All District Riders:
Renew your memberships now! The Cycle USA magazine is one of your special membership benefits, and only renewed 2015 members will continue to get issues after the first few come out. From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman By the time you read this our season will be underway. With luck we will have cooperative weather in April and May of this year. Having just finished clearing another 10 inches of snow I am definitely ready to get back on 2 wheels. The early March reprieve was a nice break and many us did get in some saddle time. I will never get tired of the feeling one gets with the first ride of the year. All the stiffness and soreness the next day feels good. No matter how much time one works out during the winter that first ride will still make you feel it for a few days. Once again I want to take a moment to thank all of the businesses and companies that sponsor our district events. A special thank you to Fly Racing as they once again have stepped up with an extremely generous package. Check our website for instructions on how to apply for Fly Bucks. We will also be awarding them to racers in all of our disciplines through out the season. These are the same as cash certificates that can be used at Fly dealers or through the Fly website. This is a huge package and I can’t thank them enough for this level of support. Watch for them at all of the Outdoor Pro Nationals as they are the official sponsor of that great series too. We have been working on our district budget for that last few months now. We have not increased our membership fee in over 15 years. It is our goal to keep that fee from increasing. While there are never any guarantees it is our chief goal to keep our membership cost at its current level. At the same time we are planning on making some changes to our year-end awards. Along with the usual jacket for the winners of the championship classes we are looking at coming up with something similar for the winners of the B and C classes. We looking at several different types of apparel for the various awards. We are open to

suggestions from our members. One thing in particular we are looking for is an ideal award for our youth classes. We would really like to come up with something they can wear to school all day and show off to their friends. Be it a quarter nip polo or specially designed jersey we are looking for input on what they would wear and show off proudly. All of the particulars have not been worked out yet but if any of you out there know of a supplier or designer that would like to volunteer some ideas we would really appreciate it. Please get back to us with some fresh ideas. Contact Owen Riess or Angela Johns with your feedback. Business is progressing as usual right now. We are exploring a few new ideas for a couple of big prizes to be awarded at our year-end recognition ceremony. Stay tuned for more on this as the season progresses. The biggest issue facing us as a district and a sport right now is growth. We really need some growth in our membership. An increase in membership will definitely reinforce our financial position as an organization, but more importantly give us more clout on the political scene. We continue to monitor legislative actions and proposals via our lobbyist. To date he has kept us ahead of the game, we need to continue this trend into future. That is really all the business in a nutshell for now. See you at the tracks and on the trails of Minnesota. Mike Youth Riders race for FREE! The Norsemen Motorcycle Club announces FREE entry to all their events in the 2015 season for all Youth Cross Country Series classes and youth TT classes. Classes include Micro, Macro, PeeWee, Premier and Girls. Tell your friends and neighbors! This is an effort to allow families an opportunity to afford a fun day at the races. The family atmosphere at Enduros, Hare Scrambles, and TT events is something we are very proud of and this is an effort to allow more families to experience it. Mike Bauer showing just how good the Canadian screws hook up.
Racing for a cause in West Bend Annual event benefits Big Brothers/ Big Sisters West Bend, Wisconsin - February 8 By Gordon Lunde
A
s an annual event, this race is becoming one of the hot competitions to attend, for both participants and spectators. It’s a fundraiser for Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Washington County, and a great time for all. Most of the area’s fastest ice riders show up for the races, and put one hell of good a show on. JR Schnabel, Benny Carlson, Jesse Janisch, John Stuart and more turn out to display their finesse and insanity on these ice shaving two wheelers. The event is held at Pier 144 on the west end of Wallace Lake, just north of West Bend, WI on Hwy 144. Along with a nice bar and libations to keep spectators warm, there is a fire pit on the deck and the local snowmobile club provides burgers, brats and hot dogs cooked on an open grill. 6
CYCLE USA, April 2015
This year’s event was changed to allow both of the popular ice racing tire setups to be used with fairness. There are two types of ice screws used to build the tires for these machines. The AMA sanctioned ice screw which is 3/8 inches tall, hex head, dished and slot cut type sheet metal type screw. This is the screw/ tire setup used for many years in AMA sanctioned events. Some years ago the folks north of the border decided they needed something a bit more aggressive for riding on the frozen lakes and came up with a taller screw with an added nib on top that helps dig deeper through the snow and shaved ice to get better traction. These are popularly known as Canadian screws. It is readily apparent when both types of screws are used in the same race, as the rider with Canadian screws will dominate.
Marc Ottenad ran off to a fifth place finish.
Janisch was in the seat. Having to be towed in to the pits from the back side of the track cost them precious time. However, once back on track, they set a terrific pace and got back into third place by the finish. Schnabel also had a moment while signaling for a pit stop. He lost control, hit a snow bank and went over the handlebars. Fortunately he was unhurt, remounted, and didn’t lose any positions. He did get a standing ovation from all that witnessed it! It’s great racing, a great charity to raise funds for, and a good time for all every year at Pier144.
adam greenwood put in a bunch of good laps for fourth.
The Canadian screws provide so much more “bite” and traction than the AMA screws. Two separate races were held, one with AMA screws and the other for Canadian screws. Each event was 1½ hours in length. The AMA event was started with fiftysix bikes on the grid, separated into four different classes; Lightweight, Middleweight, Heavyweight and Iron Man. The three weight classes may use two-four rider teams, taking turns on the bike, while the Iron Man class is ridden by one rider. For safety the classes are divided at the start, but they are scored as one group for final results. There are no class winners, only an overall winner for each race. Also, being a charity event, there are no trophies or awards, just the knowledge for the teams that they have helped a great organization just by participating in these races. Jacob Wiedmeyer, in the AMA Iron Man class, took the overall honors aboard his 328 Powersports A machine. There was a great battle all race long between Wiedmeyer, Ben Carlson, Jr Schnabel, Jameson Duclos and Adam Greenwood. Pit stops and rider changes altered the positions over the length of the race, but this group stayed on the same lap all the way. Over an hour and a half they completed twenty-five laps of the winding three plus mile track. In the Canadian race, JR Schnabel on the Action Powersports bike did the Iron
Man class and won over his AMA class teammate Ben Carlson, who was riding this race with Sean Lentz. Thirty-nine machines and riders started the Canadian race with thirty-two of them finishing. Mechanical gremlins seemed to be the biggest culprit for teams not completing the race. Jesse Janisch and Jeremy DeRuyter were running well until the bike ran out of fuel while

