Children and Youth in Challenging Contexts Institute An interdisciplinary research initiative The Children and Youth in Challenging Contexts (CYCC) Institute was launched in June 2013 at Dalhousie University to create a network of Canadian and international researchers committed to making a lasting difference in the lives of vulnerable children and youth. Our researchers examine the political, social, psychological and biological factors that pose serious risks to children and youth exposed to adversity across contexts and cultures. At the CYCC Institute, we consider what academic research and practical experience can teach us about the risks facing vulnerable children and youth. We examine the tools that children and youth can draw upon for protection, and we look at what solutions are needed to meet their complex needs and affect positive change on a global scale.

A focus on global risks to children and youth The CYCC Institute is unique among research institutes in Canada in its focus on the risks to children and youth, including: »» Poverty

»» Marginalization

»» Homelessness

»» Neglect and abuse

»» Political and cultural conflicts, and

»» Mental and physical health challenges

exploitation (e.g., Child Soldiers)

»» Developmental problems

»» Inter- and intra-state war and violence

»» Poor maternal health

What we’re doing Research Developing thematic research groups of scholars and community partners to do actionable research that can influence policy and practice.

Training Providing a global network for graduate students and post docs interested in interdisciplinary approaches to the study of children and youth facing adversity.

KMb Knowledge Mobilization

Building connections through knowledge sharing activities, and exploring new ways to mobilize research (and other forms of knowledge) into practice.

A focus on solutions The CYCC Network acts as the knowledge mobilization (KMb) stream for the Insitute. Through this partnership, the Institute has a direct connection to over 200 policy makers, community based organizations, and front line workers. These connections can speed up the movement of research into action, allowing the answers that come out of our research to have a fast and meaningful effect on the lives of vulnerable children and youth in Canada and worldwide.
