Zocon is a construction toy that is produced with one of the most popular manufacturing process today, which is 3D printing. The inspiration comes from early construction toys such as Lego, Lasy, and Meccano. The idea is to create a new type of construction toy that can be manufactured by using 3D printing technology and to create a ubique market in toy industry. Other than that, Zocon also enhance the users to create their own geometry form that they can proud of.

INSPIRATION

INSPIRATION Construction Toys Lasy, Lego, and Meccano are some of the best construction toys. These toy let the kids to create their own form and products. Meccano and alsy also make them to understand the engineering part of it by providing them with gears, pully, and even electric motor. The idea from these toys that enhance the creativity of the users is reallly inspiring. By creating your own form and product you will be proud of yourself.

INSPIRATION Zome The name Zome is a combination of Dome and Zonohedron. This term is to describe an unusual building geometry that usually consists of boxes that combined together to create a volume. This technic became the inspiration of Zocon, because as an construction toy, Zocon also can be used to create an abstract and unusual geometry or form.

DESIGN PROCESS

DESIGN PROCESS Sketches In order to create freedom for the users, Zocon consists of the joineries and the pins. The Joinery design is inspired from sci-fi planet that has meteor holes on the surface of it. This was the idea to create holes that can be used for the pins. The direction of the holes also affect the geometry forms tha will be made.

DESIGN PROCESS CAD MODEL

In this design i was still developing and understanding about the placement of the holes. The spehere shapes also became the basic shapes that is fast and easy to do on CAD Software

DESIGN PROCESS CAD MODEL

The idea of this design is by using rotating joinery it will give the user more freedom to place the pins.

DESIGN PROCESS Proposed Model

This proposed design has an organic shapes and form that is perfect to be printed.

PROTOTYPING

PROTOTYPING Test Prints

These are some of prototypes that i printed at RMIT. At this stage i was still struggling to choose the right size for the joinery. This has to be done so i can reduce the printing cost.

PROTOTYPING 3D Printing Process I sent of the parts to be printed by The Objet printer. The material that i used is Fullcure that has a translucent-yellowish colour. It is pretty durable and easy to finish.

PROTOTYPING Dyeing Process In order to give more finish look i looked at some of techniques in colouring the Fullcure material. One of the fastest and efficient way is bye dyeing process. The process starts with putting ordinary clothing dye into warm water. Then the parts are dipped into the water for around 10 minutes. to finish off, the parts have to be soaked in clean water.

INVOICE Final Prototype For the final prototypes i printed 18 parts consist of 9 joineries and 9 pins. The interesting is that the more parts to be printed the less expensive is the cost.
