during thunderstorms.”

- The most recent Orange City Council meeting held on Tuesday 1 September 2020 approved a recommendation to demolish a toilet block on Perry Oval and erect a new building. It’s expected the new toilet will be built on the Clinton Street side of Perry Oval and will cost around $85,000 from the NSW Government’s Resources for Regions fund.

CWA Take a Stand for the Community — MELISE COLEMAN —

The financial impact of the pandemic has been felt across the board but many of the hardest hit are those studying or considering future study. In saying that, we are so lucky to have organisations like the Country Women’s Association doing great things in our community.

The Country Women’s Association (CWA) of NSW is the largest women’s organisation in Australia and aims to improve conditions for country women and children. It recognises the importance of supporting continuing and further education and each year offers a variety of education grants to help people with the costs of their education. These grants are available for members, relatives of members and there are even some grants available for non-members.

The CWA grants available in 2020 include: JEAN MARTIN/LOUIE JEAN MERCER PERFORMING ARTS EDUCATION GRANT To be awarded in the area of the Arts to a boy or girl up to the age of 25 years with demonstrated artistic ability.

IRENE ASHTON MEMORIAL EDUCATION GRANT For a student to assist with secondary or tertiary education.

JOPLING EDUCATION GRANT For a child or grandchild of a member to assist with secondary school education.

PHYLLIS KINDON HUMANITARIAN AWARD For a CWA member who devotes care and attention to a disabled or aged person. There

are many ways in which this Award can be used, for example, to pay for someone to care for the handicapped or aged person whilst the member takes a holiday, or for the purchase of equipment to make the task of caring easier.

CYNTHIA DRUITT EDUCATION GRANT To be awarded to a Hospitality student who is currently undertaking an accredited advanced hospitality course and is related to a current financial member. The student must have successfully completed the first year of the course to be eligible.

PALLIATIVE CARE NURSE EDUCATION GRANT

Statistics show that one woman is killed every nine days and one man is killed every 29 days in a domestic violence-related situation. One in six women and one in 16 men in Australia have experienced physical or sexual violence from a current or previous cohabiting partner.

THE COUNTRY WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF NSW WILL ALSO MARK ITS ANNUAL AWARENESS WEEK FROM SEPTEMBER 6 TO 13 AND IS ASKING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY TO TAKE A STAND AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN THEIR OWN TOWNS AND SUBURBS. This year’s Awareness Week is shining the spotlight on domestic violence and the confronting statistics that underline the need for urgent action in the areas of support services, perpetrator rehabilitation and prevention programs, particularly in rural and regional NSW, where this kind of assistance can be hours away.

Members endorsed policy motions earlier in the year that urged governments to consider domestic violence as a ‘national emergency,’ and called for the utilisation of existing research and implementation of relevant recommendations and best practice relating to protecting survivors of domestic violence. This includes recommendations from the Australian Law Reform Commission’s family law review and the National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety.

If you remember the weekend of 10/11 August - the snowy weekend - the temperature hovered around 0.5C to 1.5C and the calculated apparent temperature ranged from around -5C to -10C. The more the wind blew (gusting between 25 and 60km/hr) the colder it felt.

The air temperature as measured by a thermometer is not affected by air movement. If the temperature is 15C the thermometer reads 15 no matter what.

That used to be called the “wind chill factor” but now goes by the name of “apparent temp.” Bear in mind that the body is centrally heated and has a cooling system (perspiration) that comes into play when we start to feel hot. The perspiration is the same as the water on that wet piece of fabric on the thermometer and the evaporating perspiration cools the body. More air movement and the body feels colder.

Back to the Bureau of Meteorology. Their weather data quotes an “apparent temp” temperature based on: • the actual temperature - the thermometer temperature • the wind speed • the humidity From these they calculate an “apparent temp” temperature.

The humidity is there because it plays a part in how readily perspiration evaporates. Low humidity more evaporation more cooling, high humidity less evaporation less cooling.

And you didn’t raise the subject but there are other indices to contend with, more relevant to hotter humid places. http://www.bom.gov.au/info/thermal_stress/ The more humid the weather is, the less that human perspiration can work to cool the body down. Under these conditions the body can approach or tip over into heat stress which can cause illness or in extreme cases be fatal. The original index was developed by the US military but more recently the indices have been used to develop guidelines for outdoor manual labour and sporting events when conditions of temperature and/or humidity become extreme. And the respective employers or promoters don’t want to be sued!!!

Similar guidelines operate for intensive livestock held in sheds or feedlots though naturally animals can’t add or shed clothing to cope with change the way humans can.

And regarding the rest of your paragraph….I presume you’ve heard the expression: “He uses statistics as a drunk uses a lamppost - for support rather than illumination”

The Orange City Council Youth Awards is looking to recognise and celebrate our young people who are making significant contributions, whether it be in education, community work, sport, culture, the arts or the environment.

Nominations are open to local young people aged 12-25 years, with monthly winners selected by an independent panel and go into the running for the Orange Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year Award.

ORANGE VINNIES VAN RESUMES The Orange Vinnies Van service will resume the week beginning Monday 7th September. Phil Donnan, Regional Director North West Region of St Vincent de Paul Society stated, “we are very pleased to announce that from next week the Vinnies Van service will once again be out and about in the Orange community”.

The fortnightly Van/Café service went into in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 restrictions. “We know the cessation of the Vinnies Van/Café service has impacted on our community and recommencing Van services brings back the community support we know is needed. During the recess we have worked with our sandwich makers, van volunteers, cooks and servers to create the new ways of working in a Covid safe way” said Mr Donnan. “Our volunteers are ready to go and will be strictly adhering to all COVID safe working practices”.

At this stage Vinnies are only re-starting the Van service on a fortnightly basis on a Monday and Wednesday evening. The Friday fortnightly Café lunch will not be resuming until after a further review. “We will continue to assess the resumption of the Café service over the coming weeks”, said Mr Donnan. “Seating patrons and serving a lunch all have a unique set of COVID safe requirements that we are still working through. We will let the community know when the Café is back up and running.”

“I would like to thank all of the Vinnies Van/Café volunteers who are returning to work to ensure this valuable community service is once again out there meeting a real community need”, said Mr Donnan.

Applications for funding through the Country Arts Support Program (CASP) is now open.

An annual small grants program, CASP looks to fund community driven arts and cultural activities for regionally based groups.

Grants of up to $3,000 are available for projects including but not limited to: workshops, arts activities as part of community festivals or events, artist-inresidence programs, public art and, design projects, performances, arts and cultural directories, community seminars and forums Exhibitions, or other local arts initiatives.

Applications for the Country Arts Support Program are open and will close Tuesday 29 September 2020 at 5pm.

If you are interested in applying, make sure you contact Arts Out West, as consulting with your local Regional Arts Development Organisation is one of the conditions of eligibility.

Arts Out West are also there to help with your application and to make sure you are on the right track.
