Erin Naden and Gerald Power serving up some First Nation Cuisine

Feeding an appetite for reconciliation — JONATHAN ROE —

Gerald Power looks forward to a time when Indigenous Australian foods like emu and warrigal greens will become as common a sight on Aussie dining tables as steak and mash, ‘spag bol’ or a mid-week curry.

“It is just exciting. It is absolutely positive. I have to force them out the gate to get them to go down the road because they are so wanting it,” says Gerald of the tour groups who come through his native garden.

“We have 50, 60-year-old and 70-year-old people come here — and they’ve lived and breathed in Australia, but never tasted this food and they want to know more about it. It is just so amazingly positive.”

Leaving a long public service career in 2016, Gerald founded Indigenous Cultural Adventures here in Orange, with a vision of sharing the heritage and cultural knowledge of the region’s Wiradjuri people.

Born in Bowen, North Queensland, Gerald is of the Juru people and South Seas Islander decent.

He first came to Orange as a young man picking apples almost four decades ago and he has been given the blessing of local Wiradjuri Elders to share traditional local knowledge.

But it is native foods that Gerald has a particular passion for.

“I was out there at Broken Hill and eating the bush bananas and sitting at Goodooga and eating snottygobbles — people have no idea about bush food that we’ve consumed for

thousands and thousands of years and I thought, this is all healthy food and we are not eating it,” says Gerald.

“You look around Australia now and you’ve got probably every nation’s restaurant sitting in the main streets— Korean, Italian and all this here, but where is the true Aussie stuff? Where is the First Nation food?”

Not only is there an untapped wealth of tasty and healthy produce native to Australia, he says, but Gerald also sees it as playing a part in the reconciliation journey here in Australia.

“I was Chairperson of the Orange NAIDOC Committee and this year the theme was ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’… there is a political message that has been reverberating through the community across this nation to the wider community: We are living in a multicultural community now, but there is also an Indigenous First Nation people here — the oldest living and surviving human beings on this earth — and we need a voice. So this is one voice; sharing our food and sharing our journey.”

Ultimately, Gerald would like to see a First Nations cuisine become commonplace in Australia, but he knows there is work to be done to make people aware of our native food offerings.

“I want to see a First Nations cuisine, but I believe as a business plan we must first create the market.

Once the market has been created, we can then take the business to the next level,” he says.

“So this is the journey; hopefully one day we will get something in Orange and hopefully we can get the employment of young Indigenous people, young people doing hospitality, chef apprenticeships and let them showcase their own food.”

Until then, Gerald and his team continue to showcase Indigenous produce through pop-ups, restaurant collaborations or tours through his small native garden.

“Cook it right and present it right and educate people around the herbs and vegetables and the fruit... we do all that stuff but also with a mixture of Italian, a mixture of Asian, but having those flavours there, the Indigenous proteins sitting on the plate and people are amazed when they actually try it out,” says Gerald.

“I had a guy who was a bit of gourmet and we just cooked up a bit of emu with a macadamia and warrigal pesto under a gum tree here. He said, ‘I’ve been all around the world, I’ve eaten some of the nicest foods around and I have to say this here has got to be number one!”

KEEPING THE FAITH Almost 9 months ago my wife Jackie was diagnosed with a rare and fatal brain disease called CJD and I was told to expect her to live only for a matter of weeks or months. I was told only one in a million get this disease and once the symptoms appear, life expectancy is generally around 4 months.

When you get news like that out of the blue, it can rattle your cage bigtime. I can’t say for sure how other people might respond to such news, but I can tell you a bit about how Jackie and I have coped since first receiving the news.

Jackie and I are devoted Christians so when we were first told, we probably didn’t respond like people who didn’t have such faith might.

For a start, as Christians, we know that Heaven awaits and for us, that means eternal life without any pain or suffering, living with Jesus. Given our understanding of Heaven, that’s something to really look forward to, not be afraid of.

That said, one still has to live out the here and now experience in the meantime, and I can tell you, that’s been extremely hard.

