CYCLE TORQUE DECEMBER 2014 - 2

December 2014

In our December 2014 edition of Cycle Torque we test Yamaha’s latest LAMS bike, the MT-07, we ride Ural’s Ranger sidecar and the 2015 Yamaha YZ125 and YZ250 two-strokes. Besides that we have updates on our long term fleet, Moto Guzzi’s V7 Stone and KTM’s 250SX. One of our readers tells us what it’s like to tour on a 125cc road bike, and on top of all that you should check out the massive Xmas buyer’s guide to get a gift for your favourite motorcycle enthusiast. Let us know what you think of Cycle Torque – we’d love to hear from you if you’ve had any problems with the App, have suggestions about how it works and what you’d like to see in Cycle Torque. CYCLE TORQUE DECEMBER 2014 - 5

POST Intermot WHILE not released at the recent Intermot motorcycle show, the weeks after have seen some pretty impressive machines come out from some of the major manufacturers.

Yamaha R1

weightiness, well the new one has some 20 per cent less inertia, giving the rider better acceleration.

First off the all-new Yamaha R1 sees the first major update since the Crossplane crank version was released four years ago.

There are different riding modes, slide control, wheelie control, launch control, ABS, and a quickshifter as standard.

The Crossplane crank engine R1 has never been that successful as a race bike, at least globally. So, surprisingly to some, Yamaha has retained that layout. But it has been revamped substantially, giving the engine 18 more ponies, now around the 200 mark. Weight savings have been immense, four kilograms alone in the engine, and now the R1 tips the scales at 199 kg. Back to the engine, there has been some intensive development in the engine department of the 2015 R1. It has a new traction control system, width is down by some 30mm, higher compression ratio, lighter pistons, larger air box and the world’s first titanium fracture-split conrods. The crankshaft of the previous Crossplane R1 was known for its

There’s much more to the engine of course, but on the handling side there is a new Deltabox frame, the wheelbase is 10mm shorter, the swingarm 15mm shorter than the current R1. Designed for the track it is. Suspension is KYB front and rear, but the limited edition SP model gets Ohlins electronic racing suspension. Adding to the lightweight theme are cast magnesium wheels, which Yamaha says are the first on a mass-produced model. Perhaps the biggest change is the bodywork which has really put a modern touch to the R1, and the instruments follow this ethos too. No price has been released as yet but needless to say the 2015 R1 will be the best yet, so best get into your Yamaha dealer to find out more.

BMW S 1000 XR Hot on the heels of the S 1000 R, the naked version of the S 1000 RR sportsbike, BMW has released an adventure touring bike using the same basic engine package. The engine is basically the same as the one from the S 1000 R, itself a retuned version of the sportsbike engine. Continued on next page

CYCLE TORQUE DECEMBER 2014 - 6

POST Intermot To be honest, the S 1000 R is one of the best bikes we’ve ever ridden here at Cycle Torque, silky smooth and torquey engine, great handling, and quite comfortable too. A thinking rider’s sportsbike if you like. It was no secret BMW was building this adventure sport version with the inline four cylinder 160hp engine but probably of more importance is how serious an adventure bike it is. Seeing BMW build arguably the best adventure bike ever built, the current R 1200 GS Adventure, there was no point trying to take sales away from that.

MV Agusta Adventure sports has hit the Italian MV Agusta firm with gusto too, and the Turismo Veloce 800 is the result. Powered by a 110 hp inline three cylinder engine, with four engine maps, the Turismo Veloce is aimed at riders looking for some Italian flair without a V-twin engine. There is an eight level traction control system to play with, and this can be switched off too. And if you want more technology there is a Turismo Veloce 800 Lusso available, fitted with electronically controlled suspension. You can go for numerous luggage options, whether it be for day trips or full on touring.

Two riding modes, and Automatic Stability Control, come standard but there’s also optional Dynamic Traction Control and ABS Pro. Electronically controlled suspension system, Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) are also optional extras. With those options installed you will have one serious real world sporting machine, make no mistake about that. In standard form it will be anyway, but the extras never hurt.

There is also a Stradale 800 model, which seems to be a sportier version of the Turismo, shorter travel suspension and so on but using the same overall mechanical package. You can also get luggage options for the Stradale.

Once again, no prices or release date have been nominated by BMW as yet.

No prices or availability released as yet.

We see this as a Ducati Multistrada competitor, and the styling is similar to that of the Ducati too, especially around the front of the fairing.

POST Intermot Ducati 1299 Panigale

Husqvarna Concepts

Just when we thought production sports bikes couldn’t possibly get any more powerful or lighter. The Ducati 1199 Panigale already was at the pointy end of the power/ weight game but the new 1285cc 1299 Panigale is set to blow that out of the water, with a dry weight of 166kg and 205 hp.

Husqvarna has built three exciting concept machines for the recent EICMA show.

The new electronic kit has three different Riding Modes and thanks to the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), you have a Cornering ABS, Wheelie Control (DWC) and, on the S version, the Öhlins Smart EC, electronically controlled suspension.

The Husqvarna 401 Svartpilen (Swedish for ‘Black Arrow’) concept bike is a golden-age inspired modern street bike that draws its design ethos from past iconic Husqvarnas.

The quickshifter (DQS) now works going down the gears, and the Engine Brake Control (EBC) has been optimised by an automatic calibration system which allows for easy changes in tyre size and final drive ratio.

Reduced to the bare functional essentials, they are free of gimmicks, gadgets and extravagant design.

There are minor styling changes, but when the bike is one of the prettiest ever designed it seems a shame to change it in any way. Bikes are expected to be available in March 2015.

A 701cc supermoto is fairly similar to other supermoto style bikes built by Husqvarna, but it’s the 401 Vitpilen and the 401 Svartpilen, which assault our senses here at Cycle Torque. The Husqvarna 401 Vitpilen (Swedish for ‘White Arrow’) draws on the DNA of the pioneering 1953 Silverpilen.

A lightweight four-stroke single is used in a lightweight and compact frame to produce street scrambler and urban street style machines. For us the Svartpilen does it, simple, gorgeous and mean. How much and when can we ride one? n

Sleek Guzzi ONE very cool Moto Guzzi to be unveiled at EICNA was the prototype MGX-21. With the 1400cc V-twin engine and some pretty outrageous styling the MGX-21 would certainly stand out on Australian roads if it gets built. Using the California as a basis, the MGX-21 gets a handlebar mounted fairing, carbon fibre everywhere, including the rear wheel spats, and a front wheel inset cover, which hides the spokes. Very Art Deco. Black is the order of the day when it comes to colour, but we think it looks amazing. n

MotoGP road burner DEVELOPED by Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) and Honda Motor, the RC213V-S is a road going prototype of the championship winning MotoGP RC213V machine. Inspired by, and developed with input from many legendary GP riders, the RC213V-S Prototype is the bike Honda has been rumoured, and riders wanted to see, for years now.

