Talking POINTS

with BOB HOLLAND

Like so many other projects in Orange these days, the South Orange Shopping Centre proposal appears set for controversy. Among the concerns is the impact it may have on existing retailers in the CBD. Happy days ahead!

Recognising heroic history

Sports Precinct proposal opposed

Proposed heritage orders on east Orange’s “Duration Cottages” will help preserve a vital part of our wartime history, a local historian believes.

Creating a sports precinct at Bloomfield would destroy “a ready-made botanical garden” opponents say.

The latest Covid-19 situation seems to be impacting on people in a variety of ways. Some people it appears, are staying at home and not going out unless it’s absolutely necessary, while others at the other end of the scale give the impression that it’s no big deal. I think it is a big deal but how to negotiate it is anybody’s guess. Whatever one’s viewpoint, I’d encourage everyone to be kind and respect other people’s views or actions, dealing with this is as much a health issue as it is a test of character for all of us. I saw a crazy but enjoyable movie last week called Line of Duty. It stars Aaron Eckhart and it’s quite unusual but full of action. I found it entertaining, and I’m a bit fussy with my taste. At least one reader didn’t agree with the thoughts expressed in our story about the Duration Cottage heritage listings last week, I’m sure there would be others as well. Heritage issues are always one of those things aren’t they, and I doubt if people will ever agree most times. Personally, like so many other things, I think heritage enthusiasts sometimes go too far with some of their thinking. Maintaining heritage buildings is important of course, but only up to a point. I feel the same way about many green issues.

Funeral homes still at front-line

Life is an opportunity and students in Orange Anglican Grammar School’s Year 12 are determined to make the most of what 2020 throws at them.

Limits of attendees at funerals has been one of the most heartbreaking aspects of the coronavirus restrictions.
