Vets unleashed at Sunset Walnut, Illinois - July 23 By Missi Thede
T
he first round of the RacerX Senior Series was held at Sunset Ridge MX in Walnut on Saturday, July 23rd. Everyone’s eyes were on the sky and their phones (radar) as storms just narrowly skimmed north of the area. The track was well-groomed and after practice they went right into racing by 9:30 a.m. First off the gate was the +50A class with #22 Rick Munson taking the holeshot ahead of Roy Nafzger in pursuit with thirteen others battling for position. Nafzger jumped into the lead after the uphill triple and Randy Baumann took the third spot. By the third lap Munson had slid back to fourth as Baumann and Jeff Patel Sr. moved up. Munson wasn’t accepting that, and made his way back up to second position, setting Baumann back to third with Patel still putting pressure on from fourth. First moto finishes were Nafzger, Munson, Baumann and Patel. Second moto had Nafzger in the lead with Munson, Baumann, and Patel leading the rest of the pack. Patel took third from Baumann over the tabletops in
the back section as they continued to battle. It wasn’t long and Baumann regained third over Patel as Nafzger extended his lead on Munson. Nafzger took first overall for the day placing Munson second, Baumann third and Patel fourth. The eldest class of the day was +60 with seven entrants. Donald Hachmeister led off the start and into the opening lap with Bob Lewis and Charles Koch close over the uphill triple. Koch moved into second leaving Lewis in third, then kicked it up another gear and passed Hachmeister and took the first moto win leaving Hachmeister second and Lewis third. Second moto had Tim Graves in first, Koch second, Hachmeister third and Lewis fourth. Graves maintained a heavy lead this round. Overall finishes had Koch in first, Hachmeister second and Lewis in third. In +35A Chad Leidigh took the holeshot with Joe Buskirk right on his over the uphill triple and

move had to be locked in and precise. Buskirk ran his hardest to make up time on Leidigh, but just couldn’t get the edge he needed. First moto finishes were Leidigh, Buskirk, Demastry, Mericle. Second moto had Buskirk in the early lead over the tabletops, Leidigh second and Demastry and James Rossi in third and fourth. Leidigh finally got his grip on the first place position by mid moto as Demastry took over second and Rossi grabbed third with Peter Ledingham in hot pursuit. Buskirk had to crank the throttle to come back from the seventh spot. Ledingham finally got the pass on Rossi and took third with David Stover applying full pressure on him before the tabletops. With Buskirk able to gain one more position before the finish line second moto finishes were Leidigh, Demastry, Ledingham and Buskirk. The +35B/C class. Robert Sallee took the holeshot with a heated pack of riders right behind him of Dave Doster, Jerry Samuelson and Scot Poland. Doster put the challenge on Sallee right away as they flew through the double roller and went into the camel hump side by side. Samuelson in third pushed the throttle to gain on the two. Jeffrey Evensen moved his way past Poland up to fourth position. Sallee kept an eye on his lead and felt the ongoing pressure from Samuelson who was closing the gap on him. With a consistent run Sallee took the win with Samuelson second, Doster third and Evensen fourth. Second moto had Doster in the lead over the tabletops, Sallee in second and Poland and Samuelson in third and fourth. Samuelson worked his way up to second with Poland in third as Sallee had dropped down to seventh and had precious time to make up. Doster

content with his lead on Samuelson still knew he could be a threat has he found out first moto. With persistence Sallee managed to make it back up to the third ahead of Poland, who had Chris Koch on his tail. Koch took fourth. Second moto finishes and overall were Doster, Samuelson, Sallee and Koch. The biggest class of the day was +55 with twenty entries. Rick Munson gave a repeat holeshot from his earlier start and had Michael Gilleran and Jeff Patel Sr. chasing. Munson kept his lead and Patel moved into second with Gilleran in third with pressure from Paul Chyma Jr. Patel was still closing on Munson but went down exiting a corner. This put Gilleran in second. Chyma made his

way past Gilleran into second as Munson took the win. Second moto had Munson in the lead and Patel in second, picking up where he left off before his get-off first moto. Chyma followed in third ahead of Tom McShane as more rain started to fall which actually helped track conditions. The second lap had Todd White sneak by McShane. Overall went to Munson, Chyma, White and McShane. Since the race ended around mid day, and the sun returned, the track opened up for the rest of the day for a bike practice. Even with the occasional rain, it was an excellent day of racing and everyone had the chance to get their fill of riding in.... what more could you ask for. Skodras heats up Aztalan Lake Mills, Wisconsin August 13 By Dave Hollub
M
y first thought looking at the weather forecasts leading up to the weekend, “Oh no here it comes.” The weathermen were predicting a stormy weekend and sure enough Friday and Saturday brought rain. The crew prepped the track, and when Sunday morning dawned it was wet, but ready to race. Practice churned it up just enough that when the first gates dropped the surface was just right, and all 485 entries were ready to test it out. When 50Jr took their first gate drop Hannah Densow grabbed the holeshot but little Ben Blazek was right on her rear wheel on his PW50. Densow was soon battling with Owen Haseleu who managed to grab the lead, and soon Drew Banholzer also got by Densow. Adam Hebb chased Densow but couldn’t get close enough to challenge for third before the checkers flew. Densow grabbed the holeshot in moto two but once again Haseleu took the lead on the first lap. While Haseleu Tylor Skodras won six motos for cruised out front Densow overalls in 250B, Open B, and Sportsman B/C. held onto second and Hebb When +25B/C took their gate drop it was fought off Banholzer to finish third. Travis Schedler out front of the holeshot with NonCurrent took the first big bike gate Rammer right behind. Rammer got the lead drop and Jeremy Martens powered his when Schedler went down in the west end, Yamaha around the holeshot corner in first. and held him off for the next lap. On the secKevin Rammer was able to grab the lead in ond trip over the plateau Schedler launched the West end. On the first trip over the out into the lead and held on while Rammer plateau CJ Fletcher jumped over both Ramfinished in second. Bubba Bunders was runmer and Martens to take the lead. Ian Malining third until lap three when Bryan nowski was charging hard from a back of the Bournoville slipped past. David Blazek also pack start and by the start of lap two he was got by Bunders on the white flag lap. leading the class. Malinowski’s lead was Brad Yde grabbed the moto two holeshot short-lived when midway through lap two but Schedler quickly moved past and gained a Fletcher re-took the front and held off Malibit of breathing room as he cruised to the nowski until just before the finish. Kyle Kilmoto win. Nick Schmeling got by day worked his way into third on lap three. Bournoville early in lap three for third but Rammer grabbed the moto two holeshot soon had a new challenge from Rammer. but before the plateau was in second behind Rammer found a big enough opening in the Malinowski. Malinowski held on for the west end and passed Schmeling for a third moto win with Rammer in second and place moto finish. Rammer, “I was up here Fletcher third. 6 CYCLE USA, September 2011
from Georgia for a wedding last night so I decided to come out and race. My first moto in +25B went surprisingly well, it was the first time I ever raced the class. We did get a pretty good lead on third which was good because I had just finished the noncurrent class and was able to conserve a bit. Second moto I didn’t get the start I did first moto, I think about seventh or eighth. I worked my way up to third which I knew combined with my first finish would give me second overall so I didn’t have to try getting past second.” Matthew Menzer continued his season long holeshot domination in Unlimited A with Jonathan Hartman hanging close behind. Dale Kathan rounded the holeshot in 4th but by the time he hit the plateau on lap one he was running in second with Hartman and Matthew Hopkins right behind. Hopkins got by Hartman on lap three but couldn’t catch Kathan before the finish. Menzer once again beat out everyone to the first corner in moto two wedged between the front tires of Hopkins and Hartman. Hopkins got the advantage and took over second while Hartman battled with Kathan for third. Kathan made the move up in the west end and the top three held their positions to the finish. Menzer took the overall with a 1/1 while Hopkins 3/2 edged out Kathan’s 2/3 for second overall. When 125Jr. headed down the start for moto one Justin Wolf was out front with Parker Faust second around the holeshot. Wolf began gaining breathing room and cruised to the moto win. Brandon Clifford moved up into second with Eli Walters running third. Brothers Riley and Bryce Telfer were battling for fourth with Bryce winning out at the checkers. Wolf again took the holeshot in moto two and cruised to his second moto win. Walters was running second but had Clifford sticking a wheel in as they hit most corners. Clifford was able to jump past
Walters over the plateau on lap two to set up his second place moto finish. In 250B Trevor Orr grabbed the first holeshot with Travis Schaefer half a bike back. Schaefer moved into the lead but had Tylor Skodras right on him as they flew over the plateau on lap one. Skodras bobbled in the back giving both Kyle Pallin room to slip past. Skodras went to work and picked off Pallin and then a lap later got by Schaefer. Meanwhile Jake Angove was working his way through the class and by the beginning of lap four was running a solid third just ahead of Pallin. Justin Williams took the moto two holeshot with Justin Wolf and then Skodras behind him. Skodras didn’t waste any time this moto and was out front by the time he hit the west end with Williams close behind. Wolf made the pass and despite riding hard couldn’t catch Skodras before the finish. Joey Suges worked his way into third before taking the checkers.
Justin Wolf won the 125Jr class.
Skodras had a great day as he won all six motos he raced today and later told me, “In Open B I got a second place start behind Lucas Cobian. I got around

him on the second or third lap. In the second moto I got the holeshot and stayed out front and won it. My starts were off, I don’t know what I did but at Loretta’s I just couldn’t get a good start and I still can’t. At least in the second 450B I finally got a holeshot so that feels pretty good. I’m leading in Sportsman right now and hopefully I can win the second moto. Lucas is in there and he is pretty fast so hopefully I can win it. My sponsors are Port Yamaha, Ride Sports, One Industries, and Eric Gorr’s Forward Motion, thanks to all of them.” Seth Doeberlein launched his KTM down the start and led all the way to the finish of 65cc moto one. DJ Gritzmacher was charging hard but couldn’t catch Doeberlein while working to hold off Dalton Hein. In moto two Gritzmacher edged out Doeberlein for the holeshot but a crash just after the start straight took down the leaders along with several other riders. Hein was able to get through and took over the lead. Ezra Rugg was running second with Alex Pintor sitting in third. Gritzmacher picked himself up from the crash and began picking off riders on his way to second as the checkers flew. Hein’s 3/1 was good enough for the overall while Gritzmacher was second and Tristian Tuhy turned a 4/4 day into third.
Hein “In the second race my friend’s chain must have popped off and he crashed when he was out front. Then a couple other guys ahead of me crashed and I got out front and was able to win that moto. My first start wasn’t very good I was about seventh but my second one was much better. In 85Jr I was riding a brand new Yamaha and I got fifth and third so I was third overall. The track was good. Thanks to my Mom and Dad and Team VRM.” Tim Boblin led the +50 class out onto the track but Tom Dretzka was out front as they hit the plateau on lap one. On lap two both Boblin and Allen Brhely were ahead of Dretzka as they went past the start. Dretzka rebounded and went over the plateau bar to bar with Boblin. Dretzka finally made his charge and took the lead on lap four in the west end taking the checkers just ahead of Boblin and Brhely. In moto two Boblin repeated the holeshot and as the lap ended Brhely was behind Boblin. On lap two Dretzka slipped past Brhely and began hunting down Boblin. Lap four once again had Dretzka out front with Boblin second and Tim Riemer running third at the finish. Aztalan results on page 9

D17 trials event at Apple River on Sept. 18th has been changed to Lena (same date, just different location). District 23 Enduro rescheduled. The Straight Arrows Enduro Riders have a new date of October 8-9th for their enduro that was originally scheduled for Aug 20/21, but rained out. For more information see the club’s web site www.straightarrows.org From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman The last couple of months have really gone by fast. Who ever said that you are busier than ever after retirement sure knew what they were talking about. I have never gone in so many directions in such a short period. This is not a bad thing at all except for the fact that my dirt riding time is down to an all time low. I was planning on really getting some serious practice time in after the job was done. I was obviously dreaming on that one. On the positive side I have gotten in a lot more road time than I have been able to log in years. We have discovered some of the best riding this country has to offer right here in south eastern Minnesota, of course the alphabet roads in the central Wisconsin area. I had no idea we had so many beautiful areas to take in. We are working very hard on getting a new riding area in Houston, MN. Houston lies in the Bluff Country of south east MN, it is a pretty area and town, and will make a great setting for a riding park. The success of the Gilbert OHV park has played a role in getting the new park off the ground. These smaller communities are much more welcoming to us than the metro areas. It will be nice to have a riding park in both ends of the state. The area is hilly and heavily wooded so it should make for some really nice riding if we can get it all approved and constructed. We will keep you up to date on the progression of this project.

