Big Woods equals Big Fun Wabeno, Wisconsin - September 23/24 By Gordon Lunde Photos by John Newton

N

orthern Wisconsin in the fall is a magical place. The colors, the woods, and the cool crisp air combine for wonderful times in the outdoors. Add 160+ dual sport motorcycle riders and the fun multiplies exponentially! The annual Big Woods 200, put on by the Wisconsin Dual Sport Riders club, is the dual sport ride of the year to attend. The club has a handle on what riders like and need for a good experience, and they supply it all every year. This year’s ride was a combination of good weather and sloppy trails, sounds perfect, right. Ride day started with threatening skies but the day turned out wonderful. The sloppy trails were thanks to some previous rains in the area. Deep water surprised many folks including your intrepid reporter. I was able to avoid a bath by judicious use of the throttle, but others didn’t survive as well. Many took a muddy splash in some deep puddles. One rider got the surprise of his life when a black bear came charging out of the woods and ran into the rider as he was traveling down a county highway. Fortunately, the rider managed to keep his bike upright and pull over to the side of the road. When he looked back, the bear was laying flat out in the middle of the road. The rider turned around, and as he slowly approached the bear, the bear jumped up and ran off! Apparently the crash had knocked him out cold for a bit. Shaken, but none the worse for the incident, the rider finished his ride with a

great story to tell. Lunch was served once again at the Silver Cliff Memorial Picnic Grounds. This annual fund raiser for the local American Legion post coincides perfectly with this ride and is enjoyed by the riders. Nearly 100 different kinds of home made chili are on the menu as well as fresh baked deserts. “Ride to

eat, eat to ride.” At the end of the 120 mile ride on Saturday, dinner was served back at ride headquarters at the Wabeno fairgrounds. Steaks and all the trimmings served by the Lions Club are always a treat after a long day in the seat. A raffle was the after dinner entertainment with proceeds shared by the club and a donation to the Logging Museum and Parks Board in Wabeno. To date the WDSR club has donated over $48,000 to local charities from this ride. A separate silent raffle was put on by the family of Dave Iverson, a local rider who was enthusiastically involved with the club. The Iversons gathered up all of Dave’s off-road gear and decided to sell it off for charity. Fifteen hundred dollars was raised in that raffle and Dave’s family donated that to the Townsend, WI food pantry. After all this there is a huge bonfire at the back end of the grounds for all those too pumped to go to bed. And, on Sunday, another 80 miles of beautiful north woods roads and trails. Fresh air, great food, motorcycles and helping the less fortunate, does it get any better? Find out your self next year at the 2012 Big Woods 200. Watch widualsportriders.org for future information.

Time to start thinking of ice racing. Ice racing is returning to Cedar Lake Indiana for a full season of racing in 2012. Brisk winter weather is expected again this year allowing the Moto on Ice motorcycle club to host both 1/4 mile short track and GP style endurance racing. This will be the club's 4th year promoting the series, one that has been gaining speed each year. Club President Jeff Fredette, "4 years ago we were just excited to bring ice racing back to northern Indiana. We've been lucky with the weather and have a lot of support from the town, the DNR and our sponsors. The racing has been great, the lake is perfect for GP racing. It is just too much fun". The stakes go up this season as the Cedar Lake Winter Carnival is planned in conjunction with the racing events January 7 and the 28th. The winter carnival atmosphere will add to the racing excitement and bring community support to the racing. The series kicks off racing January 1st and runs each Sunday thru February weather permitting. Traditional short track racing for both bikes and ATVs are held, with moto-style, endurance GP races on the long course being the premiere event. Both bikes and ATVs run multiple moto format on a groomed GP course up to 4 miles long. The series concludes with a year-end banquet and hipoint trophy presentation. The club also sponsors a ICE racing motorcycle swap meet to help riders get their equipment dusted off and dialed in for ice competition. This year, Sunday November 27th will be the day to empty your garage and load up your truck. The swap meet will also give Moto on ICE club member a chance to answers questions and help get riders set for the season with fenders, tires and tuning tips. Fredette added, "With the weather,

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... you have to be ready to go as soon as we get ice. The swap meet helps get people thinking about making the transition from dirt to ice and getting tires and fenders worked out." Brothers Motorsports has reopened the mx track in Brainerd, MN and have also moved KTM motorcycles and top of the line snowmobile/ watercraft rentals to this location. The track is open for practices and there will be friday night races next summer. There will also be an off-road loop constructed this coming spring. The track and shop are all on the same property, so if you need parts or accessories its all right here. We hope to bring back motocross in the Brainerd area, and at the same time have a great place just to come and ride. Its going to be a family setting so adults and kids are all welcome. Along with motorcycles, atvs will also be welcome to the track. We hope to build this into a great family riding area. For more information call 218-454-2767.

If there’s a will, there’s a way! By Sally Anderson

H

ave you ever sat back and watched someone run a marathon and thought to yourself “I wish I could do that?” Or saw an athlete with a disability achieve goals and think to yourself, “Wow, that’s so cool.” I have a story to share that hopefully will inspire all that read this and show each of you that Bob Mrozek’s saying “If there’s a will, there’s a way,” is reachable to all, no matter what it is you want to do in life. Bob Mrozek grew up in Rice, MN, and, just like every other kid, he played trucks, enjoyed hanging out with his friends, riding bikes, building snow forts in the winter and enjoying summer days. Bob had in the back of his mind as a kid he was going to race dirt bikes someday and prove to himself he could do what he had longed to do and thought was so amazing when he would watch the races on tv or be a spectator at a race. His dream came true. He started racing dirt bikes around age 15 and was having

the time of his life. He was learning how to be a good sport and good competitor as well as achieving a goal he had set years ago. No one, including Bob, would have dreamed what was going to happen 1 ½ years later at the age of 17. Bob was in a serious bike accident that left him paralyzed from the middle of his chest down. Suffering from a T5 complete spinal cord injury left him with no use of his feet, legs, stomach or back muscles. The spinal injury required 10 of his vertebras to be fused to-

gether. He also has 6 plates, 16 screws and 2 metal bars on each side of his spine holding it together. What was Bob going to do? How was he ever going to live a normal life again? What would he be able to do being paralyzed? All of these questions and many more went through Bob’s mind and with faith and the help from the big man above, Bob knew exactly what he had to do. He was given a second chance at life and although his lower body movement was gone, he wasn’t dead – he was alive! This positive attitude is what got Bob through this trying time. He was determined to still enjoy life, beat the odds, and find ways to prove “if there’s a will, there’s a way.” And Bob did just that. During the 2008-2009 season, Bob got on a quad and rode for the first time since his accident. His love for the sport that he had always wanted to do as a child was still a possibility. It was reality, not just a dream. He wasn’t afraid from his crash, and wanted more than anything to feel the rush of adrenaline and excitement that a rider feels in a race. With the great support from his family and friends, Bob outfitted his Yamaha Banshee with a man-made shift extension attachment. He welded the foot shifter with an extension rod that came up and allowed him shift. This allowed Bob to be able to be competitive on his Banshee. He had a custom seat made that would “hold” him in place and give him some back support. His feet would be strapped down to the nerf bars/foot bracket and his body held in place on the quad with a wide strap. Somewhat like a seat belt. Nothing could stop him from racing. He was ready to go. Even with the few tumbles Bob and his quad took together, he never changed his mind and continued to push forward to reach his goals. Bob was able to achieve a championship win in the Quad Open class in 2010 at Race Freex in Brainerd, MN by earning two – first place wins and the rest

second place. This opened doors and possibilities even more for Bob. In May of 2011, Bob purchased a Suzuki 450 and with the determination, drive, will, time and help from sponsors, Bob outdid himself and made a very competitive racing quad. It took approximately five weeks to complete the fabrication on his Suzuki, but once done, this was truly custom made for him. He developed and fabricated a football like chin guard for support and has it attached to all of his helmets. He designed knee pads that are attached to each side of the gas tank of the quad to give some much needed relief to his knees and leg muscles. It also pushes his legs outward; giving him the feel the quad is wider than it is. His feet are strapped in using snowboard bindings which are permanently fixed to the nerf bars. He uses a strap to hold his body in place while riding. 4-5 back supports are worn to help build a more rigid core section to take the brunt of the landings after he jumps, to give the rest of his body some relief, and also it helps him to keep his balance. He was sponsored by Flexx Handle bars which now give him some much needed relief on his arms, wrists and hands as he races his quad. The handle bars flex and move to take some of the stress off his upper body. Rox Bar Risers provided him with risers for the handle

