Welcome current and future Pulse Magazine
Readers! Much of my thoughts the past month have been dedicated to how I can make Pulse bigger and better. Trying to figure out the minds of college students 18 to 25 years old (despite that I fall in the dead middle of that category) was not as simple as I thought it would be. What I hear most often about Pulse is that well, no one knows what it is. I’m here to change that perception. For those of you who are wondering more about this “new” publication, Pulse (also known as Convergent Publishing, COM 446) was started in 2008. No way, 2008! Yup, you read it right! The goal of Pulse Magazine is to combine journalistic skills with artistic elements of design and the internet so it’s accessible to not only Ellensburg but college students anywhere. Fall 2010 marked the re-birth of Pulse when the format changed to an online flip-through style magazine. Putting together a publication like this is no piece of cake. Students write their own articles, create their own layouts and most take their own pictures. So with the click of a mouse and in the comforts of your own home (or school awaiting for your next class) you can be taken through a virtual journey of advice, learn to do something new, get ideas for how to celebrate Valentine’s Day or be reminded to kick up the motivation on that New Year’s resolution before Spring Break.

Blowout
This year promises to be anoth-
er great year for video game fans. Showing no sign of slowing down the video game industry looks set to get even bigger after earning $25 billion in profits worldwide last year. Video games are rapidly gaining on other forms of entertainment like movies and music and have been the fastest growing media sector for some time now. The 2011 release schedule has no shortage of blockbuster games and it feels like video game fans are going to need to start saving their cash for the flood of releases that are on deck.

Summer Each summer thousands of video game industry professionals flock to The Los Angeles Convention Center in to participate in the industry’s largest trade show. This year the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) will be held June 7-9. While E3 is only open to video game journalists and retailers, fans can expect a treasure trove of information and media on the games that they’re looking forward to. Some of the biggest names in gaming will be in attendance including Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Activision, EA, Sega, and Ubisoft. E3 is the best chance for companies like these to build up hype and anticipation for their big releases. This year expect to hear a lot about 3D gaming technology and possibly even an announcement of the PlayStation Phone. Mobile gaming is gaining momentum and most video game companies have something in the works for this new gaming format.

Autumn Video game releases tend to pick up
right after summer. This fall looks to continue that trend is shaping up to be one of the best in video game history. Shooter fans can look forward to the latest release from id Software, Rage, in September. Rage takes place in a huge, post-apocalyptic setting that will provide players with a wealth of opportunities to explore. The game also features racing and vehicular combat which should give gamers a refreshing change of pace from the numerous gunfights that they will surely be a part of. Rage will come out on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. PS3 gamers are eagerly anticipating sequels for two of the console’s biggest exclusives. Resistance 3 is a sci-fi shooter that tasks players with ending a brutal alien occupation on Earth. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is set to deliver the same explosive thrills that made its predecessor a critical darling. Resistance 3 is set to release in September while Uncharted 3 will come out right at the beginning of the holiday season in November.

Rest of the Year Video games are notorious for running into delays so
many publishers tend to only provide an ETA for many popular games to avoid backlash from angry fanboys. Xbox 360 fans can look forward to the highly anticipated finale to the Gears of War saga expected to release later this fall. In a related note Microsoft recently announced that on February 15th a $30 bundle that features all of the Gears of War games and expansions will be available for those who haven’t yet chosen to take on the Locust Horde. Photo courtesy of Xbox Comic book fans may also be looking forward to the sequel to 2009’s smash hit Batman: Arkham Asylum. In Batman: Arkham City the Dark Knight won’t be confined to the infamous prison for supervillians and will be using his detective skills throughout the rest of Gotham City to foil the Joker’s most recent plot. A first for the series is the inclusion of a multiplayer component but few details have been released on how it will play as of yet. Arkham City is tentatively scheduled to be released late this year.
Another high-profile game being released this year may have a chance at dethroning the mighty World of Warcraft series as the dominant massively multiplayer online game. Star Wars: The Old Republic is set around 1000 years before the famous movie series and allows players to choose sides in a giant war between the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire. Developer Bioware promises that this game will be more story-driven than other MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games) and will allow players to choose a group of computer characters that they will be able to interact with along with the other real life friends that are playing with them. Star Wars: The Old Republic is currently slated for release on Windows PC sometime in the late summer or early fall. Video game fans have a whole lot to look forward to this year and I have yet to mention other high profile games such as Max Payne 3 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC), L.A. Noire (PS3, Xbox 360), Infamous 2(PS3), or The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii) and Diablo III (PC). Also keep in mind that 2011 will be the year that 3D and motion-based gaming come into their own as all three of the big video game companies continue to push their new technology into the consumer’s homes. The PlayStation Move and Xbox Kinect are both on store shelves and of course the good old Nintendo Wii, which pioneered motion gaming, is still available.