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... AMA congress will be held at the beginning of October. So far we have not been made aware of the proposed changes, they should be coming in the mail any day now. Watch our web site for the posting of any major change proposals that could affect any of our venues. We are continuing to work on our Motocross medics project with the hope of having it all together by mid 2012. This has turned out to be a big project, but I think it will really be a big advantage to us as racers once we are up and running. If there are any EMT, paramedic, nurses or racers out there that feel they would like to help, let me know. Taking basic EMT training now will get you into the advanced moto medic program once we have it up and running. That is really about we have for business at this point. Mark Becker is hard at work on the yearend awards banquet. It will be held at the Treasure Island Casino near Red Wing, Minnesota. It is a great facility with a ton of things for the kids to do. We will be presenting all the awards in the evening after the meal. This is a change from prior years where the Youth awards were presented in the afternoon. Enjoy the remainder of the season as winter is not that far off. See you on the tracks and trails of MN. Mike District 16 Banquet. The annual banquet announcement is on page 33 of this issue. A copy of the form for printing and mailing can also be found on the district’s amadistrict16.com web site. The annual banquet is coming November 12th, and will be held in the Wisconsin Dells.

year-old Parmeter. "It's going to be a hard one to beat. The hill was really tough compared to last year. The jumps were pretty big, and you had to be really smooth on the landing. I was able to keep my front end up through the jumps and landings and be smooth from all the rides. That was the key to the hill, just being smooth." Parmeter won the 250cc class, Four-Stroke class and 750cc class. He also competed in the 450cc class, where he got third. Parmeter's fastest time of the weekend was 9.8840 seconds in the Four-Stroke class. "I've been trying to win a national my whole life," said Parmeter. "Two years ago, I lost by six-hundredth of a second, and last year it was five-hundredths of a second. To finally win it was such a good feeling." he Rock River Riders hosted the 2011 District 17/ Illinois State Championship Hill Climb, with 148 entries competing for the championship titles. ‘Wild’ Wade Schultz came within 28/1,000’s of a second of having a perfect day, as he claimed two class titles and the Fast Time of the Day award, while finishing second in a third class. Schultz proved once again that older age isn’t always slow as he set his fast time in the Senior (+40) class, with a sizzling 3.529 second first round ride on his CR500. That time not only held up for the class win, but was also the fastest overall time of the day. Terry Steffen was second with Mike Bacon third. Schultz’s second win came in the Open class where he rode his big bore Suzuki to top the hill in a very quick 3.577 seconds, the fifth fastest time of the day. Nate Simenec was second on his Harley with Lloyd Haas third on a Kawasaki triple. Schultz lost his quest for the perfect day when Bobby Senn beat him in the 600cc class. Senn flew his Honda over the top on his first ride in 3.537 seconds to set the overall fast time of the day to that point. Schultz delivered a 3.565 second time on his Honda, for second place. Joe McGurer actually tied Schultz with a 3.565 second run of his own, but crashed on the tiebreaker run trying to overtake Schultz’s unbelievable 3.384 second runoff time. That was actually faster than any ride of the day, but being a tiebreaker, did not qualify for the fast time award or any class standing other than second. Other double class champions were Matt Altfillisch and Joe McGurer. Altfillisch got his first win in the 600cc Four Stroke class with a fine 3.733 second first round ride on his CRF450. Matt’s brother, Chad, was his closest challenger on his Honda with a 3.770 second time good for second place. Paul Hackbarth claimed third. Altfillisch also took the title in the 400cc Stk class, but had to come from behind on his Honda with a 110 foot effort, overtaking Marty Steinacher who had carded a 108 foot effort on his first round ride on his Gas Gas. Mike Pulver claimed third with 102 foot ride. Joe McGurer took his first win in the 250cc class with a 4.132 second time on his first ride which held up for the win. Matt Peters was second in 4.291 seconds, with Derek Swanson third. McGurer found himself in second place at intermission in the Open Stock class behind Mike Pulver, who wrestled his CR500 122 feet up the nasty hill on his first ride. McGurer overtook him in the second round 10 CYCLE USA, September 2011
Pristine day at Midway MX Kellogg, Minnesota - August 21 By Dusty Rose
L
ee Theis and his Motokazie crew had the Midway MX motocross track near Kellogg, MN prepped and ready for racing as over 250 anxious entrants were ready to tear up the pristine ground. Midway MX has two tracks, a track for the 50cc riders and the big track for the rest of the competitors. The first moto in the 14-24C class saw Waseca, MN’s Wyatt Krampitz take the holeshot followed by Riley McClelland, Dayton Konecny, and Dalton Wall. Wall worked up to third in the second lap with Konecny falling back to fourth as they held there to the end with Krampitz checking out for the win. In the second moto Krampitz took the holeshot and right away began to break away. McClelland held down the second, but Wall was stuck close early in the moto before falling back just a bit. It was Konecny’s turn as he tried to capture third from Wall. They battled through the whoops, over
“Kong” hill, and Konecny decided to take the next berm low hoping to gain some ground. Wall stayed high and fought off the attempt to hold his spot and finish third. The 85cc 9-12 class had #50 Ben Adamson from Byron, MN riding fast and furious, checking out early. Devin Stang held second place while the battle was over third with Harrison Gulick on his Yamaha and Kole Lem-
cke, from Farmington, MN. Lemcke gave it his all but then went down in the uphill whoops. During the second moto, Adamson got the holeshot followed by Stang, Lemcke, Colton Exner, and Wesley Hill. By the third lap Adamson had a thirty second lead. Gulick passed Hill, and then went after and passed Exner for fourth. Gulick was bringing it but there was no catching Lemcke. Adamson took the win with Stang second and Lemcke third. Schoolboy class had Janesville, MN’s Dylan Wolff take a huge lead along with the checkered flag followed by Aaron Sperling and Joe Jorgensen. In the second moto, Sperling got the holeshot and hung on to the lead through the whoops, but Wolff went low in the next big berm and took over the lead. The second moto ended the same as the first with Wolff taking the big win. Krampitz and Wolff ended the day winning all of

Greenhurst Farms Scramble Mt Pleasant, Iowa - August 14 By Giulia Jackson
D
irt bike and skateboard fans alike were treated to an amazing venue for Round 8 of the IERA Hare Scramble Series in Mt. Pleasant, IA. Spectators filed up to the attic of the farm’s dairy barn to check out the X-Games worthy skatepark, complete with a half pipe, bowl and rollers. Racers also got to spend some time in a barn, as the scramble track weaved through an old wood barn filled with antique cars. The day started with the 50cc race and Logan Jackson claiming the holeshot. A broken chain put Jackson out of the race on the second lap. Hunter Schultz took the lead and a commanding victory. Jake Lundgren grabbed the holeshot in the 85cc class before coming together with Camrun Nelson in the first corner, relinquishing the lead to Nelson who went on take the win. Lundgren battled with Ryan McElderry for second, but McElderry put his Yamaha ahead at the checkers, with Lundgren taking third. Spectators perched atop hay bales to watch the big bike start, with Mark Burghardt taking the coveted first row holeshot. At the end of the first ten mile lap, Wyatt Setterburg came into scoring first followed closely by Stan Gregory. The two kept their Yam’s out front for the rest of the race, claiming first and second respectively. Behind them a battled ensued for third when Eric Coulter caught Brandon Farnum on the last lap and made a pass. Dusty conditions left Farnum watching Coulter’s rear wheel to see when logs and other obstacles were coming. Coulter stalled his bike in a rocky section, allowing Farnum to get by and eventually take the third overall
spot, with Coulter settling for fourth. Racer’s raved about the excellent variety the track offered. Overall winner Setterburg said of the track, “it was dusty, wet, rocky, technical, fast, rutted… overall a gnarly course.” The course proved to be a different kind of challenge for many members of the B class. Adam Jackson put his KTM out front to take the B class holeshot, but a missed turn on the first lap sent the lead pack down the wrong trail, causing those who didn’t get turned around to be docked a lap at scoring. Cutter Nelson’s day began with a bike that wouldn’t start, putting him on his dad’s ‘06 Honda 450X for this race. Nelson struggled off the start putting him in last going into the woods, but would push dad’s bike to claim the Overall B win, followed by Aaron Fahrer who took first place B.