CJD is disease that has its origins with Mad Cow Disease and results in something called prions that eat the brain away. Apparently, it can be sitting in your body for decades before actually affecting you. The symptoms are dementia like but unlike dementia they escalate at a very rapid rate. In Jackie’s case she is basically incapable of doing anything for herself now and has all the final stage symptoms. I am with her 24/7 and virtually have to help her doing everything, even drink a cup of tea.

My purpose here is not to bore you with the sad details but rather to

say that despite my understanding that no one has ever survived CJD, and that there is no known cure, for reasons I don’t understand, I believe Jackie is going to be miraculously healed by God at some point soon.

If you think I’m crazy, fear not, who wouldn’t? But just so you don’t give me the benefit of the doubt that I may not be, let me give more reason to think I’m nuts.

I have this feeling that God wants to use this situation, to give Jackie and I a platform to share His love with the World. Let’s face it, if He did heal her, it would be a miracle type story for the world to hear wouldn’t it? I’m so caught up in this scenario that I even have writing a book about our experience in mind, AND I already have the title - C.J.D. vs G.O.D. “A true story that will leave you Godsmacked!”

Now you know for sure that I’m just plain crazy!

Keeping the faith as Christians can often make no sense whatsoever, God doesn’t play by the rules the World comes up with, yes he did write the rule book, but people have strayed well away from it on many fronts.

Jackie and I are no saints, but we have tried to honour God in the way we live our lives, and particularly how we’ve conducted ourselves through this experience. The final chapter is yet to be written, but for now, we’re just taking it one day at a time, trying to keep the faith despite the physical and emotional roller coaster we’re on. God’s hand has been in this so clearly until now, all praise to Him for what has been and what is still ahead.

arriages around the world in every culture and nationality are considered a sacred institution. Although they have a serious purpose, and as rituals and customs vary, they are a certainly a joyous occasion.

Earlier this week, Orange local, Sri Ramya Pullepu and Krishna Teja Suram held a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony or Vivaaha, as it is known in Sanskrit on Wednesday 18th November under the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955.

This is the first traditional Hindu Wedding of its kind in the Central West. Proud Mother, Anantha Maddirala said she was very excited. Following with tradition in the societies of the Indian SubContinent, Krishna and Sri’s marriage has been arranged by their families.

Traditional items were purchased from Sydney and traditional clothing for the Bride and Groom was purchased all the way from India.

A group of Orange Indigenous dancers performed in the First Nations dance competition as part of the sixth annual Dance Rites Festival last week, a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island dance and culture.

The all-female Dyiraamalang (Wiradjuri for ‘leader’) Dance Group joined 27 other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance groups in the event, which coincides with NAIDOC Week and brings together more than 350 performers spanning generations, nations and clan groups.

The festival, usually held at Sydney Opera House, was presented as a free digital event over four nights, from November 11 to 14, on the opera house’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.

Supported by Orange City Council’s Youth Services program, Orange Aboriginal Lands Council and Orange Aboriginal Medical Centre, Dyiraamalang was formed three years ago and is made up of students from Orange High School, Canobolas Rural Technology High School, James Sheahan Catholic High School and Catherine McAuley Catholic Primary School.

Aged between 11 and 18 they were one of the youngest groups performing in the festival.

Orange City Council Youth Development Officer Katrina Hausier said the dance group was formed when a group of Indigenous girls showed an interest in learning traditional dance and had since grown in popularity, performing at many local events.

“They wanted to share their knowledge with the Orange community,” she said.

“They are taught by contemporary Aboriginal choreographer, dancer and teacher Jo Clancy, from Darug and Gundungurra country in the Blue Mountains. Jo has developed the dances specifically for them and they have different meanings.”

“Orange City Council Youth Services continues to support the group with transport, funding applications and booking dance performances, and all girls are members of the Youth Action Council.”

This is the second year the girls have performed in Dance Rites and the first year they have competed as a stand-alone group,

performing as part of Jo Clancy’s Wagana Dancers last year.