Motokazie ‘14 Awards Banquet
Motokazie’s 2014 Motocross champions

T
he 2014 Motokazie season came to a close with the annual banquet at the Park Ballroom. Friends and family from Iowa to Wisconsin and of course Minnesota came to celebrate the achievements of riders young and old. Motokazie handed out 150 awards to riders who completed either the Motokazie Motocross Series or the Motokazie Supercross Series, and some who competed in both! The 2014 Motokazie Motocross Series consisted of ten races between the Kellogg MX facility and the Mankato MX facility. Series highlights included a Pro/Am at the Kellogg facility, and two successful events at the rider favorite Mankato MX track. In 2015, watch for some track improvements at Kellogg and three races at Mankato. Kellogg MX will again feature a Pro/Am in May, Quads included in the June 7th race, and the family favorite, Labor Day weekend races. The Motokazie Supercross Series featured eighteen races in 2014, eight of
which were at the home track of Motokazie Supercross, Jordan, MN. The travelling Supercross races stretched from Alexandria, MN, to Manchester, IA to Tomah, WI. The Jordan track featured its second annual Mid-Season championship with prizes for each class winner, an extra pro purse, holeshot awards, and fun activities. The 2015 series will include sixteen races stretching across the Upper Midwest, including the Mid Season Championship at Jordan in July.
The Motokazie Banquet is also a time to feature the Team Motokazie riders. Team Motokazie was started in 2002 as a way for Motokazie to give something back to the riders. Team members are featured in the Motokazie Event program, receive a t-shirt, stickers, and discounts on Motokazie events. Team membership also includes an end of the season award for the highest points earners. In 2014 Kaleb Carmen of Rochester, MN, won two titles and earned 748

Jeff Doege of Shakopee, MN, won four titles and earned 805 points, competing in the supercross classes 450B and 15-29 Open; and motocross classes Open B and 14-24B. The highest points earner for 2014 was Austin Kristiansen of Le Center, MN. Austin earned 880 points, won two titles, and competed in Motokazie’s 2014 supercross champions the supercross classes 85cc National Guard, Ace Trailer Sales, 7-11 and Open 80-105cc; and motocross Strider, Coates RV, Unlimited Motorclasses 85cc 9-11 and 85cc 9-12. sports, UFC Farm Supply, Talkin’ Moto Motokazie would like to thank their Podcast, Vaith’s Cycle, Motorex, Kato 2014 sponsors: Ziegler Cat, Minnesota Insurance, 4 MX Graphics, Pro-Action

an Luchon of Wauwatosa, WI, finally, after 20 years of trying won the Vintage class at the Otter Street ice races. For two decades Dan has been racing, tweaking, changing his 1973 Triumph T140v to attempt to get it to the front of the class on the last lap. This year, with some suspension
changes, he battled hard with Terry Vestahl and Joe Stoppleworth for the victory. Every lap these three racers changed positions, sometimes running three wide through the corners. It was a great race and a life long memory for Luchon, who also won the class heat race. In 450 class action, Parker Lange, riding the Moose/ Bell Helmets/ Millenium Technologies/ Murre Salvage sponsored Honda, ran strong to the win over Jacob Jesko on his 450

Honda. Close racing every lap saw the lead change several times. DJ Slosser also got in the mix aboard his CR500 Honda but settled for third in the event. The 250 class put on a great show for the several hundred spectators that came out for the Otter Street Fishing Club’s annual event, as the races were organized by the SST’s. Again Lange and Jesko had a hard fought race with Sonny Johnson and Mike Grapentine mixing it up. This time it was Jesko taking the win on his Chad Pergande sponsored 250 Yamaha with Johnson in second and Lange third.

