CF MOTO’S 500 and 600cc X-Lander utility ATVs offer a much higher build quality and performance than their budget prices would have you think. Not only are they both equipped with a stunning array of standard fitment accessories, they are also very capable machines which we believe will have the brand becoming a solid player in the ATV market in the near future. For years now farmers have seen the ATV light. Not only are they light and manoeuvrable, they are also cheaper to maintain, and buy new, compared to a 4WD car. The Japanese brands have long held this segment of the market as their own, but American, and now other Asian brands are making real inroads into the Japanese stranglehold. The American brands do it by quality and big capacity engines, while the other Asian brands are doing it by price. But is it as simple as this? No, the top level non Japanese Asian companies are working extremely hard at matching the build quality of the other brands, but still keeping their prices low.

pretentions but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun on them. Essentially they are both the same size physically. 1490mm wheelbase, 2300mm long, 1180mm wide and a seat height of 550mm. Ground clearance is a handy 275mm and both weigh in at 358kg dry. Both have a fuel capacity of 19 litres. The 500cc version has a liquid-cooled single cylinder four-stroke engine with four valves and a Mikuni carb getting the fuel/air mixture in. Getting it started is by button, although there’s a pull start if the battery goes flat. A CVT auto transmission gets it rolling, with high, low and reverse gears available via the T-bar shifter. 2 or 4WD, and diff lock is selected by the buttons on the right switch block. Engine wise the 600 gets 100 extra cc by an 8.5mm bigger bore but it also gets Bosch fuel injection. Where the 500 has 35hp, the 600 makes two more. The real boost is the extra torque, 46.9nm compared to 38.8. You can feel the difference
between the two engines. While the 500 is a revvier unit with more snap, the bigger 600 motor feels smoother, no doubt due to the fuel injection, and has more torque off the bottom. Adjustable independent suspension is fitted front and rear, coil spring oil damped shocks. They have minimum adjustment but you can tailor it to suit your type of use and load requirements. We put both X-Landers through a serious test track and found the suspension fine. Not once could you fault it in the slow stuff. We also gave them some stick over broken ground and once again the independent suspension performed well. Disc brakes live front and rear, twin discs up front while the rear has a centrally mounted single disc. You operate the front discs by the right brake lever, while the rear brake is operated either by a left handlebar mounted lever or foot brake; we preferred using the foot brake. At slow speeds the brakes had plenty of feel, but emergency stops from

The tricky stuff

In 2WD the X-Landers will go pretty much anywhere. Sure, you’ll get wheelspin and action but as with all capable ATVs it’s only when the going gets really rough that you need 4WD. Momentum will get you up most places but in very tight and technical terrain 4WD is a must. When we selected 4WD and put it in low, both X-Landers felt unstoppable. This was only more reinforced when we got the diff lock into the action as well. The only aspect of the diff lock not so great is its tendency to want to go straight on. This is a trait we’ve found with all diff locks we’ve tested but they are such a great tool it’s hard to imagine owning a serious utility quad without this option. This allows

With most park brakes you flick it over to get the brake activated. On the X-Lander this lever flips over to also block the throttle, keeping young riders away from inadvertently or otherwise getting the throttle on if it’s parked in gear. On the 600 you also get air shocks, hand guards and a trailer connector to get
the trailer lights working.
Verdict
We think the question on the lips of most ATV buyers is reliability. Sure, they look the business and work well when new but will they last? In many eyes the non Japanese Asian brands have to prove themselves. What many consumers don’t know is that plenty of mainstream manufacturers get parts, engines and even complete bikes made in China, Taiwan, Korea and Thailand, so these countries are quite capable of producing quality products. It all depends on the particular company. If you take a good look at the CF Moto X-Landers you can’t help but be impressed with the build quality. If you take one for a ride you will be further impressed. We can’t give you a guarantee but CF Moto importer Mojo Motorcycles will. The company has been around for a number of years, importing a number of motorcycle brands, and is standing by its products, giving a two-year parts and labour warranty. That’s as good as you will get anywhere. For us the 500 felt more fun to ride than the 600 but essentially it will come down to requirements. If you live in cold climates you might prefer the easier starting in such conditions of the fuel injected 600cc unit. Are you ready for this? The X-Lander 500’s rrp is $6,990, and the 600 is $7,990.
