Talking POINTS

with BOB HOLLAND

I guess one of the big talking points right now would be how the changes to the Jobkeeper allowance this week will impact on people and businesses? It will be interesting to see what happens with businesses that have survived on the back of Jobkeeper until now but are no longer eligible. There is also movement heading towards the next Local Government elections in September next year. They are still 12 months away but interested people are now starting to talk the talk and move into action. One area that is soon to become a talking point will be a push for more representation by women on the next Orange Council.

From the big lockdown to the great escape; Orange tourism is booming! October Long Weekend is looking to be one of the best on records, local tourism operators say. Colour City is enjoying an unprecedented boom in intrastate visitors with State and national lockdowns encouraging many locals to see country NSW for the first time. Enjoying a sunny picnic with superlative spring weather in Robertson Park recently, Caleb, Ella, and Taylor couldn’t be happier: “We’re from the central coast (Wamberal), we’re just

here on a holiday,” Ella said. “We were going to go to Echuca, but we had to change our plans with the lockdown in Victoria.” “We’re here for the week, we were going to be for MondayFriday, but we added a day,” Caleb added. “We’re really enjoying it, just seeing the sights, it’s a lovely, beautiful town,” he said enthusiastically. “We’re just having a bit of a look around, ‘Good Eddies’ and ‘Heifer Station’, we’re staying in a local ‘Airbnb’,” Ella added. “It’s a lovely place to visit,” she concluded.

The new light poles in Summer Street are also sure to come in for discussion. It will be interesting to see what difference they make to the feel of the main street. I am having some difficulty thinking they’ll do anything for the street during the day while shops are open. They seem more of a nighttime attraction to me and I would have preferred to see something that added to the daylight shopping experience at this stage. You’ll note we have several letters from readers again this week. That’s great! Keep them coming folks, I for one would love to hear your views on a whole range of things. Our Hearts for Orange initiative continues to gain momentum as each week goes by, and given what retailers are facing over coming months, it’s going to be interesting to see what impact the various promotional activities will have. Retailers in Orange are encouraged to find out more about the program and then consider becoming part of it. For more information, go to the Hearts for Orange website www. heartsfororange.com.au or contact Executive Officer Amanda Spalding 0479 179 779 or amanda@heartsfororange.com.au Our City Watch column is a tad different this week. If you’ve ever wondered who’s who at Council and who’s responsible for what, have a read of City Watch in this issue, I think you may find it interesting. Copies of Newswatch are available in a variety of places around Orange each week, if you think copies could be placed somewhere else as well, let us know. Call April 6361 3575 with suggestions.