he Mid-America XC series had successfully landed a co-sanction with the GNCC back in May, but due to inclement weather the bike race was cancelled. Stoney Lonesome MC provided an opportunity for MAXC to co-sanction for the makeup event covering the rained out Indy 100 race. With a larger than normal crowd expected at the fifth round of the Series, the club members cleared a large wooded section to allow overflow parking. This not only provided adequate space for campers and trailers, but provided premium shade for many racers. The PeeWee course was moved to a new section of woods due to the increased parking area encompassing their traditional course. The new area provided the racers with new terrain and tight sections which they do not typically experience. The Pre-Mix class had several lead changes between Louden Feltner and Ethan Sowder. Feltner eventually held off Sowder to take the win. In the Injector class, Brody Smith took the early lead, but was being chased down by Emma Schoolcraft who was 0:25 behind at the first lap. Schoolcraft overtook Smith on the seventh lap and continued to pull away eventually landing her first win at Stoney Lonesome. Given the anticipated magnitude of this event, club member Andy Cregg laid out a superb 3.4 mile track for the kids. The Super Mini class was loaded with talented riders including Austin Lee and Mike Witkowski, who have battled in several recent races. Witkowski took the holeshot with Lee coming through about fourth. It didn’t take long for the two to get hooked up and leave the rest of the field. Vincent Smith checked in at third place with Johnny Schoolcraft close behind in fourth. It was an exciting race with Witkowski and Lee only separated by a few seconds. In the end, Witkowski held
on for the win. Schoolcraft took over third from Smith mid way through the race and held on for the final podium spot. In the 85cc race, Eric Douglass had plans of maintaining his undefeated season at Stoney. Tate Guerrettaz had plans of landing his first victory over Douglass. The two of them put on a good show with close racing throughout the hour event. Guerrettaz rode a flawless race and landed the coveted victory. Kalub Hagan charge out in the 65cc class and never looked back. Langdon Feltner made every attempt to mount a challenge, but Hagan proved too fast. The big bike field lined up on the starting line with 132 riders hoping for a good showing. The riders meeting helped clarify a new feature that the riders would experience on their second lap. The course was being routed down the very steep powerline hill, but just inside the woods which had not previously been raced. Several riders had pre-walked the section and were prepared, but for those that decided not to view it, it was sure

to be a surprise when they arrived. The AA class was stacked with very talented riders all looking for bragging rights. Christopher Bach wasted no time setting the pace on the shortened first lap - turning a 14:11 lap time. Hot on his heels were the entire AA class coming through the checkpoint tire to tire. Adam Bonneur, Derek Allen and Jeff Cregg were the remaining AA riders in the top five overall with Open A rider Zach Love rounding out the top five based on adjusted time. Bach was still in the lead at the end of lap two riding well, doing his best to ensure the lead didn't change for the remainder of the event. Cregg had picked off the two AA riders that were ahead of him, and was now knocking on Bach’s door. Bonneur came through in third trailing Cregg by only by 0:07. Steven

Squire was having an incredible ride, running a strong fourth. Derrick Allen claimed the number five position. By the end of the fourth lap, the traffic on the course had spread out and racers were settling in for the last two laps. Bach was still in the lead at the end of lap four with Cregg continuing to apply pressure. Coming through the checkpoint in third, Bonneur was saying "Hold the Phone" I'm still in the game. There was only 0:30 separation between the number three spot and second place. Allen had moved up to fourth place and newcomer to the top 5, Nathan Sullivan was wanting a piece of the action. During the fifth lap, Bach and Cregg had stepped up their game knowing the white flag would soon be coming out. Unfortunately for Bach, a fuel line issue sidelined him mid-way through the fifth lap allowing Cregg to take over the race lead. Cregg increased the lead at the end of lap six and took the checkered flag at one of the largest events Stoney Lonesome has hosted in several years. Bonneur took the number two spot to the bank - trailing Cregg by 3:06. Rolling through the gates and rounding out the top five positions were Sullivan, Allen and Squire.

Hot Weekend at Trojan North Webster, Indiana - July 16-17 By Becky Stichter
I
nstead of rain this weekend, racers had to battle hot weather. Riding for up to 45 minutes, the hotter temperatures really challenged those who raced the Grand Prix on Saturday morning. Most of the riders were really hot and tired after 30 minutes of racing. Connie Fiest was a double winner, winning the +30A and +25 classes. Rob Watkins rode hard and finished first in the +40 class, and Jeff Macy finished first in 250C. After the Grand Prix was finished, a new set of riders came in for the motocross race Saturday evening. The temperatures didn't drop much, so it was still pretty hot for the evening series. In the 250B class Cady Pressler took charge of things. She came out of the gates leading the pack in both motos, and pulled ahead of the other riders. Pressler finished 1-1, followed by Drew Tippmann and Nick Conklin. The 250C riders had a good battle. In the first moto, Clayton Birk got ahead of the others and
took the win, followed by Damon Meek. In moto two, Jacob Shaw stepped it up, and took the win, followed by Birk.
Drew Tippmann topped Sunday’s 250B and Open B classes.
Zach Conrad won 250C on Sunday.
Isaiah Shelton of the 85 (12-15) class finished 1-1. In the first moto Garrett Miller and Vincent Connett battled for second place, and Connett was able to hold on to the position at the end. In the second moto Miller and Connett battled again, with Miller outriding Connett this time, for second overall as well. With a lower number of riders today, the series finished fairly early Saturday evening. Sunday morning brought more hot temps. The 250C riders had the largest group of the day. In the first moto, Zach Conrad outrode the others to take the win. After some position changes behind him, Cole Davis was the second place finisher. Davis then crashed on the finish line jump, taking himself out of the action for the second moto as well. In moto two, Conrad again finished first, followed by Clayton Birk and Eric Black. Drew Tippmann finished 1-1 in the 250B and Open B classes. It was hot and dry, but still a lot of fun, and nice not to worry about rain or the mud that comes with it. KMSR Climb beats the weather Kewaskum, WI - June 19 By Joanne Lange Photos by Matt Milanowski
T
his year’s 28th Annual Kettle Moraine Sport Riders Hill Climb greeted many riders on Father’s Day to challenge the 300 foot hill. The forecast was looking quite gloomy, with rain and clouds throughout the morning. The positive riders waited the rain out as the sun arrived around noon and the hill was ready for action. Congratulations to Kirk Mueller from LaValle, WI, for setting the new hill record with an amazing time of 7.62 seconds. He had the quickest times in three classes, the Open Pro, 250 Pro, and also the 600 Pro. The King of the Hill champion was Logan Cipala with a time of 7.97 seconds, followed by his father Todd Cipala with a time of 8.33 seconds. Josh Mueller, from Kewaskum, came in third at 8.45. In the 400 Amateur class, Mark Martinich, a dirt track rider, gave it his best shot and found out how tough the jumps were at the base of the hill. He did not make the first jump in round one, but in his second attempt, he improved his distance
18
CYCLE USA, September 2011
by 60 feet. He had the crowd amused and was by far the entertainer of the day. Andy Heineke of Hartford had the overall fastest time over the hill with 10.98 seconds, followed by Jack Paquette with 12.07. Second thru fifth place were all close with only .70 seconds of a spread. Glen Thomson and Travis Christianson tied for fifth place. Only one Antique rider, Brian Martens, of Fond Du Lac, made it over the hill with a time of 13.75 seconds. Danny Vrana had the overall best distance with 200 feet, followed by Chuck Lundborg with 165 feet, Billy Vrana with 158, and Brett Lobajeski with 113. The first round in the Open Stock division, the one and only Triumph rider, Mike “Turk” Dricken of Barton made it over the steep hill with a time of 15.79 seconds. Dricken placed fifth in the second round with his best time of 13.06. Making it look easy the second time around, Garrett Graf showed how to conquer the hill with a time of 11.38 seconds, with Mike Wiedmeyer of 11.56 seconds, Norman Larose 11.68, and David Donahue 11.87.
Many big bikes in the Pro classes were struggling, and only finding the harsh 180 foot mark. Finding a smooth line was the lone key to success to get over this challenging hill. The Justin Bobholz Memorial trophy was again a huge part of the day, and was always presented by his father Dan Bobholz of Allenton. Justin passed away this past spring from a tragic accident, so the family continued this tradition for the kids, ages 16 and under, for the fastest and farthest distance over the hill. The kids taking part in this incredible event were brothers Logan and Luke Cipala, Nathan Lobajeski, brothers Parker and Brady Lange, Jacob Jesko, Sam Wolf, and Devin Massie. Great job kids! Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to all the riders and spectators for your patience with the unpredictable weather. Hot Times at Lena Trials Lena, Illinois - August 6 & 7 By Kathy Haselton Photos by Nancy Littlefield
T
he excitement over a weekend of trials competition was as high as the heat and humidity in Lena, IL on the weekend of August 6 & 7. The Lingbeck family welcomed trials riders to their beautiful property set in the rolling hills between Freeport and Galena, Illinois. Gary Lingbeck’s land offered riders a little bit of everything as they rode through the expansive loop. Each day of riding offered 11 challenging sections. Sunday’s sections varied greatly from Saturday. Saturday’s trials had 30 riders ready to ride on an extremely hot summer day in northeastern Illinois. The loop that took riders though the sprawling land that was almost as challenging to ride as the sections themselves. Riders were challenged at each section with a wide variety of obstacles, including logs, rocks, hills, and water. When the day was done, riders were exhausted, but offered nothing but praise for those who worked so hard to set up the challenging day. Sunday’s trials saw a mix of riders. Some returned for a second day, while many new riders came to ride for the first time on Sunday. The heat and humidity may not have changed from Saturday’s trials, but the 11 sections were changed and new challenges awaited the riders for the second day of competition. As the weekend of riding ended, many riders felt that the Lena venue was one of the best places to host a trials event. Many were
already making plans to return to the Lena area again next year. While it was a great weekend of riding, several riders were able to pull off a double victory, winning first place on both Saturday and Sunday. Patti Meo, Elliot Key, Tito Nappi, and Luke Littlefield were winners on both days of the weekend event. For more information on trials riding, please visit the NITRO web site at www.nitrotrials.com. Heat on at Hawkeye Downs Cedar Rapids, Iowa - July 30 By Tracy Petrak Photos by Missi Thede
T
he turnout for this night of heated racing was awesome. With summer at the halfway point many people have other things going on, and yet still come to Hawkeye Downs for that chance to mix it up and race with all their fellow riders. One certain group of “seasoned” riders got off the gate with energy to spare. The +40B/C integrated right into the 40A’s with one gate drop. In the first lap Matt Morris headed the B/C group and insured he would keep that lead. Morris took the checkered flag first with Steve Barnes, Gary Schultz and Cole Seip in contention with each other for the remaining spots. Watching moto two was like watching the video “replay” of the first race. Morris shot off the gate taking his first place posi-

tion with Barnes and Schultz trailing him close. Morris again took the win and overall victory. Going opposite of the spectrum, to that upcoming group of riders - in the 50Jr class. Four-

teen riders were lined up, heads down, motors revving and the gate dropped. When the small cloud of dust cleared everyone saw that #45 Zane Brownsberger had taken charge of the group
and decided it was his night to shine. He stayed in the lead all the way through each lap, followed by Clay Fishback, Landon Pelzer and Cael Bagby. In the second moto the gate dropped and Brownsberger took the holeshot again, but then went down in the very first turn. Not to lose that position, he was up and fought hard to take back what he deserved. He crossed that finish line with the first place spot again taking the win. This moto Bagby was the threat to Brownsberger and came across in second followed by Maddox Pegump and Kaiden Knaack. Overall was, Brownsberger, Bagby, Pelzer, Pegump and Knaack finishing in the first five positions. The crowd’s involvement of cheering and clapping for each and every one on these racers is just priceless. This is a group of riders who some are still feeling their way around the track, and everyone wants to make this as positive of an event as possible. Next we turned our attention to the Quad 90 Open class. When leaving the gate and all around the track they were leaving dust storms in every corner. Being in the lead early in this quad class is imperative and that’s just what Zach Lindley accomplished. He headed out of the gate in the front and left CYCLE USA, September 2011