L LOoVvEeIT! VEL (or your girlfriend does)
For those long-term relationships, sorry to tell ya guys but nine times out of ten you’re in a lose-lose situation. If you’ve set the bar high for yourself she’ll be expecting a minimum of what you’ve done the previous year plus a little more (she’ll be horribly disappointed if things don’t go as planned).

To Guys

Romance is NOT just for February 14th!
Most women have been planning our dream Valentine’s Day date from the time they’re 12. We expect large romantic gestures and well-thought out surprises. But why do we stress such romantic involvement on this ONE day of the year? Well the media tells us to: competition and bragging rights with our friends, the need to feel loved and important along with everyone else on Valentine’s Day are some reasons that first come to mind. How can we not feel this pressure? Everywhere you look in the month of February you’ll find hearts, chocolates, roses and an overall pink and red explosion.
Romance without the spending Each relationship is different. However, coming up with an agreement with your love may save you from high expectations on the 14th. For instance, being romantic (and surprising her) more days throughout the year. Why not spend that money you would have spent on one dozen roses on Valentine’s Day instead on a weekend getaway for the two of you? Don’t get me wrong, celebrating Valentine’s Day will still be important to her, but spending time (which can mean a whole lot more than spending money) on something like making a home-made dinner or making a card that shares your feelings for her could bring her to (happy) tears. You know your girl best and she won’t fall for the “agreement plan” above. It’s okay, don’t panic. We know not all guys are skilled planners, so we’ll help you out with some ideas. Check out our advice on page 40!
35
: s l r i G o T
Move Away from “Traditional” Valentine’s Day Celebrations
Don’t falsely pull the low maintenance card Saying you don’t want anything for Valentine’s Day or any surprises, will most likely result in nothing for Valentine’s Day and no surprises. Don’t confuse your guy. He’s not a mind reader and won’t overanalyze your thoughts on Valentine’s Day. Let’s face it, he hates the whole Valentine’s Day pressure and if you tell him you don’t want to celebrate, he’ll be relieved. High Expectations on a Budget For those of us on a budget, let’s put the cost of Valentine’s Day into perspective. Dozen Red Roses: $50, Box of Chocolates: $20, Teddy Bear: $20, Heart Balloon(s): $10, Dinner out on the town: $50 (or more, depending on how fancy of a location he’s taking you to). Simple math says he’s spending at least $150 on all these Valentine’s Day themed items! Talk it out with your man, what else could you guys do together with that $150? Would you rather receive roses throughout the year averaging $10-15 a dozen, when they are actually in season and not hyped up from Valentine’s Day? Why don’t you do-away with the heart-shaped chocolate that (most of the time) you take one bite of and put back in the box. The teddy bear is always a cute idea, but it usually ends up collecting dust on a shelf. What about that cute helium balloon that deflates in a week or two? It ends up in the garbage. In perspective, Valentine’s Day is full of a lot of (excuse me for lack of a better word) stuff. Your relationship means more than just useless “stuff.” If you’re going to celebrate Valentine’s Day, make it about your personal relationship and not about all the must-haves you see for sale in the stores. Plan a role-reversal date Tell your man that you want to be in charge of Valentine’s Day this year. Not only will he be thrilled the pressure of planning perfection is on your shoulders, but you’ll get a chance to show him how much you care. No, we are not suggesting that you buy him roses. How

What your boyfriend would rather do on Valentine’s Day might differ from you. Plan a date and do something he loves! Photo by Britta Dillon
about planning a day that he’ll love? Show him you can relax with him and watch “manly” action movies, order a pizza, buy some beer and play video games with him. If he didn’t already love you, he will now. If you hang out and plan a date for him, he’ll be more likely to plan a thoughtful, “mushy” date for you. Show him that Valentine’s Day or even a Friday “date night” can go both ways. Compromising between what you want to do and what he wants to do is the key. Spend Time with Each Other Life gets busy. If nothing else, on Valentine’s Day you should just be thankful to spend time with the one you love.

