On June 17th, following the Loretta Lynn Youth Regional practice sessions, Sunset will hold a Track Walk with net proceeds going to Susan G. Komen for Breast Cancer Research. From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman Our season is finally under way with events from all disciplines having been held successfully. With the cold weather, late snows and all the continuous rain it is been a good month overdue. Even road riding has been limited. It sure felt good to get back into the saddle after such a long time off. I think this may have been the longest off season I remember. At least I got caught up on the many home improvement projects I have been putting off the last several years. May district business was fairly straight forward, membership numbers are very close to last year’s for the same time period. We are hoping to have our online membership sign-up running by June. We are also looking at forming a corporate membership to enlist dealers and inform the general public about our organization and all of the legislative work we do. Senator Klobuchar has introduced legislation to exempt small machines from the poorly thought out lead ban legislation. We are watching it work its way through the senate and hoping it will pass. Be sure to continue contacting your legislators until we have this issue resolved. This ban has definitely hurt the motorized recreation industry country wide and it is being evidenced at our local events. It is critical to keep our young riders and racers coming up from the mini classes. We have a few new safety awareness initiatives that we are working on with Mayo Clinic. Our first study was a trial of a newly designed training program just for youth racers. This program inte-
Announcements, personal stuff, and.... grates core and limb strengthening at the same time. We saw a marked improvement in measured parameters from pre study to post study in the participants. They all felt they were going into this season in better shape. This is a simple to follow regimen and can very easily be done at home and it is good for all ages. Look for more on this training program in the future. We have also made great strides in our concussion work. Mayo is performing baseline tests for racers at the Spring Creek MX Park facility. This is a first for MX in the US. We are catching up with all the high school football and hockey programs. The IMPACT test has been required of players at the HS level for several years. I know there a few racers out there that think all the work will be used against us. I assure that is not the case. I have not spent the last three decades working to better off road racing only to throw it all away. This is really new for us but it is a very good thing. If you are between the ages of 12 and 17 you should seriously consider enrolling in the study. We will also do the baseline IMPACT test on racers of any age. I strongly recommend that all racers get this baseline test now that it is available. Best of all its free. Mayo Clinic and Spring Creek with be sponsoring the Second International Motocross Safety Summit on Friday July 15th prior to the National. The first one was held at MX of Nations last year in Colorado. This will be open to all interested parties and will take place on the second floor of the sign up building starting at 500 P.M. after the amateur race. There will be a full compliment of speakers from all around the country. Mike

D16 Hare Scrambles Opener Lake Mills, Wisconsin - May 1 By Dave Hollub
T
he District 16 Hare Scrambles series was set to open at Aztalan Cycle Club, and Rollie Gleisner was out leading his crew into the wild backlands. Gleisner set a course that was ready to challenge every level of rider until the weathermen started predicting heavy storms in the days leading up to the race. Gleisner adapted to the predictions and reset parts of the course but as usual the weather predictions were completely off the mark. Sunday morning dawned to dry skies (as had Friday and Sat). First off the line were the 50cc riders. As they passed the scoring point on lap one it was Will Halverson in front with Loyal Prach and Rex Valek running less than two seconds back. Prach put his head down and charged hard on lap two to take the lead. Prach turned consistent laps and avoided making any mistakes to keep the lead to the finish. When Halverson went down on lap two Valek took over second place but soon Halverson caught and slipped back by him.

Next on the course were the 85cc riders and Seth Doeberlein jumped out into the lead early then held on with fast laps to the finish. Garett Daniels ran second while Collin Jahns held third to the finish. Doeberlein afterwards, “My race went good. There was one section where I got hung up and when I fell the bike was on my legs. A friend of mine helped me get it off so I could get back in the race. This is the first Hare Scrambles for me and I thought it went pretty good. I was dead last in the start but was able to get out front by the end of the lap. Thanks to Best Tile Werkz, Quaker Shake and Lube, and my Mom and Dad. Once again the Regional Grand Champion Series ran their Hare Scrambles leg at Aztalan and as seems to be the reoccurring theme it was a two way battle between John Stewart and Paul Philbrick for the win. Philbrick grabbed the holeshot with Jack Kainz and Dennis Oaks close behind. Stewart suffered from a hard starting bike and rounded the first corner in sixth. Stewart charged through the woods and at the end of lap one was out front with a three second lead on Philbrick. Norman Larose moved into third with Oaks and Kainz right behind. Stewart held onto his lead for the next three laps until Philbrick slipped past on lap five. Philbrick held on for the win with Stewart second. Larose held third to the finish. Because the RGN offers bonus points for riding the same bike in every event there often are some pretty unusual machines at the Hare Scrambles, this year the most exotic

was Speedy Pete Laubmeier standing for the hour on his trials bike for a sixth place finish. In the C class it was Don Bobbs firing up his KTM and leading at the first corner but he slid out in the hairpin onto the MX track leaving the door open for Jeffrey Sterling to jump out front. Ralph Fuller got by Sterling with Jake Noreen right behind. Fuller and Noreen had a running battle going and the lead changed frequently. Their race was reminiscent of the old Hare and Turtle story. Noreen was the Hare and he would make bursts throughout the race only to get passed by Fuller (the steady running Turtle) as he was picking his bike up or finding a way back onto the course. In the end Fuller crossed the finish just ahead of
Noreen as another steady rider Jeff Butenschoen crossed the finish in third. After the race I talked to both Fuller and Noreen. Fuller, “It was a blast; everyone came out to have a good time. I was shocked to get out near the front but everyone started crashing in front of me. I led two laps and started getting tired so I let a guy go by and he’d crash in the trees and then I would go by him. I was just slow and steady but he would pass me in every straight but then I’d just roll past him later as he was getting back up. I had to stand on his bike one time to make the pass as he was crossed up with three or four guys he was trying to get by. What a great race, it was back and forth nonstop; I think we shared an equal amount of lead laps. It was really a lot of fun. Thanks to Best Tile Werkz, North Shore Customs, and Fuller Throttle Builders” Noreen said, “I’m tired; I need some experience in this. This guy (Fuller) up here, slow and steady apparently wins the Hare Scrambles. It was fun, it was like nothing else I have never seen or raced. Running the MX track backwards was a blast; running through the woods fast was a blast, but definitely keeping it steady and on

