I witnessed what I can only describe as the act of a reluctant hero the other day on a tube train in London: a young boy listening to music, seemingly in a world of his own, was the only one to notice an older lady faint just across from him! Looking embarrassed, he got up and helped her up and back onto her seat. I went over, helped and then congratulated him for helping. He looked at me, embarrassed but pleased. That boy reminded me of the first character in this YP’s, Elijah. He ended up a bit of a reluctant hero – championing God’s cause, pretty much alone – but with amazing results. And he did a brilliant job too in helping to teach and prepare Elisha, who also features inside, to follow up what he started. I guess maybe some of Jesus’ disciples, about whom we read in Acts, could also be described as reluctant heroes. But again, think of the amazing things they did, especially with the Holy Spirit’s help! So, this YP’s is for all you ‘reluctant heroes’ out there! Ask God to help you be brave enough to do the things that will change other people’s lives. It may be helping an old lady, saying a kind word, or praying for someone. Who knows – but in God’s eyes, you’ll be a hero!