This year’s broadcast included two dances by the group, a traditional welcome and a ‘wildcard’ dance, that fuses contemporary dance and music with tradition. These were filmed at Borenore Caves in September.

Their welcome dance was performed to live music by Wiradjuri musician Shane Riley of Dubbo, while the wildcard dance was performed to the song ‘Stomping Ground’ by Northern Territory musician Emily Wurramara.

The dancers made parts of their costumes by working with local weaver Talara Croker to make armbands and skirts.

Groups are being assessed on authenticity, reclamation work, use of costumes and revitalised crafts and cultural materials, along with fusion of language and music.

If the Orange group is successful, it will progress to the finals, which will air on Saturday, November 21, in partnership with NITV.

4. How long you and your spouse will have off over Christmas and how much leave you will need to take over the break.

INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE COMPETITION International borders may be closed, but it hasn’t stopped Orange and Japanese Sister City Ushiku from strengthening their 30-year relationship.

ast week, 16 students from James Sheahan High School took part the Ushiku Cup — a Japanese language speech competition named for the Sister City. The competition began in 2015 as a way to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the special relationship between the two cities.

“We just have this really beautiful strong connection with our cities and our schools both here and in Ushiku,” said James Sheahan Japanese teacher Helen Clarke.

“We take the kids on exchange to Japan and we receive visitors from Japan regularly, but this is another aspect where we can become connected while not actually go to each other countries — which in this climate with COVID is perfect — it is a nice way to still establish a connection.”

The competition is normally an interschool event

held at the Orange City Council Chambers, but with the uncertainty around groups gathering during a pandemic, James Sheahan proceeded with a smaller competition on school grounds.

There are three categories in the Ushiku Cup: Juniors (Years 7 and 8); Seniors (Years 9 and 10) and Open ( Year 11 students).

“In the senior division they’re reading a folktale called Princess Kaguya, which is a famous tradition Japanese folk story and then the open students have had enough Japanese learning that they actually make their own speeches —this year’s topic is my school, which is actually also an HSC topic so it marries in well with what they are doing for their HSC preparations.

“The juniors read a folk story in Japanese, they have to read it out using Japanese script and everything and this years’ one is Tom Thumb — Issun-boshi in Japanese,” said Helen.

I

t has been nearly 18 months since an arson attack forced the Orange Men’s Shed out of their woodworking rooms at Lucknow. Despite the lengthy delay in rebuilding (and a global pandemic) the men are pushing ahead at their temporary home at ‘Riverside’ part of the former Bloomfield Hospital.

“We got this building on a temporary basis on a good deal too,” said member Chuck Frame, who helped line up the temporary accommodation, “But hopefully we can get back their soon.”

“We’ve been here 12 months now and we do miss it out there,” added Men’s Shed Chairman Hugh Laird, “Because it is on the highway and

anything we used to make we’d put it out on a display out the front and we sold everything!

“Out here we are a little isolated, but I have to say it has been a good move because we are back in business… we are still really in limbo down there, and if we had to hang around much longer we might have folded.”

But the Orange Men’s Shed is open as it always was (although at a different location) 9.30am to 3pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, with members stopping by to work on their projects or just for a chat.

“Tuesday morning is our big social event where we will have 20 or 22 out here and half of those are blokes who just come out for morning tea one day a week and have a bit

of a social event,” said Hugh, who has been busy knocking up a ‘mud kitchen’ for a local preschool.

“They came to us with a picture, said, ‘can you build it.’ I said ‘yep,’ so here it is. It’s mainly from pallets, but we had some timber given to us and we’ve planed that up to make it look a bit decent. They didn’t want it to be too fancy, they wanted it to be reasonable rustic and all-weather, so the kids can get to it and play havoc with it I should imagine.”

Projects like the mud kitchen are just the way the Orange Men’s Shed likes to help out the community.