two wheels is the way to go. Just an awesome race and after finally doing one I will do more, this was a blast.” In the A class Eric Hollub was out front at the holeshot and led lap one with Cody Bollinger right behind. On lap two Bollinger moved into the lead with Frank Cabalerro also slipping by into second. Bollinger was able to gap the rest of the class as he cruised out front until the end of lap six when he was forced out of the race by a sprocket that lost a few teeth. This left the lead to Chase Robinson and he held on to the end of the ten laps. Jamison Stachel finished second as Mark Sheppard rounded off the top three. Tammy Flemming commented on her second place finish in Women’s class, “It was pretty good, it was a lot different than the last one I did a few years ago. Back then I was praying to get over the gap by the tunnels, but this time I was more confident and felt pretty good. The moto track sections were awesome for me and in the woods nothing to hard or scary. I just felt really confident and I dug really deep when my daughter Sierra tried to pass me. It was really fun. Thanks to Chickenshite Racing, Spiderwebmxpics.com, Ride Sports, Steel MX Goggles, Dunlop tires, my awesome husband Mike, and Eric Gorr Forward Motion.”
To the 122 riders that came out and enjoyed a beautiful day in the Aztalan outback, thanks and we hope to see you again next year. Also the Club wants to extend a huge THANK YOU to Gleisner and his crew for once again setting up a safe but challenging Hare Scrambles on the limited club grounds. I didn’t hear a single rider saying the course was a cakewalk, in fact most were again surprised at what obstacles Gleisner seems to find every year. those that were new to the facility a chance to get ready for the Loretta Lynn Area Qualifier. Friday and early Saturday brought rain... enough that practice was muddy, but the track dried quickly and was great by mid day. Sunday, well it was just about perfect right from the beginning. Sunny, seventies, just the right grooming, and fast rac-
ing coming out of every class. It makes sense that many of the riders traveling great distances to this qualifier weekend would be fast... and potentially near the top of the results list. Only two of the day’s classes were won by Illinois riders. Jace Owen topped a huge Schoolboy 2 class taking back to back moto wins. Behind him it was obvious how talented the field was. California’s Dean Spangler went 5-4 for second while Wisconsin’s Jacob Boss finished third overall with a 4-6 set of motos. Zach Ambrose (TN) finished second in the first moto, but back in ninth in moto two. Cole Varty (GA) had 9-2 finishes for fourth overall. Sure
looks like local hero Owen has a good chance of bringing home some more gold at this year’s national. The other Illinois rider to score an overall was Justin Kelly who won the +25 class ahead of Tennessee’s Matt Griggs and Missouri’s Adam Young. Practically an Illinois rider... Juda, WI’s Roy Nafzger won both the +50 and +45 classes. The 250C Mod class had twenty-eight riders, and the best finishing area rider was Iowa’s seventh place Trevor Newton (8-8). Neil Tajchman out of Kansas worked his way up in both motos to finish 3-1 for the overall. Indiana’s Josh Osby gets the hard charger award in the SuperMini 2 class. Osby was moving up in the first moto, only to go down. He worked back up to third and then took a hard charge at passing into second at the finish line only to go down again, still finishing third. Kyle Nelson (IL) went down in the first turn and rode extremely well to finish fourth as Zachary Bishop (TN) led all the way to the win. In the second moto Osby had a little smoother run to finish second as Nelson also avoided trouble to finish a close third, both behind Burnett again. Open Pro Sport had twelve riders, representing ten states. After a wide open first lap, Texas rider Zeb Smith was leading with Indiana’s Brett Wagner and Zach Coons (WI) back just a bit, fighting for second. Late in the moto Coons was dropped back to fourth and they finished in that order. Georgia’s Bogen Cochran won the second moto as Coons worked his way to second, good enough for second overall. The story of the moto was again Smith. He started in the back of the pack, then tipped over at the finish of lap one trying to work up. After again being near the back, he worked all moto to finish fourth, and it was good for the overall. Thirty-eight riders left the line in the first 250B Mod class, and it was a mass of confusion through the first lap as positions were sorting out. Texas rider Bryce Dozier took the lead and then held it until the last lap when Michigan’s Austin Wagner made it past him
in the back rhythm section. Wagner, “I got a bad start and just kept trying and eventually got up there at the end. I made a lot of my moves in the back section by the uphill. The
his KTM as expected, and took four moto wins to sweep the +35 and +40 classes. Look for him to stand out at the regional as well as the national. Michigan’s Michael Bidus won the first College B/C moto. “I pulled the holeshot on my 250 against all the 450’s and then just rode smooth and as fast as I could. There was two singles up top and I was doubling them, and I think it got me some time on everyone each lap.” Tuf Performance local rider Chris Antolak rode close in second, and gave it his all to get the win. Antolak, “I got a pretty good start and my bike was hooking up really well. I tried all race to catch him and see if my arms would last. The new track is really good, and I was really looking to find smooth lines and avoid some of the ruts. I’m going to rest up, and hope to beat them in the next moto.” Alabama’s Drew Fields worked up to third with Joseph Dalzell crossing the line right behind him. Fields put it all together in the second moto and took the big win for the overall ahead of Michael Bugg and Bidus. Antolak finished fourth for an impressive third overall. It was another great day of racing at Motosports Park... and now it is one to the Regionals for many of these top finishers. Good luck to everyone!

track is good for passing.” Team Green’s Open Air Powersports backed Joseph Dalzell (IL) rode hard and finished third just ahead of Michigan’s Michael Bidus. “I got a pretty good start and worked up to second at one point. Wagner rode a great race and moved past me on a downhill and then went on to win. It was a close race.” Bidus was on fire in the second moto grabbing the holeshot and never looking back as he took the moto win and overall. Dalzell had another good start, and after fending off a couple challenges, held on for second in the moto and overall. First moto winner Wagner started in sixth and eventually passed Cory Catalani for fifth, and fourth overall. Warsaw, IN’s Jay Wagner rode well on

Koch takes two at Cambridge Cambridge, Minnesota - May 15 By Tim McBride
G
NC National #68 Josh Koch piloted his Last Minute Boyz/ Jeff’s SOS/ General Engineering sponsored Honda to a pair of Pro class victories during the opening round of the District 23 Dirt Track season held at the Norseman club grounds. The two 450 Pro heats were won by Koch and Pro Sport hot-shoe Conner Anderson. Koch pulled the holeshot in the main event followed by Conner Anderson, National #29 Jake Mataya, Conner’s younger brother Cole Anderson and Zach Zemanovic. Mataya slid his Delano Kawasaki past Conner Anderson for second near the halfway point, but with two laps remaining Mataya crashed while exiting turn two. Koch then raced on to the checkers uncontested. The Anderson brothers Conner and Cole filled out the podium while Zemanovic finished fourth. Mataya recovered quickly enough to garner fifth place in the eleven rider field. Ironically the Open Pro starting gate was decided with only one heat race that featured twelve riders. Conner Anderson scored the heat win ahead of a surprising performance from Zemanovic who finished ahead of Koch.

“Conner didn’t want me to have that one, said Koch afterward. “I felt his hand guard bouncing off my leg. Zemanovic took advantage of the situation and settled into second behind Koch and the duo quickly put some distance on the rest of the field. Anderson then settled down and reeled in Zemanovic late in the race and made the pass for second. “I wasn’t going to make that last restart easy for him (Koch) Anderson afterward. When asked about Zamanovic’s performance he explained, “I’ve seen that happen before, when some people come back from the off season and get really fast. When prodded about his sudden need for speed, the reserved teenager simply replied, “I just decided to step it up a notch. The 50cc Mini shaft class heat race saw third generation speedster Preston Langland and Amelea Hauer perform a photo finish with Langland garnering the narrow victory. The main event however was won by the first little lady of D23 Hauer, when Langland briefly pulled off the track with mechanical problems. Lucus Logue and Jeremy True garnered third and fourth respectively. “His (Preston’s) heat race win was pretty close explained Preston’s race bike tuner (and father of course!) Verdeen Langland. “So I changed the main jet hoping to give him a little more top end, but It didn’t work, at least we tried. Transplanted motocross racer slash ice race promoter Jake LeClair got the season
started on a high note by piloting to victory in the 450A class. Heat winner Dustin Paul crashed after a tangle with Mac McGrew. Tony Hauer finished third while Paul recovered to garner fourth. The four wheel division saw a familiar face in the winner’s circle in the form of Nick Allen, winning the Pro-Am and Open Pro classes. The Pro Am main saw Allen edge Andy Wendorff and Matt Ernhart. Open Pro was a little more dramatic. Long time quad kingpin Ben Bettis was out front and cruising during the opening laps, but a steadfast Allen and Wendorff found their way past him by race’s end. Ernhart stopped Allen’s chances of a three-peat by winning the +30 main event. Brady Fast, Denson King at Cahokia HC White City, Illinois, May 7 By Bud Northrup
T
he Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders held their first night hill climb of 2011 at their clubgrounds near White City, Illinois, with Dylan Brady and Josh Denson emerging with top honors. Matt Peters started the Fast Time war in the first round with a 3.500 second run on his KTM380 in the 450cc class. Cody Jenner lowered the time even more in the 600cc class with a 3.451 on his Honda. In second round action Dylan Brady set an astounding low time of 3.363 seconds on his KTM380 to take the win in the 450cc class, and the Fast Time of the night award. He paid a very painful price, however, as he crashed hard over the top and was injured so badly he had to be transported to a Springfield hospital by air. As of this writing, I understand Dylan is recuperating with a broken leg so the teenager from Ridge Farm will be out of action for quite a while. It was his third consecutive Fast Time in only three events in 2011. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in action soon. Peters first round time held up for second place with Cody Jenner third. Jenner was a double class winner, claim-
ing wins in both the 600cc and 600cc four stroke classes. His first round fast time of 3.451 seconds in the 600cc class held up all night for that win, with Troy Camerer second in 3.545 seconds and Josh Denson third. His first round run in the 600cc four stroke class would have been good for that class win also, but he beat it himself on his second ride with an even better 3.554 second run on his CR450. Camerer was second again with Mike Wargo claiming third. Mike (the ‘Pulverizer’) Pulver also enjoyed a double class win evening, his first coming in the +40 class. Jon Creek set the best time in that class with a 3.984 second time on his first run, but Pulver slipped under that with a 3.813 time to claim the win. Creek took second with John Brady third. Pulver’s second win came in the 400cc stock class, with a 4.246 second time on his first ride that held up all night. Micah King was second with William Miller third. Levi Peters took his third straight Youth Fast Time award as he sailed his KX85 over the top in 4.882 seconds on his first ride to win the 85Jr class. Andrew Fortner was second with Derick Bell third. Other youth class results saw Brodie Bennett winning the 50cc class with Ian Brown second. Charles Helfrich took the
65cc class win with Derick Bell second while Tanner King was the 85Sr Mini winner with Kirk Davis second. Josh Denson claimed the win in the King Of The Hill one run winner take all class for the ten fastest riders of the night with a good 3.506 second time. Jackson at Spring Creek Opener Millville, Minnesota - May 1 By Rolfe Otterness

ick Jackson came to Spring Creek Park’s opening round of the new season with the same thought all the other riders had. Nope, not to win, to stay warm! As a bonus, Jackson sliced through the ruts and bumps to win both of the Open A motos and the 14-24A races also. Riding multiple classes was a good way to generate some heat as the early spring weather was classic Minnesota, just a few snowflakes drifting down early in the day. seconds apart. This required rapid removal of the popular starting stands. The first lap was sure to be interesting with the extremely fast Veteran and Senior A riders starting in the second wave, forced to work through some of the other A riders. The first lap was exciting with the top four riders, Steven Squire, Tyler Tischler, Charles Duetscher and Duel Murphy only separated by seconds with Derrik Allen rounding out the top five. That type of close racings remained throughout the entire race with only 0:03 separating the top three riders at the checkered. In the end, Duetscher edged out Squire and Allen for the coveted vic-

