Talking POINTS

with BOB HOLLAND

During the week it was pointed out to me that Denis Gregory, a wellknown local and columnist in the Central Western Daily had a veiled shot at me and our newspaper through his column last week. He’s entitled, at least he’s reading Newswatch. I would however point out to Denis and anyone else, our Back Page each week is where we allow space for people to have their say about anything and everything, including disagreeing with me. He’s welcome to contribute at any time. To that end, and to give his thoughts broader coverage, I’ve taken the liberty of reproducing Denis’s CWD comments on our Back Page this week. Perry Oval was well discussed at Tuesday’s Council meeting and for once I think some good sense prevailed. Councillors decided to defer the matter to take stock of the varying issues and presumably then make some more informed decisions about what needs to or could be done. What was interesting about the discussion was the fact that it was raised that Perry Oval is a Council asset and as that, it had basically not been maintained as Council assets generally are. I found that strange. The upshot of the discussion suggests to me that Council has some very clear things they could do. First priority, upgrade the state of the field itself and that involves irrigation. Next, see if the amenities block can be economically and satisfactorily repaired to become useful again. Lastly, lighting on the fields was mentioned, again if what’s there can be utilized without expensive upgrading or replacement, maybe the lighting still has a place. The state if the field surface must surely be a must, the rest optional. Either way, the Council discussion was a good one and probably should have been had before spontaneously and randomly allocating $50,000 to the project at an earlier Council meeting. I’m told Council is also working on a set of flags to ensure flags are flying all year round on both sides of the 20 or more flagpoles along Summer Street. This is something the Put Orange First group has been pushing for, for over a year.
