ART EXPLOSION TO CREATE A COLOUR CITY CHRISTMAS
with BOB HOLLAND
Changing the speed limit in the Orange CBD to 40kms an hour is a current topic of conversation and it’s sure to get plenty of attention. I for one, think it’s unnecessary but what amuses me is the fact that Council is giving the public a say in the matter. Why? What a useless waste of time. Blind Freddy knows that there’ll be some for, some against and overall, only a handful of the community will say anything. At the end of the day Council will do what Council wants to do and even if they claim to base their decision on public opinion, it’s still anybody’s guess if it’s a good decision. Surely our Councillors can decide on this without seeking public opinion, and even if they are incapable of making a decision on their own, most of them should be in touch with a good cross section of the community anyway.
Pop-up art shows could be the Christmas miracle to help save Orange’s main street from a bleak 2020 yuletide. Art exhibitions in Orange’s hard-hit retail sector could provide a colourful festive season; under plans by distinguished Orange-based painter, Hank Spirek. Hank is taking his idea for pop-up art exhibitions to revitalise our central business district to Orange Council. Orange Mayor, Councillor Reg Kidd is excited by the proposal and has invited Hank to address an upcoming Council meeting to get the plan on track. He sees greater exposure and utilisation of Orange’s vibrant arts scene as another string in the bow to attracting tourist visitors to the Colour City. “When you go to Paris, say, you go for the food, the wine, the
architecture, the culture, but also the art galleries, Orange could be the same,” Cr Kidd said. “People want the full tourism experience ,” he added. Hank believes opening-up vacant CBD shopfronts could provide our coronavirus-impacted arts scene with fresh opportunities and create a vibrant and colourful industry that would attract thousands of visitors to Orange. “I’ve got five groups and seven individual painters interested… I know a lot of artists looking for studio space, we just don’t have the studio space!” Hank said. With long-term local government experience, he is happy to act as the go-between for artist seeking to promote their works to a wider audience.

FOR ORANGE
A 40k speed limit in the CBD to me is neither here nor there, what is far more important is doing something about the traffic issues we have in the CBD such as the intersection right outside Council’s front door on the corner of Byng Street and Lords Place. If ever there was an intersection in Orange that needed some attention, this must surely be it. Forget 40 kms speed limits and spend some time making intersections like this one safe, it’s LONG overdue and it’s right outside your front door for cry it out loud! Hearts for Orange is going great guns and I’m pleased to say we’re finally doing what our Council and others have forever failed to do, we’re supporting and advertising our local retailers and why shopping in Orange is such a good thing to do. Over recent weeks and months Hearts for Orange has sought financial support from our Council for the program without success, and I can now tell you that based on our recent experiences, we will no longer be asking Council for any help. It’s clear now that they do not have the same ‘heart’ for our non-hospitality retailers as we do. Keep watching OC Life for what’s coming up, it’s going to be great!