It’s not like grade school anymore....when everyone got Valentine’s Day cards and candy.
Iontthis seems like everyone you know is in love, especially February holiday. Every aisle, TV commercial
“I Hate Valentine’s Day” Party
and red heart reminds you the pending doom known as Valentine’s Day. Your feelings range from sadness, to disgust and anger. What options do you have as a Valentine’s Day hater?
Is it cliché? Yes. Do you care? NO! Get together other friends (single or not) who just aren’t interested in celebrating the heart themed holiday. Surrounding yourself with people you love—friends or family—can help you forget about the day.
Spoil Yourself
Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
You work hard, so spoil yourself at the spa. You don’t need a boyfriend to massage your shoulders! However, if you’re looking to get away from the entire Valentine’s Day scene, a spa might be decked out for the occasion. Try not to be nauseated at the couples in for massages as they walk hand-in-hand with goo-goo eyes.
If you’re single on this lovey-dovey holiday then spending time measuring yourself against other supposedly happy, snuggling couples is a waste of time. So save the tears for something important, not wishing you had someone to give you an overpriced box of chocolates. Remember, your relationship status is not your identity.

1.
Dining out. If you didn’t make a reservation last October, your options (single or not) are slim to none. Who wants to eat out with a “special Valentine’s Day” menu that is actually more expensive than usual anyways?
Why 2. We Think Valentine’s 3. Day SUCKS! 4.
Romantic Comedies. Non-stop marathon on TV of what you wish you had. If you’re in a relationship, he’ll never compare to the charming man on screen. If you’re single, it just makes you feel like a loser. The Single or Relationship Line. So you’ve just been going on a few dates here and there, you know, having fun. What does Valentine’s Day bring? The big questions. What are we? And where are we going? No pressure or anything... The Card Aisle. They don’t make a Valentine’s Day card for friends-with-benefits.
5.
Cliché night out with the girls. Sorry single ladies. Thanks to Valentine’s Day it’s no longer a typical night out with the girls, now it screams WE’RE SINGLE!

When you go to parties with family, friends, etc., you can’t help but be tempted to taste every delicious morsel; especially in the winter when getting bikini body ready is the farthest thing from your mind. This is fine in controlled amounts. If you feel like trying

What do I get my boyfriend for a Valentines Day gift? Listen up girls; I totally feel your pain. ing college students, and if you’re not there you’re just really, really freaking lucky. It’s kind of stressful to be forced to put on our creativity hats and work with our meager funds to make what we HOPE will be the greatest gift ever. But don’t worry your pretty little heads, here are a few ideas to earn you some serious girlfriend points and have you well on your way to the perfect V-Day kiss ;) * Boys, these ideas work for you too! A little thoughtfulness goes a long way with the ladies.
1. A homemade calendar- You can go to the photo department at Rite Aide, Walgreens, or Costco and make a calendar with either pictures of just you or the both of you for each month! He’ll love the thought you have put into it and he’ll never forget the memories you have made together.
2. A Tie Fleece Blanket- You can make a no-sew tie fleece blanket with two pieces of fleece fabric of whatever pattern you think your guy will like best, paperclips, tape, and scissors! The directions are easy and available everywhere online. It can be made with a holiday pattern, or maybe a sports pattern supporting his favorite team.
3. A coupon book- Make coupons promising back massages, dinner or paying to go see a movie of his choosing! You can make as many as you want, and he’ll love that this is a gift that truly keeps on giving
4. A scrapbook- You can include ticket stubs, pictures,
funny quotes, or anything
that you have kept that reminds you of a special time the two of you have shared. You could even include a disposable camera promising to take pictures of more fun times you will have together as a couple.

The Social Code: What women need to know about men.... By Garrett Gage
H
ello ladies, I’m here to give you
the inside scoop on the inner workings of the male mind. It seems that a lot of women think they know guys, most just from reading articles in “girl” magazines telling you what you should do when you’re around a guy. First things first, getting advice on men from other women is a bad idea. Would you rather get advice on your car from someone who watches NASCAR or the engineer
44
that builds race cars?
So lets talk about “guy code.” It’s not that complicated! With men what we say is what we mean. If a guy says he wants to hang out, he wants to spend time with you. You’re maybe wondering, “What kind of hanging out does he want to do?” It’s simple, just ask him, maybe he wants to spend time because he thinks you’re cool, or maybe he wants to take you out on a date, or maybe he just want to have sex. In any case, if you are open and honest, most guys respect that and will be the same. Guys hate cryptic talk, we like a little chase, but not a distance race. Now gals you must understand this, most guys that go to a bar or club are not going there because they like over paying for drinks or enjoy dancing the night away. They came there at the very least to get a number, best case get laid. If a guy buys you a drink, you have just entered into a “contract,” at minimum you should have a conversation with that guy, If you don’t you are in violation of that “contract” and are now considered a B*!ch. That guy will also have no problem letting every person in the establishment know it too.
“Guys hate cryptic talk, we like a little chase, but not a distance race.”
Again ladies, be up front with a guy. If you have a boyfriend or fiance or a husband say so from the start. If you have no interest in the guy, say it. Some guys might try to change your mind, be gentle yet persistent on saying “no, I’m not interested!” If you’re going to the bar on the guy hunt make it clear you’re looking for a fella. Make sure not to let your girls ruin it by interrupting what you want to do. You shouldn’t let any one influence your choices, you might just have a good time. So as long as you be yourself and honest, guys will be honest back. The love stories we always hear about, are from people who are real with each other. No games, no cryptic talk. Just a good conversation and saying this is me, you interested?