“We have a few jobs a bit of stuff on the go,” said Hugh. “I suppose in many ways we

support our community, not necessarily in doing community projects, but we will make something for a community project on a very cheap basis, cheaper than you could buy it.”

Anyone interested in joining the Orange Men’s Shed should stop by any Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, see what they do and maybe learn something new.

“Blokes here are happy to help other blokes,” said Chuck. “Sit down and show you how to do it.”

“Yeah,” said Hugh. “We’ve got some blokes who’ve never touched woodwork in their life and some bokes never touched metal work in their life, but they are sort of adapting and getting a few skills.”

A brand new ninja equipment course was unveiled at Bowen Public School earlier this week with students eager to test their abilities.

Relieving Principal, Marianne Pankhurst said, “We started to put some little pieces in place when Mr McPherson was here as Principal, and the kids were loving it so much, we invested in a big course. The students are all very excited to get on and have a go. It will be a great way to increase their strength, agility and confidence.”

Former Bowen School Principal, Mr McPherson attended to officially open the playground.

Stating, “It’s wonderful to be back and the ninja course looks fantastic. It’s going to be a brilliant addition to not just the school and the playground, but to your everyday activity.”

Four students were chosen to demonstrate the course in front of the school, as each student approached the dreaded ‘wall’ a chant began from the onlooking crowd…. “Beat the wall… beat

the wall,” as the student completed the challenge an uproar of cheering and clapping took hold.

Year 6 student, Savannah Lucas said she loves the new course, “It was actually very exciting when we heard we were getting the new equipment. The wall part of the course is my favourite part, although it’s the hardest as you have to bring yourself over the top. I’m also excited to race along the course against my friends.”

The school was also sent an exciting video message from successful Ninja Warriors, Bryson, Ben and Olivia. As they congratulated the school on opening their own ninja course, ensuring they’d keep an eye out for future Ninja Warriors in the making. “As you can see, our residents here are quite independent and active,” says Maureen Horth, as she shows Orange City Life around Abbeyfield House Orange.

Located in South Orange, the large home and its well-kept garden blends into the leafy streetscape and would be unnoticed by many who drive past.

Inside, the neat and comfortable living areas look out on a green courtyard.

It is lunchtime and the residents are sitting down to a meal of cutlets and vegetables at the large dining table.

“Abbeyfield is like an in-between living at home and going into higher level of care,” continues Maureen, who is the Chair of the Abbeyfield House Orange management committee.

Originating in the United Kingdom, the Abbeyfield model was created in recognition of a need for community-based housing for older people who wish to stay independent, but still enjoy the company and security of living with others.

Residents in an Abbeyfield Home have their own private bed-sitting room (which they furnish themselves) with ensuite, while sharing the communal lounge and dining spaces. A live-in housekeeper provides meals and cleans the communal spaces.

“The housekeeper provides the main meal at midday, a light meal in the evening and then

the residents access their own breakfasts,” says Maureen.

“We also have a couple of relief housekeepers who work here on the weekends, but we don’t have anybody with a health background. The people here are still very able and active, so it is just about providing social support and day-to-day support.”

Two of Abbeyfield’s ten rooms are currently vacant, says Maureen, and they are on the lookout for new residents to join them.

“Most people don’t know Abbeyfield is here, because it is just a regular house and so trying to get the word out has been part of our challenge,” she says. “If anyone is interested in joining us, we would really love to hear from them.”

Potential residents are encouraged to visit first and try out the lifestyle before they make a commitment. While residents all have their own private spaces, communal living doesn’t suit everybody, says Maureen.

“We have a guest room so that residents can have family or friends come and stay if they’d like.

When we have a new person who is considering coming to live here we actually encourage them to spend two weeks in the guest room so that they can get a bit of a sense of what Abbeyfield is like and whether it will work for them,” she says.

“And it is also so the other residents get an opportunity to meet that person, get to know them and see whether they feel it will work. So, it is

a bit like a group of housemates getting together and working out if a person is going to fit in or not… It has to work for everyone; this is their home.”

Couples are also welcome at Abbeyfield.