bars. This allows Bob to not have to bend or lean forward. They are raised to his sitting level. The most advanced addition to this quad is the shifting with a push of a button. He did months of research and found a company called Kiltronic. They specialize in making electronic gear changers. Bob knew that with a few modifications he could get this product to work with his Suzuki and have the ability to push buttons to shift his quad. With a thumb push, Bob controls the gear he is in. The shifting is so seamless, smooth and fast, and more consistent which allows him to be a top competitor in the Production 450C class. Bob’s great personality, support from his family, friends and girlfriend Jess, is what keeps him going in everything he does. He believes that “life is a roller coaster… God gives you what you can bare and everything happens for a reason. You should never let any obstacle get in the way of your life or let it discourage you from your life goals.” Currently living in St. Cloud, MN, Bob hopes to continue to advance in the Production 450C class where he races his Suzuki 450 and also continue in the Open C class where he races his Banshee. His goals continue to rise each year both in motocross and life. His goals for the 2012 season are to maintain his current sponsors, as well as gain more that would

like to support him now and into the future. To purchase a good race pair of shocks to help take the stress off his body. He would like to train harder in the off season and continue to stay healthy so when races start in the spring he will be more ready than ever. He also has hopes to someday have a factory sponsorship and compete at a national level. When asked if he would compete in the X-Games if quad racing was a competing sport and he said “Most definitely. That would be awesome.” Aside from racing, Bob wants to become an elementary phy ed teacher and minor in DAPE (developing adaptive physical education). He feels with his life experiences he would have a good relationship with the younger children and be able to connect with them and help them achieve goals they set for themselves. He also enjoys opportunities where he is asked to speak about his story, as he has done in the past for USA today, United Cerebral Palsy organization and a radio talk show out of Baltimore, MD. This is a young man that has beaten the odds and doesn’t let his disability get him down or stop him from anything he sets his mind to. Maybe you shouldn’t either.

Picture perfect at Fun Valley Montezuma, Iowa - August 20 By Missi Thede & Tracy Petrak

S

aturday at Fun Valley was picture perfect: sunshine, a cool breeze and temps in the lower 70s. First off the gate was the 250B class with #602 Dakota Anderson taking the holeshot with Mitch Simon and Corey Jacobe nipping at his rear fender. Within the first lap Jacobe took over the lead with Anderson putting the pressure on. Simon had a setback which allowed Chase Conis to take over third. Jacobe held on to take the win. Second moto had Jacobe in the lead with Simon in second and Anderson third. Jacobe spread out his lead to secure first place for the day. Overall results for the day were Jacobe, Anderson, Simon and Conis. The biggest class of the day, 250C had Jeremy Banks taking the holeshot with Michael Lohrer, Stone Schildroth and Dakota Timmins filling the top four. Further in the pack there was also a tight battle between Nick Ryan and Dylan Duvall. During the second lap, Banks maintained his lead with Lohrer still heavily pursuing him for that first position. Timmins made the pass on Schildroth for third around the corner berm after the step-up. Ryan moved up in positioning and took Schildroth’s spot right before the double doubles with another duo of riders also in pursuit for higher positioning consisting of Brandon Teeple and Christian McDonald. With the last lap and high pressure - Lohrer finally achieved his goal of taking the first position away from Banks. Schildroth took fifth as he moved up in positioning over McDonald. Lohrer took the win with Banks in second, Ryan third and Timmins in fourth. Second moto Lohrer led the pack with Banks in second and Ryan third. Through the cloud of dust trailed the rest of the pack with McDonald, Duvall, Timmins, and Teeple side by side through the uphill whoops. With the second lap Ryan took the lead over Lohrer which really put the pressure on Lohrer to make up time to gain back his positioning. Timmins made his way up to fourth. Lohrer ended up taking back his lead. Teeple went down right in front of Schildroth right before the uphill triple which ended up taking Schildroth down also. Duvall took full advantage of the advanced positioning. The race ended with Lohrer taking the win, Ryan in second, Banks third and Timmins fourth. Overall results for the day were Lohrer, Ryan, Banks and Timmins. A sunny Sunday greeted the riders for the day of competition as the season nears its end. When the announcer stated that the 50Srs were in staging and there were eight 8

riders on the gate, this became a good class to watch. At the drop of the gate Gage Steburg led the pack. Jarrett Robinson stayed behind Steburg throughout all the laps ahead of Eli Hoversten. Steburg took the front spot again in the second moto. His hand was heavy on the throttle with Robinson behind. These two took a lead that extended with each lap and finished with the first and second spot. Ethan McMahon finished third. The next moto was a mix of two classes

being 14-24B/C and Schoolboy. The bikes were at the gate and it dropped... shooting out with the instant lead was Conrad Schipper. Dirt was flying and with this group of riders being full of youth and speed there was no better place to be but in the lead. Getting through the first curve was Corey Jacobe, Jacob Harnish and Dakota Anderson respectively. In the third lap Jacobe kept his second position intact. Harnish and Anderson kept a good battle with the Schoolboy class leader of Chase Stevenson. Schipper took his win in

the first moto with Jacobe second, Harnish third and Anderson fourth. Schipper again got the holeshot and more in moto two. It was just like watching the bunny shoot out at a dog race, keeping just

enough distance from the pack. Jacobe, Harnish and Anderson rounded each lap in the same sequence and distance from each other finishing the moto in the same order. Then there was a small rumble of the Quad Jr. class at the gate just waiting for it to drop. Jumping out was #44 Casey Beaver and Cole Borowiak feeling his exhaust. Beaver didn’t let up through each round and left so much dust Borowiak and Gramm Meyer had to have tasted it by the end. The second moto heated up with a pure and true battle between Borowiak and Beaver. The race got going and those two quad racers gave everyone a race to talk about. In each lap they were on each other with Borowiak leading. Through the final whoops section before the finish Beaver was up on the side of Borowiak, and determined to take his first place spot. They came up to that elusive checkered flag and practically touched each other, Borowiak took that win with Beaver having to settle for second place this time. Not to be left out, Meyer came in to third where it was a little safe at the time! Hot Racing at Megacross Mendota, IL - September 17 By Dave Henry Photos by Brett Wilkinson

R

ound 8 of the Megacross Shootout series treated everyone to much cooler temperatures and perfect racing conditions. While the weather may have been cool, the racing action was hot. One of the hottest classes of the night was Open A. Fourteen racers lined up and Kevin Markwardt pulled the holeshot on his Honda. As they completed lap one it was Markwardt holding down the lead over Kyle White on his BWR backed Honda, Rock River Powersports backed Tommy Hofmaster, TZR, Decal Works backed Scott Zont and Illinois Powersports backed Justin Kelly. Could this be the night that someone knocks Hofmaster off the top spot of the box? As they completed the second lap, Hofmaster had worked his way into second, with Vaughn Mays rounding out the top five. Lap five saw Hofmaster and Markwardt go back and forth as they came across the start straight and into the left hander. First it was Hofmaster to the inside and into the lead, then in the next turn, Markwardt dove under to take the lead back. They came across the announcers stand table top side by side and the crowd was on their feet. Markwardt had his eye on the inside line and was ready to rail the nice line that was there, while Hofmaster was blazing around the outside hoping to find an edge in the next turn. Markwardt caught the rut but leaned too far and went down, slipping back to sixth place! The final laps held in check and as the checkered flag flew, it was Hofmaster, once again taking the win. Rounding out the podium was White and Zont. 250A saw many of the same racers as Open A and the racing was just as close. Pulling the holeshot was Hofmaster on his YZ250 2 stroke. At the end of lap one it was Hofmaster, followed by White, Maxx Malatia, Zont and Mays. At several different times during the main Malatia, Zont and Mays battled back and forth to see who would come away with the final step on the podium. In the end, it was Hofmaster with the win, with White turning in an awesome ride and keeping Tommy honest the whole time. Malatia