Pat Bean stole the show in the Senior class aboard his Donahue Super Sports

Zwirchilz in Quad A action. Zack ran away with his heat race and the final, pulling wheelies on the back straight and coming out of turn four on one wheel. Stars of Tomorrow Flat-Track Series Peoria Motorcycle Club, October 25, 2014 From Brien Fell
I
n 2014 a group of AMA District 17 motorcycle organizations combined resources to promote a nine race flat-track series with a goal to “re-energize and support the sport”. The group consisted of the following organizations: Central Illinois M/C, Galesburg M/C, Lamoine Ramblers M/C, Pekin M/C, and Peoria M/C. The series would not

have been made possible without the help of our sponsors: Roy Keith Electric of Farmington, IL, Cupi’s Motor Mall of Pekin, IL, Huey’s Home Medical, Inc., Spectro Performance Oils, and Chris Carr of Golden Tyre. Racers qualified for series awards by racing at least one time at each of five clubs’ events with all participants receiving an event TShirt. Out of a nine race schedule, they needed to race at least five times. In the end, since Peoria Motorcycle Club had to cancel twice due to rain, racers only had to race four times. Quad races were held by three of the five clubs, so quad racers had to race at least three times once with each club. Participants celebrated their series with a banquet hosted by The Peoria Motorcycle Club at their club grounds on October 25th, 2014.
For racers who qualified, they received: Hoodie Sweatshirts with their name and class. Plaque with class and finish position. $50 Gift Certificate for Light Shoe brand steel racing shoe. $50 Gas Card from Casey’s and $50 Casey’s gift card. Spectro Oil. In addition, class champions got a custom “Stars” #1 number plate. 250 Amateur and 450 Amateur classes - a set of Golden Tyre racing tires. stars of Tomorrow Flat-Track series Finals: 50cc shaft: 1.Mason Brock 2.Konnor Copelen 3.Carson Robinson 50cc Chain: 1.Declan Bender 2.Jacob Cecil 3.Tyler Tidwell 65cc: 1.Parker Robinson 2.Declan Bender 3.Tyler Tidwell 85cc: 1. anquet time is always special, and even more so at a District level. This is a time when rider accomplishments are recognized, and in a special setting with all the other competitors, families, and friends coming together in one place. Having all the divisions together shows just how diverse, and special this group is. Riders of every age, and from many backgrounds spend the season competing. Each event is special on its own, but chasing a year-end award is a significant dedication. The reward is just as special. All season long you do what you love, with the people you most often enjoy being around the most. Do enough of it, find some success, and you put yourself in position to go home with a beautiful plaque, a jacket, and after

a moment on the stage with your fellow riders, a moment you’ll remember forever. The memories are what this is really all about. District 17’s President, and lifelong rider pointed out that over 500 riders and family members were in attendance, just how cool is that! “How else could we better celebrate our 40th anniversary year... 40 years of District 17 racing and organized events. With the big turnout and the enthusiastic crowd, it is certain to be a great 2015 season!” Long time Motocross and Stadium Motocross Director Gerhard Ward thoroughly enjoys being a big part of putting on the annual banquet. Ward, “The year-end banquet held at the Pitsticks Pavillion this year was a pleasant surprise. In the day and age of big events, and over hyped circumstances it was very nice to see the participation in the overall district award presentations. New for this season was multiple projectors with riders photos being streamed on the screens during dinner and the awards presentation. Alex Moss and Garrett Ward again this year
played the National Anthem. The boys did a good job again this year. Interesting that this year has shown more and more “multiple type” award winners. District 17 with it’s wide variety of racing, riders no longer are simply doing the same things week in and week out. Over twenty riders had awards in things like motocross and gp, or trials and hare scrambles. Even a good portion of this group were stadium mx riders. Kids are demanding more and more “fun” things to do and it is showing in their accomplishments. Motocross went first with a good showing of kids which is great to see, our sport only survives with the new kids coming in. You can tell they haven’t seen each other in a long time as they spent many hours just hanging out, doing what kids do today. Sitting next to each other texting, playing on there electronic devices looking up once and while speaking to the kid next to them about how cool the game is. Noteable recognition goes out to Andy Mueller with most likely the largest total events and motos ridden this season. Riding all the tracks and often was a goal, and he achieved it well. At the same time the moto awards were being done the staggered setup was working with the hare scrambles crew on the stage with their presentations. Riders and families alike
all smiles after cashing in on the 50/50 raffle. CYCLE USA, April 2015

Multiple class winners like Mikah Carpenter, the Zoller kids, and Nolan Dickinson were all here to receive thier well earn awards. Even though the season was a rough one for the clubs and tracks in 2014, the spirits were high in
anticipation of the up coming season. If racing in 2015 is going to resemble that enthusiasm which was displayed at the banquet, it should be a very good year, and a whole lot of fun. Ryan Moss, The GP Director, “Thanks to all the riders and families that came to the banquet! It was a pleasure to hand out the awards and see everyone doing some
bench racing during this cold winter. The GP Championship series is now in its fourth season and things are starting to really come around. Clubs are getting into their grove when it comes to laying out the GP courses, and riders are realizing how fun the events are. District 17 has a good class structure, and with all this coming together the rider turnouts were up, and

