WELLBEING WORDS BY ZANNA MUNRO
YOU DESERVE TO BE HAPPY! Mental illnesses are becoming more prevalent in today’s society. Did you know that the World Health Organisation (WHO) rates depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide! Approximately 350 million worldwide are affected by depression. Let’s work together to try and change that statistic!
A
s a nutritionist, I know first-hand what a gigantic impact nutrition plays on the way we feel physically and mentally. Mother Nature’s first answer for mood elevation is to nourish our body with well-balanced meals from high quality food sources. When it comes to boosting mood with food, one of the key factors that must be considered is consuming foods that support neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are your brains “messengers” and control many things including mood, energy levels, appetitive and other functions in our body. Neurotransmitters are significantly influenced by what

we do or don’t eat! One of the primary causes of low neurotransmitters is nutritional deficiency. Your brain makes these important signalling chemicals from the amino acids you ingest through your food. This week I want to share with you some information about how you can increase these amino acids in your diet, provide you with a delicious recipe and encourage each other, so we can help to reduce the WHO statistic on the huge number of people suffering from depression. Twenty amino acids are needed to sustain our lives. Of these we can produce just 10, the rest we need to get from our
diet! Because it’s essential that our body has these, they are known as ‘essential amino acids’. These 10 essential amino acids are – arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. The brain uses the amino acid tryptophan to make the neurotransmitters serotonin, melatonin, tryptamine, and indoleanine, which are antidepressants regulate blood sugar and also blood pressure. When we are talking about boosting mood, tryptophan stands out for me and is such a vital essential amino acid that we must include in our diet.
Tryptophan is also necessary for the production of niacin, a B vitamin involved in the manufacture of nerves. B Vitamins also play a crucial role when it comes to our stress response, energy levels and boosting our mood. Some food sources of tryptophan include cheese, chicken, eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and turkey. This week I want to share with you a recipe that incorporates three of these food sources and is one that I hope you will enjoy. Eat well, live well, be well.

Real estate agents advise what to spend on before selling, to maximise returns What’s crucial, what’s costeffective, and when it’s OK to stop When it comes to selling your home, the age-old tale about spending money to make money rings true. But, it can be difficult to know what really adds value to help fetch the best price. Matt McCann, CEO of LocalAgentFinder (localagentfinder.com.au), says: “One of the most common questions vendors ask agents is which areas of their home or the sales process they should invest in, if they are putting their house on the market. When preparing a house for sale, a seller needs to be smart with how they spend their money and there are plenty of ways sellers can attract buyers without doing an entire remodel.” Below are 9 tips on how to maximise the sale price before selling – with insights from leading LocalAgentFinder agents: What’s crucial 1. Kitchen improvements. A kitchen can make or break a property’s sale. Sellers should consider replacing old appliances with newer ones, but
it’s important to look at the overall condition of drawers and cupboards. According to LocalAgentFinder agent Joseph Vella, “The kitchen is a crucial area when preparing a home for sale. Vendors should aim to make kitchens as contemporary as possible with new appliances. Re-covering old cupboards, benchtops and splashbacks can also make a significant difference.” 2. General repairs and maintenance. Fixing any visible flaws with the property will make it more attractive to buyers, who are usually looking for something ‘move in ready’. While doing an appraisal, a good real estate agent can spot common issues that may need repair. “Sellers should target areas that building inspectors look for and correct any problems with subfloor drainage that may welcome termites, fix leaking shower recesses, clear the floor space under the house, and clean gutters. Cosmetically, the garden, fresh paint and a neat and tidy house are important,” says Joseph Vella.
3. Advertising and marketing. The general rule is that approximately one per cent of the anticipated sale price should be spent on marketing. A good agent will talk through possible strategies, and it should start with professional photography. “The first open home with the property is the online listing, so it’s imperative that the property presents at its best online to attract buyers to the open for inspection,” says LocalAgentFinder agent Andrew Oostenbrink. 4. Basic landscaping. A well-maintained garden will leave a lasting impression, but there’s no need to go overboard as the costs might not be recouped. Studies show that 78 per cent of Australians would prefer to live in a home that has a garden and greenery[1], so buyers should lay new lawn over dead patches, mulch garden beds and plant fresh flowers. A well-maintained pool is also a great selling point. Seek a professional to give the tiles a scrub, clean the baskets and the skimmer, check the pump is working and the water
balance is correct. What’s cost effective 5. Style outdoor areas. Give outdoor areas some attention by purchasing new cushions for an outdoor furniture set – they are extremely affordable and can breathe fresh new life into the area and make the outdoors feel liveable. 6. Bring in the green. Indoor plants are affordable, easy to maintain and will brighten up a living room or bathroom – they can also be taken to the seller’s new home. Succulents, mother-in-law’s tongue, philodendron and orchards are all very popular and can fill nooks that might be difficult to furnish. 7. Use lighting to create atmosphere. When showing off a property, it’s a good idea to have all the lights turned on to emphasise how bright the home can be. Replace expired light bulbs with new, energy efficient ones, or bulbs with higher wattage.