As the two worked their way through the first lap it was Walker with the lead. Mark Mannce was third, just ahead of Kyle Poska. At the line to complete lap two, you could tell that Walker was feeling the heat from Utech and he was going to do all he could to stay out front. However, that is when it went all wrong, and just a little slip and he went down. Utech was now in the lead followed by Mannce, Poska, Jake Cook and Conner Robinson. Walker ended up with a DNF, but he definitely had the speed for the win. In the C classes, the first up was 250C. Drew Jackson, son of famous IL racer Junior Jackson, had a nice holeshot, but pushed wide in the first turn. Coming out with the lead was Lucas Hayes on his Kawasaki. Lucas is the son of longtime racer and fast Senior, Dave Hayes. As the twentythree racers crossed the line to complete lap one, it was Hayes in the lead, followed by Kody Smith and Nick Campbell. As the white flag flew, it was Hayes, now stretching it out with a three second lead over Smith. Third was Jake Cinkus 14-24 class winner Jody Walker. on his Venning Motosports backed Honda. last turn side by side, with Bounds squeaking out third behind Boggio at the stripe. In +35, there is always a nice battle between Burton Lavens, Dave Hayes and Tim Damron. The holeshot was a neck and neck battle between Lavens and Hayes, but Lavens on his Yamaha emerged with the lead and that was all she wrote. Turbo never looked back, as he gradually built his lead to the end. A nice battle shaped up between Damron and Hayes, with Damron pulling out second place. +40 saw Steve Perkins pull the holeshot, closely followed by Dave Hayes. At the end of lap one, it was Perkins, Hayes, Larry Dean Bank, and Troy Quest. Hayes went on for the win. 14-24 B/C is another class at Megacross that provides a way for the top B/C riders to battle it out. With the holeshot was Kyle Somner on his Kawasaki. Somner’s lead was short lived, as a freight train of racers were on the move. At the end of the opening lap, Somner had fallen back to fourth behind Jody Walker, Colton Beard, and Jody Walker. Spizzirri wasn’t going to let Walker run away, as he began blitzing the whoops and kept it close. The second half of the race would see Spizzirri pull up side by side with Walker and try every move he could to get around the Honda mounted racer. In the end however, Walker was able to hang on for the win. 2 strokes always come out in full force at Megacross, and the 125 class once again

Paul Gerke finished fourth in the large 125cc class.

proved to be not only a very entertaining race, but a very fast one also. Pulling the holeshot was Robbie Hyson on his KTM, followed closely by Paul Gerke on his CR125. Gerke has been out all year due to knee surgery and this was his 1st race in 2011 at Megacross. Gerke is your reigning District 17 125 class champion and although this was his first outing of the year, he was not about to simply cruise around. Gerke held down second until the white flag, when he gave way to Tony Spizzirri who had his CR125 just singing around the track. As they crossed the line at the checkers, it was Hyson, followed by Spizzirri. Conner Robinson made his way into third in the last turn as he found a way around Gerke. Matt Mellott came home in fifth. Super Mini had Jordan Mackiewicz hold off Kyle Nelson, and put in a great showing for the win. RJ Mackenzie rode to a solid third place finish. In 85Jr/Sr, they went off the line together and it was RJ Mackenzie with the holeshot. At the end of lap one, it was Mackenzie with the lead, but 85Jr racer Dylan Boyd was all over him. You could tell that Jr racer Boyd wanted to prove something, racing against the Sr guys. On lap four Boyd dove to the lead after he crossed the start straight. It was now Boyd holding down the number one spot overall, with Mackenzie and Noah Taylor close. As the checkers flew it was Boyd with the win in 85Jr and overall in the race. Mackenzie took the win in 85Sr. 65Jr saw a dominating performance by Scotty Scamen. He blitzed around the outside of his competition on the holeshot and never looked back. Ethan Etes and Conner Burger put on a great battle for second, with Burger holding it at the end. 50cc 4-8 witnessed 16 racers line up to do battle, and coming out with the holeshot was Ryder Schnowske. Ryder was followed closely by Kevin Huddleston and the two soon pulled from the rest of the field. Schnowske cruised home for the win with Ian Murphy finishing in third. Schnowske also took home the win in 50Jr. 50Sr saw Kash Schnowske pull the holeshot, and the KTM mounted racer was flying. Schnowske was clearing the back

straight table tops with ease as he motored away for the win. Joe Quest finished second ahead of Collin Nodurft. Quads also show up to battle at Megacross in big numbers. Quad A was dominated by Justin Medine on his Yamaha. Justin pulled the holeshot and never looked back. Quad B had Devin Krontz taking the win on his Honda. In Quad C, it was once again, Ted Loomis on his retro Honda 250 2 stroke quad with the holeshot and going on to take the win in convincing fashion. Eli Lois came home second and Aaron Maier rounded out the podium. If you are a “lady” racer and want to battle it out with the top competition in the area, Megacross is the place to be. Pulling the holeshot, was April Roper on her Honda. The race saw a total of eight riders, with Roper pulling away each lap for the win. Alyssa Hailing was second with Kayla Miller rounding out the podium. Nearly 300 entries were treated with great weather, a free T-Shirt from Megacross and good purse and plaques as always. Hofmaster dominated once again. The B and C

classes were stacked as always. The series will come to an end for 2011 on October 15th with the Megacross Championship race and extra points towards the series. Hope to see you there. Don’t forget the season ends with GP racing comes to Fox Valley Off Road and both series join for that final event. GP, not moto, not woods, but a blend of all the fun stuff, less classes, longer motos, it’s going to rock! October 30th! ody Jenner from Neoga, Illinois had one of those rare, perfect nights as he won all three classes he entered, and also claimed the prestigious Fast Time of the day award at the Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders night hill climb. Jenner was fast all night, setting the early fast time with a 3.478 second time on his Honda in the first round in the 450cc class to take the lead in that class into intermission. That time held up for the class win, with Matt Peters taking second and Lowell Durst Jr third. Jenner immediately lowered his fast time in the first round of the 600cc class to take that class lead into intermission. That would have held up for the class win, but Jenner followed it with an incredible high flying 3.369 second time on his second ride to seal the win and set a Fast Time that would not be seriously challenged. Joe McGurer claimed second with a 3.476 second run with Peters third. Jenner wasn’t finished, as he brought the CRF450 back in the 600cc 4-Stroke class and posted a 3.485 second time on his first round, which held up for that win. Incredibly, he carded an identical time on his second ride. Troy Camerer claimed second in 3.582 seconds with Kirk Gorsuch third. Mike Pulver was a double class winner, winning both of the stock wheelbase classes. He came from way behind in the 400cc Stock class, finding himself mired in 9th place at intermission, with Andy Fortner in the lead with a 3.968 second time. Pulver took the win in convincing fashion in the second round with a fine 3.812 second time. Fortner’s first round time held up for second place with Bill Miller close behind him with a 3.981 second time. In the Open Stock class, Pulver only had to take one ride, topping the hill in 3.828 seconds

on his CR500. No one could match that time in either round, with Mike Wargo the closest with a 3.887 second run and Joe McGurer third, barely slower than Wargo with a 3.982 second time, In youth class action, Andrew Fortner took the 85Jr class win with a 4.626 second first round ride on his CR85 Honda. That time was also good for the Youth Fast Time award. Reece Hutton was second with Levi Peters third. In other youth action, Brodie Bennett was the 50cc class winner with Alivia Young second. Derick Bell won the 65cc class with Fortner second, and Clayton Hirsch was the best of the 85Sr class riders with Jacob Bell second. Dyracuse Hare Scramble Wisconsin Rapids, WI - October 2 By Doug Forstner

