After years spent showing Australians the best of India, Morocco and other exotic destinations, Tour Operator Nicole Farrell is now showcasing the local delights of her own region to the world.

“I was in denial for some time,” says Nicole, who’d spent three years running her own boutique international tour company, Red Door Tours, before the pandemic struck.

this great stuff on my own, so all my friends on my tour were like let’s get Tuk-tuks here tonight and we’ll go out and see all the monuments lit up.”

“This year I had ten international trips booked and tours were full everything was just going so well with the business and then… COVID.”

But as they went to leave the hotel, the rest of Nicole’s tour group joined them.

Born and raised in Orange, Nicole’s entire career has revolved around travel in some fashion or another. Trained as an early childhood teacher, she spent eight years teaching in Singapore and Hong Kong before returning to Australia, where she next set up an online craft company importing goods from China.

“When I moved back from Hong Kong I saw all these things that weren’t available in Australia, so I decided to start importing them, this was when online was very new, but the craft business allowed me to go to China every year and buy new products,” says Nicole.

And it was not long after selling that business, that travel took Nicole down yet another career path.

“Well that’s a funny story,” says Nicole, who after the sale of the craft business had booked herself on a tour to India.

“The tour was I call it a ‘fake tour.’ It was very superficial, there was no meeting the locals, it was all in gated hotels — everything about it was just fake! But I had arrived earlier and already done 4

and they haven’t even highlighted that… people are really wanting to connect more with where things are from and who owns the company and that sort of thing. So when we finish the morning walking tour the platter we have is fully local and I can tell people about the cheese and where it is made and all that sort of thing.

“It was only meant to be six of us sneaking, but then everyone was there… and so then I was just running side tours off that fake tour!” said Nicole.

“People want that connection, they are wanting the story behind it, and they are wanting to support regional places, so the response has been great!”

“And so it just happened. I came home and started an international tour business.”

But then of course, the coronavirus spread throughout the world and borders slammed shut.

“I came home with those first people who had to quarantine at home, so I spent two weeks in my house on my own… In April people were still hopeful that this was a short-term thing, but I think reality sunk in around the end of May, that this is not going anywhere, that things would have to change.”

Nicole took a call centre job to get by, but it wasn’t long before she decided to follow another of her long-held travel dreams; showcasing what we have right here on our own doorsteps.

“It started with one walking food tour,” says Nicole. “I had the idea because I’d done food tours around the world and I loved them. Food is such a good connection to the culture and the people and the country, but if you come to Orange outside of our festival times, there’s really not that

...I was quite shocked by how much we do produce in the region and the diversity... connection to the food here or what’s grown in the region.”

And so Nicole’s Country Food Trail tours were born. From one daily walking tour, Nicole has grown her offering to include local history tours and visits to some of our region’s best producers.

“I was quite shocked by how much we do produce in the region and the diversity,” says Nicole.

“There are some places in town that you’d be surprised by how much local stuff is on their menu

When international borders eventually reopen, Nicole is looking forward to taking groups overseas again, but her love for all things local will continue.

“I will run the two businesses side by side... probably forever!” said Nicole. “I think they complement each other well, I’ve already had a lot of people on the walking tours who, when it opens up again are going to go to Morocco with me.

“I’m always looking for good new things to do.

So I may take some smaller groups regionally myself and just see what happens, where the demand is and what people are looking for…

“A New Zealand tour company are talking to me about bringing people out regionally, so it would be great to offer these sorts of tours to international guests and get them to experience the best of regional Australia. That will be exciting!”

SANTA SATURDAY IN ORANGE Last week Hearts for Orange surprised thousands of shoppers in Orange by giving away 4000 x $1 scratchies to shoppers on Saturday morning, this Saturday there’s a different type of fun for shoppers, it’s called Santa Saturday.

This time, Hearts for Orange have placed 10 soft toy Santas (like the one pictured) in shop windows along Summer Street and is offering some great money prizes for you to find all 10. There’s $2000 in gift vouchers to be won and you can get the full details of how to enter in this issue. The idea is simply meant to be some fun for people, and especially families as they go about their Christmas Shopping.

Hearts for Orange has also been running another promotion, a bit similar, throughout November called Find the Money Hearts, again there’s a great prize up for grabs of a $1000 gift voucher to be spent at the Orange business of your choice. With this one, Hearts for Orange has big posters placed in shop windows all over Orange and ten of them have a picture of $100 dollar bills in the heart at the bottom right of the poster. To enter this competition, you have to find just three of the posters with the money in the hearts and put an entry in using the entry form in this issue of OC Life. We’ve included several entry forms in case other family members want to enter as well.

Supporting kids in need this Christmas — MELISE COLEMAN —

Christmas wishes for more than 200 local children and young adults have been placed on Christmas trees at Veritas House office in Orange, the charity is now calling on the Orange community to help bring some Christmas cheer to these special young people.

Veritas has set up Christmas Giving Trees at their offices at 29 Sale Street, Orange.

With more Christmas wishes to fulfil than ever before, they are calling on local residents to embrace the spirit of giving and purchase a gift for a child or young person who is at risk or experiencing homelessness, or unlikely to receive a gift this year due to hardship. Each tree has gift tags on display that contain the Christmas wish list for each child, local residents simply select a tag and bring it back over the next couple of weeks with their preferably unwrapped gift.

to either move from the Out-of-Home Care system and into independent living, or who are living with Foster Carers, is currently at its highest level for our agency,” said Veritas House CEO, Jody Pearce. “The Christmas period is also one of our busiest at our youth refuges in Orange and Bathurst; so we are hopeful the local community will get behind our Christmas Appeal again this year.”

