JOSYP LOS There are many criteria that help to define the essential idea and effectiveness of journalism. However all of them are focused on the appropriate dimension — if the means of information of mass media have a positive influence on a person or not? One might be well aware, that the importance of history, the moral progress, are expressed by person as an individual. Nowadays it is wide-known that spiritual emptiness, moral

the direct ques¬tion if such symptoms of degradation were not effected, even decisively, by the journa¬lists? The honest answer to this question will be YES. If we placed the spi¬rit in the second or the tenth place, we would derange our ability to discern the truth. Contemporary intellect has chosen the direction of continuous breaking up, thus devastating harmonious personality, integral of the spirit and creating the man of “bare obviousness”. Having lost spiritual compass, thus cultural rules of con¬duct for perception of the world, submitting the postulates of subject conscious, flat positivism, anthropological transformation, that shakes the world several centuries in succession, the journalism found itself in the state of self-deduction, stopped to be “the votary of truth”, every time considerably avoiding put¬ting things and people in their proper place. In other words it avoids to establish order, balance the nature and society, harmonize relations between the nations in accordance with the principles of equity.

Real art always has ethical nature. Return of aristocratism in journalism, in particular in publicism, presupposes: firstly, gentility of the motivation of publications; secondly, formation of authority to fruitful ideas; thirdly, a wish to detect the truth not only to justify own convictions; fourthly, aspiration not to enslave by the word, but to release, raise hopes (ontological optimism), at last — assistance in mutual understanding between people and peoples on the principles of a near-by to a near-by, not as a producer and a user. Saving transperency of the truth is being created by eminence of the spirit, non-prejudiced investigation of all human traditions — to get powerful moral force, able to exterminate a fear, malignant stereotypes, that is to find out a part of absolute truth. As well as — traditions, ideas of the epoch — in order to take possession of a part of relative truth. At the same time it is necessary to emphasize on an honest discussion, that cannot occur in spiritual emptiness, selection of words, that are able to arouse hidden in us moral forces, to prepare consciousness for accepting the truth, to teach to live, not only to react to the life. We don’t have enough a deep thought, able to enrich our intellect, we don’t have enough a word, able to affect the soul, there is no dyna¬mics, which any education cannot give, but the energy of good will present it. Every nation has to realize its mission and first of all to serve the spiritual progress. We must extol a man over a cold advantage of egoism. In such a way acted nations’ great messengers, who were brilliant publicists, scientists. Such masters of thought aren’t in want nowadays.

Axiological aspect training of journalists becomes the primary duty of the Higher School, social institutions, and editors. The course “Deontology of journalism” is very necessary at corresponding faculties and departments. At the same time we have to synthesize the best examples of specific forms of education, which for the last hundred years have dominated in the circle of European culture: literary, political, social, sociological, commercial, psychological. Let’s remember: the Higher School is the forge of world-view thoughts. It means, that we cannot separate ourselves from the spiritual process, consonant and commensurable with Europe, otherwise we’ll found ourselves on the scientific neighbourhood. Science has to become the determinant for publicism’s search secrets of common history of the human spirit, not just the method of the description of facts.

Mission of a real journalist is to cure souls, to feel points of pain of the epoch, to maintain the highest values. This task has existed for ages and will last for ever and ever — that’s why numerical capitalism won’t abolish it. Means may not become the aim! Postulate “demand causes supply” is a cynic excuse of irresponsibility. Behind the front of feverish fuss, advertising farce, many-voices talkingshop, which imitates polemics, is hiding phenomenon, which unfortunately isn’t of great importance in our days of all-embracing stream of mass-media, — is a need of an apt word that makes clear and explains. All our dignity, Pascal wrote, consists in the thought. Let’s try to think beauti¬fully: here is the beginning of morals. Why nowadays do we seldom ask the question: “How must one make the world better?”

The “Bolshevist” approach “Who — Whom?” is prevailing. Separating facts and values, one causes a suicide of the journalism, equally as science.