8. Enlist the help of a professional cleaner. A simple and inexpensive way to instantly maximise value and bring a property back to life is to give it a professional clean. Carpets should be steamed, bathroom and kitchens polished, windows wiped, and floors and walls washed. Exteriors may need to be pressure cleaned. When it’s OK to stop 9. Renovations. Sellers can over-capitalise on renovations; a bathroom can be updated at a reasonable cost, however, extending a living area or adding on another level may not be worth it. “Money needs to be spent on the right areas that add value to the end price. Vendors should work with their agents to make sure that money is spent in areas that make the maximum difference. The suburb, the houses around the home for sale, and the buyer’s expectations in the area, will determine what a seller should or shouldn’t do,” says Joseph Vella.

PEOPLE WORDS BY TOBY BETTS
LOCAL LEGENDS
BRUCE BUCHANAN Anyone paying attention to local going-ons will know that the Orange Theatre Company’s production of the smash-hit Broadway show Wicked has come and gone. While we were all enjoying that, I was convinced that it would be timely to take a look behind the scenes and interview Wicked’s production director, Bruce Buchanan, a long-time member of the OTC and the director of over a dozen different productions here in Orange, such as Annie, Chicago, CATS, Guys and Dolls and A Few Good Men. How did you first get involved in theatre production? “My parents actually met in the world of theatre so I’ve been involved in it all my life. I’ve literally been pushed to rehearsals in a pram and have watched them from a very young age. Before I came to Orange I lived in Parkes and was involved in the Parkes Musical and Dramatical society for 3 years. Afterwards I moved to Bathurst and worked there for 19 years and became a lifetime member of the Bathurst Players. Of course, prior to that I was involved in the theatrical productions in my schools and… well, I’ve been doing theatre all my life basically.” How long have you been working with the Orange Theatre Company? “This will be my 19th year I’ve been with the Theatre Company 38
MAY 25–31, 2017
in various positions, I’ve been on the management committee for 15 years, I’ve been the president of the company for a number of years, I’ve been directing productions for 16 years, I’ve been involved in stage work, whether it be backstage, scenery, lighting… you name it, I’ve probably done it. ” What is your role in the production of Wicked? “I’m the production director, so as director it’s your vision as to how you want the show to look and play out, as well as working with people like the choreographer, the costume coordinator and the musical director to try and bring your creative vision for the show to life. Organising everything that’s happening can take an incredibly long time too. Although the show was playing from May 15th - 21st, it was in pre-production since
MEET TOBY
At just 19, Toby Jack Betts is one of OC Life’s younger contributors… “I enjoy writing, video games, anime and watching weird and stupid stuff on the internet. “I enjoy doing the Local Legends segment because I get to meet interesting people who do neat and creative things that they’re passionate about.
mid-last year. One big thing about this production is that we learned that Miranda and Illawarra’s theatre companies were also doing their own productions of Wicked, so the three companies decided to basically save production costs by all sharing props, scenery, and costumes with each other and each theatre company putting on their production in turn, Miranda went first, we were second and Illawarra will be having their production of Wicked sometime in August.”
What do you think of the acting and musical talent Orange has to offer? “I’m honestly blown away every single time I do a show. Someone will always come out of the woodwork and show off something amazing that you wouldn’t expect, and the level of talent and range from the actors and musicians is astonishing, whether it was fostered by minor productions in schools or in places like the Acting Society or the Conservatorium of Music, it’s just incredible.”
What are some of the difficulties you have with directing? “The hardest part I think with directing is getting everybody to share your vision. You’ve got this picture in your mind but it isn’t as tangible to other people as it is to you. This is especially true for example, when you’re rehearsing in a regular old hall and the actor playing the Wicked Witch of the West is just standing on a chair pretending to fly with no costume or music or anything. Once the stage and set come together is when everyone else starts to see what you see and go with the flow.”
What production would you like the theatre company to do next? “Oh wow. If you were to ask me 12 months ago I’d say Wicked, since it’s only just became not exclusive to metropolitan areas, and it’s something that Orange has never done before. We have doctors, teachers, business owners, students, migrants, all these different people in Orange with different careers and from different backgrounds all coming together to put on a show. It really is something.”
What has been your favourite production to work on? “Well, certainly this one. Wicked has been incredibly exciting to work on it so far, but before that, I really enjoyed doing Dusty: The Original Pop Diva since it was set in the era of music I grew up with and could relate to. In that year we also formed a partnership with the Orange High School stage band, and we had a great affinity with the music director and the kids up there so I feel like we put on a better show because of it.”
Bruce is certainly unique in terms of those I’ve interviewed, and the sheer passion and love for his work I see from him is likely rivalled by no other. He mentioned to me about how people have the option of seeing these productions in the big city, so rural productions need to show off a level of quality and professionalism equal to that of places like Sydney to show people they’re getting their money’s worth. The man really does take pride in his work, with major bombast and splendid grandeur. Bravo Bruce, Bravo!