In the end, Zach Dubois, Vincent Smith and Colton Schoolcraft edged out the rest of the class to take fifth. In the 85cc class, Eric Douglass was the first to launch from the line, but Dawson Dunnuck outran him to the first corner. By the third turn, Douglass had regained the lead and took off into the woods. Tyler Darmon made his way into second place and was keeping pace with Douglass early in the race. There was some confusion near the end of the youth race resulting in the white flag being shown to the riders for two consecutive laps. This allowed Dunnuck a chance to close the gap to Darmon, but he was unable to close the deal. In the end, Douglass help on for the win followed by Darmon and Dunnuck. The 65cc class saw Langdon Feltner take the lead early on with Cameron Lee following right on his rear tire. This running order stayed the same throughout the entire race, until the second of two white flag laps. Feltner was confused as he came into the home check thinking the race was over and he had it won, but soon realized he had to go again. Lee was able to make the pass on the last lap and land the victory in the sand. The big bike field was packed with talented riders that do not typically travel up to the sand. So many A level riders showed up, the front row was split into two waves starting ten PeeWee class winner Louden Feltner.
tory. The 50cc PeeWee field raced into a small loop that was constructed inside the woods, allowing the little riders to experience tight trees and exposed roots. The near perfect conditions provided for fast lap times and little availability to recover from any error. Louden Feltner pulled away with a class win in the 50cc Pre Mixed class followed by Garrett Mundy and Parker Harrison. Gem in Western Wisconsin Arkansaw, Wisconsin - May 14/15
A
rkansaw Cycle Park isn’t centrally located in D16... it is on the far west side of the state, and a pretty good drive from most of the higher populated areas. This is in part why they run two-days events whenever possible. Getting two days of racing out of one trip is always a good thing. This said, the drive alone will be part of your experience of coming to the facility. The argument could easily be made that this short trip south of Eau Claire is one of the most scenic rides you’ll find in Wisconsin. The track is nestled neatly into a valley surrounded by thick woods. There’s a state of the art watering system, a new sign up building big enough to hold evening activities, and everyone at the track puts in 110% to give the riders everything possible. Racing at Arkansaw Cycle Park is a treat worth the trip. If you’re a local rider, lucky you. This weekend started Saturday with a cold, damp, and very uncomfortable day of weather. The racing went well... and everyone enjoyed a dinner at the track afterwards. Rain Saturday night looked to put a damper on things come Sunday morning, but no way. The crew groomed and prepped a good track for the first motos, and a near perfect set of second motos. That and a much warmer, upper 60’s day made it a terrific day. Sunday’s racing kicked off with the Sportsman B/C class, and right out of the gate Lukas Cobian put his Southeast Sales KTM into the lead. Nate Remington was in second with Scott Ramker and Tyler Stoll all over his rear fender. Back just a few bike lengths at the end of the first lap, Nick Myhre was in fifth. As the laps ticked away Cobian pulled further away to eventually take a comfortable win. Remington got a little breathing room by mid moto, but Stoll was determined to move up and took over third with two laps to go. Ranker finished fourth while Mathew Meyers worked up and took over fifth in the final lap. The second moto was a repeat for Cobian who simply took off on the rest of the pack. Meyers had a better start getting into second early and running there to the finish for second overall (5-2). In a four way tie after the moto, Scott Ramker was third overall (4-3) as Stoll finished fourth in the moto for fourth overall (3-4). Remington couldn’t capitalize on the great first moto, going 2-5 for fifth.
A group of the female racers between motos.
The 125Jr class was a good race as Jack Hendrick got out front at the start on his KTM with Aj Meidl and Keegan Cummins dogging him hard through the opening lap. A lap later the two front runners had opened up a gap on Cummins as Nicholas Randrup was fourth and Josh Dearborn had worked into fifth after passing Brady Bill. With two laps left Hendrick had pulled away from Meidl, but then a couple mistakes, and a hard charge by Meidl changed everything. As they started the last lap, Meidl had his Suzuki glued to to Hendrick, pushing him in every corner. Hendrick looked like he was caught off guard and wasn’t riding as smoothly as he was earlier. With half a lap to go he cracked, and dropped his bike in one of the rutted corners. Meidl grabbed the lead and took the moto win. Tyler Degenhardt won After a busy first the 250C class both days. lap, Meidl started pulling away in the second moto back and was in second when he (Meidl) lost his with Hendrick working his way through Cummins shifting so I ended up taking first. That gives me and into second by the third lap. That held until late four first place trophies for the weekend after winin the moto when it looked like Meidl had it won, ning seven of my eight motos. This is a really long but a bike problem slowed him and eventually drive for us to get here, but it is one of my favorite forced him to just finish the race. Hendrick took tracks. They put on a really good program and I over and got the win ahead of Cummins and Rancan’t wait to come back. It is a really fun track.” drup. The +25B class had Pat Kumm jump out to Team 2 rider Hendrick later in the day after the lead right off the start and never look back. As taking both SuperMini moto wins, “it was pretty he led the moto from start to finish, fellow Pittsville, muddy early, but I rode yesterday so I just took one WI rider Joshua Lechner worked up to second lap of practice. My motos went good, I won both ahead of Brandon Miller. Late in the moto Aaron my 85cc motos. After crashing in the first 125 moto Bechel made a pass on Miller for third, but Miller I got a bad holeshot in the second moto. I came came right back in the last lap to take the position before the flag. Bechel pulled the second moto holeshot and held it for about a half lap before Kumm came screaming by for the lead. It was all over from there as the top two slowly pulled away. Miller and Lechner swapped spots a few times before settling into their final positions where Miller again finished third. The +25A class was won by Michael Little on his Suzuki. After finishing runner-up to Kristopher Dubiel in the first moto, Little grabbed the second moto holeshot. From there he held off everything Dubiel tossed at him, and got the win. Tyler Degenhardt had the right ideal in the good sized 250C class as he grabbed the holeshot and then put his head down, looking to leave all the racing behind. It turned out to be a really good plan, and the next several positions were hotly contested all the way to the last lap. As Degenhardt held the lead, Garrett Weir was running in second. Lucht was one of the challengers early til a get-off dropped him back into the pack. As the second lap got underway, Jeffrey Schmid and Logan Schjaneman were beating on Weir for second with everything they had. Lap after lap these guys went at it until Schmid made a pass stick just in time for the checkered flag. Weir finished third with Schjaneman and Marshfield, WI’s Jordon Wolf rubbing plastic to fill out the top five. Degenhardt left no doubt in the second moto, after leading all the way to the checkers for a two moto sweep. Weir, Schmid and Schjaneman were close all moto, but finished in the order they started leaving Weir second overall (3-2) ahead of Schmid (2-3). Wolf was also perfectly consistent finishing fifth. Max Earley jumped out front of the 65cc class and immediately went to pulling away from Kaleb Carman and the rest of the pack. Carman fell back a ways, but by mid moto was holding pace. Bailey Otis ran in third