new clubs are coming on board for the 2015 season. In short, Gran Prix Racing equals fun. Giving riders a mix of different disciplines along with shorter days and more ride time. Gran Prixs offer the some of the intensity of a motocross, but less air time. They offer trails without the need to have brushguards. And as a bonus some events offer grass track sections and or endurocross obstacles. The typical Gran Prix moto is 20-25 minutes and you get two motos per class. The class structure is setup similar to other disciplines with A, B, C and some age
classes so you are competing with like ability riders. Plus the class order is arranged where most riders can get in two classes and have at least one moto break between classes. Come and try a Gran Prix, you won’t be disappointed. 2014 had some great battles and even battles between riders from different disciplines. In the 122-Open class you had hare scramble rider Travis Ward battling with motocross rider Ryan Smith all season. In the end Ward took the win. In the 14-29 class Smith battled with enduro rider Blake Ryan and in the end Smith took the championship. 65cc class motocrosser Gavin Sienkiewicz and hare scramble/ trials rider Chasen Orme fought all year with Sienkiewicz taking the championship. The Women’s class saw some the tightest points battle of all. With Gretchen Orme and Autumn Franklin it all came down to the last race and Franklin did what she had to do and got the win, but Orme finished the race despite injury and that gave Orme the championship.” Ryan Moss also is the District’s Director for Enduro events, and said it was a good season there as well. Moss, “The 2014 Enduro season saw 10 events on the schedule this year and the series got to travel to many different places and all those places had varied terrains to challenge even the best riders. We saw some great events and battles, thanks to all the clubs for putting the events on and to the riders for making it a great season. Our Grand Champion was a repeat of
last year with Anthony Krivi taking the title. Anthony proved that last year was no fluke, and put in strong rides all season long to take two overall wins. Rumor is that Anthony is taking a year off from enduros so it leaves the Grand Champion spot wide open for 2015. In the 250A class young gun Bren Raschke battled the more “experienced” Rob McGee all season and came out away with the win. With Bren and Rob pushing themselves they finished within the top five overall for the season, welcome to AA class guys. In the Senior A class Matt Adams and Eric Shafer exchanged wins all season, in the end Matt Adams took the win. The Super Sr class had three riders going for the win and it came down to the last race to see who would get the title. Tony Robinson took the win for the day and the Championship with Tim Graf in second and Paul Biggerstaff third. In the 200B class young gun Blake Ryan showed he was the rider to beat, and finished first or second in every race he entered. This gave him the series championship and he was also the Overall B champion for the year. The District 17 Randy Hatcher Sportsman Award went master pit man Tom Krivi. Tom is the father of Anthony Krivi and is always at the events helping. Tom doesn’t just help his son, but many other riders, whether he knows them or not. Tom’s willingness to help others, and his constant smile makes him a very deserving recipient of this award. There are a couple class changes for the

2015 season: The 200B and 250B classes will be combined this year. Super Sr will be broken into A and B. An increase in participation in this class warranted a class split. We hope both of these changes work well for riders and clubs as well as the series overall.” We asked Hare Scrambles Director Jay

Hall to re-cap some of what stood out with his events following the season. Hall, “2014 was a fight from the start with Mother Nature beating on us in the spring and early summer but clubs show there perseverance and pushed through it all. Also the same with the riders showing their support for D-17 HS by showing up
ready to race. We had some good races weather wise too, but... the hard fought races, muddy or dry is what we all talked about at the annual banquet. In talking about last year, only three months ago we all waiting for this cold weather to end, and get back to rubbing the trees and have fun in what we do. Old and young seem to have that sparkle waiting for that first race. 2014 had a couple of other things to talk about. This was District 17’s 40th year Anniversary, and you think back about the bikes and riders that have been doing this. Bikes that had 4” of travel and names of Ossa and Bultaco that are gone, and often forgotten. And all the D17 riders that have had their awards and wore their jackets out, but keep wearing them because they are very proud of what they’ve done. You ask how do I know this, well this was my 40th year of racing Dist.17! I’ve had so many friends though the years I could not count, and the funny thing is I made a few more this past year as well. This is why we do this - not only for the competition, but also the HS bunch is like a second family to many of its racers. The 2014 awards banquet went well with good food, door prizes and some good photos being shown on the wall. The top winner of the HS season was our AA rider Kyleer Vance, as he edged out another strong runner Austin Wells in a hard fought battle. It was good to see that our sport is growing with all the C classes growing like they are, and to have the kind of turn out in the +30C class, with Casey Shatters taking top spot beating out Nathan Ming.... nice job guys and all the C class riders coming into the sport. There are so many we could talk about, we have to say congratulations to all, but we do have to talk about one more rider. Well, ok, family of racers Brian Roland and his wife Kristy and their kids. Every time it came to getting an award one of the kids where coming up, or dad or mom. Man they wore some tires out this year... nice job and its good to see a family like this racing together. Tammy, Jarred and myself would like to say see you at the races, and have a great 2015.” Next, we spoke with Mike Bender, your new District 17 Dirt Track Director. Mike has filled the position of Stan Camp, a long time volunteer for D17. Thank you Stan for all your years supporting dirt track! Mike had this to add about 2014. “It was a great year for Dirt Track racing in District 17. Many are not aware, but we CYCLE USA, April 2015

of awards given out... and every, and I mean everyone having a good time. All smiles, good food... it was loud with conversation, and reminiscing. A perfect evening no doubt. If you’re not getting this involved in the sport, you are missing out. Dedicate yourself to chasing this, and you’ll never regret having done so. Hopefully we will see you at the banquet in January of 2016!

are fortunate to host some of the best tracks in the nation and several of our clubs are steeped in Flat Track history. This year saw the return of two venues that were once regulars on the AMA GNC circuit - the Henry and Jerseyville Half Miles. 2014 also marked the inaugural season for the Stars of Tomorrow Flat Track Series. The series was conceived by several of our clubs - Peoria Motorcycle Club, Pekin Motorcycle Club, Lamoine Ramblers Motorcycle Club, Galesburg Motorcycle Club and Central Illinois Motorcycle Club. Its purpose is to continue developing and promoting the mass of young talent within our District. This series runs within our normal district schedule, so make sure to come out and support or participate with us. The racing this year was fantastic, with a number of key battles between some of the nation’s best riders. D17 has long been known for producing some of the top talent in the country. This year was no exception, producing a total of 21 National titles from riders such as Jake Fell, Kash Schnowske, Declan Bender, Carson Robinson and Dallas Daniels- finalist for the AMA Youth Rider of the Year award. Locally, the 250, 450 and Open Amateur classes were always crowd pleasers with
great battles occurring between Kolton Featherston, Jake Fell and Cole Zabala. Remember these names because we’ll be seeing them on the GNC grids in the near future. Last but not least, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention 2014 was a sad farewell to our long time Director Stan Camp. Stan served our district proudly for many years… Stan, you will definitely be missed!! Now on to 2015… Join us out there and let’s make it another fantastic season!! See you at the track!” To say it was a fantastic night would be an understatement. Roughly five hours of over 500 like-minded people together in the off-season, hundreds CYCLE USA, April 2015