Ideological publicism as a “vanguard of the spirit” disciplines the thought, introduces devout thinking into mass consciousness, helps to apprehend high ideals, to percept the world in the epical way, to leave the nar¬rowed state of conscious. It is necessary to describe the present widely, instead of emotional comp¬lains about it,to learn and encourage others to see the future not only materialistically.

points of given possibilities in a proper perspective grounding on “the wisdom of our ancestors” (E. Berk). It is im¬por¬tant not to forget the principle that only moral thinking can create a professional journalism; the spiritual state of the present epoch requires search for the positive world.

If the Word & Sense have been in existence from time immemorial and the world is ruled by Divine Providence, it behooves us to be constantly aware of the potential danger of an ontological rupture. We have in mind the threat of a definitive fall, either into a chasm of materialistic nihilism, or into a mediocrity of falsified religiousness. The creative potential of information as a primary idea allows us to reestablish over and over new contacts between the individual and the world, between reality and sense. Thus, journalistic science and practice are faced with the question of fine-tuning discourse as a process of manufacturing noble ideas, know¬ledge, texts and sciences — in order to add a wealth of vital attributes in social culture, add to provide a conceptual plethora of ideas regarding «truth & verity». Here we have in mind the development — on methodological and theoretical levels — of precise, universal paradigms, which will help to distinguish the essential from the minor, the valid from the deceptive, the beautiful from ugly. At the same time, we are compelled to balance three decisive spheres of human activity, namely — one that deals with the universal outlook, an organizational sphere and a technological one so that television time might not supersede all other forms of time from our consciousness.

Otherwise, moral and eco¬logical crises of humanity will sharply intensify.

Let us consider the judgement of experts, which will help us, firstly, fathom the reality behind contemporary media, secondly, understand the reason behind the chasm between the Word and a word, and thirdly, assess the ways, methods and resources of renewing and re-establishing the esteemed status of the journalist — the apostle of truth, who today is substituted by the notion of abiding by the rules of a commercial enterprise — guaranteeing the fundamental training of journalists in institutions of higher education, and also providing the opportunity for research work for the purpose of knowing, understanding and rediscovering that which is true, as well as the systematization and assessment of universal journalism as an inextinguishable activity of the human spirit.

frightened word goes beyond the tight framework, where it hid between the definitive, discovered truths. It comes out weakened, uncertain, deaf.

It has forgotten its origin: «In the beginning was the Word». It has forgotten its prophetical mission: to be on guard, to awaken and to guide. At the same time, it has lost its applicability: to aim at fallacy».

Daniel Burstin (USA): «One of the paradoxes of political life in the United States suggests that we could construct our institutions in an empirical way, leading up to a complete inability to found a great political philosophy... The enemy of progress is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge... To consider itself the carriers of the highest, obligatory truth for all — this is dangerous for any society» (Daniel Burstin. Interview. Courier of UNESCO, 1991. — March).

The latter judgement is eloquent because many European countries after World War II adopted from the USA schemes of organizing so¬ciopolitical life, and in the realm of mass media — a commercial approach to information. Today, in postcommunist spectrum, some tend — without critical review to duplicate the Ame¬rican system of higher education, journalism. Originally as the bearer of ideas, the mentor of life and the catalyst behind the systematization of social and philosophical ideas as well as crystallization of universal and noble ideas, journalism has transposed itself into a sphere of money making and degradation of values. Consequently, disturbed voices become audible more and more often.