T

he Rapid Angels Cycle Club hosted their annual fall hare scramble at Dyracuse Recreational Park in Rome, WI. Beautiful fall temps and a good rider turnout made for some exceptional fall racing. The day started out with the 50cc class taking to the small, but manageable course built just for these riders. Will Halverson took the lead and came home with the victory over Nadia Ellingson and Christian Bilansky. The 9:00am start for 85cc, 65cc and Women took off from the Supercross track and headed out to the west wood sections for an hour long race. First out of the gate was 85cc runner Collin Jahns followed by 65cc class and then the Women. At the end of lap one, it was Mason French who was the first one through the transponder area closely followed by Stephanie Steuck. Steuck who made her way through the big 65cc class closed the gap on French in a hurry. At the end of lap two she was leading the group and never looked back to win the group overall and the Women’s class. French put in solid laps to lock up the 65cc class and Jahns finished first in the 85cc division. These three class leaders were the only riders to finish six laps on the long course. The next group out on the one hour course was made up of Vintage, +50 and C class riders. Cody Steuck was able to get the holeshot in C class, and never looked back. He led from start to finish and put in a solid ride. Local rider Joe Haasl took a freshly prepped RM370, which I think was only 30 some years old, and got the holeshot in the Vintage class, but was soon dis-

placed by John Strangfeld for the lead. Once into a pace, Pete Laubmeier put his vintage machine in motion and overtook Strangfeld for the lead on lap two. On lap three, Strangfeld retook the lead and was just barely keeping Laubmeier at bay. On lap four, Laubmeier made a mistake and Strangfeld stretched out a lead and continue on for the win. Laubmeier was able to compose himself to finish second. John Montgomery made a last lap pass on Jorge Caballero to round out the podium.

The final group of the day had the AA, A, B and +40 classes for an extended course two hour run. This year the club set up the course to run backwards, and all the riders I talked too really like the flow of the course. First one through the transponder was AA rider Brandon Houts on his Yamaha YZ250. As he raced by me, I noticed that he had already ditched his goggles so I knew it could be a tough race for him if he didn’t maintain his lead. The area got some much needed rain the week prior to the race and some of the sections were pretty muddy and rutted. JD Friebel and Mat Herrington were hot on Houts path, and trying to stay with the leader. At the end of lap two Houts was in control and extending his lead. On lap three, Houts put down his best lap time, a 16:45 and of the almost 50 riders on the loop, no one else dropped below 17:00 minute time. Lap four saw a shakeup in the top runners. Herrington took over second place and Pete Laubmeier moved into the third spot with Strangfeld in his roost. As the race finished out the podium had Houts as the overall winner, Herrington in second and Laubmeier taking home the bronze. Frank Callabero put his Husqvarna on the top spot for A class and Jeff Schmidt also

went wire to wire for the win in B. John Beuchner showed the young guns that experience does help with racing as he won the +40 class, and beat some of the younger riders out in the group. The Rapid Angels did a great job setting up the three courses. All were rider friendly, so next year give it a shot. I know I’ll be out there next year because walking the entire course, shooting photos was fun, but not nearly as much as I could see the riders were having riding. Great racing at New Hartford New Hartford, Iowa - Sept. 24 By Missi Thede and Tracy Petrak

M

other Nature let us know that it was the second day of fall with a very brisk partly sunny morning with temperatures in the 40s. Regardless of the weather, everyone was ready for a great day of racing at New Hartford. With the track in prime condition, the 65 Seniors kicked off the race day. Drew Lubka got the holeshot with Ryley Helle and Blake Hoag right on his tail. Through the first lap Hoag moved into second as Helle dropped to third. In the third lap Hoag got his edge on Lubka and made the pass and increased the gap through the rollers to make sure he ensured his first place win. Second moto action had Hoag in the lead with Lubka second and Helle again all the way to the finish. With 85Sr coming off the gate Haylee Peterman got the holeshot with Justin Beach, Damian Benson and Travis Larson in pursuit. Going into the third lap Benson closed in and edged past Beach and was side by side making a three-pack with Peterman right before the center jump. Through the rollers Beach took back the second spot. With Peterman’s confidence raising through the roof that girl didn’t back down at all, but with the persistence of Beach he made his way past her as the racing stayed tight between the three riders and then Benson made his move right after the center jump as all three met at the corner berm again. Not knowing what was going to happen everyone waited for the shoot-out from the corner. The outcome? You guessed it – Peterman got her lead back with Benson and Beach right in pursuit. Beach made it past Benson again into second and the finish was then decided. With anticipation of this second moto race, Peterman got the holeshot but this time had extreme side by side pressure from Benson with Larson and Beach also side by side. Again the action repeated from the first moto with Peterman leading the way followed by Benson and Beach. Right before the second lap Benson made his move on Peterman and got past her. Benson increased the gap between the two riders to ensure that he would win this race as Beach still could not get past Peterman and ended up having a setback placing Larson in the third spot. went to Benson, Peterman and Larson which also set the overall for the day. The moto of the day was watching the +30B/C racers. Right out of the gates was Nicole Weis took charge. Matt Morris was on her with John Nenow hanging out in their dust. Weis stayed in front of Morris with each turn and straight, leaving no question she was ready to take the victory. In the final lap, Morris was on her back tire pushing until the final stretch where he overcame her solid lead and took the win. Weis took second with Nenow third. Now that was a race. Morris took the first place overall with Weis taking second place knowing she made Morris work for it. Nenow took third overall. Mees wins Brainerd Half Mile Brainerd, Minnesota - September 24 By Tim McBride

T

he cancellation of the Minnesota Mile to be held at the coveted Canterbury Downs due to the Minnesota government shutdown left a window of opportunity for K.T. Torbert and the good folks from North Central Speedway, and they jumped all over it. Round 18 of the AMA Grand National Championship Dirt Track Series was held at the slightly banked high-speed oval where the best flat track contenders in the world came to do battle. Michigan’s Jarred Mees piloted his Screamin Eagle XR750cc Harley to a wire to wire victory during the 25 lap Pro Twins Expert main event. Connecticut native Kenny Coolbeth slid his XR past Jake Johnson late in the race to steal second place. While celebrating his victory in front of a capacity crowd, Mees reflected on his performance, “I didn’t really expect to be the guy to beat; I figured it was going to be Coolbeth. I got a real good start and I just rode hard and I picked up on a couple things. I led at the halfway and I’m like, ‘all right, all right’ and I led it with five to go and thought ‘I’m going to get it, I’m going to get it!’ and sure enough we brought it home. It was really an unexpected win, it was really cool!” Some of the riders thought the track was a bit small to run the big twins on and in which case the Expert class would compete aboard single cylinder 450cc machines. Mees also elaborated on the subject, “The track was a little on the small side and I think it would be better if we rode singles here, but… I take that back… I really don’t want to run a single at a place like this because the fans don’t like it. It was a little on the small side, but we made due.” This was Mees’ fifth win on the season. On a Minnesota side note: Professional racer Jake Mataya rode his Harley Davidson

to a strong third place finish behind heat winner Mees and runner-up Coolbeth during his heat race, therefore qualifying directly to the main event. Unfortunately a mechanical failure forced the personable Blaine, Minnesota native to retire after nine laps of racing. The Pro Singles class main event saw Mikey Avila from California notch top honors aboard his Honda CRF450. James Rispoli from New York finished second and Gerrit Calles from Hartford South Dakota filled out the podium. Blaine Minnesota’s Nick Mataya (Jake’s younger brother) finished in the twelfth position and Cambridge Minnesota’s Conner Anderson finished thirteenth in tonight’s talent-laden Pro Singles eighteen rider field.