 Ultimate Protection  Better Performance  Longer Lasting  Over 90 years of oil development

But instead of building a V4 machine in the vein of the legendary RC30 and RC45 machines, the RC213V-S is apparently a road going MotoGP bike, much like the Ducati Desmosedici. As a result we will not see them on the grid here in Australia, and probably not anywhere else in the world for that matter, they will simply be too expensive for that, and more’s the pity in our opinion. Two machines were shown at EICMA; a static bike painted with a distinctive Japanese flag, marking 100 years of the EICMA show, and a fully functioning, running version clothed in full carbon-fibre, fittingly ridden onto the stage by 2013/14 MotoGP champion, Marc Marquez. Honda has not released much information about this bike, so essentially we know nothing about technical specifications, how many will be built, when they will be built or even a price. One thing you can count on though is it will be very expensive and there won’t be many of them. n

Xtrainer is a true “all-around enduro bike which is the perfect bike for riders who wish to play ride without the intimidation of a full size enduro machine or for the expert rider looking to enhance their technical skills. Add to this a 43mm front fork along with a dedicated rear shock and you have a bike that is agile and easy to control which builds rider confidence. The chassis is mated to an engine that is from the popular 300 RR but designed to offer a power that is more linear and progressive making the bike more docile. CYCLE TORQUE DECEMBER 2014 - 25

Ego is not a dirty word RIGHT at this very moment I’m sitting in front of the tele watching Jack Miller leading the Moto3 race in Malaysia. This has continued my racing fix this weekend because I spent the morning at the Postie Bike GP at Cessnock. It got me thinking about top racers and their egos. I think the best athletes have to have them, and just because they have big egos I don’t believe that makes them unfriendly people generally speaking. Miller has just put another big move on Alex Marquez, pushing the Spaniard wide, just as he did plenty of times last weekend at Phillip Island. Good on him I reckon. I think Miller probably has a good sized ego to be prepared to put a move like that on, and I love watching the young guy race. Committed and hard as nails. He’s Australia’s Great White Hope and the reason why I’ve started following MotoGP again. Some Aussies like to bag Miller, but I think they are in the minority. Sure he gets a bit shirty with people getting in the way by the looks of it, and probably not always in the right doing so, but there’s that ego thing again. Does having a big ego always work in your favour? Not always but I think more often than not it’s a positive in racing. Marc Marquez’s decision to stay out on slicks when it was raining at Aragon in Spain, and subsequently crashing, was down to a rampant ego I believe. Everyone could see it was going to end in tears, well everyone except Marquez. And it did. Plenty of top level racers have been caught out by their own egos when the decision making process is clouded by self belief. The very best racers know when to use their ego to their best possible advantage. Five laps to go and Miller and Marquez have just bashed fairings big time. Miller’s ego made him say, not today knob head, you are not passing me. And another one, man alive Miller is having a red hot go here. Bloody hell, last corner was wild, Miller got pushed wide

and got second. I think Marquez might be walking down pit lane to chat with Miller after the race but I don’t think that will do him any good. Marquez had a fair old vent at Danny Kent on the slow down lane too – Kent is apparently a good mate of Miller’s – but I think all he heard was blah blah blah in Spanish. I think what I’ve just watched was a systematical ‘bashing’ of Marquez by Miller. I love that kid’s style, he just says it straight during the interview. Great stuff. I wonder if Marc Marquez will give Miller a similar sort of dust up next year when the Aussie is on the big bikes. And as it turns out Marquez’s team has decided to protest Miller’s aggressive riding. In the glory days of Mick Doohan, Wayne Rainey, Wayne Gardner, Kevin Schwantz and co there would be no protests. It would be sorted out on the track. If Marquez didn’t like it he should have fired a salvo back at Miller. That doesn’t mean anything goes, but rubbin’s racing as they say. Now back to the Postie bike GP at Cessnock. Don’t worry there were some egos there, not out for all to see, but when you get top racers going against each other it doesn’t matter what machine they are on, it’s just going to be ‘on’. That’s pretty much to be expected. There was some wild racing to be sure, and the bikes ranged from specially prepared units to ones simply pulled out of the shed. For me it’s a win for grass roots racing. I’m generally not a fan of councils but I feel the Cessnock City Council deserve a big rap here, and so does the Cessnock Motorcycle Club for putting the effort in to see this meeting go ahead.

I’m sure the regular concerns about upsetting residents, insurance and ‘what if they get hurt and sue us’ worries were thrown about in the council chambers but the right people in the council were able to rise above that and see it would be good for the town. And in my opinion it was, with a good crowd – although better promotion would have helped – and good industry support for the event making sure it went off well. By all accounts an agreement has been signed with Cessnock Council for the event to be run for another five years. I hope this is the case because I can only see the event getting bigger and better, and it is down to the efforts of a group of hard working people with a vision. Good on them. – Chris Pickett

Champions of 2014 AS WE launch ourselves into the festive season this is as good a time as any to look back over the 2014 race season and recount how each of our favourite racers managed to end their championship on top. 44 year old Greg Hancock is the oldest rider to take out the World Speedway Championships while being the first American to do it three times and even more impressively he is the first rider to win the title after missing a whole round of racing. Hancock severely injured a finger at the Garzow GP and was forced to sit out the Nordic GP but the gutsy Yank returned to the fray just days after getting pins and screws out of his finger and scored three wins and 15 valuable championship points at the Scandinavian GP. That set Hancock up for the final round in Poland where all he needed was 10 points to wrap up the title and that was accomplished with ease thanks to three heat wins and two second places on the night. “Every year I ride, the biggest carrot at the end is to win the World Championship. The first one was fantastic, the second one was amazing and this is unreal.” Ryan Villopoto won seven rounds on his way to his fourth consecutive Monster Energy Supercross Championship all the while battling a knee injury that was so severe that it would not only put him out of the 2014 AMA Motocross Championship but also put paid to a 2015 title defence. “It is a long season, and it is hard, but I have good people behind me that give it 100 per cent, something started to click for me about halfway through the season and I am excited to have another championship.” Thanks partially to the extra rehab needed on his knee, Villopoto announced that he will contest the 2015 World Motocross Championship that doesn’t start till March 2015 before retiring from the sport altogether. Ken Roczen’s rookie season in the 450 class for the 2014 AMA Motocross Championships saw the German win eight of the 24 motos while landing on the podium 21 times so it was no wonder he won the title convincingly from the ever reliable Ryan Dungey.

“I made it happen, which is a big accomplishment. I was almost going to say I had a tough year, but actually my results were pretty solid throughout the whole year, even though at one point I didn’t go as well as I wanted to, but in the end, the points standings are the way they are.” Jeremy Martin stormed his way to the AMA 250cc Motocross Championship after winning the opening five motos of the year before wrapping up the title with a round to spare. “It’s definitely a dream come true, I’ve been with Rockstar since I was on 85s so I’m pumped they stuck behind me and I was able to get a championship with them.” Antonio Cairoli won 16 motos on his way to 29 podium finishes and nine GP victories serving up his 8th World Motocross Championship all the while battling a niggling ankle injury and the death of his father just 10 days before the British GP. “I am delighted to win this title, it was a difficult championship psychologically, because of everything that has happened to me. I want to dedicate this title to the memory of my father Benedict. I’m very happy with my season. I almost always made the podium, took home more serious points and rode well.” Jordi Tixier’s 2014 season was an emotional roller-coaster but as it turned out the 22-year-old Frenchman managed to rack up 10 podium finishes, three race wins and two Grand Prix wins to be crowned the FIM World MX2 Motocross Champion in the best possible way by winning the final GP of the season. “I can’t believe it, after I crashed in the first laps of the second moto I thought the championship was over and I tried to give it everything. Then when I crossed the finish line I thought, ‘I did it’ and it’s really nice to win like this.” Matt Moss has dominated the Australian Motocross and Supercross scene over the last two seasons and after wrapping up his fourth national championship in two years at the final round of the ASX at Brisbane the factory Suzuki star had this to say, “I have to thank the best team in the paddock, they understand what I