For example, the director of Institute of Journalism at the Taras Shevchenko Kiev National University V.Rizun, while visiting the newspaper «The Day» stated: «We have lost the school of publicistical studies, and in comparing informational jour¬nalism and viable www.CyberEmpathy.com

analysis, there is clear evidence of disproportionality». (The Day, 24 March, 2004, p.2). The head of the Polish Senatorial Commission of Culture and Mass Media, Ryszard Slavinsky, provided an even more expressive view of the Polish press: «The level of the written word is inferior. The press is filled with slo¬gans, superficial generalizations and negative messages... The Polish press has bid farewell to integral reporting (an essay, facts, reflections — J.L.), it has gotten rid of analytical articles, has parted with critical thinking… Because our press is no longer Polish and is dominated by German and Norwegian commercial media outlets… 94 percent of Krakow-based journalists, responding to a questionnaire, recently admitted that censorship exists in Poland. This is a dramatic phenomenon». (Serwis «Polska-Polacy». — 2004 Luty). And Ewa Milevicz quite boldly writes about «the terror of fashionable ideas». A discussion initiated in the Moscow-based «Litera¬tur¬naja Ha¬zeta» which began in the January 14-21 issue, 2004, has an overall alarming accent: «When you open a newspaper, in reviewing the TV program guide, one does not see within the stream of words a difference between PR-related material and reflections on life.

The limit has been wiped away!» And Vitaly Tretjakov investigates whether the use of fallacy in contemporary journalism is an anomaly or convention. The con¬clusions are less than favourable.

A journalist as a man of mission has a lot in common with a writer, a figure of art, scientist, historian, politician, lawyer, priest, speaker, teacher, sociologist, psychologist. Science as the means of cognition, ideology as the means of the valued orientation — all these spheres of cognition and the claim of the truth are appropriately integrated in the overall seeing of a man’s “creation”, organization of society, harmonization of relations between people, cultures and civilizations.

A publicism (journalism) embraces three main spheres of vitally important functions of a man — world view and orientation — foremost, the organization and technology. That is why it is important that it becomes the greatest creative display of a culture. In fact the greatest nature of man — is spirit, divine essence of spiritually-moral bar of the personality. True journalism appeals to the deepening and expansion of consciousness of users of the information and to contributing to the creative, alt¬ruis¬tic way of life. plenitude of human life reduces to the animal beginning of presumptuous con¬sumption, when every difference between subjects is leveled, and the total mediocrity rules the world. Spirituality — is always the appeal from “above” to carry out some¬thing that can not be carried out by itself and requires, however, individual decoding” (Sergij Krymsky, Ukraine).

We must categorically throw away a stereotype “the demand generates the supply”. It was dethroned by Socrates, who said that toadying is a shameful thing, that injustice is the most “disgusting thing as well as depravity of souls”; “when a rhetoric is ambivalent, one of its part is capitation, the disgraceful jabber for people, and the other one — is wonderful, which aspires to the souls of citizens to became better, and which in speeches will always protect that things, which indeed are the best, regardless whether it is pleasant for the listeners or not” (see: Платон. Діалоги. – Київ, 1995. – С. 211). The publicism of thin¬king and high moral duty is able to heal the disfigured mankind, to make it healthier; to renovate the spiritual framework of people’s life, to revive a social optimism and human dignity, to soften internal brutalness, to disrobe vulgar relativism which de¬stroys the culture of freedom and to confirm social justice, “sainted true”.

The crisis of the essen¬se of being has taken place for a number of times during the history of civilization. However, the humanity has always managed to find enough strength and wisdom to fight fear and stale stereotypes in order to discover through the study of diversity of cultures and infinite variety of thought and wisdom the multiplicity of a human being who cannot remain a mere ‘screw’ in a huge mechanism of modern civilization.

The truth is not the product of a hu¬man mind. It exists independently from us. All we should do is try to understand it. It should become a starting point, while we classify and systematize the journalism phenomena that are so polyvariant and deeply rooted nowadays. The main criterium for the truth is good fruits, which in our terms, translates into a word that is able to make noble, releive, and convince.