CWIRA Dexterville Championship Dexterville, Wisconsin - February 15
C
old weather re-appeared just in time for the weekend of the Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association’s annual State Championship event held in Dexterville, WI. The Sunday event saw some sunshine and temps above zero, but not by much. After a nearly flawless season of good ice, today’s race continued the trend. Even with the AMA Nationals running in Madison, and pulling a few entries from this event, there was still 180 entries as riders following this series are very a very loyal bunch. After practice some extra prep time was put in on the oval to get it just right. Then it was time for racing, both on that oval and the small GP course, and no one spectating was disappointed. A couple GP classes kicked it all off, before the program returned to running on the oval only. Kenny Gruber took his Yamaha to both moto wins in the Pro/Am GP bike class. Then in the Open Amateur class, Corey Schroeder took the early lead in the first moto. Black River Fall’s Dave Jelinek ran in second, holding off Jack Potter to the end. In the second moto Potter took the lead off the start but Schroeder quickly made a pass. Maybe riding a little too hard on the slippery tight stuff, Schroeder went down, dropping back to fourth. Potter was glad to take over the lead. Jelinek kept Potter’s attention through each lap before they crossed the finish line. Potter took the overall (3-1) as Jelinek’s two runner-up finishes put him in second overall. In the Quad AM GP race, Tyler Martin had his hands full with Graham Eichmiller pushing him through the first lap. As they started the second lap, Eichmiller came into one of the tight corners a little hot and spun out, dropping back a couple spots. Eichmiller came right back, passing Austin Gettinger and Colin Wilcott as they went into the last lap. Now in third, he took a run at Nick Nett, but ran out of time as Martin took the win. Eichmiller figured everything out between motos, and led everyone in the second moto. Austin Gettinger ran in second for a while, but slipped back as Martin was the first to pass him. Nett worked into third at the end. Eichmiller’s win definitely helped him redeem himself after the first moto mistake, but Martin’s consistent 1-2 motos was plenty good for the overall. A class that gets a lot of attention from 24

the spectators is filled by the youth riders in PeeWee Quad B. Today there were eight in the class, and Emma Schlough led them all through the first lap. Levi Rogers was charging in second, but even with all the efforts, he couldn’t make anything stick on Schlough. Meantime, coming back from a terrible start, little Ashley Lindner was picking a rider off at every opportunity. Making her last pass in the final turns, she finished third, just ahead of Douglas Wildes. Rogers was on fire in the second moto, jumping into the lead right away. Schlough and Lindner were right there, and looking
for an advantage all through the race. Rogers pulled a little out of the corners, and that was enough to ice the moto win for the overall. With it being as cold as it was, a lot of the big, and or fastest classes were split into extra heats to reduce the number of riders on the ice at one time... allowing the best of them to face off in finals later in the day. In the Open Pro motorcycle class, heat one saw Kenny Gruber fight his way to the front. Each lap, Mitchel Rush was taking his stabs at the lead, and finally with the white flag out, he ran hard to the inside one more time. Going into turn three Rush
Pro class riders head to the line. #31 Bryan smetana, #36 soren laValley, #39 Brian Frandsen and #16 russell Bradley
pushed his KTM under Gruber, getting an edge. Gruber came right back at him, but finished second by half a wheel. In the second heat, there was another close race that again lasted to the finish line. Soren La Valley, Jamie Hanson and Russell Bradley were in a three way drag race that lasted through each lap. LaValley got the best of it right at the end, setting the stage for a what would be the first final later in the afternoon. As action filled as the heat races were, the outcome in the main was much simpler. Rush had his KTM out front off the start, and he never looked back as Frandsen was glued to him, but not able to get quite close enough for a pass attempt. After Gruber’s first heat race win, he ran in third, sort of sneaking around quietly until the last lap. Then he kicked it up a gear and caught a surprised Frandsen to take second away. Bradley finished fourth with La Valley fifth. The fast, and aggressive guys in the non-studded quad classes usually provide a lot of the best racing at any CWIRA event. In today’s Pro-Am Rubber class, heat one, Corbin Kostyn led the way. Devin Borski was charging and moved up to second on the second lap, then eventually as he was going for the lead on the last lap, out of what seemed like nowhere, Alex Volovsek joined the battle. In three turns Volovsek went from third to leading, and then stealing the win as the three riders swapped positions a couple times in the last half a lap.... typical excitement