need to win, I can’t thank my whole family enough, we have been in this game for a long time and we stick together, I have never been in better shape physically and mentally and I can’t wait for the challenges that 2015 has to offer.” Matt Phillips created World Enduro Championship history by becoming the first rider to win a junior and senior championship back to back and the gutsy Aussie did it despite missing the GP of Mexico thanks to a broken foot suffered during the Swedish round. “I’m lost for words, to win a championship for my first time in the senior ranks is more than I ever expected. All season we have fought hard, it’s been a great battle and I’m delighted to have won.” Toby Price’s 2014 season has been a dead-set cracker and when you consider that it was just over 18 months ago that the KTM star suffered a broken neck while racing in America you have to take your hat off to the likeable 27-year-old who has won the Finke and Hattah Desert Races, the Australian Off-Roach Championships and the WA Desert Tri-Series. “I’m over the moon, the whole KTM team has worked really well and helped me achieve my goals to get back on the bike after the injury last year and try to win races again. I didn’t think winning a championship would come again so soon, but that’s what we strive for.” So there you go, champions all of them. To win a title takes determination, skill, the right people behind you, and some luck. But it goes without saying that all these riders have something which sets them apart from the rest. – Darren Smart

Marquez Bros v Jackie Miller THE racer formerly known as the G.O.A.T took a big risk when he controversially sacked long-time crew chief Jeremy Burgess last year. Whichever way you look at it, 2014 has been Valentino Rossi’s best season in yonks with wins at Misano and Phillip Island. Aged 35 with nine world championships under his belt, Rossi is now the elder statesman of MotoGP, showing due deference to new king Marc Marquez while besting teammate Jorge Lorenzo at the same time. There is no doubt that Rossi would love to beat Marc Marquez in a knock down drag ‘em out race reminiscent of his duels with Casey Stoner, but the wily Italian realises he is just too old and Marquez simply too quick for that to happen. If we could put Marquez in a Tardis and send him down the time tunnel to 2008, it would be very interesting to see if Rossi would bow to Marquez as he does now, or do everything he could to unseat him as he did to Casey Stoner. One senses that Marquez would’ve had a target on his back in an era when Rossi was at his ruthless best. It was in 2008 that I first saw Marc Marquez at the Australian Grand Prix when he was 15. He looked about 12, but managed a podium that year on his KTM 125 and joined the likes of one-time rookies Rossi, Melandri, and Lorenzo as a future superstar. Born 14 years apart, Rossi and Marquez are almost two generations adrift in racing parlance. Rossi has implicitly anointed the Spanish genius as heir to his crown of G.O.A.T, something he would have never considered with Stoner or Lorenzo for they were/ are fierce generational rivals, even if they are quite younger. Rossi is also very PR savvy and understands that Marquez is a record-breaking phenomenon who is incredibly popular world-wide, and has wisely hitched his VR46 brand to the

#93 bandwagon. Both riders approach MotoGP with the same dolce vita zest for spectacular riding and passing moves, all done with ear-to-ear grins The racing at the front of Moto3 has been brutal all year, but especially at Phillip Island and Sepang. win, lose or crash and a genuine love of what they do. But Marc made the distinction that Miller had Marquez’s record-breaking run, but faltered in the latter pulled his move six times, more than he had ever seen in one rounds with tyre troubles. GUNTRIP

CYCLE TORQUE DECEMBER 2014 - 29

Tail Gunner AFTER we’d had breakfast at my place for the first time I asked the lady of the hour if everything was okay. She gave my beloved Bialetti coffee pot a disapproving glance. “I suppose so,” she sniffed,” as long as you like grey coffee.” A shaky start, true, but this wantonly acerbic comment marked the beginning of an enduring, if critical relationship. My motorcycles received similar mordant pronouncements. Regarding my long-suffering Bandit for the first time, she frowned at it and said: “It’s not a handsome machine, is it?” To be fair she delivered this terse judgement with the air of regret she might have used on an idiot nephew who, though useful with a paint brush or chainsaw, wasn’t really cutting it in quantum mechanics. Game to the last, she masked her distaste for long enough to clamber onto the pillion perch and come for a shakedown canter, and later admitted to enjoying the outing. And I was happy too, because despite her misgivings she proved a natural passenger. There was, true, a certain amount of gymnastics involved in hoisting herself aboard, but it got better from there, and come the end of the trip as she reversed the gymnastics routine to return to planet Earth I reflected that I’d barely known she’d been aboard. This weighed more heavily in the balance of life than all her sniffs of disapproval put together, because in my humble experience good passengers make the Gouldian Finch look tired and commonplace. Riders themselves, as we all know, make woeful passengers; they’re forever reaching for ’bars, throttle, clutch or brake, at least in spirit, and these mental processes have physical echoes in miscellaneous shufflings and twitchings, all of which add up to subconscious resistance against what you, the registered keeper and designated pilot of the vehicle, might want to do. So forget fellow riders. The rest of humanity fall into four basic categories: fiddlers, jumpers, racers and lumps. For me, the most common, and the

most difficult to criticise, are the fiddlers. These, by whatever miraculous process, have developed such confidence in the pilot’s abilities that they’re content to spend the duration of the journey turning out and inspecting the contents of handbags and/or pockets, subject fingernails and even makeup to such minute scrutiny as the bike allows, and peer about at the scenery as takes their fancy. And, as I say, they’re tough to grumble at because they obviously have immense belief in what you’re doing. The jumpers are a much tougher proposition. These have ignored the detailed, principled and lucid instructions you’ve offered about the merits of sitting still and following what you, the rider, might do. They’ll jerk about according to whims of their own, disregarding speed and direction of travel, to satisfy their curiosity about remote processes of the outside world they’ve no business taking an interest in if they want to end the day in one piece and tucked up in their own bed. Imagine trying to transport a red setter puppy or walrus on the pillion seat and you’ll have the idea. But what am I talking about? I’m sure you’ve had plenty. The lump is the clean opposite of both the jumper and the fiddler. Zero confidence in the pilot, regarding every move of the rider’s as a recipe for disaster: for the lump, death or disablement lurks around every corner, every move has not only to be opposed but resisted; the rider proposes one move, the lump will do the opposite in the delusional belief that it’ll be the best way to survive the day. Fat chance. That way, as you and I know to our cost, the almost inevitable

result is a close inspection of the shrubbery or concrete. But they’re not the worst, not for my money. That questionable accolade belongs to the racer. This endearing little bunch might have trust in the rider, but not the confidence that he or she is doing the best possible job; the racer can corner faster, brake later and accelerate harder. They’ll slide off the saddle, hitch knees out into the breeze, practise body shift and, worst of all, offer unceasing advice by yelling in your ear. There aren’t many of these around. Not surprising, really: they’re probably all in casualty, for one reason or another. So there we were. After we’d finished our grey coffee and made our way outside on that cheerful spring morning for our first ride together, all of these grim options remained not just possible but likely. As I thumbed the Bandit’s starter button and watched her put on her helmet and gloves, part of me wondered which of these she’d turn out to be. Another, smaller part of me was plotting revenge for the coffee pot insult. Two-up motorcycles are not democracies. – Bob Guntrip

N RIDING GEAR: SHARK HELMET, IXON JACKET, MOTODRY GLOVES, DRIRIDER BOOTS.