Cole Anderson (Conner’s younger sibling) was running in second place during his qualifying heat race but a red flag due to a crash saw him get a bad restart and he unfortunately failed to qualify for the main. Second generation flat tracker Dan Jacobson qualified 18th during timed practice, but also did not make it to the main. Jacobson’s teammate Mac McGrew’s chances of making the main were dashed with a crash during one of his heat qualifiers. Chilman Tops Freeman Freeman, Indiana - October 9 By David Dunnuck Photos by Cheryl Dunnuck

T

he Hoosier Trail Riders have held a five race series for the last couple of years. This year, they divided the races between several D15 promoting clubs, with the final round being held at Bloomington PowerSports, Rayce Guthrie’s parent’s property near Freeman. This is a beautiful and scenic setting with rolling grass fields, creek bottoms and very tight single track. Bloomington Powersports stepped up and provided prizes and awards for every single participant in the event. The PeeWee racers were given a parade lap to ensure they were all comfortable with their machines and the track. With that complete, the riders meeting was held and the sound of the shotgun started the event. The course provided some very wide open grass straight-aways with some challenging offcamber trails. Louden Feltner and Garrett Mundy charged ahead of Ethan Sowder and by the end of the first lap had a comfortable gap on third place. Emma Schoolcraft was wasting no time in the 50 Injector class getting a comfortable lead early. In the Premix class, Feltner and Mundy were trading places and running tire to tire for the majority of the race. You could feel the excitement in the crowd as they realized the tight battle for the

victory that was forming. Feltner maintained the lead throughout the entire race and heading into the white flag lap. As the riders left

the scoring station, Mundy’s father could be heard yelling “This is it, make it happen”. As the two headed down the last downhill grass

section, Mundy was able to out power Feltner and make the pass going into the final woods section. In their final approach to the checkered flag, Feltner made every attempt to tuck his front tire in, but Mundy was able to hold on for the win. Back in the Injector class, Schoolcraft cruised to a comfortable victory. Mike Witkowski was ever so impressive in the Supermini ranks as he cruised to an overall victory by 2:02 over second place. The battle for second was much closer. Vincent Smith and Colton Wilkes were riding smooth and well. Smith took over second after the opening lap, extending the lead to twenty seconds on the final lap. In the 85cc class, Tate Guerrettaz wasted no time setting the pace and securing the win. Kayden Young wasn’t far behind at the end on lap one, and held a 0:42 lead over third place Dawson Dunnuck. Young struggled at the log crossing which was placed in the field near the spectator region. Dunnuck was able to close the gap, but never mounted much of a battle. Guerrettaz cruised to

the victory with Young and Dunnuck rounding out the top three. In the 65cc race Logan McNeil led the first lap with Langdon Feltner and Lance Maschino rounding out the top three. Feltner took the lead on lap two. Casey Moore moved into the top three, and cruised to the finish behind McNeil. We saw eighty-four entries in the big bike event, wrestling their machines for an hour and a half, with twenty-eight riders eventually finishing all six laps. The scoring team held up well throughout the event, recording 412 entries at the checkpoint. Alex Witkowski wasted no time setting

the pace on the first lap - turning a 15:56 lap time. Chase Guthrie filled the number two spot. Luke Chilman was next through the gates, followed by Gordon Young, who was on the gas, determined to move up. At the end of lap two, Witkowski still had the lead. The action on the track centered around Jeremy Moore, moving up fifteen spots to 39th overall. Chilman, Guthrie, Jesse Parr and Young rounded out the top five. While the race for the overall is always exciting, there is often other impressive battles happening at the individual class levels. There were nine riders in the Sr A class, with seven finishing all six laps. While Gordon Young was running in the top five overall, he was in hot pursuit by Brett Terchila, Jeff Ford and Rik Smits. At the midway point of the race, Young still had the Senior A lead. Rolling through the gates in second place was Ford, treating it like a rental - but still trailing by 0:22. Smits was in third place. Somewhere on the course during lap five Ford took over the

lead. Could it be this easy.... Ford remained in the lead during final lap staying ahead of Young who was trailing by ten seconds, and third place Smits. Back to the race for the overall, Witkowski was still in the lead at the midway point, doing his best to ensure the lead didn't change. Standing and balancing his bike through the gates in second place was Chilman with Guthrie in third. Logan Mccullough came through the checkpoint in fifth. With the white flag flying, Witkowski still had the lead, followed by Chilman who had closed the gap to 0:12. Parr was riding hard and giving us a lesson in physical training by seeming to just stroll through the gates in third. McCullough held fourth place, only trailing by 0:22. Senior A leader, Jeff Ford, had moved into the top five claiming fifth place overall. Witkowski was the first rider to take the checkered flag, but soon realized that Chilman had closed the gap enough to take the overall victory with the time adjustment. Parr claimed third place, trailing Witkowski by 3:35. Guthrie moved back up into the top five claiming fourth overall with McCullough riding in fifth place. In the end it was a great race with

50cc rider Wyat Robinson in hot pursuit.

Chilman taking the win. Even more exciting was the fact that Chilman, Parr and McCullough all landed in the top five overall starting from the Heavy B row, four rows back from the AA class. Frias fleet at Spring Creek Millville, Minnesota - September 18 By Rolfe Otterness

T

ravis Frias took on the 65cc 6-11 class at the final round of the Spring Creek series, and with a fine ride took the overall win, wrapping up the series championship to boot. There was a good crowd on hand to try their luck with the Spring Creek track as entries totaled about 400, not too bad for a day with rain in the forecast. The forecast was correct and there were light showers on and off throughout the day which made the track somewhat greasy. For added challenge, the pro uphill was brought into play- minus the uphill double, and it was a good addition although maybe a bit more challenging than some might like with the rain. When the first moto of the 65cc class hit the track, Josh Boaz jumped out front with Frias in pursuit. The little boogers were flying over the back triple. Gavin Janovsky and Dalton Hein settled into third and fourth. Boaz was in charge this time out and stretched his lead to take the win with about seven seconds over Frias. Janovsky was a ways back in third but held a decent advantage over Hein. Boaz led through turn one in the next moto but Frias was ready to rumble, and dashed into the lead before the end of the first lap. Frias seemed to have a bit better technique in the slippery conditions and went on for the win with Boaz about four seconds off his pace. Janovsky once again took third with fourth going to Aaron Boatman. For a report on some slightly older characters, the amazing Bruce Gates shot off the gate to lead early as moto one of +25A was let loose. Gates is somewhere in his 40’s, but still has the speed to run with the 25 year olds and he went on for a nice win. Tim Zebro had a good ride and stayed within about ten seconds of Gates for second. Mark Johnson took third despite the last gasp pass attempt by Brent Mason as they came to the flag. Mr. Gates did not start the second moto (maybe didn’t like the light rain?) so Zebro had the holeshot all to himself as he went on to lead all the way home. Johnson was second early in the race but had trouble and dropped off the pace. Another old boy took over in second as Scott Steinle settled in for the duration. By the end Zebro held a decent lead over Steinle for the win and Steinle held a good gap over Adam Koch. Fourth was the property of Jesse Zimmer with Johnson fifth. In Super Mini, Jerry Robin ran a superior pace to take the win by large margins in both motos. Nolan Heppner had a good first moto and took second but dropped way back to ninth in the second moto. Nick Schnagl was more consistent, and with his 3-2 score

snared second overall. Kyle Lawler’s 4-4 earned him third over the 7-3 of Joseph Gomez. The 250A class was loaded with talent as Jeremy Martin was home to defend his turf against challengers like Jake Loberg, Joe Perron and Cody Lackore, among others. Loberg showed he was ready to play and jumped to the lead as moto one began in a light rain. Martin had a not-quite-so-good jump and at the end of lap one the order was Loberg, Robert Droher, Martin and Lackore. Martin zapped Droher on the camelback jump about halfway through lap two and fixated on Loberg who was really twisting the throttle to the stops and had pulled a bit of a lead. Mar-

Bruce Gates crests the first turn jump in +25A.

tin closed bit-by-bit on Loberg over the next lap but had a spot of trouble going for the lead and lost a few seconds again. In the meantime Droher and Lackore were banging bars over third. On the last lap Martin managed to close again with Loberg and charging through the last turn he ended up a bike length short at the flag. The Droher/ Lackore skirmish finished up about ten seconds back with Joe Perron in fifth. Loberg and Martin ran nearly side-byside going into moto two with Martin grabbing the lead. Martin wanted to reassert himself as the master of Millville, and he jetted off from the pack while Loberg seemed to have some problem, maybe vision related from the rain, and dropped off the pace. Joe Perron was looking better this time and moved into second. Loberg recovered some pep and passed Lackore to get into third for a couple of laps but then Lackore made some moves to get by both Loberg and Perron going into the white flag lap. Martin concluded the

moto with a big lead over Lackore, Perron and Loberg with Mike Bottolfson taking fifth. Messy late-season Pine Ridge Athelstane, Wisconsin - September 24 By Cody Wills