for a while but then slowly slipped back a couple spots as the riders sorted themselves out on what was still a pretty deep and challenging track. Seth Doeberlein worked up to third, and while charging from the back of the pack, Andrew Sakry was on fire as he grabbed fourth in the last lap. Back up front, Carmen had closed the gap and was now in striking distance of Earley. In the end it didn’t matter as Earley took the win, but it showed that Carmen was up to speed, and possibly ready to take a shot in the second moto. Earley led a good part of the second moto, but gave it up at the wrong time. Late in the moto Carmen slid by for the win, and the overall as the two put on a good show once again. Doeberlein rode well for third again as Bailey Otis stepped it up to finish fourth after a sixth in the first moto. Bryce Backaus pulled the 250A class holeshot. He never had a second to relax, but held tough and held that
lead all the way to the finish for the first moto win. Dylan Narel ran in second all the way as well with Colton Karl in third. The lead pack never had more than a couple bike lengths separating them from each other. After a rough start, Jason Erdmann made every lap count as he climbed his way through the pack to finish fourth. Sugar Maple track owner Travis Erdmann came out in the second moto with a plan, “I took a chance and timed the gate just right and got the holeshot. It was going good but after a couple laps I broke my shift lever and then just gave it everything I had to hold on with the bike stuck in second gear.” The Max Power/ Pro-Action Suspension rider held the lead by a slim margin at the end as Colton Karl worked up to his rear fender. Cody Fredrick was running in second early but lost his rear brake and dropped back into the pack. Backaus finished third, and it
was enough for the overall. Lukas Cobian was on fire all day, and the 250B class was his all the way once again. He led every inch of the way in both motos. Brock Nelson had a good ride in the first moto to finish second. His DNF in the second moto opened the door for the other front runners, John Weir and Aj Meidl to finish second and third ahead of Eric Anderson. Eight riders left the gate in the first Women’s class moto, and two Wisconsin Rapids riders led the way. Falen Narel and Kendra Randrup started up front and stayed there all the way to the end. Sierra Dortch quickly worked her way into third ahead of Stephanie Hinze for the final running order up front. Dortch wasn’t able to finish the second moto while the action for the win was wide open. Randrup was leading while Narel was way back, and trying and catch up. Just when it looked like Randrup had the win, she seemed to maybe relax just a little too much and missed an inside line in the last corner before the finish line. She may not have even known that Narel had worked all the way up to her rear fender. An elated Narel after the moto, “I got the holeshot and then went down like two corners in. I was thinking I was screwed, but I got up, and just said go. I caught up to everyone and just went for it at the finish line and won. I stuffed my way to the inside of Kendra and

won.” Winning the way she did the first moto may have been a lot easier... but she was a lot more excited after having come through the pack for a last second win. It was great ride for sure. Milwaukee, WI’s Wayne Slagle made the trip up to Arkansaw for the weekend, and made the most of it.... after some success on Saturday, he took the holeshot in the +45 class and rode off to another moto win. Tim May ran in second with John Dubiel third all the way to near the end of the moto. With just over a lap to go, Dubiel pulled a good move on May for the pass and to finish second. In the second moto Slagle again rode smart and took the win. This time out May finished second for second overall ahead of Dubiel. Mike Anschutz finished fourth overall with his 4-5 motos ahead of Kevin Bakken (6-4). Johnson Sales Yamaha/ CMJ Raceway backed Dylan Narel took the first moto Open A class win. Narel, “I got the holeshot on my new 450 and led the first two laps. As I came into the whoops on the third lap I swapped and Jason Erdmann got by me on the inside of the next corner. I followed him til the last lap before he screwed up and I was able to re-pass him by the step-up step-down section.” Erdmann finished second while Colton Karl was third after Bryce Backaus had a late moto fall drop him to fourth. In the second moto Erdman led all the way from the start. First moto winner Narel had to work his way up from fifth. “I got a bad start off the line after picking a bad spot. I got by Colton in the back section then Bryce after the start corner. It was a pretty good race. The track was good. It is drying up and rougher, but good.” Erdmann was all smiles after getting the win, and overall. “Getting that start and having my bike shift made it a lot easier. It went really good. This is my best day, and my first weekend of winning the A class. It really feels great to have it all come together!” Running his own track, we asked him about his thoughts on the Arkansaw facility, figuring he should have some good insight. “The track is super safe, and it flows really well. I personally like ruts in the corners, and there’s some real ones here. This is a really fun track with something for everyone. There’s a lot here for beginners to like, as well as the best guys.” We couldn’t have said it any better... this is just one of the many special places you have to check out in District 16. Record Turnout at HC Opener Red Wing, Minnesota - May 8 By Mike Nelson

fter being postponed due to weather, hill climbers came out of the woodwork from all across the Midwest for the Harry Exner Memorial Climb, and season opener hosted by the Indianhead Motorcycle Club on their hill in Red Wing, Minnesota. The club wanted to honor the memories of Harry and show support for his family after he was tragically taken from all of us in an auto accident while attending college in Colorado over the winter. The Exners have been long time friends and supporters of the Hillclimbing sport and were presented with a plaque between rounds to commemorate the day followed by a moment of silence to remember Harry. This climb opened the season for Minnesota and Wisconsin with points awarded for both districts, and when sign up closed, there were 280 entries ready to take their shot at the newly reworked hill. The weekend actually got started with a full day of practice on Saturday for riders to get their machines ready after the long offseason. When the practice session wound down, Zach DeGross led the pack for the day on his 600cc class ride with a late afternoon run that stopped the clock just under that six and a half second mark, but many riders were within just a couple tenths of a second, so the competition was going to be tight on race day. Tyler Clark opened things up Sunday morning in the ATV class on his tricked out Banshee with a smooth run of 6.741 seconds.
Jacob Kohn makes his hill climb debut.

Zach Diercks was the only other ATV rider with anything for Clark trailing by less than five hundredths of a second after the first run. Both improved in the second round with Clark staying on top for the win with a smokin’ fast run of 6.256 seconds. After Clark finished schooling the ATV riders, and most everyone else, it was time for the newest up and comers to take to the hill in the MicroMini class. Kaden Funk led the way being the only rider in the class to make it over the top with a first round time of 15.879 seconds. Bodee O’Neil and Cody Paider both impressed the crowd as well with runs of over 200 feet. O’Neil earned a second place finish closing in on the top at 280 feet with Paider dropping into third at 210 feet. Two riders made their debuts in the sport as well this weekend. Hawkeye Downs opener, finally Cedar Rapids, Iowa - May 21 By Tracy Petrak and Missi Thede
S
o who wouldn’t want to spend their last day on earth at a motocross race? According to a few, the end of the world was to come to our area at 5 p.m. on May 21 and all I could think about was, “Will we get the first motos in?” The morning started out with rain and that gut-wrenching feeling of another cancellation at Hawkeye Downs. The previous two races did not happen because of the weather so another canceled race would be as close to the end of the world as we know it. Thank you to divine intervention, or whatever you want to call it - the rain moved off and the skies cleared out for the first race. The turnout was great and the track conditions were perfect. This was a new track layout and it proved to be as exciting for most as well as challenging. Quad A first moto action started with a jam-packed gate. #121 Kody Kropp took the lead early and dominated the first lap through with Nick Crow, Adam Seabold and Cam Reimers in pursuit. Reimers moved up on Seabold, gained the third position, and was on a mission to pass Crow and Kropp. After catching Crow he was dead-set on getting Kropp. Reimers nailed the back triple in his quest to get right on Kropp’s tail but just couldn’t get the edge he needed. Kropp took first moto win with Reimers and Crow to follow. In the second moto Reimers took the lead and never let go. He was closely followed by Kropp and by the second lap they