I’VE long been a fan of big bikes producing big horsepower, but just lately I’ve been surprised just how much fun I’ve been having on smaller, lighter machines - most of them LAMS approved. Yamaha’s new MT-07 is one of this new breed, joining the Ducati 659 Monster and Triumph Street Triple 660. Interestingly, all three of those models are modified versions of middleweights which weren’t originally designed for Australian Learner laws, each machine requiring its factory to reduce the capacity a little to get them under the 660cc LAMS capacity limit. Despite this, all three are great fun, sharing important characteristics like great steering, quality suspension, a willing engine and naked good looks. Yamaha’s come a little late to the party, but its entry is very impressive.

Class leading With more torque, the best power to weight ratio and priced quite a bit below its European competitors, the MT-07 is a very attractive package. Its DOHC cross-plane parallel twin features a 270-degree crank, something Aussies fell in love with back in the nineties when the spiritual predecessor to this machine, the TRX850, was introduced. The TRX was a huge success in Australia, the half-faired lightweight economic cafe racer selling in droves, and they still command quite ridiculous prices considering how old they are. The TRX was a success because it looked good and was a delight to ride because it was light and fun. The MT-07 has inherited those attributes, although its style is in keeping with the modern MT (Massive Torque) range.

A bit of history Yamaha’s MT range started with the MT-01, a radically-styled naked powered by a 1700cc V-Twin which we’d first seen in a cruiser. It wouldn’t have been politically correct to call the bike Massive Wheelie, but that’s what it was capable of. North of 20K when launched, you could buy an R1 and a set of racing leathers for less. It had no touring ability thanks to a tiny tank and no luggage, and the pillion seat was tiny, so only those who actually rode one started to understand why you’d want one - and I still do. Yamaha kept the bike in the range quite a long time, but it was quietly dropped a few years ago. In the meantime Yamaha introduced the MT-09 and MT-03. The inline-triple powered MT-09 is a stonking middleweight machine with a huge fun factor. The MT-03 is a big single which is something that is described as a RoadsterMotard, and is a radical machine in many ways, but it’s an acquired taste. All MT models are a heap of fun to ride, thanks to the engineers focussing on torque rather than power.

Enter the 07 Commuters might ignore the MT-07, because the sticker price is higher than most scooters, many small Japanese-brand machines and most of the Chinese and Korean Continued on next page

bikes available – but they will miss out on one of the best city carvers around. In a previous life I was a motorcycle courier, and an MT-07 would have been awesome for the job, and still entertaining on weekends. Yamaha sold squillions of learner legal sporty naked machines in the seventies and eighties, to young riders looking for performance they could legally ride and more experienced riders looking for lightweight inexpensive fun. The MT-07 is aimed at the same market. It’s just legal for learners – the capacity and power-to-weight ratio is on the limit – but it’s also physically big enough and capable enough to appeal to more experienced riders.

The engine The all-new 655cc engine is a gem. Yamaha’s thrown a lot of its recent technology at the motor - 270-degree crank, Crossplane crankshaft, single axis balancer - to build an engine which produces 57.5Nm of torque at just 4000rpm. This means the bike has a lot more grunt than just about any other bike in its class, and with a great feel - the 270-degree crank makes it sound and feel more like a V-twin, the balancer and rubber engine mounts taking out the tingles. Intake is via fuel injection, the exhaust a compact 2-into-1 system with stubby muffler. Maximum power of 52HP is at 8000rpm, which effectively means you’ve got a really meaty midrange of 4000rpm (maximum torque) to 8000rpm (maximum power). This makes the bike really easy to keep on the boil, which makes for faster, safer riding.

Chassis and suspension Yamaha had to keep the cost down somehow, so a steel backbone chassis and swingarm were developed rather than using more-expensive alloys. By using the engine as a stressed member the chassis is lighter than you might expect,

and it’s also enabled Yamaha to keep the bike very slim, which makes it a lot easier to get your feet down when stopped. The swingarm is asymmetrical, the right hand side banana-shaped to give the exhaust the space it needs. It’s connected to the bike via a linkage and single rear shock, adjustable for preload only. At the front is a set of nonadjustable 41mm upside down forks. I was impressed with the handling package. The bike steers beautifully, the suspension works well even over bad roads and essentially the bike never did anything untoward. It’s no R6, but it doesn’t need to be taken to a suspension specialist at its first service, either.

The ancillaries A pair of 10-spoke cast aluminium wheels add to the good looks of the machine. The front is equipped with a pair of big wave disc rotors and fourpiston calipers, which do a good job of pulling the bike up. They don’t have the power or bite of the units on Yamaha’s sportsbikes, but I certainly didn’t have a problem with them. ABS isn’t available on the Australian-spec MT-07. The instruments are all LCD and very modern. A big digital speedo, bar-graph tacho, clock, fuel gauge, gear indicator…

Conclusion The MT-07 is an awesome bike. It’s not perfect and it’s not for everyone, but at under 10K ($8,999 + ORC) parked in your garage, it offers more performance, versatility and style per dollar than much else I can think of. Watching Dave McKenna performing amazing stunts on the bike, in the wet, showed how capable the machine is in the the right hands, but it’s also able to be ridden moderately if the pilot is less experienced. With learners unable to ride everything for up to three years these days, it’s good to see bike manufacturers building machines which will be good to own for that length of time - indeed, I wonder how many buyers won’t bother upgrading at all. n

Cold War survivor N TEST BY CHRIS PICKETT PHOTOS BY BRIAN DYER N RIDING GEAR: RXT HELMET, SCHOTT JACKET, IXON GLOVES.

THE Ural sidecar has its origins in Germany, was further developed in Russia and is now owned by American based Russians. A long road you might say, and although many years have passed since the Russians took the design as part of the German/Russian non aggression pact in 1939 (yes, before Germany went back on its word and invaded Russia two years later), the humble Ural still has an old world feel about it, and in my book that’s very much part of its allure.

Shared technology There are a number of 2014 model Ural sidecars available from dealers, and they all use the same mechanical package. Even the wheels, frame and fuel tank are the same, except for the ‘Retro’ model, which copies the old style Ural look. But even then there’s not a huge amount of difference. Power is supplied by a 750cc air-cooled flat twin, very BMW in style, and considering it’s based on the R 71 BMW that makes sense. It has two valves per cylinder, a square bore/stroke ratio (78 x 78), has fuel injection for 2014, and a power output of 41hp, and 56.9Nm of torque. Hardly stirring stuff on the grunt front but we’ll talk more about that later. Things have come some way since 1939, as the fuel injection shows, so an electric start is standard, but it does have a kick-start as a back up.

Four gears propel the Ural forward and there’s a reverse gear too, always handy on an outfit. Brakes are a mix of Brembo and HB, so straight away you can see stopping isn’t likely to cause concern.