Ms Pearce acknowledged that with the challenges faced because of COVID-19 this year, it may be tougher than ever to achieve their goal of providing a gift to every one of the children and young people Veritas supports. In light of this, Veritas has created an additional option where residents keen to support the appeal, but who don’t want to attend Veritas, to collect a tag or visit shopping centres, can simply call Veritas on 1300 011 973 and staff will provide details for a child’s wishlist, so the gift

can be purchased online and delivered to Veritas.

Alternatively, residents can simply make a taxdeductible donation, and Veritas caseworkers will organise to purchase a child’s gift.

“Last year we had a number of parents bring their children in to select a tag and purchase a gift, so they could learn the importance of giving gifts, not simply receiving. We also had a number of businesses in the region replace their office Kris Kringle with buying gifts for our clients, which was a huge contribution towards filling our tree and providing gifts to all of the children in our care,” said Jody.

“We are hoping local residents and businesses will not be put-off by concerns about Covid and will use one of the options we have available to assist us to bring some joy into the lives of special local children this Christmas, so that we can make Christmas Day a special day the children will truly remember.”

Veritas House is a not-for-profit organisation that was established in the Central West nearly 40 years ago and has grown to become one of the largest providers of foster care and youth homelessness services in the region, supporting more than 800 children and young people each year.

Puppies are particularly vulnerable, needingMYintensive care in hospital if they’re going to have a chance of CY recovery. A simple injection will protect your dog, so CMY puppies should have a series of injections starting when they are 6-8 weeks old. Your precious new pup isn’t fully K protected from Parvovirus until after their third needle, so no outside walks or playing with unvaccinated dogs until after that time. After the initial course to protect against Parvovirus and other diseases like canine cough and distemper, your dog will return for an annual check-up and vaccinations, tailored to their needs.

Leptospirosis is now in NSW. This is serious infectious disease which affects domestic and wild animals and can transmit to humans too. It’s caused by a bacteria - rats are the most common carrier of the disease and several dogs have recently died in Sydney even with veterinary help. But dogs that do not travel to Sydney are still at risk, as now the disease is in NSW, it will spread – rats can get everywhere! You or your pet can catch leptospirosis if you come into contact with infected soil or water, or are bitten by a carrier. Dr Judith recommends that your dog is protected with two vaccinations a month apart, and then an annual booster injection. All puppies will be offered the leptospirosis vaccination as part of their usual puppy protection plan.

Cats need an annual injection to protect them from CatFlu, feline enteritis, and if your cat goes outside, Feline AIDS. More than just trays: Trojan Group Australia launches in-house powder coating — JONATHAN ROE —

Since launching in 2017, local tray manufacturer Trojan Trays Australia has built a name for quality products and shown that there is a bright future for regional manufacturing.

Recently celebrating three years in business, Trojan launched their latest venture; Trojan Powder Coating.

In-house powder coating is something that was always on their radar, said Trojan’s Managing Director Steven Turnbull, as it means they can reduce manufacturing costs and, importantly, control the quality of their product from beginning to end.

“It also gives us another revenue stream outside of where our core market is,” said Steven. “This is a completely separate market to our core business — it assists the core business, but it is a separate market in that people still get things powder coated, even if the new car market isn’t buying trays.”

As if the extended drought of the past few years wasn’t enough of a challenge for a young business, the global pandemic really highlighted the need to diversify and strive for greater efficiency.

“In April, we lost 90 percent of our turnover,” said Steven. “We picked up some work in between then and the end of the financial year, which kept us going, but it made us focus on pulling the belt in a little bit tighter and seeing what we could squeeze out of the place,

A service to remember loved ones lost — JONATHAN ROE —

Christmas is just around the corner and while for most of us it is a time of joy, for some it can be a painful reminder of those loved ones no longer with us.

On December 16, the Orange Uniting Church will hold a Service of Solace, a place for people to remember and honour their loved ones ahead of the festive season.

“Many people find it hard to deal with their feelings when they are supposed to be merry and happy and yet are feeling a certain amount of grief at seeing the empty chair at the Christmas table,” said retired Uniting Church minister Alan Robinson.

It was more than two decades ago, that Alan first held a Service of Solace, at the behest of a family grieving a tragic accident.

“I was a Uniting Church minister at Mona Vale and I was mowing my lawn one afternoon when I heard an explosion up the street and somebody said there had been a serious accident,” he said.

“I discovered that a large semi-trailer had lost control on Mona Vale hill and gone down and went through this house and a little girl in the house was killed.”

Alan made himself known and was there to support and provide pastoral care to the family. He later

presided over the funeral.

“Coming into Christmas a whole lot of family and friends of theirs came to me and basically said, we can’t face Christmas without Nicole, it is just too difficult to have her missing. So, I put together from various resources a service that would help them,” said Alan, who made the service an annual community service.

“I thought that was so appreciated and so significant that I decided… and have done it, every year since that time,” said Alan.

“This year I think will be particularly important, because people have been locked away from loved ones interstate and so forth and there has been a lot of difficulty in addition to other aspects of the virus outbreak that has caused people a certain amount of grief and uncertainty… there have been deaths and people I think who would have attended a funeral of somebody, but couldn’t because of restricted numbers, and they are probably carrying some unresolved grief and feelings about that.