A

fter spending the year doing it old school, sleeping next to my bike in my trailer, I woke up early Sunday morning to realize it was almost October in Northern Wisconsin. BURRRRRR! It can only mean one thing. It’s down to the end of the year of racing. Adding misery to the already cold conditions, the Vet A class seemed to be the unlucky group to see the rain start to fall hard. Getting the holeshot in moto one was Stacy Anderson with Rodney Van Eperen second and Darin Dionne in third. Van Eperen made quickly made his way around Anderson and then checked out for the win. The real battle was between Anderson and Dionne, swapping spots at least five times in the rain during the moto. Dionne ended up getting the second with Cheston Lilley finishing fourth. Tom Dretzka rounded out the top five. By the time moto two came around the track was a muddy mess. Van Eperen got out front early and checked out again, and Dionne stayed somewhat in check in second, until the mud jumped up and bit him as he fell in the corner after the whoops. Cheston Lilley was close behind and able to take advantage of that fall and so was Tom Nielsen. The mud was getting deep and hard to get through, but it didn’t stop Van Eperen from going 1-1 on the day or Cheston Lilley for picking up second in the moto, but Nielsen pulled out giving the third spot back to Dionne which was good enough for him to pick up second overall. Anderson had a fifth in moto two which got him fourth overall. The 50Jr class saw some really close racing between the top two riders of Hayden Anderson and Drake Dionne. (Just like their dads did in Vet A) Moto one had Anderson out front early and Dionne keep a close eye on him all moto. Dylan Young worked his way to third after finding himself outside the top five at the beginning of the moto. Blake Parker and Hannah Densow swapped positions till the end, battling for fourth. It came down to

the last corner and Densow got the fourth spot. Moto two for the Peewees saw Anderson and Dionne check out again from the pack and do battle. Anderson got the holeshot and Blake Parker was right behind, but went down after the first turn. Dionne made his move to the lead and it appeared that Anderson may have went down after losing a lot of time on lap two. Close behind Anderson after his fall was Dylan Young. It didn’t take long for An-

Drake Dionne going to second overall in 50Jr.

derson to shake the pressure and make his way back up to Dionne, and then make a move to the lead for the win. Late in the moto Parker made his way to third after his first turn crash, dropping Young to fourth. Anderson got the overall with Dionne second. The rain dampened day that turned into a muddy mess made for a good time at Pine Ridge. Everyone always needs one of those muddy weekends to add to their year of racing memories, and for some this was the one of those weekends. eighth. Nick Neys had another good ride, finishing second for second overall as Alec Perry improved to finish third ahead of Yenerich. With Midwest VMX having run the day prior, it was cool seeing a few of the classy old bikes stick around for this event, and run in the Vintage class. Con Erskine took the win in both motos, while Chuck Doose and Barry Eisen put their old bikes through the ringers in both motos, trading positions a couple times before Doose finally locked up the

ollowing the great impression left on a lot of riders last year, it was no surprise that many made a return trip to Sunset Ridge’s second ever GP event. As if it was ordered special by Bob and Jan Pistole, mother nature delivered an absolutely perfect early October day... plenty of sun, perfect temps and all. Combine that with a well prepped track, all new routing through the grass section, and just enough woods to keep everyone happy, and it was set to be an awesome day. Like last year, the participants were a good mix of moto, hare scrambles, and enduro guys, even a few first time racers. The two long motos gave everyone the track time they were looking for, and the mix of terrain challenged everyone in some manner... but the theme of fun was prevalent through everything, mixed in with some competitive racing for sure. This isn’t an all day affair... it starts a little later, and wraps up mid afternoon after the six classes had their two motos. Kicking it all off was the twenty-two rider 250cc class. Enduro specialist Ryan Moss took the lead off the start and held on for the first couple laps. When they made the third trip onto the motocross portion of the track, Open Air Powersports Kawasaki rider Vini Provenzano took over. From there, Moss chased hard in second, with Nick Neys just off his rear fender to the end. Back just a bit, Brady Neys came out on top of a race long three-way battle for fourth, finishing ahead of Collin Yenerich and Alec Perry. Provenzano won the second moto as well, “I got off to a good start in both motos. In the first moto I had to work up a bit as I followed someone right off the track as we didn’t know where we were going. This moto I got to the front quick and never looked back. I like this a lot as it brings a bunch of different riding together, and test all your riding abilities. This is my first time ever doing one of these, and I’ll do more of it again for sure.” Moss got a bad start, and had to work up, eventually finishing Con Erskine won the Vintage class on this cool old Can-Am.

second place spot in the late laps. After winning his second moto on the ‘74 CanAm MX1, Erskine, “This is great, I like the GP style and extra time on the track. The track got a little rough from the modern bikes, as some of us are riding bikes with only four inches of suspension. It was a great day, and yesterday was a ton of fun as well. Bob and Jan did another great job as usual.” The 450 class was won by a rider best known for his off-road abilities, but he surely

held his own on the moto portions of the track as well. After about the first ten minutes of the race, Matthew Dissell had taken over the lead from Jason Kloptowsky. Dissell rode smooth, and slowly edged away for the win while Greg Sassi worked his way up, and got around Kloptowsky two laps later for second. Iowa’s Lane Felderman rode a smart race, and managed to hold off a late charge from Travis Ward to finish fourth. Kloptowsky led the second moto as Dissell took a couple laps to work around Felderman for second. From there Dissell put the chase on Kloptowsky, and after another two laps he took over. Felderman held on for third, just edging out Sassi. AA Hare Scrambles rider Dissell, “In the first moto I had to work for it early and made my passes through the grass track. This time it took longer to catch up and get out front. You had to be a little careful in the grass, and the moto track was as fun as always. This is the first GP I have done. The race is just long enough. It is different because it is more like moto where you have to go a little more wide open right off the gate compared to a hare scrambles where you really start to go at like the forty-five minute mark.” In the +30 class, Kloptowsky was back after having just finished the 450 class... yea, back to back races. Layton Jones led early, but once Kloptowsky got out front, the race was all his. Jones, “I got out front first and then Jason got around me and took off. This was my first GP... if I was in shape it would have been even better, but it was cool.” Once Jones settled into second, David Stickel came up and gave him a challenge that lasted right up to the final lap. Stickel after the moto long fight with Jones, “I had a good

time... I’m a woods racer, and these guys are pretty fast on the moto track. I could catch up to them in the woods, but the section wasn’t long enough to keep that edge. The flat grass track sections were a lot of fun, and I had a good race with him (Jones).” DGY/ Fly Racing backed Kloptowsky didn’t seem tired at all after the moto, maybe a win will do that for you. Kloptowsky, “The GP

Nick Neys finished second in the 250cc class.

win. It was a good race.” In the second moto, Tatar wicked it up enough to hold onto the lead all the way to the finish, good for the overall as well. Boyd finished third as Karson Kokotan finished second after ending the first moto in fifth. Jackson Miller rode well, going 3-4 for fourth overall in the talent rich class. Wisconsin’s Terry Hahn managed to get a day off work, and came out and swept the +45 class, taking the win in both motos ahead of David Benson. Scott Lindahl finished third in the first moto, and D17 Motocross director Gerhard Ward went 4-3 for third overall ahead of Orville Cline’s 64 motos.