The models There’s four to choose from, the standard T Model, which is basic in its accessories more than anything else. It comes in two colours only, red and black. One of the most accessorised models is the Ranger, with sick colours to choose from, including a cool Urban camo. Its list of accessories includes a luggage rack, spare wheel, shovel, spotlight, leg shields and a jerry can. There’s lots more of course but that gives you a clue that it looks to be the most ‘militarised’ of the bunch, especially in the camo colour scheme. The Tourist Model also comes in a variety of colours and has a screen for the sidecar, a tonneau cover for the sidecar passenger, a spare tyre and a full twoperson seat on the bike, rather than the usual single seat. For the rose tinted glasses set there’s also the Retro Model, which comes in limited colours, including olive. Its features take something from each of the other three we’ve mentioned. Really it comes down to what look and features you’re going for. Personally I like the Ranger, mainly because of all the military bits and bobs on it, and I’d go for a camo paint scheme I reckon. Imagine swanning around with a fake machine gun hanging off it. Wonder how long it would take to be stopped by the police with that. Prices are $19,200 for the ‘T’, $20,900 for the Tourist, $21,990 for the Retro, and $21,900 for the Ranger. All prices are plus on road costs. Warranty is two years and unlimited kilometres so Ural Australia backs its machines.

Back road nirvana The Ural is best suited to back road enjoyment unless you are an experienced outfit pilot. They will sit all day at 100km/h so easily coping with keeping up with freeway traffic but with just over 40 hp on tap it’s not likely to challenge many things up long steep hills. Our test loop was all country road, from straight stuff to nice winding and hilly roads, perfect for the Ural. It starts easily, is surprisingly comfortable even with the solo seat, and even with two big lumpy blokes on board cruised up to 80km/h with ease. As I said it will go faster than that but seeing we had a couple of outfit novices on board I wasn’t about to get too carried away. It doesn’t take too long to get used to how the Ural outfit feels, its brakes have plenty of bite and feel, the engine is very torquey so you snick it into top and stability is one of its virtues. Once I started to get the hang of turn left and power on, turn right and ease off to get me around the respective corners I, and my fellow lumpy outfit partner, started to have a ball. At one stage while negotiating a river crossing I nearly speared the third wheel off the crossing, so it was a good reminder to remember how wide the outfit is. I even managed to do some off-roading on the Ural, and regardless of the road surface the outfit handled well. Ground clearance is good, and the weight of

around 350 kg must have helped with traction because even grassy slopes held no fear for the Ural or its intrepid riding pair.

Verdict I very much enjoyed my time on the Ural. Even though in the past I could never have imagined I’d be interested in riding one I have to say it was a lot of fun. I liked the simplicity of the mechanical package, and in fact I think this is a big part of the charm. I mean, who doesn’t love retro machines? And there’s plenty of retro in the Ural. With such a flexible engine it’s easy to ride, there’s no need to rev the engine hard and smash through the gears. This allows you to really enjoy what’s around you and the laid back feel of the machine. The idea of putting the bride in the side and heading into the country for a weekend or a week away really appeals to me, it’s what in my opinion the Ural is all about. I loved it. n

ANYONE with half an interest in motocross will be able to tell you about the return in popularity of the mighty 2-strokes. Sales have strengthened of 2-stroke machinery in recent years and their place in the market is strong and stable. For 2015, Yamaha has updated its entire ring ding line up. The 125cc and 250cc bikes both see a number of changes which aim to keep the YZ range new, modern and up to date with what we see on today’s showroom floors.

125 & 250 Both of the full sized bikes share the same upgrades for 2015. Modern, aggressive styling is the main drawcard with new plastics and graphics giving the new Yamahas a trick new look. The latest KYB SSS spring forks have also been fitted, these are the same forks which can be found on both of the new YZ-F 4-strokes, with the only exception being that the YZ forks have different internal valving, developed to suit the unique 2-stroke handling characteristics of the YZ machines. The triple clamps are new for 2015, and are developed to match the KYB SSS fork. They deliver a combination of stability and flex in the front end that aims to improve rider confidence. Finally, new brake disc guard, brake caliper guard, larger footpegs and the latest Dunlop MX52 tyres complete the new features on the 2015 Yamaha 2-strokes.

The engine, drivetrain and chassis remain the same for the YZ125 and the YZ250. Riders should be happy with this move, as the previous model Yamahas were known for being powerful bikes with great handling.

Race Kits Along with the new purchase of either of the new 2015 Yamaha YZ 2-stroke from an authorised Yamaha dealer, customers will receive a GYTR developed race kit at no extra cost. The ‘free’ race kits are tailored to suit each machine. Included in the 125cc kit is a GYTR HGS muffler, GYTR launch control, GYTR 50T alloy rear sprocket, GYTR 270mm oversize front disc and caliper mount, Yamalube oil pack, V Force 3 reed block and an aluminium folding race stand. The 250cc kit is very similar, but you get a GYTR 50t sprocket and a GYTR FMF nickel exhaust pipe.

On the track

Just like they have always been, the Yamaha 2-strokes are so much fun to ride. The YZ125 handles like a dream, it’s sharp, responsive and can take you anywhere on the track. It rails ruts and soaks up the bumps no problem. The suspension set-up is a little on the softer side of the scale, as the 125 is aimed at your smaller or more junior rider. This makes the 125 very forgiving to ride as the track develops during the day. The engine is everything you would expect from a 125 2-stroke, it’s all revs. When compared to other 125cc 2-strokes the YZ is one of the best engines around. It has a nice spread of power off the bottom and through the mid, and it really cracks open once you get it revving hard. Keep it on the pipe and the YZ125 is a very fun and rewarding bike to ride. It’s got plenty of power up top, as long as you can hold the throttle this thing will keep revving and make good power. The race kit power parts, GYTR Muffler, V Force reed block and 50T rear sprocket are the perfect bolt on combination for the YZ125. It brings out the best in this engine and all parts work very well with the standard jetting. It is also worth noting that this is the exact set-up that the Yamaha Junior Racing Team have developed as a base set-up for all of their sponsored riders in Australia. 250cc 2-strokes aren’t for the faint hearted. The YZ250 is a fast, powerful and aggressively tuned machine and from the moment you roll onto the track you know you are dealing with a much more serious motorcycle. The power comes on strong on the YZ, it’s got good bottom end power which then transitions into a very strong mid-range. The grunty, powerful mid-range has a nice hit of power and when you move through this part of the powerband you start gathering speed and revs quickly. Up top the YZ will hold its own against any other 250 2-stroke. It’s fast and capable, and doesn’t feature a ton of over-rev. As we noticed on the 125, the GYTR developed race kit, works very well on the 250. The GYTR FMF exhaust delivered controllable power without sacrificing any of the aggressiveness and fun of the YZ engine. The oversize

front brake disc really comes into play on the 250. The improved stopping power was much more noticeable as you were trying to pull up the big 250. The GYTR disc offers a very similar feel at the lever, but provides a whole lot more stopping power at the wheel.