pulled ahead of the pack in their own race for first and second. Reimers took the win with Kropp on his tail while third place was filled by Crow. The +30A class started with James Bennett, Todd Walton and Chad Leidigh taking a strong lead into the first corner. Leidigh and Walton were side by side over the finish line for the second lap as they continued to battle it out for second place. Walton eventually took over and then made his pass by Bennett for the lead and moto win. Bennett took second and Leidigh third. Watching the +30A bikes is always entertainment in itself. The gate dropped for the second moto and Walton pushed out front with Bennett knocking at his back tire. Leidigh was hung up at the starting gate and he came shooting out to catch up with the group. By the second lap it was exciting to watch Leidigh pour it on and work his way up to third. Crossing the finish line with finesse and style came Walton for a first place finish with Bennett and Leidigh finishing in second and third. Conrad Schipper kicked off the 14-
24B/C holeshot and ran hard throughout the race with Dylan Thomas in second position and Jake Harnish third. Harnish passed Thomas in the second lap and pursued Schipper to the end. With the 14-24B/C class getting onto the starting gate for the second moto you could see lightning flashing in the distance, setting the stage for this fast and furious group of racers. Schipper secured the holeshot and then flew through the laps and took the checkered flag as though he was in his own race. Thomas held second while being pushed by Chase Juhl and Harnish. Overall Schipper took first, Thomas second and Harnish finished up in third for the night. Just as the night was closing down, the lightning got closer, the wind came across the track a little harder and the timing could not have been more perfect for a storm to roll in. Monticello, Good & Challenging Monticello, Minnesota - May 1 By Michael Pohl
T
he Norsemen Motorcycle Club kicked off the District 23 Off Road season with the highly regarded Monti Hare Scrambles. It was May 1st, so naturally it snowed in the morning, and the wind blew hard for pretty much, well, eternity. You simply can’t control the weather, so Jay Waalen and his well-oiled team of Norsemen club members put their heads down and ran a flawless event. It will be remembered as one of the toughest Monti races in years. And if you stayed home to miss the cold weather, you also missed a hotly contested race. As soon as riders roared off the starting line, tall whoop’s led them into the jaws of an Endurocross section. The first obstacle had large logs strategically (masochistically?) placed to really test one’s mettle. Riders bashed into Paul Bunyan sized logs, only to be bounced straight back, many falling over while trying to keep their bikes upright. But they picked themselves up, dusted off and started all over again. And again. It was agonizing to watch, especially since these were the AA riders! Top-tier bike jockeys, thought to have never so much as tipped their bikes over in the garage, were seen falling all over
themselves. “My God, what will this be like for the poor B riders when they get here?” I thought. But by the time the B’s arrived, corner workers and volunteers were systematically helping riders through the worst of the logs. Once all the riders cleared the section, the Norsemen scurried out and dumped sand between the worst of the logs, allowing riders to maintain a semblance of momentum over these obstacles on their subsequent laps over the 9.8 mile (A/B) course. This was a fine example of the Norsemen not resting on their laurels; they were literally improving the course while the actual event was still in progress. C riders were routed around the most demanding sections of the Endurocross. Precipitation over the previous few days made the course slippery and slimy in many places. “The loam at Monti usually gets hammered and becomes rough with bumps over the course of the
day. Instead, ruts took the place of the bumps...which is what I prefer”, said Kyle Nelson. Well he might, since Nelson took the overall win from the blazing-fast Nate Ferderer, when Ferderer frustratingly ran out of

gas just a few hundred yards from the finish line. Fortunately for Ferderer, he was near the pits when his bike sputtered to a halt. He was able to grab a few cupfuls of gas and relight his YZ250F, allowing him to save second place. Ferderer led three of the five laps that the top six finishers completed. Third place was taken by Craig Holasek, whose 40th birthday it just happened to be that very day. Happy Birthday Craig! Senior A rider Dave Grunklee characterized the race as “brutal”. Woods Rider Development School Wisconsin Rapids, WI - May 14 By Michael Pohl
T
he Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club, in conjunction with Moose Off Road, put on their first Youth Off Road Riding School at Dyracuse Off Road Riding Park. Thirty-six riders attended the course, “about twice as many riders as we anticipated”, organizer Wolfgang Neuwirth stated. District 16’s top Off-road ace’s served as instructors; ISDE-Bound JD Friebl, Pete Laubmeier, John Strangfeld, Heath Drone, Ryan Moss (IL), and State Champ Matt Harrington. These guys were as comfortable teaching as they are at blasting through the woods. The entire event was executed as well as any professional riding school. Amazing, considering that this event was offered for free. It was soon apparent that a lot of thought went into making sure the students learned as much as possible, and that the pace moved along briskly. “We want to expand the base of off-road riders and make it easier for new riders to compete in Hare Scrambles. A lot of times young riders are intimidated at the
thought of racing, and we’re hoping this school will get them over that hump”, stated Neuwirth. By the end of the day the increased confidence of the riders was apparent; obstacles were attacked with enthusiasm and vigor. The course began, like all good instruction does, with the fundamentals. “Respect” was the first word out of head instructor’s
mouth. “Respect for your parents, respect for yourself, respect for your fellow riders and respect for the environment we ride in.” The next topic was basic motorcycle maintenance, where riders were taught how to properly lube and measure their bike’s drive chain, the value of oil changes and how to conduct air filter maintenance. The use of proper riding gear

for maximizing safe and effective riding was the last topic before hitting the woods. The course was divided into four sections: starts, hill climbing, log crossing and cornering. Riders were divided into groups, based on ability, and rotated through each of the four sections. At the start of each section, the instructors covered the learning objectives. Then students were coached as they repeated the exercise until they had mastered each challenge. Instructors pointedly touched on riders improving their body positioning, riding stances, arm positioning and where they should be looking while riding. A lot of good habits were being reinforced early in these young lads riding careers. “Sometimes kids don’t listen to their Dad’s when it comes to riding technique”, said Bob Maki, who brought his two sons to the school from Minnesota. “But they will listen to a designated instructor, who knows what he’s talking about. When the instructor reinforces what Dad The organizers...
has been saying, everyone benefits”. And there really is such as thing as a “Free Lunch”, since County Sports picked up the tab for eats for all. There was even “goodies bag”, packed full of assorted riding items (chain lube, given to each student at the end of the day goggles, etc). A certificate of completion was proudly accepted by each and every rider.
The Dyracuse facility was an ideal location for this event. It’s way to get to and has excellent amenities. The teaching exercises were just a few hundred yards from the parking area. When the students were done with their instruction, they ripped around the multiple MX tracks and trails of this city-owned facility. Another 80 acres has recently been acquired here, which should make an excellent riding destination even more compelling. This was a truly outstanding event. The very next day, Hunter Neuwirth and Mason French promptly went out and won their races on Sunday – Hunter won Open C and Mason won the 65’s. It was put on by a cadre of people who demonstrated a true love this sport by volunteering their time, and considerable talents, to invest in the future of off road riding. The Rapid Angels just announced they will put on another school next year. It’s an investment that will pay dividends for a long time into the future.

Mothers Day at Aztalan Lake Mills, Wisconsin - May 8 By Dave Hollub
W
here else would everyone be on Mother’s Day other than Aztalan Cycle Club. Whether you were kicked out for the day so mom could relax, or if she headed out with you, everyone was in for a great day; weather-wise and exciting racing action. 110 riders showed up early to take advantage of the Saturday open practice and then 475 entries came out to race on Sunday. First class out of the gates was 50Sr as Wyatt Liebeck led them onto the track. Liebeck had a serious challenge from Braden Warner all moto but was able to stay out front. On the final lap it looked like Warner was positioned to make a pass when he got caught up behind a lapper and lost his chance. Eugene Wolff ran third from the start and finished just ahead of Brandon Martyniak. Martyniak grabbed the moto two holeshot and held the lead for the next three laps. On lap four Wolff slipped out front and took the moto win. Warner battled all moto with Kane Harpster for the third spot, but Harpster prevailed at the checkers. Wolff (3/1) was the overall winner with Martyniak (4/2) and Warner (2/4) rounding out the top three. In Open C it was a chance for old-timer/ woods rider Brian Terry to teach the kids a few lessons. Terry powered his Husqvarna to round the holeshot out front but he soon had Ian Malinowski pushing him. As they came over the plateau on lap one Malinowski launched over Terry to take the lead. By the time lap two started Lucas Zimmerman and Royce Fortier had moved into position right behind the two front runners. Fortier found the opening and slid past both Zimmerman and Terry into second and then when Malinowski went down on lap three the lead was his. Zimmerman got by Terry as did Jacob Holter by the end of the moto. Zimmerman launched his KTM off the start in moto two edging out Terry at the corner. Zimmerman settled into a smooth rhythm and stayed out front to the finish. Malinowski got by Terry early in lap two and then on the second time over the plateau Kenny Ehredt jumped over Terry for third. In the end Terry
back from a tenth spot at the holeshot, eventually moving his way to finish third. In moto two Cobian edged Skodras out for the holeshot. As Cobian and Skodras battled they began gapping the rest of the class leaving Matthew Meyers leading the rest of the pack. Meyers held off Cody Ciszewski for the next two laps before Ciszewski found a gap to sneak past. Cobian went on to grab holeshots in five of six motos on his way to the overalls in Open B, 250B, and Sportsman B/C. In Open A it looked like time had been turned back as Port Yamaha rider Mathew Maier and Jake Angove leads Justin Wolf (299) in 250B moto one. Matthew Hopkins traded moto wins. breathing room. Dylan Ziolkowski and Simonton were battling for second while Maier was running fourth. On lap two Simonton bobbled allowing Maier and Dretzka to move up into third and fourth. Maier got by Ziolkowski and began his chase to catch Hopkins. Maier used the open track wisely and as lap five began was right on the rear wheel of Hopkins. Maier made the pass for the lead in the West end and despite Hopkins pushing hard, held on for the moto win. Maier took the overall with a 2/1 while Hopkins (1/2) was second and Dretzka (3/3) finished third. Maier, “In the first moto of Open A I was running third. Joey went down and I was able to catch up to Matty but I couldn’t make the pass. In the second moto I had a horrible start and came from about seventh or eighth. I just put my head down and kept putting in hard laps trying to catch up. I was able to get up to Matty and near the end put in a good pass to come home with the win, so it was pretty