Jason Kloptowsky rode back to back races, winning +30 and finishing second in 450.

was fun. I’ve been trying a few hare scrambles this season for something different and this brings it all together. As a long time motocross guy, you really don’t see how fast the hare scrambles riders are. They are really good at what they do, and it is tough going out with them in a hare scrambles. This sort of event evens it all out. It is a good way for someone to sort of feel out what a hare scrambles is like. Obviously there’s more woods, and the races are longer. The big thing is you don’t know the course, and regular hare scrambles riders are really good at going out there and pinning it in something they haven’t ridden on yet. Mixing it up really is fun though.” Kloptowsky won the second moto ahead of Jones again, but this time Ryan Moss finished third after a fourth in the first outing. Stickel settled in at fourth, for fourth overall The Mini class had a good battle for the lead. In moto one, Zack Tatar held the lead

early, but late in the race, exiting the grass section Dylan Boyd finally found an opening and shot past for the win. Yamaha mounted Tatar, “I got a good start, and passed Dylan and then led for three laps. I started getting really bad arm pump and just couldn’t hold on. After he passed me, I tried getting him back, but just couldn’t. The grass section is great, a little slick in spots, but a lot of fun.” Winner Boyd after the moto, “I like the woods, as I used to do hare scrambles, so they were pretty easy for me. I tried to stay close, and then I passed him by the grass for the

Hawkeye Downs racing action Cedar Rapids, Iowa - August 20 By Tracy Petrak Photos by Missi Thede

W

ith one of the final weekends of “summer” before school starts back up and football starts taking the weekends from many, another great evening of racing was had. The air was cool and with intermittent five minute rain showers the action got underway. The 125/Women’s class was an impressive and action packed group to watch. Nine bikes sat at the gate watching the light go from yellow to green and blasting out was #7 Kayla Allers taking the holeshot. Yes, the Women’s class took the lead. Not to be undermined, #199 Chase Stevenson of the 125 class took back the lead and as the bikes came around for the third lap Jordan Harnish was now the front runner. Allers ran right behind Harnish as he took the win in the 125 class. Allers sailed across the finish to take the first position in the Women’s class. To watch this young lady ride with the 125 class and hold the second place position in the race was simply awesome. Stevenson and Justin Andregg pulled out second and third in the first moto while in the Women’s class Allers was followed by Darcy Goette. Now fired up, the second moto for this class came off the gate with Stevenson and Harnish with Allers all in sequence. Allers got pushed back to third in the second lap and held that position without a waiver. Stevenson won the overall of the 125 while Harnish took the second, but not without a competitive attitude.

With even deeper rumbling and more dust to fly was the 250A class shooting from the line. In the first corner Devin Reed pushed out in front of Kurt McCabe by a hair while feeling the breath of Bobby Hanson and Mike Weese on their backs. Every lap around the track was the question of whether Reed would hold off McCabe. All the way into the final lap and McCabe just could not find the clean line to get past Reed. In the second moto Reed and McCabe flew into the very first corner. Reed again went after that position and held on for the ride. These two racers were so fun to watch with excitement building in each lap. Although Reed held tight to the first place position, McCabe was not giving up. In the final lap these two were elbow to elbow up to the finish line as Reed took the win. There was a great turnout and good times had, as always at Hawkeye Downs. he King City Dirt Riders hosted a weekend doubleheader hill climb near Mt Vernon, Illinois, with Cody Jenner and the Peters family coming away with top honors. Jenner claimed the Fast Time award at the Saturday night climb, flying his CR500 over the top in 3.973 seconds on his first ride for the win in the 600cc class, as well as the overall fast time of the night. Bobby Senn was the only other rider to break the four second barrier, posting a fine 3.996 second time for second place in the class, with Jared McKay third. Joe McGurer had a good night Saturday, claiming wins in both the 250cc and Open Stock classes. The Peters family had another great weekend. Matt took two class wins and the overall fast time in the rain shortened Sunday

race. His 4.191 second first round ride on his CR250 was good for the win in the 250cc class, with Jon Creek taking second on his Suzuki, with McGurer third. In 450cc class action, Peters sailed his KTM380 over in 4.012 seconds on his first ride, and that time held up for not only the class win, but also the overall Fast Time Award. Bobby Senn was second with Cody Jenner third. Jared McKay was Peters closest challenger for the fast time, with a 600cc class winning time of 4.025 seconds in first round action. McKay didn't get a second ride, however, as heavy rains forced cancelling the rest of the event after the second round 450cc class rides. Joe McGurer and Jake Tackitt claimed second and third in the large and fast 600cc class. Mike Pulver was a double class winner Sunday, taking the Senior (+40) and the Open Stock class wins. In youth class action, Levi Peters had 2 perfect days, winning both the 65cc and 85Jr

classes both days, and also claiming the Youth Fast Time award both days. Andy Fortner finished in second place behind Peters in both classes both days. Another big Day at Azzie Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 11 By Dave Hollub

T

he Senior riders had the track to themselves on Saturday and then Sunday morning Aztalan opened up to the regular district riders. 430 entries showed up and were treated to some track changes including lots of sand added to the track since last month. Once practice was over lines had been worked in and some great racing kicked off. Joseph Vitullo grabbed his first ever 50Sr overall going 1-1 for the day followed by Eugene Wolf (3-2) and Braden Warner (3-4). The 50Jr overall went to Jackson Oehlhof with a 1-1 finish. Blake Longley (3-2) and Owen Haseleu (2-4) finished up the podium. Tylor Skodras began stringing together another day of overalls as he clinched the 125Jr. with a perfect 1/1 day. Justin Wolf chased Skodras hard but had to settle for second in both motos. Riley Telfer (4-3) edged out his brother Bryce Telfer for the third overall position. Skodras ended the day with five moto wins after grabbing overalls in 125Jr, 250B, and Open B. Matthew Menzer pulled the holeshot in the first moto of Unlimited A by edging out Tyler Smulders. Cody Simonton was running third with a hard charging Brad Behrens right on his rear wheel. Behrens slipped into third

on lap three in the sand on the west end leaving Simonton battling with Nicholas Latour for fourth. Smulders got by Menzer as lap four was beginning and held on to the finish. Menzer repeated the holeshot in moto two once again with Smulders drafting off his

rear wheel. This time Brandon Marescalco was sitting in third but Brad Behrens and Dillon Kau were in a hurry and by the time they came over the plateau on lap one both had made a pass on Marescalco. Menzer held off Smulders for the win and took the overall with his 2/1 finishes. Behrens (3-3) claimed the third spot. +50 took their gate drop and Jeff Patel Sr. edged out Tom Dretzka for the holeshot, and then held on to the lead until just before the finish when Dretzka finally made the pass. Tim Riemer ran a solid third to the checkers while Phil Berndt finished. Dretzka wasn’t leaving the door open in moto two as he grabbed the holeshot and despite challenges from Patel never gave up the lead. Wayne Slagle rounded the holeshot in fifth but was on the move picking off a position each of the first two laps moving into and then holding third at the checkers. Riemer finished right behind Slagle and Berndt rounded off the top five for the moto. Dretzka, “The day was great. The track was awesome here at Aztalan, they did a fine job once again getting it all groomed up and watered. The competition has been good; everyone is keeping it safe but fast. I had a great race with Mike DuClos in +40. He went 2-1 and I went 1-2 so he got

I like the changes to Thanks to Sportland 2, HJC helmets, Scott, Thor, MSR, and my kids for being with me all these years.” Kirsten Raemisch was able to pull away both motos in Women’s after grabbing the holeshots to claim the overall. Kaylen Pellmann ran a solid second while Tammy Flemming claimed third with a 4-3 day edging out Dawn Cox. Mitchell Nooyen was first onto the track in 65cc moto one but due to a bobble in the East end ended the lap in third behind Max Earley and Dalton Hein. Hein got by Earley on the in lap two and stayed out front to the checkers. Nooyen battled back into second before the finish and Earley followed him across. DJ Gritzmacher edged Nooyen out in moto two for the holeshot. Nooyen was out front on the first time over the plateau and now Tyler Gamble was running second just ahead of Gritzmacher. Nooyen grabbed the overall with a 2-1 day, Gritzmacher (4-3) was second and Earley third overall. In +25B/C Robert Manke grabbed the moto one holeshot but Eli Siordia quickly slipped by. Chris Flairty was making a return to MX after a four year absence and running Greg Niles won +25B/C. in second by the time he hit the plateau followed close by Greg Niles. Niles moved past Flairty on the next lap then set his sights on Siordia passing him in the barn section. Thomas Wolf made a mid moto charge and by the time the checkers flew he crossed in second, just ahead of Siordia. Manke again was out front as the class hit the track in moto two but Flairty moved around him in the West end. Flairty managed to hold Manke off for the next lap but then began to fade as the four year layoff caught up to him. Kyle Bettilyon was running third while Niles was busy holding fourth from a charging Ben Schweighardt. By the start of lap four Bettilyon was in second and Niles was pushing a wheel in on him in the corners until he found a big enough slot to get by just before the plateau to claim second behind Manke. Niles took his first ever overall with a 1-2 day, Wolf (2-5) was second and Siordia (3-6) claimed third. Niles, “In the first moto I worked my way up and got into first on about the third lap. In the second moto I was about fifth Jacob Oldenburg in Unlimited A. 34