everyone “in the dust” so to speak. In the first moto Dalton Thomas was the lucky one to eat Lindley's dust with Tristan Liebe right behind him. Lindley took the first place spot with Thomas then Liebe rounding out the first moto. In the second moto Lindley shot out again and decided to use two wheels instead of four and almost lost it. He gained control and went on to take the victory. This time Liebe took the second spot over the finish line with Gage Beebe third. Overall for the night were Lindley, Liebe and Beebe with great racing among all quads. It was a great turnout of riders and spectators even in the heat. Special thanks to all for your patronage and enthusiasm you give to all the participants out there! DeGross takes two at Kato Mankato, Minnesota - July 23 By Mike Nelson
Z
ach DeGross of Ellsworth, Wisconsin has been hill climbing since he was just a youngster. In the last few years, DeGross has moved out of the smaller bike classes to jump onto some much bigger machines, and really enjoyed the extra power that comes with them. Also in that time frame he has started to show up near the top of the standings on a regular basis. This weekend at the Kato Cycle Club’s annual night hill climb, DeGross made everyone take notice by wining the 450cc and 600cc classes. Both classes have been dominated recently by multiple championship winners Aaron Prebe, Jared Gitter, and Marcus Winch, but on this hot and humid Saturday night with the hill at the KCC grounds reconfigured back to a straight shot with two breakers, DeGross edged out the big names in close competition that had the top spots separated by just hundredths of a second. He also backed up those wins with a nice second place finish in the 4-Stroke class, less than two hundredths of a second behind Prebe. There was quite a list of riders making the trip over from Wisconsin that performed well at this climb. In the 4-Stroke ATV class, Will Shaw led the pack. The O’Neil brothers, Taylor and Bodee, each took top honors in one of their classes, with Bodee winning the Micro Mini class, and Taylor taking the 125cc class. Young Casey Paider topped the 65cc

class, and the Cipala boys, Luke and Logan each got a win as well taking the Mini Jr. and 250cc classes respectively. Casey Wood put up the best time in the Women’s class, and in the Senior(40+) class it was all about the dads.
Open class winner Jared Gitter posted the fastest time of the day.
26
CYCLE USA, September 2011
Casey Wood’s dad, Mike, won the class followed closely by the O’Neil boys’ dad Corey, and DeGross’s dad Darren taking third. For those keeping count, that put the Wisconsin gang in the top spot in ten of the seventeen classes to compete in this climb. Home town rider Corey Danberry topped the 750cc class, but the fastest time of the day went to Jared Gitter on his Open class ride putting up a smokin’ fast run in the four second range. Gitter was one of only three riders to drop below the five second mark along with Curt Sullivan, taking a close second in the Open class, and Mike Wood’s winning run in the Sr class. Now living in Winona, Gitter is still considered a local rider with his family still living near by in New Ulm. The Super Seniors (50+) were the final class to run and as they were coming to the line for their first runs, the clouds started to roll in over the valley. Mid-way through the class some light sprinkles started falling and as old school guy, Walter Krech was taking his Indian up the hill, those sprinkles turned into a moderate shower. After a short pause to see what the weather was going to do the final two riders, Doug ‘Nine Toes’ Marble, local retired stunt rider, and Tim Cain decided to go for it and with minimal time in the hole these guys hustled up the hill to finish out the class. Intermission was called and the smart phones came out of the woodwork with
everyone wanting to see a radar picture for the area. Hopes were high for getting things running again with the radar indicating a small shower that looked like it should pass quickly, but as the weather often does in the Midwest, the small shower blossomed into a heavy downpour, sending rivers of rain water running down the hill making it impossible to run the second round of competition. With ‘Toes’ and Cain having braved the rain and deteriorating hill, the first round was completed so the event could be counted as official and points could be awarded toward the District championships and those coveted jackets given out at the year-end banquet. Jenner, Denson fast at Cayuga Cayuga, Indiana - July 23/ 24 By Bud Northrup
C
ody Jenner and his brother in law, Josh Denson, were the fast riders at the Pleasure Riders hill climb doubleheader in July. Jenner claimed his Fast Time on Saturday night in the 600cc class, coming from behind in the second round to overtake Kyle Galloway, who had taken the first round lead with a 4.164 second run on his KX500. Several riders beat that time in the second round, with Jenner sailing his Honda over the top of the 155 foot hill in 3.936 seconds for the class win, and Fast Time award. He was the only rider all weekend to deliver a sub 4 second time. Andy Fortner took second in 4.0 seconds with Bobby Senn third with a 4.008 second time. Jenner was a double class winner Saturday night, also claiming the 600cc 4-Stroke class win with a 4.102 second time on his CRF450, followed by Troy Camerer and Bobby Senn. Josh Denson topped the hill in 4.165 seconds in the 600cc class on Sunday to take that class win and the Fast Time, with Jenner in second and Galloway third. The Sunday event was shortened to only one round due to rain. The Peters family had another great night Saturday with both Matt and son Levi taking two class wins. Matt took his first win in the 250cc class, where his first round ride was good enough for the win, but he set an even
faster 4.137 second time in the second round. Lucas Learnard was second in 4.282 seconds, with Joe McGurer third. Peters also took the first round lead in the 450cc class on his KTM380, but both Ian Dukes and Dan Groth flew their KTMs over the top in 4.120 seconds in the second half. Peters was up to the challenge, posting a fine 4.058 second run for the class win. Dukes won the second place tie breaker run, leaving Groth in third. In Youth class action, Levi Peters took the first round lead in the 65cc class with a 5.723 second time, but Cline Garriott moved into the lead with a 5.394 time in the second round. Levi responded with an ever quicker 5.351 time on his KX65 to take the win, with Jonathan Brian third. Levi also had to come from behind in the 85Jr class, as he was well down in sixth place at intermission, with Dakota Watson in the lead on his YZ85. Peters nailed an excellent 4.764 second time in the second round to take the win, and also the Youth Fast Time trophy. Watson held on to second and Reece Hutton was third. Levi repeated his 85Jr performance on Sunday, taking both the class win and the Youth Fast Time. Clint Garriott was second with Andrew Fortner third. Kyle Galloway enjoyed a double win day on Sunday, his first in the 200cc class where he rode his vintage KDX200 over the top in 4.941 seconds. Robert Quilter was second with Austin Shutt third. His second win came
in the 400 Stock class on his KX250 with a 4.554 second time. Mike Pulver was second and Andy Fortner third. Corman and Rossetto at South Fork Taylorville Illinois - July 31 By James Pinckard
I
t was time for act two, or I mean round 2 of the Southfork’s midwest amateur series, or the “be the man” series the locals are calling it. So lights, cameras, action. This round was also being filmed for an Illinois travel show! It’s great to see any coverage for our sport and South Fork Dirt Riders is doing a great job. If there was any doubt what time of year it is the temperatures in the 90’s were as hot as the racing on this summer day. If this was a movie, the rider who would have been top bill for this show would have been Suzuki-rider Kyle Corman. Corman who hasn’t been racing full time this year looked like he has never missed a beat. “I’ve been working on our farm and not racing very much this year” said Corman. He was for sure the “Star” of this show today. In the Four Stroke class Corman started out front and continued hitting all his lines for the moto win. New A rider Blake Copeland put in a great ride for second ahead of Honda rider Corey White. In the second moto Corman again was out front taking the win. Copeland had his Kawasaki on the gas after Corman and finished second for the moto and overall. Kawasaki rider Cory Deadmond battled with White for the top three and took third for the moto and overall. The next class Corman was after was the fastest class of the event, Open A. With money on the line, the riders always seem to push extra hard! In the first moto Corman took off with Pro-Am Kawasaki rider Luca Nastrini in tow. Corman and Nastrini crossed the line in first and second with Yamaha rider Mikel White third. In the second moto Corman again took the win. Nastrini finished second with Suzuki rider Alex Wentzel third for the moto. Kawasaki rider Blake Copeland was the luckiest rider on the track. I don’t know if he would agree because he had some problems and finished fifth in the first moto and fourth in the second. But luck was on his side as it was good enough for third overall. Both riders who finished third for the motos Mikel White and Wentzel had a DNF in the other motos. Not to be out done, the Open B class was also chasing a Suzuki with the name Corman on it. Little brother Zach Corman won both motos and the overall. Honda rider Jake Searbrough finished second both motos with Aaron Davis third for the motos and overall. Honda rider Alex Rossetto told me, “I feel good today, in fact I think I should have road the A classes.” After his moto sweep and overall win in +30A, Rossetto set his sights on the +40 class. In the first moto Rossetto was on the gas showing the pack the fast way 28

around the track taking the moto win. Kawasaki rider Brad Adams finished second with Joe Patton third. In the second moto Rossetto again had his Honda cranking for the moto win, giving him a sweep of all the motos he was in. Adams again finished second for the moto and overall. Patton was putting on a charge and finished third for the moto. One class that is getting bigger is +50. When you think of +50 riders you would think they would be careful, not to be aggressive, and ride slower because they are older right? Well if that is true they forgot to tell the riders! In the first moto, Billy Bowman, who hasn’t been at the track for a while was back. Bowman has been a fast rider for years and I’m glad to see nothing has changed with him taking the first moto win. Crystal Falls ProAm Weekend Crystal Falls, MI - Aug. 13/ 14 By Pete Emme
T
he Northern Route MX Series went off at Valley Raceway in Crystal Falls featuring two full days of racing involving District 16 and the always exciting Pro Am race on Sunday. Riders from Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and Georgia were present to gain some status in the Pro Am ranks and also seeking a portion of the $3,000 purse. Watering crews were feverishly dousing the track with H2O throughout the entire weekend. The Uren family had stated that nearly 300,000 gallons of water was laid from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. 197 entries were present on Saturday while 243 showed up on Sunday to put the total almost 450 on the weekend. A good turnout indeed considering the economy and the dog days of August. Campers were also treated to a one man band out of Cecil, WI. +50 rider, John Schneider kept fans listening and dancing to his music aboard a trick piano set that involved drums, guitars, brass and other instruments. quiet hours at 11:00pm each night. He was very good and families even passed the hat around to honor his efforts. The racing on Saturday began in the 50Jr class, the youngest of racers taking it out on the Pee Wee track. Ethan Brissette got the holeshot aboard his KTM but ran into some trouble on one of the hills and got caught in the silt handing the lead over to Lena’s finest, Drake Dionne. Dionne never looked back while Brissette finished second. The second moto had Brissette back up front. Dionne stayed on him the entire moto. Brissette went 2-1 for the overall. Connor Sayles rounded out the top three (3-3). Wyatt Liebeck marched out to the lead in the first moto of 50Sr. Rocco Gravedoni took over the lead on lap one as Liebeck made some early mistakes. Liebeck captured the lead back and then Gravedoni got a little loose and went down after the plateau. Colton Crevier moved into the mix and set his sights on the leader but he too, went down. Gravedoni made his way back into the second. The second moto had Liebeck out front to stay as he went back to back for the overall. Grave-
doni kept it close tallying 2-2 for the runner up spot and Crevier (4-3), Dawson Lincoln (3-4) and Preston Maki (5-5) rounded out the top five respectively. In 250A action, John Vandezande launched his KTM two stroke off the concrete pad and into the first corner leading the pack. Yamaha youngster Adam Reek quickly moved into the lead on the first lap as Hunter Nystrom followed behind. Reek ended up taking the moto win with a good race from Nathen LaPorte to finish second. “John Vandezande got a good start off the line and he just made a little mistake in the whoops and I made a move in the corner to get into the lead,” said Reek. The second moto had Reek out front with Nystrom and LaPorte in tow. Reek kept the streak alive as he ran away mistake free to capture back to back wins. LaPorte was right there behind Nystrom until he made a move in the runner up position on the final lap which allowed him to get second overall with a 2-2. Kyle Koosmann had it pinned to the first corner as he got the first moto holeshot in 250B over Jason Kidd. Moving into the third