“Usually we put couples in rooms side by side.

One couple used one room as a bedroom and the other as a sitting room… so we can accommodate these things, depending on what people are looking for we can make it work for them.”

Abbeyfield House Orange is managed by a community committee and the fees are kept very reasonable at 70 per cent of the aged pension, plus any other rental assistance available.

“It is not about make money, it is about supporting the local community,” says Maureen.

This house was built in the early 90s and it was a cooperation between Housing NSW and Orange Council and the money has largely been raised in the local community. So it has always been very community focused.”

As well new residents, Abbeyfield are also looking to recruit a new casual housekeeper, says Maureen.

“And if anyone is interested in being involved in the management committee, we would be interested in talking to them.”

said. Being teamed-up with a more experienced SRE teacher had also provided a gentle introduction to the program.

The support and encouragement of the class teacher at her school had also inspired an interest in becoming a teacher herself. “I thought I’d only be a support person, but after a while I thought, ‘I can do this’. Teaching scripture has led me to want to pursue a career in education,” she added.

“When my kids are a bit bigger, I actually feel confident enough to see I’m good with kids.”

Margaret Barlow, a retired teacher herself, has enjoyed the chance to go back into the classroom and instruct young minds on her faith.

Principals, teachers, and staff at our local schools are very helpful and supportive of the program, but he said that there is always a push from some to close down “scripture” in public schools.

However, the program has a 150-year history with the-then NSW Government in the 1860s promising to allow religious instruction in State schools under an agreement which followed the closure of the small parish schools that preceded the introduction of compulsory education in the State.

In some parts of our now-multicultural State, teachers educate students in other religions including Buddhism, Islam, and Hinduism, and there are a few of these classes in our region.

In Orange, though, the program is almost exclusively run by local Christian churches, Ron explains.

“I am on a committee that runs SRE, under the auspices of the Orange District Ministers Association, that involves 13 schools, 12 local

churches and a budget for printed material of about $15,000 per annum.”

“Part of the message is that kids should be able to make up their own minds, whether to follow Jesus or not, but if they are not told about him, how can they come up with their own opinion?

That’s important now, more than ever, I believe.”

With a background in hospitality, she was daunted by the prospect of teaching religion to children but has never regretted her decision.

“I’m in a team that teach primary school kids at Bletchington and they ask some really curly questions; this makes me need to go off and find answers that I would not otherwise seek,” she said.

“I go to Orange Evangelical Church and they announced that they needed more scripture teachers. This was just after I had my third child and, I thought, I’d help,” she said.

Although only a yellow belly and a carp were hooked over the couple of days, a great time was had by all. OTAS has been

a local club for fly fishing enthusiasts for several decades and has some local fly fishing legends who are only too happy to share their knowledge and experience to those wishing to learn the fine art of fly fishing. The end of the year is quickly approaching and I’m now nearing the end of my parliamentary commitments for 2020. What a year 2020 has been with drought, bushfires, flood events and global pandemic – it’s definitely been a year to test our resilence.

We’ve been doing some last minute additions to my 2020/21 festive season TV message, which will air on Prime7 next month. Thanks to Phill Cranny of Razzle Dazzle for putting together a great production.

Country shows return in 2021 In response to the despair of people who were relying on work in the country show industry, I asked the Government back in September would they consider saving the carnival and show industry from economic ruin by allowing shows and carnivals to be held for attendees between 500 and 10,000 people. Lo and behold, the NSW Government have responded in the media last week that they’re allowing country shows to return from January 9th 2021. This is great news for the industry, and fantastic news for country communities who really need these events to bring everyone together.

New funding to deliver canteen and facilities to Orange’s Showground Naylor Pavilion. This is great news, and I’ve been supporting this project for the past few years, and working behind the scenes to get this funding. I had a meeting with Minister Pavey on June 3rd 2020 to push the funding request and get it over the line, and it paid off. Congratulations to the Orange Show Society for your patience and tenacity.