“So I’m hoping that people will come — and they certainly don’t have to be a member of our church or a church,—but if they feel like it is going to be helpful to go somewhere where they can remember somebody ,then we hope this helps them a lot.”

Alan said the service will be very low-key and very meditative. He said people will have an opportunity to light a candle in memory of a lost loved one, and even to bring along a photograph or a memento that reminds them of that person and tie it on a Christmas tree.

“I think the relief people have is: I have remembered this person, I have celebrated their life, and so I can let go of it now and actually enjoy Christmas without feeling guilty about enjoying Christmas,” he said.

The service will commence at 6pm, Wednesday 16 December at Orange Uniting Church Hall, 217 Anson St, Orange.

STAGE 3 OF THE SOUTHERN FEEDER ROAD UPGRADE NOW UNDERWAY In a big win for motorists in and around Orange, the first sod has been turned on the next stage of the long-awaited Southern Feeder Road in Orange.

This is a big investment but it’s a big project and it’s exactly the type of investment we need to be making into our growing regional cities.

Stage 3 covers a 2km stretch of road that will go from Elsham Avenue to the Mitchell Highway and follow the same line as Dairy Creek Road and Blowes Road.

There’s going to be faster access to the hospital, Jack Brabham Park and to Cadia Mine. It’s also going to be faster and easier for our farmers and other businesses to get their produce and products to market.

There’s going to be a new intersection where the new road meets the highway roughly 250 metres west of the current intersection, which is out near the Driver Reviver site on the highway.

The Australian Government has contributed over $9.1 million to the Southern Feeder Road Project and $3 million of that is going into Stage 3.

RUNS ON THE BOARD FOR ORANGE √ $29.8 million for the Dixons Long Point Crossing development

The Southern Feeder Road will also mean less congestion in and around Orange and safer roads.

√ $22 million for the CSU medical school

This is the second year Trojan have run their appeal, the first sparked by the devastating bushfires that ravaged so many communities across eastern Australia last summer.

The results are in for Newcastle Permanent’s 40th annual Primary School Mathematics Competition and two Orange students have been named among the top performers across regional NSW.

Rory Mcintosh from Clergate Public School and Alice Scholte from Kinross Wolaroi were the two superstar students from Orange recognised for their outstanding achievements. Rory won the Year 5 District Award and Alice Scholte won the year 6 District Award.

The exam saw over 17,500 students across 290 schools put their numeracy and problem-solving skills to the test in August with no help from calculators, rulers or any other mathematical instruments.

Looking back at the 1950’s” “We finally managed to rent part of a house which was full of very old furniture. Today it would be highly valued as antique. I hated it. All I wanted was black and orange plastic!”

This was the ‘50s after all.

In many ways the 1950s was a watershed decade in Australia.

The Second World War, which had lasted for nearly six years, was over and the country was facing an entirely new era. There were great advances in medicine and technology and Australia, relatively untouched by war, was healthy and prosperous.

This was distributed by Australian millionaire and philanthropist, Edward Hallstrom, and was much cheaper than the imported electric models. According to the group, it was huge on the outside but had very little room for anything on the inside, but it was still better than the old ice chest.

According to Russel there was also the quaint old custom of standing it on its head.

“When the fridge became over enthusiastic and all inside turned to ice, the family would be gathered around to defrost it and turn it upside down until the coolant began to flow again,” he said.

However, chopping wood was a chore mostly done by the males in the family, as Tom Hogan’s mother understood: “We came home for lunch one day to find Mum sitting by the fuel stove with a six-foot log sticking out of the fire box, slowly burning at one end.

However, the generation that reached adulthood at that time found themselves wedged between the pre-war attitudes of their parents and promise of new freedoms of the future. For most of us though, it was still in many ways the old world.

We got the message and quickly got to work with the axe.”

Very few people had washing machines, there was no television until 1956, and domestic airconditioning was almost unheard of. We were still living very much as our parents had lived and it was not until the 1960s that things really began to change.

Wood chips and paper were set alight in a cylindrical container which was attached to one end of the bath and through which flowed piped water. It had to be constantly fed or the water went rapidly from lukewarm to cold.

When it got going it made a loud choofing sound.

Compared with the huge demand for nonrenewable energy today, we were models of conservation. We didn’t have much that required electric power!

“In 1949 I lived in a house with only two power points, both in inaccessible places”, said Gillian.

“As more appliances became available, we just used more double adaptors.”

Not only did stoves and coppers require wood but water for baths had to be heated too.

Most of us found the chip bath heater quite terrifying.

Because washing machines were extremely expensive, the old copper was the mainstay on washing day. If you were lucky it was heated by gas, but most of us made do with wood.

In fact, wood was one of the main sources of heat in our young lives and this meant there was a great deal of energy expended chopping it.

Not everyone had a refrigerator and the earliest we had were powered by kerosine.

Rob told us:

That sound was enough to turn most people off the idea of having a long luxurious soak in the bath and, of course, showers were out of the question.

The copper, whether fuelled by wood or gas had many uses. Gillian remembered when her mother, needing to wash blankets, suggesting she climb into the copper and jump up and down to give them a good churning. We can only hope the water had not reached boiling point!

Mick’s mother, ever resourceful, would include an unopened tin of condensed milk in the washing and, when it was finished, she would make tarts from the caramelised milk.