spot was Talon Bronk on a Donohue Yamaha. Koosmann, who is a sand specialist, was gone out front. There’s no catching this kid from Mellen, Wisconsin once he gets the lead in the sand. Koosmann took the win with Knox in tow and Bronk third. “I have a sand tire on so I pulled onto the concrete and looked for a sandy spot out front and I didn’t spin off the gate and I pulled the holeshot,” said Koosmann. “I rode my own race and kept it up and out of trouble to take the win.” The second moto had Bronk taking the holeshot and leading the pack down into the sand wash. Bronk held the lead until Koosmann made the pass in the third lap. Bronk was hounded by David Watzka and James Marietta, but he dug deep to hold on to the end. “I started getting tired and then Koosmann was all over me and then I wasn’t paying attention and almost gave that spot up too but I put my head down and stayed in second, good enough for second overall on the day,” said Bronk. seventh spot and stayed there. Martin took the big first moto win with Maier second. Aaron Remter worked his way into third while Nystrom settled into fourth, just ahead of LaPorte. The second moto once again had Martin out front with Reek in second. Maier made a great move on Reek for second. They battled for about a lap on the rough track until Maier came out on top with some breathing room. Martin settled into the top spot, way ahead of the field, while Maier and Reek held the top three spots. These riders gapped the rest of the pack as they started to come across lapped riders. LaPorte started a charge on his own, riding with some fierce aggression moving from tenth to fourth in just four laps, picking off four riders in just one lap towards the end of the fifteen minute plus one lap moto. That was enough to give him a 5-4 tally for third overall. Reek finished with a 7-3 for fifth overall, Nystrom 4-5 for fourth and Maier with a solid 2-2 for second behind Martin. It was a very successful weekend of racing at Valley Raceway hosting two full days of motocross action with nearly 450 entries. A $3,000 A class purse will generally draw some good racing as will fifteen minute plus motos for the Pro Am. A great year for one gem of track in the lower part of picturesque Upper Michigan. Akeley East Enduro Akeley, Minnesota - August 14 By Mike Pohl

inally, dry trails. If you missed Akeley East this year, you missed the best Akeley East Enduro there ever was. Those dry trails helped, but that’s not the whole story. Trail boss Max Bradley and company have made this event better and better each year. A huge amount of effort was put into course prep by the Paul Bunyan Forest Riders. They created a beautiful 50 mile course that meandered up and down the portion of Paul Bunyan State Forest that lies east of Highway 64. They weed-whipped and mowed both sides of the entire trail and they faced much more undergrowth than is typical. The higher rainfall we’ve seen this summer has caused a virtual explosion of growth in the forests. They did a stellar job cutting face-slappers and uncovering the Brett Hardy finished third in Senior A. stumps and rocks that silently lie in wait has allowed them to develop a natural flow for our unsuspecting toes. through the woods, making them seem less The trails here offer a challenging “artificial”. These “man-made kinks” mixture of the stuff most enduro riders have turned out to be an effective method love: good, tough single track with an ocof taking trails that were too straight... and casional jaunt on two track so we can let too wide... and making them feel more like ‘er rip. The pacing of this year’s course narrow, technical single track. Clever. was just about perfect. “Tight, tight, tight, AA rider Nate Ferderer took the overopen, wee haw, tight, tight”. Lake, Mora and now Akeley East have all been dominated by this talented and aggressive rider. It’s easy to tell when he’s coming down the trail; his YZ-250F Yamaha is absolutely pinned. There is nary a let up in the thundering boom of his exhaust as he approaches rapidly through the woods. So rapid, in fact, that I often fail to catch him with my camera lens. Or most of him, anyway; several times all I’ve managed to capture is the back half of his bike. Fortunately the ambulance crew was kept in a state of boredom this year. No serious injuries were reported. Perhaps this was largely due to all the hard work put in by the dedicated PBFR members building such an agreeable race course. And did I mention that the trails were dry? That might have helped too. Lake County Fair Stadium MX Grayslake, Illinois - July 26/ 27 By Dave Deringer
Once again, the annual Nielsen Enterprises Lake County Fair Stadium Motocross, just north of Chicago, was a success. With the assistance of the increased Pro purse to $7500, the event had 98 riders sign up to race on Tuesday night. Some big name Arenacross stars were in attendance and the racing was excellent on the Schaefer Tracks built and promoted, stadium-style course. Tuf Racing/ Venning Honda's Jeff Gibson was the big winner as he took all four of the 250 and 450 Pro main event wins over the two night event. Gibson took a wire to wire win in the 250 Pro class Tuesday and then later ran down D&S Fox sponsored Josh Demuth to take the 450 win with a last lap pass. Rock River Yamaha's Drew Yenerich was the big surprise Tuesday as he finished on the podium in both mains, with a second on the 250 and a third on the 450. Arenacross veteran and local boy Tommy Hofmaster finished third in the 250 Pro class on his Rock River Yamaha and crashed out of the 450 main on the opening lap. Sportland 2’s rider for a few days, Daniel Blair, who flew out from Northern California and borrowed a few Kawasaki’s, finished fourth in both finals. Cory Catalani was the amateur to stop on Tuesday as he won both main events in style. Demuth just beat out Gibson for the +25 win and Willy Browning took an easy win in the Pitbike final. Wednesday attendance was down a little

as an early morning downpour scared a few riders away. Demuth had already headed home as he broke a bone in his foot during the 450 final. Gibson once again took both Pro main event wins, but this time he was challenged by his good friend and travel partner Willy Browning. Browning had a great night Wednesday as he took second to Gibson in both mains and also won the Pitbike main
again as well as the Dash for Cash. The two Ohio natives took home a big chunk of the purse and were glad they made the trip. “I’ve raced here a few times and it’s always a great event with a massive crowd, big purse, great track and heavy competition,” Gibson said of his journey. Browning commented, “I was on the fence about coming here all week before the event, because last time I was here I got

Fun day of Short Track at Azzie Lake Mills, Wisconsin - July 16
I
t was a hot, humid, and sticky afternoon but overall a good family day at the Azzie track. With no rain in the forecast came a dry and fast track, and we had a huge rider turnout in most classes as well.... perfect for an action filled day. There were seven 50cc shaft riders. Colton Witucki, from Jefferson jetted off into an early lead with Ethan Jahnke hot on his tail. After a few laps in, Jahnke settled for second place overall. Many of these spirited riders were swapping positions several times to see who would end up in third. It was with girl power, Ava Stobb, clinching third as Dawson Garcia and Ashton Demaa rounded out the top five. The Quad B class had a huge turnout of riders. Dave Bower of West Bend and Kyle Jirousek from Mauston battled most of the race. Bower was fighting to keep his first place position while Jirousek took the outside to pass Sherman Lackey. With Bower still running out front, Jirousek was working his way toward the front. Jirousek tried the outside line at the checkered but still settled for second place, while Bower was awarded the win. Jonathon Young and Tyler Henning battled for the fourth place spot to the end as well. It was great action.
Lake County Fair Continued... smoked because there were so many good guys. I’m glad I came out with Jeff and I want to thank Sportland 2 for loaning me that CRF450.” The ‘Sassinator’ Greg Sassi took the win in the 250 amateur class Wednesday and Erik Utech took the 450 win. Tuesday’s winner Catalani decided to only bring his 450 on night two and he blew it up in the qualifying heat race which knocked him out of the event for the night. Gibson’s 1-1-1-1 obviously made him the King of Lake County for 2011. Browning was second overall with a 5-7-2-2. Lake County continues to bring out big names and great racing. This continues to be a great show... not only in the Pro classes, but in the amateur classes as well. Each year sees more Amateur riders coming out for their share of the glory in front of the packed spectator stands, and 2012 should be even bigger yet.
The new Air Cooled Production Quad class brought three riders to the line. Yamaha rider, Duane Pretsch claimed the early lead. Wasting no time was Tyler Allen, creeping from behind and passing Pretsch on the outside to overtake the lead. Hunter Schultz was looking to pass second place Pretsch on the outside line but was unsuccessful. The 505cc class brought on a lot of heat this night. With everyone wanting the best possible finish, David Schultz claimed the holeshot. There was a three-way brawl for the third place involving Adam Buchman, Soren Lavalley, and Jesse Janisch. Second place Morgan Mischler was working his way on the outside line up the back tire of Schultz. Bushman joined in on the action with Mischler and Schultz. As the white flag was dropped, these top three riders were still three wide. At the finish line, Schultz and Mischler collided, with Mischler striking the fence. As the night was over, Mischler seemed to only have minor cuts, scrapes, and bruises, which we were all glad to hear. When all the races came to a close on this beautiful night, the Aztalan members had kept the track prepped and in great shape all afternoon long. Great job everyone. See you next time at the track!

Great weekend at Fun Valley Montezuma, Iowa - August 7 By Tracy Petrak File photos by Missi Thede
T
he crew at Fun Valley was on top of things Saturday evening as they groomed the track for another great day of racing on Sunday. They turned it up, watered profusely and groomed it to be spectacular. Mother Nature on the other hand, decided in one torrential downpour in the middle of the night to test this track along with the thrill seeking riders ready to show their stuff. After some much needed scooping of mud from the corners and volunteers riding their quads on the track to tame it, showtime was on. As the gate dropped for the six Quad A riders, mud was still an issue but only for the spectators standing near the fence as they got pelted from clods of dirt. #65 Trey Sudbrock made the decision early on to take the winning status that Tanner Gipple had earned on Saturday. All of the quads were running close in this moto and never failed to show what everyone came to see. As Sudbrock took the win he was followed up the final hill by Gipple and Sean Taylor. In the second moto the track conditions were actually a little dusty. Again this group

