Case Western Reserve University Department of Physical Education & Athletics Annual Report
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS DEAR SPARTAN FAMILY,
Welcome to our first annual report of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics. As I reflect on the past year, I am once again so proud of our talented students and student athletes participating in our programs from the long list of dynamic physical education classes, intramurals, club sports and varsity competition. That talent extends to the classroom as well. As you will note in this report, numerous All-Academic accolades follow each season for our Spartans. In addition to being outstanding in the classroom, our student-athletes engage in community outreach activities both here and abroad. They embody the true meaning of a Division III student athlete.
AMY With the help of our generous donors and university support, we embarked on several ambitious BACKUS facility upgrades. State of the art artificial surfaces to DiSanto Field, Nobby’s Ballpark and Mather Park will put CWRU on the map as having some of the finest competitive venues in the country in our division. Not only will the surfaces prove to be quite beneficial for our spring sports schedule, DiSanto Field serves as a campus wide venue to our competitive club sport and recreational scene. We will engage in a new strategic plan over the course of the next three years in concert with the themes of the Division of Student Affairs. Our strategic plan thus will embrace the areas of unity, preparedness and wellness. The department is uniquely positioned to prepare our students in all of these areas on a daily basis. An exciting new student development initiative began this year with “The Program”, our student athlete leadership academy. Over 60 student athlete leaders participated in the academy meeting several time throughout the year to learn team leadership skills and gain leadership knowledge from guest speakers from the corporate world, human resources and education. With the help of a representative committee of alumni, students and staff, our department rewrote our mission statement and created a new tag line for the department to better reflect the future direction of our department. Using the letters from our university, the new tagline helps to define us: Compete Win Respect Unite. We hope you enjoy reviewing the best and brightest moments from the 2016-17 Spartan Athletic year.Your support in words, attendance, as a volunteer, sponsor and friend are so appreciated by our entire department. On behalf of our students and staff, thank you for all you do for the proud Spartans! Sincerely,
Amy Backus Director of Athletics Chair of Physical Education Case Western Reserve University

MISSION STATEMENT (Revised January 2017)
ABOUT US
The Department of Physical Education and Athletics seeks excellence for the diverse community of students, faculty, and staff of Case Western Reserve University by providing the professional and community resources and support necessary to develop and maximize opportunities for engagement, learning, and respectful competition at the highest level. The department offers a broad range of athletics activities, including varsity teams, club sports, intramurals, and physical education courses, which support the educational mission of this prestigious research university to improve and enrich lives through active, creative, and continuous learning.
STATE OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Physical Education and Athletics is committed to serving all students in our programs from varsity, club, recreational, intramurals and physical education. Providing a challenging, quality athletic experience for students seeking a rigorous academic agenda is not a mutually exclusive endeavor. We currently support 19 varsity sports competing in the most competitive conference in Division III in the country, the University Athletic Association. This association is comprised of some of the top research universities in the country. Student athletes on the varsity level comprise 10% of the undergraduate population (452). The department currently recognizes 17 club sport programs serving 890 students competing regionally and nationally as well as Intramural activities with 1,531 unique participants this past academic year. Physical education classes include courses ranging from yoga to basketball and rock climbing providing fitness and lifetime sport instruction. Included in the physical education department is a recognized minor in sports medicine. Students enrolled in Fall 2016 courses numbered 1,883 with Spring 2017 course enrollment of 2,440 for a total of 4,323 undergraduates engaged in our department through physical education classes. Facility improvements continued to take priority in 2016-17. The status of our main competition areas will be in excellent shape for the next ten years as new surfaces will be complete in 2017 for the Veale Convocation Center, DiSanto Field, Nobby’s Ballpark and Mather Park. We will continue to fundraise for facility developments and enhancements for Wyant Phase II, Adelbert Gymnasium, and a tennis clubhouse. Additional enhancements in locker room spaces took shape in 2016-17 and will continue into the future. Resource development strategies to increase financial contributions in the form of excellence campaigns, endowment creations and corporate sponsorships and stronger alumni affiliations will be important for creating a sustainable competitive advantage in the UAA and beyond. Our outreach efforts through social media outlets, with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, including the department sponsored feeds as well as each varsity sport and most club sports increasing our exposure through social media. Most varsity programs outline updates to friends lists through weekly emails and quarterly newsletters. Visits to our athletics.case.edu website are the second most visited sites trailing only behind case.edu, the main portal to the university. Preparing students for the future is a baseline concept on all of our teams. We build winners and develop character through the many programs and services we offer students. Character development occurs organically from participation on a team where selfless devotion, sacrifice and time management skills come into play each day. Formally we address leadership skills in our student athlete advisory council (CASA), The Program; our student leadership academy, Sport Club Council, ROTC, student staff development and mentoring discussions with alumni as well as career networking. A strong athletic program can help to galvanize a community, provide enthusiasm and pride in the university. It is an opportunity to value and honor other’s successes while providing unparalleled growth of the individuals involved. We currently emphasize and advocate for the continued provisions of a broad based and comprehensive program of athletic opportunities to all students who seek excellence in their chosen passions whether on the varsity level team, club sports or life-long physical education pursuits.

2016-17 FACILITY RENTALS
The removal of the old turf and installation of new turf at DiSanto Field began in May 2017, with a scheduled completion date of June 22. The new turf will be FieldTurf’s Revolution 360 fiber (the same installed at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia and Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts) with an EcoSense EPDM fill.
Nobby’s Ballpark is undergoing a transformation from a grass and dirt infield to one consisting of Astroturf’s Diamond Series 3Di system. The infield grass will be a slit film fiber, and the entire field will be infilled with a mixture of sand and EPDM rubber. The Series Diamond 3Di system is the most widely used synthetic turf system used in collegiate baseball today.

INVESTING IN CWRU ATHLETICS
Donations to CWRU Athletics have a great impact, enabling the department to provide a vital health and wellness dimension for the Case Western Reserve campus. Encompassing varsity athletics, club sports, intramurals, and the physical education curriculum, along with recreation/health and wellness activities, CWRU Athletics serves students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community. University funding enables the Athletic Department to operate, while donations allow it to excel. External funding supplements CWRU budgetary allocations, making it possible for the department to augment facilities, enhance programs, and take advantage of opportunities. The 2016-17 fiscal year saw 587 donations to the CWRU Athletic Department totaling $1,211,634, with gifts to capital campaigns, special projects, and endowments, along with expendable funding to advance programs to the next level. The list below includes donations made to the CWRU Athletic Department during the past fiscal year (July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017) of cash, securities, retirement plans, matching gifts, and bequests. The list includes gifts to capital initiatives, specific varsity sports, individual club sports, intramurals, physical education classes, and membership dues to the Spartan Club. Major gifts include, but are not limited to: the Wyant Athletic and Wellness Center, synthetic turf for baseball and softball fields, new locker rooms for men’s and women’s soccer, crew club endowment, and a will commitment to the Spartan Club. We thank you for investing in CWRU Athletics. If there are questions concerning CWRU Athletics support, or if you wish to inquire about making a donation or planned gift, please contact me at 216-368-3992 or gary.pillar@case.edu.
