with DAVID DIXON There are a few probity issues about the Development Application for the removal of trees at South Bloomfield to make way for the proposed Sports Stadium, sports fields, and athletics track that need to be answered. See our regular City Watch column inside for more information. Council gets a few brownie points for scheduling another Bulky and Scrap Metal Clean-up during February. A lot of people were disappointed to see these stop some time back. These clean-ups make a lot of people happy, not the least those who see the event as a scavenger hunt (which are apparently, strictly illegal). It would be interested to know the ratio the Council actually picks up against what community members scavenge!
Fireworks at this Tuesday evening’s community forum on plans to remove more than 500 trees for the proposed sports stadium at Bloomfield may only be round one in the battle of public opinion. On-site public inspection of the sports precinct’s south Orange site will be round two, if Orange Mayor, Councillor Reg Kidd has his way.
Tuesday’s event from about 5.30 in the Council Chambers is likely to follow the format for the hugely-popular community forum held before Christmas on proposed removal of a number of London Plane trees from Anson St as part of the pedestrian mall plan.

Orange’s Christmas lights certainly lit up the area around Robertson Park and Summer Street and a lot of people enjoyed the bright lights. We’re not sure what lights came into the $50,000 that Council purchased especially for Christmas, but it does appear you don’t get a lot for $50,000. One other observation was the number of people taking photos under the archway in Robertson Park, it was obviously a hit for taking photos at least. Recent passing of that old Country Party warhorse, Doug Anthony, was noted recently. While no-one doubts his effectiveness as a retail politician, some of us who remember such ancient history, never forgave him his part in that shameful episode of pragmatic politics that led to the sacking of the Whitlam Government in 1975. Newswatch found a pair of glasses in Woodward Street outside Emus this week. If you lost them, claim them from our Lords Place Office.