2014 Awards Night in Casey Casey, Illinois - January 17 By James Pinckard
R
ichards Farm restaurant in Casey, IL hosted the awards night for the 2014 racing season of the Fly Showdown Series, the Crossroads and the Lincoln Trail Motosports Track Championships. This year they also gave out the 100 Percent Club awards for those who attended and raced every event in each series. The riders and their families were welcomed to a large room with tables full of awards as well as tables full of moto swag to hand out to lucky event goers. There were racing banners on the wall that they also gave away at the end of the night. Racers and families not only enjoyed the awards and great food, but also talking about the season, their plans for next season, etc. Many were bench racing and for me that’s the best part of the night - just being able to talk with the crew you see working hard all year. Everyone talked with Tim and Drew Jackson (LTM) about future plans and the 2015 events. Best of all was talking with fellow racers, away from the track and being able to laugh at things that happened. We relived some great racing from 2014. With the Crossroads Cup awards being handed out, it brought the end of an era. Crossroads will not host events for 2015 and the track is for sale. I for one hope someone buys it and can bring it back to racing soon. On the other side of the fence the Fly Showdown Series was a huge hit as well as
emily Hooper with her award
lTM award Winners
the Lincoln Trail Motosports championships. Many riders and their families were proud as they walked up to receive their awards. One great aspect of the night was each rider was given a chance to thank the people who Crossroads Cup Winners help him or her through the season. Some said nothing but ‘thank you’, some thanked everyone and one little guy sounded like he was ready for the Supercross, giving a perfect speech named all his sponsors, the Man Upstairs and his parents. Not only did riders go up, but the families were also placed in drawings and got to pick some cool moto stuff when their number came up. Tim and Drew thanked everyone for coming for the night as well as the events all year. Award winner or not, thanks to everyone for supporting local motocross and helping the riders do what they love to do. Riders heat up Hayward Ice
#18 ryan garson and eventual winner #28 Tim Hinz charge into the first turn in Quad B Open.
Hayward, Wisconsin - February 14 MIRA Ice Racing
W
ith the coldest part of winter nearing an end, everyone involved in ice racing was out making sure to not miss any opportunity. This weekend, one of those options was the annual Fire On Ice event held in Hayward, WI, out of the Nelson Lake Landing Resort. This event is one of the racer’s favorites, and big part of that is the special efforts put in by Hayward’s Rick Richter of R-3 Racing. A live radio remote and $2400 in drawing prizes were just part of the “extras” that were part of the day. This was the second to last event of the season for the Midwest Ice Racing Association, and riders were ready to grab those final points, and tear up a fantastic mile plus course. The only damper - it was really cold out, like minus five at practice time. The sun was out though... and by this time in winter everyone was toughened up a bit, so the races were on without question. Kawasaki rider Gavin Love got a good jump off the line in the Open C class first moto, and quickly stretched a lead over the other riders. Zak Skaudis was running second through the first two laps. Coming on strong from a fifth place start, Jase Oien quickly moved into third, then

passed Skaudis for second with two laps to go. Matt Sisko finished fourth. In the second moto, Love led Oien all the way as the top two repeated their first moto preformance. Sisko was running third with Skaudis doing his best to get past, right from the first corner. With half a lap to go, Skaudis found the edge he needed and slipped by to finish third, in the moto and overall. Jorden Klejeski had a very good day in the twelve rider Open B class. Grabbing the holeshot in the first moto, he led all the way to the finish. Back just a few bike
lengths, there was a good battle over second that went to the checkered flag between Jeremiah Lindberg and Jeff Berg. Berg settled for third as Evan Sheff was just a bike length back in fourth. Kyle Love finished fifth. Berg got a good jump to lead through the first couple corners of the second moto, before Klejeski bumped him back a spot. By the third lap Sheff was all over Alan Slepica, trying to take over third, while Berg had all of them on his rear fender. Klejeski pulled out another win, having separated from the race behind him. Berg held on for second (3-2) as Sheff’s 4-4 motos were good for third overall ahead of Slepica (7-3). Sam Boustead quietly finished sixth in both motos for fifth overall. Second place finisher in moto one, Lindberg didn’t finish the moto. The Open A race was as exciting as expected. Wyatt Hooper put his Honda out front off the start, riding really well. Going into the second lap, the entire class was still in a tight formation, pushing Hooper hard. In second, Neil Pede knew CYCLE USA, April 2015

moto, grabbing the holeshot. Pede was second, and immediately put the charge on. Half way through the lap, in a long back sweeper that was really fast, it was like Pede grabbed an extra gear as he went around Almer for the lead. Part way into the second lap Almer lost his line, slid into an outside snowbank and dropped to fourth. He did his best to get around now third place rider Hooper, but it wouldn’t happen. Pede took a comfortable win ahead of Spindler. Almer’s 2-4 was still good for third overall ahead of Hooper (43). The studded Quad C class had thirteen riders hit the ice, but no one could keep contact with Austin Johnson. He quickly established a lead in the first moto, and went on to win almost uncontested. Jared Popp, Joe Erkkila and Marshall Bridges ran tight through the moto. Popp held on for second, as Bridges found just a little opening to slip past Erkkila for third before the last lap. Johnson pulled a repeat in moto two, leading all the way. Erkkila had a great start, and was clean in second through the first couple corners. Those first corners where really jammed up behind him, with all the riders. When the snow dust settled and everyone started dropping into a single file line half a lap into it, Popp was third, just ahead of Bridges. They ran that way to the end, Popp’s 2-3 motos earning second overall ahead of Erkkila (4-2). It

