started in a long journey of testing and concept work. The final product is a voyage starting with one product and finishing with something completely different. There are many reasons for this concept refinement, target audience and personal taste...

Concept Development Once the main concept was chosen, I looked at nature ways of growing trees and different types of plants for inspiration.

Competitor analysis The ideas started as a stool, making a stool different and unique.

These were my core aims at the beginning at of the design process; even tho the concept changed I wanted to stick to the same core aims throughout the project.

Déjà vu The audience targeted would be people that like a twist in furniture, that are open for new and unique ideas. As well as those who have a special interest in modern manufacturing processes.

Déjà vu

At this point I changed from making a Stool to a table, Being the reason that a table is much more likely to sell alone and people tend to appreciate the design more than a stool. It’s also more of a centre piece making it more special.

Tree table development

These were my initial illustrator tree designs, with these I wanted to test a rough idea of how the table would look.

Déjà vu I wanted to use birds on the birds to make the tree table look more realistic. There are two types I wanted to test, the 2 part slot and the 6 part slot.

Déjà vu

At this point of my design process, the design lacked my personal touch. It would just be another table out there. After speaking to other designers I worked out to include my life experiences into the piece. After living in Central America for over 10 years I didn’t find it difficult to relate to my childhood memories, all the good times and bad times. At this point my design project turned over and I looked at it from a different perspective. I started sketching all my memories out to come up with the final design.

I started looking a tree forms and how I could add some of those forms to my design.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS The bottom branches and the other branches are too thin and very likely to snap due to not having any support.

Déjà vu Even tho for this piece 3D modelling is not necessary it was done to have a clearer view of how the product would look like once its made.

I like all the ideas and memories I had, so I decided to add little pieces of my stories onto the table, small details that would make people remember their own stories lived in nature. Adding many concepts to create on design.

Making Processes

ACRYLIC

- 6mm Etching -6mm Acrylic cut - Polished

The reason why I choose laser cutting as the technology I wanted you use, was because the options are limit less. There is so much you can do, and it’s also a new technology that some people have never heard of, making it interesting for them to know and a great tool for you to use.

Acrylic is a beautiful material however the type of acrylic I wanted was an electric fluro acrylic. The main idea was to etch on the top of the acrylic giving it that glowing effect were ever it etched, and cut the a perfectly round circle to have the beautiful glowing edge. The acrylic I purchased was extremely hard to get, due to it being very rare for manufactures to have; since it’s not use very often it’s considered an exclusive acrylic.

Making Processes Beehive

The beehive is also made out of 6mm cut acrylic, this way the whole piece can be combined with the same colour, tying it together.

Making Processes First Model

Déjà vu

My first laser cut model didn’t come out like I expected it, when I tried to slot it through it wouldn’t fit, due to it being too tight. So I had to change the dimensions to make it wide enough for it to fit, also taking in mind the primer and the spray being applied.