The cost of raising a child is around $400,000 each between the ages of birth and finishing tertiary education
O
ne of the starting points I use when looking at an individual, a family or even a business is their level of knowledge when it comes to funds or income coming in and expenses going out. Businesses will discuss their ‘breakeven point’, which is the amount that needs to come in, usually each month, to ensure they meet all obligations of the business. One of the first steps to understanding an individual or a family’s ‘break-even point’ is by doing a budget. It is a good way to
see what they are currently earning, where they are spending their money, and how much they have left. By assigning yourself and other household members the task of completing a budget you can begin to understand and take control of your total inflows and outflows and surplus. Within the budget, you need to review what you are spending your money on in the areas of housing, fuel and power, food and drinks, clothing and footwear, medical and health expenses, alcohol, transport,
and recreation. You may find that some of your expenses are fixed, whereas others are variable or discretionary and the way you spend money will be influenced by your own personality and your lifestyle. Discretionary spend on things like take-away, nights out, concerts, sporting events, presents, Christmas and various other outings can build up and they need to be factored into your budget to complete the entire picture of your spending. Another budget you will need to
organise is a budget if you were to pass away or are unable to work, you will need to budget for future expenses and the best way to do this is through getting an insurance strategy that will ensure your family is not left with a terrible burden. The cost of raising a child is around $400,000 each between the ages of birth and finishing tertiary education, if the child attends public education. If the child goes to private schooling the costs are added straight on to top of these costs and could be as high as $800,000 to $1 Million per child.
If you do not make budget measures for future expenditure, such as raising your children, future debt costs and all other expenses associated with life, you, your family and even your business, will suffer. Challenge yourself, your family and even your business to create a plan and take action towards the future financial situation, go beyond ‘breakeven’ and look for ways to enjoy your life even more. See you soon,
Rose

LAME JOKES You want to hear a pizza joke? Never mind, it’s pretty cheesy. What is the difference between ignorance and apathy? I don’t know, and I don’t care. Dry erase boards are remarkable.
Protecting you and your assets with over 30 years of experience!
Dwarfs and midgets have very little in common. How do you make Holy water? Boil the hell out of it. Why was six afraid of seven? Because seven was a well known six offender. What time is it when you have to go to the dentist? Toothhurtie. My friend recently got crushed by a pile of books, but he’s only got his shelf to blame. Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like banana.

