Communications Workers’ Union Communications Workers’ Union Value Added Benefits Booklet
YOUR UNION YOUR VOICE
retired members’ benefits
There are a range of special discounts which are available to you as a retired member of the CWU. All you need to do is quote your membership number to avail of them. The Union has arranged discounts on things as essential as insurance cover for your car, home and holidays. Enclosed in this booklet are details of the benefits available to you if you join the Retired Members’ Section: 1.
By joining the Retired Members’ Section of the CWU you will have a voice in relation to your pension and a say in future decisions regarding your pension;
2.
The membership fee for retired members shall be €1.00 per week by Deduction at Source; or €4.16 per month by Direct Debit; or €50.00 per annum by cheque/ postal order/ cash;
3.
The Union magazine “Connect”, which is published 4 times a year, can keep you updated on what is taking place in your industry, on industrial relations events, not to mention special discounts and services available to you as a retired member. All retired members shall receive a copy of the Connect magazine posted directly to their home address;
4.
The next of kin of a retired member may be entitled to a doubling of the Mortality Grant to €1,270 on the death of a retired member;
5.
Applications for financial assistance from the fund in such cases are considered on their merits by the Management Committee and grants are made in certain limited circumstances, subject to the sanction of the NEC. The NEC, through the Finance Sub-Committee, shall set aside monies to provide financial assistance for retired members in distress;
6.
Retired members are also entitled to avail of legal aid. This scheme, which is funded from the central funds of the Union, provides assistance to retired members in certain circumstances and subject to certain conditions in relation to: Offences under the Road Traffic Acts; Compensation Claims; Inquests; Wills; and certain other legal advice. The first consultation with the Union solicitor is free and any subsequent meetings are at the expense of the individual;
7.
The existing personal accident cover, which the Union takes out for all members, will be extended to retired members until the age of 80. All retired members are covered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, anywhere in the world. The only exclusions are injuries consequent upon war, whether declared or undeclared, intentional self-inflicted injury including suicide or attempted suicide, aerial flight other than as a passenger, sickness or disease;
8.
We have also secured an extension of our private medical health scheme with Aviva Insurance to retired members. Details of these insurance schemes are available herein and on the website. Members should directly contact FM Downes & Co. on 01 855 6666 (www.fmdownes.com) and Halligan Insurances on 01 879 7100 (www.halligan.ie) if they wish to avail of this range of services.
Given that this is a new departure for the Union, the above list is obviously not exhaustive and it is the intention of the NEC to agree a process that will allow the Union to assist our Retired Members’ Sections to develop policy and to become a voice for those members. If you would like to join the Retired Members’ Section of the CWU please return the enclosed forms to: Communications Workers’ Union, William Norton House, 575-577 North Circular Road, Dublin 1 PLEASE NOTE YOU CAN ONLY BE A MEMBER OF THE RETIRED MEMBERS’ SECTION IF YOU ARE NO LONGER IN EMPLOYMENT 3