This year in parliament I have been strenuously advocating awareness of mental health, supporting our local community and the healthcare professionals on the front line. When the NSW Government announced a $10m mental health support package, naturally, I was very interested in knowing more about where counsellors would be placed and how they could be accessed. I submitted a question to Minister for Mental Health, Bronnie Taylor, asking where counsellors would be based, however in the Health Minister’s response it didn’t actually say.

Perhaps the Minister was avoiding specifics and that’s why she had her colleague, the Minister for Health, to respond, because we now know, as reported in The Daily Telegraph on 23 August 2020, that two of the counsellors will be based in Jindabyne and Cooma, the very electorate she lives in!

Now I won’t deny either of those two communities these resources and service, because truth be told they need those services too, however it’s critically important we know where the taxpayer-funded counsellors will be located elsewhere in the state so country folk can access them, especially in rural and remote NSW where suicide is occurring at an alarming rate.

Christmas is just around the corner, so let’s buy local and support local businesses and local jobs.

DPI Official Opening

High country horseman Recently I had the pleasure of meeting some passionate local horsemen and we discussed the issue of access to public lands for recreational trail riding. As you know, I’m a strong supporter of public access and recreational use of our national parks and public lands. We also discussed the NSW Government’s proposed management of wild brumbies in the snowy mountains. These guys were real characters and a laugh; they presented me with an old-fashioned horseshoe puzzle and instruction on how to solve it. Thanks fellas.

Lachlan Valley Railway Recently I made a return visit to the historic railway depot at Orange East Fork. John Healey of Lachlan Valley Railway filled me in on their plans for heritage shedding to provide secure storage of trains and carriages, once funding has been secured.

John also showed me some of the track repairs LVR members have recently done with replacing track sleepers.

Following a courteous invitation from Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW, Adam Marshall MP, I attended the official opening of the new DPI building in Orange. The event also celebrated the 130 year anniversary of the department. This department is a boon for Orange and the broader region, and this new development, literally, cements our city as its HQ for many years to come.

Galinbundin Mtn Bike Tr ya ail I checked out the new Galinbundinya Mountain Bike Trail, which is soon to be opened. The family-friendly track is 7.4km long, and meanders along the Boree Creek at Lidster between Cargo Road and Federal Falls. I met up with Garreth and his team from Iconic Trails who were putting in the finishing touches at the trailhead near Cargo Road. They’ve worked almost seven days a week since

early August, having tackled many obstacles in the understory of the forest. This project has removed blackberry bushes and other weeds along the overgrown terrain.

The trail has a fall of 270m and 5° gradient, so it will surely test the quads for those who want to give it a hard run from the bottom to top. The run down will be exciting for those who yearn for some air, too.

Congratulations to the Orange Mountain Bike Club who have channeled $145k ‘My Community Project’ grants funding into delivering our community free public mixed-use track for adaptive bike, walkers, joggers, and mountain bikers.

I look forward to giving the trail a crack when it opens.

Recently I visited Spring Hill, which is looking lush for a change. I had a look at the old Rec Ground, where I’ve played Golden Oldies Rugby in the past. The grounds and amenities desperately need some upgrades to support their growing community. I’ve since been in touch with OCC who’ll liaise with local stakeholders and look into community funding which is being directed to Spring Hill.

James Sheahan Catholic High School celebrates NAIDOC in Style

In the morning God (in Wiradjuri Guudha) smiled down upon us all with the sun coming out after rain overnight and earlier in the morning. The students in each year group happily gathered for a whole school NAIDOC March, an inaugural event for James Sheahan.

The students marched onto the oval led by Galumaay Dance Group and a number of the school’s Aboriginal Dance Group to the sounds of the didgeridoo, clapsticks and song, in Wiradjuri. This was just inspiring and had the amazing affect of unifying all the students and staff on this beautiful morning.

Ms Leanne Bovington delivered a meaningful Acknowledgement of Country to a silent, respectful crowd, impressing upon all present the significance of this year’s theme: Always Was Always Will Be. It recognizes that the First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 100,000 years and counting as new discoveries are made.