good. It was fun racing with Matty again. We have a lot of memories from back on the 80s and stuff. It’s cool having him back and I just wish all the other guys we used to race with could come back. It makes it a lot of fun, we are all older and it is all for fun, it makes it a blast. I’d like to thank Power Sports One and Motosports Factory.” Dylan Densow launched down the start in 65cc to take the holeshot just ahead of Tyler Gamble. By midway through the lap Eddie Norred had caught up. Norred slipped by in the second lap but Densow kept charging to the finish intent on trying to get the lead back. Meanwhile Tristian Tuhy was running third with Gamble and Seth Doeberlein close behind. Doeberlein moved past Gamble on lap three seeting the finish order. Densow repeated the holeshot in moto two with a big gap at the corner but soon had Norred all over him. As lap three was just beginning Densow got sideways over a jump but despite a great save on the landing lost
the lead to Norred. Doeberlein was cruising in third with Tuhy running fourth. Tuhy went down in the west end on the final lap leaving Ezra Rugg with the fourth position to the finish. A 1/1 day locked the overall for Norred while Densow (2/2) was second. As usual 250C saw a huge turnout and this month it resulted in two gates of 27 riders each. In 250C-1 Alex Wille was flying down the start straight ahead of everyone but at the corner he went wide and Joey Wendelberger stole the holeshot. By midway through lap one Kenny Ehredt was out front with Wendelberger second and Zachary Taylor in third. Taylor moved into second on lap two. Kyle Kilday charged into third on lap two and held off challenges from Wille and then James Burd in the final lap to take the checkers in third place. Wendelberger didn’t need any help in the moto two holeshot as he powered around the corner out front. Once again Ehredt was on the move and out front with some breathing room by the time he hit the plateau on lap one. Wille was in second with Taylor all over him pushing for any opening to get past. On lap two Taylor made a pass stick and began chasing Ehredt. Wille soon had Taylor Strauss on his rear wheel and as the white flag was out Strauss made his move to take third place to the finish. Ehredt took the overall with a perfect 1/1 finish while Taylor (2/2) was second and Kilday (3/4) finished up the top three. Once again the race weekend was a success as Mother Nature smiled on Aztalan and gave us a perfect day to go out and play. The club wants to say a huge thank you to all the moms that let their families come out and enjoy a day of competition. Hopefully your day went just as perfect however you chose to spend it. Megacross Season Opener Mendota, Illinois - April 30
T
he 2011 Megacross season kicked off on April 30th. This was to be round two, but after the opener was rained out, riders were excited to see all the rain blowing through the area missed the track, and they were in for a great night. Near perfect weather greeted the good turnout of riders and spectators, and event promoter Gerhard Ward worked in some track changes that kept everyone on thier toes, and smiling all night. The Saturday night racing is as popular as ever in Mendota, and as the riders hit the track for practice, you could just tell it was going to be a great night. The track was worked up just right, and forming perfect lines in the corners. As the sun set, the racing 85Jr riders off the line. just got better, and we saw a preview of what will be another exslid to the back of the thirteen rider class. citing season. Brett Aimone didn’t mind as he took over the Kevin Huddleston started his night off lead with Hunter Gudyka second. It was a right in 50cc 4-8 by pulling the holeshot. As busy first lap for the young riders, and as they the speedster charged into the second corner crossed the finish line for the first time Radko the rush came to a quick end as he fell, and Tomko had passed his way into the lead.
Adam Petnuch in 14-24
From there he set a fast pace and began pulling away. Evan Entas and Thomas Wojtasow were forth and fifth before Luke Jackson dropped Wojtasow back a spot in the second lap. Meantime, Huddleston was making his way forward, and running in seventh. Gudyka passed Aimone in the third lap. Still charging as they entered the final lap, Huddleston moved into third and then did all he could to find a way around Gudyka, to no avail as they took the checkered flag in second and third. Jackson worked up to fourth in the last lap as Aimone finished fifth. The 125cc class had a good turnout as seventeen riders left the gate in the final, with Robbie Hyson jumping into the lead. Kyler Hyde was third and pushing Ricki Williams looking to move up. Coming on hard through the first set of woops and first couple track sections was Matt Mellott on his Yamaha. By the first time over the plateaus by the start Mellott had taken over third behind Hyde as they bumped Williams to fourth. While the top three pulled a small lead, a three lap battle over fourth developed as Tony Spizzirri and Williams traded positions twice with Brian Krohn trying his best to spoil the fun for both of them. Spizzirri finally found a move that held for fourth, and then Williams managed to hold on for fifth by a half bike length over Krohn at the finish. The +40 class winner David Hayes made his winning ride look easy as he led right from the start. “It went really good, I got the holeshot and then just rode smooth. The changes to the track slowed it down, and made it a little more technical. It was nice and sticky out there, and really good.” Larry Bank started in second but by the end of the first lap had given way to Steve Perkins. Troy Quest ran in fourth through the first lap, before Brady Harnish moved up to finish fourth. Frank Licastro made a late moto pass for fifth, improving on his seventh place finish in the heat race. The 250A class was smaller than usual, at least by Megacross terms where a full gate is common. Still, it was a good race with Tom Hofmaster leading most of the moto. Kevin Markwardt was on his rear fender all the way as Brian White and Chad Johnson were rubbing plastic in a contest over third. The order held until the last lap. With Markwardt trying to pressure for the lead, Hofmaster tucked his front end while breaking at the end of the fast back straight. Hofmaster hit the ground hard and was later with the medics for observation. Markwardt took the win as White held off Johnson for second. Jordan Mackiewicz led all the way in the Super Mini class. “Things went pretty smooth. The track was nice with good ruts and it was real tacky. I got a good start and it all pretty much just came together for the win,” said the Tom Zont Racing /RCR backed Mackiewicz. Kyle Nelson followed him in both the heat and main events for second. Nelson, “It went pretty good. I was pushing hard. I had some really good lines but I made some mistakes and couldn’t capitalize on anything. I’m usually a lot better at the outdoor tracks, but try to race here a lot.” Brian Krohn and Sam Shamie finished third and fourth ahead of Jimmy Epifanio. The +30B class had nineteen riders. Off the start, Adam Fusinetti had the best reactions to grab the holeshot. Jeffery Evensen was in second, and immediately went to looking for a way around Fusinetti. Just after fin-

ishing the first lap a good inside outside move allowed Evensen to make the pass, and from there the race was all his. Fusinetti had some pressure from Brian Carey early, but then pulled away a bit by mid moto. Coming through the pack, Jesse Keith climbed up to fourth by mid moto, then made a late pass on Carey for third as Kevin Quest rounded out the top five. Shane Williams kept it simple in the 65Jr class as he took the holeshot and led all the way to the checkers. Shawn Thompson quickly pulled into second and ran with Patrick Murphy in third. Thor Rick and Conner Burger rounded out the top five. Tommy Fortune Jr took the 65cc Beginner class win ahead of Garrett Ward. Alex Moss finished third after a fourth in his heat race where Patryk Pietrak beat him. Tyler Evensen won the 65Sr class, “I really wanted to win the race, and desire got it done. I stayed out of the big ruts and went outside them as fast as I could. The whoops were my best today. I’d like to thank dad for all the help.” Pro Action/ White Knuckle Racing/ Smith/UFO backed April Roper took the Women’s

class win after sweeping both the heat and final. “I got the holeshot and then bobbled in the first turn, Kim got into me but I kept it going and got out front. The track is awesome. They made some changes that slowed it down, but that’s good as it made for better passing and it is more challenging. We had a good class tonight, I was thinking the threat of rain would scare everyone off, but the girls came and stuck it out.”
Dillan Boeke finished third in the fast Quad A class.
50Sr class rider Patrick Murphy.
In the Open A class Justin Kelly and Kevin Markwardt put on a great show fighting for the lead. Lap after lap the two went at it and just before the last lap
started Markwardt made a pass stick, then rode hard to hold on for another win in the night. Illinois Powersports/ DeCal Works rider and +25 class winner Kelly,
“I got a good start and as always Kevin was right on my butt. He put me under some pressure and he had some good lines. It was another good moto. I haven’t rode in six weeks after getting hurt at the last arenacross so this is the first time back on the bike. It feels good, I’m a little hesitant, but just making it count.” Markwardt, “The night went great. I was fortunate that Dave Antolak loaned me this Tuf Racing bike. It was bad that Tom had the get-off in the 250 race, but getting that win and this one put me on top in both classes. Justin got a great start in this race. I found some good lines to sneak around him. I was giving it all I could on the 250 and he was on the 450 so it made it even more fun. I love the changes (track), and anything different, I’m all for it. The soil was so good tonight. It was a good race. I’m pretty excited to get a couple wins tonight.” Markwardt is getting help from Tuf Performance Products, Venning Motorsports, Bel Ray, UFO, K&N, Sano, Decal Works, and Renthal.

