WHEREFORE FOR OLD DPI?

What can we do with the old Department of Primary Industries (DPI) head office in Orange?

Shops, large retailers, events, or innercity living? That is the question now being wrestled with by Orange Council. The answer could come from a recent presentation to Orange Council with big plans for the site. The question is, are they the same as those of Council? Owners want a free-hand on the site, Council has proposed restrictions on large retailers, and Mayor Reg Kidd would like to see it created into swish apartment units.

Talking POINTS

with DAVID DIXON Council mentioned how popular the new Robertson Park bauble (which featured on our front cover in December) was over Christmas — especially for photographs. The suggestion was made to bring it back at other times, possibly at Easter. But wouldn’t that be like that horrible new trend of hot-cross buns in September? Hasn’t grown on us… probably never will. The more you look at the new “Welcome to Orange” sign, the more it looks like it’s been constructed out of rusty, old, recycled materials, which was perhaps the point… It’s hard to get enthusiastic about it, especially given the $10,000-plus Council paid out in design costs alone. Inside on pages 15,16,17 we have our first, (probably the world’s first!) “The Council Game” featuring our team of shadow councilors giving their views on their first Council meeting. And wasn’t it a whopper, 1700-plus pages, and only delivered to the councillors on Friday afternoon.

Pretty vacant… When is a house not a home? This rhetorical question was posed a few weeks’ ago in Newswatch over a neatand-tidy public housing bungalow in Bel Air that’s been vacant for more than two years, and it still hasn’t been answered!

Letters, letters, letters,

FOR ORANGE

If Council staff were trying (we don’t think they are) to discourage potential council candidates for September’s local government elections, they know how to do it. “Our” councillors offered a range of perspectives at their first meeting, some taking a new look at decisions, others critiquing the performance of the current councillors in Orange. There must be some way for Council papers to be presented in a more-accessible form… We think you’ll like the idea! Turn inside and have a look. For all those Jeanine Bird fans, supporters, loathers and haters, Editor Bob Holland has an important article inside on the future of the column, Birds Eye View. Turn to page 19 and see what Bob has to say.