For the remainder of the day, each year group were able to celebrate Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples’ history, cultures and achievements. The students were given a gift of seeing, hearing and experiencing a small sample of the oldest, continuous surviving culture on earth.

Knitters’ and Crocheters’ Christmas Tree Photos by EdithMay Gowing The Christmas Club Tree at the Ex-services Club this year was made by the Orange Knitting and Crochet Group in association with the Lucknow Men’s Shed. The Knitting and Crochet group meet at the Ex-Service club every Tuesday and Saturday for knitting/ Crocheting and a good natter. It is a diverse group ranging in age from mid-20 to 100 years of age. They have approximately 25 members with around 15 that meet regularly, including members from Parkes and Bathurst. They regularly make items for other charitable organisations. They are currently working on beanies for the Orange Women Refuge.

The Christmas club is a n area where people can donate items for Christmas for Children. Just take a ticket, wrap a present and place it under the tree. The Ex Services Club will distribute to needy families.

Live music returns to the Orange Civic Theatre ODonnell3: a trio from two duos With perfect, three-part harmonies in the tradition Crosby, Stills and Nash or John, Paul and George, new local trio Odonnell3 is bringing live music back to the Orange Civic Theatre stage.

The ODonnell3 story begins with Andy and Pat O’Donnell, two brothers who discovered their love for singing together after watching the Simon and Garfunkel reunion concert. Singing at the local market on the South Coast soon led to their first paying gig.

The O’Donnell Brothers duo became a firm favourite on the Sydney live scene in the 90s, recording two albums which received good airplay and were regular guests on Triple M with Doug Mulray.

When Andy became a dad, the time came to put the O’Donnell Brothers on hold. Pat continued to play music on the road and during this time he met his wife Kellie. While not planning on a musical partnership, when a venue in Alice Springs was looking for a duo, it gave rise to Pat & Kel. Together, they toured their two voices and guitars, delighting audiences in Australia, the USA, Canada and Japan.

When the time came to leave the road, Pat & Kel settled down in Kellie’s home town of Orange. From here, they have continued to perform and recorded a live album at the Agrestic Grocer in 2018. The album release was to be March 2020, but COVID has put it on hold.

Andy, Pat and Kellie are all gifted songwriters and have been working on original songs which will be a part of their repertoire, along with music from artists including Joni Mitchell, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Ross Wilson, Bob Dylan and Yes. The natural sibling harmony of Andy and Pat is perfectly housed in the soulful tones of Kellie. This is a unique blend of three voices that were destined to join together in song.

Orange Bird Society donates to Vinnies Van/Café service The Orange Bird Society has once again donated to the local Vinnies Van/Cafe service to support disadvantaged members of the local community.

Tony Ford, Orange Bird Society President, handed over a cheque for $500 from the Orange Bird Sale held in March 2020. “We had our bird sale on 7 March and a few weeks later everything shut down because of COVID-19,” said Mr Ford. “We were lucky as people came from everywhere for the sale. It’s because of our luck we are in the position to donate again to the Vinnies Van/Café.”

But we were nearly at the end of Term 1 and going into a four week holiday break so an extra three weeks didn’t really matter.

However when it was time for Term 2 to begin we were right in the middle of the lockdown period which meant that all group meetings were cancelled. But we were keen to try to keep our group together and functioning so it was decided to try an online version. This was a bit of a novelty for some of us, but everyone was supportive, and it worked!

Every week we would send in our stories and poems, and they were collated and sent back out so that we could all see and appreciate each other’s work. It seemed to be very successful, and although we missed the weekly get-togethers we felt that we were still in touch.

When Term 3 began at the end of July we could return to face to face meetings

each week and things were back to normal, or the “new normal” rather, with sanitising and social distancing. It was really good to be able to catch up in person again but I think we all felt that being able to keep the group together online had encouraged us to keep writing.