cided there were enough racers present and said Race On. There was some good competition in the 125cc 2-stroke class today. In the first moto Yamaha rider Caden Roberts was the first out of the gates. Dalton Packard and Kodi Deribelbeis were on his rear fender. Deribelbeis made his move early and was the first to pass Roberts, followed by Packard of Spyke's KTM. Moving up fast from behind was Yamaha rider Scott Swinford. Deribelbeis was riding in first place, getting a lot of pressure from Packard. At times they were only bike lengths apart, and at times it looked like Packard was going to steal the lead. Deribelbeis kept pulling on the throttle and Packard couldn't get around him. Swinford, now riding in third place kept riding faster, but he couldn't catch the leaders. Deribelbeis won this moto, followed by Packard. In the second moto, Swinford shot out of the gates and took the lead. This time Packard and Deribelbeis had chase him. Swinford found his line, pulled the throttle back, and was on his way. Packard moved into second position and rode hard this moto. Deribelbeis wasn't far behind, but wasn't able to catch Packard. Swinford took the win this moto, followed by Packard. The 50cc (4-6) and (7-8) classes ran on the track at the same time. KTM rider Kennan Leis of the (7-8) class took the overall lead. He had some distance ahead of the next rider, KTM rider Trevor Colip of the (4-6) class. Leis went wide in one of the corners and got tangled up on the berm, and Colip passed him. Once Leis was back on the track, it didn't take him long to take back the overall lead. Leis finished 1-1 in his class, and Colip went 1-1 for the (4-6) class. The 85cc classes also ran on the track at the same time. Honda rider Chance Enyeart of the (12-15) class finished 1-1. Yamaha rider Jordan Parmley of the (9-11) class was the overall leader and finished 1-1 in his class. In the Schoolboy 1 class Suzuki rider Levi Johnson blasted out of the gates to take the lead in the first moto. He looked comfortable, rode well, and pulled ahead of the other riders. Behind him Kodi Deribelbeis and Dalton Packard were battling each other again. Packard rode hard and pressured Deribelbeis the entire moto, but couldn't get around him. Johnson won, followed by Deribelbeis.
In the second moto it looked like Packard had finally had enough, and he shot out of the gates ahead of everyone else. Packard looked more comfortable and rode well. This time Deribelbeis was the one who had to apply the pressure. While Deribelbeis was trying to put some pressure on Packard, Johnson was pushing Deribelbeis. Johnson got around Deribelbeis, which put him in second. Packard won this moto, followed by Johnson. In the +40 class Honda rider Rod Vigar went 1-1. Eric Renkeaberger and Jerry Connett had some good battles. Renkeaberger was able to hold Connett off both motos. After the races were done, the staff of Read's Racing Unlimited decided to have an open ride. The open ride was for several hours and everyone enjoyed the extra seat time. Cipala Tops Rapid Angels Hill Climb Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin - May 22 By Andy Kawa
A
Logan Cipala took the honors of fast time of the day.
Local rider Andy Eichinger narrowly edged out Jessica Prebe for first place in the 125cc class.
severe storm may have ended the 51st running of the Rapid Angels hillclimb a little early, but fans got to see some great racing before the clouds rolled in. As reports of tornados and severe thunderstorms swept through the area, hometown rider Luke Parmeter swept four classes. “I had a feeling all weekend the first round would be key to victory. I tried to make the first ride count and luckily it worked out,” said Parmeter. When the first round of racing ended, race officials called off the second round of racing due to weather. Parmeter’s first round times were enough to clinch the 250, 450, 750, and 4-stroke classes. “I’d like to thank LPmotocross, 4MX Graphics, Golden Eagle Log Homes, and Andy Kawa Photography for all the support.” Ellsworth, Wisconsin’s Logan Cipala took home fast time of the day on an impressive ride that left other riders almost a full second behind. The hill featured four jumps, with a 50-foot gap between the first and second jump. This massive gap forced most riders to roll the first jump. Cipala, however, had other plans. After grabbing a hand full of throttle on the holeshot, Cipala launched his KX500 up the first jump and nearly doubled the second ledge. Cipala soaked up the hard landing and successfully made his way towards the top. In the end, Cipala’s 7.435 was enough to bring home fast time of the day. Cipala also earned a fourth in 250cc and second in 450cc. The Cipalas had another rider earn a victory, this time in the mini division. Younger brother Luke Cipala edged out Ellsworth, Wisconsin’s Casey Paider in both the 65cc and Mini Jr classes. Frontenac, Minnesota’s Jacob Prebe earned two victories for the day, winning both the 200cc and Stock 0400cc on his KX250F. Prebe also earned third in the 600cc class. Jacob’s younger brother Nathan won the Mini Sr. class onboard his Honda CR85. Speaking of family acts, the Degross family left with two first place trophies as Darren Degross won the Senior class with a time of 8.143, and Zachary Degross won Open Stock
with a time of 9.051. Zachery, son of Darren, also took a hard-earned second place in the super competitive 600cc class with a time of 7.506. The Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club issued a statement thanking everyone for coming out and apologizing for the delayed start. Few riders grumbled though as the early ending got them home safely and out of the storm’s path. other Nature smiled upon South Fork Dirt Riders with great weather. After lots of rain leading up to this event everyone thought it was going to be a mud bath, but that was not the case at all. The track crew did a great job and the dirt was perfect! With a great track for the riders it allowed them to hammer down chasing after the District 17 Bonus points and a trip to Ponca City. Even with a great track it’s sad when the biggest talk in the pits is the price of gas! Even with the high cost of fuel, motocross is still a great family sport. Even with great weather one rider causing a storm was Suzuki rider Zach Loehr. In the 250B class on a 125, Loehr shot to the front and took the win. KTM two-stroke rider Jake Grafelman took second with Honda rider Devin Campbell third. In the second moto Loehr was on the gas and took the moto win again. Second this moto went to Decal Works Suzuki rider Zach Corman. In the first moto Corman had a problem and was late to the gate but was able to finish tenth in the moto and fifth overall. Third for the moto went to Grafelman who finished second overall. The next class Loehr stormed though was again one of the biggest at the track, the 125cc class. I have talked about this class before but it just amazes me that six brands of bikes are racing this class today. Out front Loehr took the moto wins and the overall. Honda rider Jacob Smothers kept Loehr honest and was also on the gas and ready to take over if he made a mistake. That mistake never came and Smothers finished second both motos. Yamaha rider Joe Aumiller put in a great ride and finished third. One long time rider that was still on the

In +30A Walton battled with KTM rider Todd Huston each moto, but today was Waldo’s taking both moto wins. Another class I love to watch is Open C. This class has some good riders, and almost always great racing and action. In the first moto Yamaha rider Skyler Harkless rode well and took the win. Tigerton Qualifiers draw ‘em in Tigerton, Wisconsin - May 1 By Pete Emme