And quite a few children were bathed in the soapy water as well.

One of the most pungent memories was of the dunny men or night cart. They were prevalent in unsewered areas where the toilet was situated down the back.

“I was born in Bundaberg”, said Wendy. “One of my most vivid memories was of the dunny man , a hessian bag half over his head and balancing a pan on his shoulder.

“The highlight of my life was the time when the cart went down the hill and off the bridge, tipping the entire contents into the creek.”

One of our main irritations was the flies that invaded the house with no flyscreens. The group enthusiastically conjured up memories of flypapers hanging from the ceiling and thousands of little black flies descending on unwatched food.

Still, it wasn’t all doom and gloom.

“I remember the kitchen with the old dresser,” said Leslye. “It had lead-light windows and there was a place for everything: drawers for cutlery and shelves for plates and a special compartment for groceries.”

The group agreed that a kitchen with a dresser and fuel-stove and a table (which was used for almost everything including homework and, occasionally, when the necessity arose, the removal of tonsils) was the centre of the home.

But can we really call them the good old days?

Museum hosts Australian War Memorial exhibition — MELISE COLEMAN —

A touring exhibition from the Australian War Memorial will give Orange residents an insight into life during times of war when it opens at Orange Regional Museum.

Hearts and minds: wartime propaganda explores how wartime propaganda posters were used during the First and Second World Wars.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd welcomed the exhibition and encouraged residents of Orange and surrounding towns to take the time to visit such an interesting display while it is in the Central West.

“We appreciate the Australian War Memorial sharing its exhibitions with us and offering regional residents the opportunity to access these important collections,” he said.

“As the city commemorated Remembrance Day only a couple of weeks ago, this exhibition provides a timely opportunity for us all to learn more about what life was like back in wartime and the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women.”

The remarkable exhibition displays 39 framed posters selected from the Memorial’s world-class poster collection

to allow comparisons between different nations and their approaches to propaganda over time.

It includes some of the world’s most iconic propaganda posters created by leading graphic artists of the twentieth century, including: The famous “I Want You” US Army poster created by James Montgomery Flagg and featuring the character of Uncle Sam. “The Blonde Bombshell” poster created by Abram Games, which was banned by the British Government during the Second World War for being too risqué.

The now iconic “Keep Calm and Carry On” British national security poster.

Director of the Australian War Memorial Matt Anderson said these posters and images help us to reflect on the wartime experiences both at home and abroad at a time of great peril.

“In this digital age of the internet, social media and smart phones, Hearts and Minds gives a unique insight into how we communicated during wartime,” he said.

“The propaganda posters demonstrate the fear, trauma and the humour that was present throughout the community at the time; and how propaganda was used to inspire people and to enlist them during the darkest days of the war.”

The Memorial holds a collection of more than 10,000 wartime posters, from government-issued campaign prints to handmade placards protesting the war in Vietnam.

‘Hearts and minds’ introduces the collection while focusing on Australian home-front propaganda during the First and Second World Wars.

The incredible exhibition will be displayed in Orange Regional Museum until 14 March 2021.

Positively Geared: How Lloyd Edge found financial independence through property investment — JOANTHAN ROE —

Orange-born Lloyd Edge found financial independence through property investment and he has now written a best-selling book to help others emulate his journey to success.

“What I explain in my book is I educate people on how to move into markets, how to find solid investment properties, how to value property accurately, how to negotiate and win at auctions, how to create equity in properties regardless of what the markets are doing and how to build a team of professionals around you to advise you on property purchases,” said 46-year-old Lloyd.

Completing his schooling in Orange, Lloyd move to Sydney to pursue a career in music. He completes his music studies at university and became a professional musician, conductor and later a music teacher.

But looking ahead, Lloyd said he realised that teaching music wasn’t a path to financial stability.

“So I started to buy property and invest in property,” he said. “I developed a little strategy and kept doing it over the years to the point that I ended up getting more income from my property than what I was actually earning in my normal job throughout the year. So that allowed me to retire from music and just follow

Anthony Kennedy – A MAN OF MANY MEDIUMS

The Orange Art Society’s Featured Artist for December, Anthony Kennedy, first started art over 40 years ago when he painted two paintings out of house paint.

Renowned local artist, Greg Turner saw them and encouraged Anthony to join the Art Society to have some lessons. He attended workshops run by local artists like Ted Lewis, Robert Knight, Herman Pekel, Joe Penn and Tony Mason, just to name a few.

“It has been a rewarding experience and a great way forward for one’s journey in art,” said Anthony. “I have works across most mediums, these include oils, acrylics and my latest love, mixed media inks, which I truly enjoy. Pen and wash can be a time waster but it keeps the mind busy.”

Over the years, Anthony has exhibited his work widely and has sold his art both locally and overseas, which he said has been a great encouragement to continue on his art adventure.

“I love to see people enjoy my art. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction... without

art in one’s life makes a very dull place,” said Anthony, “I still have those first paintings hanging on my wall. The best advice I have been given was by Greg Turner who encouraged me to keep these paintings to enable me to look back on my journey. I would encourage any new artist to do the same and cherish them.”

“I would like to thank Copper Brown who was a very patient teacher at the art rooms in my early days and acknowledge the fun times spent with many of my fellow artists who give their time freely to help others to achieve.”

By Greg McFarland TO understand the dispute, you have to start with a road.

Or, more precisely, what a road is, what it represents.