Verdict The Yamaha 2-strokes are a very attractive buy. They offer affordable fun, with low maintenance costs and a lot of bang for your buck, especially when you consider the value of the GYTR race kits. The 125 is a great entry level bike for those just starting out, or the younger riders moving up from a smaller bike like a YZ85. The 250 is a bit more of a niche market bike in today’s motocross market and with the rules allowing 250 2-strokes to race against 250 4-strokes in senior classes, it’s an an attractive race machine for the more experienced rider. The YZ125 retails for $8,699, and the YZ250 $9,999. n

BOOK REVIEW

DOMINATOR IN THE SHADOWS Following in the footsteps on his first book, The Old Mechanic, Peter Uren continues the story of George's workshop and the growing number of characters now swirling around the fringes. There are a number of sub-plots in this sequel involving not only the personal lives of the apprentice mechanic and the newcomer in the workshop but also involving motorcycles connected with the realisation of several peoples' dreams. As much as I enjoyed the first book because of the activity in the workshop centring on all the restoration/maintenance work taking place on the various customers' classic bikes, this sequel has an extra dimension. Two people are chasing their dream bikes in this story, one is a customer chasing his dream of owning a Vincent Black Shadow, the other is the old mechanic chasing his dream of owning a Norton Dominator 650SS and enjoying impending retirement. And that's one of the things that I enjoyed even more; the fact that Dominator in the Shadows follows those two dream sub-plots from start to finish in this book. The other sub-plots follow various characters personal lives, some more closely connected to those dream motorcycles than others but all adding their dimension to the story. I think Peter also makes an excellent philosophical point in this story in that it's good to have a dream and plan accordingly, but it's probably just as important, if not more so, to make sure that you get to enjoy it with someone. $17 for Old Mechanic $23 for Dominator In The Shadows – Dennis Penzo

TT MILESTONES, IN THE NUDE

IT MAY have been an early mid-life crisis or a moment of madness but Rachael Clegg decided to make her own contribution to the world of nude motoring calendars with one that pays homage to the most challenging event in motorsport the Isle of Man TT Races. But it’s not all about flesh. Each image is carefully crafted to interpret an event in the TT’s 107-year history and shot in the same location as the event itself. Consequently, Rachael’s been in a variety of strange poses and guises across the TT course. This fusion of fact and beauty is printed onto 14 leaves of highend art paper with German, Japanese and Dutch translations. “I wanted to capture how utterly bonkers the TT is, but also celebrate its quirkiness - this is a race, after all, that takes place across 37 and three quarter miles of public roads. It is, without a doubt, the most challenging event in the motorsport world.” Rachael’s father, Noel Clegg, and grandfather, Tom Clegg, were both TT racers so Rachael is more than well-acquainted with motorcycle racing. In fact, she’s borrowed leathers, bikes, jerry cans, side car outfits and much more from the likes of John McGuinness, sidecar champion Dave Molyneux and Guy Martin. CYCLE TORQUE READER FEATURE

Small Bore

Madness Determination and a big heart, both in man and machine, proves you can ride anything just about anywhere. ABOUT twelve months ago, I purchased a second hand Kymco 125cc road bike for the purpose of getting to and from work in the city. Working split shifts catching trains in the morning and evening was costing me an arm and a leg! The Kymco is one of the smallest capacity bikes I have owned. It cost me stuff all to buy, and is very easy on fuel. I get almost 300km to a tank of petrol (10ltr) so it only cost me about seven to eight dollars a week to get to and from work. This was a lot better than forking out about $45 per week, for public transport. I've been riding motorcycles for about 40 years, dirt bikes, road bikes of varying capacity, even a postie bike. Nearly all theses machines have given me a lot of pleasure, and sometimes a bit of pain. However, the Kymco gave me pause to think how underrated 125cc bikes are. When I moved from Sydney to my property north of Mudgee, I decided to ride the Kymco. It took me nearly one hour from Sydney's inner west to get onto the Newcastle Freeway. I connected with the newly opened Hunter Expressway then onto the Golden Highway. The bike was carrying myself as well as a fair amount of baggage on the back seat and the carry rack, way outside its intended design. The Kymco is not a high-speed bike, however it purrs along happily at about 80-90kmh on the freeway, the engine ticking over between 6 and 7000rpm. The redline on the tacho starts at 8000rpm, ok for an occasional burst of the lightning speed at 110kmh! Pushing the tacho up to 9000rpm, no oil leaks, at 1000rpm over redline – this engine loved it. Best to take it easy though, nonetheless, this is one durable item!

The motor did not miss a beat. In fact, I reckon the gutsy little bike loved it! My cruising speed was a bit slow compared to my usual speeds on freeways, albeit on much larger bikes, but it was a very relaxed ride. I did just under 400km on this trip for the grand coast of about $25 in petrol and minimal oil consumption, even though the motor was running close to the redline most of the way. You want to ride it where? So far, so good. The Kymco did what it was asked to do, It got me to my destination in one piece and I really enjoyed the ride. I was 'home', all good, and thought, 'this little beast is unreal, fairly comfy too, I could ride it a lot further........' Then the madness began. I was dithering about on the property, enjoying the peace and serenity that comes with living in the bush. Suddenly, on impulse, I decided to visit friends at Byron Bay, and drop in to see my son 'en route. He resides in a rural setting just north of Taree, a good place to do an overnight stop as the whole trip from my place to Byron Bay would be over 800km. Being an experienced tourer, I checked my 'out of date' maps, to plan my route. I would leave the property after lunch, ride to Merriwa, then the back road to Scone, out across to Gundy, go over the Barrington Tops, through to Gloucester then hit the Pacific Highway at Taree. Confident I could do it, with the occasional 'too late to go back now, am I stupid or what?’, thought, drifting through my brain. I knew I couldn’t stay at Moonan Flat, as I was cash strapped at the time and had money only for petrol. This would mean riding all night, much of it on dirt, in the cold. It was winter after all.... The trip was easy to Scone, pushing along at a sedate pace then turning off to Gundy, to tackle the Barrington Tops. This was risky, even dangerous, but I had no choice I’d made the commitment to go on! When I finally got to my son's place,

late at night, bloody cold, battered and weary I told him what I had done, he said, "Dad, you're a bloody idiot!” I do respect his opinion, as he has been riding motorcycles since he was 10 years old. This was evolving into an epic riding adventure. It had been ages since I travelled over the Barrington Tops. I had forgotten how much twisting, steep dirt road there was (about 96kms). How many roaming cattle, kanga bloody roos and other wild life bouncing around, cattle grids, dingo gates and fallen trees. I did it in the dark, and the dirt road was wet and greasy from the rain. It was about then I fell off. The commuter style front tyre hit some wet clay, and down we went. We slid down the road for about 10 metres , stopping in an untidy mess with the Kymco on top of me. SHIT ! I was in the middle of buggery at night on a wet road wearing a motorcycle. The bike copped a few dents and scrapes and I copped a big dent on my ego. Point is, this sturdy little 125cc bike did the hard yards and came up trumps. Minimal damage, and we continued on into the blackness. The sun came up, and I finished the journey the next day. It had been an 'easy' ride up to Ballina, then Bryon Bay. My son rode with me part of the way on his 'huge' 600cc Hornet. Two days of riding, 850kms travelled, a 'slow' trip with time to enjoy the scenery, and not worry about being pinged for speeding, just have a bloody good ride. The Kymco has proven to be a happy little bike. I will never underestimate the joy, the sheer riding pleasure, you can get from a small capacity motorcycle. I now refer to my mini touring bike as “The Thunder Beast”. The last time I'd ridden a small capacity machine in a touring context, it was a whopping 100 per cent bigger than the Kymco… I'm looking forward to more adventures on this great little machine. – Rockwell

