“SEISMIC SHIFT” TO THE BUSH Colour City and the Harbour City are now competing for population, with Orange winning this David ersus Goliath battle.

Orange’s population is booming; and it’s at the cost of Sydney which for decades drew our best and most brilliant to the bright lights “Seismic shi\” in post-COVID Australia has seen Orange grow with the same net population last year as Sydney is expecting this year. And that’s in raw figures, not percentages. =e population of greater Sydney is forecast to rise by just 500 people in the year to next June and that’s exactly what Orange experienced last recorded year. “It’s a seismic shi\ in how our city is growing,” Orange Mayor and the Colour City’s number one fan, Councilor Reg Kidd said.

Talking POINTS

with DAVID DIXON

Interesting subject at last week’s Council meeting was a motion by Councillor Kevin Duffy regarding slander and libels. =e Council resolved to get someone to come and talk to the councillors in a closed session on the issue with several of our elected good and great curious about whether there was a specific issue that caused the matter to be raised. Most people are aware that our ratheronerous laws of defamation don’t actually apply both State and Federal Parliaments with MPs allowed to say pretty much anything they want to. However, as local government is not (yet) recognised in our Constitution, there are in effect few legal protections for those speaking at Council meetings. On a general note, our ouncillors still appear to have a problem in making definite decisions about DA, especially when any objection whatsoever is raised by the public, and despite what Council staff invariably recommend. =e proposed solar farm is the latest case in point. On that matter, our intrepid elected leader, Cr Kidd, recently visited a giant solar power farm outside the city of Wagga Wagga. He wanted to have a look at how the renewable energy provider operates with proposal for a five mega-watt solar farm for the Molong Road currently up before Council. One of our readers was curious about why the Level 2 Water Restrictions specify the hours of 6–9pm each altern te evening for watering their garden. =e reader felt that these hours should perhaps be later in the evening to avoid the still-hot sun at that daylight-saving time. Apparently though, Council will consider applications by affected individuals to amend those hours under request.
