Talking POINTS
with DAVID DIXON • Went on my first visit to a nursing home since the big lockdown. People working in the “caring careers” must certainly have had a long and trying pandemic. Having resisted wearing a face-mask — even on Sydney public transport — up until now, I was struck by how difficult the simplest task such as walking, and speaking are in such safety garb. I also suffered a sense of claustrophobia and couldn’t wait to take it off. I don’t envy anyone who has to wear one for most of their working day in the slightest!
Bikers face-off against hikers at Thursday’s community forum on mountain bike trails on Mt Canobolas. Orange Council will receive an interim report on a $500,000 environmental assessment on allowing mountain-bike tracks for Mt Canobolas with bikeriding groups for the proposal and environmentalists against. Public forums are the future of community consultation — although Orange Council faces a “shellacking” every-time they hold one — Mayor Reg Kidd said. However, there is no justification for mountain bike trails on the sub-alpine 1400-metre Mount, the Canobolas Conservation Alliance believes.
• Dangers of quad bikes were again highlighted by the tumble taken by our beloved Mayor on his property last weekend. “It was long grass, I rolled the quad-bike and ended up in the ditch; I’ve got a sore hip, I’m stiff all over, and it took off some bark as well,” Cr Kidd explained. The news was not all bad though, the local government doyen did get in some good quality down-time while recuperating: “With the injuries, I spent much of the weekend reading, so I read Newswatch from front to back; twice!” he said.

• The rather-dilapidated Cowra Showground is the setting for a State Memorial Service for former Deputy Premier — and the man often credited with bringing the Ag Department (now DPI) to Orange — Ian Armstrong. The State Memorial will be held at 11am on Monday, February 22 at Cowra Showground Pavilion with members of the public having to register their interest. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, limited seating is available and any available seating will be allocated in order of registered interest. Go to: rsvp2-protocol@dpc.nsw.gov.au A good roll-up of former Parliamentary colleagues and local National Party dignitaries are expected at the event for the 25-year political veteran who died in late December.
