MOUNT BIKE TRACK A WIN FOR EVERYONE!

The proposed shopping centre at Bloomfield is going to generate a lot of divided opinion if this week’s Council meeting is any guide. Councillors and the public, and the business community all seem split over a number of issues. It’s going to be interesting. Orange, like so many other centres, is also divided over how hard we should push to get people here, especially visitors from Sydney and other so-called hot spots. Some believe encouraging visitors is inviting more Covid trouble, others believe it doesn’t matter, while other believe our economy can’t do without these visitors and the risk is worth it.

Everyone’s a winner over proposed mountain bike tracks for Mount Canobolas — keen rider and committed environmentalist — Rodney Farrell believes. Locals should be pleased with Orange City Council’s recent decision to apply for tenders for comprehensive environmental assessments of the project, he added. Reflexive opposition from some environmental groups

already to the plans ignores the greater opportunities that this initiative holds for the Mount as well as the city. “Can we get a revenue stream, an income, that can go to looking after it better? It could make people aware of how good it is,” he argued. “We want the public to know that it’s not just bikeriders who would benefit from this; there’s a lot of positives; Council has budgeted $500,000, so it will be a comprehensive study.”

FOR ORANGE

It’s also interesting that we’re hearing how hard our tourism operators are doing it at the moment, yet speaking to a local café owner this week, he said they are busier than they have ever been and so is everyone else. That shouldn’t surprise anyone given that most people’s options for doing things are eating, drinking or shopping. It was also mentioned by one Councillor at this week’s Council meeting that he’d noticed visitors everywhere lately and it was commonly agreed that people have been flocking to Orange since Covid travel restrictions were eased. Very confusing times indeed! I walked around the outside of Cook Park on Tuesday this week and couldn’t help but notice the number of people, particularly Mum’s with young kiddies who were there enjoying the park, its facilities and the glorious weather, it was a heartwarming site. Cook Park, despite the weather conditions and everything else, certainly offers visitors something special, not necessarily spectacular but nice none the less. I understand that a lot of listeners are still not very happy with Southern Cross Austereo for canning the local breakfast show on one of their stations. Being a staunch supporter of genuine “local” media, I think it’s appalling that a place like Orange doesn’t have its own fully local dedicated commercial radio station. At least we get some local content on Radio 2EL during the day and the local community station 107.5FM still features local content, local presenters for the most part. Thank goodness for that. I saw a fascinating movie recently called Greyhound starring Tom Hanks. If you get a chance to see it, do so, it’s good entertainment.