CYCLE TORQUE DECEMBER 2014 - 70 CYCLE TORQUE DECEMBER 2014 - 70

The big

Three Cycle Torque ‘insiders’ tell you what they thought of our long term Moto Guzzi V7 Stone. HOW sweet is this machine to ride? VERY. I might be showing my age, but this bike evokes emotions of simpler times when things, including technology and motorcycles, were so uncomplicated. The Moto Guzzi V7 is such a simple and clean piece of machinery. From that first lilting throb of the horizontally offset cylinders I loved this bike. It’s an easy bike to handle in traffic with ergonomics that will suit most riders. There’s more than enough power in the engine to fulfil its design brief whether it be for lots of commuting interspersed with weekend jaunts in the country. It will take on the freeway as easily as it will the commuter hustle. It’s a nicely balanced bike and certainly won’t intimidate riders who are stepping up to this size of bike from something smaller. In fact it will surprise you in this department. The V7 has nice handling characteristics so you won’t get any nasty surprises. If you’ve got short legs you will find that the bike is not overly tall and you’ll be able to stay safely planted when you pull up at the lights. It’s a stylish looking bike too with those dark looks. And there are lots of accessories such as panniers, carry racks, exhausts and all sorts of stuff available if you really want to put your own stamp on it. The exhaust note is nice without being too subdued. Although I was rather spoilt. I also got to ride our test bike after a set of Agostini slip-on exhausts were fitted to it - awesome. But even as it stands in standard trim it looks as nice as it goes. Sweet. – Dennis Penzo. At the time I took the long term Moto Guzzi V7 for a spin I was riding an old Suzuki GN250, and had not long come off my Provisional licence. I’ll admit I was nervous because I was thinking, ‘this bike is a 750, how will I manage it?’ I needn’t have worried because while it’s much bigger in capacity than my little 250, the V7 wasn’t that much bigger in actual size. I’m tall for a woman so reaching the ground was easy. I also liked the riding position, there was plenty of room. It took me a couple of goes to get used to the way the engine moves to the right when you revved it, and how it

needed a few revs to move off from a standstill, well at least compared to my GN250. Once I mastered that I loved riding the Moto Guzzi. It did everything right for me, had more than enough power, and I even doubled one of my daughters around for the day. For someone inexperienced in motorcycling I found the V7 easy to adapt to, and a good stepping stone from a smaller bike. Although a bit intimidated at first I quickly got comfortable with the bike and wanted to just keep riding all day. It looks tough too. – Rebecca Eastment First up I have to say I love the retro styling of the V7, and it has high bars and an upright riding position which I also like in a motorcycle. On hopping onto the bike I noticed that it had a very low seat height and that it felt extremely light despite its 179 kg weight. This meant that the bike was quite easy to manoeuvre around and I found that the position of the mirrors was perfect for the rider. This light feeling continued on the road, making it easy to manoeuvre through the heavy traffic. As I headed away from suburbia and out onto the back roads I found the suspension was more than adequate and I quickly got down to enjoying the ride with bike handling everything thrown at it. Considering the bike only has 37 kw (50 hp) I found the engine’s power was good and with peak torque coming in at a low 2,800 rpm there was no need to rev the bike out. This to me was particularly enjoyable as a lot of modern bikes need to be revved hard to get the performance out of them but with the Moto Guzzi’s torque and handling you could still get along at a quick pace if you felt the urge. The bike is also fitted with a 22 litre tank and I found that due to the bike’s frugal nature a range of over 400 km was easily possible. I was able to ride the bike before and after it was fitted with a chrome rack on the rear and an after-market exhaust system. I thought the rack blended beautifully with the bike’s styling and making the bike more capable for carrying extra gear. The exhaust note on starting up was a big surprise as I couldn’t believe how loud the bike had become. I had found the original exhaust was extremely quiet but that was certainly not the case with the new system. On the road I found that the new exhaust note was definitely a head turner but it also seemed to have a positive impact on the bike’s performance with power having increased and making the bike even more enjoyable. Overall I loved riding the bike finding it light and agile with more than adequate power to allow it to perform in the real world. The bike was fun to ride no matter the situation, whether blasting around town or out on our back country roads. The overall look of the bike reminded you of yesteryear and in the age of retro I’m sure this bike will be a big hit with the public. – D’Longie

FIRE CRACKER

AFTER months of having a cracking time on the fire breathing KTM250SX 2-stroker it was South African Grant Langston who actually got me thinking about what truly is the key feature that makes this bike so special. It was late in May and I was belting out laps at a local motocross track and having the time of my life on the KTM. Once my day was over I loaded up and got home in time to catch up with what went down at the opening round of the AMA Motocross Championships held at the famous Glen Helen circuit. Former AMA and World Motocross Champion and AMA Supercross Champion Grant Langston was on hand as the expert commentator and this observation of Jason Anderson on his KTM 250 SX-F during the opening 250 moto really got me thinking.

“If you notice with Jason Anderson, what I think is that part of his success is that maybe not everyone would say that KTM is the best bike. Everyone’s got an opinion but what he (Anderson) has figured out is that KTM has a steel frame and they flex more so he can square corners up more. I see (Ken) Roczen do the same in supercross and motocross nationals and so is Jason Anderson. Watch him, he will be able to come out of a turn, pivot out of a rut and go to a part of the track where no-one else can get to, essentially finding smoother lines.” What? Really? Jason Anderson is that smart that he knows why a steel chassis turns better that an alloy chassis while after 40 plus years of racing I had no idea? OK, I kinda knew there was a difference and have always been a fan of the KTM chassis anyway but surely it’s not that simple.

My next outing was not for another fortnight and I was ‘fizzin at the bung’ to get back out on the track to put this new found information to use and when the day came I was just about wetting myself in anticipation. Once I finally got out on the track things hadn’t changed much since my last ride. The track was well watered but the ruts, berms and lines were the same as the last time while the braking bumps and acceleration bumps were a little sharper thanks to the last couple of weeks of abuse. Funnily enough, despite the full width of a motocross track we are all guilty of following the most obvious line around but what I discovered with my new Jason Anderson/Grant Langston inspired thought process is that I didn’t have to follow the main line any more. I was able to put the KTM inside the inside line on some corners and where applicable

quite easily square up a berm to end up on the opposite side of the track of the main line. The wash up was that on a very busy motocross track with around 20 plus other riders circulating I was able to pick my way through any of the slower riders with ease and, if I am any judge, run a better pace than my last visit thanks to opening up the track by being able to accelerate and brake on smoother lines. Honestly, I can put this super light KTM 250 SX wherever I want to go, it offers absolutely no resistance to being thrown over in a corner and the speed of the 50 plus horsepower motor and the state of the art brakes and suspension is a given with KTM these days. But to have a motocross bike that does exactly as you wish is a dream come true for an old head that can no longer rely on a lot of ride time or youthful reflexes to get around at a decent rate of knots. Hallelujah! As my time on the 250 SX comes to an end I must say that living with this beast has been a breeze. I am now running Maxima Racing Oils two-stroke oil at 40:1 ratio with standard pump fuel (not the denser 98 octane). Jetting wise I dropped the needle into the carby by one clip, made sure the air/screw was set at one and a half screws out with the standard main jet and the motor is easy to start and crisp from idle to full revs. On the open super bumpy circuit I have been playing with the suspension settings but in the end I am most comfortable with the settings I mentioned in the last update.

It wouldn’t be a KTM without WP suspension.