The researchers from Ukraine, Poland, France, and other countries, have used a number of facts and therefore, prove that:

a) moral issues of journalism coincide with professional ones; b) a publicist should possess a wholesome idea of the world and a human being; c) intellectual interpretation of phenomena should be combined with clear ethical boundaries; d) one should avoid imposing on the consumers of information the fictitios and simplified world, looped on power, money, and things, without religious or natio¬nal conscience; e) the specialization itself should be complemented by the general eruditon.

We should realize that when truth is made serve the deception, enslaving, dividing national bodies and civilizations, when a hypocritical word causes hatred between people and nations — it is the crime against authentic journalism. We should not forget that present political jargon has a manifest business connotation. Reality vividly diverges with this jargon. We should stop the “armament race of positions’ that serve the basis for unqualified publicists who analyze political programes, some¬thing they do not like, ignoring the realm of elevated ideas. In order to become jour¬na¬lists both of the rythm and reflective information, and also of concentrated thought, we should identify ourselves historically, emerge into the past times without rage and prejudice, and thourougly research the tendencies of the evolution of the world. We should listen into life, into a living being, into historical personalities, and into events. We should understand rather than learn, life should be perceived by intuition... Intellectual way hardly touches the outer covering of life, something that is already thickened and solid.

But the hot flowing lava of life can be perceived by intuition only.

Finally, the upper strata of life and genuine crea¬tivity can’t stand the anarchy. We should help people shape clear and integral world outlook, as well as strong and consistent character. Moral and ethical deforming of a personality is often not retributed. A genuine freedom of creativity inevitably dictates the duty to serve the supreme ideals.

Conceptual journalism as a realm of spiritual culture akin to science, art, and religion ensures continuity of spiritual process. Cultivation of nobility and strengthening of freedom-truth of a man are the two brightest goals of each agent of human commuticatoin. First of all , this is true about newspapers and magazines. Over centuries, the field of mass media attracted many thinkers who deeply sensed the world culture. This culture was not only directed at struggle for political www.CyberEmpathy.com

liberation, which is a vital need at times of oppression; the point is that it has an extiemely wide spectrum of influence on the path to conscious, sincere, and focused search for truth-fairness. That is why we have powerful intellectual and mental capital in each nation and the mankind as a whole. We mean not a façade empirical perseption of real life phenomenon, but a thorough analysis of the worldview systems and generalizations as well as the most complicated process of human existence.

Framing approaches to understanding of life, a conceptual journalism should help society to “find” the future that would correspond to organic principle of life. By this we mean a stable basis of life’s construction, namely belief and national tradition. Many emblematic individuals motivated such a need. For instance, Zbigniev Bzhezinski stated: “The world has lost ability to create, think, and product ideas. The world become poor spiritually… God give people, including my compatriots, to understand that these are things in the world that are more existentially important than microwave oven, private plane or smoked sausage” (For more details see: Cвободная мысль. — 1994. — Ч.7-8. — С.19-31).

There is also a worthwhile consideration by Václav Havel, famous politician,

development of our civilization and a gradual decline of national selfconsciousness, in particular degradation of language: “Who spread the poison of disagreement, unfair game, egotism, hatred, and envy in our political and social life? Who lead us to bitterness of feelings and wake us get accustomed to the fact that everybody can lie about everything and everyone” (Вацлав Гавел. Загрози націоналдьній самосвідомості. День. — 2001. — 16 травня).

Imposing universality only for legitimation of market and profit instead of protection of elementary rights as well as domination of commercialization and monopolization of mass media, which causes marginalization of societies, amalgamation of modernity and traditions — all these calls for a need to change direction of the way and to find the model more noble and human than a total and hopeless progress of the modern world. Such a powerful force as mass media is able, in the process of transformation, to adequately define and describe what is going on over several last decades with consciousness and soul of a man as well as with the mankind and the culture that is sphere of values.

creators of the reality. Real creative work with a word is a sacred mystery, since a human voice should reflect the Word which is really God” (Olegario Gonzales de Cardedal).

According to analysts, the informational traffic meets the requirements today.