When a road is first carved out of the landscape, it is just a scar cut through the bush.

And in the beginning, it is simply a way to go from here to there.

But as houses are built along it, and farms grow around it, a road becomes both a symbol of progress and a part of local self-identity.

This road, at the centre of what happened afterward, began as a humble farm track, literally bulldozed out of the scrub by the State Government to provide access to land blocks being offered to returned soldiers after World War Two. The year was 1950.

The track began at the Newton Highway and firstly ran between two new land blocks; one settled by the Mackenzie clan, the other taken up by the Sullivan family. And then the rough road continued through the bush for a few kilometres without any new blocks for a while (as the country here was rangy scrubland and unfit for cropping), but further on the land became flat again and there were two more farms created before the track petered out.

From then until now, the track had remained a dead-end dirt road, nothing about it changed apart from occasional grading by the council.

And in all that time, the road remained without an official signpost, although around these parts it was always known as Mackenzie’s Road, because the Mackenzies were the only original Soldier Settlement block holders to survive.

The holders of the two more distant blocks had not managed to make a success of agriculture and walked off in the 1960s, their names soon forgotten and their holdings reverting to being vacant council land.

That left the Mackenzies and the Sullivans facing each across the road after the turnoff from the highway. But when the Sullivans’ only son died in a road accident in the 1980s, they left and new people, Jean and Henry Holm, purchased the property.

The Holms were flower growers and they produced blooms of every kind and sold these at a stall at the highway intersection for thirty 38

years, until Henry got too old and they sold their holding to the Mackenzies and retired to the coast.

So, it ended up that after 70 years, the Mackenzies were the first and last farmers left on the road.

Then came a new and unexpected development.

Large deposits of lime had been found on the two distant, failed land blocks and the council had sold a long-term lease to a company to dig out the lime and flog it off to farmers as a cheap fertilizer.

As part of the deal, the council had undertaken to upgrade the road for the six kilometres it took to reach the highway from the back blocks.

With the benefit of modern roadmaking, the council soon widened and straightened the road.

They took out all the dips and sharp corners that had been there since the track had first been clawed out by a bulldozer that had simply followed the lie of the land.

The Mackenzies had been well pleased to see the rejuvenation of the road.

For several weeks, Bill Mackenzie, the middleaged second-generation leader of the family, had spent a lot of time on the front verandah watching the roadwork going on.

He saw it all: the tipper trucks bringing in loads of gravel, the yellow graders moving backwards and forwards, the council workers in their shiny safety helmets darting about like busy ants.

What he most enjoyed seeing, in the last few days of the roadwork, was the installation of a galvanized steel pole on the highway edge; it was about three metres tall but otherwise unremarkable to the passing eye.

But to Bill, it was remarkable because it was clearly going to be a signpost, the first ever on this road.

A day or so later, when the earthmoving equipment had been transported to the next job, and the newly rebuilt road was sitting quietly awaiting the lime trucks that would soon be running, a council utility pulled up next to the post.

A council worker alighted from the vehicle and bolted a sign to the post, it took no more than a couple of minutes, and then the ute sped away.

Bill Mackenzie missed this simple act, he had

been on his tractor in a back paddock, working up the soil for a crop planting.

But when he returned to the house at dusk, and came out onto the verandah for his traditional end-of-day beer, he instantly noticed the dim white shape in the near distance.

He hopped off the verandah and walked out of the farm gate. Before he walked up to the highway edge where the signpost was cemented in, he paused for a moment to look back down the road: gun-barrel straight now, much wider now, still technically a gravel road but an allweather one that could carry 40-tonne trucks.

In the soft pink light, the road almost gleamed in its newness.

It was an impressive sight, Bill thought, as he turned and walked to see the sign. He was excited to see it, he had been eagerly anticipating it.

The sign, crowning the newly rebuilt road, was going to be a source of great family pride.

Bill Mackenzie read the sign.

Read it again.

And he could not comprehend it at all.

At first, he was dumbfounded.

Then angry.

He read the sign aloud, in a bemused wrath: ‘Garner’s Road.

‘Garner’s Road!

‘B----- Garner’s Road!’ *** THE BETRAYAL HAD OCCURRED two months earlier at the Greek restaurant, which was universally regarded as the best place in town to eat.

Dining at the top table were the mayor and general manager of the Jericho Shire Council.

And the third person at table was their guest, the owner/developer of the soon-to-be lime quarry, one John Garner.

The purpose of the meal was to celebrate the signing of the contract for the new limeworks.

Garner, who owned a gravel quarry in the next town up the highway, was well pleased with the deal.

The council was going to pay all the costs to upgrade the entry road, the lime deposit rights had been sold to him for a song, and he already had the quarry equipment available at his other business to harvest it.

So, he had not really anticipated more, but a greedy person is a greedy person, and if something extra and free is waved in front of them, well, what do you expect?

It was the Mayor, Royce Bassett, who caused it all.

He was an old rooster who loved the sound of his own voice, who relished his family name (one of the finest in the district), and who particularly enjoyed being the centre of attention.

One of his tendencies, especially after a drink or two, was to feel warm and generous and subsequently start promising things that he shouldn’t.

The council general manager saw the warning

John Garner had been planning to pay a signwriter to set up a commercial sign in some farmer’s roadside paddock, pointing the way to his business.

This new idea was much better – particularly because it would save him even more money, because now he didn’t need a signwriter at all.

They contemplated it over a brandy.