Our group is only relatively small but we appreciate the social aspect as much as the opportunity to practise our writing skills. Each week we enjoy the chance to catch up with each other and we look forward to the challenges posed by the different topics we are given as class exercises and homework. However we look forward just as much to the weekly contributions from each group member.

These are always interesting and often surprising!

Now we are almost at the end of Term 4, and the beginning of next year for our U3A creative writing group probably seems a long way off. But when the time comes for us to enrol for 2021 I’m sure we will be there with renewed enthusiasm ready to start again.

Arts Scholarship for Young Women School Leavers The Zonta Club of Orange Marj Johnson Arts Scholarship for young women entering tertiary education in 2021 is open for applications.

If you finished school in Orange in 2019 or 2020 and have been accepted into a full-time course at a recognised tertiary institution to study visual, digital and or performing arts apply now.

The recipient will receive $2,000 in the first year and $1,500 in the second year of study subject to successful annual assessment.

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council Gardens, Lawns dept.

We live in Belair and in previous years a contractor has mowed, whipper snipped and maintained the area. OCC staff are ‘supposedly’ doing the area now but are slap happy. They mow one strip, leave all the edges and areas behind the houses unkept, the whole area looks terrible with grass overgrown (and it is promoted as a walking area - Wetlands Loop). We’ve lived here many years and never had this issue before. Many of us are now using our own mowers to mow behind houses where they miss and keep the areas maintained where we can. Guess the stigma of being a ‘council worker’ never changes unfortunately, ‘only do what they have to’. Bring back the contractors as they do actually take pride in their work.

THUMBS DOWN to drivers who drive against the marked arrows in the Summer Centre and Aldi car parks. Both have clear traffic arrows, yet drivers constantly drive against them. Please observe the arrows.

THUMBS DOWN to the comments re COVID related closure of Borenore Caves. It is a National Parks statewide decision that is in keeping with the general rules around preventing the spread of disease. Perhaps much better funding of National Parks would/ could allow for a refinement of the rules and for some much needed weed around Mt Canobolas.

A HUGE THUMBS DOWN to all the TV stations for ramming American politics down an uninterested public’s throat. It just goes to show you don’t have much to offer. The Qld elections were on and we hardly heard anything about it. The TV stations are signing their own death warrants, forcing people to go to the internet to escape this stupid programming, which is exactly what they are complaining about.

THUMBS UP to Karen in Woolworths deli for her exceptional customer service under very trying conditions i.e. lack of adequate staff numbers.

THUMBS DOWN to the red P plater who decided it was a great idea to tail me from near my parent’s house all the way to Orange Public School and tailgate me and then illegally overtake me in a left lane, then speed up nearly hitting another car and me in the process.

I don’t know where you got your license from and who taught you how to drive but your details have been handed in.

The Mills! It is my absolute favourite place to eat in Orange; the staff are lovely and they have a varied mix of food choices outside the standard take away menu so there is always something for everyone in my family.

I would totally recommend the Smoko Shed!!!! In Leeward. If you’re after amazing food and great company while you eat, it’s well worth a visit. Whenever I visit, the girls greet you with a smile and are always on for a chat. Not to mention Whitey out the back who makes the most amazing pies and sausage rolls in town!!! It’s not just an ordinary bakery it’s an extraordinary bakery

My favourite store in Orange would have to be Ashcroft’s IGA in Peisley St.

My favourite store is Dusk. They always have amazing quality candles and such a wide selection of fragrances! Wonderful addition to the Orange area when the City Centre expanded.

My kids love going for lunch at the Smoko Shed!!

Mary and Tex are amazing for everything home decor wise, with clothes for good measure. Great service and stock....

All of the staff are super friendly and helpful and everything I need is in one place. No need to go elsewhere. They collect donated goods for various local charity’s and offer discounts to other local businesses too. If they don’t have something in stock you only have to ask and if they can access it, they will order it in for you. They also have a great range of vegan and vegetarian options along with different international foods as well.

Ashcroft’s Orange IGA are my favourite store in in town.