But it is not enough. The most important thing is to understand the connections between various objects as well as to provide with a fruitful relation between spreading the knowledge, the spiritual emancipation, and a true but not false democratization of the social life; especially during transformational mankind depression when the crisis of consciousness along with its generated mythological systems become obvious behind all occurrences of catastrophic organization of human existence. An overintensive mixing of vital universes results in entropy both on semantic and chronological level.

Fostering

aristocratism

in

journalism (and therefore in a science) foresees first of all a strengthening of truthful spiritual values along with a faith in those values that have been raised by all nations during centuries. Search, analysis, and gaining truth, become though a reference point for a creative person — a journalist and a scholar. We need to remember that superficial consciousness is limited to the function of accommodation to current guidelines that serve interests of a person, a society, or a particular civilization. While a fundamental goal is different: to relate matters of our existence with deep and noble problems of the entire human existence. It means an exclusion of ontological gap. It also signifies an exigency for a discourse as for a process of creating high intentions, knowledge, texts, and science in order to inscribe the wealth of various life characteristics in a social sphere of culture as well as to give a conceptual importance to the concept of ‘the Truth.’ It is all about the formation of the clear world-view paradigm that would help to discern essential matters from temporary ones and valuable from wrong ones.

A sense of history lies in a moral and spiritual progress. Therefore, the axiological aspect of education of a conceptual journalist and a scholar becomes a responsibility of a top priority within the high schools, social institutions, and editorial offices. intellectual work science becomes meaningful only within the distinctly defined cultural context produced by the community of people that are able to come to an understanding. The image of a personality along with the image of the world where the highest mission of a human being is to be realized, have been crystallized in different spheres such as: social, historiosophical, and moral-and-pedagogical.

The goal of thinking is truth; therefore it can not be interpreted toolbased. This very measurement has become too narrow considering modern multimedia epoch, in spite of the apologetics of the developed self-consciousness — the heritage of the European rationalism which makes seeking for the alternatives possible. That is the reason why the world-view publicistics requires a developing of new principles and tools that would be helpful for a human in understanding of the modern world and the epoch; of those processes that take place on our planet.

In other words, the matter is the developing of senses, ‘the advancement’ of an attractive and a real futurological project in mass media sphere in particular. We can not ignore the fact that a human thought is a living spiritual phenomenon and that spiritual world occupies the same space as the physical one does. No over-rational realization that arranges the world perception would reveal in the sole, until the text or the image would become an inner experience for the consumer of the information.

First of all, science as well as publicistics of thinking fulfils a function of evaluation (it is useless to prove that it should be well-founded, competent,

and

opportune.)

Second,

it

helps

to

realize

the

interconnection between phenomena as well as the authentic object quality (moving from statics to dynamics.) Third, it adds intention and movement toward novelty that bring its own energy and content to the research (that is its mobilizing function.) Thus, one could be able to say new innermost thoughts. That is a creation, in fact. We research worldview publicistics as a flow of meanings but not a hermetic system. One of the most important tasks of the twenty first century is an intercultural dialog and a discursive acquaintance with various approaches of different Schools of Journalism. Culture (including symbols, heroes, rituals, and values) is a specific form of communication along with its language and a wide spectrum of spiritual ideas as the most differentiated manifestation of it. Both an intellectual abstraction and a sphere of emotional sensuality play an important role here. important to display unflagging concern for the language prestige (in socio- and psycholinguistic context), and therefore — to reflect the variety of senses [one may read about it in more detail in Roman Szul, Język. Naród. Państwo (Warszawa, 2009), p. 415.]

We should remember that fast and global communication through the word and the image does not mean a simultaneous developing of intercultural understanding (between Schools of Journalism in particular.) The ability to evaluate various things from different prospective gives a significant prerogative. We should therefore, use a thought potential in a more purposeful way being guided by noble motivation. Great opportunities have been created for mass media nowadays. However, further and further we have been less stimulated to think about things but just react and perceive beliefs expressed in short slogans. Meanwhile, it is despotic and destructive for the human nature to cut discussions to primitive conclusions and dogmatic statements of propaganda postulates. The reality is complex, especially nowadays, in time of globalization when historical sovereignty has been scattered.

