Creating The new Full-9 When we started working on the Full-9, the reference library was pretty stacked. First, there was the Moto-9…the only helmet Transworld Motocross called a “Product of the Year” in 2011. Second, we had the world’s best test pilot—Aaron Gwin—not only putting it through the paces on the downhill World Cup, but actually running away with the freakin’ title. Finally, we had the accumulated knowledge spanning the entire history of motorcycle and bicycle helmets to work with. When we finished running it through the world’s most advanced helmet R&D facility, the result was a true masterpiece. Slip one on, take a run and we think you’ll agree.

what’s new
New Segment BMX There’s no question that the simple skate-style helmet is a much-loved classic shape. People love the way they look…but they don’t always love the way they feel. The new Segment is gonna change all that. Despite what looks like a rigid bowl-style shell, the Segment is actually flexible. Utilizing a series of interior EPS foam segments connected by a reinforcing skeleton, the helmet conforms to your head, fitting much more like a cap than a helmet, all while still meeting safety standards. Simply amazing.
New Super MTN All-mountain—it’s right there in the name. We’ve been watching this space and loving what we’ve seen the past couple years. The convergence of hefty DH whips and wispy cross country machines at a midway point exemplified by unbelievably versatile bikes that can do it all…or most anyway. The new Bell Super aims to ride that line too, incorporating innovative eyewear management, camera integration, and advanced ventilation into a purpose-built lid for the new definition of mountain bike.
New Artist Taylor Reeve Bell has tapped Southern California artist Taylor Reeve to create select graphics for the 2013 product range. Though this is her first foray into helmets, Reeves is no stranger to non-traditional canvases for her work, which include custom motorcycles, skateboard and goggles…not-to-mention her signature high heel shoes. Taylor’s distinctive style blends tattoo and Mexican folk art inspirations with a bright, pop aesthetic. Her canvas for this collaboration includes Bell’s new high-end fullface, all mountain and BMX helmets, the Full-9, Super and Segment, respectively. Reeve joins Skratch and Jimbo Phillips on the 2013 roster of featured artists.
New Sport Shape PISTON, STRUT, OCTANE & Buzz Our new sport shape addresses the refrain we’ve heard from recreational riders for years: “Less Tour de France, more baggy pants.” We hear ya…and we got ya covered. Offered in four configurations—Piston (adult), Strut (women’s), Octane (youth) and Buzz (kids)—the new helmets do what Bell does best— serve unmet needs in a cool way no matter what the price point.

NEW MODEL 2013
Born from Motocross Bell might have had an unfair advantage in creating its new top-of-the-heap full-face bike helmet. You see, when you have the world’s best motocross helmet as the prototype (the Bell Moto-9 was Transworld Motocross’ Product of the Year for 2011), your starting point is already laps ahead of the competition. But the Full-9 is by no means a dumbed-down MX helmet—it’s a bike-tuned, ground-up, purpose-built masterpiece. With the help of world cup downhill champ Aaron Gwin—a guy who knows his way around not only a DH sled, but BMX and motocross bikes alike—Bell ran through a myriad of iterations before arriving at the perfect blend. Front-and-center for Bell designers was not just meeting minimum certifications, but incorporating the most advanced, relevant safety enhancements available. That's why we chose to make the Full-9 compliant with the ASTM Downhill (F-1952) and BMX (F-2032) standards in addition to the regular CPSC and CE bicycle helmet standards. It’s also why we ported over the integrated accommodation of the Eject Helmet Removal System and magnetic cheekpads from the Moto-9. These two features allow first responders to gently remove the helmet from a rider’s head, reducing the potential for secondary injuries. The helmet removal system is now required in all pro motocross races and an idea whose time has come—that’s why it’s an option on the Full-9, required or not. In addition to the safety specs, Bell’s designers also went after timely features like Soundtrax—Bell’s built-in speaker pockets and audio cable routing to provide lift line tuneage. The helmet also ships with a pair of slick, integrated camera mounts—one for GoPro and one for Contour cameras—to further meet evolving rider needs. The camera mounts click into a specially designed top vent, eliminating the need for sticky tape or hook-andloop material. Co-molded with a rubber pad to reduce vibration and noise when riding rough terrain, the mount was also built to breakaway, reducing snag points in the event of an impact. Add in a full-carbon shell for light weight, and Bell’s new Overbrow Ventilation intakes which integrate into the proven Velocity Flow Ventilation system to keep you cool…and top it off with amazing graphics and legendary Bell fit, and you have quite simply the world’s best BMX and downhill helmet bar none.

The Overbrow Ventilation™ intakes work with the moto proven Velocity Flow Ventilation system on the Full-9 to actively usher cool air over the head via three ports on the brow of the helmet. Sanction For the young guns Weighing in at 950 grams, the Sanction is Bell’s fully-ventilated, low-profile helmet specifically designed with the younger rider in mind. Its sizing skews smaller than both its predecessor (the Bellistic) and the more robust Full-9 and Drop models. Though we originally envisioned the Sanction for youths, we see quite a few adults who want more coverage than an open-face trail lid choosing this helmet. If it fits you, we’re OK with that. But our rule-of-thumb is if you’re taking a chairlift, go with a Full-9 or Drop…if you’re pedaling—say super-D, BMX or Enduro—the Sanction should serve you well.

Bell’s next-generation Twin Axis Gear™ (TAG) fit system adjusts to the head on two axes—circumferentially as standard fit systems do, but also vertically to better accommodate differences in the up/down position of the occipital lobe. For added comfort we’ve co-molded the system arms with soft rubber and positioned them higher to better accommodate eyewear. The result is the most adjustable, comfortable and easy-to-use fit system ever.
Bell’s top-of-the-line Variable Position Visor allows for 15 degrees of horizontal adjustment by using an imbedded clutch mechanism that holds the visor firmly at the desired angle. Changing the VPV’s angle just takes a simple up or down tug.
In-molding is the process of bonding the helmet’s Microshell to its EPS foam layer to provide a sturdier, more solid helmet. The EPS foam is shot into the thin Microshell cap when it’s in the mold—thus the name—rather than formed separately and taped on later. This process was pioneered by Bell and is now the industry standard for all high-end helmets. All but our hardshell helmets are now constructed this way.
Woven with real silver fibers, X-Static™ Padding is a quickdrying material that inhibits growth of odor-causing bacteria and fungi while keeping you cooler than standard comfort pads.

Snap-In Visor
For the new Volt race helmet, Bell engineers created an airflow matrix that mixes the deeply sculpted Channeled Ventilation ducts with specially designed constriction channels that use the Venturi Effect to increase airflow rates. The result of the alternating high volume and high airflow channels is a system that efficiently moves cool air in the front and exhausts warm flow out the rear of the helmet.

Bell designers have pioneered methods for registering graphics, so that we can make some of the most graphically complex and visually appealing helmets in the world.
Visor Plugs Visor Plugs are designed to be snapped into visor receptacles when the visor is removed to give the helmet a finished look.
Ratcheting Buckle The ratcheting buckle from Bell provides easy fitting with and an additional micro range of adjustment at the buckle.
PinchGuard Buckle Bell’s PinchGuard buckle is specially designed to prevent kids from pinching their neck when they secure their helmet.

Channeled Ventilation Specially designed ventilation channels on the interior of the helmet's liner brings cool air in through the front, passes it over the head and flushes warm air out of the rear ports.
