Case Western Reserve University Department of Physical Education & Athletics Annual Report

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS DEAR SPARTAN FAMILY,

I am proud to provide you with the Department of Physical Education and Athletics Annual Report. This report recaps one of the most successful years in recent Spartan history. We are proud of our talented students and student athletes participating in our programs from the long list of dynamic physical education classes, intramurals, club sports and varsity competition. That talent extends to the classroom as well. As you will note in this report, numerous AllAcademic accolades follow each season for our Spartans. In addition to being outstanding in the classroom, our student-athletes engage in community outreach activities both here and abroad. They embody the true meaning of a Division III student athlete.

AMY With the help of our generous donors and university support, we continue to provide our students BACKUS with a first class experience and facilities. The new M. Frank and Margaret Dormiter Rudy Athletic Endowment provides all of our 500 student athletes with new Nike uniforms and shoes into the future. Just as Mr. Rudy’s technology of the Air Sole changed the design of athletic footwear, this generous endowment changes the landscape of Spartan Athletics forever. Facility enhancements include the men’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer locker rooms, the cleaning and painting of the Bill Sudeck outdoor track, batting cage nets at Nobby’s Ballpark and Mather park, new Swimming & Diving record board and upgraded warm up room on the pool deck, new soccer goals for DiSanto Field, and carbon volleyball poles for Horsburgh Gymnasium. The CWRU Day of Giving on June 12th, proved to be a spectacular success. Our donors provided the department with the top prize in the university’s day of giving. We beat our goal by 384% with 707 donors, which represented 27% of the total donors to the university on that day. Thank you for making this a remarkable day! Over 60 student athlete leaders continue to learn beyond the lines by participating in the department’s leadership academy called “The Program”, meeting several times throughout the year to learn team leadership skills and gain leadership knowledge from guest speakers from the corporate world, human resources and education. We hope you enjoy reviewing the best and brightest moments from the 2017-18 Spartan Athletic year. Your support as a volunteer, sponsor, friend, alumni or parent is so appreciated by our entire department. On behalf of our students and staff, thank you for all you do for the proud Spartans!

Sincerely,

Amy Backus Director of Athletics Chair of Physical Education Case Western Reserve University

MISSION STATEMENT (Revised January 2017)

ABOUT US

The Department of Physical Education and Athletics seeks excellence for the diverse community of students, faculty, and staff of Case Western Reserve University by providing the professional and community resources and support necessary to develop and maximize opportunities for engagement, learning, and respectful competition at the highest level. The department offers a broad range of athletics activities, including varsity teams, club sports, intramurals, and physical education courses, which support the educational mission of this prestigious research university to improve and enrich lives through active, creative, and continuous learning.

FROM THE DIRECTOR: A STATE OF THE DEPARTMENT MESSAGE

The Department of Physical Education and Athletics is committed to serving all students in our programs from varsity, club, recreational, intramurals and physical education. Providing a challenging, quality athletic experience for students seeking a rigorous academic agenda is not a mutually exclusive endeavor. We currently support 19 varsity sports competing in the most competitive conference in Division III in the country, the University Athletic Association. This association is comprised of some of the top research universities in the country. Student athletes on the varsity level comprise almost 10% of the undergraduate population (470). The department currently recognizes 16 club sport programs serving over 700 students competing regionally and nationally as well as Intramural activities with 1,500 unique participants this past academic year. Physical education classes include courses ranging from yoga to basketball and rock climbing providing fitness and lifetime sport instruction. Included in the physical education department is a recognized minor in sports medicine. Students enrolled in Fall 17 courses numbered 2113 with Spring 17 course enrollment of 2093 for 4,210 undergraduates engaged in our department through physical education classes. Facility and student experience improvements continued to take priority in 2017-18. We will continue to fundraise for facility developments and enhancements for Wyant Phase II, Adelbert Gymnasium, Van Horn Field and a tennis clubhouse. An ongoing campaign for several locker room enhancements including football are up and running. Resource development strategies to increase financial contributions in the form of excellence campaigns, endowment creations, corporate sponsorships and stronger alumni affiliations will be important for creating a sustainable competitive advantage in the UAA and beyond. Our outreach efforts through social media outlets, with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, including the department sponsored feeds helps to keep our supporters up to date. Each varsity sport and most club sports also have their own social media platforms helping to increasing our exposure. Most varsity programs provide updates to friends lists through weekly emails and quarterly newsletters. Visits to our athletics.case.edu website are the second most visited sites trailing only behind case.edu, the main portal to the university. Preparing students for the future is a baseline concept on all of our teams. We build winners and develop character through the many programs and services we offer students. Character development occurs organically from participation on a team where selfless devotion, sacrifice and time management skills come into play each day. Formally we address leadership skills in our student athlete advisory council (CASA), The Program; our student leadership academy, Club Sport Council, ROTC, student staff development and mentoring discussions with alumni as well as career networking. A strong athletic program can help to galvanize a community, provide enthusiasm and pride in the university. It is an opportunity to value and honor other’s successes while providing unparalleled growth of the individuals involved. We currently emphasize and advocate for the continued provisions of a broad based and comprehensive program of athletic opportunities to all students who seek excellence in their chosen passions whether on the varsity level team, club sports or life-long physical education pursuits.