Garner was curious about one thing.

‘But what’s it called now?’ he wanted to know.

Mayor Bassett waved his concern aside.

‘It has no name – in fact, it never has. And I’ve seen all the paperwork on it.’

Garner liked the idea. In fact, he liked it so much, he wanted more.

‘What if it was just Garner’s Road? After all, everyone already knows I’m the quarry man around these parts.’

The Mayor glanced at the general manager who, knowing he would be stuck with this mess whichever way it went, shrugged. *** A FEW WEEKS AFTER THE LUNCH ….

Corky Stewart, the works supervisor at the Jericho Shire Council for many years, was sitting at his desk one morning to carry out what he thought would be a most simple task.

The council was nearly finished remaking Mackenzie’s Road for the new limeworks, and he had to order a sign from the relevant State Government Department.

He just had one matter of concern – he didn’t know exactly how the family name was spelt (Mackenzie? McKenzie?) and he liked to get these little things correct.

So, he rang the Mayor’s secretary to confirm the details.

It should have taken her just a few seconds to find the information, but this time it was half an hour before she rang back.

That was unusual.

‘It’s not going to be Mackenzie’s Road, it’s going to be Garner’s Road,’ she informed him.

Stewart was surprised, to say the least, but he was still a council employee and he had a job to do, so he asked her to spell out the name so he could order the sign.

The whole business would have probably ended there, if it wasn’t Friday.

Because Friday was the end of the working week, and Corky Stewart always went to the pub for a counter meal.

And while there, he usually shared a couple of bevvies with his old mate, the reporter for the local newspaper. And sometimes, over lunch, a few council matters slipped out. ***

BUT IT WAS NOT until the sign was well and truly installed that the reporter followed up on it.

At the time Corky Stewart had told him about it, there were more interesting things going on. And so, the reporter had more or less ignored what sounded like a minor signage issue until there was a quiet day in the office and the editor was urgently looking for a story – any story.

The reporter decided to visit the Mackenzie place.

Bill Mackenzie was not only happy to talk, he was furious. Most of the things he said about the council couldn’t be reprinted in a family newspaper, but the reporter had enough for a yarn. *** THE MAYOR WAS SHOCKED by the front-page headline in the next day’s issue: FARMER ANGRY OVER ROAD RENAMING Sitting in his council office next day, Bassett immediately made it the general manager’s problem.

‘How can it be a re-naming?’ the Mayor wanted to know. ‘On the paperwork you showed me, there was no name, was there?’

The general manager took it all calmly.

He suggested a simple rebuttal to the newspaper, based on that very fact they were discussing, that the road had never been officially named in the first place.

He placated Bassett with words to the effect that this was a mere storm in a tea cup.

The Mayor was happier now.

When he went home to Deidre, his current girlfriend (and technically his employee since he had recently landed her a cushy job on the council), and she welcomed him with a glass of wine and a hot dinner, he felt even better.

But the feeling didn’t last. *** IT WAS CLEAR, from the next day’s issue of the newspaper, that the reporter had been busy.

The morning headline read: FARMERS BOYCOTT LIMEWORKS OVER NAME According to the accompanying story, the local primary producers were refusing to buy from the new limeworks, in support of their maligned colleague, Bill Mackenzie.

It got worse.

During the morning, the Mayor received a call from his closest supporter, Councillor Russ Williams, who in his day job was the town plumber.

Williams had solid contacts with the farming community, and was now letting the Mayor know just how good.

‘The bushies are fired up over this one, Royce,’ he told the Mayor bluntly. ‘What on earth possessed you to do it?’

Bassett stumbled through a self-defence on the matter, but Williams was unimpressed.

‘Do you know who this bloke is?’ he demanded.

‘Who, Mackenzie? What about him?’

‘He’s only the Chairman of the Farmers’ Federation around here, he’s got a lot of clout with the cockies,’ Williams said. ‘What were you thinking? Why don’t you just change the name back, for goodness sake?’

This last comment seemed to make sense, and Bassett was leaning towards it, until he had lunch with Deidre, who was strongly against it.

She thought it would make the Mayor look weak, it would look to the town that he was backing down from a challenge, and that was not the kind of man she was going to be with.

She was quite adamant about it.

Bassett was noticing that Deidre was getting strongly opinionated about a few things now that she was on the council payroll and not slaving away at the hairdresser’s salon any more. But he didn’t want to upset her, and eventually her words stirred him up and he decided to hold his ground and keep the name unchanged. *** HOWEVER, THINGS CONTINUED to get worse for Royce Bassett and the council.

The next day dawned with the headline: LIMEWORKS BOSS SAYS NOT HIS FAULT The newspaper quoted John Garner, who was ‘going broke through no fault of his own’.

Garner said he was being blacklisted by the farming community and had not sold a truckload of fertilizer since the limeworks opened.

He claimed that he had never asked for the road to be named after him, it was all the personal wish of the Mayor.

There was also a second story, a poll conducted by the newspaper, which found that 74 per cent of Jericho town residents wanted the road to be called Mackenzie rather than Garner.

Bassett was still digesting all this news at breakfast when his phone rang.

It was his key ally, Councillor Williams, who was apparently no longer his right-hand man.

Williams informed him that he was not able to support him any longer on this issue, and that ‘other councillors feel the same’.

A shiver ran up Bassett’s spine.

This was, for the first time ever, a clear threat to his holding of the mayoral chains.

