COMING-IN LOUD AND CLEAR Hearts for Orange has come to the party on local media diversity ensuring the future of community broadcasting in the Colour City. Tough couple of years for local community radio station, FM107.5 is now history with donation of a fab new hi-tech transmitter that will save the station thousands in power costs while boosting its signal. “It’s extremely exciting for us, it’s definitely the most thrilling news we’ve had in ages,” Vice-President, Tina Hernando said. The transmitter offers environmental benefits of reduced power-usage with a stronger signal to enable the station to reach more communities in the central west. “It will save us heaps in power, which is very important as electricity usage is one of our main costs,” Station Secretary, Darrell Hair said.

Talking POINTS

with DAVID DIXON • When someone says something that is simply not true about you in the public arena, it can be damaging in a number of ways. Councillor Kevin Duffy said something that was totally-untrue about Hearts for Orange (HFO) in a letter-to-the-editor of the Central Western Daily last week. He claimed that HFO was linked with a number of other “complainers” over the Bloomfield Sports Stadium proposal. He claims a friend told him this. Well Kevin, your friend is very wrong. Given the good work HFO is doing within the community, they did not need this type of publicity; so HFO asked Cr Duffy to put an apology in to the CWD to correct his potentially-damaging claim. At the time of writing, he has not done so, nor has he contacted Hearts for Orange to discuss the matter. Disappointing from an elected official, wouldn’t you say? Especially one who recently raised concerns at Council about councillors copping similar unhelpful treatment across the various media platforms! • Sometimes a typographical mistake can be quite telling.

FOR ORANGE

A colleague pointed-out — in an earlier draft version of a story on the proposed Bloomfield Sports precinct — that I had incorrectly stated the cost as “$125 Million”. With Australia having the highest verified cost for stadium construction in the world (based on the international standard of cost per covered seat criteria); what odds are that the final bill due for the precinct — wherever it is built — could be more than the promised $25 million from the State Government? Australians love their sport and will quibble and complain over cost-blow-outs for hospitals, local roads, and bypasses, but rarely blink at the billions we spend on our sports arenas. Submissions for the removal of about 513 trees on the proposed site of the stadium close Friday, February 5.