inety seven rider entrants in all converged to the icy shores of West Rush Lake to pay tribute to the “Ice King” by competing in the ninth annual John Larson Memorial Three Hour Endurance Ice Race. The Grumpy Minnow Resort and Campground played host to the event which was also sponsored by Kold Kutter/ SyServ Contractor Services/ Larsons Cycle Racing, and the Norseman Motorcycle Club. Mother Nature chipped in as well by providing comfortable riding temperatures that ranged in the upper 20’s throughout the day. The Rush Lake Ice Riders Group headed by Mark Deal, have been maintaining a Le Mans style race track all winter for ice riding enthusiasts to enjoy, and modified the coarse for this event by lengthening it to just under three miles long. petition, winning the Heavyweight class was Team Smog headed by CRA road race competitor Kyle Ohnsorg, who along with teammates Tommy Mason and Adam Dolney completed a total of fifty four laps. Three other teams also completed 54 laps, but most notably was second overall finisher in the Heavyweight division Jason Larson, who rode the entire race alone, in effect topping the “Iron Man” class as well. An astonishing feat! For the first time, multi-consecutive Heavyweight title holders Jake and Erick Bostrom would not be defending their crown due to the absence of Erick’s older brother Jake. Erick did however compete in the Light (250cc) class along with youngsters Nate Minster and Mason Grecula, and finished in first place, by completing 48 laps. The “Old Guy’s” division (50 plus) was topped by track prep guru Mark Deal and Dave Spizman. The FatherSon class was won by the Lucky Dog team of Mason and Roger Hendricks.

Cedar Lake Arena, a perfect moto “Fix” for Winter blues New richmond, Wisconsin - February 7th By Keith McKenna
N
ow well into the second month of winter, and moto racers are chomping at the bit to churn up some terra warmed by the sun’s life giving rays. For a while yet, racers are gonna have to be content with tearing up the indoor track at the Cedar Lake Arena in New Richmond, Wisconsin. The Cedar Lake Arena, still often called the “Sandbox” held round three of the 2015 Winter Series in early February, and riders from all over Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa were in attendance, as well as several riders from Illinois. A number of fast riders from the great white north crossed the border to come down from Canada, as well as a few pair from Watertown SD. Riding and racing indoors may not be the same as tearing it up outside... but in the dead of winter, the riding opportunities provided by this facility are so welcomed! It fist the need perfectly, and everyone just loves it here. Consistency is king in the 50Jr 4-6 class. Braxton Williamson ended the day on the

second step of the podium, just as he has in the previous two rounds of the series. That consistency has Williamson enjoying a sixteen point lead on the season with one round remaining. Today’s winner Cade Olberding was wheeling his L’il Cobra missile with authority as he won both motos! Miles Mccarty round out the winners circle with a third place finish (4-3). 65cc 10-11 action was as great as always. These half pint speedsters are
bustin moves on their diminutive 2-stroke rockets that rival riders much more mature. These kids are fearless! Trevor Nelson from Eyota, MN is a formidable opponent both indoors and out, as shown by his three overalls this season, and growing point lead for the 2015 championship. Today, Nelson tasted the champagne, which in this case, is a Sunny-D juice box after sweeping both motos. Eli Tetzlaff enjoyed a good day on the track

for a second place finish while Anthony Edgerton snagged third place, after making the trip up from Illinois. The day was stacking up to be quite a battle in the 250 and Open-A classes, with quite a list of heavies looking to unseat Black Diamond MX Graphics AMA Pro racer Joe Perron from his throne as King of the SandBox in 2015! #708 Yamaha mounted Joe Perron is undefeated thus far in overalls in 250A, and leading the points in the Open-A division with a win and two second place finishes in the series, he is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Today in the 250A class Perron showed second place, Honda mounted Logan Marzahn (4-1) the path to the winners circle, with commanding victory in the first moto, and a second place finish in moto two... good enough for the overall. Dylan Wolff grabbed the bronze laurels. However, when the checkers fell at the close of the Open-A scrum, Marzahn

In Open B, Reed Kannegiesser launched himself to the top spot on the day after finishing the opening two rounds of the series off of the podium. It wasn’t a walk in the park for the Honda CRF250 mounted racer. The Hancock, MN resident had his hands full with the #625 Kawasaki riding Austin Kienast over from Watertown, SD, who won the first moto. The second moto win for Kannegiesser has put him within striking distance of Kienast. Trevor Hayes took home third place (4-3). Series sponsors are The Shed Shop USA, KB5 Industries and PDR Performance. Also, BIG thanks to the Cedar Lake Arena Staff and the volunteers that commit to keeping the sport of motocross strong in Minnesota, all year long! District 17 Motocross Opener Casey Illinois - March 22 By James Pinckard/ Rollanda Pinckard
L
incoln Trail Motosports was blessed with great weather after a very cold wet winter. Racers from seven states came to race the Classic track which was in outstanding condition as a result of the LTM crew’s hard work. With 475 entries attacking the track, it got rough!! Being the first round of the AMA District 17 race of the season, it was the first time many riders were on the track this year. There were more than a few riders talking about arm pump and sore hands. Most of all there were smiles from seeing old friends, being back at the track and on the bike, and lots of bench racing. LTM said “Thank you to all the racers who came out for this event!” I think it’s great with the number of riders it looks like motocross is back! Best news is winter is over and welcome to the 2015 season! The first gate drop of the year was for the Open C class with thirty-four riders.

