Mental health support an in-demand career as more people seek help — STEPH ALLEN —

Mental health support, including psychologists, is one of the 20 most indemand careers in Australia this year, with employment for psychologists projected to grow by 22 per cent from 2022 to 2025.

Orange-based clinical psychologist Peter Warren said there is definitely a growing demand for psychology services within the Central West.

“Psychologists in our region are employed in public hospitals, community health centres, schools, criminal justice, community services and private practice clinics,” he said.

“Many of these organisations are keen to attract psychologists who want to work and stay in the country.

“And these organisations are especially keen to ensure a rural psychology workforce for the future where it is widely expected that psychologists will be in demand, '' he added.

Most of the increasing employment for psychologists will be within clinical psychology, said Mr Warren, but this is being driven by the increasing awareness of mental health in our community and the

willingness of people to seek help.

“Psychologists also need strong analytical skills and the willingness to test what they do against evidence.”

“Psychologists are working in virtually any area of work involving people: education, organisational development, human resource management, sports, criminal justice, health, child development and scientific research.”

Mr Warren, who became a psychologist 30 years ago, was drawn to the career due to his interest in talking with people, his desire to make a difference in people’s lives, and wanting to understand human behaviour and the mind.

“It is always interesting. When you are able to make a difference in people’s lives it is extremely rewarding because the difference you make is often life-changing.