For what it’s worth I honestly believe the advantage is not garnered in the 2-stroke motor, it is in the handling advantage that I have highlighted above. The 2-stroke is back and no-one knows that better than KTM! With a heavy heart I hand the 2014 KTM 250 SX back but I have a new respect for what KTM has done with this machine and I take my hat off to the likes of Caleb Ward who can ride the wheels off one of these things and ride it to its full potential. n

QUAD TORQUE CYCLE TORQUE TEST - KAWASAKI KVF-750 4X4I

AGRI-POWER

WHEN you look at the specs sheet and read other tests on this ATV, the screaming bullet point is that 750cc engine, but this machine proved it is more than a one trick pony. The liquid cooled, fuel injected, 90 degree v-twin pumps out 37kw (@ 6750rpm) and 59Nm of torque (@5750 rpm). It’s a thumb full of power as quads go, but the rest of the features read more like what is on offer for the average car. Power steering is a common feature on modern ATVs and Kawasaki has fitted a variable system that is designed to be lighter at low speeds (or in 4WD) and firmer at high speeds, providing more stability over bumps. Speaking of 4WD, it is easily engaged via a switch on the handle bars. Suspension is fully independent for a smoother ride and is adjustable for preload. The whole chassis came in for an update, with an improved steering column and rear stabilisers fitted. Cast aluminium wheels complete the visual look and also help with weight control while the overall visual styling is clean and practical, making it ready to adapt to a wide range of applications. Round it out with diff lock, improved transmission and an enclosed wet rear brake and you have a very capable ATV that certainly offers more that just pure power.

The ride

Over the course of a few weeks several people had a ride on the Brute Force 750 over a wide range of terrain with the ride impressions all consistently very positive. One of the things that really impressed me was not so much the engine - I expected that to be good - but it was the way the chassis and

Alloy wheels are standard.

CVT system works seamlessly.

suspension handled that power. There is no feeling of being too top heavy - the bike offers a really well balanced ride and the handlebars are at a comfortable height. Tough terrain is where the Brute Force absolutely lit it up, launching the bike in the air at will and just smashing through any rough ground. The suspension is said to be firmer than previous models and it did feel that way - the rougher it got, the happier the big Kawasaki performed. On the downhill sections decent control is effective and certainly more pronounced in low range. It is probably not as apparent as other ATVs due to the twin cylinder configuration - look through the specs and you will see most manufacturers opt for a large single cylinder engine - meaning there is greater compression. And what of that huge powerplant? It is everything you would expect of a Kawasaki... smooth, linear power and lots of it. As I said previously, the combination of chassis, transmission and running gear means you can harness that power with no problem at all. If you don’t think power steering is necessary on an ATV, then you need to take a test ride on one of these. In 4WD it was so light and easy to handle making it a standout feature for me. A touch firmer at high speeds would have been good. Overall, completely effortless with a nice tight turning circle. All the running gear appears to be very well protected and covered which means you should have minimal mechanical issues with the

Says it all really.

running gear (which is why they state an enclosed wet rear brake as a feature). I also liked the spread of the front headlights, I think it definitely increases visibility in the dark (yes I did test that!), but I really want to see turn indicators fitted for registration.

Verdict

Kawasaki has proven again to me that it has the goods when it comes to engineering. I have no doubt Kawasaki could have made this quad even better, but budget has to play a part, and what it has managed to squeeze into the $12,999 price tag is pure quality. The power is a standout for sure - but I think most agricultural buyers look just as much for stability and good handling. If you read the Kawasaki marketing material everything it nominates as a feature is genuinely noticeable and worthwhile. In my opinion, the big Kawasaki delivers beyond the obvious highlight of the engine, so if you are looking for a machine that can adapt to most applications Brute Force is well worth checking out. – Matt O’Connell

Suspension is amazing.

Power plus.

Crash Control

I WAS watching the MotoGP held at Phillip Island and saw one of the racers have quite a bad fall. I heard one of the commentators mention the rider’s airbag suit would have gone off, and the reason why he was able to walk away from the crash relatively unscathed. My question is, did I hear correctly, that MotoGP riders wear an airbag suit under their leathers? If so, do you know the name and address of such a manufacturer? I congratulate you on putting out a world class magazine, I especially enjoyed the tribute you wrote to Bill Morris. Keep up the very good work. – John Hosking Hi John, those airbag systems in race leathers can be purchased but probably more down the route you want is something from Hit Air, an Australian company that does a variety of jackets with air bags installed. These range from full jackets to a vest type arrangement, which goes over your existing jacket. I’m sure they will have something to suit what you want. You can contact them via their website, www. hitairaustralia.com or call them on 02 9540 1500. Ed.

Social lubricant

ARE motorbikes the ultimate social lubricant? I’ve been riding bikes for a couple of years now, and my enthusiasm is not waning. In fact I’ve just bought another bike. What sort you say? Well this is a common starting point for conversations with complete strangers, and

K C A B I G N I U Q TO R phenomenon I’ve not noticed so much outside the motorcycling community. Last weekend I was out riding (wife riding pillion) and crossed the ferry over the Murray river. The ferry driver randomly starts talking with me. Typical starting line, “is that the 1100?”. Then onto, “where you headed”, “went into Stirling myself this morning”, “great day for a ride”, and so on. A couple of weeks ago I was at a cafe enjoying a cuppa with my wife and a guy rode up on his bike and stopped for a coffee. I asked what model it was (RZ) and therein started the conversation. A little later it was, “mind if I join you”, and 20 minutes later we had to leave after an enjoyable conversation with a fellow hills dweller covering bikes (of course), arts, and life in general. I’d be tempted to think that behind this might simply be shared common interest, but it seems more than that. Perhaps it’s common interest combined with absence of risk aversion? Perhaps the adrenaline of the ride and a wish to share the joy it brings. Whatever the cause the lubrication of social interaction is a welcome phenomenon in a world where we shun real life interaction in favour of so called virtual interactions. Give me a bike and a conversation anytime. – Paul Grace

Catch Up

Smarty, I worked in Mt Isa from 1984 to 1987 and played in the Saints Aussie Rules FC team under your dad as coach in 84/85. I enjoyed your article on Lagoon Park in the Nov Cycle Torque and have a couple of memories myself. The first was watching you race on the MX track in the Nth Queensland Champs against Buster Ward, your chief rival for the title I seem to recall. I remember Paul racing as well trying to position himself between you

LETTERS

and Buster to give you a hand. The second memory was of me and mate “gate crashing” the MX track one evening for a hoon on a couple of trail bikes. Next minute, there’s a crazy dude with wild eyes and a shock of red hair (Alan Rubach ???) chasing us around the track in his FJ40 SWB landcruiser. The guy was going nuts at us and trying to take us out so we made rapidly for the exit. Good times. Pass on my regards to Bob and Paul. All the best. – Charlie Fearon

No Guff

I ENJOY reading your magazine as it does not carry on with a lot of the guff, which I have noticed in other bike mags. While reading Race Torque in the September issue I noticed that a large number of abbreviations (at least 15) were used throughout the article. These abbreviations included such things as; ASBK, ASC, OS, AGP, MRRDA, ARRC, BSB, WSBK, FIM, CCR, MSMA, MA, CAMS, AVESCO. Some of these are easily recognisable but others I could not even find their meaning using the internet. While we all use abbreviations at times, I ask that the first time an abbreviation or acronym is used in an article, the true meaning be printed so we can all understand what the journalist is trying to get across to the reader. Understanding these is even more difficult for the young who are trying to learn more about motorcycling and the enjoyment we get from it. I would like to thank you for producing such an interesting and enjoyable magazine. – Ken Davidson Good point Ken, we’ll keep an eye on it in the future. Ed.