time he had better luck and held on to finish third. Gosnell was on his game and quickly out front, laying down fast lap times on his way to the moto and overall win. Mapes had his Honda on the gas again for second as third overall went to Bennett with a fourth in the second moto. Another rider who came out swinging was Big St Charles/ Seven Yamaha rider Joey Sapienza. Joey had his YZ across the line for both moto and overall wins in the 125 Two Stroke and the Schoolboy 12-16 classes. In the Open Two Stroke class, Yamaha rider Chad Jeralds was smoking fast with Sapienza pushing to the checkered flag. Jeralds took the first moto win with Sapienza second and Kawasaki rider Logan Blades third. In the second moto Sapienza showed why he already was a two class winner, and put his head down and charged in a race with Jeralds which was one of the best races of the day. Sapienza took the win with Jeralds second. The rider with the best seat in the house for the battle was Blades, finishing third for the moto and overall. The Open Beginner class drew seventeen riders which is good being there were forty-four in the 250C. This class is made up of riders who are breaking into mo-
tocross, and they are crazy fun to watch. Many have never raced before, like Yamaha rider Skylar Webb. “I have raced some indoors, but this is my first real motocross race. I loved it.” With lots of friends and family on hand to cheer him on he didn’t let them down, and took the first moto win. Yamaha rider Bryan Milligan finished second with Suzuki’s Craig Howell third. In the second moto Webb
had his group cheering for him when he topped the table-top, following the leader too close (a new to racing mistake), lost control, and went down. With the pack going by he kicked and kicked with his Yamaha finally firing and off he went. Webb worked his way through the pack but ran out of time and finished second for the moto and overall. First for the moto and overall went to Milligan. Third for

the moto went to Kawasaki rider Riley Johnson, which was good enough for fourth overall. While some riders were there for their first race ever some were returning after being gone for a while. One such rider was Shelby Kief in the Vintage class. “I have not been to a race for years but decided to come back and give it a try.” In the first moto Jay Brewer had his green machine on the gas and took the win with Honda rider Tony Ivie second and Kief third. In the second moto Brewer again had things under control. Ivie took second while third went to Yamaha rider Conrad Klusmeler but third overall went to Kief. Good job and welcome back! The +30A class was flying! Honda mounted Ronnie Ford took the win in both motos. In the first moto second went to KTM rider Joe Buskirk with new-to-theclass Suzuki rider Cory Deadmond third. In the second moto Deadmond showed why he is a long time LTM fast guy, finishing second. Third for the moto went to Honda rider Tim Borkiewicw but with a fourth in the first moto, third overall went to Buskirk who not only rode two classes but had his son riding two as well. Moto is a true family sport. The 50Sr riders got after it for sure and are already too fast for their parents to keep up with on foot. In the first moto Cobra rider Wyatt Bobo took the win with Zayden Mason and Hunter Savage filling out the top three. In the second moto
things were all mixed up with Mason taking the win, giving him the overall for the day. Second in the moto went to Savage. Second overall went to third place finisher Bobo, due to his first moto win. With so many riders having such a great day to kick-off the season, everyone was glad they were back on the track. If you stayed home you missed out on a great time and a great track, and the joy of seeing your moto buddies. Break out that bike, get your membership cards updated, and get out to the track! There’s a great season ahead. Results:

with Woodstock KTM second and US Chrome holding on in third. Parker Lange after the race, “ We had a pretty good race today, it was a little snowy the first hour. I tried to stay consistent and put down solid lap times. The course was tight but after getting the hang of it in the first hour I had a good solid idea of the track and was able to really push it my final time out. The ice held up and once the plows came out that really helped. By the end it was getting rough so I had to make a couple small adjustments on where I rode and it worked out for us from there. I really want to thank Pat Ryder for asking me to ride for him and giving me the chance to do the Steelshoe and this race. Also thanks to Bell Helmets, Winning Technology, Moose Racing, Witkowski Dentistry, and everyone else including my family that helped us out.” Jamison Duclos on the Rock River Powersports Ironman bike grabbed the holeshot with Jim Beckman riding as Team JJ was right behind. Duclos stayed out front all race, even managing to slip into fifth overall just before the two hour point. Beckman was pushing hard and seemed to be closing the gap on Duclos when just into the third hour he was knocked out by a broken chain. Luckily he was just out of the pit straight so it was a short push, but time was lost as he ran to his truck for a spare. Stephen Peppa cashed in on Beckman’s misfortune and

claimed second all the way to the finish. Wes Orloff finished third with Beckman recovering for a fourth. Heavyweight bikes was the biggest class of the day with fifteen entries and when they hit the holeshot Lance Wollin had the Sunset Bar & Grill (Lance Wollin/ Jesse Janisch) bike in the lead with the 328 Powersports A (Jacob Wiedmeyer/ Garrett Loeher ) bike barely edging out Mischler’s HD BMW (Eric Mischler/ Dan Mischler) in second. 328 was able to slip past the Sunset entry shortly before the first leg of the race was finished and maintained their lead until the final leg. Wollin and teammate Jesse Janisch were not going to let the win slip away and both pushed hard all race finally slipping out front just into hour 3. Janisch was riding the final leg and on the final lap both he and the 328 bike were close enough that he was not only battling Janisch, but getting blasted by ice roost. The two lead bikes crossed the finish feet apart with Sunset taking the win. After the race it turned out both teams were fighting tire issues as Sunset had spit out almost half of their screws and 328 finished on a flat. Eric and Dan Mischler of Mischler’s HD ran a solid third all race. The course was a good mixture of tight corners and Ironman winner Jamison Duclos then wide open straights over (23) was out front all day approximately 2.5 miles. This