the track especially the little single before the plateau, it makes it more technical. My dad always helps me out so thanks to him.” Dylan Densow was able to run away with 85Jr. as he grabbed both holeshots and

then settled into his own pace to a 1-1 day. Mitchell Nooyen followed suit as he claimed second spot both motos for the second podium spot. Third was more of a contest; in moto one Peter Paddock battled with Nathan Orlowski. Orlowski held on leaving Paddock to settle for fourth. Paddock grabbed the third spot right away in moto two and held it to the finish giving him third overall. Tylor Strauss rounded the holeshot corner in 250C/1 moto one out front edging out Justin Hall and Joey Wendelberger. By the time they hit the plateau Hall was out front with Strauss and then Tyler Vacala trailing. The front three went on to hold their places to the finish. After winning moto one Hall looked determined to grab his first ever overall as he

powered down the start and grabbed a big holeshot. Kenny Ehredt was running second with Strauss and then Vacala following. As lap three was closing Ehredt started pushing his wheel in on Hall and then as they went through scoring Ehredt made the pass stick. Hall was not giving up and briefly moved back out front over the plateau but Ehredt crossed the line just ahead of Hall. Hall still managed the overall with his 1-2 while Ehredt (4-2) edged Strauss (2-3) out for second. Hall, “It is my first overall so I am pretty stoked. I really want to thank Rock River and all my friends that came out. As the day came to a close everyone seemed pleased with the track changes, and left tired from a day of racing. Trollhagen Hare Scrambles Dresser, Wisconsin - September 18 By Mike Pohl

B

ack we go to wet conditions. The Norseman’s second Hare Scrambles event of the season took place on a gray and rainy fall day. Yet, in spite of the dreary weather, the pits were full of rigs and riders. Over 250 riders took the green flag. Just one day before the event itself, the concern was dust, according to Norseman Nate Zambon. By Sunday morning the rain zapped the dust and resulting in a trail surface itself was close to perfect, at least anywhere there was a canopy of trees covering the course. Things got slick on some of the open two-track sections. Riders had to pay full attention, lest they take a high speed detour through the trees. 200A rider Dave Schreiner said, “it was a strange sensation riding on a dry course, yet being totally wet the whole time.” Nate Ferderer led the race wire-to wire. Matt Stavish came through the first lap in second place, followed by Kyle Nelson, young gun Dennis Lau and Peter Graves. By the end of the race, Graves was out, Nelson moved up to second, Stavish grabbed third, Lau took fourth and Craig Holasek pulled up to fifth, after letting Lau past on the last lap. Vet A rider Mike Heuer rode most of his four laps with a flat rear tire. Heuer said, “I rode as hard as I dared and when it felt like the tire was about to come off the rim, I backed off a bit”. As I photographed him numerous times throughout the day, it was not the least bit apparent he was fighting a flat. He rode extremely aggressively. Flat tire or no, Heuer took first place in his class, finishing a whopping seven minutes ahead of sec-

Fall arrives at Riverside Raceway Winterset, Iowa - October 1 By Missi Thede

G

etting toward the end of the 2011 race season, Winterset held its weekend district race bringing anxious riders to perfectly primed track. Saturday kicked off the two-day affair, and temps were in the 30s – yes, the 30s, but with a clear blue sky it could only get better (and warmer) from there. Starting off the first motos was the fourteen rider gate of the 250C class. Brian Neuenkirk got the holeshot with Jesse Gildea and Blake Lura in pursuit. Nick Ryan moved through the pack during the first lap to get to the second spot putting Gildea in third and Stone Schildroth in fourth. Neuenkirk expanded his lead through the third lap, with Ryan still twisting the throttle to gain on him. Schildroth moved into third setting his concentration on Ryan and the gap he would have to close. Unable to do so before the finish, the first moto win went to Neuenkirk with Ryan, Shildroth and Gildea rounding out the top four. With second moto action started, Cody Ely was in the lead, with Michael Lohrer second ahead of Ryan. Fast forward to the last lap where Connor Sturtz made his way past Ryan for the third to set up the final running order. With a totally different group of top finishers this moto, Ely took the moto win. Ryan’s 2-4 grabbed the overall ahead of Lohrer’s 7-2 for second. Next off the gate was the 250B class.

Keaton Sterk took the Quad C overall.

Mason Kerr chasing #116 Chase Juhl in the 14-24B/C class.

Mason Kerr leaped out to a nice gap with the holeshot ahead of the closely packed group of riders behind him. Taylor Simons and Mitch Simon flew over the first jump side-by-side, both wanting a shot at Kerr, but Chase Stevenson and Chase Conis were also looking to advance. Stevenson worked his way into second setting Simons back to third with Conis in fourth. With a more than comfortable lead, Stevenson was still in hot pursuit of Kerr. Further down the pack, Simons and Conis waged a battle on their positioning in the corners along with Simon, Travis Prier and Chase Juhl. Kerr took the win with Stevenson in second as Conis took over

third with Simons right on his tail. Prier made his way ahead of Simon and Juhl in the competitive race. Second moto had Kerr leading the pack again with Stevenson in pursuit and Prier in third leaving Simons and Simon to gain ground. Simon had major pressure from Conis through the woods section and lost the battle as Conis set his sites out on Simons. Kerr finished with the sure win with Stevenson, Prier, Simons, Conis and Juhl placing the second moto wins which also set the overall results. Quad C blasted off the gate with #547 Colton Paustian clearly stating from his holeshot start that he was going for the win. In pursuit of him was Travis Brandt, Keaton Sterk and Ethan Dalton. At the start of the second lap through the whoops Paustian led with Brandt and Dalton side by side. Brandt kept his lead as Sterk closed in the gap on Dalton through the next whoops section. With the third lap Sterk made his way past Dalton and took the third spot as Sterk now closed in on Brandt. Sterk took Brandt’s positioning and achieved the second place for first moto. Second moto had Sterk in the lead with Paustian second, and Dalton third. The top three were locked in for their places over the

finish setting the overall finishes as Sterk, Paustian, Dalton and Brandt. For such a brisk, cool fall morning, the events of the day definitely heated things up and made for an exciting opening race for the weekend at Riverside Raceway. Vintage Iron Invades Iowa Davenport, Iowa - September 2 By Gordon Lunde

T

he Chief Blackhawk chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America presented its 40th annual national meet over the Labor Day weekend at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport, IA. It was a celebration of anything and everything in antique and vintage motorcycling. The show boasts beautiful examples of motorcycles from many years ago; the lost manufacturers of America’s prime motorcycle years. Harleys, Indians, Popes, Excelsiors and brands I never heard of were shined and displayed in grand form. Great viewing for the enthusiasts. As well as the show, there is a huge swap meet that includes everything from the beautiful restored bikes to piles of rusted parts. Only the true vintage enthusiast would have any idea what some of these things belonged to originally. Along with that are all of the paraphernalia that goes with it such as old brochures, magazines, clothing, toys and about anything else you can think of for vintage motorcycles. Some vendors boasted new replacement parts for the old machines. Beautifully hand crafted frames, gas tanks, and wheels and more were displayed to help the vintage builder complete their projects. Over 500 vendors attend this event every year. But what brings me to this event? Racing! This is one of the best shows you’ll see of antique and vintage flat track motorcycles in

Kris Thompson and his Indian board tracker.

A beautiful Indian racer. Checking out all the old bikes is part of what makes this event special.

action. The newest bikes on track are the ‘80’s singles and twins. The oldest are the board trackers out of the teens and twenties. And race they do. This isn’t just a demonstration of bikes riding around the track, the riders are pushing and going for the win in every turn! Great vintage flat track racing by some young and vintage aged riders as well. The board trackers are my favorites. Single cylinder machines built in the early 1900’s, and still running great today. Popping and snarling, clouds of smoke from the total loss oiling systems make them crowd pleasers. The front runners were doing laps times equal to a lot of the newer equipment on the track. If old bikes make your day, make the trip to Davenport next Labor Day weekend. It’s a journey you’ll not soon forget. CYCLE USA, November 2011