SMITH & JONES
IN REVIEW WORDS BY PAT COOMEY
DARK GIVES WAY Abby Smith and Sophie Jones are a duo based in Bathurst, who have been working together for the past couple of years, building a solid following across the central west of NSW. The fruits of this musical union have been realised with the release of their debut album “Dark Gives Way”.
T
hese two ladies have very distinct voices that blend country and soul with sways of blue tones that fall between jazz and the blues. Their vocal sound coupled with tasteful arrangements of their acoustic guitar (Sophie) and classic keyboards( Abby) padded out with some solid lead guitar from Matt Ferry, give the 12 original songs written by Abby Smith a stunning down home feel. The album swings from the catchy

opener “Baby Blue” and this is immediately followed by ”Your Achin’ Heart”, which in another time would have been a massive radio hit. This high standard doesn’t miss a beat through every track including the aching closer “Hole Through Heaven”. The songs are loaded with melodies that will get deep inside your head. They slip effortlessly between styles from country, soul, and blues, whilst the songs themes deal with love, loss, murder, God and what life in the modern world can be like for a lady, which reveal a maturity and perspectives on life that are beyond the young age of the writer. These ladies draw from a deep well of influences and have a great love of music which oozes out in every note played and sung on this album. It stands up to repeated playing, with each spin revealing more of its beauty and charm. This album serves notices that Smith and Jones are a musical force that have the goods to storm the big stages of Australia and the world. Take your chance to see them while you can. Smith and Jones will be performing in Orange on:Sunday 28th May @ Ex Services Club. Dark Give Way can be purchased from www.smithandjones.net.

An outstanding documentary feature, Ella tells the story of Ella Havelka, the first Indigenous dancer to be invited to the Australian Ballet. This film has local interest to Orange since Ella’s humble beginnings in dance were at the Dubbo Ballet Studio – with the help of scholarships and handme-down tutus. Ella spent four years training at The Australian Ballet School in Melbourne before joining Bangarra in 2009, a Sydney-based Indigenous dance company. There, she not only learnt the rigours of contemporary dance, but began a powerful and moving journey of self-discovery into her indigenous heritage. It was not until 2012 when 42

Bangarra dance company did a joint performance with The Australian Ballet that the call of ballet was reignited with Ella. She accepted the offer to join the Australian Ballet, a shift back to being ‘en pointe’ after four years of barefoot contemporary dancing. Woven throughout the film is a moving personal journey back to Ella’s roots, guided by her mother. She explores her childhood, having never known her father, even though he lived in the same town. However, after his death Ella was given a scrapbook of clippings that he had kept, documenting her whole career. A special screening of Ella will be held at 6:30 Monday 12 June at Odeon 5 Cinemas.
In a wonderful collaboration, Orange Male Voice Choir ‘Friendship in Song’ concert will feature the Wagga City Rugby Male Voice Choir, the Orange based ladies Cantar Community Choir, the Orange High School Man Choir and guest flautist Jacquie Shields. Notable Australian composer Paul Jarman will be the special guest conductor. Those who attended the OMVC’s 90th Anniversary last November will no doubt recall the energy and drive with which Paul conducted the massed male voice choir in the Orange Civic Theatre. A degree of poignancy is inescapable, as it will be the final major concert appearance for
OMVC’s treasured accompanist of 28 years, Beverley Glover, who is returning soon to her native New Zealand. Beverly said, “I’ve taken so much joy and pleasure from working and playing with 5 different conductors over the last 28 years. I’m going to miss everyone dreadfully. We just won first prize in the open choral section of the Cowra Eisteddfod, so it’s lovely to go away on a win!” ‘Friendship in Song’ will be performed at St. Mary’s Church, Park Street, Orange, Saturday 17 June, 7.30 pm. Tickets are available at Collins Bookstore, $25 (concession $20). A great occasion is guaranteed.