a very talented Kost. “I got around him but then I endoed over the big jump and I got a little bit out of rhythm and then Andy got back around me to take the win,” said a respected Reek. Reek failed to make the gate for the second moto because of fear of running his freshly modified 125cc in the cold weather. That allowed Kost to get another holeshot, this time ahead of Justin Wolf, who had fallen in the first moto. Hass got around Wolf early
he MotoZone at Tigerton put on a double header motocross race that included the Area Qualifier for Loretta Lynn’s, Ponca City Qualifier and the first round of the Midwest Mega Series. It was cold and windy and most certainly felt like spring in northeast Wisconsin. This was the second year in a row that the MotoZone had held the qualifiers and the entries were in abundance throughout the two days of racing. Riders from Washington, Alabama, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin were in attendance. Nearly 500 entries total. It was good to get that first race in the books for many, including myself, even in the frigid conditions. We just need a little help with Mother Nature to warm things up. The 125Jr class started out with a bang as Caledonia, WI’s Andy Kost nailed #180 Eric Goodson of Indiana in the 450A class. the opening moto holeshot, followed closely by Adam Reek and Jeffery Stewart. on but Wolf eventually got him back. Nelson pulled another holeshot in the second moto but Baumert quickly got around him and rode as hard as he could to put another statement in as he won both motos of College Boy. Finishing second in the moto was Nelson and with 2-2 scores, netting him second overall ahead of Matthew Tranetzke who tallied 4-3 tallies. In the 250B Modified class, Baumert stole the holeshot over a ton of regulars at the facility. Baumert was followed by Warren Nelson, Lucas Lowe, and Adam Reek. Zack Masch tried to get around Reek on the first lap down in the waterhole, but was pushed wide and simply had to ride off the track allowing Reek to put some ground on him. The top three positions remained unchanged until Lowe went down in the uphill sand whoop injuring his wrist. This allowed some breathing room for Reek as he held down the third spot. Jacob Boss was working his way through the pack on his Yamaha and finally got into fourth ahead of Masch by the end of the moto. The second moto was a carbon copy for the leader, Baumert, as he ripped another holeshot. This time he was being chased by Boss, Nelson, Reek and Tyler Skodras. Nelson finally made the move and got himself into the second spot while Boss settled into third just ahead of Skodras. The Michigander, Nelson, rode to consistent tallies of 2-2 for second overall while the Madison native Boss, went 4-3 for third overall, a great finish for him. Sam Long, who hails from West Bend, WI, hasn’t won in a while and with Tigerton being a favorite track of his, it was only fitting for him to get back on top of the winner’s circle in the 250A class. Vaughn Mays was out to the lead in the first moto of 250A, followed by Long, Andy Lieders and Joe Dretzka. Mays who ran strong here last year during the qualifier, looked just as good in this moto. Usual front runner Nathen LaPorte struggled during the opening lap as he was as far back as seventh. On lap three, Long made his move on the smooth riding Mays and CYCLE USA, June 2011

found himself in the lead. Long, charged hard out front and eventually took the checkers in first over Mays and LaPorte. “I got off to a good start in the second position and Vaughn and I were battling it hard for 2-3 laps. I finally got around him in the bottom corner and rode my own race to end up winning,” said Long. Long got the short start nailed down as he snuck into the inside of Mays in the second moto, then Dretzka moved into second by the time they hit the left hand sweeper. Dretzka, Mays and LaPorte battled it out for the second spot. Long quickly found himself with a pack of hungry A riders looking to make the kill, but he put his head down and checked out with the much needed and decisive victory. “I just went out there and ripped the holeshot and then I made a mistake to allow Mays to get right behind me, luckily I had the inside position and stayed in first place and led the rest of the race,” said Long. Finishing second overall was Mays with his consistent tallies of 2-2 while LaPorte rode through the pack to finish third overall with 3-3 scores. Long also took another big overall win, in the 450A class. Long went 4-1 for the overall edging out Mays with 2-4 scores. Taking the opening moto win in the class was Eric Goodson from Indiana. Goodson went down as the 30 mph win set him a sailing over the 100 foot plus leap and into a heap in the breaking bumps. Goodson was alright and went on to finish in 13th, good enough to qualify in sixth overall. Longtime District 16 rider Jim Heilman’s son, Nick, decided to give it a go in the 450C division, a decision that paid off well as he rode to a cool 2-1 score for the overall ahead of Tanner Walters and Robert Manke. Another longtime D16 rider, Matt Maier, took his new 450 fuel injected Yamaha to 1-1 tallies in the Junior +25 division. It wasn’t easy as he had to fend off a charging Dustin Pulley in both motos. And, in the Women’s class it was none other that Kirsten Raemisch putting a licking on the field as she edged out Kayla Solheid, Ashley Densow and the rest of the pack. Mother’s Day weekend at Fun Valley Montezuma, Iowa - May 7/8 By Tracy Petrak Photos by Dave McMurrin

un Valley was the perfect place for Mother's Day and a weekend of racing. Racing on Saturday was kicked off under perfectly sunny skies and warm temperatures. In the +30B/C class all the bikes shot out of the gate headstrong. When the dust cleared Dustin Roskop was sitting at the gate with a stalled bike. Timothy Mohror led the race followed close by Craig Dostal, with Roskop making his way up in the ranks. On the final
Kevin Goette had a good weekend in Schoolboy and 250B.
lap Roskop was closing in on Mohror and Dostal but was a little too late. Mohror took the checkered flag with Dostal right behind him. Roskop settled for a third place finish after the motivated ride. In the second moto everyone left the gate together with Roskop leading as Mohror pushed from behind. Roskop held on and took the win this time. In the Supermini class #4 Jordan Harnish was a dominant force. Everyone kept pace with each other staying in the same positions throughout the moto with Harnish taking first. In the second moto Harnish took the win again followed by Damian Benson and Sam Campbell. Not to overshadow, the remaining riders made them work hard for the victories. With the closing of the day’s events there were plenty of stories and smiles to go around. Perfect for a place called Fun Valley! Sunday morning started off with a cold fog. After the Mother’s Day well wishes and a prayer for all, the fog lifted, the sun was out and the bikes fired up. The Schoolboy class came off the gate with Taylor Simons followed by John Martens and Kevin Goette. The three were running fender to fender. Goette went down but gained his composure and got right back into the race. The win went to Simons followed in by Martens and Goette. The second moto proved to be one of revenge. The excitement escalated as they rounded the track and with each lap the victory was within anyone’s reach. In the final lap coming right up to the finish Simons was nearing the crest when Goette looked like he pushed the nitro button and sailed past… taking the win. That’s the type of racing everyone comes to see! Obviously Goette’s adrenalin was still at peak level when he was lin-
ing up for the 250B race. Goette was going to kick some butt and take names later. Again he stayed in a third to fourth place level through the first two laps. Mike Leonard kept the lead until the third lap when he went down. With great racing by all of the riders in the class Goette again pushed his limit and took the win at the finish line passing Jacob Harnish. This could have easily been a photo finish. Thanks to the Fun Valley crew as they did a great job in accommodating the demands of their riders and spectators. 5/8/11: 50Jr: 1.Jace Robinson 2.Kaiden Knaack 3.Clayton Fishback 4.Kailin Chadek 5.Keaton Roskop 50Sr: 1.Paxton Jobe 2.Jarrett Robinson 3.Jada Murphy 4.Isaac Moyle 5.Harley Howell 65Jr: 1.Dylan Smith 2.Jacob Dakovich 3.Chase Cooper 4.Kaden Mohror 5.Ruger Brown 65Sr: 1.Ryley Helle 2.Drew Lubka 3.Nicolas Bianchi 85Jr: 1.Dylan Smith 2.Jacob Dakovich 3.Chase Cooper 4.Jesse Aitchison 5.Drew Lubka 85Sr: 1.Blake Halstead 2.Cole Needham 3.Haylee Peterman 4.Damian Benson 5.Cass Mc Keag 125: 1.Corey Jacobe 2.Jordan Harnish 3.Aaron Miller 4.Mark Bonnell 14-24B/C: 1.Jacob Harnish 2.Corey Jacobe 3.Dakota Anderson 4.Steven Martens 5.Michael Larson Women: 1.Kayla Allers 2.Haylee Peterman 3.Keshia Cooke 4.Bridgette Lubka 5.Darcy Goette SuperMini: 1.Jordan Harnish 2.Blake Halstead 3.Damian Benson 4.Sam Campbell 5.William Check Schlby: 1.Taylor Simons 2.Kevin Goette 3.Steven Martens 250A: 1.Colin Hickman 2.Ty Tyrrell 3.Jordan Ihle 4.Brennon Myers 5.Randy Hanson 250B: 1.Mike Leonard 2.Jacob Harnish 3.Kevin Goette 4.Chase Conis 5.Taylor Simons 250C: 1.Cody Ely 2.Christian Mcdonald 3.Michael Lohrer 4.Kayla Allers 5.Stone Schildroth Open A: 1.Colin Hickman 2.Ty Tyrrell 3.Jordan Ihle 4.Brennon Myers 5.Randy Hanson Open B: 1.Mike Leonard 2.Chase Conis 3.Michael Larson 4.Shay Moore Open C: 1.Cody Ely 2.Dakota Timmins 3.Michael ohrer 4.Stone Schildroth 5.Austin Moorman +25A: 1.Al Wolfgram 2.Tad Tyrrell 3.Brandon Schult +25B/C: 1.Taylor Franklin +30B/C: 1.Dustin Roskop 2.Anthony Gage 3.Michael Tremmel +40A: 1.Ernie Peterman 2.Mark Bonnell +40B/C: 1.Anthony Gage 2.Cole Seip 3.Michael Petrak 4.Christopher Chadek