Taylor took second overall with Gipple third. Next from the gate came the 125 class. Lined up were seven determined riders that all wanted that win. Each took off with a mission and everyone stayed in the same position from the start. Chase Stevenson went to the front from the start and never lost it. He had Corey Jacobe in his fumes just waiting to take the lead with each lap. Jordan Harnish finished in third. Stevenson, Jacobe, Jacob Falck and Ryan Christie gave a great show in the second moto. It just seemed there was no easy way to pass and in the final lap, they stayed in the same position again. Corey Jacobe rode well to finish second in the 14-24B/C and 125 classes.
In the second moto Moore was plagued with problems and didn’t get to finish. Stevenson took his checkered flag without pressure. Not to be in the shadows, Conis took second overall with Dakota Anderson third overall. The weather was great with less of the humidity that tends to take a few people from the moto scene. Everyone gets tired of it this time of year, and when that first shot of coolness sets in we’re all ready to go again! espite the heat and dry conditions Jason Erdmann hit the track hard and by nightfall Friday everyone pulling into the pits was treated to a view of a perfectly prepped track for the day ahead. Saturday was the assigned day for Quads to join in and when the gate dropped for them Scott Kinczfogel got the jump and led everyone. Kinczfogel quickly put a gap on the field and cruised at his own pace to the checkers. Meanwhile a battle developed between Austin Clemens and Alex Fruit (both B riders). By the end of lap three Clemens pulled away. Kinczfogel quickly took the lead in the second moto again. Kurt Kvigne was running third and for a couple of laps, hanging behind Clemens. Kinczfogel talked about his day, “I felt excellent and the track was excellent. The weather and temperature were perfect and the bike was running awesome. I just stayed out there pushing and riding smart. That ski jump is a big jump, one of the biggest jumps I have ever hit. When you hit that wide open and look at the markers and see 130 and 150 feet and see where you are landing it’s a long way down there. I want to thank my sponsors Jansen Motorsports, Kal-Gard Oil, Elka Suspension, my family, Scott USA, ITP Tires, and EVS . Also thanks to the track owner for letting us come out and ride. Quads don’t have many tracks left where we can ride and we need to support the ones that let us out there.” The rest of Saturday saw great racing in all classes of bikes most of which stayed around for Sunday’s activities. Sunday morning was a drastic contrast to the blue skies all day Saturday and just as practice started the skies opened up with a torrential downpour of about an inch in 30 minutes. Erdmann quickly announced he was heading out and in an hour the track would be ready. Erdmann went beyond the track being ready as he produced a racing surface that was perfect. By the time racing started lines were formed and the soil was tacky everywhere. The 125Jr class headed out first and Eli Walters grabbed the holeshot just ahead of Jordan Schiller and Brandon Clifford. Clifford got by Schiller midway through lap one and by the time Walters went around the scoring point on lap two Clifford was right on his rear tire. Schiller meanwhile was dropping positions because of problems with his bike. AJ Meidl moved up into third but had to fight off Justin Wolf for the final two laps to hold onto his position. Meidl got the jump in moto two with
Mason Persha right by his back fender. Wolf was charging hard and by lap three had moved up from a mid-pack start into second with Walters pushing him. Wolf finally found an opening in Meidl’s defenses and slid past to take the lead on the white flag lap. A 1/3 day was good enough for Walters to hold onto the overall while Wolf (4/1) was second and Meidl (3/2) finished up the podium. Wolf on his second place overall, “In moto two I didn’t have a good start and basically started from last. I made a pass in the second valley and then on the next lap kind of dove inside on the big tunnel jump and that put me in second. I worked my way up and on the last lap caught AJ. I got past him in the rollers and took the moto win. The track is pretty good, getting a little

dry but it is holding up good. This was my first race back in eleven weeks so it feels good. Thanks to Sportland 2, my Mom and Dad, MSR, ProTaper, Diamond Racing Wheels, and Spy.” When the gate dropped on 250C Ashley Densow led the way onto the track and began putting some breathing room between her and the rest of the pack. Eliah Norman was running second with Daniel Kraemer close behind. Shane Cooper was cutting his way through the pack and by the middle of lap three he made his way past Kraemer. Cooper made his final move on the last lap as he slipped past Norman to take away second. Densow repeated her get away in moto two as she cruised to the finish. This time Kraemer was ahead of Norman with Carson Coats putting pressure on them from fourth position. Norman was charging and by the time he came out of Valley he had moved up into second. Kraemer spent the next three laps pushing a wheel in on Norman every chance he got until on the white flag lap he finally wedged his way through to take second just before the checkers flew. Mason Persha grabbed the holeshot in moto one of 85Sr with Jakob Passineau and Max Steinhorst close behind. Persha got stuck behind a downed rider in the second lap causing him to hold up. Passineau got the drive coming out of the corner and charged past. By the time lap three was over Persha was back out front and then held on for the win. Persha ran out front in moto two again as he took the overall with a 1/1 day followed by Passineau and Steinhorst. Persha, “Both motos went pretty good, I got both holeshots. In moto two I got the holeshot and was able to check out a bit and got the win. I also raced Supermini and got second. I had good starts but Walters was just faster. I’d like to thank my Grandpa, Mike’s Motorsports, my Mom and Dad, and Rob’s Performance.” In the +40 class Doug Forstner slipped between Daryl Willing and Tom Ferguson to steal away the holeshot, but midway through lap one Willing took away the lead. Willing began pulling away leaving Forstner battling with Wayne Slagle. Slagle was able to power

down the ski jump and get by Forstner as lap one was finishing. On lap three Ferguson was all over Forstner and as they came out of valley one Ferguson made the pass. Forstner didn’t give up and as they made the final drop at the ski jump he launched hard enough to retake third as the checkers flew. Willing grabbed the moto two holeshot and right away had pressure from Jeff Ramsay. Ramsay finished second with Slagle grabbing third. Hangtime weekend shortened Akron, Indiana - August 6 & 7 By Becky Stichter
W
ith all the pop-up thunderstorms, getting the second motos done without rain or lightening was the challenge at Hangtime this weekend. On Saturday evening, the first moto was dry for everyone, but rain began falling about halfway through the second set. Ryan Hoover, mounted on a KTM took charge in the 125cc 2-stroke class. Coming out of the gates in the lead both motos, and riding solid, Hoover finished 1-1. Austin Shelton and Chance Trigalet rode well, but weren't able to stop Hoover. Trigalet, also riding in the 85cc (12-15) class had a good battle with Nick Raseta. In the first moto, Raseta, mounted on a Kawasaki, worked his way into the lead position. Trigalet and Bailey Batchelor pressured from behind, but Raseta was able to hold them off and win the moto. In the second moto Raseta and Trigalet were battling again. Raseta fell coming out of a turn and took a while to get going again. This gave Trigalet some breathing room, and he took advantage of this to win the second moto, followed by David Stanker. Mini Quad riders Blake Sarver, Logan Stanfield and Jordanne Stichter rode hard tonight. Coming out of the gates they were running side by side before Sarver hit the gas

and started to pull ahead, finishing 1-1. Stanfield and Stichter continued to battle it out early in both motos before Stanfield had problems with his machine and fell back. KTM rider, Dalton Edmondson ran 1-1 in the 65cc (7-9) class ahead of Adam Davis. Clayton Servaty and Ashton Greene battled for third place, with Servaty finishing 4-3. In the 250cc class, Evan Denney, mounted on a KTM, controlled the pace of the race. Getting good starts and making his move early, Denney pulled into the lead. The rain in the second moto didn't seem to affect his riding and Denney finished 11. Battling for second were Austin Shelton and Josh Workman. Shelton pulled himself into second, finishing 2-2. Just as the races were finishing for the night, the rain started to lighten up. The weather looked very promising Sunday morning. Sunny, clear blue skies. The 250B riders started the action. In moto one, Spyke's KTM rider Dalton Packard took the holeshot. Less than a bikes length behind were Dakota Robins and Chad Jeralds. Coming out of the second corner bike to bike,
Robins and Jeralds were battling for first. Heading into the 110 jump, Robins hit the throttle and took off. Robins pulled ahead and got a little breathing room. In the second moto Robins wasn't at the gate, and Jeralds took the lead. Packard followed Jeralds, but wasn't able to get around him, and Jeralds took the overall win with his 2-1 moto finishes. In the 125cc 2-stroke class, Levi Johnson was back on the track after recovering from a broken arm. He rode solid in both motos finishing 1-1. Austin Shelton, Chance Trigalet and Nick Fleckner rode well, but Johnson was able to keep them back. Riders in the 65cc (7-9) class put on a good show. In the first moto, Dalton Edmondson took the holeshot and set the pace of the race. Brogan Strubberg and Davey Fitzpatrick battled it out for second place. Edmondson won this moto, followed by Strubberg. The rain in the second moto may have affected some of the riders. Edmondson for one struggled a little. Fitzpatrick pulled into the lead and finished first this time, running 3-1. Addison Wilmington took second followed by Brogan Strubberg. In the 250C class, Evan Denney was out of the gates first and pulled ahead of the other riders. Kevin Fulford and Corey Henson were next in line before traffic thinned out, and position changes began. Denney maintained his lead. Austin Shelton pulled up into second with Kyle Spicer in third. In the second moto the riders had rain. Denney didn't slow, and pulled ahead to finish 1-1. Fulford, having a better run this moto finishing second followed by Hunter Weaver. harder, and some wicked lightening bolts were close. The rest of the races were cancelled. It was too bad that the 85cc (9-11) class didn't get the chance to run their second moto. Evan Faucett, mounted on a Suzuki, and Justin Stichter had a good battle in the first moto. Faucett got out of the gates faster than Stichter and had the lead. Stichter got caught up in some traffic, but worked around it. Stichter closed the gap and was a bike length behind Faucett at times. Faucett kept on the throttle and was able to take the win. Stichter wanted another chance at Faucett, but didn't get it this time. The Open B riders only got one moto as well. Connor Cowles shot out of the gates, rode well, and took the win. Brock Aleshire and Dalton Packard were next in line. I would have liked to have seen these guys run a second moto, but it just didn't work out. The 50cc (7-8) class riders were out there racing with all they had. Kennan Leis took the lead and finished first. Brogan Strubberg had his Cobra humming and was hitting the jumps hard. He was a determined rider, but wasn't able to catch Leis. They gave it all they had and it was fun to watch these young riders. Brown County Fair Supercross New Ulm, Minnesota - August 12 By Dusty Rose

t’s Friday night… and time for some Supercross Racing in New Ulm at the Brown County Fair. The Motokazie crew from Jordan, MN built and groomed the track to perfection, and the anxious fans in the stands were ready for the gates to drop. With temps in the high 70’s and a blue sky above, the riders were ready to burn up the track. Tonight delivered action from twelve classes, ranging from 50cc to 450cc motorcycles, as well as quad classes. The 250B class had Sean Castle of Faribault, MN, Mike Will, and Joe Belgarde jumping out to take the top three positions. Castle took the holeshot and just checked out leaving the other riders in his roost. Will held onto second followed by Belgarde as LeSueur, MN rider Shane Page, just coming back from a broken femur, fought his way across the line for fourth. Mini Quad Sport saw Danielle Radunz and Nicole Christiansen fly out of the starting gates side by side and into the whoops. As they came