He would have consulted Deidre immediately, but she had already gone off to her early morning yoga class.

So instead, he picked up the phone and rang the long-suffering council general manager for a solution. *** THE next day’s issue of the local newspaper was headlined: STATE GOVT TO RULE ON NAME ISSUE The accompanying story explained that the council would request the Geographic Places & Names Board to make a decision on the validity DECEMBER 3 — 9 , 2020 39

And a fortnight later, which was now midDecember, the board held a tribunal meeting in the auditorium of the Jericho RSL club.

It consisted of a chairman, sent up on a day trip from the city, and a record taker, who was a typist brought over from the local court house.

They sat behind a simple table covered with a starched white cloth.

In front of the table were two sections of chairs, set slightly apart. It reminded Bill Mackenzie of the seating at a wedding.

The Mackenzies and their farming supporters took one side; the Mayor and the various functionaries and staff of the council sat on the other.

There was quite a crowd, as the tribunal chairman remarked on as he began proceedings by asking the council to explain its decision to name the road the way it had.

A man in a grey suit stood up and introduced himself as a solicitor working for the council on the matter.

He was smooth and confident as he outlined council’s case, which was that the newly named Garner’s Road was previously only ever known as an unnamed access road under the Soldier Settlement Scheme.

‘That was in 1950, and the Lands Office has confirmed this map’ … and here the solicitor handed up to the chairman, and then to Bill Mackenzie, copies of a map … ‘I draw your attention to the Crown seal in the corner, put on three days ago, which shows this map is currently correct,’ the solicitor said.

He had a grave and serious voice, it was impressive to hear, even to Bill’s ears.

‘This map proves the road in question has only ever been known as Access Road No. 43 and now Garner’s Road.

‘The council position is that it is within its rights, under the Local Government Act, to allocate a new name to an untitled road, in order to recognize a project of major economic importance, which of course the limeworks is,’ the legal expert concluded.

Then it was Bill Mackenzie’s turn to speak. It seemed a bit hopeless at this point, if the law really was against him.

But he could still talk about his feelings on the matter, and so he did, going through his family’s heritage, the fact that the family had long been the only one continuously living on the road in question, and finishing up by reading out a long list of names that he had compiled of other local families who had had roads named after them.

He finished talking and waited.

The chairman had been making notes while the solicitor and Bill had talked, and he kept scribbling for a few moments before taking his reading glasses off and setting these down on the table.

Then he began speaking.

‘Thank you all for your attendance today. I have heard both sides now and wish to make some comments.’

The chairman looked over at the council side, and his look appeared stern, at least to Bill.

‘Council has put its case, and it is a lawful case but, in my view, it was harshly done and without the usual consultation with the community,’ he said.

‘It is regrettable to me that this road matter was not addressed long before, many years ago, and we would not have ended up here today.’

Then the chairman looked down at the Mackenzies, and it seemed to Bill that now the gaze was friendly.

‘Mr Bill Mackenzie and his family believe they have a historic right to have the road named after them. This is certainly understandable given what has generally happened to other families living on other roads in this district.’

Bill felt good hearing these words, he thought they might be winning.

The feeling was not to last long.

‘In conclusion, I will take these submissions on board and make a written determination in early January. However, I must state right now, in order not to give false hope to the Mackenzie family, that the determination will have to be in favour of the council.

‘Mr Mackenzie, I have no doubt of your personal connection with this road … but unfortunately, you have not been able today to produce any written proof of the family name ever being used previously.

‘If at any future time some documentary evidence can be found, then we can re-visit the issue.

‘But until then, the Garner’s Road name stands.’

She brought the drink to him and went back to the kitchen.

He pondered for a moment, then switched off the set and turned his attention to the pile of mail on the chairside table.

On top was a copy of the local paper, from a few days before, headlined: BOARD BACKS COUNCIL ON NAME Underneath were a small pile of envelopes: bills and Christmas cards. He put the bills and newspaper aside, and started opening the cards.

He opened Jean Holm’s first.

He missed the Holms; they had been good neighbours. Henry had passed but Jean still wrote every year without fail.

When he opened her card, a folded-up page fell out. It was a pamphlet of some kind.

Jean had written in the card: ‘Found this when I was cleaning up. Thought you might get a laugh out of it – something from the old days.’

Bill unfolded the pamphlet, and recognized what it was straight away – a cheap tourism promotion, produced by the council back in the 1990s to encourage visitors to support local businesses.

This one publicized the Holms’ (famous at the time) roadside flower stall. On the front was a picture of Jean and Henry, smiling at the camera from the midst of a sea of roses.

Bill read the pamphlet, which listed all of the varieties of flowers grown by the Holms, and the prices at the time.

Then he saw something. And then read it again.

A WEEK OR SO LATER …

It was Christmas Eve in the Mackenzie homestead but the festive season cheer was not being felt by the family patriarch.

At this time of year, Bill Mackenzie stopped doing his regular duties and took it easy. It was also usually a time when he took stock of things, and gave thanks for his health, the continued wellbeing of his family, and the fine season.

Overall, he had been blessed with a fortunate life, but right now he found that hard to acknowledge, because the road sign business still rankled him.

As he sat now in his favourite chair, morosely watching television, there was an occasional rumble outside.

Following the board meeting, the farmers’ boycott was over and their trucks were running to the limeworks. Bill couldn’t blame them, but each passing truck reminded him that he had lost.

