KONiKA Pendant light AO innovations is excited to introduce KONIKA pendant light. As the first Bespoke addition to designer Alex O’Connell’s lighting range, KONIKA is completely customizable to suit the taste of every individual. All components of the light are customizable. This means that users are free to pick and choose between different colours and textures for each individual component of KONIKA. Furthermore, the light shade in every kit is supplied as a blank template. Each user is encouraged to tailor their shade using their preferred material. Creativity is encouraged when choosing from a wide variety of materials. User’s options range from an old scarf or T-shirt to atlas paper or even leather. Every light will be interactively and uniquely designed. Thus, every light will be different. This user interactive design is comprised of In house 3D printed components (3DP) to ensure quality and structural continuity between products.

DESIGN EXPLORATION: Concept Sketches

CONCEPT RENDERS

Through multiple concept thumbnails I explored the possibilities of shape, texture and size. The idea behind it was to create as many different variations of Konika to show its customize ability.

Once I had reached the resolved shape I wanted to get a feel for the concept and gain an insight into how Konika would look as an end product.

PROTOTYPING

At prototyping stage I found that certain components of Konika were difficult to mock-up as they were hard to replicate without actually utilizing 3D printing. Once I was able to print parts, this was still a learning curve because these construction techniques are still underdeveloped.

USER SCENARIO

In this scenario the user discovers that they have a hole in their favourite piece of clothing. Instead of throwing it away they are instead able to salvage the material and use it as a covering for the shade component of their Konika light.

KONIKA PACKAGING

I decided to take a minimalistic approach to the packaging aspect of Konika by using simple laser cut cardboard. This eliminates the need for any printing or graphics. This also gives an organically raw yet cybercrafted feel. In contrast to using plastic, by using cardboard, KONIKA is sustainably packaged.

The images below depict Konika’s moving lense component which can be used to strengthen or diffuse the intensity of light. These parts are made from laser cut acrylic, and are open and closed using the dial mechanism. The user can choose to include this feature or leave it out.