to the berm Christiansen spun out, leaving the door wide open for Radunz to take the lead followed by Calvin Jobe and Anthony Cluka. As the race continued the battle between second heated up. Cluka was riding a very hard and went high on the far end berm to take over second. Jobe lost some momentum and Christiansen worked back up to take home the third place trophy. In the Mini Quad Production race we had Danielle’s little brother Luke Radunz. It was his golden birthday and he really wanted to take home the first place trophy for the evening. Radunz pulled the holeshot and checked out, making the race is his own. Radunz was followed across the finish line by Nick Norby from Prior Lake, MN. The Mini Quad Stk race had Dylan O’Flanagan, Nick Norby, Riley Butcher, and Kyle Johnson bouncing through the whoops and catching a little air on the triple during the opening lap. Johnson and Butcher were still footpeg to footpeg going into the second lap before Johnson gained ground on Butcher and finally got the pass on the north end of the track to take over the third position. O’Flanagan and Norby came into the last lap battling for the win. Norby went high onto the berm hoping to gain some speed but O’Flanagan didn’t give up any ground, taking the win. Marcus Winch out of Mankato, MN took the holeshot in the 450B class followed by Kyle Schmiesing. Shane Page and Sean Castle were vying for third and that was where all the action took place. Castle moved up to third on the second lap through the whoops and then took over second on lap six. In the end of another exciting race, Winch blew everyone away and took the checkered flag followed by Castle and Schmiesing. Tibbetts was able to get around Meyer after a long battle and clinch second place in moto one, but only by inches. In moto two, Meyer came back strong and pulled ahead of Tibbetts out of the gates. Meyer was able to hold his second place spot throughout the race and finished second place overall with Tibbetts third. others look to work their way around the carnage, it is Hayes working his way into the lead with Kody Smith now in second. At the finish that is how they ended up, with Hayes taking the win on his Kawasaki and Smith 2nd on his Honda. Coming home in 3rd was Tyler Kincaid on his Yamaha. Pulling the holeshot in 85Sr was RCR Kawasaki backed Jordan Mackiewicz followed by Yamaha mounted Jimmy Epifanio. Brian Krohn on his KTM worked his way into second and was mounting a charge on Mackiewicz by the second lap. As the white flag came out the top two now had lappers to deal with, and that gave Krohn his final shot at catching Mackiewicz. As they entered the back straight away and worked their way through the “double, double, step-up” and into the left hand bowl turn it was Krohn now
n the movie “Field of Dreams” they say “if you build it they will come”. Well, in Stadium Motocross, if you build it in Mendota IL, they will come. Racers came from as far away as 465 miles to claim their stake in the great prize money and plaques at the 6th round of the Megacross Shootout Series. However, at the end of the night, it was the local Illinois racers that took home the gold. Pearl City, IL racer Tommy Hofmaster wasn’t about to be intimidated by the showing of current Arenacross champion Jeff Gibson or Arenacross and AMA outdoor motocross weekly competitor Willy Browning. The soon to be 32 year old racer showed them the fast way around the Megacross circuit by winning all four classes he entered. Hofmaster on his Rock River Powersports Yamahas took home wins in 250A, Open A, +25 and +30A. Any time you enter and win four classes in one night, that is impressive, but to do it against the competition that comes to Megacross is nothing short of amazing. Other racers with multiple wins were Kevin Huddleston in 50Jr and 50 4-8, Tommy Fortune in 50Sr and 65 Beginner and Jesse Keith in +25B and +30B/C. The biggest and one of the most exciting races of the night was the Open C class. With 24 racers lined up on the gate, Yamaha mounted Andrew Magiera took full advantage off the start. As they completed lap one it was Magiera followed by Lucas Hayes and Patrick Doughty. Hayes was all over Magiera for the lead on lap two. As they entered lap three you could throw a blanket over the top three with Doughty now having moved into second. the line in second was Kawasaki mounted Dave Hayes and rounding out the podium was Honda mounted Larry Bank. Open B saw a newcomer to the class as 250cc Yamaha mounted Tony Spizzirri on his Sunrise Powersports ride moved up to the Open class. Tony, who was possibly competing in his last Megacross event of the year due to his departure to college went into the race with the mentality of “if you can’t run with the big dogs, stay on the porch”. This motivation of wanting to finish the season on a high note led to his first win of the season. The race started off with a holeshot for Honda mounted Jesse Keith, but once the racers entered the backside whoops, it was Spizzirri blitzing through them and into the lead. At the finish it was Spizzirri followed by Kawasaki mounted Ricki Williams and Honda mounted Adam Petnuch. The battle for 2nd was tight as Williams and Petnuch traded paint at the line, but Williams held on. In 250B it was Jake Cook and Jody Walker side by side down the start straight followed closely into the first corner by another Honda racer Connor Robinson. Robinson was able to dive to the inside and come away with the holeshot. As the pack made its way towards the back straight it was Walker followed by Robinson with Nate McLeese all over Robinson. This battle of the top three continued for most of the race. As they were midway through lap three McLeese made his way past Robinson. As the white flag came out it was Walker followed by McLeese and Robinson. As the racers work their way around the final few turns and over the last table top they are still neck and neck. As they approach the last corner Walker and McLeese bang bars, but Walker hangs on for the win. In the 125 class Nate McLeese got his redemption for the runner up spot in 250B. Nate pulled the holeshot and was followed closely by Tony Spizzirri. As they completed lap one it was Spizzirri now in the lead followed by McLeese, Robbie Hyson on a 2012 KTM and Dirk Roper. On lap three the order changed as Spizzirri had to navigate around a downed racer and that was all that McLeese needed to take the lead. As the white flag came out, Hyson was all over Spizzirri, with McLeese holding on to the lead. At the checkers, it was McLeese taking the win, followed by Hyson and Spizzirri in third. megacross continued on page 53

upercross in Wisconsin is alive and well in the summertime. Columbia County Fairgrounds again hosted the CMJ raceway crew for the annual supercross in front of the grandstand crowds at the local fair. This year the I-94 Supercross Series has four race dates with two nights at Portage. The series runs a typical supercross format with afternoon practice followed by heat races and last chance qualifiers to determine who is in the main events. The racers were treated to nice weather this year and a little different track. It is still laid out in the fairgrounds arena, and track builder/racer Marty Leum did a heck of a job this year building a pretty cool track. Right out the gate, the riders hit a left hander in a small plateau and then depending on skill a double or triple before hitting the big

spectator jump which saw riders leap as far as 100’. The 65cc class kicked the main events off and Dylan Sorum on his Kawasaki jumped out to an early lead. Sorum led the opening lap with Aiden McCormick, Zach Schiller and Sam Forstner in tow. On lap two, Forstner was moved up and was hounding Sorum for the lead. It was coming down to who made the least amount of mistakes. On lap three, Forstner made his way past Sorum for the lead and Schiller came by too. At the checkers it was Donahue Super Sports’ Forstner with his first main event win in the 65cc class. On the ride home, he asked if we could race all the time under the lights. Oh boy! Schiller finished a strong second with McCormick third and Sorum held fourth. Trevor Slaght rounded out the top five. 50Sr had a pretty full gate and the crowd gets excited to see the future of our sport screaming

their 50cc bikes around the track. Justin Oehlhof pulled the holeshot to lead the main event. Pretty sure he was planning on winning but Eugene Wolff had other plans. The two battled for the lead and finally Wolff got around and into the lead with Dylan Knoch in third. Aiden McCormick, Jackson Oehlhof and Nick Coplien were fighting hard for 5th. Lap after lap all were pushing each as fast as those 50cc bikes would go. Luke Van Lyssel held onto fourth and Aiden McCormick won the battle for 5th. Intermission had the crowd on its feet with a cool halftime show. Wisconsin’s now famous Smage Brothers pulled their “America’s Got Talent” show out onto the track to wow the crowd with their awesome trials skill and show. When I talked to Pat and Phil Smage prior to the show they said they were glad to even make it in time as the previous night they were in California for the primetime TV show, and caught the red eye to get back. As I watched the show, I realized that if any up and coming riders want to get better, they
should keep an eye on these two riders as they portray excellence on a motorcycle. To be able to ride a wheelie up a ramp and then jump a 10 foot gap and land on a roof of a vehicle, stop, and turn 180 degrees and then wheelie down another ramp is just sheer talent. But you still wouldn’t get me to lie down in front of them on the track as the bunny hop over people and miss on purpose by less than an inch. The racing action got back under way with the 250C class. This was the biggest class of the night, but only ten riders made the main event. Brian Terry from Cottage Grove was able to grab the holeshot ahead of Ed Anderson, Troy Neault and Dylan Thill. Two laps in Neault made the pass for the lead by out jumping Terry over the spectator jump. Because of the smaller track and tight confines, the racing action was incredible and I would guess to venture the difference between third through tenth was only about a four second gap. In the end Neault came away with the win over Terry. Jacob Schiller rounded out the
top three. Anderson fell back to fourth just ahead of Brady Sturm. Everyone was anticipating the final race of the evening with Open A on the line. I asked Marty Leum before the race if he thought he had an advantage building the track and he just shook his head no and said did you see who’s here tonight. This year there was a strong A rider turnout and some pretty fast competition. A man familiar with this type of racing, Arenacross legend Tommy Hofmaster was first into turn one with Zach Coons, Nick Jackson, Greg Hochmuth and Vaughn Mays in tow. Three laps in, Coons started to close the gap that Hofmaster had built and the crowd was sensing the battle was on. The rest of the pack was racing so hard I think they were all pushing towards the lead but pretty sure the crafty veteran of Hofmaster was cool as a cucumber out front. On lap five, Coons made his move and got around Hofmaster, but as quickly as he made the pass, the very next corner he came in hot and stalled his bike on the inside line. Hofmaster regained the lead and Jackson was now hounding the Yamaha rider for the lead. As the main event wound down, Hofmaster reeled off smooth consistent laps coming from his years of Arenacross experience to take the win about a one second gap over Jackson. Hochmuth rounded out the podium.

As they make their way down the back straight and across the start straight into the next left hander, it was Gibson still in the lead. As Gibson came into the turn he stalled his Honda. As they finish lap one it is Hofmaster in the lead, followed by Zont and fresh to the A class Corey Catalani. Gibson was all the way back to 12th. Willy Browning, after a poor start was working his way through the pack. As the race progressed it was Hofmaster way out front with a nice battle for third shaping up between Catalani on his Yamaha and Maxx Malatia on his ‘12 KX 450. t Joliet MX, one of the most anticipated events of the year is the Jordan Cram Memorial Race. And it’s no wonder because it really winds up morphing into a big family driven Mini Invitational with a fun and exciting X Games type atmosphere. Everyone there comes to celebrate the life of Jordan Cram, an awesome young racer that we all miss very much, his family that continues to inspire and motivate people all over the country and inevitably our own friends, family and each other. Justin Martino, his team at Joliet MX and the series sponsors all came together to build and dedicate the beautiful podium platform in remembrance of Jordan. The Chris Brent built podium is a central point at the park. Everyone gathered together around the podium. The dramatic memorial presentation was inspiring, tearful and filled with a myriad of emotions. People held their kids and spouses close as we all honored, acknowledged and identified with what Dion, Jenny and their family had come through with the loss of their precious one of a kind son. It was a good and humbling experience for all. The special JCM ceremonies are always wrapped up with a heart felt memorial parade lap in honor of Jordan and his family. Every racer in the park does a parade lap around the track in Jordan’s honor and then symbolically stops and touches the throttle on Jordan’s bike. At intermission everyone was treated to a FMX jump show by Jon “Airtime” Williams. Jon did a great show and even threw some new tricks. The young racer/FMXer wowed the crowd. The 125 2-Stroke class kicked off the