Ingredients (this is your shopping list) • 1 pint heavy cream • 1/2 cup butter (unsalted) • 1 1/2 cups grated parmesan cheese (not powdered) • Nutmeg (to taste) • 1 package linguine (or your • favorite pasta) • 1 Tbsp salt
46
Directions 1. In a small sauce pan combine cream and ubtter over medium low heat, stirring until butter is melted. 2. Add parmesan cheese and stir until melted. 3. Add nutmeg to taste. (a little goes a long way, you just want to barely know its there) 4. Take sauce off of heat, and let sit. It will thicken while pasta cooks. (stir every few minutes to keep sauce from separating) 5. Fill a four quart pot about halfway with water add salt and boil. 6. After water comes to a boil add pasta and cook for about 8 minutes (or until done to your liking) 7. Drain your pasta but do not rinse! (we salted the water for a reason) 8. Put pasta back in the large pot and add the sauce mixing together. 9. Serve and enjoy!

ow that the food has been made you can worry about the presentation. You will probably end up doing this at your place, so make it a little nicer: pick the clothes off of the floor, vacuum the carpet, make sure the bathroom is presentable, etc. Clean up! If not the whole place at least clean where you will be eating, this will actually assist in the ambiance of the night.

Sit close to one another and create some nice lighting. This doesn’t have to be a candlelight dinner but something less harsh than those halogen ceiling lights you have. Maybe just a single desk lamp of some other soft light. The reason for this is to make sure you have a distraction free meal together, this means turn off the TV and the dance music. It is ok to have some music, but make it soft and easy to listen to; it needs to supplement the meal, not be the focus.

If you want to watch a movie after the meal pick something your significant other will like. Just because you ahve been wanting to see the latest slasher flick, doesn’t mean you’re special someone will enjoy it. This can be easily turned into a Valentines dinner as well, with a few flowers and some extra decorations this can be very special (chocolate strawberries always help too). Change things up too, these are just some general ideas, try a new recipe or even cook together, it can be a lot of fun. There is no perfect formula for a date night so don’t be afraid to try something new, and maybe even step out of your cliche comfort zone.

Chocolate Strawberries
Ingredients • 1 pint of Strwaberries • 1 bag of chocolate morsels (milk or dark) • Empty ice cube tray (I will explain) Directions 1. Strawberries are currently out of season, so when buying, take care to pick out some medium to large berries that are mold free. Open the package before you buy them and inspect. (nothing is worse than rotting fruit) 2. Wash the berries throuroughly and dry them promptly. (the chocolate won’t stick if the berries are wet) 3. In a microwave safe containers microwave on high 1 to 2 cups of the chocolate (depending on the container) 30 seconds at a time, stirring each time. 4. Once the chocolate is melted dip the strawverreies twice, waiting ten seconds between each dip. 5. Place the strawbverries stem side down in the (dry) ice cube tray and immediately place in the refridgerator. This step is for presentation, you could set the berries ona plate immediately but that causes one end of the berries to be flat and without chocolate. These can be made the night before, but try to do it no earlier than that. Over time chocolate can develop white spots on it, this is called “blooming” this does not change the flavor of the chocolate but it can look a little ugly. On January 1st, new gym memberships soar, salad becomes the most popular item on the menu and people overload themselves with ambitious resolutions for the New Year ahead. Here are some tips to help you stick to your resolution and keep you from settling back into your old routine. 1.) Reality Check. Re-evaluate your resolution. Was it realistic to think you could lose 30 pounds in a month? Probably not! Think carefully and ask yourself what is practical with your schedule and you need a set goal. We’re only one month into the year, it’s not too late! 2.) Stick to It. Once you’ve made up your mind to your

Set goals throughout the year to maintain motivation. Many people have an “allor-nothing” mindset when it comes to achieving goals. It’s more productive to reward oneself for progress, however small. If results are coming more slowly than expected, do not give up! 5.) Take Small Steps. Eating healthy is a one simple way to see results.