His wife, in the midst of preparing Christmas lunch for the following day, poked her head in the doorway at that moment and asked what program he was watching.

He didn’t even know.

‘Some rubbish,’ he told her gruffly.

She shook her head.

‘You haven’t opened the cards yet. There’s one in there from Jean. Why don’t I get you a beer and you sit there and do it now,’ she suggested.

And he turned the page over and read the other side, just to be sure.

His wife nearly dropped the roast when she heard the whooping from the lounge room.

She was even more astounded when she saw her husband doing a jig on the carpet. She hadn’t seen him dance since their wedding.

‘What on earth …’ she started.

He was waving a bit of paper at her.

‘Read it!’ he insisted.

She had to get her glasses first, then she glanced through the brochure.

‘Oh, it’s Jean and Henry.’

‘Not that! The other side … at the bottom!’

She was puzzled, and read it aloud to try and work out what he was getting at.

‘Produced by the Jericho Shire Council to promote tourism in the district,’ she read dutifully.

‘Now go back to the photo on the front!’ her husband commanded.

She read aloud again: ‘Jean and Henry Holm operate their flower market every day just seven kilometres from Jericho – situated on the Newton Highway’ … and she paused, in astonishment, and looked up at her husband, who nodded for her to continue.

‘Situated on the Newton Highway AT MACKENZIE’S ROAD!’

As director of the CJD Support Group Network I would appreciate the opportunity to respond to an article by Bob Holland in regard to his wife suffering with suspected CJD. My heart goes out to Bob and Jackie as dealing with a suspected diagnosis of CJD is extremely heartbreaking as CJD is an always fatal neurodegenerative rare brain disease in humans, also known as prion disease with no effective treatment of cure.

I was contacted by a concerned community member due to the reference to Mad Cow disease in the article and I would appreciate the opportunity to provide some information and more understanding about CJD and to remove any stigma or fear that the words ‘Mad Cow disease’ creates.

There are 3 forms of prion disease in humans:. Sporadic CJD, Genetic prion diseases and Acquired forms of prion disease.

Sporadic CJD is believed to be the result of a spontaneous change in the normal form of the prion protein which occurs at random in about 1 to 2 people per million of the population per year, which equates to a life time risk of 1 in 5000.

Sporadic CJD accounts for 85 to 90% of all CJD cases.

Prion diseases are also unique in that they can be genetic and are transmissible.

Genetic prion diseases account for approximately 10 to 15% of cases and occur due to a mutation in the prion protein gene (PRNP) that is inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion resulting in familial CJD, Gerstmann-StrausslerScheinker syndrome (GSS) and Fatal familial Insomnia (FFI) Acquired prion diseases which include Iatrogenic or medically acquired CJD, Kuru and Variant CJD. All acquires forms of prion disease are extremely rare and almost extinct. These are the forms that are known to incubate for up to 40 years or more.

Iatrogenic or medically acquired CJD The prion protein becomes infectious when it mis-folds which has led to transmission of CJD by contaminated surgical instructions, Dara mater grafts from cadavers and used in brain surgery and also the use of contaminated human pituitary hormones used for fertility treatment and for short statue during the 1970s and up to 1985.

Kuru was an acquired form of prion disease affecting the Fore people in Papua New Guinea due to ritualistic endocannibalism but this practice was outlawed in 1950 and has now essentially eradicated Kuru.

Variant CJD, associated with the consumption of contained meat products from bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) affected cattle. The media naming of BSE affected cattle as ‘Mad Cow disease’ sadly flowed onto individuals who developed Variant CJD. There have only been 232 cases of variant CJD worldwide (mainly in UK) to date which in comparison with the number of cases of the human form of CJD is extremely low and very rare and clinically quite different to the human form of CJD. To date there have been no identified cases of Variant CJD in Australia or New Zealand and both countries have BSE free livestock.

In Australia we have approximately 50 cases of CJD each year, the majority being sporadic CJD. CJD effects both males and females with an average age of 55 to 70 but sadly illness onset can be in adolescence or as late as the ninth decade.

The average duration of illness is 4 to 6 months but again this varies greatly from only weeks to 2 years or even a little longer but 80% of CJD patients pass away within 1 year of onset of symptoms with only a very small number surviving longer than 2 years.

Confirmation of a diagnosis of definite CJD can only be confirmed by brainonly autopsy and ruling out a genetic cause for a CJD patients illness can only be established or ruled out by testing of the DNA of the CJD patient. Families are giving the opportunity to have a blood sample taken in life for DNA extraction and storage so that future DNA (PRNP) testing can be organised if/when required.

CJD is transmissible but not contagious so caring for patient with CJD does not pose any risk.

Like the person who was at the roundabout near James Sheahan on November 23 and beeped me when I was going straight through and had plenty of time you obviously had plenty of time to beat me but your child slowed down anyway. Your child is going to expect a lot of drivers on the road and road rage is not the way to move drivers along it’s going to encourage drivers to intimidate your child. Just because you’re teaching your child how to drive doesn’t mean you own the road.

A VERY BIG THUMBS DOWN to all the disrespectful people in this town. I was at the Orange Health Service (hospital) the other day and was disgusted to see the state of the car park in front. There was rubbish everywhere, e.g. blue gloves, used face masks, cigarette butts, tissues, vomit bags, and even a baby nappy, just to name a few items.

Some people are just so disgusting. They should show a bit more respect for public places. Show a bit of pride.