People may enhance their level of humanity, if they mentally reach a substantial core of the prolific heritage of nations, if they find out the reasons of the worldwide spiritual and ecological crisis. World-view publicistics as a spiritual vanguard should help all social institutions and creative groups to structurize the intellect, sensation, and the will of nations. Journalists with sophisticated and highly developed sense of duty

to serve

the

truth,

elaboration

of

the

soul

and

mobilization of conscience may and are obliged to help the information consumers to look beyond the bounds of simplified and superficial judgments as well as recognize ingenious manipulative mechanisms of the powers that be, the owners of the corporations, and their advocacy in entirely commercialized mass media.

Honest and truthful word is able to inoculate an integral view of things as well as explain thoughts and straighten feelings. In other words, it may uncover the notion of ‘yesterday,’ mobilize the notion of ‘today,’ and clarify the notion of ‘tomorrow.’ Hence, everyone should make a choice either to become a coauthor of the fundamentally new civilization on the basis of culture, or remain just a conjuncture rivet in a soulless machine of fame. Authentical publicistics intensifies light vivifying fundamentals in human nature and ennobles soul without fail.

Creativeness as sublimated action represents numerous journalists who have been interpreting freedom not instrumentally but as a joining of substantial virtues to the highest senses of existence and a support of a profound meaning of a valuable global brotherhood. Moreover, they (journalists) realize those senses in the context of history as there are no times that would be crystallized for good. They would never play shameful role of false arbiters, moralists, and inquisitors. Therefore, the following things need to be done: 1. Conscientious assessment of journalistic and publicistic creative work within the moral categories. “To substantiate eternity” (Mykola Hohol’) means

Sheptycky) in order to sift the ideal, to arrange the space artistically, but not give “the ticket to evil”(John Paul II); 2. To determine on scientific level with help of experts-practitioners, scholars-theorists, and active and thoughtful information consumers how to cease the process of the transformation of a journalist-thinker into image-maker, the process of displacing of creativeness into serving the newest technologies. How and with what world-wide and purely professional recourses one can give a human the guidance on comprehension of mankind freedom as a freedom of culture first and foremost. The freedom of speech — is truth. Creativeness without faith loses its basis. They have demanded moral souls, high intellectual level of those who offer constructive, fair information that liberates but not enslaves. Sociological argumentation for mass media freedom is not enough.

3. Determination of thorough proved criteria of the organization of educational process in higher school as journalistic departments and chairs are first and foremost ‘forge’ of world-wide ideas. Education — is mastering of art on how to use the information. For the future professional (i.e. person of mission), it should develop an integral view on things when one can distinctly realize a global connection between people both inside the national organism and in-between nations, cultures, and civilizations. It depends on generous motivation that is a part of a fundamental preparing of teachers of journalism themselves.

A dynamic development of the media sphere has engaged us to reexamine some fixed stereotypes and reference points on independence, opposition, media literacy, such concepts as ‘the fourth estate,’ ‘information is goods,’ ‘rating,’ ‘objectivity,’ ‘mass media as a mediator,’ ‘informational promptness,’ ‘quality mass media,’ reliance upon a statement that demand breeds supply, etc. Numerous responsible media researchers and experienced practitioners of the world journalism have been writing on those issues more often nowadays. Whatever happens, we should remember a brilliant thought by Vjacheslav Lypyns’ky, a prominent Ukrainian researcher and a publicist, who wrote: “Even the most complex task can be carried out if there are innate natural willing, a distinct idea that realizes its wish, will and mind that are required for the realization of the idea, belief in God and in the fact that this particular idea is concerted with God’s postulates, and love to people and land where and with whom that idea should be fulfilled.”
