Talking POINTS

with BOB HOLLAND

Someone contacted our office this week asking if we could get some seats put around the CBD so that elderly people could rest a bit. Have we not got seating for that already? If not, I suggest you get into one of our Councillor’s ears, it’s sure to create another CWD photo opportunity for them.

DAM IT!

The Hearts for Orange TV Campaign on Prime TV promoting shopping in Orange and getting results. Several of the businesses featured in the ads are reporting good feedback and results even though they only appear very briefly in the ads. One comment we heard that was not expected was passed on to one of my staff last weekend. It went “Bob must have finally got to the Council, they’re now running ads on TV for local shops”. If only?

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME; LOCAL WATER EXPERT BELIEVES New storage capacity — including a new dam for Orange — will be the only way to provide water security for Orange’s growing population, a water delivery expert has claimed. Climate change, drier seasonal conditions, tree-changers escaping our crowded cities — all these factors will eventually force the hand of local authorities on the matter, long-term council engineer, Bob Wyllie believes. Orange City Council’s current integrated water resource strategy that utilises a range of sources including the main supply at Suma Park, a pipeline to the Macquarie River, and stormwater harvesting, was fiddling around the edges of the problem. He said that a lifetime battling the chronic need for water in inland Australia, has shown that you can never have enough

of the precious stuff. “I was 40 years in this field; including as engineering director at Cabonne Council; … I’ve been at it now for 50 years.” He believes that the automatic opposition to any new dams, in any circumstances, by environmental groups makes the current political situation too difficult for risk-averse politicians and bureaucrats. “I think it’s a dilemma, but one that they will have to face at some time.”

FOR ORANGE

Speaking of Hearts for Orange, there’s been some real momentum happening since we started this initiative and it’s about to get even better. Let me encourage all our local retail shop owners to find out more about upcoming activities because above all else, Hearts for Orange is trying to increase your chances for more customers over coming months and they have some very clever promotions coming up over the next couple of months. If you have a shop, please contact Executive Officer Amanda Spalding on 0479 179 779 or amanda@heartsfororange.com. au to find out what opportunities are coming up. Trust me, it will be worth your while to make the contact. Isn’t it great to see the trees blossoming again and the cold grey look of winter disappearing? Paul Toole’s appointment as Leader of the State Nationals will be seen by some as a boost for the area, albeit mainly in Bathurst. Hasn’t he had a fast track up the ranks? Personally, the jury is still out on him for me. For those interested, I’ve written a bit about our Back Page Letters to the Editor opportunity in my We can do better column in this issue. If you have a mind to write a letter occasionally, let me encourage you to read what I have to say. We’d love to see more letters from readers each week, makes Newswatch more interesting.