mains as Joe Ahern got the holeshot. Ahern had his work cut out because Conner Robinson and Brian Krohn battled Ahern to a very close one, two, three finish in the heat race. Robinson got a bad start in the main and had to slice though the pack. In dramatic fashion, making passes on every lap, Robinson caught all the way up to third. Ahern and Krohn battled hard the whole race all the way up to the very last corner. Krohn went for the pass in the last turn, but riding very smart, Ahern stuck it inside, cornered perfectly and blasted across the finish line holding on for the win. Greg Pollack battled with his good friends, Brian Carey and Pete Witkowski in the 30B class. All three have been training, riding and working very hard to compete well for the championship this year. They went one, two, three in the heat. In the main, Witkowski got the holeshot and was leading into the last lap, with Carey and Pollack battling behind him. Witkowski had a part break on his bike and stalled. He pushed his bike over the finish to complete his gallant effort in the race. He said, “pushing my bike across the line was what I needed to do with all the family and friends that came out to watch me ride. It was Pollack that came out on top, winning the competitive class. Carey took second with Audrius Ceproixas in third and Witkowski pushing it across for fourth. In the 250B main, Aj Miksys got the jump out of the gate, but went down in the first turn, giving up the lead to Sam Shamie aboard his Yamaha. Shamie held on to first until the checkered. An always competitive Miksys got up after his first turn stumble and chased all the way up to second, making a dramatic pass on hard charging Brandon Domark in the very last corner before the finish! Steve Brookhouse, even though riding injured won the Open C class. Brookhouse was formerly a competitive quad racer, but decided to switch to 2 wheels in 2010. Brookhouse, “it was a great race to be a part of, with the dedication and honor given to Jordan’s family and it was my first Dist 17 win of the year. I was glad to be there for sure.” The Mini’s always come out in droves for the Memorial race and the racing was epic for sure. KTM rider Brian Krohn who lives in Mokena raced three
classes. It was Krohn winning both the Super Mini and 85Sr classes, and finishing 2nd in an awesome battle in the 125 2 stroke class. Joliet MX offers beginner classes for 65cc and 85cc size bikes for up and coming riders in District 17. It’s a great way for the riders that are starting out to get used to a race environment with less bikes and with riders that are closer to their skill level. In the 65 Beg. class Richard Bowman took the win in the heat race, but it was Christopher Gallaher who got the win in the main. Bowman rode to a strong second in the main ahead of Joe Stimac. Brett Goffey took the win in 85 Beginner, Ryan York was second and Eric York rounded off the podium. Kyle Kunstman won the 250C class. This race was a stacked full gate and had a number of great battles through out the whole race. JMX welcomed back a few riders from injury, including long time rider Vaughn Hass. It was Devon Simonson taking the win in both the 65Jr heat and main races. In the main it was Christian Swieton in 2nd and Joey Gura 3rd. Tyler Evensen, who was coached and no doubt inspired by his series Champion dad, Jeff, took both the heat and main wins in the 65Sr class. 85 Open is a track class that many of the mini riders utilize to get some extra seat time and to scout out lines for their mains. The 85 Open class was won by Bret Dannis and it
was Shawn Thompson in 2nd and Jack Stimac 3rd. Ricki Williams who always puts his work in with a lot of seat time fought hard to win Open B against the young talented 250B class winner Sam Shamie. Shamie rode strong and aggressive but could only manage a second place finish against the very consistent Williams. Honda rider David Vaksdal rounded off the podium in 3rd and it was Brandon Domark just off the box in forth. The Cherry Boys racing team always shows up ready for battle in the Vet classes at any Stadium race they enter. Jim and Paul Cherry are very accomplished racers and are almost always accompanied by their dad who is a long time Flat track Veteran. These two, who are brothers that race very seriously against each other and all their competitors, were a real handful for Rev, the eventual winner of the night. While it was Rev taking the win in the 30A main, the Cherry boys were pushing hard the whole time. One of the top battles of the night that treated the fans to a finish so close you could’ve thrown a blanket and covered all three of them in the air over the finish line jump. After the last race was run there was a concert from a local band, and it was a sweet closing to a fun and exciting day. It was a touching and inspiring day for everyone who attended the Jordan Cram Memorial race.

FCA MX Camp Taylorville, Illinois - July 4-8 By James Pinckard
T
he Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is the largest Christian sports organization in America. One special aspect of FCA MX camp is the national pro riders who give on-site support and instruction to campers. Riders have included industry greats like Nathan Ramsey, James Povolny, Mike LaRocco, Andrew Short, Justin Buckelew, Kevin Windham, Sara Whitmore and more. This is an impressive lineup and testament of faith in the MX industry. I know at some of the Pro races Steve Hudson has asked the top riders to give back their time and be grateful for what they have. I know the message has hit home and the future looks to have many more top riders for sure. The Illinois camp at Southfork Dirt Riders in Taylorville, IL were thrilled to see Pastor Steve Hudson and the Red Bull factory KTM rider Andrew Short. Unlike some motocross schools where one star athlete instructs multiple riders in a group, FCA MX camps feature multiple instructors like Suzuki rider Alex Wentzel, KTM rider Paden Feagans, Kawasaki Rider Dennis Dooley and long time
camper James Gresham. This week-long residential experience provides a unique focus on the relationship between the pro racer and campers. At Southfork, campers were broken out in to groups based on ability and bike size. The approach gave each camper plenty of one-on-one time with instructors in addition to track time, which was split into sections where each group worked a specific area before rotating in to another. Each day of camp was packed full of events, which started at 6:30 am and ended with lights out at 10 pm. Campers rode until 3 pm before taking time out for bike maintenance and a trip to the swimming hole. Evenings were action packed with bands, awards, games, and church services. Evening featured a Camp Idol contest that campers and pros practiced all week. Andrew Short spent an afternoon talking to campers about his life, faith, and racing. He answered all the questions the campers could come up with and signed autographs. Many afternoons were spent swimming along with a belly flop con-
test at the swimming hole. Pastor Steve Hudson brought it all full circle on the last night when he delivered the same Christian message he shares with the world’s best Supercross and Pro National riders. He talked about the challenge of being a Christian in today’s world and in the MX industry. Steve’s words resonated among the crowd and almost 20 people came forward to be baptized at the swimming hole, with faith filled circle of friends and fellow motocross families. This was definitely an inspiring motocross experience and it’s one to be remembered for a long time to come. CYCLE USA, September 2011

Gerlich hot at Hurricane Hills Mazeppa, Minnesota - July 24 By Mike Nelson
W
ith an overcast sky in the middle of one of the nastiest heat waves to pass through the area, Jake Gerlich managed to pull down a hat trick at Hurricane Hills over the weekend, winning five of his six motos in three A classes of competition. Riley Kroone made sure he earned every one of his wins. Gerlich took both motos in Open A with Kroone right behind him all the way, but Kroone got the jump on Gerlich in the 14-24A first moto, and despite Gerlich making a strong run on the last lap, Kroone managed to hold on for the morning win. When they hit the track for their second moto, Kroone had trouble on his first lap and Gerlich got out to a big lead with Kroone back in traffic from the B class that dropped with them. Kroone worked through the traffic and had Gerlich in sight, but ran out of laps and ended up second on the day in the class. In the 250A motos, Kroone was quicker out of the gates in the morning moto and held the lead through the first lap. By the second lap Gerlich was on him though and looking for a place to pass. When they came out of the valley on the back of the track Gerlich was out in front and pulled out to a comfortable lead for the win. In the final race of the day, Gerlich got out in front early and rode to his easier win, sealing the deal on his three class overalls. Kroone’s younger brother Bailey fared a little better splitting wins with Preston Gray in the 85cc 9-12 class. Gray took the holeshot in the morning moto and rode it all the way to the win, but in the afternoon moto, Austin

Griffin took the early lead with Kroone and Gray following. Griffin held on to the lead for over half the race, but when they came around to take the white flag, Kroone had made the pass on Griffin and held on to get the win and take the overall. In the 85cc 9-11 class Kroone took the holeshot in the morning with Griffin and Gray hot on his tail. As the race progressed, Kroone was able to hang on with Griffin and Gray holding close, but unable to make any passes. With the clouds clearing off for their second moto, it was Griffin taking the early lead with Kole Lemke, Gray and Kroone following as the riders passed the flagstand on their first lap. By the third lap, Griffin and Lemke were still nearly wheel to wheel. Kroone and Gray were still locked in a tight battle for third when Gray went down just two turns before the white flag. When they hit the checkers, Griffin was able to hold on for the win taking the class for the day with Lemke right behind. Kroone finished third, which combined with
Bailey Kroone on his way to a win in the 85cc 9-12 class.
his first moto win was good enough to take second in the class. There were a few riders that managed to pull down double class wins on the day. Youngster Kaleb Carmen swept all four of his motos in the 65cc classes to score his double, while Vet rider Matt Ludescher matched that performance in the +30 and +40B classes. In the C classes it was Nick Osowski earning a double taking nothing but wins in +25 and +30C. A young lady from Lake City, MN, Sidney Ziebell was out making her motocross debut this weekend. Ziebell faced some tough competition breaking into the race scene in the 65cc 9-11, 85cc 9-11 and Girls 9-13 classes, and she had a great time and got a good start to learning her way around a track in the heat of competition. Thanks go out to the staff at Hurricane Hills for all their hard work in the heat to put on another great day of racing action. Results 50cc Inj: 1.Trevin Nelson 50cc Multi: 1.Trevin Nelson

he weather was hot and so was the competition as the Indianhead Motorcycle Club hosted their annual Hill Drags in Red Wing, Minnesota. The drags this year included ATVs along with four classes of bikes ranging from 250cc to Open competing in a double elimination bracket racing format for each class. The top two from each class then advance to a single elimination bracket for the Top Eliminator and a thousand dollar top prize. The club has invested a lot of time and money reworking their hill since the spring climb. A small mountain of earth was hauled up and added to the top section of the hill building it out enough to consume the top breaker and make the top section of the hill steeper than I’ve ever seen it. Luke Parmeter and Steve Cain both advanced through the early rounds of the 250cc class without a loss, while Carson Curtis and Eric Wheelwright advanced through the loser’s side of the bracket. Parmeter edged out Cain to advance to the finals dropping Cain into the final slot of the loser’s bracket. Curtis was able to beat both Wheelwright and Cain to move into the finals against Parmeter, but Luke was on a roll and took the 250cc class win without a single loss. Jared Gitter worked the double elimination to his advantage to make it to the finals in all three of the remaining bike classes. Gitter managed to find a gremlin in the right lane off the final breaker that crossed him up and dumped him on his first round of the Open class against Jay Sallstrom in a race that was anyones call up until that point. Then it bit him again in the same spot on his second round of the 450cc class. In the 600cc class he planted himself into the same spot one final time in the third round giving up a win to Logan Peterson. After all that Gitter ran perfect to put all three of his machines into their final rounds on the double elimination brackets. He was forced to the right lane each time he came up in the finals and ended up three times a bridesmaid. Gitter’s first loss in the finals came in the 450cc class against current champion Aaron Prebe in a race that was too close to call with the Parmeter takes an early round naked eye.
