Tips for a Greener Lawn

Start by removing moss and weeds from your lawn using moss and weed killer formulas available at your local hardware store. You can also combine 2 oz. dish soap with 1 gallon of water and spray it on mossy areas. For weeds, combine 1 gallon white vinegar, 1 cup salt and 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap and spray on weeds during the sunniest time of day.

It’s important to thatch the lawn to remove dead moss and weeds

Mow high and frequently – the higher the lawn the healthier

Keep your mower blades sharp to ensure a clean cut

Change your mowing patterns each time you cut the grass to reduce wear patterns and avoid forming ruts

Aerate your lawn when moist (wait a couple days after rain) using a machine or hand tool. Follow up with a layer of fertilizer or compost to improve soil conditions. This is also a good time to apply seed or reseed sparse lawns

Install an irrigation system so you are not over or under watering or purchase a hose timer to regulate watering.

Water early in the morning (not during the heat of the day or your lawn will burn. Evening watering leaves water on the grass blades for longer which can lead to some diseases)

Water less often but for prolonged periods. If you find it difficult to push a six-inch screwdriver into your lawn, water more frequently.

Fertilize your lawn on a regular schedule, once in spring, after you aerate and once in fall, before the lawn goes dormant for the winter.

Train your dog to do their business in one area of the yard preferably a gravel or mulched area
